Resume Cet article analyse la relation entre religion et tabagisme chez les fonctionnaires des campi universitaires de Rio de Janeiro et les participants à l’Étude Pró-Saúde des vagues 1 (1999, n=4030) et 4 (2012-13, n=2933) . Des questionnaires auto-administrés ont été utilisés; les associations transversales et longitudinales entre les variables indépendantes (religion) et dépendantes (fumeur/non-fumeur) ont été estimées via des rapports de cotes dans des modèles de régression logistique ajustés en fonction de l’âge, du sexe, de la race/couleur, de l’état matrimonial, de la fréquence religieuse et de l’éducation. Resumen Este trabajo analiza la relación entre la religión y el uso del tabaco en funcionarios públicos de campus universitarios en Rio de Janeiro y participantes del Estudio Pró-Saúde en sus versiones 1 (1999, n=4030) y 4 (2012-13, n=2933). Para esta investigación, fueron utilizados cuestionarios autoadministrados; asociaciones transversales y longitudinales entre las variables independiente (religión) y dependiente (fumar/no fumar), al igual que se estimaron razones de probabilidad en modelos de regresión logística ajustados para edad, sexo, raza/color, situación conyugal, frecuencia religiosa y escolaridad. Abstract This study examines the relationship between religion and tobacco use among university civil servants in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that participated in waves 1 (1999, n = 4030) and 4 (2012-13, n = 2933) of the Pro-Saúde Study. We employed self-administered questionnaires and logistic regression models to estimate cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between the independent (religion) and dependent (smoking/non-smoking) variables adjusted for age, sex, race/color, marital status, religious attendance, and schooling. Our results show that Pentecostal evangelical respondents, for example, were less likely to smoke and initiate tobacco use between the two survey waves than those of Afro-Brazilian religions. This study contributes to understanding the relationship between religion and health by including longitudinal data on the transition to smoking and its stopping. It also indicates the importance of investigating the topic in relation to other health habits and conditions. Abstract Objectives: to evaluate the association between breastfeeding and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in children and adolescents. Methods: this is a case-control study carried out in the north of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, which included 248 children and adolescents diagnosed with ASD (case group) and 886 children and adolescents without a diagnosis of ASD (control group).Interviews were conducted with the mothers of children and adolescents and a semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. For data analysis, a multiple logistic regression model was adopted. The magnitude of associations was estimated by the odds ratio (OR). Three multiple models were fitted: Model 1: presence or absence of breastfeeding; Model 2: duration of breastfeeding; Model 3: duration of exclusive breastfeeding. Results: ASD was associated with the absence of breastfeeding in the three adjusted models: Model 1: OR=2.1, CI95%=1.1-4.1; Model 2: OR=2.3, CI95%=1.2-4.5; Model 3: OR=2.3, CI95%=1.2-4.5. Resumo Objetivos: avaliar a associação entre aleitamento materno e Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo (TEA) em crianças e adolescentes. Métodos: trata-se de um estudo caso-controle realizado no norte de Minas Gerais, Brasil, que incluiu 248 crianças e adolescentes com diagnóstico de TEA (grupo caso) e 886 crianças e adolescentes sem diagnóstico de TEA (grupo controle). Foram realizadas entrevistas com as mães das crianças e adolescentes e utilizado um questionário semiestruturado para coleta dos dados. Para análise dos dados foi adotado modelo de regressão logística múltipla. A magnitude das associações foi estimada pela Odds Ratio (OR). Três modelos múltiplos foram ajustados: Modelo 1: presença ou ausência de aleitamento materno; Modelo 2: duração do aleitamento materno; Modelo 3: duração do aleitamento materno exclusivo. Abstract This study evaluated the median lethal concentration of silver nanoparticles and their effects in fish tambaqui Colossoma macropomum. Therefore, an acute toxicity assay was carried out in completely randomized design evaluating six different concentrations of silver nanoparticles on blood parameters of tambaqui. The silver nanoparticles were produced by chemical reduction with polyvinyl alcohol (AgNP-PVA). The lethal concentration 50% (LC50) was estimated using probit regression. The blood was collected, analyzed and the data were submitted to T-test (dying x surviving fish) and Tukey test (surviving fish). An increase in glucose, hematocrit, total plasma protein, hemoglobin, erythrocytes, leukocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils as well as reduced MCV (mean corpuscular volume) in dying fish compared to surviving fish were observed. Survived fish exposed to 187.5 µg/L showed an increase in hematocrit, MCV, and MCH and a reduction in erythrocytes, total numbers of leukocyte, thrombocyte, lymphocyte, and neutrophil. The fish exposed to concentrations below 125 µg/L, had returned the blood parameter to baselines compared to control. Abstract Despite being an important component of the freshwater ecosystems and an important factor controlling wild fish populations, Amazonian fish parasites have been poorly studied. Here, we analyzed the fauna of metazoan parasites from 10 detritivorous and omnivorous fish species from Amapá Lake in the western Amazon. Of 159 fish specimens examined, 73.6% were parasitized by one or more species of metazoan parasites. A total of 5,260 parasites (24 Monogenea, 14 Nematoda, 10 Digenea, 2 Acanthocephala, and 6 Crustacea) were identified. Aggregated dispersion pattern of parasites was observed. There was a predominance of endohelminth species that presented a similar pattern regarding the level of component communities (i.e., a low species number, low diversity and dominance of a single species, mainly the digeneans and nematodes in their larval stages). Five species of parasites presented correlation with the body size of the hosts. In the fish community, the presence of endoparasites in the larval and adult stages suggests that these are intermediate, paratenic and definitive hosts, reflecting their detritivorous or omnivorous feeding habits. Resumo Apesar de ser um importante componente dos ecossistemas de água doce e um importante fator controlador das populações naturais de peixes, os parasitos de peixes amazônicos ainda são pouco estudados. Foi analisada a fauna de parasitos metazoários em 10 espécies de peixes detritívoros e onívoros do Lago Amapá na Amazônia ocidental. Dos 159 espécimes de peixes examinados, 73,6% estavam parasitados por uma ou mais espécies de parasitos metazoários. Um total de 5.260 parasitos (24 Monogenea, 14 Nematoda, 10 Digenea, 2 Acanthocephala e 6 Crustacea) foram identificados. Houve um padrão de dispersão agregado de parasitos. ABSTRACT Brazil stands out as one of the largest mineral producers in the world. However, this economically important activity also causes significant damage to the environment. The disposal of mining waste in dams gained great repercussions after the disasters in Mariana, in 2015, and Brumadinho, in 2019, that the need to find a new use for these materials arose. The main objective of the research was to evaluate the addition of iron ore waste to materials used in the base and sub-base layers of road pavements. The results of the mechanical tests demonstrated that it is technically feasible to introduce iron ore waste into the soil-cement mixtures used in the base and sub-base layers. It was found that a minimum of 6% cement in soil-cement mixtures for the base layer, and 5% and 4% for the sub-base layer, are sufficient for the addition of waste. This indicates that waste can be an excellent alternative to reduce cement consumption. This incorporation could reduce the consumption of natural resources, offer an alternative destination for mining waste and even reduce the costs of paving works. RESUMO O Brasil se destaca como um dos maiores produtores de minérios do mundo. No entanto, essa atividade tão importante economicamente também acarreta danos significativos ao meio ambiente. O problema da disposição dos rejeitos de mineração em barragens ganhou grande repercussão após os desastres em Mariana, em 2015, e Brumadinho, em 2019, que evidenciou a necessidade de encontrar um novo uso para esses materiais. A pesquisa teve como principal objetivo avaliar a adição de rejeitos de minério de ferro em materiais utilizados nas camadas de pavimentos rodoviários, na produção de solo-cimento. Os resultados dos ensaios mecânicos mostraram que é tecnicamente viável adicionar rejeito de minério de ferro nas misturas de solo-cimento, sendo que, para camada de base, foi encontrado o teor mínimo de 6% de cimento, e de 5% e 4% para a camada de sub-base. Isso indica que o rejeito pode ser uma excelente alternativa para reduzir o consumo de cimento. Abstract The main objective of this study was to optimize the fermentation process using Serratia sp. BR13816, a bacterial isolate from Amazonian soil, and to evaluate the formation of nanoemulsions. Submerged fermentation was carried out with different carbon and nitrogen sources. Based on the emulsification index and surface tension results, we selected a hydrophobic (corn oil) and a hydrophilic (glycerol) carbon source, and a nitrogen one (urea). For fermentation using corn oil/urea greater emulsification indexes and lower surface tensions were verified at pH 8, 25 °C, and 48 h, whereas for glycerol/urea-supplemented medium the best conditions were attained at pH 7, 30 °C, and 96 h. These pre-selected factors (pH, temperature, and time) were used in a central composite rotatable design (CCRD) for an additional fermentation optimization of the two carbon/nitrogen mediums, corn oil/urea and glycerol/urea. The two best nutritional systems based on corn oil/urea and glycerol/urea were selected using a central composite rotatable design (CCRD). The mathematical models using the response surface methodology showed adequate adjustment. The best run of the experimental design for corn oil/urea (6.00% /0.60%) and glycerol/urea (3.00% /1.40%) systems presented surface tension values of 35.70 mN/m and 37.10 mN/m, respectively. Abstract The occurrence of fires can lead to accidents with high potential, and vertical fire compartmentation is a measure to reduce these incidents. Increasingly, computational numerical analyses play a crucial role in studying fire behavior for control and mitigation. The computational tool Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) is one of the main programs aimed at numerically analyzing fire spread. By using the FDS program, this research aims to numerically analyze the effectiveness of using horizontal projection and the combination of horizontal and vertical projections simultaneously, as specified in the Technical Instruction of the Fire Department of the State of São Paulo in combating the propagation of external vertical fire to the facade. ABSTRACT Zinc is an essential micronutrient for plant metabolism and has been studied in several crops of economic interest. However, there is no evidence of its use in coconut crops. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of foliar zinc fertilization with doses of zinc on dwarf green coconut seedlings based on their nutritional status, growth attributes, and gas exchange. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, and the treatments consisted of different zinc doses (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 g per plant) with five replicates. Seedlings were positively influenced by zinc dose, mainly in terms of growth variables and gas exchange. Zinc fertilization reduced iron and manganese content and increased zinc concentrations in the leaf tissue. Zinc fertilization promoted an increase in leaf area, height, shoot dry mass, and total dry mass. RESUMO O zinco é um micronutriente de importância essencial para o metabolismo vegetal, é estudado para diversas culturas de interesse econômico, porém sem evidências de estudo para a cultura do coqueiro. Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a influência da fertilização com doses de zinco via foliar em mudas de coqueiro anão verde, por meio do estado nutricional, atributos de crescimento e trocas gasosas. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, e os tratamentos foram constituídos por doses de zinco (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 e 25 g por planta), com cinco repetições. As mudas foram influenciadas positivamente pelas doses de zinco principalmente nas variáveis de crescimento e nas trocas gasosas. ABSTRACT Brazil is the seventh largest producer of mangoes in the world, and the São Francisco Valley is the main producing region, with ‘Kent’ as one of the main cultivars. Considering that irrigation management affects physiological events, production and fruit quality, the objective of this work was to evaluate the gas exchange in the leaves and fruit quality of ‘Kent’ mango subjected to controlled water deficit in the semi-arid region. The experiment was carried out in Petrolina-PE, semi-arid region of the São Francisco Valley. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, in a triple factorial scheme, with four irrigation depths (40, 60, 80 and 100% of crop evapotranspiration - ETc), three phenological stages (F1 - flowering, F2 - fruit growth, F3 - fruit maturation) and two production cycles (2018 and 2019), with four replicates. During the phenological stages, the physiological parameters of gas exchange were evaluated. After harvesting, the following parameters were evaluated: soluble solids content, titratable acidity, pH, firmness and peel color. Irrigation with a depth between 79.5 and 83.6% ETc during the evaluated stages promoted greater gas exchange in the leaves, greater firmness and acidity in the fruits. The reduction in irrigation depth in F1 and F3 reduced the soluble solids content, while in F2 the highest soluble solids content was obtained with irrigation between 68.24 and 74.5% ETc. RESUMO O Brasil é o sétimo maior produtor de mangas do mundo e o Vale do São Francisco é a principal região produtora, tendo a ‘Kent’ como uma das principais cultivares. Considerando que o manejo da irrigação afeta a fisiologia, a produção e a qualidade dos frutos, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as trocas gasosas nas folhas e a qualidade dos frutos da mangueira ‘Kent’ submetida a déficit hídrico controlado no Semiárido. ABSTRACT Oil palm production is strategic in the Amazon with high productive potential, but information on its fertilization is still relatively scarce for the region. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of phosphorus, potassium and magnesium fertilizations on oil palm production in different years in the state of Pará, Brazil. The study was conducted in Tailândia, Northeastern of Pará, Eastern Amazon, Brazil. A randomized block design was used in a 4 x 2 x 3 x 2 factorial scheme, with four levels of phosphorus, two sources of phosphorus, three levels of potassium and two levels of magnesium. Oil palm production responded positively to the increase in phosphorus levels, and until the eighth year of age of the plants, there was greater production when triple superphosphate was applied. From the ninth year onwards, fertilization with phosphine provided a production equal to the supply of phosphorus with triple superphosphate. The application of potassium chloride increased the number, weight and production of the bunches from the sixth year. The supply of magnesium sulfate increased the average weight of the bunches. RESUMEN Objetivo Analizar las características clínicas, sociodemográficas y supervivencia de individuos con síndrome respiratoria aguda grave por COVID-19, según el esquema de vacunación contra COVID-19, Brasil, 2021-2022. Métodos Estudio de cohorte con datos del Sistema de Informação de Vigilância Epidemiológica de la Gripe; se utilizó el método de Kaplan-Meier y el árbol de supervivencia para analizar la supervivencia. Resultados Entre los 559.866 casos hospitalizados, se observó una mayor proporción de vacunados entre el sexo femenino (15,0%), ancianos ≥ 80 (34,5%), región Sudeste (15,7%), quienes no recibieron soporte ventilatorio (21,2%) y no fallecidos (15,2%); la curva de supervivencia mostró que los no inmunizados presentaron un mayor riesgo de óbito en todos los grupos de edad (p-valor < 0,001); los ancianos ≥ 80, que no recibieron ventilación mecánica, con dosis de refuerzo, tienen un menor riesgo en comparación con sus pares con dos dosis o no vacunados (HR = 0,64; IC95% 0,62;0,67). Conclusión El menor riesgo de óbito se observó en individuos vacunados, especialmente aquellos con dos dosis o refuerzo.

ABSTRACT Objective To analyze the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics and survival of individuals with severe acute respiratory syndrome due to COVID-19 according to the COVID-19 vaccination schedule, Brazil, 2021-2022. Methods This was a cohort study based on data from the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System; the Kaplan-Meier and Survival Tree methods were used to analyze survival. Results Among the 559,866 hospitalized cases, a higher proportion of vaccinated individuals was found among female (15.0%), elderly people aged ≥ 80 (34.5%), people from the Southeast region (15.7%), those who did not undergo respiratory support (21.2%) and those who did progress to death (15.2%); the survival curve showed that risk of death for unvaccinated individuals was higher in all age groups (p-value < 0.001); elderly people aged ≥ 80, who did not undergo mechanical ventilation and who had a booster dose had lower risk when compared to their peers who had two doses or were unvaccinated (hazard ratio = 0.64; 95%CI 0.62;0.67). Conclusion Lowest risk of death was found in vaccinated individuals, especially those who had two doses or a booster dose as well.

Métodos Estudo de coorte, com dados do Sistema de Informação de Vigilância Epidemiológica da Gripe; métodos de Kaplan-Meier e árvore de sobrevivência foram utilizados para analisar a sobrevida. Resultados Dos 559.866 casos internados, observou-se maior proporção de vacinados entre sexo feminino (15,0%), idosos ≥ 80 anos (34,5%), na região Sudeste (15,7%), entre os que não receberam suporte ventilatório (21,2%) e os não evoluídos a óbito (15,2%); na curva de sobrevida, não imunizados apresentaram maior risco de óbito, independentemente da faixa etária (p-valor < 0,001); idosos que não realizaram ventilação mecânica, com dose de reforço, apresentaram menor risco, comparados a seus pares com duas doses ou não imunizados (hazard ratio = 0,64; IC95% 0,62;0,67). ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The incidence of esophageal cancer is high in some regions and the surgical treatment requires reference centers, with high volume, to make surgery feasible. AIMS: To evaluate patients undergoing minimally invasive esophagectomy by thoracoscopy in prone position for the treatment of esophageal cancer and to recognize the experience acquired over time in our service after the introduction of this technique. METHODS: From January 2012 to August 2021, all patients who underwent the minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal cancer were retrospectively analyzed. In order to assess the factors associated with the predefined outcomes as fistula, pneumonia, and intrahospital death, we performed univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, accounting for age as an important factor. RESULTS: Sixty-six patients were studied, with mean age of 59.5 years. The main histological type was squamous cell carcinoma (81.8%). The incidence of postoperative pneumonia and fistula was 38% and 33.3%, respectively. Eight patients died during this period. The patient's age, T and N stages, the year the procedure was performed, and postoperative pneumonia development were factors that influenced postoperative death. There was a 24% reduction in the chance of mortality each year, associated with the learning curve of our service. CONCLUSIONS: The present study presented the importance of the team's experience and the concentration of the treatment of patients with esophageal cancer in reference centers, allowing to significantly improve the postoperative outcomes. RESUMO RACIONAL: A incidência do câncer de esôfago é elevada em algumas regiões e o tratamento cirúrgico requer centros de referência com alto volume para viabilizar a cirurgia. OBJETIVOS: Avaliar os pacientes submetidos à esofagectomia minimamente invasiva, por toracoscopia na posição prona, para o tratamento do câncer de esôfago e conhecer a experiência adquirida ao longo do tempo em nosso serviço após a introdução desta técnica. MÉTODOS: De janeiro de 2012 a agosto de 2021, foram analisados retrospectivamente todos os pacientes submetidos à esofagectomia minimamente invasiva para câncer de esôfago. Para avaliar os fatores associados aos desfechos predefinidos de fístula, pneumonia e óbito intra-hospitalar, realizamos análises de regressão logística univariada e multivariada considerando a idade como fator importante. RESULTADOS: Foram estudados 66 pacientes, com idade média de 59,5 anos. O tipo histológico mais frequente foi carcinoma espinocelular (81,8%). A incidência de pneumonia pós-operatória e fístula foi de 38% e 33,3%, respectivamente. Oito pacientes morreram durante este período. ABSTRACT Synthetic streamflow scenario generation is particularly important in countries like Brazil, where hydroelectric power generation plays a key role and properly handling the uncertainty of future streamflow is crucial. This paper showcases a collaborative effort within the Brazilian electrical sector to enhance streamflow scenario models, focusing on horizons up to one year. Five institutions proposed diverse methodologies, and their effectiveness was evaluated using a comparative framework. The results reveal the strengths and areas for improvement in each model. GHCen emerged as the top performer, excelling in both short-term and moving average analyses, while the PARX model demonstrated superior performance in specific regions. RESUMO A geração de cenários sintéticos de vazões afluentes é particularmente importante em países como o Brasil, onde a geração de energia hidrelétrica desempenha um papel fundamental e é crucial lidar adequadamente com a incerteza da vazão futura. Este artigo apresenta um esforço colaborativo do setor elétrico brasileiro para aprimorar os modelos de geração de cenários de vazão, com foco em horizontes de até um ano. Cinco instituições propuseram metodologias diversas e a sua eficácia foi avaliada através de uma avaliação comparativa estruturada. Os resultados revelam os pontos fortes e as áreas de possíveis aprimoramentos em cada modelo. O modelo GHCen apresentou o melhor desempenho, destacando-se nas análises de curto prazo e de média móvel, enquanto o modelo PARX demonstrou desempenho superior em regiões específicas do Brasil. ABSTRACT Insects are fundamental to biodiversity conservation in almost all ecosystems, and their population decline, and extinction directly result from environmental impacts. These facts are aggravated by the lack of knowledge of insect biodiversity, the so-called biodiversity deficits, especially the Linnean and Wallacean shortfalls. In freshwater ecosystems, biodiversity loss is higher among aquatic insects, and caddisflies comprise one of the most vulnerable orders. In this way, research focusing on describing new caddisfly species and understanding their distribution ranges will increase knowledge of caddisfly biodiversity. In the past 14 years, the team from the Laboratório de Entomologia Aquática “Prof. Dr. Claudio Gilberto Froehlich” (LEAq, Universidade Federal da Bahia, Brazil) and collaborators have been addressing these issues, resulting in 55 described species of caddisflies. Taxa in other insect orders have also received attention and an additional 16 species have been described (eight mayflies, four stoneflies, four neuropteran spongillaflies, and antlions). Here, eight caddisfly species are described and illustrated (Atopsyche froehlichi sp. nov., Austrotinodes zeferina sp. nov., Cernotina kariri sp. nov., Neoathripsodes froehlichi sp. nov., Notalina claudiofroehlichi sp. nov., Oecetis marcus sp. nov., Phylloicus froehlichi sp. nov., and Polycentropus claudioi sp. nov.), five of them in honor of LEAq’s patron. ABSTRACT Background: This cross-sectional study compared the general impact of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and patient satisfaction with treatment and health services as perceived by those undergoing different therapeutic regimens in an endemic region in South-Eastern Brazil. We also investigated the factors associated with both outcomes (general impact and satisfaction). Methods: We included 84 patients with CL treated between 2018 and 2019 with intravenous meglumine antimoniate, liposomal amphotericin B, or intralesional meglumine antimoniate therapy. Data were collected through interviews that assessed sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidity status, access and use of health services for CL diagnosis and treatment, and the items of the Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Impact Questionnaire (CLIQ). The CLIQ is a psychometric questionnaire previously validated to assess the general impact of CL on patient satisfaction with treatment and health services. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with high CL impact and low patient satisfaction. Results: The general impact of CL and patient satisfaction with treatment and health services were not significantly associated with the therapeutic regimen. High CL impact was associated with low family income (odds ratio [OR]:3.3; 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.0-10.3), occurrence of complications/adverse effects during treatment (OR:7.7; 95%CI:2.4-25.6), and additional costs during diagnosis and/or treatment (OR:12.1; 95% CI:2.8-52.4). Low satisfaction was associated with high disease impact (OR: 9.5; 95% CI:2.7-33.9), occurrence of complications/adverse effects (OR:4.2; 95% CI:1.3-13.0), and high family income (OR:7.1; 95%CI:1.7-28.2).
