Resumo A geometria fractal fascina pela capacidade de descrever formas geométricas complexas e que usualmente estão presentes no mundo real . A dimensão fractal ou de Hausdorff d é utilizada para descrever leis de invariância de escala, em que as funções autossimilares seguem uma lei da forma f ( s x ) = s d f ( x ), sendo s o fator de escala. Intimamente relacionado ao problema da invariância de escala está o problema da determinação dos pontos fixos de um sistema, que matematicamente correspondem aos pontos que mapeiam o domínio de uma função para ele mesmo. Em sistemas dinâmicos correspondem ao valor para o qual a resposta do sistema usualmente converge e permanece estável. Na presente contribuição são apresentados os conceitos gerais associados à invariância de escala e ponto fixo, para prontamente empregá-los no problema de associação de impedâncias complexas em série e em topologia de escada. São discutidos em detalhes o problema da função de transferência de linhas de transmissão e o estudo de alguns gráficos de fluxo (flow graphs) de convergência das equações de recursividade.

Abstract Fractal geometry is fascinating due to its ability to describe the complex geometries naturally occurring in real world. The fractal or Hausdorff dimension d is used to describe the laws of scale invariance, which are exemplified by functions satisfying a mathematical law of the form f ( s x ) = s d f ( x ), being s the scale factor. Closely related is the problem of determining the fixed point of physical systems. Mathematically, the fixed point corresponds to a point in the domain of a function which is mapped to itself. In dynamical systems, it typically corresponds to the value to which the response of the system converge and stabilize. The present contribution aims to present the general concepts of scale invariance and fixed or critical points, employing such aspects to the problem of complex impedance association, both in series and in ladder configuration. The complex impedance, and transfer function of transmission lines and flow graphs related to the convergence the iterative equations to a fixed points are discussed in more details.

A ressonância magnética nuclear (RMN) encontra inúmeras aplicações em Física, Química, Engenharia e Medicina. Ela é utilizada sobretudo na análise de composição e estrutura de materiais, tanto sólidos quanto líquidos, e na realização de imagens tomográficas, na área médica, sem a necessidade de submeter o paciente à qualquer tipo de radiação ionizante. O objetivo do presente trabalho é apresentar para estudantes de Física, Química e Engenharia os conceitos físicos básicos da ressonância magnética nuclear, utilizando a mecânica quântica para deduzir as equações de Bloch e apresentar suas soluções em regime de alto campo magnetostático. As condições necessárias para possibilitar o emprego dessa técnica na prática, utilizando a ressonância do próton, serão discutidas em linhas gerais.

The phenomenon of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has numerous applications in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering and Medicine, being used for the analysis materials composition and structure, both in solids and liquids. Medical uses are in tomographic imaging, without the need of submitting the patient to ionizing radiation of any kind. The aim of the present manuscript is to introduce the physical principles of NMR using quantum mechanics in order to deduce Bloch's equations and obtain their solutions in the high magnetostatic field regime. The conditions required for practical uses of the technique, using proton's resonance, will be briefly discussed.

Uma transformação de similaridade é uma relação de equivalência entre matrizes quadradas que preserva o determinante, traço e autovalores da matriz, tendo papel fundamental na mecânica quântica para fins de simplificar sistemas hamiltonianos muito complexos, o que permite melhorar de forma significativa as soluções analíticas no uso de teoria de perturbações. Um exemplo prototípico desse tipo é a teoria BCS para a supercondutividade convencional, derivada de uma transformação de similaridade da interação elétron-fônon original, escrita na forma de segunda quantização. Nesse trabalho, discutimos o método geral para escrever o operador de transformação de similaridade na forma de segunda quantização, permitindo reescrever o hamiltoniano de interação entre férmions e bósons, obtendo uma teoria efetiva em que somente os graus de liberdade de interesse são retidos depois da transformação.

A similarity transformation is an equivalence relation between square matrices which preserves determinant, trace and eigenvalues, playing a key role in quantum mechanics in simplifying complex hamiltonian systems and improving analytical results attainable from the use of perturbation theory. As a prototypical example, the conventional BCS theory of superconductivity is usually derived from a similarity transformation of the original electron-phonon hamiltonian, written in second quantized version. Here we discuss the general method for writing the similarity transformation operator in second quantized form, allowing one to recast a hamiltonian describing an interacting fermion-boson system into an effective theory in which only the desired degrees of freedom are kept after the transformation.

Do ponto de vista eletromagnético, uma ampla gama de materiais não apresentam resposta magnética significativa, podendo ser caracterizados inteiramente por uma grandeza conhecida como permissividade dielétrica complexa, na qual a parte imaginária está associada à condutividade elétrica do material. O objetivo geral deste trabalho é apresentar didaticamente e utilizando instrumentos de medida comumente encontrados nos laboratórios de cursos graduação em física e engenharia, uma técnica simples que permita a caracterização experimental da permissividade dielétrica complexa no espectro de RF, baseada na refletometria no domínio do tempo, permitindo ao estudante associar conceitos teóricos do eletromagnetismo às técnicas experimentais do mundo real. Primeiramente a teoria geral da permissividade dielétrica complexa e sua dependência em relação à frequência e aspectos microscópicos dos materiais será apresentada e brevemente discutida. Posteriormente, será considerada a técnica tradicional de medida de permissividade, baseada no uso de um circuito RC, onde o capacitor é preenchido com o material que se quer caracterizar, evidenciando assim a conexão entre as propriedades do material em teste com grandezas de circuitos elétricos. Na sequência, a técnica da refletometria no domínio do tempo, cuja base está na propagação de ondas eletromagnéticas em linhas de transmissão, é apresentada e detalhadamente discutida. Tendo em vista o aspecto didático, a água e o material FR-4, amplamente empregado na fabricação de placas de circuito impresso, serão caracterizados utilizando a técnica de refletometria.

From the electromagnetic viewpoint, the wide variety of non-magnetic materials can be entirely characterized by a physical quantity known as complex dielectric permittivity, in which the imaginary part is related to the electrical conductivity. The aim of this contribution is to present an experimental technique using standard measurement equipments commonly encountered in didactic laboratories, based on the time domain reflectometry, to measure the dielectric permittivity of materials in the RF spectrum, helping students to perceive the connection between theory and practice. First of all, the general theory of the complex dielectric permittivity is presented and typical dependence of the permittivity versus frequency are briefly discussed and illustrated. Next, we discuss the standard permittivity measurement technique based on the RC circuit, in which the capacitor is filled with the material medium to be characterized. Finally, the time domain reflectometry technique is presented in the context of permittivity determination, and for didactic purposes, water and the material known as FR-4, used in printed circuit boards, are experimentally characterized.

Sistemas elétricos de potência trifásicos podem transmitir grandes quantidades de energia, tipicamente na faixa de 2000 MVA com uma tensão de 765 kV. Sob tais condições extremas, o ar em torno das linhas de transmissão se ioniza, aumentando significativamente a sua condutividade. A presente contribuição propõe um modelo simples, que permite estimar a ionização do ar e a condutividade elétrica, como uma função da densidade de potência que flui no sistema de linhas de energia. Perto das linhas de transmissão, mostra-se que a condutividade do ar é aumentada por várias ordens de grandeza em relação ás condições normais. Neste cenário, a ruptura dielétrica é favorecida por processos de avalanche e a probabilidade de impacto de relâmpagos é discutida de forma significativa.

Three-phase electric power systems can transmit large amounts of power, typically in the range of 2000 MVA with a voltage of 765 kV. Under such extreme conditions, the air surrounding the transmission lines is ionized, which significantly increases the conductivity. The present contribution proposes a simple model which allows one to estimate the ionization and the electric conductivity of the air as a function of the power density flowing in the power line system. Near the transmission lines, it is shown that the air conductivity is increased by several orders of magnitude relative to normal conditions. In this scenario, the dielectric breakdown is favored by avalanche processes and lightning stroke probability is significantly increased.

A equação de ondas paraxial emerge na descrição de diversos problemas em física e engenharia. Por exemplo, na mecânica quântica a equação de Schrödinger é uma aproximação paraxial da teoria relativística. Ela aparece também no estudo da propagação de ondas eletromagnéticas, nas mais variadas situações. Na presente contribuição apresentamos uma revisão geral da equação paraxial e sua obtenção em diversas situações importantes para a física e a engenharia. Analogias entre a equação paraxial no estudo de ondas eletromagnéticas e a equação de Schrödinger da mecânica quântica são discutidas, bem como a relação entre paraxialidade e transversalidade das ondas eletromagnéticas. Por fim, alguns exemplos interessantes de propagação de ondas no limite de paraxialidade são considerados.

The paraxial wave equation describes many problems in Physics and Engineering. For instance, the Schrödinger equation describing non-relativistic particles can be considered as a paraxial approximation of the relativistic quantum mechanics. The paraxial equation also emerges in the study of the electromagnetic waves propagation in a large number of physical situations. In this contribution we present an overview of the paraxial wave equation and its derivation in relevant problems for Physics and Engineering. Analogies between the electromagnetic paraxial equation and the quantum mechanical Schrödinger equation are discussed, as well as the relationship between paraxiality and transversality of electromagnetic waves. Finally, a few interesting examples of wave propagation in the paraxial limit are considered.

O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar os conceitos básicos relacionados aos fenômenos de difração e dispersão, permitindo ao leitor perceber as diferenças fundamentais entre os mesmos. Utilizam-se como ferramentas matemáticas fundamentais as noções gerais da equação de ondas, as equações de Maxwell para ondas planas uniformes e a transformada de Fourier para mostrar que a difração está associada à superposição de ondas monocromáticas com vetores de onda em diferentes direções, tratando-se de um fenômeno espacial, enquanto a dispersão corresponde à superposição de ondas de diferentes frequências e tem portanto um caráter temporal. Embora a ênfase seja dada para as ondas eletromagnéticas, os principais resultados podem ser prontamente generalizados para ondas de qualquer natureza (som, ondas em fluídos ou ondas de matéria no caso da mecânica quântica)

The aim of the present work is to present the basic concepts related to the phenomena of diffraction and dispersion, allowing an understanding of fundamental differences between them. To do this, it was used as the main mathematical tools the general notions of wave equation, Maxwell's equations for uniform plane waves and Fourier transforms, showing that diffraction is a consequence of superposition of monochromatic waves with wave-vectors in distinct directions, being in essence a spatial phenomenon, while dispersion corresponds to the sum of waves having different frequencies producing a phenomenon with an essential temporal character. Despite the fact that we emphasized electromagnetic waves the main results can be promptly generalized to waves of any nature (sound, waves in fluids or matter waves in quantum mechanics)

The description of quantum dynamics of nanomagnets is a central issue in most applications proposed for those systems. In this paper, we put forward a modified perturbation approach to study the spin dynamics of a molecular magnet in the presence of time-dependent magnetic fields.The non-perturbed Hamiltonian H0, which defines the interaction picture, may be time-dependent proviso it can be diagonalized at all times by the same basis of states. We probe the method using a simple model Hamiltonian, that contains the important anisotropy terms relevant for Fe8 molecular clusters, and solve as an example the case with the smallest non trivial spin value (S=1). Our modified perturbation approach converges rapidly to the exact solution, goes beyond the Kubo linear response theory, and is well defined even at resonance. Temperature effects in the spin dynamics are taken into account in the context of the density matrix.

Dá-se o nome difração a um conjunto de fenômenos de natureza inerentemente ondulatória caracterizado pelo encurvamento, alargamento espacial e interferência de ondas que podem ser ondas mecânicas (som, ondas de água), eletromagnéticas ou ondas de matéria no caso da mecânica quântica. Neste trabalho a difração é abordada sob o ponto de vista de um princípio de incerteza e da superposição e interferência de soluções de ondas planas.

Diffraction is a set of inherently wave-like phenomena characterized by the bending, spreading and interference of waves which can be mechanical (sound included), electromagnetic or matter waves in quantum mechanics. In this paper we address the problem of diffraction under the viewpoint of uncertainty principle and superposition of plane waves and interference.
