Summary: Agave salmiana L., is a plant with high agroecological, agro-industrial and gastronomic value, however, its traditional propagation by suckers reduces the genetic variability of this species. The objective of this research was to evaluate the accumulation of dry matter, total chlorophyll and some nitrogenous compounds as response to the foliar application of chitosan in A. salmiana seedlings. The study was conducted at the Instituto Tecnológico Superior of Huichapan, Hidalgo, Mexico. The experimental design was completely random with 10 replications. Five foliar doses of chitosan (mg L-1) were evaluated (0.10, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.0), where T0 corresponds to the control (distilled water). The parameters evaluated were plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, root length and volume, dry matter, total chlorophyll, and total nitrogen and nitrates. Foliar application of 0.75 and 1.0 g L-1 increased plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, length and root volume. However, the dose of 0.5 g L-1 also showed significant effect on plant height and stem diameter. On the other hand, treatments with 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 mg L-1 showed the highest values of total chlorophyll and total nitrogen and nitrates, where dry matter accumulation was only significant with the dose of 1.0 mg L-1. The foliar application of chitosan is an alternative that could help improve some of the morphophysiological characteristics in seedlings of A. salmiana, a species endemic to Mexico.

ABSTRACT: Biofortification of food crops is implemented through the application of mineral fertilizers, to improve the levels of essential mineral elements for human nutrition. Magnesium is a key macronutrient in crop production and quality; however, worldwide, it is the most limiting macronutrient in agriculture. Magnesium plays an important role in manipulating physiological and biochemical processes in plants. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of biofortification with magnesium chloride and sulfate on the accumulation of bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity in snap bean cv. Strike. Two sources of Magnesium were applied via edaphic route: Magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate at doses of 0, 50, 100 and 200 ppm during 2018 in Mexico. Accumulation of bioactive compounds (total phenols, total flavonoids and total anthocyanins) and antioxidant capacity in snap bean fruits were evaluated. Results obtained indicate that the concentration of total flavonoids, total anthocyanins and antioxidant capacity in the edible parts of snap beans were higher in the MgSO4 treatment than in the MgCl2 treatments, exceeding 30, 59 and 6% respectively. This is one of the first studies on the edaphic agronomic biofortification of Mg+ and its effect on nutraceutical quality in snap bean. An interesting result is that MgSO4 produced high concentrations of anthocyanins in edible snap beans. These results can be applied as a new strategy to reduce malnutrition and improve the health of the population in poor urban and rural communities in developing countries.

RESUMO Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch.
ABSTRACT Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch. is a deciduous fruit species with high economic impact and nutritional value that exhibits alternate bearing behavior. In this study, the concentration of foliar nutrients, non-structural carbohydrates and yield were evaluated in cultivar Western Schley pecan in response to the foliar application of gibberellic acid (50 mg L-1 GA3), prohexadione calcium (500 mg L-1 PCa) and thidiazuron (10 mg L-1 TDZ).The statistical analysis reveals that between agricultural cycles, the treatments showed no variation in the foliar concentration of nitrogen total (N-total), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and non-structural carbohydrates (fructose, glucose, sucrose and starch). However, the application of PCa showed no significant effect on the concentration of phosphorus (P) (1.5 and 1.9 g kg-1). On the other hand, the concentration of zinc (Zn) (27.0-60.1 mg kg-1) showed a significant difference between years, with no effect due to the application of growth bioregulators. The trees treated with GA3 minimized alternate bearing by presenting similar values (12.4 and 15.3 kg tree-1) of yield. Likewise, the applied treatments did not affect the nut weight per kilogram (kg) (5.5-6.8 g) and kernel percentage (56.5-60.8). These data provide a new perspective on the complex nature of alternate bearing production in cultivar Western Schley pecan and are interpreted to indicate that alternate production could be regulated by carbohydrate reserve, nutrient concentration, and gibberellins.

Abstract Several studies indicate that nitrogen fertilization is one of the main constraints in obtaining higher yields and better nut quality in pecan (Carya illinoensis [Wangenh] K. Koch). Therefore, the aim of this research was to evaluate a single and split application of nitrogen in 'Western Schley' variety pecan, as well as its effect on leaf nutrient concentration, yield and nut quality. A randomized complete block design with six replicates was established. N doses were 100, 150 and 200 kg·ha-1; the single application was made in March and the split one in March and June. The leaf concentration of total N, P, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Mn2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+, yield (kg·tree-1), quality (nuts per kilogram and kernel percentage) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) were determined. Significant interaction between factors was detected for the Zn2+ concentration and the single applied dose of 200 kg·ha-1. With the single application of 100 kg·ha-1, the highest yield (44.60 kg·tree-1) and nuts per kilogram (194.83) values were recorded, where the kernel percentage remained constant. The maximum NUE was obtained with 100 kg·ha-1 applied in a single and split application (31.10 and 30.10 kg of nuts produced per kg of N applied, respectively). Increased yield and nut quality is the main objective in applying optimal N doses; however, ways of reducing the economic and environmental impact caused by its excessive application should also be sought.

ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to evaluate the yield and physicochemical quality of the fruit in seven experimental lines of cherry tomato in response to three levels (2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 dS m-1) of electrical conductivity (EC) of Steiner's nutrient solution. The experimental design was completely randomized with six replicates. Yield, number of fruits per cluster (NFPC), average fruit weight (AFW), color, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), vitamin C (VC), total phenols (TF), lycopene (Ly) and antioxidant capacity (AC) were evaluated. EC levels of 2.5 and 3.0 dS m-1 showed statistically the highest values of firmness (1.23 and 1.14 N mm-1), TSS (7.04 and 7.08 °Brix), TA (0.49 and 0.50% citric acid), VC (13.91 and 8.91 mg 100 g-1), Ly (9.17 and 10.75 mg 100 g-1) and AC (45.96 and 52.21 mm TEAC g-1). Among genotypes, H13-39 recorded the highest yield and AFW, with values of 9.47 kg m-2 and 38.35 g, respectively. Additionally, L-ChNg1 and L-ChNg2 presented the fruit with the highest firmness, while H13-26 had those with the highest TA and VC. With the exception of H13-39, L-ChNg1 and L-ChNg2, the rest of the genotypes were characterized by a high AC (55.53-60.60 mm TEAC g-1). However, H13-39 and L-ChNg1 had the highest Ly content. The modification of the EC of Steiner's nutrient solution kept the evaluated yield components unchanged, but it affected the physicochemical quality of the fruit among genotypes. This allowed identifying outstanding experimental lines with potential for commercial use.

Abstract Nephelium lappaceum L. is a highly perishable tropical fruit because of its susceptibility to pericarp dehydration and oxidation, which decreases its acceptance in the fresh produce market. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of agronomic practices such as pruning, girdling and water stress on some postharvest quality parameters in rambutan fruits from 'RJA Clone' trees in Chiapas, Mexico. A split-plot experimental design in randomized complete blocks with a factorial arrangement and six replicates was used. Fruits from trees managed under water stress conditions showed greater fresh weight (40.2 g), concentration of total soluble solids (TSS, 22.62 °Brix), total sugars (423 mg∙100 g-1), vitamin C (37.79 mg∙100 g-1) and titratable acidity (0.30 %). On the other hand, it was found that water stress caused a 33 % weight loss in fruits, in relation to fruits from irrigated trees (48 %). The latter were characterized by having less sweetness (between 18 and 19 °Brix) and higher acidity (0.417 %). In general, the application of temporal drought, girdling and pruning contributed to the obtaining of fruits with greater size, shelf life and sweetness, less weight loss and with a higher concentration of bioactive compounds (vitamin C and total phenols), in addition to acquiring physical and biochemical characteristics desirable for fresh consumption.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of three levels of electrical conductivity (2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 dS m-1) of Steiner's nutrient solution on the yield, physicochemical quality, and antioxidant capacity of fruits from seven tomato genotypes and wild types of tomato (kidney selections). The yield, number of fruits per cluster (NFPC), average fresh fruit weight (AFWF), color, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), total titratable acidity (TTA), vitamin C (VC), total phenols (TP), lycopene (LY) and antioxidant capacity (AC). The use of 2.5 and 3.0 dS m-1 increased the hue angle (49.05°) and TTA (0.35 and 0.36% citric acid). Among genotypes, L-51H and L-76H showed better performance (16.80 and 16.91 kg m-2, respectively), where L-28 stood out for its values of TSS, TTA, VC, TP and AC. Regarding the wild genotypes, the EC modification did not increase the yield; however, the use of 3.0 dS m-1 allowed the best results among the wild selections were SS3 (yield, AFWF and LY) and SS5 (NFPC, VC, TP and AC). The modification of the EC did not affect the yield, however, if it affected the physicochemical quality and antioxidant capacity of the analyzed materials.

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to determine the content of some bioactive compounds and the antioxidant potential of xocotuna (Opuntia chiangiana) compared to that of cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) and xoconostle (Opuntia spp.). Fruits at physiological maturity were harvested in the months of June, August and October of 2013 in El Orito, Zacatecas, México. The variables evaluated were: antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content, vitamin C, betalain content, and total chlorophyll and carotene contents. Statistical differences were observed in 'Coral' xocotuna after 3, 6, 9 and 12 days of storage, reaching the highest levels of antioxidant capacity (between 0.92 and 1.04 mg VCEACN g-1). 'Cuaresmeño' recorded the highest total phenolic content with initial values of 44.61 mg GAE 100 g-1, while 'Amarilla Plátano' recorded the lowest value of 6.27 mg GAE 100 g-1. Significant differences were also found in the content of vitamin C; xoconostle cultivars showed the highest levels during the evaluated period, with values ranging between 41.80 and 125.98 mg 100 g-1. Regarding the content of betalain, and total chlorophyll and carotene contents, a high variability was found because of the characteristic color of each cultivar. The cultivars analyzed, mainly those of xoconostle and xocotuna, could be considered as an excellent source of vitamin C and antioxidants to be included in the diet or as natural ingredients to prepare other products.
