Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of two Embryo Manipulation Solutions (EMS and EMS supplemented) in maintenance of the viability of embryos, initially using structures derived from mice (first phase). Next, the efficiency of these solutions in routines of bovine embryo transfer was evaluated (second stage). Mice embryos were used in the stages of early blastocyst, and compact morula grades I and II. These embryos were initially randomly distributed and maintained for four hours in three solutions: Modified phosphate buffered saline (PBS; Control); EMS (treatment 1), and EMS supplemented (treatment 2). Subsequently, they were cultured in TCM 199 medium and evaluated in terms of total number of cells, morphometric characteristics, ultra structural aspects, detection of cell apoptosis, and quantification of Hsp70.3 gene expression. In the second phase, these same solutions were tested in the transfer of quality I and II bovine embryos (excellent and good). These embryos were transferred fresh to 58 recipients. The results showed that the total number of cells in embryos expanded blastocyst (ExB), the number of apoptotic cells, the cell, nuclear, nucleolar diameter and the nucleus/nucleolus ratio was similar among the treatments. The pregnancy rate shown on second phase was also similar. However, the EMS supplemented expressed more Hsp70.3 than EMS. The expression of Hsp70.3 was also greater for embryos in EMS than that of EMS supplemented. The McII embryos, EMS and EMS supplemented samples also expressed more Hsp70.3 compared to control embryos. In conclusion, the tested solutions can be used in routine embryo transfer techniques, replacing modified PBS solution as an effective media in maintaining embryo viability.

ABSTRACT Cycle reduction and uniform fruit maturation are desired characteristics for a mechanical harvest of castor bean crop. The objective of this research was to study the effect of secondary growth limitation on growth and production parameters of castor bean plants. A field experiment was conducted between February and May 2012 in a randomized block design in a factorial scheme 2 × 2, with four replications. Two castor bean hybrids (Hybrid 12 and Hybrid 18) were grown in two cultivation systems: (i) plants without growth limitation and (ii) plants with secondary stem growth limitation (thinning with pruning). Removal of secondary stems resulted in higher partitioning of assimilates to the primary raceme, promoting higher number and dry weight of grains. As a result, plants with only the primary raceme presented grain yield equivalent to plants without growth limitation. Oil yield of plants with only the primary raceme was equivalent to the control for the Hybrid 12 and higher for the Hybrid 18, with advantage of uniform maturation for these plants.

Abstract This article discusses the methodology for the definition, classification, and measurement of social positions of the parliamentary political elite. We present some theoretical and methodological strategies for classifying the variable “occupation held prior to political career”, and suggest the use of more than one indicator for this measurement. We argue that a typology of both social and political characteristics of parliament members is the best way to grasp the transformations on the patterns of political recruitment throughout the 20th century. The first model we tested classified Brazilian senators elected between 1918 and 2010 among occupations conventionally used in studies on political elites. The second applied model seeks to change the coding of occupations so as to grasp this group’s sociopolitical transformations over time. We conclude with a new classification suggestion, which results from a typology sensitive to the varying values ascribed to professional occupations throughout history.

ABSTRACT The following article analyzes the recruitment of Brazilian senators in the period running from 1890 to 1934, when the country was under an oligarchic political regime. Utilizing Robert Dahl’s terminology, we aim to identify if it is possible to gauge political professionalization in the midst of a regime of “competitive oligarchies” marked by restricted participation and by political competition limited by the domination of small groups. If found to be true, this will allow us to problematize the relationship often made in classic and contemporary literature between polyarchies and political professionalization and to suggest that this can even occur under a regime of “competitive oligarchies”. The analysis is based on a tracing of the political careers of 851 leaders throughout the period.

Abstract The article rebuilds the collective profiles of the Brazilian Senate benches in three periods: the populist democracy (1945-1964) , the military dictatorship (1964-1979) and the regime of transition to liberal democracy (1979-1990). The time frame takes into account three party systems: multipartisan (1945-1965), bipartisan (1965-1979) and multiparty one more time (1979 ahead). The hypothesis we seek to test is the following: changes in the social profile and the profile of the political career of parliamentarians should be related to the type of political regime and, more specifically, with the then current party system. In the case analyzed here, is assumed the attributes of Brazilian Senate members elected under a system of several competing parties must be distinct from attributes of those elected under bipartisanship – even though the electoral rules were the same. In order to analyze the impact of the changes in conditions for access the upper chamber 351 senators were studied. The data shows these representatives had the profile of their careers severely affected by variations in the parameters of political competition imposed by the military dictatorship. The narrowing of opportunity structure, a straight effect of bipartisan system, was responsible for harming competitors without major political experience. With the reintroduction of multiparty politics in the 1982 elections, the characteristics of these parliamentary careers came back to the previous profile previous to 1964.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of training programs with active video games (AVGs) structured and unstructured on body composition and performance in the physical fitness tests during six weeks. Study participants were 20 men who were evenly divided into three groups: Control Group - CG (n = 7; 20.6 ± 2.8 years), Experimental Structured Group -GET (n = 6; 20.2 ± 2.1 year) and Experimental Unstructured Group - GEN (n = 7; 19.1 ± 1.2 years). The AVGs program was performed three times a week (thirty minutes each) during six weeks. There were significant improvements in the front support testing (GET p = 0.02), flexibility (GEN: p = 0.04 and GET: p = 0.01) and handgrip (GEN p = 0.05). And only GEN increased significantly the fat percentage (p = 0.05) and fat mass (p = 0.01). After six weeks of each parallel AVGs training, these two groups presented maintenance in lean mass and increase in the level of physical fitness.

ABSTRACT The castor bean shows great potential for cultivation under the conditions found in Brazil, however, in order to achieve high productivity and introduce the crop into the Brazilian agricultural system, ever more efficient methods of crop management should be developed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the agronomic characteristics and productivity of the castor bean for the method of cultivation and planting density. The study was carried out under field conditions during the 2010 crop year, using the IAC 2028 cultivar. An experimental design of randomised blocks was employed in a 2 x 3 factorial, with four replications. The first factor comprised two planting densities (26,666 and 111,111 plants ha-1), while the second factor consisted of three methods of cultivation (control, partial pruning and thinning with pruning). At the end of crop development, the agronomic characteristics of the plants, yield components and productivity were determined. Pruning with thinning resulted in an improvement in the agronomic characteristics without affecting productivity, and reduced the crop cycle by 30 days. This behaviour, together with uniform maturation, may contribute to the mechanical harvesting of the crop, as well as allowing cultivation of the castor bean in the off-season without affecting the following harvest. Dense cultivation of the castor bean limited the appearance of secondary productive branches without affecting productivity, demonstrating a high phenotypic plasticity in crop development.

The article analyzes the career patterns of Brazilian senators during the First Republic. It explores whether there is any relationship between the establishment of a structure of political opportunities and the recruitment patterns of this segment of the parliamentary elite. The aim is to assess the circulation among the political positions attained before reaching the position of Senator. The research consists of the systematic observation of the biographies of the 851 holders of senatorial mandates from the 21st legislature (1890/1891) to the 37th senatorial term (1934/1937). Results suggest that the political careers of senators extended in time and have become more diverse in terms of the political instances they encompassed. The new institutional framework, with more positions facing electoral competition and the strengthening of state-level policy, has intensified political circulation among government levels (municipal, state and federal) and the decision-making arenas (executive and legislative). These results show that the legislative recruitment patterns identified in the literature devoted to the second half of the 20th century were already outlined by the senatorial political elite of the First Republic.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

This article brings forward a discussion regarding the definition, classification, and measurement of social positions of origin for research on political elite recruitment. To this end we present several theoretical and methodological strategies to establish the variable "occupation prior to a parliamentary career" and argue in favor of a more analytical criterion than a sociographic one when coding the occupations of those who consider entering the political world. The argument that follows considers that political recruitment could be better apprehended by means of a typology that takes into account not only institutional variables but also, as suggested by Max Weber, social and economic variables. For the empirical test concerning the proposed criteria the data is based on candidates for a federal deputy seat in 2006 and 2010 so as to simulate the efficiency of an alternative classification. This classification is based on three parameters: 1) the flexibility of the candidate's professional career (free time and financial autonomy), 2) the importance of this occupation in a given community (social status) and 3) the candidate's previous affinities with the values and practices of the political world. The results revealed that social cleavages as well as gender cleavages may be enhanced due to the type of professional activity previously exerted by the political candidates even before institutional filters yield their effects.

This article analyzes legislative recruitment of senators who used to be businessmen before entering politics under current Brazilian democracy. We examine whether, as established for the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, this kind of professional politician settles mostly in the parties on the right of the ideological spectrum and whether or not the connection between their social backgrounds and the parties they take part eventually shorten their ways to the Senate. For that, we use descriptive analysis of occupation, education, and political career data of 240 senators elected between 1986 and 2010. Our data show that even though they belong to Center and Right parties, senators who were businessmen do not have shorter careers, showing that the pattern of political career for that office is different from that observed for the Chamber of Deputies.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of kinetin and calcium applications on the physiologic and productive traits of soybean plants, subjected to drought and shade conditions, at flowering. A randomized complete block design was used, in a split-plot arrangement, with four replicates. Soybean plants cultivated in 38 dm³ pots were sprayed with calcium and kinetin, alone or mixed, and subjected to drought and shade during 12 days. After stress period, plants were cultivated under appropriate water and light availability. Calcium and kinetin application resulted in maintenance of the relative water content after four days of drought beginning. Membrane damage, measured at the end of stress period, was lower in plants sprayed with calcium and kinetin. CO2 assimilation diminished by stress condition, mainly under drought, and grain yield decreased at the same intensity in both environments.

Stingrays are a group of rays – cartilaginous fish related to sharks – that have whiplike tails with barbed, usually venomous spines and are found around the world, especially the marine species. Despite recent reports of accidents involving these fish, they are not aggressive, reacting only when stepped on or improperly handled. Injuries by stingrays are seldom mentioned by historians, although they have always been present in riverine communities of inland waters and in South American coasts. Indeed, envenomations by stingrays are quite common in freshwater and marine fishing communities. Although having high morbidity, such injuries are neglected because they have low lethality and usually occur in remote areas, which favor the use of folk remedies. In the present review article, historical aspects of injuries caused by stingrays in Brazil and their distribution on the coast of São Paulo state and riverine communities of the North, Midwest and Southeast regions were studied. In addition, other aspects were analyzed such as clinical features, therapeutic methods, preventive measures and trends in occurrence of these accidents in the country, particularly in areas in which freshwater stingrays had not been previously registered, being introduced after breaching of natural barriers.
