ABSTRACT Background: Neotropical species lack autecological information. Among these, are phenological studies, which help to understand forest dynamics and provide important contributions to the collection, restoration, and conservation programs. This research aimed to characterize the vegetative and reproductive phenological behavior of neotropical species Geoffroea spinosa Jacq. in a seasonally dry tropical forest, as well as to verify if there is a correlation between phenophases and environmental parameters. Twenty individuals were accompanied monthly for two years, to detect and tally the presence of floral buds, flowers, immature fruits, ripe fruits, leaf emergence, presence of mature leaves, and defoliation. A semi-quantitative evaluation was carried out with the Fournier method. Results: The results showed that the population had synchrony of reproductive events, with more than 50% of the individuals blooming and fruiting during the same time interval. Furthermore, the circular statistical test indicated a high seasonality for reproductive events (r ≥ 0.50 and p < 0.001). Among the vegetative events, all were classified as non-seasonal (r < 0.5). G. spinosa, showed a significant correlation (p ≤ 0.05) for all meteorological variables evaluated. Conclusion: The reproductive phenophases of G. spinosa showed strongly seasonal behavior, unlike vegetative events. the period between mid-February and the end of March was the most propitious for fruit collection. No seasonality was observed for the vegetative events. The species proved to be sensitive to El niño conditions. Follow-up phenological studies associated with meteorological variables are important for a better understanding of the dynamics of vegetative behavior in response to climate change.

Abstract To characterize the floristic composition and horizontal structure of the National Forest of Açú from 2015 to 2019, 20 permanent plots of 400 m² were allocated, and all woody individuals with a diameter at breast height (CBH) ≥ 2 cm were measured on both occasions. Between 2015 and 2019, there was an increase in floristic richness from 23 to 34 species, especially Cenostigma pyramidale and Handroanthus impetiginosus due to their high phytosociological values. Although an 8.7% reduction in the number of individuals in the 4.4 cm class center was observed between the respective years, there was a volumetric increase of 4.85 m³ ha-1, that is 1.21 m³ ha-1 year-1. Changes in floristic composition, diameter distribution, and volumetry reflect the development of vegetation and part of its dynamics; indicating its state of conservation and, consequently, the achievement of the conservation objectives proposed by the Unit.

RESUMO Os modelos arquitetônicos ajudam a descrever o desenvolvimento e a organização das copas das árvores. Este conhecimento é essencial para a compreensão do desenvolvimento das árvores na floresta e pode ajudar a entender a relação evolutiva entre táxons. O trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a riqueza de modelos arquitetônicos das espécies arbóreas de uma Floresta Estacional. Os dados foram coletados a partir de observações de campo e literatura especializada. Foram encontradas 53 espécies da flora arbórea de uma Floresta Estacional Subtropical de Santa Maria - RS, distribuídas em 45 gêneros e 28 das famílias. No total, 13 diferentes modelos arquitetônicos foram reconhecidos. Os modelos com maior destaque foram Rauh, Troll, Scarrone, Roux e Massart. A complexidade arquitetural, refletida pelo elevado número de modelos descritos, se deve ao desenvolvimento do dossel no remanescente estudado. O trabalho teve um caráter pioneiro e exploratório e deve fornecer um marco para novos estudos sobre arquitetura de plantas na região subtropical do Brasil.

ABSTRACT Architectural models contribute to describe the development and the arrangement of the tree canopy. This knowledge is crucial for the understanding of the behavior of forest trees and it may also help us understand the evolutionary relationships among the taxa. This study is aimed at identifying how rich the architectural models of the arboreal species of a seasonal forest are. The data was gathered from field observations and specialized literature. It presents a list of 53 tree species from the tree flora of the Subtropical Seasonal Forest of the Santa Maria - RS, distributed in 45 genera and 28 families in the tree flora. A total of 13 different architectural models have been recognized. The most prominent models were Rauh, Troll, Scarrone, Roux and Massart. The architectural complexity, reflected by the high number of models described, is due to the development of the canopy in the rest of the study. This work had a pioneering and exploratory character and shall provide a framework for new studies on plant architecture in the subtropical region of Brazil.

RESUMO Arquitetura de uma árvore é a expressão do equilíbrio entre os processos de crescimento endógeno e as forças externas exercidas pelo ambiente. Objetivou-se delimitar e caracterizar os estratos verticais, observando a regularidade da distribuição de abundância de espécies no gradiente hipsométrico de árvores, em uma comunidade arbórea na Floresta Estacional Subtropical. A amostragem foi realizada usando catorze parcelas (20 m x 100 m), distribuídas sistematicamente, registrando os táxons e a altura total das árvores com circunferência a altura do peito ≥ 30 cm. Os estratos verticais foram delimitados a partir da análise de agrupamento (Bray-Curtis; ligação completa). Foram analisados a abundância de espécies e os modelos arquitetônicos. Realizou-se uma análise de redundância (RDA), da distribuição de abundância das espécies com os modelos arquitetônicos, nos estratos verticais delimitados. Para avaliar a distribuição de abundância nas classes de altura usou-se a análise de correspondência destendenciada (DCA). Constatou-se que a comunidade arbórea está formada por quatro estratos verticais. Ocorreu uma relação entre as espécies dos modelos arquitetônicos com a estrutura vertical da comunidade arbórea, observando, assim, a existência de estratégias de ocupação do dossel entre as espécies de acordo com o modelo arquitetural analisado. Os modelos arquitetônicos com ocupação preferencial por determinados estratos foram os de Aubréville para o sub-bosque e o de Prevost para os estratos emergentes. Outras espécies apresentaram ampla distribuição nos estratos verticais na comunidade arbórea, não possuindo distribuição preferencial na estrutura vertical. Sendo os modelos de arquitetura - Massart, Rauh, Roux, Champagnat e Troll, primordiais para a conformação arquitetural da comunidade arbórea local situada na floresta subtropical.

ABSTRACT This study proposed stipulate the limits and characterize the vertical strata, observing the regularity of the distribution of species abundance, on height gradient of the trees in forest. Data were obtained from fourteen plots (20m x 100m) distributed systematically, registering the species and the total height of the trees with circuference at breast height (CBH) ≥30 cm. The strata were defined from the cluster analysis. We conducted a redundancy analysis (RDA) between species abundance and architectural models, in the vertical strata. For the species distribution in vertical strata was used detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). The community is comprised of four vertical strata. According to the study there was a relationship between the species of the architectural models with the vertical structure of the forest, thus observing that there are strategies of canopy occupation among species according to the architectural model studied. The architectural models with preferential occupancy by certain strata were those of Aubréville for the understorey and the one of Prévost for the emergent strata. Other species presented a wide distribution in the vertical strata of the forest, having no preferential distribution in the vertical structure. Being the models of Massart, Rauh, Roux, Champagnat and Troll, essentials for conformation of the forest arquitecture.

RESUMO: O presente trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar a vegetação arbórea em nascentes de Floresta Latifoliada Subtropical e verificar a relação entre a demografia da comunidade e variáveis edáficas, como subsídios para indicação de espécies em programas de recuperação de florestas ciliares de ambientes similares. O trabalho foi realizado na Floresta Nacional de Chapecó, localizada no oeste do estado de Santa Catarina no sul do Brasil. Para isso, foram demarcadas três nascentes, onde foram alocadas 26 parcelas de 200m2 em cada uma. Todas as árvores com Diâmetro a Altura do Peito (DAP) ≥5,0cm a 1,30m de altura do solo foram mensurados. Coletaram-se amostras de solo (0 a 20cm de profundidade) nas parcelas para análise das propriedades químicas e físicas. Para relacionar a abundância das espécies com as variáveis edáficas utilizou-se a Análise de Correspondência Canônica (CCA). Foram encontradas na área de estudo, 76 espécies pertencentes a 64 gêneros de 36 famílias botânicas. As famílias Fabaceae e Myrtaceae apresentaram maior riqueza florística. As variáveis edáficas que mais influenciaram na distribuição das espécies foram a saturação por alumínio e os teores de cálcio, magnésio e potássio. Ocorreu a formação de grupos específicos de espécies indicadoras para cada nascente. As espécies designadas como generalistas são as mais recomendadas para a recomposição de nascentes com a função de preenchimento inicial da área. Enquanto as espécies raras e de baixa densidade devem ser incluídas após a recuperação inicial com a função de aumentar a diversidade.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to characterize an environmental structure in the setting of tree natural water springs in a Lower Highland Seasonal Forest, and to verify the relationship between community demography and soil variables as subsidies for species identification in riparian forest recovery programs in similar environments. The research was carried out in the National Forest of Chapecó, located in the west of the state of Santa Catarina in the southern region of Brazil. For this, three water springs were demarcated, where 26 plots of 200m² in each were allocated. All individuals with diameter at 1.30m of soil height ≥5.0cm were measured. Soil samples (0 to 20cm depth) were collected in the plots for chemical and physical analysis. To relate the abundance of the species to the edaphic variables, the Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used. A total of 76 species belonging to 64 genera of 36 botanical families were reported in the study area. The families Fabaceae and Myrtaceae presented greater floristic richness. The edaphic variables that most influenced the distribution of the species were aluminum saturation and calcium, magnesium and potassium contents. Specific groups of indicator species were formed for each water spring. The species designated as generalists are the most recommended for the initial filling and recovery of degraded springs. Further rare species and with low density must be included after the initial recovery to increase diversity.

Modelos ecológicos de distribuição de espécies (DAEs) em uma comunidade arbórea foram investigados para constatar: (i) se as variáveis ambientais são divididas de maneira estocástica e de modo similar entre as espécies; (ii) se cada espécie exaure mais da metade do nicho ecológico existente; (iii) se a comunidade arbórea possui muitas espécies com níveis intermediários de abundância e poucas espécies raras e comuns; (iv) e se, na sucessão secundária, as espécies colonizadoras tardias têm as maiores necessidades de um nicho especializado, de tal modo que são mais raras que as espécies colonizadoras iniciais. Obteve-se os dados em oito unidades amostrais de dimensões de 20m x 50m, distribuídas sistematicamente, perfazendo 0,8ha de amostra; ajustaram-se cinco modelos de DAEs (broken-stick, niche-preemption, log-normal, Zipf e Zipf-Mandelbrot) para a amostra e para as unidades amostrais; os critérios de acurácia dos modelos foram: Akaike, Bayesiano e Deviance. O modelo ecológico de DAEs que descreveu o ranking/abundância das espécies para a comunidade arbórea foi o Zipf-Mandelbrot. Os modelos ecológicos de DAEs que caracterizaram as unidades amostrais foram: niche-preemption, Zipf e Zipf-Mandelbrot. O modelo Zipf-Mandelbrot postula a colonização das espécies sob as exigências de condições ambientais prévias para o estabelecimento, assim, detecta-se uma comunidade arbórea em estágio de maturidade. Os modelos ecológicos de DAEs obtidos para as unidades amostrais, separadamente, evidenciam a disparidade da distribuição de abundância de espécies no interior da comunidade arbórea, que se interpretou como o efeito da heterogeneidade das condições e dos recursos ambientais, além de perturbações naturais, que originam um mosaico vegetacional.

Ecological Models of Species abundance distribution (SADs) of a tree community were investigated to find: (i) if environmental variables are divided stochastically and similarly between species; (ii) if each species exhausts more than half of the existing ecological niche; (iii) if the tree community has many species with intermediate levels of abundance and a few rare and common species; (iv) and if, in secondary succession, the later colonizing species have greatest needs for a specialized niche, so, they are more rare than the initial colonizers species. The data were obtained in eight sampling units with dimensions of 20m x 50m, distributed in a systematic way, totaling 0.8 ha sample; grouped in five models of SADs (broken-stick, niche-preemption, lognormal, Zipf and Zipf-Mandelbrot) for the sample of the tree community and the eight sampling units; the criteria of accuracy of the models were: Akaike, Bayesian and Deviance. The ecological model described the SADs that rank/abundance of tree species for ecological community which was the Zipf-Mandelbrot. The ecological models of SADs that characterized the eight sampling units were niche-preemption, Zipf and Zipf-Mandelbrot. The Zipf-Mandelbrot model postulates the colonization of species under the requirements of environmental preconditions for the establishment of the species, and thus detects up an arboreal community stage of maturity. The ecological models of SADs obtained for the sampling units, separately, show the disparity in the distribution of species abundance within the tree community that was interpreted as the effect of heterogeneity of conditions and environmental resources, and natural disturbances, originating a mosaic vegetation.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar padrões alométricos e feições arquiteturais de Copaifera langsdorffii em diferentes fisionomias de uma região de tensão ecológica. As fisionomias de floresta, corredor, cerrado e cerrado rupestre foram estudadas nos municípios de Lavras e Carrancas, sul de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Foram estudadas as relações entre diâmetro do tronco, altura, área da copa, grau de deflexão e deslocamento relativo da copa, sendo analisado o grau de semelhança, entre as fisionomias, por meio de regressões e análise covariância. Foi realizada uma análise de componentes principais (PCA) com variáveis biométricas coletadas e morfométricas calculadas, para caracterização de grupos mais homogêneos que evidenciem a plasticidade morfológica da espécie e suas diferentes estratégias e investimento em recursos. Como resultado das análises de regressão e covariância, encontraram-se padrões distintos, principalmente entre as fisionomias de floresta e cerrado, das fisionomias de cerrado rupestre e corredor. Um padrão de crescimento com maior investimento em altura na floresta, objetivando a garantia de espaço no dossel, e outro mais ligado ao crescimento horizontal da copa, nas fisionomias de cerrado rupestre e corredor. A PCA apresentou um gradiente de plasticidade morfológica para a espécie. A fisionomia de floresta apresentou maiores valores de altura total, largura de copa e diâmetro do tronco, e a fisionomia de cerrado rupestre mostrou valores mais elevados de grau de deflexão da copa (assimetria). O cerrado e o corredor formaram uma transição entre floresta e cerrado rupestre, no gradiente de feições morfológicas da espécie nas fisionomias.

ABSTRACT This study examined allometric patterns and architectural features of Copaifera langsdorffii, in different physiognomies in a region of ecological tension. The forest, corridor, 'cerrado', and rocky cerrado physiognomies were studied in the districts of Lavras and Carrancas, south of Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The relationships between stem diameter, height, crown area, degrees of deflection and relative displacement were analyzed, as well as the degree of similarity between the physiognomies by means of regressions and covariance analysis. The principal component analysis (PCA) was performed with the collected biometric and calculated morphometric variables to characterize the most homogeneous groups which show the morphological plasticity of the species and their different strategies and resources investment. As a result of the regression and covariance analysis, two distinct patterns were found mainly between forest and 'cerrado' physiognomies from rocky cerrado and corridor physiognomies. It was found a pattern of growth through higher investment in height in the forest, aiming to guarantee space in the canopy, and a more connected to the horizontal growth of the crown, in the rocky 'cerrado' and corridor. The PCA showed a gradient of morphological plasticity for the species. The forest physiognomy presented higher values of total height, crown width and stem diameter, while the rocky 'cerrado' physiognomy presented higher degrees of deflection of the crown (asymmetry). The 'cerrado' and the corridor formed a transition between forest and rocky 'cerrado' for the gradient of morphological features of the studied species in these physiognomies.

RESUMO Foi realizado o levantamento da comunidade arbórea de uma floresta tropical superomontana, situada na Serra de São Domingos, no planalto de Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, Brasil (altitude de 1.200 m a 1.575 m; 21°46’25”S, 46’24”10”W), com o objetivo de avaliar as variações estruturais e variáveis ambientais relacionadas. Foram analisados aspectos da estrutura fisionômica (densidade, área basal e distribuição de tamanho das árvores) e comunitária (composição, distribuição e diversidade de espécies). Foram alocadas 22 parcelas de 5 x 100 m no fragmento para amostragem dos indivíduos arbóreos com diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) ≥ 5 cm, e coleta de dados topográficos e amostras de solo superficial (0-20 cm) para análises químicas e texturais. Foram registradas 53 famílias botânicas, 104 gêneros, 178 espécies e 1963 indivíduos, assim como três subgrupos de solos: Neossolos Litólicos, Cambissolos e Argissolos (distróficos e eutróficos), distribuídos ao longo da variação altitudinal do fragmento. Uma análise de correspondência canônica revelou um gradiente de distribuição das espécies arbóreas principalmente correlacionada com as variações altitudinais, o teor de Magnésio (Mg++) e saturação por alumínio (m).

ABSTRACT A survey of the tree community of a ombrophilous upper montane forest, situated in Poços de Caldas, Brazil (1200-1575 m of altitude; 21°46’25”S, 46’24”10”W) was carried out in order to assess its environmental and structural variation. The physiognomic (density, basal area and distribution of size of the trees) and community structure (composition, distribution and diversity of species) were analyzed through 22 plots of 5 x 100 m, where the tree individuals with diameter at breast height ≥ 5 cm were sampled. The topographic variables were measured and the surface soil samples were collected to obtain their chemical and texture attributes. The survey resulted in 53 botanic families, 104 genera, 178 species and 1963 individuals, as well as four soil classes: distrofic and eutrofic Argisoil, Cambisoil and Litolic Neosoil, distributed sequentially from the hilltop to the base of the fragment. The canonic correspondence analyses showed a gradient of tree species distribution mainly correlated with variations of quotas, magnesium content (Mg++) and aluminum saturation (m).

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to study the phyto-sociological structure of a shrub and tree vegetation colonization in an abandoned stand of Eucalyptus spp. in Lavras, MG, Brazil, in order to identify the existence of species groups, vegetation gradients, and Alpha diversity. The phytosociological sampling collected 5 transects of various sizes with 100 equidistant points (14 m), using the quadrant method. The assessment included all individuals with breast diameter ≥5 cm. There were a total of 854.28 sampled individuals/ha, belonging to 91 species, distributed into 67 genera and 31 families. The highest VI values were obtained for Piptadenia gonoacantha, Copaifera langsdorffii, Tapirira guianensis and Ocotea corymbosa. The analysis of trunk diameter distribution showed that the community was in a stage of full regeneration with individuals distributed over all diameter classes. Most species presented syndromes of seed dispersal by animals and regeneration guilds of pioneer and climax demanding light. Perhaps planting may have served as shelter and refuge for fauna species in the region and mortality of individuals of Eucalyptus spp. resulted in gaps of different sizes. Vegetation was identified along a gradient, with a gradual change in evenness between the four groups of species characterized by cluster analysis. The indices of diversity (H’ = 3.58) and evenness (J = 0.794) of the species were similar to those found in other phyto-sociological studies of Eucaliptus spp platations. Furthermore, the tree planting functioned as a catalyst for natural regeneration in the study area.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve por objetivo conhecer a estrutura fitossociológica da vegetação arbustivoarbórea colonizadora em um plantio, abandonado há 50 anos, de Eucalyptus spp., no Município de Lavras, MG, visando diagnosticar a existência de grupos de espécies, de gradientes vegetacionais e a diversidade alpha. A amostragem fitossociológica, realizada pelo método dos quadrantes, contou com 100 pontos, distribuídos em seis transecções de comprimentos variáveis. Estiveram passíveis de inclusão todos os indivíduos com diâmetro a altura do peito (DAP) (≥5 cm). O levantamento resultou em uma densidade de 854,28 indivíduos/ha, com 91 espécies, distribuídas em 67 gêneros e 31 famílias. Destacaram-se, em valor de importância, Piptadenia gonoacantha, Copaifera langsdorffii, Tapirira guianensis e Ocotea corymbosa. A análise da distribuição dos indivíduos em classes de diâmetro revelou uma comunidade em plena regeneração. A maioria das espécies apresentou síndromes de dispersão zoocórica, sugerindo que o plantio pode ter servido de abrigo e refúgio para espécies da fauna dispersora presente na região. As guildas de regeneração mais frequentes foram as de pioneiras e clímax exigentes de luz, possivelmente em função da mortalidade de indivíduos de Eucalyptus spp., que ocasionou clareiras de diferentes tamanhos. Foi diagnosticado um gradiente vegetacional longo, com uma mudança gradativa na equabilidade entre os quatro grupos de espécies caracterizados pela análise de agrupamento. Os índices de diversidade (H’ = 3,58) e equabilidade (J = 0,794) de espécies foram semelhantes aos encontrados em outros levantamentos fitossociológicos, em plantios de Eucaliptus spp.. Dessa forma, o plantio funcionou como um catalisador da regeneração natural na área de estudo.

Este estudo foi realizado em uma área de floresta ciliar em processo de recuperação mediante reabilitação. A área de estudo está localizada na sub-bacia hidrográfica do rio Itapemirim, no Município de Alegre, ES, Brasil. A ocupação e uso do solo antes da revegetação eram de pastagem com Brachiaria sp. A revegetação da área foi feita em 1997, com espécies autóctones e alóctones arbóreas, em arranjo de distribuição aleatório, em uma área de 1,2 ha. Para a realização dos estudos foram feitos inventários florestais nos períodos de 2004/2005 e 2005/2006, sendo medidos os indivíduos de hábito arbustivo e arbóreo com circunferência à altura do peito (CAP) > 5 cm e suas alturas totais. As espécies encontradas na área foram identificadas e classificadas de acordo com seus grupos ecológicos, síndromes de dispersão e presença silvestre, sendo calculados os parâmetros florísticos, a estrutura vertical e a dinâmica estrutural desse povoamento. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o desenvolvimento do povoamento implantado para subsidiar práticas silviculturais quanto à seleção e implantação de espécies para revegetação de áreas de floresta ciliar degradadas, em condições semelhantes. Os resultados demonstraram que foi implantado um povoamento florestal com grande diversidade de espécies e a estratificação em classes de altura foi à semelhança de povoamentos heterogêneos naturais. As espécies identificadas como edificadoras da revegetação da área estudada foram: Anadenanthera colubrina, Caesalpinia leyostachia, Acacia auriculiformis, Acacia mangium, Handroanthus serratifolius, Inga edulis, Joannesia princeps, Pterogyne nitens, Enterelobium contortisiliquum, Tabernaemontana hystrix e Anthocephalus indicus. A distribuição em classes de tamanho da comunidade implantada ocorre em forma de "J" reverso, havendo a predominância de indivíduos pioneiros em todas as classes de CAP. A dinâmica da estrutura horizontal apontou que, para o sucesso, continuidade e desenvolvimento da recuperação da área, seja monitorada a regeneração natural em relação à sua presença e à eficiência dos fatores bióticos e abióticos que nela interferem. A não observância de indivíduos arbustivos e arbóreos regenerados naturalmente, na classe de inclusão do estudo, indica a fragilidade inicial da área rumo à sustentabilidade do sistema.

The study was realized in an area of riparian forest in process by means of rehabilitation. The study area is located in Rio Itapemirim, in Alegre city, Brazil. The occupation and use of the soil before the recovery were of pasture with Brachiaria sp. The recovery of this area was in 1997, with autochthonous and allochthonous species, in casually distribution arrangement, in an area of 1,2 ha. For this studies was realized forest inventories in the periods of 2004/2005 and 2005/2006, being measured the arboreal individuals with circumference at breast height (CBH) and total heights. The species found in the area were identified and classified in this ecological groups, dispersion syndromes and wild presence, it forms calculated the floristic parameters, the vertical structure and the structural dynamics of this plantation. The objective of this work went evaluate the development of the plantation implanted to subsidize practical silviculture with relationship to the selection and plantation of species for the revegetation of degraded areas of riparian forest, in similar conditions. The results of the studies demonstrated that a forest plantation was implanted with great diversity of species and the bedding in height classes it went to the likeness of natural heterogeneous. The species identified as builders of the plantation of the studied area were: Anadenanthera colubrina, Caesalpinia leyostachia, Acacia auriculiformis, Acacia mangium, Handroanthus serratifolius, Inga edulis, Joannesia princeps, Pterogyne nitens, Enterelobium contortisiliquum, Tabernaemontana hystrix, and Anthocephalus indicus. The implanted community's distribution diametric happens in reverse J shape having the pioneer individuals' predominance in all the classes of CBH. The dynamics of the horizontal structure points that for the success, continuity and development of the recovery of the area, the natural regeneration be monitored in relation to its presence and efficiency of the biotic factors and abiotic those interfere in the same. The not tree individuals observance in natural regeneration, in the class of inclusion of the study, indicate the initial fragility of the area heading for sustentabilidade of the system.
