Abstract This study aimed to identify and analyze the content developed in competitive Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG) sports initiation. We interviewed six coaches who worked in basic categories of medalist clubs in the 2019 Brazilian RG Championships. From the thematic analysis, five themes emerged: (1) Specialize versus Expand: factors that limit and contribute to physical-motor development in RG sports initiation; (2) Body positioning is a “rule” in RG; (3) Body difficulties: training to learn or training to compete?; (4) From an accessory element to an essential element: the valorization of RG's apparatus; (5) Within the rules and outside of training: The artistic component in RG. We suggest that the content must respect gymnasts’ characteristics, their health, long-term training, and their integral development. As they are children, results would not be a priority at this stage, and the content should be established based on the RG’s future vision.

Resumen El objetivo de este estudio ha sido identificar y analizar el contenido desarrollado en la iniciación deportiva competitiva de la Gimnasia Rítmica (GR). Entrevistamos a seis entrenadoras de las categorías de base de instituciones medallistas en al menos una categoría de los Campeonatos Brasileños de GR 2019. A través del análisis temático emergieron cinco temas: (1) Especializar versus ampliar: Factores que limitan y contribuyen al desarrollo físico-motor en la iniciación deportiva de la GR; (2) Posicionamiento corporal es “regla” en la GR; (3) Dificultades corporales: ¿entrenar para aprender o entrenar para competir?; (4) De elemento accesorio a elemento esencial: la valorización los aparatos de GR; (5) Dentro de las reglas y fuera del entrenamiento: el componente artístico en la GR. Sugerimos que el contenido respete las características, la salud, formación a largo plazo y desarrollo integral de las gimnastas. Al tratarse de niñas, los resultados no serían prioridad en esta etapa y el contenido debería apoyarse en la visión de futuro de la modalidad.

Resumo O objetivo do estudo foi investigar as experiências que contribuíram para a ascensão de uma treinadora brasileira de tênis no alto rendimento. Para isso, esta pesquisa descritiva de abordagem qualitativa foi orientada por meio de um estudo de caso único. No momento do estudo, Fernanda tinha 30 anos de idade e 12 anos de experiência como treinadora em nível nacional e internacional. Enquanto estratégias para a coleta dos dados, foram utilizados nesta ordem: a Rappaport timeline e a entrevista semiestruturada. A análise desses dados foi conduzida por meio das orientações da análise temática reflexiva. Os resultados versam pelos seguintes temas: (a) Influência, Conexão e Inspiração: Personagens Fundamentais; (b) Perfil Promissor e Acolhimento no Contexto; e (c) Desenvolvimento Enquanto Treinadora: Os Constantes Aprendizados e Questionamentos no Percurso. De modo geral, Fernanda teve uma trajetória orientada por relações de influência com personagens de seu contexto. Os momentos fora de sua zona de conforto contribuíram para a definição de estratégias que visem suprir as necessidades e avançar perante as barreiras identificadas.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar as concepções e princípios de prática de liderança de treinadores de alta performance do futebol brasileiro. Participaram do estudo, por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, cinco treinadores de futebol masculino que já atuaram na 1ª divisão brasileira, conquistando títulos estaduais e nacionais e com experiência em equipes e seleções estrangeiras. As principais evidências apontam para competências gerais, estratégias de gestão, conhecimento profissional, princípios e valores individuais. Conclui-se que os treinadores possuem conhecimento processual tácito instintivo que resulta numa filosofia de liderança desconexa e competências interpessoais mais evidentes. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to analyze the conceptions and leadership principles of high-performance coaches in Brazilian soccer. Participants were five male soccer coaches who have worked in the Brazilian first division, winning state and national titles, and having experience in international teams. Semi-structured interviews were performed. Main evidences show several competencies, management strategies, professional knowledge, principles, and personal values. We concluded that the coaches have tacit instinctive procedural knowledge that results in a disconnected leadership philosophy and interpersonal knowledge more evident. RESUMO Objetivou-se analisar as percepções de estudantes universitários de Educação Física em distintos níveis de progressão no curso, sobre o ambiente de ensino-aprendizagem na formação inicial. Participaram 273 estudantes (Bacharelado n=150; Licenciatura n=123) do curso de licenciatura em Educação Física de uma universidade pública de Santa Catarina, Brasil, os quais responderam à versão adaptada do Questionário de Avaliação do Ambiente Percebido da Formação Inicial em Educação Física. O teste Qui-quadrado foi utilizado para analisar as associações entre o nível de progressão discente nos cursos e suas percepções sobre o ambiente de formação inicial. Os resultados indicaram a predominância de aulas/vivências práticas e de avaliações teóricas escritas, especialmente nas fases iniciais. As experiências poucos frequentes de observação, e o aprendizado pela prática ou por observação foi o papel assumido, especialmente evidenciados nos semestres finais. Apesar de os estudantes terem se percebido ativos quanto ao seu nível de participação, indicaram que os professores são os principais responsáveis por tomar as decisões. Conclui-se que a formação inicial em Educação Física necessita reconfigurar determinadas práticas de ensino-aprendizagem para aumentar o envolvimento e a responsabilidade discentes pelo próprio processo formativo.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to analyze the perceptions of university Physical Education students at different progression levels in the programs regarding the teaching-learning environment in the initial training. In total, 273 students (Bachelor's program n = 150; Licentiate program n = 123) from the Licentiate Program in Physical Education of a public university in Santa Catarina, Brazil, participated in this study, responding to the adapted version of the Assessment Questionnaire of the Perceived Environment in the Initial Training in Physical Education. The Chi-square test was used to analyze the associations between the student progression levels in the programs and their perceptions about the initial training environment. The results indicated the predominance of practical classes/experiences and written theoretical evaluations, especially in the initial phases. The infrequent observation experiences and learning through practice or observation were the assumed roles, made evident primarily in the final semesters. Although the students perceived themselves as active regarding their participation levels, they indicated that the professors are the ones responsible for making the decisions. It is concluded that the initial training in Physical Education requires reconfiguring certain teaching-learning practices to increase student involvement and responsibility for their own training process.

Resumo A atividade física por meio do esporte organizado tem sido posicionada como uma ferramenta potencial não apenas para prevenir o acometimento de doenças crônico degenerativas, mas também para promover uma sociedade mais saudável. Contudo, ainda existe uma lacuna científica acerca da relação entre a participação no esporte competitivo no contexto de clubes e a promoção do desenvolvimento psicossocial e a saúde mental de jovens atletas. Assim, este estudo buscou analisar os efeitos da idade, tipo de esporte e nível de experiência no desenvolvimento psicossocial e na saúde mental de jovens atletas de um clube brasileiro. Os participantes foram 220 atletas adolescentes do sexo masculino (Média = 14,09 anos; DP = 2,21) de esportes individuais e coletivos. Os instrumentos incluíram o Questionário de Experiência Esportiva em Jovens - Português (P-YES-S) e o Contínuo de Saúde Mental - Short Form – Português (P-MHC-SF). Análises de correlação e regressão linear multinível foram realizadas. Os resultados indicaram uma correlação moderada entre os dois questionários. Para o P-YES-S, as estimativas do efeito do modelo mostraram variação para a idade na dimensão Habilidades Pessoais e Sociais e variações para o nível de experiência nas dimensões Habilidades Cognitivas e Experiências Negativas. Para o P-MHC-SF, as estimativas do efeito do modelo mostraram variação para a idade na dimensão Bem-estar Emocional e variação para o tipo de esporte nas dimensões Bem-Estar Social e Bem-Estar Psicológico. Mais pesquisas são necessárias para continuar examinando como as características da participação no esporte estão relacionadas ao desenvolvimento psicossocial e à saúde mental.

Abstract Physical activity occurring through organized sport has been positioned as an engaging manner not only to prevent chronic-degenerative diseases but also to promote healthier societies. However, there is a lack of evidence linking competitive sport participation in the club environment in promoting youth athletes’ psychosocial development and mental health. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the effects of age, sport type, and training experience on the psychosocial development and mental health of youth Brazilian club athletes. Participants were 220 male adolescent athletes (Mean =14.09 years; SD = 2.21) from individual and team sports. Instruments included the Portuguese Youth Experience Survey for Sport (P-YES-S) and the Portuguese Mental Health Continuum – Short Form (P-MHC-SF). Correlation and multilevel linear regression analyses were performed. The results indicated a moderated correlation between both questionnaires. For the P-YES-S, model effect estimations showed variation for age in the Personal and Social Skills dimension and variations for training experience in the Cognitive Skills and Negative Experiences dimensions. For the P-MHC-SF, model effect estimations showed variation for age in the Emotional Well Being dimension and variation for sport type in Social Well Being and Psychological Well Being dimensions. More research is needed to continue examining how characteristics of sport participation are related to psychosocial development and mental health.

The Chi-square test was used to analyze the associations between the level of student progression in the courses and their perceptions about the initial training environment. The results indicated the predominant use of classes/practical experiences and written theoretical assessments as teaching-learning strategies, especially in the early stages. The infrequent observation experiences, and learning through practice or observation was the role assumed, especially evidenced in the final semesters. Although students perceived their level of participation as being mostly active, they indicated that professors are primarily responsible for making decisions. We concluded that the initial formation in Physical Education in the investigated university needs to reconsider certain teaching-learning practices to increase student involvement and responsibility for the training process itself.

Resumo: O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a produção científica sobre o coaching nos esportes de aventura, de modo a identificar as características dos artigos, os direcionamentos metodológicos e as tendências temáticas. Para a obtenção dos artigos foi realizada uma revisão sistemática segundo as orientações do ENTREQ e PRISMA. Foram selecionados 24 artigos indexados nas bases de dados SciELO, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, PubMed e PsycINFO. Os artigos incluídos foram, em sua maioria, publicados nos últimos cinco anos e originários do Reino Unido. O método qualitativo foi o mais utilizado por meio da técnica de entrevista semiestruturada. Já as tendências temáticas dividiram-se em: atuação e desenvolvimento do treinador de esportes de aventura. Conclui-se que as características do ambiente de prática (ex.: risco e instabilidade) é o que influencia diretamente a atuação e o desenvolvimento do treinador. Apesar desta área ser recente, acredita-se que ela já apresenta conhecimentos de base para estudos futuros .

Abstract: This study analyzes scientific articles on coaching in adventure sports in order to identify their characteristics, methodological foci, and thematic trends. We performed a systematic review in accordance with ENTREQ and PRISMA guidelines to select 24 articles indexed on Scielo, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, PubMed, and PsycINFO. Most of the articles selected had been published in the last five years and the authors were from the UK. Qualitative methods were used more frequently through semi-structured interviews. Thematic trends were divided into adventure sports coaches’ work and development. We concluded that features of the environment of practice - e.g., risk and instability - are the main factor influencing coaches’ performance and development. Despite being a recent field, the body of knowledge published supports future studies to be conducted.

Resumen: El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la producción científica sobre el coaching en los deportes de aventura, con fin de identificar las características de los artículos, las directrices metodológicas y las tendencias temáticas. Para obtener los artículos, se realizó una revisión sistemática de acuerdo con las pautas de ENTREQ y PRISMA. Se seleccionaron 24 artículos indexados en las bases de datos Scielo, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, PubMed y PsycINFO. La mayoría de los artículos incluidos fueron publicados en los últimos cinco años y se originaron en el Reino Unido. El método más utilizado fue el cualitativo, mediante entrevistas semiestructuradas. Las tendencias temáticas se dividieron en: actuación y desarrollo del entrenador de deportes de aventura. Se concluye que las características del entorno de práctica (riesgo e inestabilidad) es lo que influye directamente en el desempeño y desarrollo del entrenador. Aunque es un área reciente, se cree que ya presenta conocimientos de base para estudios futuros.

RESUMO O esporte tem sido apontado como uma ferramenta valiosa para promover o desenvolvimento positivo de jovens (DPJ). Além disso, o desenvolvimento de life skills destaca-se por auxiliar jovens a ter sucesso dentro e fora do contexto esportivo. Devido as discussões limitadas no Brasil acerca do DPJ e das life skills tanto no âmbito científico quanto na estruturação de programas esportivos, este ensaio teórico tem como objetivo fornecer entendimentos iniciais a acadêmicos, treinadores e gestores esportivos sobre as concepções que sustentam estas temáticas e como integrá-las no esporte brasileiro. Assim, após explorar as concepções e definições acerca do DPJ e das life skills e as abordagens para o desenvolvimento no esporte, os autores apresentam uma proposta baseada em três princípios e cinco procedimentos. Os princípios incluem: (a) reflita e desenvolva sua filosofia; (b) cultive um clima positivo e (c) desenvolva relações significativas com seus atletas. Já os procedimentos são: (1) selecione e discuta a life skill do dia; (2) pratique a life skill selecionada; (3) integre a life skill com as atividades do treino; (4) discuta e reflita a aplicação e transferência da life skill para outros contextos e (5) crie oportunidades para facilitar a transferência da life skill. Exemplos práticos são fornecidos ao longo da proposta para auxiliar treinadores na aplicação ao esporte.

ABSTRACT Sport has been identified as a favourable tool for promoting positive youth development (PYD). Moreover, the development of life skills is highlighted for supporting youth to thrive in and beyond sport. Due to the limited discussions in Brazil regarding PYD and life skills both in research and in the structuring of sport programs, this paper aims to provide understanding to scholars, coaches, and sport stakeholders on the foundations of PYD and life skills and on how to integrate them within Brazilian sport contexts. Thus, after exploring the foundations and definitions related to PYD and life skills and the approaches to their facilitation in sport, the authors present a proposal based on three principles and five procedures. The principles include: (a) reflect and develop your philosophy, (b) cultivate a positive climate, and (c) develop meaningful relationships with your athletes. Further, the five procedures are: (1) select and discuss the life skill of the day; (2) practice the selected life skill, (3) integrate the life skill during the practice, (4) discuss and reflect on the life skill application and transfer to other contexts, and (5) create opportunities to facilitate life skills transfer. Practical examples are provided throughout the proposal to support coaches in applying these concepts in sport.

RESUMO De modo a superar as limitações e percepções negativas atribuídas por treinadores esportivos aos programas de formação, estudos recentes têm contribuído com importantes direcionamentos para seu aprimoramento. Assim, por meio da análise de artigos científicos publicados entre 2009 e 2015, este estudo buscou identificar as estratégias de ensino adotadas em programas de formação de treinadores de pequena escala, larga escala e universitários. A busca automática por artigos foi realizada nas bases de dados PUBMED, SCOPUS, Web of Science, PyscNET e SPORTDiscus, e a busca manual realizou-se em dois periódicos não indexados. Na busca inicial foram encontrados 731 estudos e, por meio da aplicação dos critérios de exclusão estabelecidos, 16 foram selecionados. Os resultados indicam que a maior parte dos estudos concentra-se nos programas universitários. Com relação às estratégias de ensino utilizadas, percebeu-se, de maneira geral, a utilização de estratégias que priorizam o engajamento dos treinadores esportivos em atividades que envolvem discussões em grupo e a reflexão. Com base nos artigos analisados verificou-se que as estratégias de ensino adotadas nos programas de formação de treinadores apontam pela tendência da adoção de abordagens centradas no aprendiz (treinadores), indo ao encontro das orientações internacionais para o aperfeiçoamento e a efetividade destas iniciativas.

ABSTRACT In order to overcome the limitations and negative perceptions often addressed to coach education programs, the sports coaching literature has offered important contributions for its improvement. Thus, through analyzing scientific articles published between 2009 and 2015, this study aimed to identify the teaching strategies adopted in small-scale, large-scale, and university-based programs. An automatic search for articles was conducted in the following databases: PUBMED, SCOPUS, Web of Science, PyscNET, and SPORTDiscus. Manual search was conducted in two non-indexed peer-reviewed journals. Afterwards, 731 articles were found and 16 were selected by applying the established criteria. The results indicated that most of the studies selected took place in a university-based context. In relation to the teaching strategies adopted, we verified a common intent to engage coaches in group discussions and reflection activities. Based on the articles analyzed, we suggest that the teaching strategies adopted in coach education programs indicate a trend towards learner-centered approaches (coach-centered), meeting the international guidelines for the improvement and effectiveness of these endeavors.

Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar a percepção de estudantes-treinadores a respeito da contribuição das atividades de aprendizagem durante sua formação em um curso de bacharelado em educação física. Participaram do estudo oito estudantes. A coleta de dados ocorreu por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas e, na análise dos dados, seguiram-se as seis etapas da análise temática indutiva. A variedade de percepções sobre as atividades experienciadas enfatiza a aprendizagem como um processo individual baseado no conhecimento e na experiência prévia. Apesar de os estudantes apreciarem as situações de aprendizagem proporcionadas pelas disciplinas teórico-práticas, situações de aprendizagem experiencial parecem ser mais significativas devido à possibilidade de enfrentar problemas reais.

Abstract The aim of this study was to analyze the student-coaches’ perceptions of their learning activities experienced during their formation on the bachelor program of Physical Education. Eight students with intentions to become sports coaches participated. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. For analyzing data, we followed the six steps of inductive thematic analysis. The variety of perceptions about the different activities experienced emphasizes learning as an individual process based on prior knowledge and experience. Although student-coaches appreciated the theoretical-practical courses, experiential learning situations seem to be more significant because they have the chance to face real-world experiences, problems, and dilemmas.

El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar las percepciones de estudiantes-entrenadores sobre la contribución de las actividades de aprendizaje durante la carrera de educación física. Ocho estudiantes que se formaban para ser entrenadores participaron en el estudio. Se recopilaron datos en entrevistas semiestructuradas y el análisis de los datos siguió las seis etapas del análisis temático inductivo. La variedad de percepciones sobre las actividades experimentadas hace hincapié en el aprendizaje como un proceso individual basado en el conocimiento y la experiencia previos. Aunque los estudiantes apreciaron las clases teórico-prácticas, al parecer las situaciones de aprendizaje basadas en la experiencia son más relevantes debido a la posibilidad de enfrentarse a problemas reales.

Abstract Aim: This study aimed to compare the quality of life perception among Boccia, Para-Athletics, and Wheelchair Tennis athletes. Methods: Eighty-six athletes with physical disabilities participated (Boccia = 41; Para Athletics = 14; Wheelchair Tennis = 31) in the study. The data were collected by applying the Brazilian Portuguese version of the WHOQOL-Bref questionnaire and a short survey for demographics. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the relationship among the variables considering a confidence level of 95%. Results: Wheelchair Tennis athletes were older and Para-Athletics athletes were involved in this sport for a longer period. The majority of participants perceived positively their overall quality of life and health. Wheelchair Tennis athletes presented higher total quality of life perception scores in comparison to Boccia athletes. Regarding the specific domains of quality of life, Para-Athletics athletes presented higher scores in the psychological domain in comparison to Boccia and Wheelchair Tennis. Wheelchair Tennis presented higher social scores in comparison to Boccia and higher environment scores in comparison to Boccia and Para-Athletics. No differences were found in the physical domain in all groups. Conclusion: The evidence points to the influence of athletes’ demographics, the specific nuances of their impairments, and the Paralympic Sports practiced in perceiving the quality of life. Suggestions are made to further explore the factors that may influence the quality of life perception among Paralympic Sports athletes.

RESUMO A coletividade do San Antonio Spurs (SAS) e o jogo liderado por três atletas do Miami Heat (MIA) marcaram as finais da NBA de 2014. O objetivo desta investigação foi analisar as ações ofensivas coletivas nestes jogos. Os indicadores de jogo foram obtidos por meio dos box-scores oficiais da NBA e a análise das ações de jogo foram coletadas por meio de uma versão adaptada do IAD-BB. Os indicadores de arremessos convertidos, assistências e pontuação total apresentaram associação significativa entre as equipes, onde a equipe do SAS apresentou escores superiores ao MIA. Enquanto que o SAS apresentou frequência absoluta superior de ataques com três a cinco e seis a oito passes, o MIA apresentou maior número de ataques com zero a dois passes. Identificou-se associação significativa das condições de arremesso entre as equipes, sendo superior o número de arremessos em condições facilitadas e livres para o SAS e arremessos em condições pressionadas para o MIA. Não houve associação significativa na eficácia dos arremessos. Acredita-se que o maior número de arremessos convertidos, assistências, pontuação total e a maior frequência de ataques com elevados números de passes podem ser considerados os fatores determinantes para o sucesso do SAS nos jogos investigados.

ABSTRACT The San Antonio Spurs (SAS) teamwork and the team led by three players of the Miami Heat (MIA) marked the 2014 NBA finals. This study aimed to analyze the offensive actions on those games. Game indicators were obtained through the official NBA box-scores and game analysis took place through an adapted version of the IAD-BB. Field goals made, assists, and total points presented significant association between the teams, in which the SAS presented higher scores in comparison to the MIA. While the SAS presented a significantly higher absolute frequency of offenses with three to five and six to eight passes made, the MIA had a higher number of offenses with zero to two passes made. Significant association was identified for the shooting conditions between the teams, in which the SAS presented a higher number of shots under ‘passively guarded’ and wide-open conditions, whereas the MIA had a higher number of shots under pressure. However, neither teams’ shooting efficacy indicated a significant association. We belive that the higher number of field goals made, assists, total score, and a higher frequency of offenses with a bigger number of passes can be considered the determining factors for the SAS success in the games investigated.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relation between gender and physical education teachers’ wellbeing in southern Brazil, considering the socio-environmental (job satisfaction) and individual (lifestyle) parameters. A total of 1653 teachers (741 men and 912 women) in the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul were surveyed. The instruments used for data collection were QVT-PEF and PEVI, as well as a socio-demographic and professional questionnaire. The results confirm findings concerning dissatisfaction of physical education teachers regarding remuneration, work conditions, job autonomy, work and total life space as well as an overload in women’s daily lives. In relation to lifestyle, women showed better eating habits; however, they also showed lower levels of positive behaviour in the components of relationships, and stress control. Therefore, the authors point out to implementation of public policies to ensure more equitable treatment regarding gender issues in the work environment, as well as regarding physical education teachers’ personal aspects.

Abstract Aims This study aimed to identify Brazilian wheelchair tennis athletes' quality of life and to compare the perception scores between competitive and elite athletes. Methods Participants were wheelchair tennis athletes (N = 31) from Brazil (males = 25, females = 6) divided into two groups: competitive and elite. Data was collected using the Brazilian version of the WHOQOL-Bref. The WHOQOL-Bref asks two general questions, and is thereafter divided into four main domains: 1) physical, psychological, social, and environment, which give us an understanding of their overall quality of life perception. Results The results showed that overall, 29 out of the 31 athletes perceived their quality of life positively, regardless of the competitive level. However, statistically higher perceptions were found in the physical domain and the total score of quality of life of the elite group. Conclusion The findings of this study suggest that even though participation in high-performance adapted sports may offer a stressful and exhausting environment, elite wheelchair tennis athletes from Brazil perceive themselves as having a better QoL than competitive athletes.

Abstract AIMS The main objective of this study was to analyze the factors that preceded field goals made in the 2014 NBA finals considering the number of passes per offense, shooting conditions, and offense type variables. METHODS We assessed field goals attempted by 27 professional players that participated in the 2014 NBA finals. Data were collected by three researchers through an adapted version of the Technical-Tactical Performance Evaluation Tool in Basketball to systematically analyze all five games of those finals. Descriptive analysis consisted in absolute and relative frequency and inferential statistics were applied through Chi-Square test, Cohen’s D for effect size, and binary logistic regression test. Significance levels were set at 5% and all statistics were applied through SPSS 23.0. RESULTS Shooting efficacy was not associated with the number of passes made per offense. Regression statistics showed that shooting efficacy was highly associated with shooting condition rather than the offense type performed. However, fast breaks seem to lead to better shooting conditions (passively guarded and wide open) when compared to set and regained offenses. CONCLUSION Evidence pointed to the importance of shooting condition as a determining factor in increasing the probability of field goals made throughout the games analyzed.
