OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of a complex-care-based medical school in the context of the Brazilian health care system on students’ career choices. METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study based on medical regulatory organization records. It included records for 7,419 physicians who graduated from FMUSP. Geographic data were analyzed using Kernel maps, and the statistical analysis was performed with SPSS® version 24.0. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Of the 7,419 physicians, 68.6% (95% CI 67.5-69.7) were male, and 20.7% (95% CI 19.8%-21.7%) had no medical specialty, compared to 46.4% nationwide. Internal medicine and surgery-based specialties were more popular, accounting for 39.4% (95% CI 38.3%-40.5%) and 16.8% (95% CI 15.5%-17.6%) of our study group, compared to the Brazilian averages of 25.9% and 13.5%. Our graduates also had a higher probability of staying in São Paulo City, especially when born outside the city. CONCLUSION: We believe that FMUSP remains an interesting model for studying the impact of a highly specialized center on the education and career choices of medical students.

O nitrogênio é o nutriente extraído em maior quantidade pelo milho, o de manejo mais complexo e o que mais onera o custo de produção da cultura. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade econômica de diferentes doses e parcelamentos da adubação nitrogenada, na forma de uréia, na cultura do milho em LATOSSOLO VERMELHO Eutrófico. O estudo foi conduzido na Estação Experimental do Pólo Regional do Desenvolvimento dos Agronegócios do Noroeste Paulista (APTA), em Votuporanga, Estado de São Paulo. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados com nove tratamentos e quatro repetições, constituído de cinco doses de N: 0, 55, 95, 135 e 175 kg ha¹, aplicandose 15 kg ha¹na semeadura e o restante em cobertura, combinadas a diferentes fracionamentos em cobertura: 40 e 80 kg aos 40 dias após a semeadura (DAS) ou ½ + ½ aos 20 e 40 DAS; 120 kg ha¹ de N fracionados em ½ + ½ ou ⅓ + ⅓ + ⅓ aos 20, 40 ou 60 DAS; 160 kg ha¹ de N parcelado sem ¼ + ⅜ + ⅜ ou ¼ + ¼ + ¼ + ¼ aos 20, 40, 60 ou 80 DAS. A aplicação de 135 kg ha¹ de N parcelada em três vezes proporcionou maior relação benefício/custo. A não aplicação de N proporcionou menor retorno econômico, demonstrando ser inviável.

Nitrogen is the nutrient that is most absorbed by the corn crop, with the most complex management, and has the highest share on the cost of corn production. The objective of this work was to evaluate the economic viability of different rates and splitapplications of nitrogen fertilization, as such as urea, in the corn crop in a eutrophic Red Latosol (Oxisol). The study was carried out in the Experimental Station of the Regional Pole of the Sao Paulo Northwest Agribusiness Development (APTA), in Votuporanga, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks with nine treatments and four replications, consisting of five N rates: 0, 55, 95, 135 and 175 kg ha¹, 15 kg ha¹ applied in the seeding and the remainder in top dressing: 40 and 80 kg ha¹ N at forty days after seeding (DAS), or ½ + ½ at 20 and 40 DAS; 120 kg ha¹ N splitin ½ + ½ or ⅓ + ⅓ + ⅓ at 20, 40 or 60 DAS; 160 kg ha¹ N split in ¼ + ⅜ + ⅜ or ¼ + ¼ + ¼ + ¼ at 20, 40, 60 and 80 DAS. The application of 135 kg ha¹ of N split in three times provided the best benefit/cost ratio. The nonapplication of N provided the lowest economic return, proving to be unviable.

O nitrogênio é o nutriente mineral extraído em maior quantidade pelo milho, o que mais influencia a produtividade de grãos e o único absorvido como cátion (NH4+) ou anion (NO3-). Os objetivos deste trabalho foram investigar o acúmulo pelos grãos de milho do nitrogênio aplicado ao solo sob as formas amoniacal e nítrica, do nitrato de amônio, comparado à amídica, da uréia, marcados com 15N; determinar o estádio de desenvolvimento da planta de milho em que se atinge o máximo aproveitamento do N do fertilizante pelos grãos e; quantificar o N do solo exportado pelos grãos de milho. O estudo foi desenvolvido no Polo Regional do Desenvolvimento dos Agronegócios do Noroeste Paulista (APTA), em Votuporanga (SP), em um Latossolo Vermelho. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados com 13 tratamentos e quatro repetições, dispostos em esquema fatorial 6 x 2 + 1 (testemunha, sem aplicação de N). Utilizou-se uma dose equivalente a 120 kg ha-1 de nitrogênio, compreendida pelas fontes uréia-15N e nitrato de amônio, com enriquecimento no cátion NH4+ (15NH4+NO3-) ou no anion NO3- (NH4+15NO3- ), aplicado em seis parcelamentos de 20 kg ha-1 de N, em microparcelas distintas, desde a semeadura até o estádio fenológico 7 (grãos pastosos). O nitrogênio aplicado sob a forma amoniacal ou nítrica foi acumulado equitativamente pelo milho. O milho acumulou mais nitrogênio da uréia do que do nitrato de amônio. O N aplicado ao milho no estádio de oito folhas expandidas promoveu maior acúmulo deste nutriente nos grãos.

Nitrogen is the most absorbed mineral nutrient by corn crop and most affects grains yield. It is the unique nutrient absorbed by plants as cation (NH4+) or anion (NO3-). The objectives of this work were to investigate the N accumulation by corn grains applied to the soil as NH4+ or NO3- in the ammonium nitrate form compared to amidic form of the urea, labeled with 15N; to determine the corn growth stage with highest fertilizer N utilization by the grains, and to quantify soil nitrogen exported by corn grains. The study was carried out in the Experimental Station of the Regional Pole of the Sao Paulo Northwestern Agribusiness Development (APTA), in Votuporanga, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in a Red Latosol. The experimental design was completely randomized blocks, with 13 treatments and four replications, disposed in factorial outline 6x2 + 1 (control, without N application). A nitrogen rate equivalent to 120 kg N ha-1 as urea-15N or as ammonium nitrate, labeled in the cation NH4+ (15NH4+NO3-) or in the anion NO3- (NH4+15NO3- ), was applied in six fractions of 20 kg N ha-1 each, in different microplots, from seeding to the growth stage 7 (pasty grains). The forms of nitrogen, NH4+-N and NO3--N, were accumulated equitably by corn grains. The corn grains accumulated more N from urea than from ammonium nitrate. The N applied to corn crop at eight expanded leaves stage promoted largest accumulation of this nutrient in the grains.

O N é o nutriente absorvido em maior quantidade pelo milho, o que mais influencia a produtividade de grãos e o de manejo mais complexo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de doses e parcelamentos de N, na forma de uréia 15N, sobre a produtividade de grãos, o aproveitamento do N do fertilizante e a quantidade de N nativo do solo absorvida pelo milho em um Latossolo Vermelho. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados com nove tratamentos e quatro repetições, compreendido de cinco doses de N: 0, 55, 95, 135 e 175 kg ha-1 de N, aplicando-se 15 kg na semeadura e o restante em diferentes estratégias de parcelamentos: 40 e 80 kg ha-1 no estádio de oito folhas ou ½ no estádio de quatro folhas + ½ no estádio de oito folhas; 120 kg ha-1 fracionados em ½ + ½ ou ¹/3 + ¹/3 + ¹/3 no estádio de quatro, oito ou 12 folhas; e 160 kg ha-1 parcelados em ¼ + ³/8 + ³/8 ou ¼ + ¼ + ¼ + ¼ no estádio de quatro, oito, 12 folhas ou de florescimento e polinização. O aproveitamento do N do fertilizante pelo milho foi, em média, de 39 % e o solo foi a principal fonte do nutriente para a cultura. A aplicação de 135 kg ha-1 de N parcelados em três vezes, até o estádio de oito folhas, proporcionou maior aproveitamento do N do fertilizante (52 %) e maior produtividade de grãos.

Nitrogen is the nutrient that is most absorbed by corn crop, influences grain yield most, and requires the most complex management. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen (urea 15N) rate and split-applications, on grain yield, N fertilizer utilization and amount of soil native N absorbed by corn crop in a Red Latosol. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design, with nine treatments and four replications, represented by five N rates: 0, 55, 95, 135 and 175 kg ha-1 N, 15 kg of N applied at sowing, and the remaining amount in different split-applications: 40 and 80 kg ha-1 applied in single rates in the 8-leaf stage or half in the 4-leaf stage + half in the 8-leaf stage; 120 kg ha-1 split in 1/2 + 1/2 or 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 in the 4, 8 or 12-leaf stage; 160 kg ha-1 split in 1/4 + 3/8 + 3/8 or 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 in the 4, 8, 12-leaf stages or at flowering and pollination. The N fertilizer use by corn was, on average, 39 %, and the soil was the main source of the nutrient for the crop. With three split applications of 135 kg ha-1 N, until 8 leaves, the N fertilizer use is most efficient (52 %) and the grain yield highest.

Considerando a escassez de antígenos quimicamente definidos, realmente úteis e confiáveis para aplicação na soroepidemiologia da esquistossomose em larga escala, foi proposto, neste trabalho, um método alternativo para a seleção de clones de cDNA que expressam proteínas com putativo potencial diagnóstico na esquistossomose. Empregando anticorpos específicos contra uma fração proteica de 31/32 kDa (Sm31/32), purificados através da dissociação de imunocomplexos, foram selecionados cinco clones de cDNA a partir de genoteca de verme adulto de Schistosoma mansoni. O seqüenciamento parcial destes clones demonstrou que todos eram relacionados ao S. mansoni: dois apresentaram homologia com a proteína de choque térmico de 70 kDa e os demais com glutationa S-transferase, "homeodomain protein" e uma etiqueta de seqüência expressa (EST). Este último foi o clone que melhor reagiu, durante o processo de seleção, com os anticorpos anti-Sm31/32 dissociados de imunocomplexos. Baseado na seqüência de aminoácidos deste clone, dois peptídeos foram quimicamente sintetizados e analisados separadamente frente a misturas de soros de indivíduos normais e de pacientes com esquistossomose mansoni. Ambos os peptídeos demonstraram uma intensa reatividade somente contra a mistura de soros positivos, sugerindo que estes peptídeos podem ser úteis como antígenos para o diagnóstico da esquistossomose mansoni.

Considering the scarcity of defined antigens, actually useful and reliable for use in the field studies, we propose an alternative method for selection of cDNA clones with potential use in the diagnosis of schistosomiasis. Human antibodies specific to a protein fraction of 31/32 kDa (Sm31/32), dissociated from immune complexes, are used for screening of clones from an adult worm cDNA library. Partial sequencing of five clones, selected through this strategy, showed to be related to Schistosoma mansoni: two were identified as homologous to heat shock protein 70, one to glutathione S-transferase, one to homeodomain protein, and one to a previously described EST (expressed sequence tag) of S. mansoni. This last clone was the most consistently reactive during the screening process with the anti-Sm31/32 antibodies dissociated from the immune complexes. The complete sequence of this clone was obtained and the translation data yielded only one ORF (open reading frame) that code for a protein with 57 amino acids. Based on this amino acid sequence two peptides were chemically synthesized and evaluated separately against a pool of serum samples from schistosomiasis patients and non-schistosomiasis individuals. Both peptides showed strong reactivity only against the positive pool, suggesting that these peptides may be useful as antigens for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis mansoni.

Foi isolado um clone recombinante (lambda 3b2-5) de ADN genômico de Trypanosoma cruzi, o qual contém seqüências que estão reiteradas no genoma. Análise através da técnica de "Northern blot" mostrou que o clone 3b2-5 hibridiza com diferentes espécies de ARNs mensageiros de 1.200 a 5.000 bases. O número de espécies de ARNs mensageiros que hibridiza com o clone 3b2-5 excede sua capacidade codante, sugerindo que este clone apresenta seqüências que são comuns a muitas espécies de ARNs mensageiros e conservadas no ARN poliadenilado. Estas seqüências não são homológas a seqüência líder presente nos ARNs de T. cruzi, pois, o clone 3b2-5 não hibridiza com um nucleotídeo sintético complementar a seqüência líder. O clone 3b2-5 não hibridiza com o ADN e ARN de diferentes gêneros de tripanosomatídeos e outras espécies de tripanosomas indicando que ele apresenta seqüências específicas para o T. cruzi.

We have isolated a clone of Trypanosoma cruzi genimic DNA, lambda 3b2-5, which contains sequences that are reiterated in the genome. Northtern blot analysis showed that clone 3b2-5 hybridizes to 1,200-5,000 bases different mRNA species. The number of mRNAs species hybridized to clone 3b2-5 exceeds its coding capacity showing that this clone carries sequences that are common to several mRNAs species and conserved in the poly A(+) RNA. These sequences are not homologous to the T. cruzi spliced leader sequence, since clone 3b2-5 hybridize to a synthetic 20 nucleotice complementary to the spliced leader sequence. Clone 3b2-5 does not hybridize to DNA and RNA from several genera of Trypanosomatidae and other Trypanosoma species indicating that it carries T. cruzi species-specific sequences.
