ABSTRACT Fishing and agriculture require a high energy expenditure that influences lifestyles of populations that practice these activities. The goal of the paper is to compare eating habits, nutritional status and physical activity of 19 farmers and 14 occasionally fishermen of the municipality Yaguajay, Cuba. Questionnaires of frequency of weekly foods consumption were applied. The nutritional status was evaluated. The physical activity was determined using questionnaire IPAQ short version in a subsample that were measured again five months later in order to evaluate nutritional status. In both groups diet was characterized by high consumption of rice, beans and “viandas”. The fishermen had more consumption of fish and vegetables. In the second mensuration, fishermen increased in approximately one unit their percentage of body fat, while farmers lost 1 kg of weight approximately. 60% of fishermen were classified with a category of high physical activity and 40 % with medium, and for farmers the frequencies are of 88, 9% and 11, 1% respectively. It’s concluded that farmers do physical activity daily; while the selected fishermen fish occasionally also they had a healthier diet but they are more obese than farmers.

RESUMEN La pesca y la agricultura requieren de un gasto de energía elevado, lo cual influye en los estilos de vida de las poblaciones que practican estas actividades. El objetivo del trabajo es comparar composición de la dieta, estado nutricional y actividad física de 19 campesinos y 14 pescadores ocasionales del municipio Yaguajay, Cuba. La frecuencia de consumo semanal de alimentos se obtuvo mediante un cuestionario. Se evaluó el estado nutricional y la actividad física con el cuestionario IPAQ, este último se aplicó a una submuestra, a la cual se le monitoreó su estado nutricional cinco meses después de la evaluación inicial. La dieta de ambos grupos se caracterizó por alto consumo de arroz, frijoles y viandas. El consumo de pescados y vegetales fue mayor en los pescadores. En la segunda medición, los pescadores aumentaron aproximadamente una unidad su porcentaje de grasa corporal, mientras que los campesinos perdieron aproximadamente 1 kg de peso. El 60% de los pescadores realizó actividad física alta y el 40 % media, para los campesinos los valores fueron 88, 9 % y 11,1% respectivamente. Los campesinos practicaban actividad física diaria, mientras que los pescadores pescaban ocasionalmente. A su vez, los pescadores tuvieron una dieta más saludable, aunque fue más frecuente en ellos la obesidad.

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION Iron deficiency is the main cause of anemia, but infections, inflammation and other factors also play a role. Anemia in women of childbearing age is a risk for pregnancy, childbirth and childhood development during the first two years of life. In Cuba, per WHO definition, anemia is a moderate public health problem in the third trimester of pregnancy and in preschoolers, with a prevalence of 21.6%, in both cases. OBJECTIVE Estimate prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency in women of childbearing age and assess its relation to inflammation, overweight, central adiposity, H. pylori infection and ingestion of iron-rich foods and enhancers of iron absorption. METHODS A cross-sectional, analytical study was performed in 391 women aged 18–40 years in four municipalities of Havana, Cuba, from February through June 2014. Variables (indicators in parentheses) were anemia (hemoglobin), iron deficiency (ferritin), nutritional status (body mass index and waist circumference), inflammation (C-reactive protein, acid alpha 1-glycoprotein and interleukin 6), H. pylori infection and ingestion of iron-rich foods. SPSS 20.0 and Epi Info 7.1.2.0 were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS Anemia prevalence was 24.6% (96/391); iron deficiency, 68% (266/391); H. pylori infection, 47.1% (184/391); inflammation detected by C-reactive protein, 8.4 % (33/391) and by alpha-1-gly-coprotein, 19.9% (78/391). Limited results are included for interleukin 6, which was determined in fewer cases (96). Excess body weight was found in 38.7% (150/388) and increased central adiposity in 26.7% (101/378). Iron deficiency was the main cause of anemia (OR 2.68). Central adiposity, excess body weight, and iron deficiency were positively associated with inflammation (OR of 1.77, 1.23 and 1.72, respectively), whereas H. pylori infection was negatively associated with iron deficiency and anemia (OR 0.75 and 0.94, respectively). Low consumption of meat (OR 1.17) and vegetables (OR 1.36) showed discrete limited positive associations with iron deficiency, as well as low consumption of eggs (OR 1.69) and vegetables (OR 1.56) with anemia. CONCLUSIONS Anemia is a moderate public health problem in the studied group, but with iron deficiency present in two thirds of the population and associated with anemia. Risk factors for anemia and iron deficiency, such as menorrhagia and bacterial or viral infections, should be assessed in women of childbearing age, to support interventions needed to reduce risks in pregnancy and childbirth.

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of the Sustainable Elimination of Iodine Deficiency Program through determination of urinary iodine and goiter prevalence. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Cuban school children aged 6 to 11 years old in 2011-2012. A stratified multistage sample was used in which the levels of iodine excretion in urine (urinary iodine) and the presence of goiter were determined. Results. The median urinary iodine was 176.3 µg/L; 7.6% of the students showed some deficiency of iodine, only 2.2% were below 50 µg/L (severe deficiency), and 15.3% had urinary iodine above 300 µg/L. The percentage of school children with optimal iodine nutrition was 43.5%, this category showed a significantly higher frequency (p=0.03) in the mountain areas (52.5%). Goiter prevalence was 17.6% which corresponds to a mild endemic. However, in the mountain area the prevalence was 32.6% (severe endemic). Conclusions. The comprehensive analysis of the impact of iodine deficiency control measures assessed by urinary iodine excretion and goiter prevalence reflects that it is no longer a population health problem in urban and rural areas of Cuba, attributable to a proper process of salt iodization. Nevertheless, high goiter prevalence is still observed in the mountain area of Cuba

Objetivos: Evaluar la efectividad del “Programa de Eliminación Sostenible de Deficiencia de Yodo” mediante determinación de yoduria y prevalencia de bocio. Materiales y métodos. Se realizó un estudio transversal en el cual se incluyó a la población escolar cubana de 6 a 11 años que cursaba estudios en el periodo 2011-2012. Se empleó un muestreo estratificado polietápico. En el cual se determinaron los niveles de excreción de yodo en la orina (yoduria) y la presencia de bocio. Resultados. La mediana de yoduria fue de 176,3 µg/L; el 7,6% de los escolares presentaron alguna deficiencia de yodo, solo el 2,2% estaba por debajo de 50 µg/L (deficiencia severa) y el 15,3% tenía yodurias por encima de 300 µg/L. El porcentaje de escolares con nutrición óptima de yodo fue de 43,5%, esta categoría presentó una frecuencia significativamente mayor ( p=0,03) en el estrato montaña (52,5%). La prevalencia de bocio encontrada fue de 17,6%, que corresponde a una endemia ligera. Sin embargo, en el estrato montaña se encontró una prevalencia de 32,6 % (endemia severa). Conclusiones. El análisis integral del impacto de las acciones de control de la deficiencia de yodo evaluado a través de la excreción urinaria de yodo y la prevalencia de bocio refleja que ha dejado de ser un problema de salud poblacional en los estratos urbano y rural de Cuba, atribuible a un adecuado proceso de yodación de la sal. Sin embargo, aún se observa una alta prevalencia de bocio en la zona de montaña de Cuba
