Despite the repeated demonstrations and instructions about the value of indigenous languages and the importance of education in mother tongue, whether in official documents of the Brazilian government, whether in articles, statements and proposals signed by indigenous teachers or non-indigenous researchers, the fact is that in the most educational programs in indigenous communities in Brazil the space for the native language is very similar to that usually found for a foreign language in the national school. As indigenous teachers often prove to have belief in the need to value and strengthen their own languages, and are - themselves - native speakers of that, the questions that arise are: Why reasons indigenous schools continue to restrict the space of the native language? Is it possible that Indian teachers are indeed believers in the potential and future of their mother tongue? And finally, will the pressures of bureaucracy, or pressures from non-indigenous teachers in the indigenous schools, which prevents the practice of programs authentically bilingual?.

A pesar de las reiteradas manifestaciones y instrucciones al respecto del valor de las lenguas indígenas y sobre la importancia de la enseñanza en lengua materna, sea en documentos oficiales del gobierno brasileño, sea en artículos, declaraciones y propuestas firmadas por maestros indígenas o por pesquisadores no indígenas, el hecho es que en la mayor parte de los programas educacionales en comunidades indígenas de Brasil el espacio destinado a la lengua autóctona es muy semejante a lo que acostumbramos encontrar para una lengua extranjera en la escuela nacional. Como a menudo los maestros indígenas demuestran tener convicción en la necesidad de valorizar y fortalecer sus lenguas propias, y son - ellos mismos - hablantes nativos de sus lenguas, las preguntas que se plantean son: ¿Por cuales razones las escuelas indígenas siguen restringiendo el espacio de la lengua autóctona? ¿Es posible que los maestros indígenas de hecho estén creyentes de las potencialidades y en el futuro de su lengua materna? Y, por fin, ¿Serán las presiones de la burocracia o de maestros no-indígenas en la escuela indígena lo que impide la experimentación de programas auténticamente bilingües?.

A fonologia da vertente do Círculo de Praga - seguida por Câmara Jr. - não deixou seguidores entre lingüistas no Brasil, onde assistimos à vitória hegemônica da vertente estruturalista distribucionalista norte-americana. Com suas limitações teóricas e seu empirismo exacerbado, essa perspectiva engessou o tratamento da fonologia do Português Brasileiro e provocou o abandono das intuições mais perspicazes da abordagem do próprio Mattoso. Ela também comprometeu o tratamento da fonologia de grande parte das línguas autóctones brasileiras, ao mesmo tempo em que foi responsável pela formação de gerações de lingüistas em nosso país. Sua vitória não correspondeu apenas a um embate acadêmico, mas integrou um processo latino-americano de alinhamento pró-Estados Unidos que, na Fonologia, ainda mostra uma sobrevida.

Phonology of the Prague Scholl - followed by Câmara Jr - did not leave followers between Brazilian linguists, since in this country we watched the hegemonic victory of the distributionalist Structuralism of North America. With its theoretical limitations and its exasperate empiricism, this perspective confined the treatment of the Brazilian Portuguese's Phonology and led to the abandonment of the most interesting intuitions of Mattoso's approach. It also impaired the treatment of the phonological component of great part of the native languages in Brazil, and at the same time, it was responsible for the formation of generations of linguists in our country. Its victory did not correspond only to an academic dispute, but it integrated a Latin American process of alignment with the United States, which, in Phonology, still survives.

O presente artigo propõe uma revisão do 'consenso' em torno da fonologia da língua portuguesa, consenso esse que, partindo de uma leitura simplificadora da clássica análise de Mattoso Câmara Jr, permanece na base das abordagens da fonologia dessa língua que aparecem tanto em manuais como em obras especializadas, mesmo aquelas de corte não-linear ou otimalista. Este artigo busca verificar a possibilidade de aplicação de uma abordagem autossegmental com apoio em uma representação por geometria de traços em uma configuração bastante específica, desenvolvida pelo autor (D'Angelis 1998) a partir de intuições e propostas de Piggott (1992) e Rice (1993) para tratar processos envolvendo nasalidade e soanticidade em línguas indígenas brasileiras. Ao mesmo tempo, o texto recupera intuições de Trubetzkoy, da Fonologia de Praga, inspiradora daquela análise inaugural de Câmara Jr.

Problems identified in the study and analysis of the phonology of Brazilian Indian languages belonging to the Macro-Jê branch such as Kaingang, Maxakali, and Mebengokre led the author to confirm the accuracy of some intuitions on the part of Piggott (1992) and Rice (1993) on dealing with relations between nasality and sonorancy (D'Angelis 1998). The applicability of the approach to the distinct processes of nasality and nasalization in Portuguese was verified with surprising results that recover some intuitions of Trubetzkoy (1939) and contribute to reconfirm the Mattoso Câmara's (1953; 1970) considerations, but at the same time go beyond them. This article presents the result of this investigation and its conclusions that suggest the validity and the necessity of reexamining even the "phonemic inventory" of the Portuguese language, an issue not at all questioned in the teaching of phonology, to take into account the linguistic changes in the phonological system of that language in the last fifty years.

Este texto, escrito em 1995, busca colocar em questão certas compreensões quase ingênuas do que seja fazer (ou tornar) uma escola indígena. Por isso é ainda atual, quando a discussão dos currículos das escolas está em pauta. O texto aponta o desafio de se conquistar uma "escola indígena" e sugere que a educação escolar indígena faria muito (e melhor) se fosse capaz de apenas duas coisas: um bom ensino de matemática e a formação efetiva de leitores.

This text, written in 1995, tries to bring to issue certain comprehension almost naive about what is making (or turning) a school, indigenous. That's why it's still up-to-date, when the schools are discussing the curriculum. The text shows the challenge to conquest an indigenous school" and suggests that indigenous school education would do much (and better) if it were able of only two things: a good Mathematics teaching and the effective formation of readers.
