Abstract: Aim We evaluated the effects of native vegetation and agricultural activities on functional characteristics of aquatic insects’ assemblages in Atlantic Forest streams southern Brazil. Methods We collected information on land uses, riparian zone structural characteristics, and limnological variables of ten streams to characterize their environmental quality. In the same streams, we collected aquatic insects (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera) and determined their functional characteristics (e.g. food habits, mobility, shape, and body size). The information for each trait category was quantified using a fuzzy code technique. To test the environmental conditions on aquatic insect functional attributes, we used an RLQ analysis. Results In our study, only five environmental variables showed variation in streams (temperature, pH, DO, native vegetation, and agriculture use). We collected a total of 2591 organisms distributed in 21 EPT genera. We observed that the functional attributes of EPT formed distinct groups in relation to the stream categories defined by the measured environmental variables. We observed that shredders and larger and flattened organisms were associated with natural streams. These attributes were associated with the genera Phylloicus, Anacroneuria, Tupiperla, and Farrodes. On the other hand, we observed greater proportions of scrapers, with spherical bodies and shelter builders in streams impacted by agriculture. The most frequent genera in these streams were Itaura, Wormaldia and Helicopsyche. Conclusions The modification of natural landscapes by agricultural areas caused significant functional changes in the aquatic invertebrate communities. Since aquatic insects participate effectively in ecological processes, alterations in the functional characteristics of these communities can cause changes in the streams’ functioning.

Resumo: Objetivo Neste estudo avaliamos os efeitos da vegetação nativa e atividades agrícolas sobre as características funcionais de assembleias de insetos aquáticos em riachos de Mata Atlântica, sul do Brasil. Métodos Coletamos informações sobre usos do solo, características estruturais da zona ripária e variáveis limnológicas de dez córregos para caracterizar sua qualidade ambiental. Nos mesmos riachos coletamos insetos aquáticos (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera e Trichoptera) e determinamos as características funcionais (e.g., hábitos alimentares, mobilidade, forma, tamanho do corpo). A informação para cada categoria de característica foi quantificada usando uma técnica de código fuzzy. Para testar as condições ambientais nos atributos funcionais de insetos aquáticos, utilizamos uma análise RLQ. Resultados Em nosso estudo, apenas cinco variáveis ambientais apresentaram variação entre os riachos (temperatura, pH, DO, vegetação nativa, uso agrícola). Coletamos um total de 2591 organismos distribuídos em 21 gêneros das ordens EPT. Observamos que os atributos funcionais do EPT formaram grupos distintos em relação às categorias de riachos definidas pelas medidas das variáveis ambientais. Observamos que fragmentadores e organismos maiores e achatados estiveram associados a riachos naturais. Esses atributos foram associados aos gêneros Phylloicus, Anacroneuria, Tupiperla e Farrodes. Por outro lado, em riachos impactados pela agricultura, observamos maiores proporções de raspadores, com corpos esféricos e construtores de abrigos. Nesses riachos, os gêneros mais frequentes foram Itaura, Wormaldia e Helicopsyche. Conclusões A modificação das paisagens naturais por áreas agrícolas causou mudanças funcionais significativas nas comunidades de invertebrados aquáticos. Como os insetos aquáticos participam efetivamente dos processos ecológicos, alterações nas características funcionais dessas comunidades podem causar mudanças no funcionamento dos riachos.

Resumo: Objetivo este trabalho teve por objetivo analisar a efetividade de Áreas Protegidas (AP) como mantenedoras da fauna de macroinvertebrados bentônicos e a utilização destes na gestão das águas dessas áreas. Testamos a hipótese de em riachos localizados dentro das AP haverá maior abundância e diversidade de organismos. Métodos Coletamos macroinvertebrados em riachos localizados dentro e fora de duas UC no Sul do Brasil: (Parque Estadual Fritz Plaumann, Santa Catarina; Parque Natural Municipal Teixeira Soares, Rio Grande do Sul). Em cada riacho foram mensurados variáveis físicas e químicas da água. Foram coletadas três sub-amostras de macroinvertebrados em substrato pedregoso com um amostrador Surber e calculados abundância de organismos, riqueza rarefeita, diversidade de Shannon e Equitabilidade. Resultados Os riachos localizados no interior das AP apresentaram águas bem oxigenadas e pH ligeiramente básico. A condutividade elétrica foi maior nos trechos externos as AP. Observamos que riqueza rarefeita, diversidade de Shannon e equitabilidade foram maiores nos riachos localizados no interior das AP. A PerMANOVA nos indica que a composição foi diferente entre trechos dos rios (p = 0,03) e PA (p = 0,01). Conclusões O uso dos organismos como bioindicadores demostrou potencial de resposta em relação a integridade ambiental dos riachos. Assim, estes organismos têm potencial para utilização pelos gestores de AP para monitoramento e tomada de decisões sobre a manutenção das áreas protegidas.

Abstract: Aim This work aimed to analyze the effectiveness of protected areas (PA) as maintainers of the fauna of benthic macroinvertebrates and the use of these in the water management of these areas. We tested the hypothesis that in streams located within the PA there will be greater abundance and diversity of organisms. Methods We collected macroinvertebrates in streams located inside and outside two PA in Southern Brazil: (Fritz Plaumann State Park, Santa Catarina, Teixeira Soares Municipal Natural Park, Rio Grande do Sul). In each stream we measured physical and chemical variables of the water. Three sub-samples of macroinvertebrates were collected on stony substrate with a Surber sampler and calculated abundance of organisms, rarefied richness, Shannon diversity and Evenness. Results The streams located in the interior of the PA presented well oxygenated waters and slightly basic pH. The electrical conductivity was higher in the external sections than the UC. We observed that rarefied richness, Shannon diversity and equitability were higher in the streams located inside the PA. PerMANOVA indicates that the composition was different between streams sections (p = 0.03) and PA (p = 0.01). Conclusions The use of organisms as bioindicators showed a potential response to the environmental integrity of streams. Thus, these organisms have potential for use by PA managers for monitoring and decision making on the maintenance of protected areas.

Abstract The dynamics of land use and cover at different spatial and temporal scales allows us to evaluate changes in landscapes, socioeconomic system and impacts on the natural environment. Land use and land cover changes and socioeconomic activities of the Northern Region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil were analyzed over a 20-year scale. Using images from the Landsat 5 sensor TM, land use and land cover maps were obtained for 1991, 2001 and 2011, in which agricultural uses, native vegetation and pasture presented a significant difference between the years. We identified two scenarios for the region: the northern portion presents a reduction in agricultural areas and an increase in pasture and native vegetation, while the southern portion presents a constancy of agricultural areas. The predominant agricultural uses and socioeconomic factors determined the major changes in landscape structure. The effects of these changes resulted in a reduction in the area of agricultural uses and expansion of native vegetation and pasture areas.

A abundância e distribuição espacial das espécies podem ser reflexos das necessidades do seu nicho ecológico, além de reflexos das variações ambientais no tempo e espaço. Os objetivos do presente trabalho foram analisar a distribuição espacial e grupos ecológicos das espécies arbóreas em um remanescente de floresta subtropical e avaliar a interferência destes padrões sobre métricas de riqueza e diversidade. Os padrões espaciais foram avaliados considerando uma área amostral de 1 ha dividida em unidades amostrais contíguas de 10 x 10 m, onde todos os indivíduos com perímetro à altura do peito > 15 cm foram amostrados. A descrição dos padrões foi obtida por meio de correlogramas (índice I de Moran), considerando diversas classes de distância, índices de agregação e diagramas de superfície. A co-ocorrência entre espécies foi analisada por meio de índices de associação espacial. A maioria das espécies apresentou distribuição agrupada e com autocorrelação espacial positiva, sobretudo para as menores classes de distância, indicando a formação de pequenos grupos de indivíduos. Da mesma forma, 17 espécies apresentaram associações espaciais (co-ocorrências), formando densos agrupamentos e, embora não tenham interferido sobre a riqueza específica, Casearia sylvestris e Ocotea diospyrifolia diminuíram a equabilidade em alguns setores da área. Espécies tolerantes à sombra apresentaram-se associadas, bem como, espécies dependentes de luz, indicando que a dinâmica de mosaicos pode interferir diretamente sobre a distribuição das espécies, sobretudo pela limitação de dispersão.

The abundance and spatial distribution of species may reflect on niche requirements, interactions among individuals and across as time and space. In this way, the aims of this work were to analyze tree species distribution and ecological groups in a remnant of subtropical forest to evaluate the interference of such patterns over richness and diversity metrics. We evaluated the spatial patterns of a 1 ha area divided into 10 x 10 m sampling units where we surveyed all living trees with perimeter at breast height > 15 cm. Pattern descriptions were obtained by using correlograms (Moran's I) over several distance classes, aggregation indices and surface diagrams. The co-occurrence among species was obtained by using spatial association indices. Furthermore, 17 species showed aggregated distribution and positive spatial autocorrelation, mainly in the shorter distance classes, which indicated the occurrence of several small groups of individuals. In addition, many species were spatially associated with dense groups and although such groups do not influence species richness, Casearia sylvestris and Ocotea diospyrifolia led to lower equability in some stands. Shade tolerant species were associated well as light demanding ones, which indicates that patch dynamics may interfere directly on species distribution, mainly by dispersal limitation.
