Abstract Advances in manufacturing techniques have allowed more flexibility to the design and new possibilities to apply composites materials in lightweight structures. Novel techniques such as the automated fiber placement allow the fibers to follow curvilinear paths, making possible laminate properties that vary within the laminate plane. These types of laminates are known as variable stiffness laminates or variable angle tow. In this work, the maximum critical buckling load of composite panels with variable stiffness through a spatially varying fiber orientation has been analyzed for two different boundary conditions. This works compares the outcomes of in-plane stress and critical buckling load for linear and cubic fiber angle considering four aspect ratios. Manufacturing constraint has been considered in the analysis of the laminates. The finite element method has been applied to solve the system elliptic partial differential equations that govern the in-plane behavior of these panels. The Ritz method has been used to find the buckling loads for the variable stiffness panels. Results for four different aspects ratios are presented. Improvements in the buckling load of up to 18% for cubic fiber angle variation over linear fiber angle variation were found.

Abstract This work presents the effect of the high curvature to thickness ratio on the characteristics of Lamb Waves propagating over the skins of composite structures. It is accessed how the curvature on composite skins affects the group velocity of the symmetrical (S0) and asymmetrical (A0) wave modes. It is also accessed the gradient of curvature effect, when the wave propagates from a flat to a curved part on the skin. The results are intended to be used for the improvement of structural health monitoring of wings and wind turbine blades. This is accomplished through dynamic explicit linear finite element method simulations of plates with flat and curved parts made of Eglass-epoxy bidirectional laminate. As the skin structures are often designed to withstand torsional loads, the fibers are aligned with 45 degrees from the leading edge (curved region) throughout the analysis. Several skins with different curvature to thickness ratios are generated and simulated. Results and trends are presented and can be used to improve the algorithms for damage detection on those structures. It is shown that the group velocity of the incoming waves change considerably with the presence of curvature, for both main modes of vibration.

Abstract Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) cables, due to their outstanding performance in terms of specific stiffness and strength, are usually found in civil construction applications and, more recently, in the Oil & Gas sector. However, experimental data and theoretical solutions for these cables are very limited. On the contrary, several theoretical and numerical approaches are available for isotropic cables (metallic wire ropes), some of them with severe simplifications, nonetheless showing good agreement with experimental data. In this study, experimental tensile results for 1×7 CRFP cables were compared to a simplified analytical model (assumed transversally isotropic) and to a 3D finite element model incorporating the experimental uncertainty in important input parameters: longitudinal elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, static friction coefficient and ultimate tensile strain. The average experimental breaking load of the cable was 190.25 kN (coefficient of variation of 1.74%) and the agreement with the numerical model predictions were good, with an average-value deviation of –1.15%, which is lower than the experimental variations. The simplified analytical model yielded a discrepancy above 10%, indicating that it needs further refinement although much less time consuming than the numerical model. These conclusions were corroborated by statistical analyses (i.e. Kruskal–Wallis and Mann-Whitney).

Oral forces applied to human teeth during biting and mastication are normally described in the literature only in terms of their axial components. The purpose of this study was to fully determine the spatial characteristics of the oral resultant force - its normal and tangential components - for a given individual. A load cell was especially manufactured to measure oral force and was temporarily implanted as a prosthetic device in the dental arch of a volunteer, replacing his missing upper first molar. The mastication and occlusion tests were carried out in such a way the cell should withstand the loads applied to the molar, and its state of strain was recorded by strain gauges attached to it. Based on the results of these tests and using balance equations, normal and tangential components of the resultant oral force were determined. For direct occlusion, without interposition any obstacle between cusps, a peak normal force of 135 N was recorded simultaneously to a tangential force of 44 N. For mastication of biscuits, a peak normal force of 133 N and a tangential force of 39 N were obtained.
