ABSTRACT Background: Physical exercise programs are recommended for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, studies involving aquatic strength training to improve functional capacity in MS are limited. Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of an aquatic strength-training program in improving physical function, strength, and fatigue levels in individuals with (MS). Methods: Twenty-nine patients with MS were enrolled in the study. All participants underwent a battery of tests to measure physical function, strength and fatigue levels at two time points: before and after the 12-week intervention. The training program included strength exercises with clearly defined load and percentage of repetitions based on the patient’s maximal performance. Statistical analyses were carried out using the Student’s T test for comparison between pre- and post-intervention measures. Results: All test results were improved significantly after the intervention: 6-minute walk time (p=0.00), dominant hand grip strength (p=0.02), non-dominant hand grip strength (p=0.00), getting up (p=0.00), sitting and getting up (p=0.00), walking up 15 steps (p=0.00), walking down 15 steps (p=0.00), putting on socks (p=0.00), severity of fatigue (p=0.01), and impact of fatigue (p=0.01). Conclusion: The aquatic strength-training program was effective in increasing physical capacities of patients with MS.

RESUMO Antecedentes: Programas de exercícios físicos são recomendados para pacientes com esclerose múltipla. No entanto, são limitados os estudos que envolvem o treinamento aquático de força para a melhoria das capacidades funcionais. Objetivo: Investigar o efeito de um programa de treinamento aquático de força nas capacidades funcionais e nos níveis de força e fadiga de pessoas diagnosticadas com esclerose múltipla. Métodos: Foram selecionados 29 voluntários com esclerose múltipla. Todos os participantes realizaram uma bateria de testes, incluindo os de capacidades funcionais, nível de força e níveis de fadiga em dois momentos distintos: pré-intervenção e pós-intervenção. O programa de treinamento de força foi realizado durante 12 semanas. Foram utilizados exercícios de força localizados, com controle específico de carga de trabalho, que variou entre 50 e 90% do máximo, de acordo com a semana de treinamento. Para a análise estatística, optou-se por utilizar o teste t de Student na comparação ente os momentos pré- e pós-intervenção. Resultados: Os resultados demonstraram melhora significativa em todas as variáveis investigadas: teste de 6 min de caminhada (p=0,00); força mão dominante (p=0,02); força mão não dominante (p=0,00); levantar (p=0,00); sentar e levantar-se (p=0,00); subir 15 degraus (p=0,00); descer 15 degraus (p=0,00); calçar meias (p=0,00); gravidade da fadiga (p=0,01); impacto da fadiga (p=0,01). Conclusão: O treinamento aquático de força foi eficiente para melhorar as capacidades funcionais relacionadas à qualidade de vida de pacientes com esclerose múltipla.

Objetivo Verificar os efeitos de um protocolo de treinamento físico resistido ondulatório nos ganhos de força máxima em idosos diabéticos do tipo 2.Métodos Participaram do estudo 48 indivíduos, com idade entre 60 e 85 anos, de ambos os gêneros. Eles foram divididos em dois grupos: Idosos Diabéticos Não Treinados (n=19), com aqueles não submetidos ao treinamento físico, e Idosos Diabéticos Treinados (n=29), que foram submetidos ao protocolo de treinamento físico resistido ondulatório. Os idosos foram avaliados em diversos equipamentos de musculação, antes e após o treinamento resistido ondulatório, por meio do teste de uma repetição máxima. Os participantes realizaram o treinamento resistido ondulatório três vezes por semanas, durante um período de 16 semanas. A sobrecarga do programa foi alternada, sendo em 1 semana equivalente a 50% de uma repetição máxima e, na outra semana, a 70% de uma repetição máxima. A análise estatística revelou diferenças significativas (p<0,05) entre os resultados dos testes pré e pós-período de treinamento resistido ondulatório em um período de 16 semanas.Resultados Os ganhos médios de força foram de 43,20% (extensão de joelho), 65,00% (flexão de joelho), 27,80% (supino sentado máquina), 31,00% (remada sentado), 43,90% (bíceps pulley) e 21,10% (trícepspulley).Conclusão O protocolo de treinamento resistido ondulatório utilizado com sobrecargas semanais diferentes foi eficiente em proporcionar significativos ganhos de força máxima em idosos diabéticos do tipo 2.

ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of a specific protocol of undulatory physical resistance training on maximal strength gains in elderly type 2 diabetics.Methods The study included 48 subjects, aged between 60 and 85 years, of both genders. They were divided into two groups: Untrained Diabetic Elderly (n=19) with those who were not subjected to physical training and Trained Diabetic Elderly (n=29), with those who were subjected to undulatory physical resistance training. The participants were evaluated with several types of resistance training’s equipment before and after training protocol, by test of one maximal repetition. The subjects were trained on undulatory resistance three times per week for a period of 16 weeks. The overload used in undulatory resistance training was equivalent to 50% of one maximal repetition and 70% of one maximal repetition, alternating weekly. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences (p<0.05) between pre-test and post-test over a period of 16 weeks.Results The average gains in strength were 43.20% (knee extension), 65.00% (knee flexion), 27.80% (supine sitting machine), 31.00% (rowing sitting), 43.90% (biceps pulley), and 21.10% (triceps pulley).Conclusion Undulatory resistance training used with weekly different overloads was effective to provide significant gains in maximum strength in elderly type 2 diabetic individuals.

Os objetivos do presente estudo foram: a) Comparar a variação dos valores do VO2pico entre diferentes grupos etários de meninas; b) Comparar a variação dos valores do VO2pico (absoluto e relativo), entre nadadoras (Nad) e não nadadoras (NNad) para os mesmos agrupamentos de idade. Foram avaliadas 74 meninas entre 7-17 anos de idade (34Nad e 40NNad), distribuídas em grupos etários de 7-10, 11-14 e 15-17 anos, formando 06 subgrupos, respectivamente: Nad1 (n=13); Nad2 (n=12); Nad3 (n=09); NNad1 (n=12); NNad2 (n=14); NNad3 (n=14). Para a obtenção dos valores de VO2pico foi utilizado o sistema de análise de gases VO2000® e uma esteira rolante Inbrasport ATL®, adotando o protocolo de Bruce adaptado. Os resultados indicaram que houve um aumento do VO2pico absoluto entre todos os grupos etários tanto para NNad quanto para Nad, o que não foi observado nos valores de VO2pico relativo, sendo que as Nad sempre apresentaram valores superiores às NNad. Tal fato sugere que esse comportamento seja resultado do desenvolvimento natural das avaliadas além do efeito do treinamento de natação, e ainda, que o VO2pico relativo pode não ser um indicador interessante para avaliar a aptidão aeróbia de crianças e jovens.

The main purpose of the present study was: a) to compare the variation values VO2peak variation between different female age-groups; b) to compare VO2peak values (absolute and relative), between female swimmers (Sw) and non-swimmers (NSw) for the same age-group. The sample was composed by seventy four female volunteers, ranging in age from 7 to 17 years (34Sw e 40NSw), and grouped in different ages: 7-10; 11-14; and 15-17 years, making six under groups: three groups composed entirely by female swimmers (Sw1, n=13; Sw2, n=12; Sw3, n=09), and three groups composed by non swimmers (NSw1, n=12; NSw2, n=14; NSw3, n=14), respectively. The VO2peak values were attained by the VO2000® gas analysis system and Inbrasport ATL® treadmill, using adapted Bruce protocol. The results pointed out an increment on absolute VO2peak values among the all age-groups considering NSw and Sw groups. The same was not observed for relative VO2peak values. The Sw always presented higher values in comparison with NSw. These findings suggest that this behavior is a result of natural development of the subjects’ more than swimming training. The results also suggest, that relative VO2peak can not to be considered a very pertinent to evaluate the aerobic fitness of children and adolescents.

OBJETIVO: Comparar os resultados do cálculo da velocidade de limiar anaeróbio (Lan), correspondente a 4mM de lactato, obtidos em testes de 2 x 400m (V4-2), 4 x 400m (V4-4) e a velocidade crítica (VC) relacionando-as com a velocidade média determinada no teste de 30 min (VMT30) em nadadoras adolescentes. METODOLOGIA: Participaram deste estudo 20 nadadoras (14,36 ± 1,22 anos; 52,75 ± 5,32kg; 159,97 ± 11,26cm; 22,5 ± 4,73% gordura corporal) de nível regional e estadual com pelo menos dois anos de treinamento sistemático. Testes realizados: Teste de 30 min (VMT30), Teste de duas distâncias (V4-2), Teste de quatro distâncias (V4-4) e Velocidade Crítica (VC). Análise estatística: o procedimento adotado para a comparação de todas as metodologias, duas a duas, foi a técnica de análise de regressão simples. RESULTADOS: As velocidades médias dos testes foram: VMT30: 1,12 ± 0,06m/s; V4-2: 1,14 ± 0,12m/s; V4-4: 1,12 ± 0,06m/s e a VC média: 1,14 ± 0,07m/s. Análise de regressão simples entre as metodologias duas a duas: V4-4 e V4-2 (r = 0,324), VC e V4-2 (r = 0,058), VMT30 e V4-2 (r = 0,595), VC e V4-4 (r = 0,807), VMT30 e V4-4 (r = 0,796) e VMT30 e VC (r = 0,677). As retas de regressão ajustadas apresentaram em relação à bissetriz os valores de p = 0,3060; 0,1716 e 0,0058. CONCLUSÕES: A determinação da VMT30 constitui-se em um bom instrumento para a prescrição de treinamento para as nadadoras estudadas, o que nem sempre ocorre com o modelo V4-2; a [La] de 4mM com quatro pontos e o cálculo do limiar de lactato através da técnica de efeitos aleatórios, mostrou-se viável para a determinação do Lan para as nadadoras, quando comparada com a VMT30; a VC e V4-4 apresentaram boa correlação assim como a VC e VMT30.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the results of the calculation of the anaerobic threshold velocity (AT), corresponding to 4 mM lactate, obtained in 2 x 400 m (V4-2), 4 x 400 m (V4-4) tests and critical velocity (CV) relating to the mean velocity determined in the 30 min test (VMT30) in female adolescent swimmers. METHODS: Twenty female swimmers (14.36 ± 1.22 years old; 52.75 ± 5.32 kg ; 159.97 ± 11.26 cm; % body fat 22.5 ± 4.73),with city and state level with at least two years of sistematic training participated in this study. Performed tests: 30 min test (MVT30), two-distance test (V4-2), four-distance test (V4-4) and critical velocity (CV). Statistical analysis: the procedure adopted to compare all methodologies, two by two, was the single regression analysis technique. RESULTS: The mean velocities were: T30: 1.12 ± 0.06 m/s; V4-2: 1.14 ± 0.12 m/s; V4-4: 1.12 ± 0.06 m/s and CV mean = 1.14 ± 0.07 m/s. Single regression analysis between metodologies, two by two: V4-4 and V4-2 (r = 0.324); CVand V4-2 (r = 0,058); MVT30 and V4-2 (r = 0.595); CV and V4-4 (r = 0.807); MVT30 and V4-4 (r = 0,796) and MVT30 and CV (r = 0,77). The adjusted regression lines presented in relation to the bisectrix the values of p = 0.3060; 0.1716 and 0.0058. CONCLUSIONS: The VMT30 determination is a good instrument for training prescription for the female adolescent swimmers studied, unlike the V4-2 model. The 4mM [La] with four points and lactate threshold calculation using random effects technique was useful for the AT determination in female adolescent swimmers, when compared to the MVT30; the CV and V4-4 presented a good correlation as well as the CV and MVT30.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study is to compare the values of the maximal oxygen uptake (<IMG SRC="/img/revistas/rbme/v9n3/17260s01.gif" WIDTH=10 HEIGHT=12>O2 max) during two consecutive bouts in Wingate tests for arms and legs in swimmers (S) and water polo players (WP). METHODS: Sample - seven national level athletes (4 S and 3 WP), age 17,90 ± 2,14 years, body mass 71,41 ± 6,84 kg, height 176,65 ± 7,02 cm, % body fat 13,23 ± 4,18. Two Wingate bouts with 30 sec each with 3 min interval between them, for arms and legs in alternated days. Oxygen uptake: breath-by-breath using the gas analysis system K4 b² Cosmed. Statistical analysis: Wilcoxon test for dependent variables and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for independent variables. RESULTS: The mean values found at the <IMG SRC="/img/revistas/rbme/v9n3/17260s01.gif" WIDTH=10 HEIGHT=12>O2 peak (P<IMG SRC="/img/revistas/rbme/v9n3/17260s01.gif" WIDTH=10 HEIGHT=12>O2), mean power (MP) and peak power (PP) for each bout of the Wingate test, for arms and legs. For Arms: P<IMG SRC="/img/revistas/rbme/v9n3/17260s01.gif" WIDTH=10 HEIGHT=12>O2 = 55.16 ± 5.72 ml.kg-1.min-1, MP = 5.28 ± 0.59 watts.kg-1 and PP = 6.71 ± 0.88 watts.kg-1 got in the first bout (1st Arms) and P<IMG SRC="/img/revistas/rbme/v9n3/17260s01.gif" WIDTH=10 HEIGHT=12>O2 = 60.12 ± 6.10 ml.kg-1.min-1, MP = 5.03 ± 0.40 watts.kg-1 and PP = 6.25 ± 0.51 watts.kg-1, got in the second bout (2nd Arms). For legs: P<IMG SRC="/img/revistas/rbme/v9n3/17260s01.gif" WIDTH=10 HEIGHT=12>O2 = 55.66 ± 6.85 ml.kg-1.min-1, MP = 4.75 ± 1.79 watts.kg-1 and PP = 7.44 ± 1.96 watts.kg-1 got in the first bout (1st Legs) and P<IMG SRC="/img/revistas/rbme/v9n3/17260s01.gif" WIDTH=10 HEIGHT=12>O2 = 62.09 ± 5.99 ml.kg-1.min-1, MP = 4.28 ± 1.47 watts.kg-1 and PP = 6.68 ± 1.63 watts.kg-1 got in the second bout (2nd Legs). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: All variables studied did not present significant difference among arms and legs, as much the first as the second bout for arms for P<IMG SRC="/img/revistas/rbme/v9n3/17260s01.gif" WIDTH=10 HEIGHT=12>O2 (p < 0.05). There was no difference between the PM mean values of the first and the second bout. But the mean of the second bout of legs was significant smaller than the first bout (p < 0.05). For the PP variable there was no difference among the mean values to the first and second bout as much for arms as for legs. It looks like to exist larger magnitude to O2 adjustment for arms than legs, that could be associated to specific demands to which S and WP athletes are daily submitted in their trainings.

O jogo de pólo aquático é uma modalidade de característica intermitente, disputada em quatro períodos de 7min com 2min de intervalo entre estes. Em caso de prorrogação, há um período de repouso de 5min e, a seguir, serão jogados dois períodos de 3min cada, com um intervalo de 1min para as equipes trocarem de lado. Para modalidades com estas características, tem sido sugerida a utilização da mensuração de lactato sanguíneo como indicador da solicitação metabólica. Em função disso, o presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar a concentração de lactato sanguíneo [La] imediatamente após cada um dos períodos de um jogo do Campeonato Paulista Infanto-Juvenil de 1999 (disputa de 3º lugar) e verificar se ocorre diferença na [La] entre os períodos e a prorrogação. Foram sujeitos deste estudo cinco atletas da equipe de nível estadual do Clube Internacional de Regatas (idade = 15,8 ± 0,4 anos; massa corporal = 71,5 ± 11,0kg e estatura = 180 ± 4cm). O sangue foi coletado no lóbulo da orelha e analisado pelo lactímetro Yellow Springs modelo 1500 Sport. Para a comparação da [La] entre os períodos foi utilizada a estatística não paramétrica de Kruskal-Wallis Anova. Os resultados da [La] não diferiram (qui-quadrado = 0,9615; gl = 4; p = 0,9156) entre os períodos (período 1 = 4,64 ± 1,21mM; período 2 = 5,08 ± 1,95mM; período 3 = 4,72 ± 1,33mM; período 4 = 4,32 ± 1,12mM; prorrogação = 4,11 ± 1,03mM). Os resultados indicam que a contribuição da glicólise anaeróbia não foi predominante, sugerindo haver solicitação do sistema anaeróbio aláctico (ATP-CP) nos momentos decisivos do jogo e do metabolismo aeróbio no intervalo entre as ações. Devido a carência de estudos dessa natureza relacionados a essa modalidade esportiva, é oportuna a elaboração de trabalhos subseqüentes que possam trazer informações mais conclusivas.

The water polo game is an sport event of intermittent characteristic, with four periods of 7 min and 2 min of interval between the periods. In cases of game extension, after a 5-min resting period, the game follows on with two game periods of 3 min each, with a 1-minute interval for the teams to change sides. In events with these characteristics, the use of blood lactate measurement has been suggested as an indicative of metabolic response. For this reason, the aim of the present study was to check blood lactate accumulation [La] immediately after each period of a game of the 1999 State Championship for Children and Adolescents (a game to classify the 3rd place in the Championship), and to verify if there are [La] differences between game periods and extension periods. The sample was made of five athletes of the Clube Internacional de Regatas Team (age = 15.8 + 0.4 years; body mass = 71.5 + 11.0 kg and height = 180 + 4 cm). Blood was drawn from the ear lobe and analyzed by a Yellow Springs model 1500 Sport analyzer. Kruskal-Wallis Oneway statistical analysis was used to compare [La] among the periods. The results of the [La] are not different (chi-square = 0.9615; p = 0.9156), in the different periods (period 1 = 4.64 + 1.21 mM; period 2 = 5.08 + 1.95 mM; period 3 = 4.72 + 1.33 mM; period 4 = 4.32 + 1.12 mM; extension = 4.11 + 1.03 mM). Results indicate low demand from the anaerobic glycolysis, and suggest that there is a higher demand from the anaerobic system (ATP-CP) in the decisive moments of the game, and from the aerobic metabolism in the interval between the periods. Due to the lack of studies involving water polo, the preparation of new papers that bring more conclusive information may be appropriate.
