RESUMO: Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner: 1818) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) é uma das principais pragas que acometem a cultura da soja, causando desfolha. Nos estágios vegetativos a desfolha ocorre juntamente com ervas daninhas, e no reprodutivo com patógenos. Nesse sentido, para manter a fitossanidade, é necessário realizar a utilização combinada de pesticidas. Assim, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi determinar a compatibilidade do vírus entomopatogênico AgMNPV com os principais herbicidas e fungicidas utilizados na soja em diferentes tempos de mistura. A dieta artificial foi imersa nas soluções dos pesticidas e suas misturas e fornecida às lagartas de A. gemmatalis, imediatamente e após uma e duas horas de mistura. A avaliação foi realizada quantificando o número de lagartas mortas. A mistura do vírus AgMNPV com herbicidas e fungicidas, mesmo após duas horas de mistura se mostrou compatível. Os cenários observados mostram a compatibilidade do vírus com os herbicidas e fungicidas, com percentuais de mortalidade entre 70 a 99% para A. gemmatalis.

ABSTRACT: Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner: 1818) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) is one of the main pests that affect soybean crops, causing defoliation. In the vegetative stages, defoliation occurs together with weeds, and in the reproductive stages with pathogens. In this sense, to maintain plant health, it is necessary to carry out the combined use of pesticides. Thus, this research determined the compatibility of the entomopathogenic virus AgMNPV with the main herbicides and fungicides used in soy at different times of the mixture. The artificial diet was immersed in the solutions of the pesticides and their mixtures and supplied to A. gemmatalis caterpillars, immediately and after one and two hours of mixing. The evaluation was performed by quantifying the number of dead caterpillars by mixing the AgMNPV virus with herbicides and fungicides, even after two hours of mixing if compatible. The observed scenarios showed a compatibility of the virus with the herbicides and fungicides, with mortality rates between 70 to 99% for A. gemmatalis.

Resumo A aeluroestrongilose, causada pelo nematoide metastrongilídeo Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, é uma doença respiratória subestimada. Os gatos infectados pelo A. abstrusus podem ser assintomáticos ou apresentarem sinais graves. O A. abstrusus possui distribuição cosmopolita. Apesar disso, estudos sobre esse parasita no Brasil são escassos, e a maioria deles são realizados na região Sul. Este estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a ocorrência de A. abstrusus em gatos de Vilhena, Rondônia, Brasil. De abril de 2020 a fevereiro de 2021, foram avaliadas três amostras consecutivas de fezes de 101 felinos, utilizando-se as técnicas de Baermann e de a Hoffman. Dois gatos (1,98%) foram positivos para A. abstrusus, um pela técnica de Baermann e outro pela técnica de Hoffman. Não foram encontrados outros parasitas pulmonares. Os achados clínicos dos gatos positivos foram descritos, e os resultados deste estudo discutidos sob aspectos clínicos e epidemiológicos.

Abstract Aelurostrongylosis, caused by the metastrongylid nematode Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, is an underestimated feline respiratory disease. Cats infected by A. abstrusus may show subclinical to severe clinical signs. Aelurostrongylus abstrusus has a worldwide distribution. Nevertheless, studies on this parasite in Brazil are scarce, and most have been conducted in the southern regions. This study investigated the occurrence of A. abstrusus in cats in Vilhena, Rondônia, Brazil, from April 2020 to February 2021. Three consecutive individual fecal samples from 101 cats were examined using Baermann and Hoffman tests. Two cats (1.98%) scored positive for A. abstrusus, one with the Baermann examination, and one with the Hoffman technique. No other lungworms were retrieved. The clinicopathological and epizootiological implications are described and discussed.

Abstract This study aimed to develop and characterize mixed beverages (suchás) formulations based on organic apple juice and cardamom tea (F1= 50:50 vv−1, F2 = 60:40 vv−1 and F3 =70:30 vv−1). The formulation (F3) presented the highest total phenolic compounds content (31.79 mg EAG g-1), antioxidant activity (50.04 µg mL-1), total soluble solids (5.1 oBrix), acidity (pH 4.17 and total acidity 0.15 g malic acid 100 mL-1) and sensory acceptance (flavor and overall impression). Furthermore, it presented important volatile compounds (2-methyl-1-butanol, formic acid butyl ester, acetyl pentyl acetate, and α-terpinolene). A synergistic effect of apple juice and cardamom tea was observed for the antioxidant activity and number of volatile compounds, demonstrating the potential of this mixed beverage as a functional food. In conclusion, it was possible to develop a mixed beverage with suitable nutritional, physicochemical and sensory properties using 70% of organic apple juice and 30% of cardamom tea.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Abdominoplasty, which aims to improve body contour, has been upgraded by its association with limited dissection of the cutaneous flap and quilting sutures in the same surgery to avoid the formation of post-abdominoplasty seroma, a complication that troubles both patient and surgeon. Therefore, this study aimed to assess whether the use of quilting sutures is associated with a lower incidence of seroma after abdominoplasty than the use of drains. Methods: A systematic review of the literature and a meta-analysis were performed of the Science Direct, Scielo, Pubmed, Lilacs, CINAHL, and Scopus databases. The data analysis was performed using the Stata 12.0 program and the I2 statistic proposed by Higgins, with a 95% confidence interval for the relative risk for seroma by intervention type (drain, quilting sutures, drain with quilting sutures). The study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42019120399). Results: Five studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. Quilting sutures showed a protective effect (versus use of drain with quilting sutures) in the prevention of seroma (relative risk, 0.13; 95% confidence interval, 0.02-0.66). Conclusion: These findings suggest that the use of quilting sutures instead of drains in abdominoplasty can effectively prevent seroma formation.

RESUMO Introdução: A abdominoplastia é um procedimento para a melhoria do contorno corporal e a técnica tem sido aprimorada pela associação da dissecção limitada do retalho cutâneo e pontos de adesão no mesmo ato operatório, evitando-se a formação de seroma pós-abdominoplastia, complicação que incomoda tanto o paciente quanto o cirurgião. Portanto, o objetivo é avaliar se o uso de pontos de adesão está associado a menor incidência de seroma após abdominoplastia quando comparado ao uso de drenos. Métodos: Revisão sistemática da literatura com metanálise, envolvendo as seguintes bases de dados: Science Direct, Scielo, Pubmed, Lilacs, CINAHL e Scopus. Para analisar os dados foi utilizado o programa Stata 12.0 e a estatística I2 proposta por Higgins, com intervalo de confiança de 95% para o risco relativo para seroma, segundo o tipo de intervenção (dreno, ponto de adesão, dreno com ponto de adesão). Sendo registrado no PROSPERO sob o número CRD42019120399. Resultados: Cinco estudos preencheram os critérios de inclusão e foram incluídos na metanálise. Ao comparar o uso de dreno de sucção com pontos de adesão, os pontos de adesão mostraram um fator de proteção na prevenção do seroma (RR: 0,13; IC 95%: 0,02-0,66). Conclusão: Os achados sugerem que o uso de pontos de adesão em abdominoplastia em detrimento do uso de drenos pode ser uma técnica eficaz para prevenção da formação de seromas.

RESUMO: No presente trabalho objetivou-se avaliar a longevidade de operárias de A. mellifera alimentadas com dieta incorporada com os entomopatógenos comerciais Beauveria bassiana e Bacillus thuringiensis, e verificar possíveis alterações morfológicas em seu mesêntero. Para isso, os entomopatógenos utilizados foram B. bassiana (Produto A) (5,0 × 1011 conídios viáveis.kg-1), B. thuringiensis (Produto B) (2,5 × 109 esporos viáveis.g-1), B. thuringiensis (Produto C) (1,0 × 109 esporos viáveis.g-1); e dois controles: T1: água destilada esterilizada e T2: água destilada esterilizada + Tween 80® (0,01%). Para os bioensaios, 2 mL de cada tratamento foram incorporados à pasta Cândi. Para cada tratamento, 80 abelhas foram acondicionadas, individualmente, em tubos de vidro de fundo chato (2,5 cm Ø), cobertos com voile, contendo um pedaço de algodão embebido em água e pasta Cândi. Os tubos contendo as abelhas foram acondicionados em B.O.D (30 ± 2°C, U.R. 70% ± 10%, 12 h), e a mortalidade foi avaliada a cada seis horas, durante 10 dias. Logo após a verificação da mortalidade, foram separadas duas abelhas por tratamento para a retirada do mesêntero. Essas amostras foram processadas em metodologia padrão para Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV). Verificou-se que os produtos A, B e C reduziram a longevidade das abelhas quando comparados aos controles T1 e T2. Nas análises qualitativas realizadas com MEV, não foi possível observar alterações morfológicas externas ou internas nos tecidos do mesêntero. Apesar dos produtos A, B e C causarem redução na longevidade, sua presença não foi verificada quando os tecidos foram analisados por MEV.

ABSTRACT: The present study had the objective of evaluating the longevity of A. mellifera workers fed on a diet incorporating commercial entomopathogens, Beauveria bassiana, and Bacillus thuringiensis. It also aimed at verifying possible morphological alterations in the midgut. To this purpose, the entomopathogens used were B. bassiana (Product A) (5.0 × 1011 viable conidia.kg-1), B. thuringiensis (Product B) (2.5 × 109 viable spores.g-1), and B. thuringiensis (Product C) (1.0 × 109 viable spores.g-1); and two controls: T1: sterilized distilled water, and T2: sterilized distilled water + Tween 80® (0.01%). For the bioassays, 2 mL of each treatment were incorporated into Candy paste. For each treatment, 80 bees were individually in flat bottom glass tubes (2.5 cm Ø) covered with voile, containing a piece of cotton soaked in water and Candy paste. These tubes were stored in a B.O.D (30 ± 2°C, R.H 70% ± 10%, 12 h), and mortality was evaluated every six hours, for 10 days. Soon after verifying mortality, two bees per treatment were selected for the removal of their midgut. Midgut samples were processed using standard methodology for Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). It was verified that products A, B, and C reduced the longevity of bees when compared to T1 and T2 controls. In the qualitative analyses carried out using SEM, it was not possible to observe external or internal morphological alterations to midgut tissues. Although products A, B, and C cause a reduction in longevity, their presence was not verified when tissues were analyzed using SEM.

Infecção do cérebro pelo fungo Cryptococcus neoformans resulta em um estimado de 500.000 mortes de pessoas por ano. A colonização do sistema nervoso central (SNC) pelo C. neoformans causa diversas síndromes clínicas que envolvem a interação de um número de componentes de fungo com distintas células do cérebro. Nesse artigo, nossa revisão da literatura confirmou a ideia de que a área de Cryptococcus está em rápida expansão, mas também sugeriu que os estudos sobre neuropatogênese ainda representam uma fração pequena da atividade de pesquisas básicas no campo. Nós, portanto, discutimos aspectos anatômicos e fisiológicos do cérebro durante a infecção pelo C. neoformans, além dos mecanismos pelos quais as células residentes do cérebro interagem com o fungo. Essa revisão sugere que esforços múltiplos são necessários para aprofundar o conhecimento sobre como o C. neoformans afeta as células do cérebro, para permitir a geração de novas ferramentas terapêuticas em futuro próximo.

Brain infection by the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans results in an estimated 500,000 human deaths per annum. Colonization of the central nervous system (CNS) by C. neoformans causes different clinical syndromes that involve interaction of a number of fungal components with distinct brain cells. In this manuscript, our literature review confirmed the notion that the Cryptococcus field is expanding rapidly, but also suggested that studies on neuropathogenesis still represent a small fraction of basic research activity in the field. We therefore discussed anatomical and physiological aspects of the brain during infection by C. neoformans, in addition to mechanisms by which brain resident cells interact with the fungus. This review suggests that multiple efforts are necessary to improve the knowledge on how C. neoformans affects brain cells, in order to enable the generation of new therapeutic tools in a near future.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar se um programa de exercícios de intensidade moderada por um pequeno período pode alterar os parâmetros inflamatórios e melhorar os diferentes componentes da síndrome metabólica em pacientes sedentários. MÉTODOS: Dezesseis pacientes completaram 12 semanas de exercício supervisionado, que consistiu em caminhar 40 a 50 minutos 3 vezes por semana, atingindo 50 a 60% da frequência cardíaca de reserva. Os parâmetros avaliados pré e pós-intervenção foram circunferência de cintura, pressão arterial sistólica e diastólica, triglicérides, LDL-colesterol, HDL-colesterol, colesterol total, proteína C-reativa e interleucina 8. RESULTADOS: Houve redução significativa na circunferência da cintura (102,1±7,5cm versus 100,8±7,4cm; p=0,03) e índice de massa corporal (29,7±3,2kg/m² versus 29,3±3,5kg/m²; p=0,03). A pressão arterial sistólica diminuiu de 141±18 para 129±13mmHg e a diastólica de 79±12 para 71±10mmHg (p<0,05 para ambos). Não foram observadas alterações no colesterol total, LDL-colesterol e triglicérides, mas houve melhora significativa nos níveis de HDL-colesterol, - 45,5±6,0 versus 49,5±9,8mg/dL (p=0,02). Houve uma tendência na redução de proteína C-reativa (8,3%; p=0,07) e interleucina 8 (17,4%; p=0,058). A melhora na capacidade cardiovascular foi demonstrada por um aumento de 13% no volume de oxigênio estimado (p<0,001). CONCLUSÃO: Os benefícios do exercício aeróbico com intensidade moderada puderam ser observados em apenas 12 semanas de treinamento em pacientes sedentários com síndrome metabólica. Considerando a facilidade de autoaplicabilidade e os efeitos metabólicos comprovados, tal programa pode ser uma primeira abordagem para pacientes sedentários com síndrome metabólica.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether a short-term moderate intensity exercise program could change inflammatory parameters, and improve different components of metabolic syndrome in sedentary patients. METHODS: Sixteen patients completed the 12-week program of supervised exercise, which consisted of a 40 to 50 minutes of walking, 3 times a week, reaching 50 to 60% of the heart rate reserve. The parameters evaluated before and after intervention were waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, C-reactive protein and interleukin 8. RESULTS: There was a significant reduction in waist circumference (102.1±7.5cm to 100.8±7.4cm; p=0.03) and in body mass index (29.7±3.2kg/m² versus 29.3±3.5kg/m²; p=0.03). Systolic blood pressure dropped from 141±18 to 129±13mmHg and diastolic from 79±12 to 71±10mmHg (with p<0.05 for both). No changes were observed on total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, although HDL cholesterol levels improved, from 45.5±6.0 to 49.5±9.8mg/dL (p=0.02). There was a trend toward reduction of C-reactive protein (8.3%; p=0.07) and interleukin 8 levels (17.4%; p=0.058). The improvement in cardiovascular capacity was demonstrated by an increase of 13% in estimated volume of oxygen (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Benefits of aerobic exercise of moderate intensity were seen within only 12 weeks of training in sedentary patients with metabolic syndrome. Considering the easy self-applicability and proven metabolic effects, an exercise program could be a first approach to sedentary patients with metabolic syndrome.

INTRODUÇÃO: A intolerância ao exercício prejudica a realização das atividades de vida diária em portadores de doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica (DPOC) e a avaliação dessa limitação é fundamental. Objetivo: Comparar o teste de caminhada dos seis minutos (TC6') com o teste da escada (TE) em portadores de DPOC. MÉTODOS: Prospectivo composto por 21 pacientes portadores de DPOC avaliados para um programa de reabilitação pulmonar que realizaram o TC6' e o TE. As variáveis fisiológicas frequência cardíaca (FC) e saturação periférica de oxigênio (SpO2), além da escala de Borg modificada, foram aferidas antes e após cada teste. A distância percorrida era medida ao término de ambos os testes. RESULTADOS: Comparando os momentos (inicial versus final) das variáveis fisiológicas de ambos os testes, foi observado no TC6' (FC 81,1 ± 2,6 versus 98,4 ± 4,4; SpO2 94,9 ± 2,2 versus 90,4 ± 5,0; PSE Borg 0,5 ± 0,8 versus 3,6 ± 2,5) e no TE (FC 86,9 ± 18,8 versus 119,3 ± 14,5; SpO2 94,7 ± 2,5 versus 90,1 ± 4,5; PSE Borg 0,2 ± 0,4 versus 7,0 ± 2,3), sendo que todas as variações foram estatisticamente significativas (p < 0,001) em ambos os testes. Quando avaliada a alteração das variáveis em ambos os testes, verificou-se que a SpO2 obteve redução semelhante (p = 0,912), a FC aumentou significativamente mais no TE (p = 0,006), bem como a PSE Borg (p < 0,001). Em relação à distância percorrida, o TC6' permitiu que os participantes percorressem uma distância significativamente maior do que o TE (404m versus 153m; p < 0,001) CONCLUSÃO: Ambos os testes promoveram alterações fisiológicas significativas. Apesar de o TE representar uma distância significativamente menor, a sobrecarga, bem como a percepção de trabalho, foi significativamente maior.

INTRODUCTION: Exercise intolerance interposes daily life activities in chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD); hence, the evaluation of this functional limitation becomes fundamental. Objective: To compare the six-minute walk test (HR6peak) with the stair-climbing test (SCT) in patients with COPD. METHODS: prospective analysis of twenty-one patients with COPD who were part of the - Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program - (PRP). Patients were evaluated from July to October, 2008 when they performed the HR6peak and ET, analyzing the variables physiological (HR, PSO2), and the modified Borg scale before and after each test. The distance was measured at the end of the tests. RESULTS: Comparing the timing (early versus late) of physiological and subjective perception of exertion (RPE) from Borg, we can observe that all changes were statistically significant (p <0.001) tests. However, when the physiological changes were compared, the PSO2 obtained presented similar reduction (p = 0.912) in both tests, the HR increased significantly in ET (p = 0.006) and on Borg RPE (p <0.001). Regarding the walking distance performed, the HR6peak (p <0.001), allowed participants to advance to a distance significantly longer than the ET. CONCLUSION: the tests expressed important physiological and subjective perception of effort (RPE) from Borg (p <0.001).

A distribuição espacial e temporal de Pseudis minuta Günther, 1858 e fatores ambientais relacionados à atividade reprodutiva da espécie foram estudados na Reserva Biológica do Lami (30º 15' S; 51º 05' W), Porto Alegre, Brasil. As atividades de campo compreenderam visitas bimensais a três banhados semi-permanentes, com duração aproximada de dois dias e duas noites cada, entre agosto de 2004 e julho de 2005. Observaram-se diferenças nos sítios utilizados por machos, fêmeas e juvenis, com machos ocupando locais mais profundos e mais distantes da margem. A distribuição temporal dos indivíduos, vocalizações e amplexos indicaram que a atividade reprodutiva de P. minuta está relacionada com alguns dos fatores abióticos estudados. Os machos em atividade de vocalização apresentaram diferença significativa em relação aos machos não vocalizantes para todos os fatores abióticos diários analisados (temperatura do ar, temperatura da água, umidade relativa do ar e pluviosidade), bem como na temperatura do ar e pluviosidade mensais. O número de machos, fêmeas e juvenis em atividade foi influenciada por pelo menos um dos fatores ambientais mensais ou diários analisados. Conclui-se que a reprodução desta espécie é sazonal e parcialmente determinada por fatores abióticos.

We studied the reproductive biology of a population of Pseudis minuta Günther, 1858 from Reserva Biológica do Lami (30º 15' S; 51º 05' W), Porto Alegre, southern Brazil. We assessed the spatial and temporal distribution of individuals (males, females, juveniles) and explored potential relationships with environmental variables. Field activities encompassed bimonthly surveys in three semi-permanent ponds, each one during approximately two days and two nights, from August 2004 to July 2005. We recorded differences in the sites used by males, females and juveniles, with males occupying deeper and more distant places from the border. The temporal distributions of individuals, calling sites and amplectant pairs indicated that the reproductive activity of P. minuta is related to some of the studied abiotic factors. Calling males presented statistical differences in relation to non-calling males for all daily abiotic variables analyzed (air temperature, water temperature, relative humidity and rainfall), as well as to monthly temperature and rainfall. The number of active males, females and juveniles was influenced by at least one of the daily or monthly environmental variables analyzed. We conclude that the reproduction in this species is seasonal and may be partially determined by abiotic factors.
