ABSTRACT Ilex paraguariensis is an important non-timber forest product in southern Brazil, where it is cultivated in association with native species, given its demand for shading, which contributes to the conservation and carbon fixation in its biomass. However, determining this biomass is difficult, since the estimates do not guarantee additivity between the compartments and the total aboveground biomass. This study aimed to evaluate additive (seemingly unrelated regression - SUR) and non-additive (ordinary least squares - OLS) biomass models in an Ilex paraguariensis stand and comparing its carbon stock with other land use types, consolidating its potential in the face of climate change. A total of 30 trees were cut, compartmentalized and weighed on a digital scale, and four biomass models were adjusted. The carbon stocks were compared with values found in the literature. The bias in the SUR model was less than 2 %, except for the leaves, while the bias in the OLS model varied between 1 and 14 %. The error ranged between 23 and 49 % for SUR, and between 31 and 50 % for OLS. The models adjusted by SUR ensured the accuracy and additivity of the compartments. The Ilex paraguariensis stand stored more carbon than agriculture and pasture areas, removing more CO2, evidencing the sustainability of this system and favoring the climate stability.

Background: Delays in the treatment of symptomatic cholelithiasis (SCL) increases the risk of biliary complications. There may be differences in the treatment of SCL between the public sector and the social security in the Greater Buenos Aires (GBA). Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the proportion of patients with complicated gallstone disease (CGD) with previous diagnosis of SCL and to evaluate the history of CGD according to the presence of symptoms and its relation with the health care system. Material and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study comparing a public hospital (PH) versus a private center (PrH) in the GBA. The clinical records were analyzed and patients with a history of cholecystectomy due to CGD (acute cholecystitis, acute pancreatitis and acute choledocholithiasis) were surveyed. Results: A total of 105 PH patients and 136 PrH patients were included. The baseline characteristics differed in terms of age, educational level, distance from home to hospital and ASA physical status classification. The previous diagnosis of SCL was more common in the PH (60% vs. 39.7%; p = 0.02) and this difference persisted after multivariate adjustment (OR 2.14; 95% CI, 1.1-4.1; p = 0.02). The PH presented more patients with abdominal pain and more visits to the emergency department (ED) after the diagnosis; time after the diagnosis was greater and these patients spent more time on the waiting list. Conclusions: The PH showed greater loss of surgical opportunity of uncomplicated cholelithiasis. This may be due to multiple factors, but further studies are necessary to confirm this hypothesis.

ABSTRACT Hydrogels (polyacrylamide compounds) are recommended in agriculture and forestry as soil conditioners because they are able to absorb water and increase its stocks in the soil. The aim of this study was to determine the most suitable dose of hydrogel to establish seedlings of Enterolobium contortisilliquum (Vell.) Morong under two levels of luminosity. Seedlings of Enterolobium contortisilliquum (Vell.) Morong were planted in pots, following a design of subdivided plots, consisting of two levels of luminosity in the plots: full sun and 50% luminosity, and 10 doses of hydrogel in the sub-plots: 0.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5 and 6.0 g L-1. Seventy-two days after the seedlings were transplanted to the pots, plant height and diameter were determined, together with the height to diameter ratio, root length and diameter, shoot and root dry weight, and the shoot to root ratio. The lowest ratios between height and stem diameter (8.50 and 8.68) occurred in the seedlings in full sun at the doses of 0 and 2 g hydrogel L-1 respectively. For shaded seedlings the lowest ratio (8.14) occurred at the dose of 3.0 g L-1, but with a lower coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.68). Shoot dry weight increased with the dose of 2 g L-1 in full sun, and 3.5 g L-1 under shaded conditions. The doses of hydrogel giving the best initial development in seedlings under evaluation were 2 g L-1 in full sun and 3.5 g L-1 in the shaded environment. Although a response by the species to the doses of hydrogel was found, the benefits of the polymer were not evident under the conditions of the present study.

ABSTRACT The watershed is considered a geographical clipping important for environmental planning. Its correct delineation allows appropriate planning with the needs of society. In this sense, the present work aims to carry out a comparative analysis of visual automatic boundaries performed with the programs TauDEM, SAGA and TERRAHIDRO, as well as the delimitation by visual analysis, with the official boundaries of the SEMARH-RN and ANA (ottobacia 05 level), aiming to redefine and update the limits of the basin of Rio Doce/RN. To do the demarcation used the terrain elevation data of the database geomorphometrics of Brazil, TOPODATA, hydrography of topographical maps of SUDENE, in scale 1:100,000, the Google Earth images, worked in SIGs QGIS 2.14 “Essen” and the Terraview hydro 0.4.1. The results showed that the delimitation and automatic visual analysis using the TERRAHIDRO Platform identified the basin boundaries in their flattened areas. Already the TauDEM and the SAGA identified a palaeochannel of Doce river, directing, so the mouth of the basin point. It is understood that the TERRAHIDRO presented the best result for the demarcation of the basin by its use to basin to medium and large scales.

This study showed anatomical differences related to Piper lepturumvar. lepturum and P. lepturum var. angustifolium species, sometimes considered varieties and in other cases synonyms. For histological analysis, fully expanded leaves were collected and for analysis by scanning electron microscope (SEM), fragments from the midrib were fixed on both leaf surfaces. The two species revealed differences in plant anatomy and it was observed that the stem of P. lepturum var. lepturum showed persistent wings and papillary epidermal cells, and these characters are absent in P. lepturum var. angustifolium. There was also the presence of raphides only in the lamina leaf and petiole of P. lepturum var. angustifolium, differentiating the two species. Recent studies have shown the importance of plant anatomy with species where there are issues related to taxonomic delimitation.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Conidiobolomycosis is reported in 25 farms, from January 2002 to December 2004, in the state of Piauí. The disease affects only sheep, mainly in April-June. The mean morbidity rate was 2.80%, but was higher in the first semester (2.1%), during the raining period, than in the second one (0.69%), during the dry period. Morbidity rate among flocks varied from 0.1-14.3%. Case fatality rate was 100%, and the clinical manifestation period varied from 1-5 weeks. Clinical signs were serous, mucous and/or bloody nasal secretion, respiratory distress, snoring respiration, cranium-facial asymmetry, exophthalmia, fever and progressive emaciation. Marked depression, sometimes with the head down or head pressing was observed in some cases. Gross, microscopic and ultrastructural lesions and identification of the agent are reported elsewhere. This is the first report of conidiobolomycosis in Brazil, which is endemic and has a high frequency in sheep in the State of Piauí, associated with high rainfalls (1000-1600mm annually) and high temperature (19-36ºC).
