Leachate from a composting plant was characterized and applied as a biofertilizer in lettuce crops. Characteristics of untreated (UE) and anaerobically treated (TE) leachate samples were compared. The pH of TE (8.2) increased in relation to the UE (5.2) due to an increase in ammonia nitrogen in TE (1197 mg L-1) compared to UE (859 mg L-1). Anaerobic treatment was efficient in the removal of organic matter from the leachate, evaluated by the decrease of dissolved organic carbon, biochemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon and total solids. K presented the highest concentration (1743 mg L-1) in TE, followed by Mg (135 mg L-1). Cd, Pb and Cr were present at low concentrations in the samples, 0.047, 0.206 and 0.081 mg L-1, respectively. Salmonella, thermotolerant coliforms and viable helminth eggs were not present in TE, which was applied as a biofertilizer in a lettuce crop and compared to mineral fertilization based on fresh matter and dry matter production. Lettuce production using TE was statistically equivalent to mineral fertilization. Toxic metals were not detected in the lettuce shoots. It was concluded that the anaerobically treated leachate from the composting company has the potential to be used as a biofertilizer.

Abstract Objective: The present study revisited three classification systems of orbital complications of acute rhinosinusitis (ARS) (Chandler, Mortimore & Wormald, and Velasco e Cruz & Anselmo-Lima) and observed which of them presented the best clinical applicability. Methods: Clinical data and CT scan findings of patients with orbital infection were retrospectively collected. To compare the three classification systems, we revised and graded all CT images accordingly, and divided the patients into four groups: Eyelid cellulitis (EC), orbital cellulitis (OC), subperiosteal abscess (SA), and orbital abscess (OA). The groups were compared regarding the presence of sinus opacification, the need for hospitalization and/or surgical treatment, and the presence of further complications/sequelae. Results: 143 patients were included. The median number of sinuses involved in patients in the OC, SA, and OA groups was 2.0. ARS was rarely associated with signs of EC (present in both Chandler’s and Mortimore & Wormald’s classifications. The hospitalization rate was significantly lower in the EC group compared to the other three groups. Surgery was performed in all cases in the OA group, in 58.1% in the SA group, 19.4% in the OC group, and 12.5% in the EC group (p-value < 0.0001 ). Complications were present at higher rates in the OA group compared to the other three groups. Conclusions: ARS was rarely associated with Eyelid Cellulitis. The stratification in the other three groups showed to be clinically relevant. Velasco e Cruz & Anselmo-Lima's classification system proved valid, simple, and effective for categorizing orbital complications of ARS. Level of evidence: 3.

SUMMARY Forest inventory is the primary method for collecting and recording information regarding the volumetric quantification and yield of trees. However, this is difficult when the individual has been cut and only the stump remains, in which case inventory is achieved through regression techniques. The objective of this work was to adjust allometric equations for the estimation of normal diameter (dn), total height (at) and volume (v) using the stump diameter (dt) for Abies religiosa in different regions of Mexico. A total of 2,599 data points from 20 forest management units were used to analyze the variables and their respective predictions through eight allometric equations, which were evaluated with different statistical criteria. The adjusted coefficient of determination (R2 adj) explained 91 % of the normal diameter, together with the root mean square error (RMSE) of less than 4.75 cm with respect to the allometric equation (3). Another of the best options to estimate the total height is the Schumacher exponential (4) and the allometric (6) with values of R2 adj of approximately 50 %, accompanied by RMSE less than 5.03 m. However, for the volume of the forest, Schumacher's equation was considered pertinent since it has a RMSE ranging from 0.00001 to 0.0026 m3 with R2 adj that explains more than 74 % of the variation of the data observed in each UMAFOR. These regressions may be useful for the restoration of trees after an unplanned or unexpected felling event, as the results are statistically reliable.

RESUMEN Los inventarios forestales son los métodos de recolección y registro de información para la cuantificación volumétrica y rendimiento de los árboles; sin embargo, esto se dificulta cuando el individuo ha sido cortado y solo permanece el tocón, y esto se logra mediante técnicas de regresión. El objetivo de este trabajo fue ajustar ecuaciones alométricas para la estimación del diámetro normal (dn), altura total (at) y volumen (v) fustal a partir del diámetro del tocón (dt) para Abies religiosa en diferentes regiones de México. Se utilizaron 2.599 datos provenientes de 20 forest management units para analizar las variables con sus respectivas predicciones a través de ocho ecuaciones alométricas; mismas que fueron evaluadas con diferentes criterios estadísticos. El coeficiente de determinación ajustado (R2 adj) explicó el 91 % sobre el diámetro normal, en conjunto con la raíz del error medio cuadrático (REMC) menores a 4,75 cm respecto a la ecuación alométrica (3), también las mejores opciones para estimar la altura total está la de Schumacher exponencial (4) y la alométrica (6) con valores de R2 adj aproximado de 50 %, acompañado de REMC menores a 5,03 m; mientras que, para el volumen fustal, se consideró pertinente la ecuación de Schumacher al tener una REMC que oscilan entre 0,00001 a 0,0026 m3 con R2 adj que explica más del 74 % la variación de los datos observados en cada UMAFOR. Estas regresiones podrán ser de utilidad para la reconstrucción de los árboles después de un evento de derribo no previsto o acontecido, al tener resultados estadísticamente confiable.

Resumo: O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a prevalência de fatores de risco cardiovascular entre diferentes grupos sociodemográficos de adolescentes de comunidades indígenas em Chiapas, México. Foi realizado um estudo transversal de prevalência em comunidades urbanas e rurais das regiões de Tzotzil-Tzeltal e Selva de Chiapas. Foi estudada uma amostra de 253 adolescentes, sendo 48% meninas e 52% meninos. Foi realizada uma análise descritiva das variáveis quantitativas por meio de medidas de tendência central e dispersão. Foram estimadas as prevalências de fatores de risco cardiovascular, estratificadas por sexo, área geográfica, escolaridade e etnia das mães. A prevalência dos fatores de risco cardiovascular foi analisada em relação às características sociodemográficas da população estudada. O HDL-c baixo (51%) foi o fator de risco cardiovascular predominante. Prevalências mais elevadas de obesidade abdominal, hipertrigliceridemia e colesterol total limítrofe foram mais observadas em meninas do que em meninos. A pressão arterial diastólica elevada prevaleceu nos meninos. Adolescentes da área urbana apresentaram prevalências de sobrepeso/obesidade e resistência à insulina maiores do que os da área rural. A prevalência de sobrepeso/obesidade e obesidade abdominal foi maior nos adolescentes cujas mães possuíam escolaridade ≥ 7 anos do que naqueles indivíduos cujas mães tinham baixa escolaridade. As diferenças de etnia das mães também foram observadas na prevalência de resistência à insulina. Dentre as principais conclusões, foram encontradas, neste estudo, desigualdades sociodemográficas e geográficas entre fatores de risco cardiovascular. Promover estilos de vida saudáveis entre a população jovem é o ideal para prevenir doenças cardiovasculares na vida adulta.

Abstract: This study was aimed to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors among different sociodemographic groups of adolescents from indigenous communities in Chiapas, Mexico. A cross-sectional prevalence study was performed in urban and rural communities in the Tzotzil-Tzeltal and Selva regions of Chiapas. A sample of 253 adolescents was studied, of whom 48% were girls and 52% were boys. A descriptive analysis of quantitative variables was performed using measures of central tendency and dispersion. The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors stratified by sex, geographical area, years of schooling, and ethnicity of the mothers was estimated. The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors was analyzed in relation to the sociodemographic characteristics of the study population. Low HDL-c (51%) was the predominant cardiovascular risk factor. Girls had a higher prevalence of abdominal obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, and borderline total cholesterol than boys. High diastolic blood pressure was more prevalent in boys. Adolescents from urban areas had a higher prevalence of overweight/obesity and insulin resistance than adolescents from rural areas. The prevalence of overweight/obesity and abdominal obesity was higher in adolescents whose mothers had ≥ 7 years of schooling compared with adolescents with less educated mothers. Differences by maternal ethnicity also influenced the prevalence of insulin resistance. Among the main findings, this study associated sociodemographic and geographical inequalities with cardiovascular risk factors. Promoting a healthy lifestyle for this young population is absolutely necessary to prevent cardiovascular diseases in adulthood.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of either a limited forage intake or concentrate supplementation prior to the adaptation to high-concentrate diets on dry matter intake, ruminal pH, bacteria, and protozoa of Nellore cattle. The experiment was designed as a two 3×3 Latin square, and six cannulated Nellore steers were used. Each experimental period was composed by three feeding phases: pre-adaptation (14 days), adaptation (12 days), and finishing (seven days) diet, in a total of 33 days per period. The steers were assigned to one of three pre-adaptation dietary treatments: control (Tifton hay fed ad libitum + mineral supplement), restriction (Tifton hay fed at 1.4% of BW + mineral supplement), and concentrate (Tifton hay fed ad libitum + 0.5% of BW of a mix of concentrate feedstuffs and mineral supplement). The adaptation period consisted of two adaptation diets, which contained 72 and 79% concentrate for six days each. The finishing diet contained 86% concentrate. During the pre-adaptation phase, restricted cattle had higher pH than concentrate-fed cattle. There was a reduction in M. elsdenii relative population in cattle from either restriction or concentrate groups. During adaptation and finishing phases, cattle from concentrate group had smaller F. succinogenes populations compared with the control group. The previous nutritional backgrounds impact ruminal microbiota during adaptation and finishing phases without causing any negative effect on ruminal pH. Feeding concentrate prior to the adaptation positively impacted the transition to high-concentrate diets and promoted increased dry matter intake.

Abstract This study aimed to analyze the root and root canal morphology of mandibular first and second molars using CBCT images. A total of 2,400 mandibular molars exams were selected from 600 patients aged between 18 and 75 years. The number of roots, number of root canals, and root canal configuration according to the Vertucci classification were verified. Overall, 94.92% of mandibular first molars and 90.17% of mandibular second molars had two separate roots. Among the biradicular molars, the first molars showed a greater incidence of type IV canals in the mesial root and type I in the distal root. In the second molars, the most common canal form was type IV in the mesial root and type I in the distal root. In the triradicular molars, the type IV and type I configurations were the most common in the mesial root of the first molar and second molar, respectively. In both triradicular molars, there was a prevalence of type I canal in the distal and DL roots. Statistical analysis was performed at a significance level of 0.05. The number of roots was correlated with gender (Spearman test), and the canal's configuration with gender and bilaterality (Wilcoxon test). The subpopulation studied has a high incidence of bilateral symmetry and mandibular molars with two roots with two distinct mesial canals and one distal canal. The bilateral configuration is possible to estimate the number of canals, especially in images that are difficult to visualize, such as atresic canals.

Resumo Fundamento Há evidências sugerindo que um corte do pico de consumo de oxigênio (pVO2) de 10ml/kg/min fornece uma estratificação de risco mais precisa em pacientes com Terapia de Ressincronização Cardíaca (TRC). Objetivo Comparar o poder prognóstico de vários parâmetros do teste cardiopulmonar de exercício (TCPE) nesta população e avaliar a capacidade discriminativa dos valores de corte de pVO2 recomendados pelas diretrizes. Métodos Avaliação prospectiva de uma série consecutiva de pacientes com insuficiência cardíaca (IC) com fração de ejeção do ventrículo esquerdo ≤40%. O desfecho primário foi um composto de morte cardíaca e transplante cardíaco urgente (TC) nos primeiros 24 meses de acompanhamento, e foi analisado por vários parâmetros do TCPE para a maior área sob a curva (AUC) no grupo TRC. Uma análise de sobrevida foi realizada para avaliar a estratificação de risco fornecida por vários pontos de corte diferentes. Valores de p < 0,05 foram considerados significativos. Resultados Um total de 450 pacientes com IC, dos quais 114 possuíam aparelho de TRC. Esses pacientes apresentaram um perfil de risco basal mais alto, mas não houve diferença em relação ao desfecho primário (13,2% vs 11,6%, p = 0,660). A pressão expiratória de dióxido de carbono no limiar anaeróbico (PETCO2AT) teve o maior valor de AUC, que foi significativamente maior do que o de pVO2 no grupo TRC (0,951 vs 0,778, p = 0,046). O valor de corte de pVO2 atualmente recomendado forneceu uma estratificação de risco precisa nesse cenário (p <0,001), e o valor de corte sugerido de 10 ml/min/kg não melhorou a discriminação de risco em pacientes com dispositivos (p = 0,772). Conclusão A PETCO2AT pode superar o poder prognóstico do pVO2 para eventos adversos em pacientes com TRC. O ponto de corte de pVO2 recomendado pelas diretrizes atuais pode estratificar precisamente o risco dessa população.

Abstract Background There is evidence suggesting that a peak oxygen uptake (pVO2) cut-off of 10ml/kg/min provides a more precise risk stratification in cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) patients. Objective To compare the prognostic power of several cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) parameters in this population and assess the discriminative ability of the guideline-recommended pVO2cut-off values. Methods Prospective evaluation of consecutive heart failure (HF) patients with left ventricular ejection fraction ≤40%. The primary endpoint was a composite of cardiac death and urgent heart transplantation (HT) in the first 24 follow-up months, and was analysed by several CPET parameters for the highest area under the curve (AUC) in the CRT group. A survival analysis was performed to evaluate the risk stratification provided by several different cut-offs. p values <0.05 were considered significant. Results A total of 450 HF patients, of which 114 had a CRT device. These patients had a higher baseline risk profile, but there was no difference regarding the primary outcome (13.2% vs 11.6%, p =0.660). End-tidal carbon dioxide pressure at anaerobic threshold (PETCO2AT)had the highest AUC value, which was significantly higher than that of pVO2in the CRT group (0.951 vs 0.778, p =0.046). The currently recommended pVO2cut-off provided accurate risk stratification in this setting (p <0.001), and the suggested cut-off value of 10 ml/min/kg did not improve risk discrimination in device patients (p =0.772). Conclusion PETCO2ATmay outperform pVO2’s prognostic power for adverse events in CRT patients. The current guideline-recommended pVO2 cut-off can precisely risk-stratify this population.

ABSTRACT Fungal virulence is multifaceted and dependent on multiple factors including the pH of the spore suspension. In this study, we accessed effects of six pH values of Beauveria bassiana, and Metarhizium anisopliae medium for the growth, sporulation, and mortality on sugarcane stalk borer Diatraea saccharalis. The culture of fungi was performed onplates containing the PDA (Potato Dextrose Agar) medium. Virulence was tested in D. saccharalis larvae distributed in four replicates of 15 larvae. To evaluate the performance of the isolates, they were grown at different pH values in an artificial chitin medium to confirm the degradation capacity of the fungi at each pH. No significant difference was observed for the sporulation at pH ranged from 4 to 9 for both fungi. In the mortality assay, larval mortality was higher at pH 7 and 8 for both fungi, reaching 87% for B. bassiana and 81% for M. anisopliae.

ABSTRACT Background: Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging improves the performance of prostate cancer (PCa) diagnostics through a better selection of patients. Objectives: The aim of the study was to study the detection rate (DR) of systematic and targeted cognitive biopsies in a cohort with the previous negative systematic biopsies. A secondary objective was to describe the value of prostate-specific antigen density (PSAd) in the detection of clinically significant PCa (CSPCa). Methods: We designed a prospective, single-center, and comparative study to determine the DR of systematic and targeted cognitive biopsies. The clinical and pathological characteristics of each patient were described. Results: A total of 111 patients with Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System lesions > 3 were included in the study. PCa was detected in 41.4% (46 of 111 patients); 42 (91.3%) were detected by systematic biopsy and 30 (65.2%) by targeted biopsy. CSPCa was detected in 26 (23.4%), 23 (88.5%) by systematic biopsy, and 21 (76.9%) by targeted biopsy. PSAd > 0.15 was directly associated with CSPCa. Conclusion: The detection of PCa by systematic biopsy in this series was higher than 80%; hence, its routine use should not be replaced by targeted biopsy, since it continues to be the cornerstone of the diagnosis in patients with prior negative biopsies.

RESUMO No cultivo do inhame a adubação mineral e o uso de tutoramento proporciona boa produção. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a produção e a qualidade do inhame submetidos a doses de nitrogênio e tipos de tutoramento. O trabalho foi realizado em condições de campo no delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 5 × 3, com cinco doses de nitrogênio (0, 50, 100, 150 e 200 kg ha-1) e três tipos de tutoramento (espaldeiramento, vara e sem tutor), com quatro repetições. Na adubação em cobertura foram aplicadas as doses de nitrogênio parceladas em partes iguais aos 60 e 90 dias após o plantio. Foram avaliados comprimento, massa média, teores de amido e N foliar, produtividades total e comercial de túberas. O tutoramento promoveu maior rendimento total, massa média, comprimento e teor de nitrogênio foliar, entretanto não foram observadas alterações no teor de amido entre os tipos de tutoramento. A produtividade comercial é maior com a utilização do tutor em vara. Recomenda-se o plantio do inhame com tutoramento e dose de nitrogênio de 120,70 kg ha-1 para promover a máxima produtividade.

ABSTRACT Adequate mineral fertilization and staking are necessary to obtain good productivity in yam cultivation. The objective of this study was to determine the increase in yield and quality of yams subjected to nitrogen doses and staking methods. This study was carried out under field conditions using a randomized block design in a 5 × 3 factorial scheme, with five nitrogen doses (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg ha-1) and three staking methods (wire trellises, single staking, and without staking) with four replicates. Nitrogen doses were applied in topdressing, and split into equal parts at 60 and 90 days after seed tuber planting. Tuber length and weight, starch and leaf nitrogen concentrations, and total and marketable yields were determined. Staking promoted higher total yield, mass, length, and leaf nitrogen concentration, but no changes were observed in starch concentration among the staking methods. Commercial productivity was higher with single staking. Planting yam with staking and a nitrogen dose of 120.70 kg ha-1 is recommended to promote maximum productivity.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar o efeito do uso dos óleos essenciais (OLES) de Mentha piperita e Melaleuca alternifolia em codornas de corte. Para o estudo do desempenho foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com quatrotratamentos e oito repetições, sendo sete aves por repetição. Para o estudo da lipidemia utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial: 4x2, consistindo em quatro tratamentos e duas condições de coleta, com oito repetições, sendo uma ave por repetição. As variáveis analisadas foram: ganho de peso, consumo ração, conversão alimentar, rendimento de carcaça, colesterol, HDL, triglicerídeos, pH, capacidade de retenção de água, perda de peso por cozimento, luminosidade na carne do peito de codornas. Os dados obtidos foram analisados quanto à homocedasticidade e normalidade, as médias foram submetidas à análise de variância. O uso de OLES de M. piperita e M. alternifolia na dieta de codornas de corte pode proporcionar desempenhos zootécnicos, rendimentos de carcaça e características de qualidade da carne comparáveis ao uso de antibióticos melhoradores de desempenho. A redução no nível de colesterol HDL foi notada nas aves tratadas com Bacitracina de zinco e com os OLES de M. piperita e M. alternifolia, em 8,12; 16,52 e 3,36% respectivamente. O uso da Bacitracina de zinco, da M. piperita e da M. alternifolia associado às diferentes condições de coleta não aumentaram os valores séricos de LDL, VLDL. Os coeficientes de variação aferidos na condição “após 12 horas de jejum” apresentaram-se 86% inferiores à condição “sem jejum”.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the effect of essential oil (ESOL) of Mentha piperita and Melaleuca alternifolia on meat-type quails. To examine performance, a completely randomized design was used, with four treatments and eight repetitions each, using seven birds per repetition. To assess lipidemia, a completely randomized design in a 4 × 2 factorial scheme was used, with four treatments and two collection conditions using eight repetitions and one bird per repetition. Weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion, carcass yield, cholesterol, high-density lipoporteins, triglycerides, pH, and brightness of quail breast meat were assessed. The data were analyzed for homoscedasticity and normality, and the means were subjected to analysis of variance. Adding M. piperita and M. alternifolia ESOL to the diets of meat-type quails can improve performance, carcass yield, and meat quality characteristics, comparable to the use of performance-enhancing antibiotics. The use of zinc bacitracin, M. piperita, and M. alternifolia under different collection conditions did not increase the serum levels of low-density and very low-density lipoproteins. The variation coefficients measured after 12 hours of fasting were 86% lower than without fasting.

Abstract Health professionals working to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic are one of the main risk groups for the disease, being prioritized for vaccination. Considering this, the aim of this study was to analyze the immune response of these professionals immunized with CoronaVac in the first and second doses. Blood samples were collected after the first and second doses of the vaccine (CoronaVac) and used to investigate hematological and biochemical parameters, analysis of immunoglobulin production, cytokines, and gene expression profile, as well as the identification of subsets of immune cells. Post-first dose immunological phenotypic memory (CD27+) profiles (T CD4+, TCD8+ and CD19+) showed a significant increase, as did Monocyte APCs (CD80+HLA-DR+) in relation to the second dose. The cytokines IL-2, IL-6 and IFN-° showed increased values in relation to the other analyzed cytokines. The Th2/Th17 profile in the second dose was characterized by gene expression analysis. The production of IgM and IgG after vaccination showed statistically significant values in the comparison between doses. CoronaVac showed activation of APCs monocytes, memory response of T and B lymphocytes, with immunoglobulins production. This set of responses is characterized by the Th2/Th17 immunological profile.

Abstract Pattern recognition receptors participate in the innate immune response. Among PRRs, the cGAS/STING pathway is known to detect cytosolic DNA and cyclic dinucleotides, but it’s also important in RNA virus infection. We aimed to evaluate the gene expression of some important genes of cGAS/STING pathway and to correlate this expression with Zika virus kinetics in mice microglia and neurons. Cells were infected by MOI = 1.0. Indirect immunofluorescence, plaque titration of supernatant, extraction, and quantification of total intracellular RNA, RT-qPCR and Western blotting were performed. Plaque titration profile in microglia and neurons was similar, including higher titers of plaque forming units at 24, 48, 72 and 96 hpi, respectively. ZIKV kinetics evaluated by RT-qPCR was similar in both cells, with highest viral titers at 48, 72, 24 and 96 hpi, respectively. Expression profile of cGAS, STING, INF-α and INF-β was quite different between the cells, including gene suppression, as observed for cGAS in neurons. Our results showed a differentiated expression profile of cGAS/STING pathway genes in mice microglia and neurons, which can be explained by the different mechanisms that ZIKV uses to bypass the immune response of these cells. Furthermore, each cell type responds differently to combat the viral infection.

Abstract In this paper, a robust approach to improve the performance of a condition monitoring process in industrial plants by using Pythagorean membership grades is presented. The FCM algorithm is modified by using Pythagorean fuzzy sets, to obtain a new variant of it called Pythagorean Fuzzy C-Means (PyFCM). In addition, a kernel version of PyFCM (KPyFCM) is obtained in order to achieve greater separability among classes, and reduce classification errors. The approach proposed is validated using experimental datasets and the Tennessee Eastman (TE) process benchmark. The results are compared with the results obtained with other algorithms that use standard and non-standard membership grades. The highest performance obtained by the approach proposed indicate its feasibility.
