Resumo Shewanella xiamenensis G5-03 isolada de solo contaminado de aterro sanitário foi eficiente em descolorir cinco corantes têxteis azos em condições estáticas. Um deles, Reactive Red 239 (RR239), foi completamente descolorido na faixa de pH de 7 a 11 (a 35°C) dentro de 3-6 h. A bactéria também foi eficiente em descolorir RR239 em uma ampla faixa de temperatura de 25-40°C (em pH 8). A cinética de descoloração do RR239 pela G5-03 se ajustou ao modelo de Michaelis-Menten (K m = 443,3 mg L-1, V max = 166,7 mg L-1 h-1). A descoloração do RR239 foi monitorada por espectroscopia UV-Vis e FTIR, que mostrou mudanças significativas nas posições dos picos quando comparadas ao espectro do corante. No geral, a capacidade de S. xiamenensis G5-03 para descolorir os corantes têxteis azo em uma ampla faixa de temperatura e pH (neutro-alcalino) indica que esta cepa é uma candidata em potencial para o tratamento de efluente contendo corante.

Abstract Shewanella xiamenensis G5-03 isolated from contaminated landfill soil efficiently decolorized five textile azo dyes under static conditions. One of them, Reactive Red 239 (RR239), was completely decolorized at a pH range of 7 to 11 (at 35°C) within 3-6 h. The bacterium was also efficiently decolorized RR239 in a wide temperature range of 25-40°C (at pH 8). The kinetics of RR239 decolorization by G5-03 fitted to the Michaelis-Menten Model (K m = 443.3 mg L-1, V max = 166.7 mg L-1 h-1). The decolorization of RR239 was monitored by UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy, which showed significant changes in peak positions when compared to the dye spectrum. Overall, the ability of S. xiamenensis G5-03 to decolorize textile azo dyes in a wide range of temperatures and pH (neutral-alkaline) indicate that this strain is a potential candidate for treating dye-containing effluent.

Resumo Neste estudo, compósitos de MnO2-levedura de pão, produzidos pela oxidação direta da levedura com KMnO4 sob condições ácidas, foram usados como biossorvente para remover o corante trifenilmetano verde Malaquita (VM) de solução aquosa. Os parâmetros que influenciam o processo de adsorção tais como pH, tempo de contato, temperatura, concentração inicial do corante e concentração do biossorvente foram avaliados em experimentos de bancada. As condições ótimas de descoloração foram observadas em pH 10 e concentração de biomassa igual a 1,0 g L-1. Os resultados de remoção do corante foram ajustados ao modelo cinético de pseudo segunda ordem. O processo de adsorção foi descrito pelo modelo isotérmico de Langmuir e a capacidade máxima de biossorção foi estimada em 243,9 mg g-1 (na temperatura de 25°C). Os valores negativos de ∆G° e valores positivos de ∆H° indicaram que a biossorção do VM pelo compósito MnO2-levedura é espontâneo e endotérmico. A técnica de espectroscopia no infravermelho com transformada de Fourier indicou que nanopartículas de MnO2 depositadas na superfície do compósito MnO2-levedura facilitaram a adsorção do VM. Concluiu-se que o compósito MnO2-levedura de pão possui potencial para ser usado como adsorvente na remoção de VM de solução aquosa.

Abstract In this study, baker’s yeast-MnO2 composites, produced by direct oxidation of yeast with KMnO4 under acidic conditions, were used as biosorbent to remove the triphenylmethane dye Malachite green (MG) from an aqueous solution. Parameters that influence the adsorption process, such as pH, contact time, temperature, initial dye concentration and biosorbent dosage, were evaluated in batch experiments. The optimum removal of MG was found to be 86.7 mg g-1 at pH 10, 1.0 g L-1 of biomass dosage and 45°C. The kinetic data of dye removal was better described by the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum biosorption capacity was estimated to be 243.9 mg g-1 (at 25°C). The negative values of ∆G° and the positive value of ∆H° indicated that the MG biosorption onto yeast-MnO2 composites is spontaneous and endothermic. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that the nano-MnO2 particles deposited on yeast-MnO2 composites surface facilitated the MG adsorption. It was concluded that baker’s yeast-MnO2 composites have potential for application as adsorbent for removal of MG from aqueous solution.

ABSTRACT This study investigated the biosorption of the anionic textile dyes: Reactive Red 239 (RR239), Reactive Black B (RBB) and Direct Blue 85 (DB85) according to pH, biomass dosage, contact time and dye concentration onto waste beer yeast slurry. The kinetics and isotherm of the removal of dyes were also studied. The equilibrium of biosorption reaction was reached after 30 min for the reactive dyes and after 60 min for the direct dye. Optimum decolorization was observed at pH 2 and 0.63 g/L of biomass dosage. The kinetic data of the three dyes were better described by the pseudo second-order model. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm model and the biosorption capacity being estimated to be 152.9, 162.7 and 139.2 mg/g for RR239, RBB and DB85, respectively. Our findings indicated that the waste beer yeast slurry was an attractive low-cost biosorbent for the removal of anionic textile dyes from aqueous solution.
