ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the performance of normal-hearing adults with communication complaints in the Dichotic Sentences Test. Methods We selected from the database 15 normal-hearing participants with normal results in the Digits Dichotic Test, aged between 19 and 44 years, right-handed, who reported communicative complaints. The Dichotic Sentences Test was applied using two protocols consisting of four different combinations of lists called sequences 1 and 2, in the following order: training, divided attention step, right and left directed attention steps. Results In the first application sequence, the average performance in the divided attention step was 84.7% for the right ear and 60.67% for the left, with statistical difference between ears. The asymmetry between ears varied from -50% to 60%. In the directed attention step, the average performance was 99.33% for the right ear and 98% for the left, with no statistical difference. In the second application sequence, there was a tendency for better results, more pronounced for the left ear, with no statistical significance, with the performance variation and asymmetry between ears remaining high. In the comparison between the sequences, in the divided attention step, it was found that, for the right ear, 40% of the individuals did not vary, 33% performed worse, and 26.7% performed better; for the left ear, 6.6% did not vary, 20% performed worse, and 73.33% performed better. There was result stability in the directed attention step. Conclusion The normal-hearing adults with communication complaints presented a heterogeneous profile, especially in the divided attention step, with a marked difference between ears and response variability.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar o desempenho de adultos normo-ouvintes com queixa comunicativa no Teste Dicótico de Sentenças. Método Selecionou-se em banco de dados, 15 participantes normo-ouvintes com resultados normais no Teste Dicótico de Dígitos, idades entre 19 a 44 anos, destros, que referiram queixa comunicativa. O Teste de Dicótico de Sentenças foi aplicado por meio de dois protocolos compostos por quatro diferentes combinações de listas denominados de sequências 1 e 2, de acordo com a seguinte ordem: treino, etapa de atenção dividida, etapas de atenção direcionada à direita e à esquerda. Resultados Na sequência de aplicação 1, a média de desempenho na etapa de atenção dividida foi 84,67% na orelha direita e 60,67% na esquerda, com diferença estatística entre orelhas, com assimetria entre orelhas variando de -50% a 60%. Na etapa de atenção direcionada, a média de desempenho foi 99,33% na orelha direita e 98% na esquerda, sem diferença estatística. Na sequência de aplicação 2, houve tendência de melhores resultados, mais acentuada na orelha esquerda, sem significância estatística, mantendo elevadas a variação de desempenho e a assimetria entre orelhas. Verificou-se na comparação entre as sequências, na etapa de atenção dividida, que na orelha direita 40% dos indivíduos não variaram, 33% pioraram, 26,7% melhoraram; na orelha esquerda, 6,6% não variaram, 20% pioraram e 73,33% melhoraram. Na etapa de atenção direcionada houve estabilidade nos resultados. Conclusão Os adultos normo-ouvintes, com queixas comunicativas, apresentaram um perfil heterogêneo, especialmente na etapa de atenção dividida, com acentuada diferença entre as orelhas e variabilidade de respostas.

RESUMO Objetivo Elaborar novas listas de monossílabos para realização de testes logoaudiométricos na Língua Portuguesa, realizar a validação de conteúdo, considerando lado da orelha e escolaridade e verificar a equivalência entre as listas. Método Foram selecionados 125 monossílabos com diferentes estruturas silábicas, os quais foram submetidos ao processo de validação de conteúdo, que incluiu o julgamento quanto à familiaridade, organização das listas, gravação do material e reconhecimento auditivo. Após a validação de conteúdo, as listas de monossílabos foram submetidas à pesquisa de equivalência, a fim de obter evidências de fidedignidade para o instrumento de teste proposto. Resultados Cinco listas com 25 monossílabos foram elaboradas e analisadas quanto ao conteúdo, destas, quatro listas foram validadas. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre as respostas obtidas nas orelhas direitas e esquerdas. A escolaridade dos sujeitos não influenciou o reconhecimento das palavras. Quanto à pesquisa de equivalência, verificou-se que duas listas foram equivalentes, uma não equivalente, porém semelhante e uma lista foi diferente das demais, e então excluída. Conclusão Duas listas de monossílabos foram validadas quanto ao conteúdo e consideradas equivalentes, com igual nível de dificuldade entre si e uma lista foi considerada semelhante, podendo ser utilizada como treino para aplicação do teste na bateria audiológica. As listas validadas não sofreram influência segundo o lado da orelha e escolaridade.

ABSTRACT Purpose Develop new lists of monosyllables for conducting logoaudiometric tests in Portuguese, perform content validation, considering ear side and education and check the equivalence between the lists. Methods Were selected 125 monosyllables with different syllabic structures, which were submitted to the content validation process, which included judgment on familiarity, organization of lists, recording of material and auditory recognition. After content validation, the monosyllable lists were subjected to equivalence research, in order to obtain evidence of reliability for the proposed test instrument. Results Five lists with 25 monosyllables were elaborated and analyzed for content, of these, four lists were validated. There was no statistically significant difference between the responses obtained in the right and left ears. The education of the subjects did not influence the recognition of words. As for the equivalence search, it was found that two lists were equivalent, one not equivalent, but similar and one list was different from the others, and then excluded. Conclusion Two monosyllable lists were validated for content and considered equivalent, with the same level of difficulty between them, and one list was considered similar, which can be used as training to apply the test on the audiological battery. The validated lists were not influenced by ear and education.

Resumo Introdução Entre os testes de processamento auditivo aplicados atualmente, os testes de escuta dicótica têm sido amplamente usados, uma vez que permitem investigar a função hemisférica e inter-hemisférica e suas respectivas habilidades, para processar a informação auditiva recebida. Objetivo Obter medidas de referência de normalidade com o novo teste dicótico de reconhecimento de sentenças em indivíduos adultos, destros, com audição normal. Método Estudo quantitativo, observacional, de corte transversal. Foram avaliados 72 indivíduos, entre 19 e 44 anos, destros, com audição normal, sem queixa auditiva. O teste dicótico de reconhecimento de sentenças é constituído por diferentes listas de sentenças, que foram combinadas duas a duas e apresentadas ao mesmo tempo, por meio de fones auriculares em ambas as orelhas, a 50 dB nível de sensação. O teste foi aplicado em quatro etapas: treino das 3 etapas, atenção livre, atenção direcionada direita e esquerda, avaliou assim diferentes habilidades auditivas. Resultados Na tarefa de atenção livre, as porcentagens médias de acertos na orelha direita foram de 93,59% e na orelha esquerda de 86,06%, com diferença estatisticamente significante entre as orelhas, com vantagem para a orelha direita. Na tarefa de atenção direcionada, as porcentagens médias de acertos foram de 99,37% na orelha direita e de 98,8% na orelha esquerda, sem diferença estatística entre as orelhas. Conclusão Sugere-se como referência de normalidade na etapa de atenção livre, para a orelha direita, 90% e 100% de acertos e para a orelha esquerda, de 80% a 100%. Quando houver assimetria entre as orelhas, são esperadas diferenças de até 20%, com vantagem para a orelha direita. Para a etapa de atenção direcionada os valores de referência de normalidade esperados são de 100% para a orelha direita e para a orelha esquerda, sem assimetria entre as orelhas, mas se ocorrer é esperada diferença entre as orelhas de 10%, com vantagem para a orelha direita.

Abstract Introduction Among the currently-applied auditory processing tests, dichotic listening tests have been widely used, since they allow investigating the hemispheric and inter-hemispheric function and their respective skills to process the received auditory information. Objective To obtain normality reference measures with the new dichotic sentence identification test in right-handed adults with normal hearing. Methods Quantitative, observational, cross-sectional study. 72 subjects were assessed, aged 19-44 years, right-handed, with normal hearing, without hearing complaints. The dichotic sentence identification test consists of different lists of sentences, which were combined two by two and presented at the same time, using earphones in both ears, at 50 dB Sensation Level. The test was applied in four stages: training of the 3 stages, free attention, right and left directed attention, thus evaluating different auditory skills. Results In the free attention task, the average percentage of correct answers in the right ear was 93.59% and in the left ear 86.06%, with a statistically significant difference between the ears, with an advantage for the right ear. In the directed attention task, the average percentage of correct answers was 99.37% in the right ear and 98.8% in the left ear, with no statistical difference between the ears. Conclusion It is suggested, as a normality reference for the stage of free attention, 90%-100% for correct answers for the right ear and for the left ear, from 80% to 100%. When there is asymmetry between the ears, differences of up to 20% are expected, with an advantage for the right ear For the directed attention stage, the expected normality reference values are 100% for the right ear and for the left ear, with no asymmetry between the ears; however, if it occurs, a difference of 10% is expected between the ears, with an advantage for the right ear.

RESUMO Objetivo: investigar a variabilidade do Teste Dicótico de Sentenças por meio do teste e reteste em indivíduos normo-ouvintes. Método: foram avaliados 36 indivíduos na faixa etária de 19 a 44 anos, destros e com limiares auditivos dentro da normalidade. Realizou-se a avaliação audiológica básica e aplicação dos Testes Dicótico de Dígitos e Dicótico de Sentenças. Teste e reteste foram realizados em duas sessões, com intervalo de 30 a 40 dias, no mesmo turno. Resultados: na tarefa de integração: houve vantagem da orelha direita em ambas as sessões de avaliação; não houve diferença significante entre as medidas obtidas na orelha direita, nas duas sessões de avaliação, enquanto na orelha esquerda foi constatada diferença significante. Na análise das diferenças por orelhas entre teste e reteste, verificou-se que 64% dos indivíduos mantiveram o mesmo resultado na orelha direita; já na esquerda, apenas 36% dos indivíduos mantiveram o mesmo resultado em ambas as etapas e 44% apresentaram diferença de 10% entre as duas avaliações. Observou-se correlação positiva moderada tanto para a orelha direita (r = 0,420) quanto para a esquerda (r = 0,550) com tendência de melhora dos escores no reteste. Na tarefa de separação, houve pequena variabilidade apenas na orelha esquerda, também com melhora dos escores no reteste. Conclusão: foi verificada diferença significante entre as medidas obtidas no teste e reteste apenas na tarefa de integração na orelha esquerda, porém houve correlação positiva moderada entre as medidas obtidas nas duas sessões de avaliação, mostrando tendência de melhora dos escores na segunda sessão de avaliação.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to investigate the variability of the Dichotic Sentence Test through the test and retest in normal-hearing adults. Method: We evaluated thirty-six individuals aged 19 to 44 years old, right-handed and with normal hearing thresholds. We performed the basic audiological evaluation and then we applied the Dichotic Digit Test and Dichotic Sentence Test. The test and retest had two sessions, with an interval from 30 to 40 days, in the same shift. Results: In the integration task, there was an advantage of the right ear in both evaluation sessions. There was no significant difference between the measures obtained in the right ear in the two evaluation sessions, while in the left ear, we found a significant difference. In the analysis of the differences in ears between the test and the retest, we found that 64% of the individuals kept the same result in the right ear, while in the left one, only 36% of the individuals kept the same result in both stages and 44% showed a 10% difference between the two evaluations. We observed moderate positive correlation for both the right ear (r=0.420) and the left ear (r=0.550), with a tendency to improve retest scores. In the separation task, there was a small variability only in the left ear, also with improved retest scores. Conclusion: There was a significant difference between the measures obtained in the test and retest only in the integration task in the left ear, but there was a moderate positive correlation between the measures obtained in the two evaluation sessions, showing a tendency to improve scores in the second evaluation session.

RESUMOObjetivo: Comparar a habilidade de reconhecimento de sentenças no silêncio e no ruído em indivíduos normo-ouvintes monolíngues, falantes do português brasileiro e, bilíngues, falantes do português brasileiro e do alemão, e do português brasileiro e italiano, bem como analisar a influência do período de aquisição da segunda língua no desempenho dos bilíngues. Método Participaram da pesquisa 87 indivíduos entre a faixa etária de 18 e 55 anos de idade, normo-ouvintes, os quais foram distribuídos em: grupo controle, composto de 30 monolíngues falantes do português brasileiro; grupo estudo alemão, 31 bilíngues simultâneos falantes do português e do alemão como segunda língua; grupo estudo italiano, formado por 26 bilíngues sucessivos, falantes do português e do italiano como segunda língua. Por meio do teste Listas de Sentenças em Português Brasileiro, foram obtidos seus Limiares de Reconhecimento de Sentenças no Silêncio e no Ruído. Resultados No silêncio, não houve diferenças estatisticamente significantes de desempenho tanto quando comparados os indivíduos bilíngues e monolíngues como quando comparados os grupos bilíngues. Por sua vez, no ruído, verificou-se diferença significante entre os grupos bilíngues, em relação ao monolíngue. Entretanto, quando comparado o desempenho dos grupos bilíngues, não se observou diferença significante entre eles. Conclusão O bilinguismo influenciou positivamente o desenvolvimento de habilidades auditivas, que repercutiram em desempenhos superiores dos bilíngues no reconhecimento de fala na presença de ruído, e o período de aquisição da segunda língua não influenciou o desempenho dos bilíngues.

ABSTRACT Purpose To compare the ability to recognize sentences in silence and in noise in monolingual normal-hearing Brazilian Portuguese speakers, and bilingual speakers of Brazilian Portuguese and German, and bilingual speakers of Brazilian Portuguese and Italian, as well as to analyze the influence of age of second language acquisition on the performance of bilinguals. Methods 87 normal-hearing individuals aged between 18 and 55 years participated of this research. They were categorized into: Control Group, composed by 30 monolingual Brazilian Portuguese speakers; German Research Group, 31 simultaneous bilingual native speakers of Portuguese and speakers of German as a second language and; Italian Research Group, consisting of 26 successive bilinguals, native speakers of Portuguese and speakers of Italian as a second language. The Sentence List Test in Brazilian Portuguese was used to measure their Sentence Recognition Thresholds in Silence and Noise. Results In silence, there were no statistically significant differences in performance when comparing the bilingual to the monolingual individuals, and when comparing the bilingual speakers among themselves. On the other hand, in noise, there was a significant difference between the bilingual groups and the monolingual one. However, there were no significant differences between the bilingual groups when their performance was compared. Conclusion Bilingualism positively influenced the development of language and listening skills, which led the bilinguals to outperform in speech recognition in the presence of noise. Also, the period of a second language acquisition did not influence bilingual performance.

RESUMO Objetivo: investigar o reconhecimento de fala no silêncio e no ruído de sujeitos com perda auditiva unilateral, sem e com prótese auditiva, e analisar o benefício, autopercepção do desempenho funcional, satisfação e o uso de prótese auditiva nestes sujeitos. Métodos: foram avaliados 11 adultos, com perda auditiva unilateral, do tipo mista ou neurossensorial, de graus leve a severo. O reconhecimento de fala foi avaliado por meio do teste Listas de Sentenças em Português Brasileiro; o desempenho funcional da audição foi avaliado por meio do questionário Speech Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale; a satisfação por meio do Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life, ambos em português brasileiro; e para avaliação do uso da prótese auditiva foi analisado o relato do paciente. Resultados: a adaptação de prótese auditiva proporcionou benefício no reconhecimento de fala em todas as posições avaliadas, no silêncio e no ruído. Os sujeitos não referiram grandes limitações nas atividades de comunicação com a utilização da prótese auditiva. Demonstraram-se satisfeitos com o uso da amplificação sonora. A maioria dos sujeitos não faz uso efetivo da prótese auditiva. A descontinuidade do uso pode ser justificada pela dificuldade de perceber a restrição de participação causada pela perda auditiva, assim como o benefício da prótese, além da preocupação com os custos com as pilhas e aspectos estéticos. Conclusão: apesar de apresentarem benefício no reconhecimento de fala, no silêncio e no ruído e satisfação com a amplificação sonora, a maioria dos sujeitos com perda auditiva unilateral não faz uso efetivo da prótese auditiva.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to investigate speech recognition in silence and in noise in subjects with unilateral hearing loss with and without hearing aids, and to analyze the benefit, self-perception of functional performance, satisfaction and the use of hearing aids in these subjects. Methods: eleven adults with unilateral, mixed and sensorineural, mild to severe hearing loss participated in this study. Speech recognition was evaluated by the Brazilian Portuguese sentences lists test; functional performance of the hearing was assessed by using the Speech Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale questionnaire; satisfaction was assessed by the Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life questionnaire, both in Brazilian Portuguese; and to assess the use of hearing aids, the patient's report was analyzed. Results: the adaptation of hearing aids provided benefits in speech recognition in all positions evaluated, both in silence and in noise. The subjects did not report major limitations in communication activities with the use of hearing aids. They were satisfied with the use of sound amplification. Most of the subjects did not use hearing aids, effectively. The discontinuity of hearing aids use can be justified by the difficulty on perceiving participation’s restriction caused by hearing loss, as well as the benefit of the hearing aid, besides the concern with batteries’ costs and aesthetic aspects. Conclusion: although showing benefits in speech recognition, in silence and in noise, and satisfaction with sound amplification, most subjects with unilateral hearing loss do not effectively use hearing aids.

RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar e comparar as habilidades cognitivas e auditiva em indivíduos normo-ouvintes monolíngues e bilíngues. Métodos: a amostra foi composta por 21 indivíduos normo-ouvintes, com idade entre 18 e 25 anos, distribuídos em: Grupo Controle, formado por oito monolíngues falantes da Língua Portuguesa Brasileira e Grupo Estudo, composto por 13 bilíngues falantes da língua Portuguesa Brasileira e das línguas Alemã ou Italiana. Os indivíduos foram submetidos às avaliações audiológicas básicas e à pesquisa das habilidades cognitivas e auditiva de figura-fundo, por meio dos testes BPR-5 e SSW respectivamente. Resultados: na avaliação das habilidades cognitivas, verificou-se melhor desempenho da função cognitiva geral, com diferença estatisticamente significante, a favor dos bilíngues, assim como nas habilidades cognitivas de raciocínio verbal, espacial e mecânico. Na habilidade auditiva de figura- fundo, também se obteve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os grupos estudados, com os bilíngues apresentando melhor desempenho. Conclusões: com base nos grupos estudados observou-se que a vivência bilíngue proporcionou melhor desempenho na função cognitiva geral, em relação aos monolíngues, assim como nas capacidades cognitivas específicas de raciocínio verbal, espacial e mecânico e na habilidade auditiva de figura-fundo.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to evaluate and compare cognitive and auditory abilities in normally hearing monolingual and bilingual individuals. Methods: the sample consisted of 21 normally hearing individuals ranging in age between 18 and 25 years, divided into a control group of eight monolingual speakers of Brazilian Portuguese and a study group composed of 13 bilingual speakers of Brazilian Portuguese and German or Italian. The individuals underwent basic audiological assessments as well as assessments of cognitive and auditory figure-background abilities with the BPR-5 and SSW tests, respectively. Results: the assessment of cognitive abilities showed that bilinguals had a better performance for the general cognitive function, with a statistically significant difference, as well as for cognitive abilities of verbal, spatial and mechanical reasoning. Also, for auditory figure-background abilities, there was a statistically significant difference between the study groups, with bilinguals showing a better performance. Conclusions: based on the study groups, it was found that the bilingual subjects had a better performance of their general cognitive function, as compared with monolingual speakers, as well as in their specific cognitive abilities of verbal, spatial and mechanical reasoning, and in the auditory figure-background abilities.

RESUMO Objetivo Compor um banco de palavras dissilábicas para elaborar, realizar a validação de conteúdo, obter evidências de fidedignidade e gravar digitalmente listas de dissílabos equivalentes, para a realização do Índice Percentual de Reconhecimento de Fala (IPRF), a fim de complementar a bateria de materiais de fala disponíveis para essa avaliação. Métodos Foram selecionados vocábulos dissilábicos, paroxítonos, substantivos, os quais foram submetidos ao processo de validação de conteúdo, que abrangeu o julgamento quanto à familiaridade, adequação e reconhecimento auditivo, por juízes especialistas e não especialistas. Foram elaboradas listas de dissílabos, com 25 palavras em cada uma, a partir dos vocábulos resultantes da validação de conteúdo, e realizada a pesquisa de equivalência dessas listas, a fim de obter evidências de fidedignidade para o novo instrumento de teste proposto. Resultados A primeira versão do banco de palavras foi composta por 442 dissílabos. Destes, 198 foram considerados familiares pela maioria dos juízes, sendo que 176 foram julgados como adequados. Após o reconhecimento auditivo, foram mantidos, no banco de palavras, 172 vocábulos, distribuídos em seis listas, com 25 palavras em cada uma. Dentre estas listas, apenas uma diferiu das demais e cinco foram consideradas equivalentes, denominadas LD-A, LD-B, LD-C, LD-D e LD-E, gravadas em formato digital em Compact Disc. Conclusão Cinco listas de dissílabos elaboradas foram consideradas equivalentes, nomeadas de listas LD-A, LD-B, LD-C, LD-D e LD-E, disponibilizadas em gravação digital, com evidências satisfatórias de validade e confiabilidade, para complementar a bateria de materiais de fala disponíveis para a realização do IPRF.

ABSTRACT Purpose To compose a bank of dissyllabic words to develop equivalent disyllabic lists, perform content validation, obtain evidence of reliability and digitally record these lists to determine the Speech Recognition Percentage Index (SRPI) in order to complement the set of materials available for this evaluation. Methods We used disyllabic, paroxytone nouns, which were submitted to content validation, which included assessment of familiarity, appropriateness and auditory recognition by expert and non-expert raters. Lists of disyllabic words (with 25 words each) were developed from the words selected after content validation, and the equivalence search of these lists was carried out to collect evidence of reliability for the proposed new test instrument. Results The first version of the word bank was composed of 442 disyllables; 198 of them were considered to be familiar by most raters, and 176 were deemed as appropriate; after auditory recognition, 172 words were kept in the word bank, distributed into six lists, with 25 words in each one. Among these lists, only one differed from the others while the other five were considered to be equivalent, and were named LD-A, LD-B, LD-C, LD-D and LD-E, and recorded in digital format onto a Compact Disc. Conclusion Five lists of disyllabic words were considered as equivalent, named LD-A, LD-B, LD-C, LD-D and LD-E lists. They were digitally recorded and made available with satisfactory evidence of validity and reliability, to complement the set of available speech materials for SRPI assessment.

RESUMO Introdução Estímulos de fala são usados como parte da avaliação audiológica básica, para análise do reconhecimento de fala, e materiais validados são necessários para este fim. Objetivo Realizar validação de construto de novas listas de monossílabos, para uso na avaliação logoaudiométrica. Métodos Pesquisou-se o Índice Percentual de Reconhecimento de Fala, com dois materiais: duas novas listas de monossílabos, validadas quanto ao conteúdo e consideradas equivalentes e a lista de Pen e Mangabeira-Albernaz (1973), considerada padrão-ouro na rotina clínica da avaliação logoaudiométrica, no Brasil. As novas listas foram apresentadas na forma gravada e a segunda, à viva voz, pelo mesmo locutor. Foram selecionados, por meio de um banco de dados, indivíduos residentes no município onde a pesquisa foi realizada e que possuíam perda auditiva de grau moderado a moderadamente severo em, pelo menos, uma das orelhas. Participaram 20 sujeitos destros, com idades entre 18 e 44 anos, com perda auditiva do tipo neurossensorial, mista ou condutiva. Foram correlacionados os escores obtidos, resultantes da aplicação das listas. Os dados foram analisados por orelha, sendo então, 18 orelhas direitas e 18 orelhas esquerdas. Resultados Não houve diferença significativa entre as orelhas direita e esquerda. Observou-se forte correlação entre as novas listas previamente desenvolvidas para esta pesquisa e a lista de Pen e Mangabeira-Albernaz, nos diferentes grupos de perda auditiva. Ao comparar os pares de escores obtidos, também houve forte correlação linear entre as novas listas e a lista de Pen e Mangabeira-Albernaz. Conclusão As novas listas de monossílabos foram validadas, em relação ao construto.

ABSTRACT Introduction Speech stimuli are used as part of basic audiological assessment for speech recognition analysis, and validated materials are required for this purpose. Purpose To perform construct validation of new lists of monosyllables for speech audiometry assessment. Methods The speech recognition percentage index was determined with two materials: two new lists of monosyllables, which were validated for content and considered to be equivalent, and the list of Pen and Mangabeira-Albernaz (1973), considered as the gold standard in the clinical routine of speech audiometry assessment in Brazil. The former were presented as recorded material and the latter, via monitored live voice, by the same speaker. Individuals living in the same city where the research was conducted and who had moderate to moderately severe hearing loss in at least one ear were selected from a database. Twenty right-handed subjects - aged between 18 and 44, with mixed or conductive and sensorineural hearing loss - participated in this research. The scores resulting from the application of these lists were correlated. Data were analyzed by ear; there was a total of 18 right ears and 18 left ears. Results There was no statistically significant difference between the right and left ears. There was a strong correlation between the new lists previously developed for this research and the list of Pen and Mangabeira-Albernaz in different hearing loss groups. When comparing the pairs of resulting scores, there was also a strong linear correlation between the new lists and the list of Pen and Mangabeira-Albernaz. Conclusion The new monosyllable lists were validated for the construct.

RESUMO Objetivo: caracterizar os hábitos e queixas auditivas de adolescentes normoouvintes, usuários de estéreos pessoais e relacioná-los com a atividade do sistema olivococlear medial. Métodos: foram avaliados 21 indivíduos, com idades entre 12 e 19 anos, com audição normal. Todos responderam a um questionário fechado referente ao comportamento auditivo e a queixa de zumbido e realizaram avaliação audiológica: Audiometria, Imitanciometria, Emissões Otoacústicas Evocadas Transientes e Efeito de Supressão. Resultados: todos os participantes do estudo ficam expostos à música, a maioria, menos de duas horas diárias. Observou-se a presença do efeito de supressão na orelha direita em 66,67% e na esquerda em 61,90% dos adolescentes. Não foi encontrada associação significante entre a presença do efeito de supressão entre as orelhas, os gêneros e entre tempos de exposição sonora diária e ausência do efeito de supressão. Parte da amostra dos adolescentes referiu ter zumbido, destes, a maioria referiu zumbido em ambas as orelhas. Houve associação significante entre a exposição sonora diária e a presença de zumbido e entre a ausência do efeito de supressão da orelha direita e a presença de zumbido. Conclusão: os adolescentes pesquisados referiram ouvir música diariamente, menos de duas horas diárias. A maioria apresentou efeito de supressão. Houve associação entre queixa de zumbido e ausência do efeito de supressão na orelha direita. Além disso, quanto maior o tempo de exposição sonora maior também a presença de queixa de zumbido nestes adolescentes.

ABSTRACT Purpose: characterize the habits and hearing complaints of teenagers with normal hearing users of personal stereos and connect them with the activity of the medial olivocochlear system. Methods: 21 subjects were assessed (between 12 and 19 years) with normal hearing. They answered a closed questionnaire concerning the auditory behavior and complaining of tinnitus and accomplished hearing evaluation: Audiometry, immittance, transient evoked otoacoustic emissions and Suppression Effect. Results: all participants of the study get exposed to music, the most them less than two daily hours. It was observed the presence of the suppression effect in the right ear in 66,67% and in the left ear in 61,90% of teenagers. Was not found significant association among the presence of the suppression effect between the ears, the genders, times daily noise exposure and absence of suppression effect. The sample of the teenagers reported having tinnitus, these, most reported tinnitus in both ears. Had significant association between the daily noise exposure and the presence of tinnitus and between the absence of the suppression effect of right ear and the presence of tinnitus. Conclusion: all the teenagers researched reported listen to music every day, the most them less than two hours per day. The most of teenagers presented suppression effect. The tinnitus complaint can be associated with the absence of suppression effect in the right ear. In addition, like longer the time of sound exposure longer also the presence of tinnitus complaint in these adolescents.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar a relação dos resultados de testes que avaliam habilidades auditivas com o desempenho cognitivo, além de verificar a sua influência na adaptação de próteses auditivas em população idosa. Métodos Doze idosos com perda auditiva bilateral simétrica de grau leve a moderado foram avaliados cognitivamente, por meio da bateria Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease (CERAD) e quanto às habilidades auditivas de resolução e ordenação temporal, além de separação e integração binaural, por meio dos testes Random Gap Detection Test, Testes Padrão de Duração e de Frequência e Teste Dicótico de Dígitos, antes da adaptação de próteses auditivas. Após três meses, as habilidades auditivas foram novamente avaliadas e então relacionou-se estes desempenhos àqueles obtidos nas avaliações cognitivas. Resultados As habilidades auditivas de ordenação e resolução temporal tiveram relação com algumas avaliações cognitivas. A diferença de desempenho nas habilidades auditivas de ordenação e resolução temporal, além de integração binaural, após aclimatização, teve relação inversa com algumas avaliações cognitivas. Conclusão Idosos apresentaram melhor desempenho nas habilidades de ordenação e resolução temporal auditiva, quanto melhor seu desempenho em alguns testes cognitivos. Já quando analisada a diferença de desempenho nas habilidades auditivas antes e três meses depois da adaptação de próteses auditivas, aqueles com pior desempenho cognitivo foram os que evidenciaram melhora acentuada, demonstrando que, mesmo com prejuízo cognitivo, apresentam possibilidade de estimulação da plasticidade neural.

ABSTRACT Purpose To determine if auditory skills test results correlated with cognitive performance and evaluate their influence on hearing aid fittings in the elderly population. Methods This study was carried out with 12 hearing-impaired individuals over 60 years of age. They were cognitively assessed with the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease (CERAD) battery assessment. The instruments used to evaluate resolution and temporal ordering, as well as separation and binaural integration, were the Random Gap Detection Test, Duration Pattern Sequence and Pitch Pattern Sequence, and Dichotic Digits Tests. Their auditory abilities were evaluated before and three months after the hearing aid fittings. The data were statistically correlated to the data obtained from the cognitive assessments. Results Ordering and temporal resolution were related to some cognitive assessments. The difference in some auditory abilities performance of temporal ordering and temporal resolution after the acclimatization period was inversely related to some cognitive assessments. Conclusion In the elderly the better the performance on the auditory temporal skills, the better the cognitive test results. However, when analyzing the difference in performance between the auditory abilities before and after the hearing aid fittings, the patients with the worst cognitive performance showed the most improvement. This demonstrates that there is a possibility of neural plasticity stimulation, even in those with cognitive impairment.

RESUMO Objetivo Desenvolver o teste Listas de Sentenças Dicóticas em Português Brasileiro, verificar sua aplicabilidade e propor um protocolo de aplicação para avaliação do processamento auditivo. Métodos As listas de frases foram extraídas do material original, submetidas a uma análise criteriosa e ao processo de adaptação, para compor o novo teste. Para formar pares de frases com duração mais aproximada possível, foi analisado estatisticamente o tempo de duração de cada sentença, dentro de uma mesma lista e entre listas. Estas foram combinadas em ordem crescente de duração, dentro de cada lista, e realizadas as combinações das listas entre si, de acordo com a duração das sentenças, gerando 42 conjuntos distintos de listas. Em seguida, o teste foi aplicado em 42 indivíduos normo-ouvintes. Os indivíduos foram instruídos sobre a forma de resposta, devendo repetir, inicialmente, as sentenças de ambas as orelhas (atenção dividida entre orelha direita e esquerda), em seguida, as frases da orelha direita (atenção direcionada para a orelha direita) e, finalmente, as da orelha esquerda (atenção direcionada para a orelha esquerda). Resultados O novo material ficou composto da seguinte forma: faixa 1, tom puro de calibração; faixa 2, lista 1A modificada e faixas 3 a 44, as 42 possibilidades de combinação entre as listas. Após a realização do teste, foi sugerido um protocolo de aplicação. Conclusão O teste Listas de Sentenças Dicóticas em Português Brasileiro mostrou-se um instrumento passível de ser utilizado em adultos e, sendo assim, foi proposto um protocolo com duas diferentes combinações de listas e sequências de apresentação, para avaliação do processamento auditivo.

ABSTRACT Purpose To develop Brazilian Portuguese Dichotic Sentence List Test, check its applicability and propose an application protocol for auditory processing assessment. Methods The lists of sentences were taken from the original material, analyzed in detailed and adapted to form the new test. To compose pairs of sentences with as much of the same duration as possible, the duration of each sentence was statistically analyzed within the same list and among lists. The lists were combined in increasing order of length, within each list; and combinations of the lists were formed according to the length of sentences, resulting in 42 different sets of lists. Then, the test was performed with 42 normal hearing individuals. Individuals were instructed on how to answer: initially, they should repeat the sentences presented to both ears (attention divided between the right and the left ears). Then, the steps for the right ear phrases (attention directed to the right ear), and finally for the left ear (attention directed to the left ear) were performed. Results The new material was composed as follows: track 1, pure tone calibration; track 2, modified 1A list; and tracks 3 to 44, the 42 possible combinations among the lists. After the test was applied, an application protocol was suggested. Conclusion The Brazilian Portuguese Dichotic Sentence List Test was developed and proved to be an instrument that can be used in adults. Therefore, a protocol was proposed with two different combinations of lists and presentation sequence for auditory processing assessment.

RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar o reconhecimento de fala no ruído em idosos, novos usuários de próteses auditivas, com microfone direcional e redutor de ruído e verificar qual recurso proporciona melhor inteligibilidade de fala. Métodos Participaram 36 indivíduos, entre 60 e 87 anos de idade, com perda auditiva neurossensorial de grau leve a moderadamente severo. Foi aplicado o teste Listas de Sentenças em Português Brasileiro, em campo sonoro, obtendo os Índices Percentuais de Reconhecimento de Sentenças no Ruído (IPRSR) com próteses auditivas, com quatro diferentes ajustes: microfone omnidirecional (MO); redutor de ruído e microfone omnidirecional (RR+MO); microfone direcional (MD); e redutor de ruído e microfone direcional (RR+MD). Resultados Quando fala e ruído incidiram a 0º/0º azimute, a mediana dos escores de acertos dos IPRSR foi 76,74% com o uso do MO; 84,95% com RR+MO; 84,40% com MD e 86,63% com RR+MD. Ao comparar os resultados, houve diferenças entre MO e MD; MO e RR+MD; RR+MO e MD; RR+MO e RR+MD. Quando o ruído incidiu a 0º/180º azimute, a mediana dos IPRSR foi de 77,4% com o uso do MO; 83,79% com RR+MO; 89,46% com MD e 91,99 com RR+MD. Ao comprar os resultados, houve diferenças entre os desempenhos com o MO e MD; MO e RR+MD; RR+MO e MD; RR+MO e RR+MD. Conclusão Foram observados melhores resultados com o uso do RR e do MD nas duas situações de avaliação, porém, na situação com ruído a 0º/180º azimute o MD proporcionou um desempenho ainda mais satisfatório.

ABSTRACT Purpose To evaluate speech recognition in noise on elderly, new users of hearing aids with directional microphones and noise reduction, and check which feature provides better speech intelligibility. Methods The participants were 36 individuals between 60 and 87 years old with sensorineural hearing loss from mild to moderately severe. The Sentence List test in Brazilian Portuguese was applied, in sound field, obtaining the Sentence Recognition in Noise Percentage Rates (SRNPR) with hearing aids, with four different settings: omnidirectional microphone (OM); noise reduction and omnidirectional microphone (NR + OM); directional microphone (DM); and the noise reduction and directional microphone (NR + DM). Results When speech and noise focused at 0°/0° azimuth, SRNPR median scores were 76.74% with the use of OM; 84.95% with NR + OM; 84.40% with DM and 86.63% with NR + DM. When comparing results, there were differences between OM x DM; OM x NR + DM; NR + OM and DM; NR+ OM and NR+ DM. When noise focused at 0°/180° azimuth, the SRNPR median were 77.4% with the use of OM; 83.79% with NR + OM; 89.46% with DM and 91.9 with NR + DM. When comparing results, there were differences between the performances with OM e DM; OM and NR + DM; NR + OM and DM; and NR + OM and NR + DM. Conclusion Better results were found with the use of NR and DM in both situations of assessment, however, in the situation with noise at 0°/180° azimuth the DM provided a more satisfactory performance.

RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar o reconhecimento de fala, considerando a previsibilidade da palavra a partir de um teste elaborado. Métodos Foi realizada anamnese, testes de rastreio de comprometimento cognitivo e depressão e avaliação audiológica convencional. Foi desenvolvido um Teste de Reconhecimento de Fala utilizando Frases de Previsibilidade Alta e Baixa e aplicado a 36 idosos (G1 e G3 - grupos sem perda auditiva até 4 kHz e G2 e G4 - grupos com perda auditiva neurossensorial de grau leve a moderado). Dois grupos realizaram o teste no silêncio e com ruído (relação sinal/ruído +5 dB) e os outros dois grupos somente com ruído (relações +5 dB e 0 dB). Resultados O teste de reconhecimento de fala revelou, de modo geral, maior pontuação nas frases de previsibilidade alta e melhores desempenhos para os grupos sem perda auditiva. No silêncio, os idosos sem e com perda auditiva obtiveram pontuação máxima igual e as menores pontuações ocorreram na condição de ruído mais intenso. O benefício da previsibilidade foi positivo para os grupos 1, 2 e 3. O grupo 4 apresentou comportamento variado quanto ao uso da previsibilidade (ora positivo, ora negativo). Conclusão Com a população de idosos avaliados e as diferenças observadas em um dos grupos considerados, não foi possível compreender, com exatidão, como os idosos se beneficiam do apoio da previsibilidade. A perda auditiva e a presença do ruído influenciaram negativamente o desempenho no teste. Faz-se necessária a continuidade desta linha de pesquisa para determinar a validade do material elaborado.

ABSTRACT Purpose evaluation of the speech recognition concerning the word predictability based on a developed test. Methods 1 Results In general, Speech recognition test showed a higher score in the high predictability sentences and better performance for groups without hearing loss. In the silence, elderly with and without hearing loss have also obtained high scores and the lowest scores were achieved in situations with most intense noise. The benefit of predictability was positive for groups 1, 2 and 3. Group 4 showed a different behavior towards the use of predictability (sometimes positive or negative). Conclusion For the elderly evaluated and the differences observed in one of the groups, it was not possible to precisely determine how the elderly benefit from predictability. The hearing loss and the noise have negatively influenced the test performance. Further researches in the area are necessary to confirm the validity of the material produced.

RESUMO: O distúrbio do processamento auditivo refere-se incapacidade do sistema auditivo central em captar e interpretar as informações sonoras oriundas do ambiente externo. Para minimizar ou sanar os efeitos deste distúrbio no cotidiano dos sujeitos, é indicado terapia com treinamento auditivo. O objetivo deste estudo foi apresentar uma revisão de literatura sobre o uso de software no treinamento de habilidades auditivas em crianças. Como estratégia de pesquisa realizou-se busca em bases de dados: Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SCIELO), Sistema da Literatura Latino-Americana em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE e PUBMED) e Índice Bibliográfico Espanhol de Ciência da Saúde (IBECS) considerando estudos publicados em 2008 a 2014, utilizando as palavras-chave: percepção auditiva; estimulação acústica; software; crianças. Para inclusão, os artigos deveriam possuir publicação posterior a 2008 e treinamento auditivo computadorizado como forma de intervenção terapêutica em crianças, independente da patologia e/ou distúrbio envolvida, idioma em inglês português ou espanhol. Nos estudos realizados nos últimos seis anos, o uso de software no treinamento auditivo em crianças tem se mostrado uma ferramenta eficaz. Os artigos analisados mostraram que o uso de programas computadorizado permite engajamento e motivação, além da reabilitação das habilidades auditivas alteradas.

ABSTRACT: The auditory processing disorder refers to the inability of the central auditory system to capture and interpret sound information from the external environment. To minimize or to remedy the effects of this disorder in daily life of the subjects is indicated therapy with auditory training. The aim of this study was to present a literature review on the use of software in the training of auditory skills in children. Have been take one search in databases: Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SCIELO), Sistema da Literatura Latino-Americana em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE e PUBMED) and Índice Bibliográfico Espanhol de Ciência da Saúde (IBECS). The research was carried out from 2008 to 2014, using the keywords: auditory perception; acoustic stimulation; Software; children. Selection criteria: Publication performed after 2008 and using computerized auditory training as a means of therapeutic intervention in children independent of the condition and/or disorder involved, in Portuguese or Spanish or English. According to research in the last six years, the use of software in the auditory training in children has been shown to be an effective tool. The articles analyzed demonstrate that the use of computer programs allows engagement and motivation, besides the rehabilitation of the auditory skills.
