Abstract Experimental models that consider host-pathogen interactions are relevant for improving knowledge about oral candidiasis. The aim of this study was to assess the epithelial immune responses, Candida penetration of cell monolayers, and virulence during mixed species culture infections. Single species cultures of Candida albicans and mixed cultures (C. albicans, Streptococcus mutans, and Streptococcus sanguinis) were used to infect monolayers of HaCaT and FaDu ATCC HTB-43 cells for 12 h. After infection, IL-18 and IL-34 gene expression was measured to assess epithelial cell immune responses, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was measured as an indicator of cell damage. Microscopy determined C. albicans morphology and penetration of fungal cells through the keratinocyte monolayer. Monolayers devoid of infection served as controls. Data were analyzed by an ANOVA one-way test followed by Tukey’s post-hoc test (α = 0.05). The results found that IL-18 and IL-34 gene expression and LDH activity were significantly (p < 0.05) upregulated for both cell lines exposed to mixed species cultures compared with C. albicans alone. Candida albicans yeast and hyphae were evident in C. albicans only infections. In contrast, monolayers infected by C. albicans, S. mutans, and S. sanguinis exhibited higher microbial invasion with several hyphal aggregates detected. The presence of streptococci in C. albicans infection enhances the virulence and pathogenicity of the fungus with associated increased immune responses and tissue damage. Extrapolation of these findings to oral infection would indicate the added potential benefit of managing bacterial components of biofilms during treatment.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a resposta epithelial imune, a colonização da Candida albicans em monocamadas celulares e sua virulência em resposta a infecções de culturas de biofilme multiespécie. Culturas de biofilme monoespécie de C. albicans e culturas mistas (C. albicans, Streptococcus mutans e Streptococcus sanguinis) foram utilizadas para infectar monocamadas de células HaCaT e FaDu por 12 h. Após a infecção, a expressão dos genes IL-18 e IL-34 foi medida para avaliar as respostas imunes das células epiteliais. A atividade da lactato desidrogenase (LDH) foi medida como um indicador de dano celular. A microscopia determinou a morfologia de C. albicans e a penetração das células fúngicas através da monocamada de queratinócitos. Monocamadas em que não houve infecção serviram como controles. Os dados foram analisados por um teste ANOVA one-way seguido pelo teste post-hoc de Tukey (α = 0,05). Os resultados demonstraram que a expressão gênica de IL-18 e IL-34 e a atividade de LDH foram (p < 0,05) reguladas positivamente para ambas as linhagens de células expostas a culturas de espécies mistas em comparação com C. albicans isoladamente. Leveduras de C.albicans e hifas foram evidentes em infecções apenas por C. albicans. Entretanto, monocamadas infectadas por C. albicans, S. mutans e S. sanguinis exibiram maior invasão microbiana com vários agregados de hifas detectados. Dessa maneira, a presença de estreptococos na infecção por C. albicans aumentou a virulência e a patogenicidade do fungo com respostas imunes aumentadas associadas a danos nos tecidos. A extrapolação desses achados para a infecção oral indicaria o potencial benéfico do controle dos componentes bacterianos em biofilmes durante a terapia da candidíase

Abstract The genus Candida represents the main cause of infections of fungal origin. Some species stand out as disease promoters in humans, such as C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis, and C. tropicalis. This study evaluated the antifungal effects of propyl (E)-3-(furan-2-yl) acrylate. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the synthetic compound, amphotericin B and fluconazole alone against four species of Candida ranged from 64 to 512 μg/mL, 1 to 2 μg/mL, and 32 to 256 μg/mL, respectively. The synergistic effect of the test substance was observed when associated with fluconazole against C. glabrata, there was no antagonism between the substances against any of the tested strains. The potential drug promoted morphological changes in C. albicans, decreasing the amount of resistance, virulence, and reproduction structures, such as the formation of pseudohyphae, blastoconidia, and chlamydospores, ensuring the antifungal potential of this substance. It was also possible to identify the fungicidal profile of the test substance through the study of the growth kinetics of C. albicans. Finally, it was observed that the test compound inhibited the ergosterol biosynthesis by yeast.

In this study, a hydroxyapatite (HA) coating derived from the scales of the Amazonian fish pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) was produced using calcination at 500 and 750 °C and deposited on AISI 316 stainless steel substrate using the process of thermal spraying, high velocity suspension plasma spray (HVSPS). To verify its potential, this material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), by which characteristic peaks of hydroxyapatite were evidenced. Via X-ray fluorescence (XRF) of the samples, it was observed that the Ca/P ratio was equal to 2.00. Using the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, it was possible to observe the characteristic bands of the HA. For the coating, the mechanical nanoindentation test showed mean Vickers microhardness (VH) values of 93.25 VH for the hydroxyapatite and of 196.57 HV for the substrate. The modulus of elasticity (EIT) was 77.85 GPa for the hydroxyapatite coating and 136.45 GPa for the substrate. Optical microscopy showed that the coating was homogeneously deposited.

Abstract The formation of biofilm on denture bases is a recurrent clinical problem that favors the development of denture stomatitis. The effectiveness of a hygiene protocol in a 3D-printed denture base resin is still uncertain. Objective To evaluate of the effectiveness of immersion, associated or not with brushing in a soap solution, on the biofilm control of a 3D-printed denture base resin. Methodology Specimens of denture base resins [Cosmos Denture (COS) and Classico (CLA/control)] were contaminated in vitro with Candida albicans and immersed in sodium hypochlorite 0.25% (SH, alkaline peroxide) AP, chlorhexidine digluconate 2% (CD or PBS-Control), associated or not with brushing with 0.78% Lifebuoy soap. Roughness was evaluated before and after brushing and immersion. The effectiveness of the protocols was assessed by CFU/mL, cellular metabolism (XTT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and confocal scanning laser microscopy. Data were analyzed by T student, ANOVA/Welch, and Tukey/Gomes–Howell pos-hoc tests (α = 0.05). Results CLA showed greater roughness than COS. CFU/mL and XTT were higher in COS resin with a higher hyphae formation. Immersion in SH and CD eliminated CFU/mL and reduced XTT for both resins, associated or not with brushing. AP reduced CFU/mL only when associated with brushing. Conclusions The biofilm on the 3D-printed resin was thicker and presumably more pathogenic, regardless of its smoother surface. Immersions in SH 0.25% and CD 2% are effective hygiene protocols for both resins, associated or not with brushing. AP should be recommended when associated with brushing with a Lifebuoy 0.78% solution.

ABSTRACT The study aimed to assess the effect of progressive neutralization on the antimicrobial properties against bacteria and yeasts of wood vinegar obtained from the pyrolysis of Eucalyptus urograndis (clone I144) wood. Wood samples were carbonized at a heating rate of 0.9 °C min-1 until a final temperature of 450 °C, totalizing 8 hours of carbonization. The raw pyrolysis liquids were left to settle, and the aqueous fraction was separated. Then, the aqueous fraction (raw wood vinegar - WV) was purified to yield the WV. WV samples were collected and neutralized from pH 2.5 until 7.5 (2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, and 7.5, by adding NaOH solution. Through the broth microdilution method, the antimicrobial effect of the neutralized samples at each pH was assessed on Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), Salmonella enteritidis (ATCC 13076), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Streptococcus agalactiae (CEPA CLINICA), and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal (and fungicidal) concentrations were determined through in vitro technics. Results were subjected to logarithmic regression analysis, and statistical models were fitted for each microorganism in the assessed pH range; as pH increased, a progressive decrease in the CIM increased, demanding higher concentrations of WV to inhibit microbial growth. The more resistant strains were S. aureus and S. agalactiae, which required an increase in WV concentration from a minimum of 6.25% at pH 2.5 to reaching 50% at pH 6.0. When at pH 7.0, both strains were not inhibited even at 50% (the highest concentration evaluated in the study). In contrast, C. albicans proved to be the most sensitive strain, starting from 3.12% EP at pH 2.5 and requiring only 25% for inhibition at pH 7.0. The behavior of P. aeruginosa and S. enteritidis followed the pattern of C. albicans, differing only at pH 7.0, where they required 50% of EP. As observed, even at neutral and slightly alkaline pH, the inhibitory activity of EP on microbial growth was maintained to some extent. Nevertheless, even when neutral and slightly alkaline pH values are reached, the inhibitory activity remains at a certain level. Higher pH values of the WV were associated with lower antimicrobial activity. However, its activity remained even at neutral and slightly alkaline pH values.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da neutralização progressiva na atividade antimicrobiana do extrato pirolenhoso (EP) da madeira do híbrido Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis (clone I144). Amostras de madeira foram carbonizadas a uma taxa de aquecimento de 0.9 °C min-1 até a temperatura final de 450 °C, perfazendo 8 horas de carbonização. Os líquidos brutos da carbonização foram deixados em repouso e a fração aquosa foi separada. A fração aquosa correspondente ao EP bruto foi destilada obtendo o EP purificado. Alíquotas de EP purificado foram progressivamente neutralizadas do pH 2.5 até 7.5, respectivamente, 2,5, 3,0, 3,5, 4,0, 4,5, 5,0, 5,5, 6,0, 6,5, 7,0, e 7,5, por meio da adição de NaOH. Com o método da micro-diluição em caldo, o efeito antimicrobiano das amostras neutralizadas em cada pH foi avaliado contra Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), Salmonella enteritidis (ATCC 13076), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Streptococcus agalactiae (CEPA CLINICA) e Candida albicans (ATCC 10231). As concentrações inibitórias mínimas e as concentrações bactericida e fungicida mínimas foram determinadas por técnicas in vitro. Os resultados foram analisados por regressão logarítmica e modelos estatísticos foram ajustados para cada microrganismo em cada pH. Na determinação da CIM, foi detectada uma perda progressiva da atividade antimicrobiana do EP com a neutralização, exigindo, conforme o pH caminhava para 7.0, concentrações mais elevadas de EP para resultar em inibição. As cepas que demonstraram maior resistência foram S. aureus e S. agalactiae. Esses microrganismos partiram da exigência de concentrações de 6.25% de EP, em pH inicial (2.5), e chegaram a requerer 50% em pH 6.0. Quando em pH 7.0, ambas as cepas não foram inibidas nem a 50% (maior concentração avaliada no estudo). Em contrapartida, C. albicans se mostrou a cepa mais sensível, partindo de 3.12% de EP, em pH de 2.5, e exigindo apenas 25% para inibição em pH 7.0. O comportamento de P. aeruginosa e S. enteritidis acompanhou o padrão da C. albicans, diferenciando-se apenas em pH 7.0, onde exigiram 50% de EP. Como observado, mesmo em pH neutro e ligeiramente alcalino, a atividade inibitória do EP ao crescimento microbiano se manteve em certa extensão.

RESUMO: Descreve-se um caso de infarto cerebral e meningoencefalite trombótica devido a candidíase em um bezerro de sete meses de idade. A morte ocorreu três dias após o início de apatia, febre e desvio lateral da cabeça para a esquerda. As alterações macroscópicas no cérebro consistiam em assimetria dos hemisférios telencefálicos; o hemisfério direito estava aumentado, causando herniação cerebelar. Uma extensa área vermelha focal foi observada na superfície do lobo occipital direito. Nos cortes transversais do encéfalo fixado, as lesões revelaram áreas extensas, marrom-avermelhadas, moles ou cavitadas, afetando a substância branca e cinzenta desde o nível do tálamo até o cerebelo e comprimindo as estruturas subjacentes. Histologicamente, havia meningoencefalite necrossupurativa multifocal aguda, coalescente, associada a vasculite, congestão, trombose, edema, infarto e hifas fúngicas intralesionais. O diagnóstico de infarto cerebral e meningoencefalite trombótica devido a candidíase foi feito pelas alterações patológicas, coloração e características morfológicas do agente e imuno-histoquímica. O infarto cerebral e meningoencefalite trombótica em bovinos pode resultar de lesões vasculares devido à infecção por Candida sp.; embora incomum, este caso demonstra que a candidíase deve fazer parte de uma lista de diagnósticos diferenciais de lesões cerebrais graves em bovinos. ABSTRACT: We described a case of cerebral infarction and thrombotic meningoencephalitis due to candidiasis in a seven-month-old calf. The death occurred three days after the onset of apathy, fever, and the head’s lateral deviation to the left. Macroscopic changes in the brain consisted of asymmetry of telencephalic hemispheres; the right hemisphere was enlarged, causing cerebellar herniation. A focally extensive red area was observed on the surface of the right occipital lobe. At cross-sections of the fixed brain, the lesions revealed to be extensive, red-brown, soft or cavitated areas affecting the white and grey matter from the level of the thalamus to the cerebellum and compressing subjacent structures. Histologically, there was acute, coalescent, multifocal necrosupurative meningoencephalitis, associated with vasculitis, congestion, thrombosis, edema, infarction, and intralesional fungal hyphae. The diagnosis of cerebral infarction and thrombotic meningoencephalitis due to candidiasis was made by the pathological changes, the staining and morphological characteristics of the agent, and immunohistochemistry. The cerebral infarction and thrombotic meningoencephalitis in cattle can result from vascular lesions due to infection by Candida sp.; although uncommon, this case demonstrated that candidiasis should be part of a list of differential diagnoses of severe brain injuries in cattle. ABSTRACT: This study describes the epidemiological and clinical-pathological aspects of outbreaks of avian pox diagnosed in poultry associated with fungal co-infections. A retrospective study was carried out, and cases of avian pox with suspected associated fungal infection were selected. The slides were subjected to routine and special histochemical staining in cases of suspected fungal infection, in addition to performing the immunohistochemical technique. Macroscopically, there were nodular lesions with crust formation, and histologically, the lesions were characterized by hyperplasia of the spinous layer associated with multiple eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusions. In seven cases, morphologically compatible structures with fungi were verified through black impregnation with GMS and strongly stained in pink with PAS. The morphotintorial aspects were suggestive of fungi belonging to the genus Aspergillus sp. and Candida sp. The diagnosis of fungal co-infections was confirmed through immunohistochemistry, with positive immunostaining for fungi of the genus Aspergillus sp. (five cases) and Candida sp. (two cases). It is concluded that the occurrence of fungal co-infections secondary to the cutaneous lesions of avian pox represents a complicating factor of the disease, favoring the weakness of these animals and death. Therefore, the investigation of associated secondary agents is necessary.

RESUMO: Este artigo descreve os aspectos epidemiológicos e clínico-patológicos de surtos de varíola aviária diagnosticada em aves domésticas associados a coinfecções fúngicas. Foi realizado um estudo retrospectivo e selecionados os casos de varíola aviária com suspeita de infecção fúngica associada. As lâminas foram submetidas às colorações histoquímicas de rotina e especiais, nos casos de suspeita de infecção fúngica, além de realização da técnica de imuno-histoquímica. Macroscopicamente, haviam lesões nodulares com formação de crostas, e histologicamente, as lesões caracterizavam-se por hiperplasia da camada espinhosa associada a múltiplas inclusões intracitoplasmáticas eosinofílicas. Em sete casos verificou-se a presença de estruturas morfologicamente compatíveis com fungos, através de impregnação em preto por GMS e coradas fortemente em rosa por PAS. Os aspectos morfotintoriais foram sugestivos de fungos pertencentes aos gêneros Aspergillus sp. e Candida sp. O diagnóstico das coinfecções fúngicas foi confirmado através da imuno-histoquímica, com imunomarcação positiva para fungos dos gêneros Aspergillus sp. (cinco casos) e Candida sp. (dois casos). Através desses dados, pode-se concluir que a ocorrência de coinfecções fúngicas secundárias às lesões cutâneas de varíola aviária representam um fator complicador da doença, favorecendo a debilidade desses animais e óbito. Sendo assim, é necessária a investigação de agentes secundários associados.

Resumo Com o objetivo de compreender os significados psicológicos e relacionais da experiência da maternidade diante da toxoplasmose, realizou-se uma pesquisa clínico-qualitativa, em que foram realizadas entrevistas semidirigidas com cinco mães de bebês com toxoplasmose. As informações foram submetidas à análise de conteúdo e os resultados demonstraram que os significados psicológicos incluem tanto a presença de dificuldades e sofrimento, quanto de potencialidade dos bebês e do estabelecimento de vínculo emocional mãe-bebê. Com relação aos significados relacionais, identificou-se a importância das redes de apoio, destacando-se o papel de familiares, serviços de saúde e da religiosidade como fonte de suporte para o enfrentamento das dificuldades. Contudo, identificou-se que a atenção é dispensada primordialmente aos bebês, sendo insuficiente a assistência emocional para as mães. Em conclusão, destaca-se que cada mãe experienciou a toxoplasmose a partir das suas possibilidades e das redes de apoio disponíveis, o que afetou no estabelecimento da vinculação mãe-bebê.

Abstract With the purpose of understanding the psychological and relational meanings of the experience of motherhood in the face of toxoplasmosis, a clinical-qualitative study was carried out performing semi-directed interviews with five mothers of babies with toxoplasmosis. The information was submitted to Content Analysis, and the results demonstrated that the psychological meanings include both the presence of difficulties and suffering and the potentiality of the babies and the establishment of emotional mother-baby bonds. Relative to the relational meanings, the importance of support networks was identified, emphasizing the role of family members, health services, and religiosity as sources of support in facing difficulties. However, it was identified that the care is provided primordially to the babies, with the emotional assistance to mothers being insufficient. In conclusion, it stands out that each mother experienced toxoplasmosis from their possibilities and available support network, which affected the establishment of the mother-baby bond.

Resumen Para comprender los significados psicológicos y relacionales de la maternidad frente a la toxoplasmosis, se realizó una investigación clínico-cualitativa, en la que se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas con cinco madres de bebés con toxoplasmosis. La información fue sometida a Análisis de Contenido y los resultados demostraron que los significados psicológicos incluyen tanto la presencia de dificultades y sufrimiento, como la potencialidad de los bebés para el establecimiento de un vínculo emocional con sus madres. Considerando los significados relacionales, se identificó la importancia de las redes de apoyo, destacando el papel de la familia, los servicios de salud y la religiosidad como soporte frente a las dificultades. Sin embargo, se identificó que la atención se presta principalmente a los bebés, con asistencia emocional insuficiente para las madres. Como conclusión, se enfatiza que cada madre ha experimentado toxoplasmosis en función de sus posibilidades y de las redes de apoyo disponibles, lo que ha afectado el establecimiento de la conexión madre-bebé.

No entanto, as desigualdades de gênero persistem em quatro aspectos: as mulheres ainda representam parcela minoritária na ciência mundial; concentram-se em determinadas áreas de conhecimento; predominam nos níveis iniciais da carreira e são sub-representadas em posições deliberativas da política científica e tecnológica. No Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), apesar do aumento de mulheres bolsistas de Produtividade em Pesquisa (PQ) nas últimas décadas, as assimetrias permanecem. Este estudo visou discutir as assimetrias de gênero e raça nas diferentes áreas do conhecimento, em particular na psicologia, tomando como analisador a distribuição de bolsas (PQ) do CNPq. Utilizaram-se dados disponibilizados pelo CNPq e coletados por meio de SurveyMonkey. As desigualdades de gênero na ciência persistem no sistema científico brasileiro: as mulheres são minoria entre os bolsistas PQ/CNPq, concentram-se em guetos disciplinares e enfrentam dificuldades tanto para acessar o sistema PQ quanto para alcançar as modalidades de bolsa de maior prestígio científico. Na psicologia, apesar da presença em todas as modalidades de bolsa, ocupam proporcionalmente menos posições no topo da carreira. Ademais, há invisibilidade de mulheres negras e indígenas, a qual tem suas raízes no projeto moderno colonial.

RESUMO Introdução: Os fitoconstituintes são moléculas naturais que apresentam atividade antimicrobiana satisfatória e devem ser estudados quanto ao seu uso como novas substâncias para irrigação dos canais radiculares. Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito inibitório dos fitoconstituintes cinamaldeído e α-terpineol frente a biofilmes monoespécie e duoespécie de microrganismos envolvidos na infecção endodôntica. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo experimental na área de microbiologia aplicada, in vitro, cego quanto às análises e randomizado. Foram selecionados os fitoconstituintes cinamaldeído e α-terpineol. A atividade antimicrobiana frente Candida albicans e Enterococcus faecalis foi avaliada por meio da análise da capacidade metabólica com o uso da resazurina e análise da viabilidade celular pelo plaqueamento. O meio de cultura e a clorexidina 1% serviram de controle negativo e positivo, respectivamente. Resultados: Observou-se ausência de crescimento para exposição dos biofilmes nas concentrações de 10 e 5 mg/mL de ambos os fitoconstituintes. Na concentração de 2,5 mg/mL de terpineol, constatou-se crescimento somente nos biofilmes monoespécie de C. albicans e duoespécie. Já na concentração de 1mg/mL de terpineol e cinamaldeído, verificou-se crescimento para todos os biofilmes. Conclusão: O cinamaldeído e α-terpineol apresentaram atividade inibitória frente biofilmes monoespécie e duoespécie de Candida albicans e Enterococcus faecalis, nas concentrações de 10 e 5 mg/mL.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Phytoconstituents are natural molecules displaying satisfactory antimicrobial activity. Studies should be conducted about their use as new root canal irrigants. Objective: Evaluate the inhibitory effect of the phytoconstituents cinnamaldehyde and α-terpineol against mono- and duo-species biofilms of microorganisms involved in endodontic infection. Methods: An experimental applied microbiology blind randomized in vitro study was conducted. The phytoconstituents selected were cinnamaldehyde and α-terpineol. Antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans and Enterococcus faecalis was evaluated by metabolic capacity analysis with resazurin and cell viability analysis by the plaque. The culture medium and 1% chlorhexidine served as negative and positive controls, respectively. Results: An absence of growth was observed for exposure of the biofilms at concentrations of 10 and 5 mg/ml of both phytoconstituents. At a concentration of 2.5 mg/ml terpineol displayed growth only in the mono-species biofilms of C. albicans and duo-species biofilms. At a concentration of 1 mg/ml terpineol and cinnamaldehyde displayed growth in all biofilms. Conclusions: Cinnamaldehyde and α-terpineol displayed inhibitory activity against mono- and duo-species biofilms of Candida albicans and Enterococcus faecalis at concentrations of 10 and 5 mg/ml.

RESUMEN Introducción: Los fitoconstituyentes son moléculas naturales que presentan actividad antimicrobiana satisfactoria y deben ser estudiados en cuanto a su uso como nuevas sustancias para irrigación de los canales radiculares. Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto inhibitorio de fitoconstituyentes cinamaldehído y α-terpineol frente a biopelículas monoespecies y duoespecies de microorganismos involucrados en la infección endodóntica. Métodos: Estudio experimental en el campo de la microbiología aplicada, in vitro, ciego al análisis y aleatorizado. Se seleccionaron los fitoconstituyentes cinamaldehído y α-terpineol. La actividad antimicrobiana frente Candida albicans y Enterococcus faecalis fue evaluada por medio del análisis de la capacidad metabólica con el uso de la resazurina y análisis de la viabilidad celular por el plaqueamiento. El medio de cultivo y la clorexidina 1 % sirvieron de control negativo y positivo, respectivamente. Resultados: Se observó ausencia de crecimiento para exposición de las biopelículas en las concentraciones de 10 y 5 mg/mL de ambos fitoconstituyentes. En la concentración de 2,5 mg/mL de terpineol se constató crecimiento solo en los biofilmios monoespecies de C. albicans y duoespecies. En la concentración de 1 mg/mL de terpineol y cinamaldehído se verificó crecimiento para todas las biopelículas. Conclusiones: Cinamaldehído y α-terpineol presentaron actividad inhibitoria frente a biofilmes monoespecies y duoespecies de Candida albicans y Enterococcus faecalis, en las concentraciones de 10 y 5 mg/mL.

ABSTRACT Objectives: Candida spp. has been reported as one of the common agents of nosocomial bloodstream infections and is associated with a high mortality. Therefore, this study evaluated the clinical findings, local epidemiology, and microbiological aspects of candidemia in eight tertiary medical centers in the state of Parana, South of Brazil. Methods: In this study, we reported 100 episodes of candidemia in patients admitted to eight different hospitals in five cities of the state of Parana, Brazil, using data collected locally (2016 and 2017) and tabulated online. Results: The incidence was found to be 2.7 / 1000 patients / day and 1.2 / 1000 admissions. C. albicans was responsible for 49% of all candidemia episodes. Cancer and surgery were the two most common underlying conditions associated with candidemia. The mortality rate within 30 days was 48%, and removal of the central venous catheter (p = 0.029) as well as empirical or prophylactic exposure to antifungals were both related to improved survival (p = 0.033). Conclusions: This study highlights the high burden and mortality rates of candidemia in hospitals from Parana as well as the need to enhance antifungal stewardship program in the enrolled medical centers.

Resumo: Interessa-nos investigar as principais contribuições latino-americanas dos estudos decoloniais sobre o conceito de gênero, pois entendemos que tal conceito pode operar uma forma de colonialidade ao invisibilizar a multiplicidade de cosmovisões e práticas socioculturais que produzem relações sociais diferenciadas. Para tanto, realizamos uma revisão integrativa da produção científica sobre gênero em articulação com o pensamento decolonial no Portal de Periódicos CAPES e na Redalyc. Após o crivo de inclusão-exclusão, 35 artigos foram analisados. Os resultados apontam para: (a) negação do sujeito universal do feminismo; (b) compreensão de gênero, raça e classe como variáveis coconstitutivas; e (c) questionamento sobre a aplicação do conceito em realidades com diferentes lógicas culturais. A discussão sobre gênero na perspectiva decolonial vem se fortalecendo, especialmente no Brasil, mas ainda demanda esforços em pensar as heranças da colonialidade na atualidade.

Abstract: We are interested in investigating the main Latin American contributions to decolonial studies about the concept of gender, as we understand that it can operate as a type of coloniality as it makes invisible many worldviews and socio-cultural practices that produce different social relations. For this end, we made an integrative view of scientific production on gender alongside decolonial thought on the Portal de Periódicos CAPES and on Redalyc. After applying the inclusion-exclusion criteria, 35 articles were analyzed. The results pointed to (a) denial of the feminist universal subject; (b) the understanding of gender, race and class as co-constitutive variables; and (c) questioning the applicability of the concept in different cultural logics. The discussion on gender on the decolonial perspective has been strengthened, especially in Brazil, but it still demands efforts on reflections on colonial inheritances in current times.

Resumen: Nos interesa investigar las principales contribuiciones latinoamericanas de los estudios decoloniales acerca del concepto de género, porque entendemos que el mismo puede operar una forma de colonialidad al invisibilizar la multiplicidad de cosmovisiones y prácticas socioculturales que producen relaciones sociales diferenciadas. Para tanto, realizamos una revisión intregrativa de la producción científica sobre género en articulación con el pensamiento decolonial en los Periódicos CAPES y en Redalyc. Después del proceso de inclusión-exclusión, 35 artículos fueron analizados. Los resultados apuntan para: (a) negación del sujeto universal del feminismo; (b) comprensión de género, raza y clases como variables co-constitutivas; y (c) cuestionamiento sobre la aplicación del concepto en realidades con diferentes lógicas culturales. La discusión sobre género en la perspectiva decolonial viene fortaleciéndose, especialmente en Brasil; sin embargo aún demanda esfuerzos por pensar las herencias de la colonialidad en la actualidad.

Resumo Introdução As resinas compostas são alternativas restauradoras, porém sua superfície pode favorecer o acúmulo de biofilme. Objetivo Analisar in vitro a adesão de biofilmes de Streptococcus mutans (UA159) e Candida albicans (ATCC 90028) em superfícies de resinas compostas convencionais e bulk fill. Material e método Foram utilizadas quatro marcas de resinas compostas e bulk fill: Aura Bulk Fill - SDI®; Premisa - Kerr®; Opallis- FGM®, e Filtek bulk fill flow - 3M®. Utilizou-se saliva artificial para formação da película salivar, por 60 min a 37 °C. O inóculo foi padronizado em 1×108 UFC/mL para S. mutans e 1×106 UFC/mL para C. albicans. Os espécimes (n=8/grupo) foram acondicionados em placas de 24 poços, com BHI suplementado com sacarose para as bactérias, e RPMI 1640, para os fungos. A formação do biofilme foi avaliada considerando as unidades formadoras de colônia (UFC/mL).Os dados foram analisados por ANOVA e Tukey (p<0,05). Resultado Para os biofilmes de S. mutans, não houve diferença significativa na contagem de UFC/mL entre os diferentes tipos de resina (p=0,119). Na contagem de UFC/mL para biofilme de Candida, as médias variaram entre 7,78 e 8,34. Houve diferença significativa entre as marcas, especialmente entre as resinas convencionais e bulk fill. Conclusão O presente estudo demonstra que não há diferença na adesão para biofilmes de S. mutans. Porém, há diferença na adesão da C. albicans na superfície de diferentes resinas compostas.

Abstract Introduction Composite resins are restorative alternatives, but their surface may favor the accumulation of biofilm. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro adhesion of Streptococcus mutans (UA159) and Candida albicans (ATCC 90028) biofilms on the surface of conventional and bulk fill composites. Material and method Four brands of conventional and bulk fill composites were used, Aura Bulk Fill - SDI®, Premisa - Kerr®, Opallis- FGM® and Filtek bulk fill flow - 3M®. Artificial saliva was used to form the salivary film for 60 min at 37 ° C. The inoculum was standardized at 1x108 CFU/mL for S. mutans and 1x106 CFU/mL for C. albicans. The specimens (n = 8/group) were placed in 24-well plates, with BHI supplemented with sucrose for bacteria and RPMI 1640 for fungi. The biofilm formation was evaluated considering the colony forming units (CFU/mL). The data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey test (p <0.05). Result For S. mutans biofilms, there was no significant difference in the CFU/mL count between the different types of composites (p = 0.119). In the CFU / mL count for C.albicans biofilm, the CFU/mL ranged from 7.78 to 8.34. There was a significant difference between brands for Candida, especially between conventional and bulk fill composites. Conclusion The present study demonstrates that there is no difference in adhesion for S. mutans biofilms. On the other hand, there is a difference in the adhesion of C. albicans to the surface of different composite resins.

RESUMO Objetivo: Compreender a Espiritualidade/Religiosidade vivenciadas por pessoas com doença falciforme e sua influência sobre o enfrentamento da doença. Método: Estudo qualitativo, descritivo, exploratório, realizado no Estado da Bahia. Participaram 29 pessoas que responderam a entrevistas semiestruturadas. O material empírico foi submetido a análise de conteúdo. Resultados: Pessoas com doença falciforme vivenciam a Espiritualidade/Religiosidade motivadas pela esperança de um milagre e por medo da morte; seus ritos são as leituras de textos religiosos, orações individuais e em grupo, e frequência a cultos; os efeitos sobre sua saúde são: conforto através do coping de comparação, alívio da ansiedade, apoio social, mudança no estilo de vida, porém a Espiritualidade/Religiosidade podem manifestar-se prejudicadas. Considerações finais: Este estudo ressalta a necessidade da qualificação dos profissionais de saúde para a abordagem das questões espirituais dessas pessoas adoecidas, com a preocupação de diagnosticar possíveis sofrimentos, angústias e assim prestar auxílio, conforto e fortalecer os vínculos espirituais desses indivíduos.

ABSTRACT Objective: To understand spirituality/religiosity as experienced by people with sickle cell disease, and its influence on coping with the disease. Method: A qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study conducted in the State of Bahia. Twenty-nine respondents participated in semi-structured interviews. Content analysis was used to analyze the empirical material. Results: Individuals with sickle cell disease experience spirituality/religiosity motivated by their hope for a miracle, and fear of death; among their rites are: reading religious materials, individual and group prayer, and attendance at worship services. The effects on their health include: comfort by means of coping by comparing two evils, anxiety relief, social support, and lifestyle changes; however, spirituality/religiosity may be impaired. Final considerations: This study demonstrates the need to qualify health professionals to address spiritual issues of these individuals during illness, with the aims of diagnosing suffering and anguish, and providing care, comfort and strengthening of the spiritual bonds of these individuals.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Entender la espiritualidad / religiosidad como la experimentan las personas con enfermedad de células falciformes y su influencia en el afrontamiento de la enfermedad. Método: Un estudio cualitativo, descriptivo y exploratorio realizado en el estado de Bahía. Veintinueve encuestados participaron en entrevistas semiestructuradas. Se utilizó análisis de contenido para analizar el material empírico. Resultados: Las personas con enfermedad de células falciformes experimentan espiritualidad / religiosidad motivadas por su esperanza de un milagro y el miedo a la muerte; entre sus ritos se encuentran: lectura de materiales religiosos, oración individual y grupal, y asistencia a los servicios de adoración. Los efectos en su salud incluyen: comodidad mediante el manejo del afrontamiento, alivio de la ansiedad, apoyo social y cambios en el estilo de vida; sin embargo, la espiritualidad / religiosidad puede verse afectada. Consideraciones finales: Este estudio demuestra la necesidad de preparar a los profesionales de la salud para abordar los problemas espirituales de estos individuos durante la enfermedad, con el objetivo de diagnosticar el sufrimiento y la angustia, y de brindar atención, comodidad y fortalecimiento de los vínculos espirituales de estos individuos.
