Abstract Short fibers are used in thermoplastic composites to increase their tensile and flexural resistance; however, it often decreases impact resistance. Composites with short vegetal fibers are not an exception to this behavior. The purpose of this work is to produce a vegetal fiber reinforced composite with improved tensile and impact resistance in relation to the polymer matrix. We used poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate), EVA, to recover the impact resistance of high density polyethylene, HDPE, reinforced with Curauá fibers, CF. Blends and composites were processed in a corotating twin screw extruder. The pure polymers, blends and composites were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, tensile mechanical properties and Izod impact resistance. EVA used as impact modifier in the HDPE matrix exhibited a co-continuous phase and in the composites the fibers were homogeneously dispersed. The best combination of mechanical properties, tensile, flexural and impact, were obtained for the formulations of composites with 20 wt. % of CF and 20 to 40 wt. % of EVA. The composite prepared with 20 wt. % EVA and containing 30 wt. % of CF showed impact resistance comparable to pure HDPE and improved tensile and flexural mechanical properties.

O interesse por polímeros biodegradáveis tem aumentado devido ao baixo impacto ambiental dos mesmos. No entanto, muitos desses produtos disponíveis no mercado são frágeis, difíceis de processar e têm alto custo. Uma das técnicas para superar essas deficiências é através de blenda com outros polímeros. Este trabalho avaliou várias composições de blenda PHB/PP, utilizando-se um aditivo pró-degradante deste último, de forma a tornar a formulação oxibiodegradável em solo simulado (ASTM D6003). O comportamento mecânico, térmico e químico de corpos de prova de tração das amostras enterradas foi acompanhado através de medidas de resistência à tração, DSC, FTIR, GPC e SEM. Parte das amostras foi envelhecida em estufa a 90 ºC por 10 dias, de forma a acelerar a oxidação do PP pelo aditivo. A blenda composta por 56 wt% de PP / 40 wt% de PHB / 3 wt% de GMA / 1 wt% de MnSt foi a mais susceptível à oxibiodegradação, tendo reduzido depois de 180 dias de enterramento em solo, a tensão de tração em 40%, alongamento na ruptura em 46% e a massa em 24%. Estes valores foram superiores ao próprio PHB puro e o efeito sinérgico ocorrido nestas blendas foi atribuído à aceleração da degradação do PHB pelo PP oxidado.

The interest in biodegradable polymers has increased because of their environmental advantages. Blending them with other polymers is one of the techniques currently employed to overcome their brittleness, poor processing and cost. This work evaluated different blend compositions of PHB/PP, using a pro-degrading additive for this latter, to make the formulation prone to oxo-biodegradability in simulated soil (ASTM D6003). The mechanical, thermal and chemical behavior of buried injection molded tensile bars was monitored through measurements of tensile strength, DSC, FTIR, GPC and SEM. Part of the samples was oven aged at 90 ºC for 10 days in order to accelerate the PP oxidation by the additive. The blend made of 56 wt% of PP / 40 wt% of PHB / 3 wt% of GMA / 1 wt% of MnSt was the most susceptible to oxo-biodegradation, having reduced after 180 days of burring in soil, its tensile stress by 40%, tensile elongation by 46% and mass by 24%. These values were even higher than the ones for the pure PHB. This synergic effect was attributed to the acceleration of PHB degradation by the oxidized PP.

Neste trabalho foram desenvolvidos biocompósitos baseados em acetato de celulose e fibras curtas de Curauá tratadas com dióxido de carbono supercrítico. O tratamento das fibras resultou na extração parcial de lignina, sendo este um método interessante pois não resulta em rejeitos químicos. Duas séries de biocompósitos, uma delas plastificada com ftalato de dioctila (DOP) e outra com citrato de trietila (TEC), foram preparadas por extrusão. Para ambas ocorreu a fibrilação e distribuição uniforme das fibrilas. Como conseqüência, os biocompósitos apresentaram maior capacidade calorífica, menor condutividade térmica e maior coeficiente de expansão térmica em comparação ao acetato de celulose plastificado. O tratamento das fibras com CO2 supercrítico intensificou as variações destas propriedades. Dentre os plastificantes, o DOP mostrou-se ligeiramente mais eficiente, resultando em materiais com menores valores de Tg e de módulo de Young. A adição das fibras teve um impacto relativamente baixo sobre o módulo (10%), porém houve uma perda significativa da resistência ao impacto. O conjunto de resultados permite concluir que estes biocompósitos apresentam potencial de aplicação como isolantes térmicos, sendo que os plastificados com TEC apresentam como vantagem o fato de todos seus componentes serem biodegradáveis.

In this work, the effect of pre-processing of short Curaua fibers with supercritical carbon dioxide on the properties of biocomposites with cellulose acetate was studied. The treatment with supercritical CO2 may result in the partial lignin extraction from the fibers. Two series of biocomposites, one plasticized with dioctyl phtalate (DOP) and another with triethyl citrate (TEC), were prepared by extrusion. Fibrilation and uniform distribution of fibers in the cellulose acetate matrix were observed for both biocomposites. As a consequence, the composites showed a higher specific heat, lower thermal conductivity and higher coefficient of thermal expansion than plasticized cellulose acetate. The treatment of the fibers increased such differences. Among the plasticizers, DOP was more efficient, decreasing Tg and Young's modulus of plasticized cellulose acetate. The fiber addition had a relatively low impact on the modulus (10%), however caused a decrease in the impact resistance. Taken together, the results show that these biocomposites are promising as thermal insulators, with the additional advantage of biodegradability of all components in the case of biocomposites plasticized with TEC.

Neste trabalho um eletrólito polimérico nanocompósito baseado em uma argila do tipo montmorilonita e um polímero derivado do poli(óxido de etileno) plastificado com g-butirolactona foi preparado e caracterizado. Apesar da adição de plastificantes à matriz polimérica aumentar a condutividade iônica de eletrólitos poliméricos, a adição de grande quantidade desses aditivos compromete as propriedades mecânicas do sistema, de tal maneira que o ganho em condutividade não compense a perda na natureza "sólida" do meio eletrolítico. Filmes do eletrólito nanocompósito contendo diferentes concentrações de argila foram caracterizados por análise térmica e mecânica e por espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica. A adição de montmorilonita resultou numa melhora das propriedades mecânicas do eletrólito, além de contribuir para um aumento da condutividade iônica do sistema. O eletrólito compósito foi aplicado em uma célula solar de TiO2/corante pela primeira vez, resultando em um dispositivo com eficiência superior a 3% sob irradiação de 10 mW cm-2.

In this work we report for the first time the preparation and characterization of a novel composite polymer electrolyte based on montmorillonite clay and a poly(ethylene oxide) derivative plasticized with g-butyrolactone and its application in dye sensitized solar cells. Although the plasticizers enhance the ionic conductivity of the polymer electrolytes, they compromise the mechanical stability of the whole system and make the practical application of these devices difficult. Films with composite polymer electrolytes containing different clay content were analyzed by thermal and mechanical analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. We observed that the addition of the inorganic particles to the polymer matrix promotes not only an enhancement in the mechanical properties but also contributes to the increase the of ionic conductivity of the system. A solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell was assembled for this first time with the electrolyte containing montmorillonite clay, displaying efficiencies higher than 3% at 10 mW cm-2.

São reportados os testes realizados com dois módulos capazes de realizar análises de reometria capilar e também induzir a orientação molecular (também chamado como auto-reforçamento) de polímeros, os quais foram projetados e montados neste laboratório. Os módulos são acoplados a uma Máquina Universal de Ensaios, a qual é responsável pela realização dos ensaios, sendo o baixo custo o principal atrativo dos módulos. Os resultados obtidos com o módulo de reometria capilar foram comparados com os obtidos num reômetro comercial e apresentaram boa concordância. O auto-reforçamento foi capaz de induzir a orientação molecular e levar a um aumento de aproximadamente 50% nas propriedades de flexão, se comparadas às amostras não reforçadas.

The results obtained with a capillary rheometer and die-drawing module, designed and assembled in our laboratory, are presented. The modules were connected to a universal stress-strain equipment, which is responsible for the movements and the data acquisition. The results obtained with the capillary module, assembled in this work, were comparable to those obtained with a commercial equipment. The low cost is one of the main advantages of the reported equipment. The die-drawing method was also capable of inducing a molecular orientation and enhancing the flexural properties of a polymer material in comparison to the non-reinforced sample.

A simple experiment for the preparation of transparent conducting glass electrodes by deposition of pure and fluorine doped SnO2 films is described. This procedure was tested in the undergraduate inorganic course at IQ-UNICAMP. The success in achieving a conducting layer was easily checked using the standard probes of a volt-ohm meter. The optical transmittance and thickness were studied by UV-vis spectrophotometry. To discuss the experimental results we place significant emphasis on molecular orbital and energy band model theories. The undergraduate students can also discuss the concepts related to the electronic properties of solids and to interesting new materials, such as transparent conducting films, which are the subject of significant current research and technological applications.

Neste trabalho, o elastômero EPDM foi misturado à Polianilina (PAni) a qual foi dopada com ácido dodecilbenzeno sulfônico (DBSA) na razão molar 1:3. A mistura de EPDM contendo 40%(m/m) de PAni-(DBSA)3 foi realizada em um misturador interno de dois rotores, acessório do reômetro Haake Rheocord 90, a 150°C e 30 rpm. Foram recolhidas amostras em 5, 10, 20, 30 e 40 min de processamento e a morfologia foi avaliada por MEV. A análise microscópica da superfície da amostra mostrou fases completamente distintas em função do tempo de mistura, passando de uma estrutura de duas fases compacta (5 min) até o aparecimento de uma estrutura "tipo esponja" (30 e 40 min). Estas diferenças afetam as propriedades do material como, por exemplo, o comportamento de absorção de radiação eletromagnética de materiais absorvedores de radiação (MARE).

In this work the EPDM elastomer was mixed with Polyaniline (PAni) doped with dodecilbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) using a molar ratio of 1:3 of PAni:DBSA. The EPDM mixture with 40%(w/w) of PAni-(DBSA)3 was carried out using an internal mixer chamber with two rotors coupled to a Haake Rheocord 90 at 150°C and 30 rpm. Aliquots were taken during the processing time of 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 min, and the morphology was evaluated by SEM. The morphology of the blends markedly changes as a function of processing time, from a compact, at 5 min to a sponge-like morphology at 30 and 40 min. These differences influence the material properties, such as electromagnetic radiation absorption of radar absorbing materials (RAM).

Descrevemos neste trabalho as causas e o mecanismo do embranquecimento de peças de polipropileno isotático injetado. Para isto foram injetados corpos de prova e placas com e sem estabilizantes. As amostras foram envelhecidas por exposição ambiental e em equipamento de envelhecimento acelerado (Weatherometer). Foi feito o acompanhamento visual das peças para que pudessem ser caracterizadas quando começassem a embranquecer. A caracterização foi feita através de espectroscopia FT-IR por reflectância, Microscopia eletrônica de varredura, Microfluorescência de raios-X, Reflectância de luz e Microanálise de energia dispersiva (EDS) da superfície. Os espectros de infravermelho mostraram o aparecimento de diversos produtos de degradação como cetonas, aldeídos, ácidos carboxílicos, ésteres, perésteres e alfa-cetoésteres. Quando as amostras começaram a embranquecer foi verificada a formação de fissuras superficiais e o aumento da reflectância de luz para todos os comprimentos de onda do espectro. Concomitantemente foi verificado que a composição de superfície não é alterada pelo envelhecimento. A superfície não apresenta grande quantidade de partículas de TiO2 expostas. Conclui-se que o embranquecimento das peças é devido ao fissuramento superficial que aumenta a quantidade de luz refletida na superfície e não pela migração do pigmento.

We studied in this work the whitening mechanism in injection molded polypropylene (PP), a problem usually manifested in car parts and particularly in car bumpers. For the development of this work we had samples (plaques and test samples) with and without antioxidants and ultraviolet stabilizers. These samples had been already aged by natural and artificial (Weatherometer equipment) exposure. In the natural aging samples were collected when the material started to whiten, after 3190, 4320 and 6190 h of exposure. In the artificial aging samples were collected after 415, 515 and 3000 h of exposure. The samples were characterized by visual observation, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, surface total light reflectance and titanium mapping in the samples cross section by X-ray microfluorescence and X-ray difraction of the TiO2 used in the formulation. When the samples start to whiten we observe the evolution of surface fissures which increase the surface roughness. This is followed by an increase in the total light reflection by the surface for all wavelengths. We observed that titanium is almost homogeneously distributed along samples cross section. In addition, we did not observe high concentration of exposed TiO2 on the surface. We conclude that the whitening phenomenon is a consequence of surface fissures evolution, which provides higher surface roughness and is followed by a higher surface diffuse light reflectance.

Efeitos de morfologia, espessura, oxidação e iluminação dos filmes de polipirrol dopados com dodecilsulfato podem ser observados qualitativamente por EIS e consistem de variações de valores de resistências e capacitâncias de um circuito equivalente proposto, presentes nas interfaces e no interior do material. O circuito se ajusta bem para filmes sintetizados com densidade de carga de 190 mC cm-2. Para filmes mais finos os valores calculados por espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica (EIS) apresentam desvios provavelmente pela ausência de efeitos difusivos. A oxidação dos filmes causa uma diminuição geral da impedância em toda a faixa de freqüências medidas. Os efeitos de morfologia também são observados em todas as freqüências. Os efeitos de iluminação são reversíveis e aparecem, como esperado, apenas quando o polímero está na forma reduzida. A iluminação diminui a resistência interna e a capacitância de carga espacial e aumenta a resistência de transferência de carga e a capacitância de dupla camada.

The morphology, thickness, oxidation and illumination effects in dodecylsulphate doped polypyrrole films can be qualitatively observed by EIS and consist in variations of interfacial and bulk resistances and capacitances of a proposed equivalent circuit. The circuit well with the measured spectra of films obtained with 190 mC cm-2 of synthesis charge density. For thinner films the calculated values observed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) deviate probably due to the absence of diffusion effects. The oxidation of the films diminishes the total impedance over the entire frequency range. The morphology effects are also observed in the entire spectra. The illumination effects are reversible and are observed as expected only in the reduced form of the polymer. The illumination reduces the internal resistance and the space-charge capacitance and increases the charge transfer resistance and the double layer capacitance.
