Abstract Dioscorea trifida tuber contains starch, vitamins, minerals and bioactive compounds. It is perishable, requiring dehydration treatment to increase shelf life. This study aimed to investigate the mass transfer parameters and thermodynamic properties of Dioscorea trifida using Refractance Window (RW) drying (70, 80, and 90 °C). It was observed that the dehydration process occurred in a short time (40 min). The moisture diffusivity and the mass transfer coefficient were determined using the Dincer and Dost model. The diffusivity coefficients ranged from 2.62 × 10-6 at 6.13 × 10-6 m2 s-1, the mass transfer coefficient ranged from 3.46 × 10-4 at 4.04 × 10-4 m s-1 and the estimated of activation energy was 44.091 kJ mol-1. In the Dioscorea trifida Refractance Window drying, the enthalpy and entropy are positive and negative, respectively, decreasing with increasing temperature and thus indicating that the process is endothermic. Gibbs free energy increases with increasing temperature, indicating that the process does not occur spontaneously.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to quantify damage and yield losses in lettuce parasitized by Meloidogyne javanica, as well as the growth characteristics of naturally cultivated field plants infested by this pathogen. The experimental area consisted of four seedbeds of 10.0x1.60 m cultivated with 160 plants in each, totaling 640 plants. The damages and yield loss were quantified in four evaluations (Ev1, Ev2, Ev3, and Ev4), with each evaluation corresponding to a cultivation cycle. The four plantings were made in the consecutive form. The fresh mass weight and dry mass weight (FMW and DMW, respectively), gall number (GN), and final population of the nematodes (FP) were evaluated. The population increase of M. javanica caused a reduction in the FMW and DMW in all evaluations. In Ev1 and Ev2, 100% of the plants were commercialized. In Ev3 and Ev4, 7% and 65% of the plants, respectively, could not be commercialized. The Ev4 was completely unviable since the produce had losses of U$ 7.42; U$ 23.19 and U$ 1,484.10 for the cultivation of 640; 2,000 and 128,000 plants, respectively. The economic threshold in Ev4 was 10,151 nematodes/plant or 109 galls/plant.

RESUMEN El objetivo de este trabajo fue cuantificar el daño agronómico en un cultivo de lechugas parasitadas por Meloidogyne javanica y caracterizar el crecimiento de plantas cultivadas en un campo infestado por este patógeno. El estudio se hizo en cuatro camas de 10.0 x 1.60 m cultivadas con 160 plantas en cada una, totalizando 640 plantas por cada ciclo de cultivo. Se hicieron cuatro tratamientos (Ev1, Ev2, Ev3 y Ev4), correspondientes a un ciclo de cultivo. Las cuatro plantaciones se realizaron de forma consecutiva y se seleccionaron 100 plantas al azar para cuantificar el efecto del nematodo en las lechugas. Los parámetros evaluados fueron peso fresco (PMF), peso seco (PMS), número de agallas (NG) y la población final de nematodos (PF). El aumento de la población de M. javanica provocó una reducción de PMF y PMS en todas las evaluaciones. En Ev1 y Ev2 se vendió el 100% de las plantas. En Ev3 y Ev4 hubo un 7% y un 65% de las plantas, respectivamente, que no pudieron venderse. El cuarto ciclo de cultivo (Ev4) resultó completamente inviable, ya que las pérdidas fueron de U $ 7,42; U $ 23,19 y U $ 1.484,10 para el cultivo de 640, 2.000 y 128.000 plantas, respectivamente. El umbral económico en Ev4 fue de 10.151 nematodos /planta o 109 agallas /planta.

Introduction: The goal of this work is to validate tools to assess clinical competences of undergraduate medical students in the workplace. One of the most well-known scales is the Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX). This scale has been vastly studied, however, its validity is very variable amongst studies and it has never been validated to the EU-Portuguese language and context. Subjects and methods: The translation process of the Mini-CEX was conducted by 2 bilingual individuals and overseen by four physicians specialized in medical education. We performed methods of both qualitative (translation, assessment of the translation, back translation) and quantitative nature (internal consistency, construct and content validity analysis). The scale was applied to 3rd year medical students in a simulated assessment environment with a final sample size of 818 assessments. Results: The results show that the Portuguese version of the Mini-CEX is a valid scale and fit its purpose for the assessment of clinical competencies. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient (0.927), confirmed the internal consistency of the scale. Additionally, the validity analysis also proved to be satisfactory, with confirmatory results for all domains of the analysis. Conclusions: This work intends to provide a scale, translated, adapted and validated to Portuguese that is focused on clinical competencies. Given the confirmatory results of the scale's validity, supporting its feasibility and applicability, we believe this tool is ready to be implemented as a complement to clinical skills assessment.

Introducción: El objetivo de este trabajo es validar herramientas para evaluar las competencias clínicas de los estudiantes de medicina de pregrado en el lugar de trabajo. Una de las escalas más conocidas es el Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX). Esta escala se ha estudiado ampliamente, pero su validez es muy variable entre los estudios y nunca se ha validado para el idioma y el contexto portugués europeo. Sujetos y métodos: El proceso de traducción del Mini-CEX fue realizado por dos personas bilingües y supervisado por cuatro médicos especializados en educación médica. Se llevaron a cabo métodos de naturaleza cualitativa (traducción, evaluación de la traducción, traducción inversa) y cuantitativa (consistencia interna, construcción y análisis de validez de contenido). La escala se aplicó a estudiantes de medicina de tercer año en un entorno de evaluación simulada, con un tamaño final de la muestra de 818 evaluaciones. Resultados: Los resultados muestran que la versión portuguesa del Mini-CEX es una escala válida y se ajusta a su propósito para la evaluación de las competencias clínicas. El coeficiente alfa de Cronbach (0,927) confirmó la consistencia interna de la escala. Además, el análisis de validez también demostró ser satisfactorio, con resultados confirmatorios para todos los dominios del análisis. Conclusiones: Este trabajo pretende proporcionar una escala, traducida, adaptada y validada al portugués, que se centre en las competencias clínicas. Dados los resultados confirmatorios de la validez de la escala, que respaldan su viabilidad y aplicabilidad, creemos que esta herramienta está lista para implementarse como complemento de la evaluación de habilidades clínicas.

Abstract A common problem in cryogenic processes is survival at ultra low temperature (-196 °C). Based on the physiological effects of salicylic acid (AS) on the signaling of stress tolerance responses, the objective was to evaluate the effect of AS on increasing survival and on the growth of potato buds undergoing cryogenics. Microplants of the advanced clone 06-27 of the Germplasm Bank in vitro of the Potato Program in Metepec State of Mexico, Mexico, were incubated for 28 days in AS (0, 10-6 and 10-5 M) and subsequently subjected to cryogenic process. Effect of AS in plant regeneration: a significant increase in survival was observed in plants pretreated with AS 10-5 and 10-6 M with respect to the control (1.66-2.04 times respectively). Fresh weight, stem length and root significantly increased in microplants pretreated with AS with respect to the control. Cryogenesis: both concentrations of 10-5 and 10-6 M AS induced significantly greater survival (2.17-3.21 times respectively) of explants to cryogenics. Plants preincubated in AS and regenerated after being subjected to cryogenics for 1 h significantly increased root length. The control showed callus formation, absent in the plants treated with AS. The AS-cryogenic combination favored the development of plants subjected to methods that employ ultra-low temperatures in potatoes for the purpose of germplasm cryopreservation or cryotherapy to obtain virus-free materials.

Resumen Un problema común en los procesos criogénicos es la supervivencia a temperatura ultra baja (-196 °C). Con base a los efectos fisiológicos del ácido salicílico (AS) en la señalización de respuestas de tolerancia a estrés, el objetivo fue evaluar el efecto de AS en el incremento de la supervivencia y en el crecimiento de yemas de papa sometidas a criogenia. Microplantas del clon avanzado 06-27 del Banco de Germoplasma in vitro del Programa de Papa en Metepec Estado de México, México, fueron incubadas por 28 días en AS (0, 10-6 y 10-5 M) y sometidas posteriormente a proceso criogénico. Efecto de AS en regeneración de plantas: se observó un incremento significativo en la supervivencia en plantas pretratadas con AS 10-5 y 10-6 M con respecto al testigo (1.66-2.04 veces respectivamente). El peso fresco, longitud de tallo y raíz incrementaron significativamente en microplantas pretratadas con AS con respecto al testigo. Criogenia: ambas concentraciones de AS 10-5 y 10-6 M indujeron significativamente mayor supervivencia (2.17-3.21 veces respectivamente) de explantes a criogenia. Plantas preincubadas en AS y regeneradas después de ser sometidas 1 h a criogenia incrementaron significativamente la longitud de raíz. El testigo presentó formación de callo, ausente en las plantas tratadas con AS. La combinación AS-criogenia favoreció el desarrollo de plantas sometidas a métodos que emplean temperaturas ultra bajas en papa con fines de criopreservación de germoplasma o en crioterapia para la obtención de materiales libres de virus.

Abstract During January to October 2014, variables of insectivorous birds Turdidae were recorded in order to determine patterns of their trophic spectrum considering their feeding techniques and diets in a Pinus cembroides forest under two conditions of apparent disturbance in their canopy opening: semi-preserved (BPS) and disturbed (BPP) in the high protected natural area (ANPPA). It is used Canfield line methods, quadrants with central point and embedded frames, cut and shake of branches, count in points of 25 m with intensive search, capture with fog nets by constant effort; as well as indices of relative abundance (IAR), frequency of observation (Fo); Kruskal-Wallis, multiple correspondences (ACM); indexes of Jacknife1, Shannon-Wiener, Jaccard; χ2 tests, Cluster, Poisson regression (ARP). The IAR was similar, Fo show analogy; Kruskal-Wallis there are no differences, ACM formed defined groups; the average richness, diversity and similarity of the entomological orders were relatively low; χ2 the proportion of registered individuals are different, cluster graphically there are different groups, ARP there is effect of some plant variables on the abundances of insects and birds. Some patterns of the trophic amplitude of this type of birds were understood; finding that they contribute to the biological control of certain entomological components that could become harmful and forest pests of this type of forest; generating basic knowledge about the role played by the opening of the canopy in the presence of prey; however, it seems not to have it on avifaunal abundances in this particular region of Mexico.

Resumen Durante enero a octubre de 2014 se registraron variables de aves insectívoras Turdidae con el objeto de determinar patrones de su espectro trófico considerando sus técnicas de alimentación y dietas en un bosque de Pinus cembroides bajo dos condiciones de perturbación aparente en su apertura de dosel: semiconservado (BPS) y perturbado (BPP) en el área natural protegida peña alta (ANPPA). Se emplearon métodos de línea de Canfield, cuadrantes con punto central y cuadros empotrados, corte y sacudida de ramas, recuento en puntos de 25 m con búsqueda intensiva, captura con redes de niebla mediante esfuerzo constante; así como índices de abundancia relativa (IAR), frecuencia de observación (Fo); Kruskal-Wallis, correspondencias múltiples (ACM); índices de Jacknife1, Shannon-Wiener, Jaccard; pruebas de χ2, clúster, regresión Poisson (ARP). El IAR fue similar, Fo muestran analogía; Kruskal-Wallis no existen diferencias, ACM conformaron grupos definidos; la riqueza, diversidad y similitud promedio de los órdenes entomológicos fueron relativamente bajas; χ2 la proporción de individuos registrados son diferentes, clúster gráficamente existen diversos grupos, ARP existe efecto de algunas variables vegetales sobre las abundancias de insectos y aves. Se lograron comprender algunos patrones de la amplitud trófica de este tipo de aves; encontrando que coadyuvan en el control biológico de ciertos componentes entomológicos que pudieran tornarse perjudiciales y plagas forestales de estos bosques; generando conocimiento básico sobre el papel que juega la apertura del dosel en la presencia de presas; sin embargo, parece no tenerlo sobre las abundancias avifaunísticas en esta región particular de México.

ABSTRACT This study was intended to estimate the genetic associations between growth traits and visual scores with possible changes in mature weight (MW) in 397,900 Nellore animals. A bi-character analysis was performed to estimate the (co)variances and genetic parameters for MW, which comprises the following traits: conformation, finishing precocity, musculature at weaning (WC, WP, and WM) and yearling (YC, YP, and YM), birth weight (BW), weight from birth to weaning (WG), weight from weaning to yearling (YG), and final index (FIND). The observed mean MW was 417.6±56.2 kg, and the direct genetic effect mean estimated heritability ( h 2 a 1) of MW was 0.45. Overall, the BW was 31.0±3.7 kg, and the estimated h² was 0.34. The heritability estimate of the maternal additive genetic component ( h 2 m 2) of BW was 0.07. We calculated the mean WG to be 144.1±26.3 and estimated the h 2 a 2 as 0.18 and h 2 m 2 as 0.07. The value for h 2 a YG (0.17) and YW (0.26) were also estimated. The heritability of the weaning WC (0.17), WP (0.19), and WM (0.17) and yearling YC (0.25), YP (0.27), and YM (0.25) were estimated using visual scores. The h 2 m values for weaning WC, WP, and WM (0.06) with visual scores were estimated. The genetic correlations between body weight (BoW) at YC and WC (0.62) were considered moderately high and positive. In addition, YP (0.18), YM (0.15), WP (0.13), and WM (0.14) were considered moderately low compared with MW. The genetic correlation between BW and FIND (0.38) was considered positive and moderate. The heritability estimation indicates that growth traits, visual scores, and weight of adult cows could be changed by selection. Cows that presented the highest h 2 a values for live weight responded rapidly to selection based on growth characteristics, visual scores, and FIND and might result in increased final MW.

Abstract Aim: to communicate HPN data obtained from the HPN registry of the NADYA-SENPE group (www.nadya-senpe.com) for the year 2017. Material and methods: descriptive analysis of the data collected from adult and pediatric patients with HPN in the NADYA-SENPE group registry from January 1st, 2017 to December 31st, 2017. Results: there were 308 patients from 45 Spanish hospitals (54.5% women), 38 children and 270 adults, with 3,012 episodes, which represent a prevalence rate of 6.61 patients/million inhabitants/year 2017. The most frequent diagnosis in adults was "palliative cancer" (25.6%), followed by "others". In children, it was Hirschsprung's disease with six cases (15.8%). The first indication was short bowel syndrome in both children (55.3%) and adults (33.7%). The most frequently used type of catheter was tunneled in both children (73.4%) and adults (38.2%). Ending 81 episodes, the most frequent cause was death (62.9%) and transition to oral feeding (34.7%). Conclusions: the progressive increase of collaborating centers and professionals in the registry of patients receiving NPD is maintained. The main indications of HPN and the motive for ending have remained stable.

Resumen Objetivo: comunicar los datos de nutrición parenteral domiciliaria (NPD) obtenidos del registro del grupo NADYA-SENPE (www.nadya-senpe.com) del año 2017. Material y métodos: análisis descriptivo de los datos recogidos de pacientes adultos y pediátricos con NPD en el registro NADYA-SENPE desde el 1 de enero al 31 de diciembre de 2017. Resultados: se registraron 308 pacientes (54,5% mujeres), 38 niños y 270 adultos, procedentes de 45 hospitales españoles, en total 312 episodios, lo que representa una tasa de prevalencia de 6,61 pacientes/millón de habitantes/año 2017. El diagnóstico más frecuente en adultos fue "oncológico paliativo" (25,6%), seguido de "otros". En niños fue la enfermedad de Hirschsprung, con seis casos (15,8%). El primer motivo de indicación fue síndrome de intestino corto tanto en niños (55,3%) como en adultos (33,7%). El tipo de catéter más utilizado fue el tunelizado tanto en niños (74,3%) como en adultos (38,2%). Finalizaron 81 episodios; la causa más frecuente fue el fallecimiento (62,9%) y que pasaron a vía oral (34,7%). Conclusiones: se mantiene el incremento progresivo de centros y profesionales colaboradores en el registro de pacientes que reciben NPD. Las principales indicaciones de NPD y de motivo de finalización se mantienen estables.

Abstract Background: Knowledge of growth is relevant because it provides information on the local dynamics of the population. Goals: This study evaluated the growth, size structure, morphometry, and sex ratio of C. bellicosus crab caught in the El Colorado lagoon, Ahome, Sinaloa, Mexico. Methods: Through size distributions and by the modal-progression method using the FISAT II program. Similarly, the growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy stationalized equation and the growth performance or Munro index (Ø) were determined from March 2012 to March 2013. Results: 3,242 organisms of C. bellicosus were captured of which 1,770 were males and 1,472 were females. The population of C. bellicosus in the lagoon ranged in size from 40 mm to 190 mm (CW), showing two similar modes for males and females (100 mm and 110 mm, respectively). The relationships between CL-CW for both sexes were adjusted to a linear type model (males, CL = 0.5265CW-0.0539, R2 = 0.8058, p <0.05, females, CL = 0.581CW-0.6335, R2 = 0.7643, p <0.05). The CW-TW relationship was of potential type (males, TW = 0.561AC3.0751, R2 = 0.7968, p <0.05; females, TW = 0.0834C2.9077, R2 = 0.7589, p <0.05). In females, K = 0.90 years-1 and L∞ = 169 mm, K = 1.20 years-1 and L∞ = 178.5 mm. Conclusions: The growth curves suggest that C. bellicosus reaches its maximum length at 2.5 to 3 years. The sex ratio of 0.81 F : 1 M was significant (X2 (0.05, 11) = 19.675, X2 observada = 58.481, p < 0.05).

Resumen Antecedentes: El conocimiento del crecimiento en cualquier especie es relevante debido a que proporciona información de la dinámica local de la población. Objetivos: Evaluar el crecimiento, la estructura de tallas, la morfometría y la proporción de sexos de las jaibas C. bellicosus capturadas en la laguna El Colorado, Ahome, Sinaloa, México. Métodos: Durante el periodo de marzo de 2012 a marzo de 2013 se evaluaron las distribuciones de frecuencias de tallas y se aplicó el método de progresión modal mediante el programa FiSAT II. Asimismo, se determinaron los parámetros de crecimiento de la ecuación de von Bertalanffy y el desempeño del crecimiento o índice de Munro (Ø). Resultados: Se capturaron 3,242 organismos de C. bellicosus, de los cuales 1,770 fueron machos y 1,472, hembras. La población de C. bellicosus en la laguna presentó un intervalo de tallas de 40 mm a 190 mm (AC), mostrando dos modas similares para machos y hembras (100 mm y 110 mm, respectivamente). Las relaciones entre el LC-AC para ambos sexos se ajustaron a un modelo de tipo lineal (machos, LC = 0.5265AC-0.0539, R2= 0.8058, p <0.05; hembras, LC = 0.581AC-0.6335, R2 = 0.7643, p <0.05). La relación AC-PT fue de tipo potencial (machos, PT = 0.561AC3.0751, R2 = 0.7968, p <0.05; hembras, PT = 0.0834AC2.9077, R2 = 0.7589, p <0.05). En hembras se estimó una K= 0.90 años-1 y L∞ = 169 mm, en los machos fue K = 1.20 años-1 y L∞ = 178.5 mm. Conclusiones: Las curvas de crecimiento sugirieron que C. bellicosus alcanzó su longitud máxima de 2.5 a 3 años. La proporción de sexos de 0.81 H : 1 M fue significativa (X2 (0.05, 11) = 19.675, X2 observada = 58.481, p < 0.05)

Abstract Introduction: The seeds of Jatropha curcas L. are used for the elaboration of regional dishes. An easy method of propagation would be useful for producers who market or consume seeds of this species. Objective: Test a method of vegetative propagation of J. curcas, planted in the field, for human consumption. Materials and methods: The vegetative propagation was carried out in the spring with 55 cm-stakes, obtained from secondary and tertiary branches from 28 years old trees. The cuttings were planted 3 m away in a loamy clay loam soil with pH of 7.21, and 1.11 % organic matter. The growth was evaluated at 120 days. Total carbohydrates were determined by a colorimetric method, two months before and eight months after field establishment. Results and discussion: Cuttings of J. curcas secondary branches with exfoliating bark and diameter of 3.6 to 4.0 cm at the base, at the beginning of propagation, achieved greater height, number of branches and greater concentration of total carbohydrates before and after establishment. This vegetative material is recommended for the propagation of J. curcas in the field. The cuttings of tertiary branches with diameters of 1.6 to 1.9 cm had mortality of 17 %, reduced capacity to generate branches and lower concentration of carbohydrates. Conclusions: The propagation of J. curcas, by cuttings, was successful in the open field; it was not necessary to use a greenhouse, auxins for rooting or polyethylene bags, prior to establishment.

Resumen Introducción: Las semillas de Jatropha curcas L. (piñón o piñoncillo) son utilizadas para la elaboración de platillos regionales. Un método fácil de propagación sería útil para los productores que comercializan o consumen semillas de esta especie. Objetivo: Probar un método de propagación vegetativo de J. curcas, plantada en campo, para consumo humano. Materiales y métodos: La propagación vegetativa se hizo en primavera con estacas de 55 cm de longitud, obtenidas de ramas secundarias y terciarias de árboles de 28 años. Las estacas se plantaron a 3 m de distancia en un suelo franco arcillo arenoso con pH 7.21, y 1.11 % de materia orgánica. El crecimiento se evaluó a los 120 días. Los carbohidratos totales se determinaron por un método colorimétrico, dos meses antes y ocho meses después del establecimiento en campo. Resultados y discusión: Las estacas de ramas secundarias de J. curcas con corteza exfoliante y diámetro de 3.6 a 4.0 cm en la base, al inicio de su propagación, alcanzaron mayor altura, número de ramas y mayor concentración de carbohidratos totales antes y después del establecimiento. Este material vegetativo es el recomendado para la propagación de J. curcas en campo. Las estacas de ramas terciarias con diámetros de 1.6 a 1.9 cm tuvieron mortalidad de 17 %, reducida capacidad para emitir ramas y menor concentración de carbohidratos. Conclusión: La propagación de J. curcas, por estacas, fue exitosa a la intemperie; no fue necesario el uso de invernadero, auxinas para enraizamiento ni bolsas de polietileno, previo al establecimiento.

Resumen El incremento de la degradación de los hábitats naturales ha fortalecido la necesidad de conocer y evaluar los patrones de biodiversidad; siendo los inventarios biológicos y la suficiencia taxonómica herramientas que permiten describir y monitorear la diversidad en cortos períodos de tiempo. El estudio de la araneofauna en el norte Argentino es escaso en particular en ecorregiones donde se considera prioritario conservar sus ambientes. Las arañas son utilizadas como taxón indicador para comparar patrones de biodiversidad, donde el estudio de las familias y de los gremios puede potencialmente servir como sustitutos ecológicos de las especies dando indicación del uso del hábitat y de las estrategias de forrajeo. En este estudio, analizamos la diversidad alfa y beta de las comunidades de arañas epigeas en diferentes ecorregiones de la provincia de Salta (Chaco Serrano, Monte de Sierras y Bolsones, y Puna) utilizando trampas de caída y muestreos en las cuatro estaciones del año; y testeamos si el nivel taxonómico familia, en el caso de las arañas, puede actuar como potencial sustituto del nivel especie en las evaluaciones rápidas de biodiversidad. Para ello, en cada ecorregión seleccionamos tres sitios ampliamente separados que fueron muestreados durante el otoño, invierno, primavera y verano del 2005-2007. En cada sitio se colocaron 10 trampas de caída separadas por 10 m a lo largo de una transecta lineal y con una actividad de 7 días por estación. Se recolectaron 886 arañas de 100 especies/morfoespecies correspondientes a 19 familias. La ecorregión Chaco (S = 56, N = 495) reportó la mayor riqueza de especies y abundancia comparada con el Monte (S = 44, N = 262) y la Puna (S = 23, N = 129). La completitud del inventario obtenido para cada ecorregión fue completa, superando el 70 %. La diversidad alfa y beta evidenciaron que las comunidades ecorregionales de arañas fueron diferentes. Las estaciones más frías (otoño e invierno) demostraron ser claves a la hora de evaluar la diversidad de arañas en las ecorregiones, aportando a la diversidad regional conjuntamente con la diversidad de las estaciones cálidas (primavera y verano). Además, el nivel taxonómico de familia evidenció reflejar, de igual manera que el nivel especie, los cambios en la diversidad alfa y beta. El uso de trampas de caída en todas las estaciones del año y el reconocimiento de las familias de arañas para la fauna epigea son de gran utilidad para realizar futuras evaluaciones rápidas de biodiversidad en el área en estudio; permitiendo así incorporar este grupo taxonómico en los estudios de monitoreo de biodiversidad que se lleven a cabo en estas ecorregiones.

Abstract The increased degradation of natural habitats has strengthened the need to know and assess biodiversity patterns. Particularly, the study of the spider fauna in the North of Argentina is scarce in ecoregions with priority interests of conservation. Generally, spiders are used as indicators to compare biodiversity patterns, and here we tested whether the spider family-level can act as a substitute of the species-level in biodiversity rapid assessments. For this, we analyzed the alpha and beta diversity of the epigeal spider communities in three separate sites of three ecoregions of Salta province (Chaco Serrano, Monte de Sierras and Bolsones, and Puna), during the fall, winter, spring and summer of 2005-2007. In each site, 10 pitfall traps, located along a linear transect and 10 meters apart, were placed for seven days per season of continuous activity. A total of 886 spiders were collected from 100 species/morphospecies of 19 families. The completeness of the inventory obtained for each ecoregion surpassed 70 %. The Chaco ecoregion (S = 56, N = 495) reported the highest species richness and abundance compared to Monte (S = 44, N = 262) and Puna (S = 23, N = 129). Alpha and beta diversity showed that ecoregional spider communities were different, sharing few species (0.7 %). The Chaco reported a high dissimilarity of its assemblage with respect to the other ecoregions. The colder seasons (autumn and winter) are important in assessing the diversity of spiders, contributing to regional diversity in conjunction with the diversity of warm seasons (spring and summer). Four guilds were reported (ground hunters, specialists, other hunters and ambush hunters), but the latter was absent in Monte, and the specialists dominated Chaco. Zodariidae was dominant in Chaco Serrano, where Leprolochus birabeni is an indicator of native environments. On the other hand, Lycosidae, Philodromidae, Anyphaenidae and Oonopidae were important for Monte and Puna. Year-round pitfall traps and identification of epigeal spider families are useful for biodiversity rapid assessments in this area. Like the species-level, the taxonomic family-level evidenced changes in alpha and beta diversity. This allows the inclusion of this taxonomic group for future biodiversity monitoring. Rev. Biol. Objective: To evaluate the influence of high altitude on C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in adults with abdominal visceral adiposity. Materials and methods: A quantitative study with quasi-experimental design, which included twenty-four (24) male medical students from the National University of Trujillo, selected by non-probability convenience sampling and study subject, evaluated at 0 and 4,386 m.a.s.l., and classified according to their degree of abdominal visceral adiposity: normal (G1) and high (G2). Results: The CRP level of G1 in relation to G2 showed no significant difference. Regarding CRP levels, Wilcoxon rank-sum (non-parametric) test was used for G2 and Student´s t-test was used for G1, with significance being shown in both cases. Conclusions: Variations on CRP levels in high altitude compared to sea level in both groups were significant

Objetivo: Evaluar la influencia de la altura en los niveles de proteína C reactiva (PCR) en adultos con adiposidad visceral abdominal. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio cuantitativo con diseño cuasi-experimental, que incluyó veinticuatro estudiantes de medicina de la Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, sexo masculino, seleccionados de manera no probabilística por conveniencia y sujeto participante, que fueron evaluados a 0 y 4386 m s. n. m. y clasificados de acuerdo al grado de adiposidad visceral abdominal: normal (G1) y elevada (G2). Resultados: El nivel de PCR de G1 en relación a G2 no tuvo diferencia significativa. Respecto a los niveles de PCR de G2 se empleó la prueba no paramétrica de Wilcoxon y para G1 se usó la prueba T-student, evidenciándose una significancia en ambos casos. Conclusiones: Las variaciones de los niveles de PCR en altura con respecto al basal de ambos grupos fueron significativos

ABSTRACT: Ruzigrass (Urochola ruziziensis) has a large capacity to take up K from the soil, including non-exchangeable forms, and can play an important role in nutrient cycling in integrated production systems. However, K transport to roots of brachiarias is not well known, nor the nutrient dynamics in the rhizosphere, where a concentration gradient may be established towards the non-rhizospheric soil, creating a favorable environment for the release of non-exchangeable K. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ruzigrass on K dynamics in the rhizosphere and on non-exchangeable K release. Ruzigrass was grown in pots filled with a Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo (Typic Hapludox) that was collected at 0.00-0.20 and 0.20-0.60 m layer from a cultivated area and fertilized with 0, 30, and 60 mg kg−1 of K, plus a treatment with forest soil, used as control. Thirty days after plant emergence, soil samples were taken at the following distances from the roots: 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 3.0, 5.0, and 10.0 mm. For the highest exchangeable K rate (60 mg dm−3), the exchangeable K level was higher from 0 to 0.5 mm of the roots for both soils (0.00-0.20 and 0.20-0.60 m). Therefore, more K was transported to the rhizosphere than the plant could take up. A depletion of exchangeable K observed in the rhizosphere resulted in the release of K from non-exchangeable forms, as observed in the soils from 0.00-0.20 (60 mg dm−3) and 0.20-0.60 m (without application of K). Ruzigrass grown on low K soils without fertilizer application results in a larger exchangeable K depletion zone than in soils that were fertilized or originally high in exchangeable K, showing a high potential for K cycling in the system.

ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to characterize the floristic-structural heterogeneity of the tree species in an alluvial forest remnant considering three sectors: forest-river edge, forest interior and forest/non-forest matrix edge. Forty-eight plots of 200 m 2 were allocated and all tree individuals with a diameter at breast height (dbh) equal to or greater than 5 cm were measured and identified. Data was analyzed by Shannon’s diversity index, Pielou evenness and phytosociological descriptors. Plots were ordered through NMDS. Sixty-six species were sampled and Myrtaceae was found to be the richest family. Diversity and evenness reached 2.96 and 0.71, respectively. Sebastiania commersoniana (Baill.) L.B.Sm. & Downs presented the highest importance value (21.22%). The NMDS showed that tree components are spatially partitioned according to sectors, therefore indicating floristic-structural heterogeneity.
