ABSTRACT: Phytoregulators have been used as grapevine defoliants in cluster zones to manage and improve grape quality and production. The present study evaluated the effect of the phytoregulator ethephon on the grapevine defoliation of the cluster region, Botrytis bunch rot (BBR) epidemiology, and the viticultural performance of ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’, during the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 growing seasons, in the highland region of the Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil. Ethephon was applied in the bunch region of both sides of the grapevine vegetative canopy, at the phenological stage of beginning of ripening (BBCH-81) in five active ingredient doses (0 mg L-1 (control); 720 mg L-1; 1,440 mg L-1; 2,160 mg L-1; and 2,880 mg L-1), following a randomized block design with four replications and five plants per replication. The following parameters were evaluated: BBR epidemiology, vegetative, productive, and technological and phenolic maturation. The increasing ethephon doses significantly reduced the linear leaf drop and affected the technological and phenolic grape maturation parameters, improving the must pH, total polyphenols, color 420, 520, and 620 ղm, color intensity (°hue angle), and anthocyanin, and reducing the total solubre solids in the ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ grapevine. However, this significant effect on the linear leaf drop and the technological and phenolic maturation parameters did not interfere with other vegetative, productive, and BBR epidemiology parameters evaluated in the edaphoclimatic conditions of the highland region of southern Brazil.

RESUMO: Fitorreguladores tem sido usado como desfolhante na região dos cachos de videira no processo de manejo para melhoria da qualidade e produção de uva. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar o efeito do fitorregulador etefon na desfolha localizada na região dos cachos, a epidemiologia da podridão cinzenta de cachos (PCC) e desempenho vitícola da cultivar “Cabernet Sauvignon”, durante as safras 2018/2019 e 2019/2020, na região de altitude do estado de Santa Catarina, sul do Brasil. O etefon foi aplicado na região dos cachos nos dois lados da copa vegetativa, no estádio fenológico de início da maturação (BBCH 81) em cinco doses do ingrediente ativo (0 mg L-1 (control); 720 mg L-1; 1,440 mg L-1; 2,160 mg L-1; and 2,880 mg L-1), seguindo um delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições e cinco plantas por repetições. Foram avaliados os parâmetros da epidemiologia da PCC e parâmetros vegetativos, produtivos e maturação tecnológica e fenólica. O aumento das doses de ethephon significativamente reduziu a queda linear de folhas na região dos cachos e afetou os parâmetros tecnológicos e fenológicos de maturação, melhorando o pH do mosto, polifenóis totais, coloração a 420, 520 e 630 nm, intensidade de cor (angulo °hue), antocianina e reduziu os sólidos solúveis totais na cultivar ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’. Contudo, este efeito significativo na queda linear das folhas e nos parâmetros tecnológicos e fenológicos não houve interferência com os outros parâmetros vegetativos, produtivos e epidemiológicos da PCC, avaliados nas condições edafoclimáticas de regiões de altitude do sul do Brasil.

RESUMO: O estado de Santa Catarina é o segundo maior produtor de sementes de arroz do Brasil. As pesquisas com bactérias fitopatogênicas nesta cultura são escassas e a alta frequência de doenças da panícula leva à hipótese de que sementes podem estar infectadas por bactérias. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi quantificar a incidência de bactérias nas sementes, verificar a viabilidade das bactérias durante o período de armazenamento e caracterizar as bactérias associadas. Foram analisadas sementes das safras 2018/19 e 2019/20. Para verificar a incidência, as sementes foram desinfestadas, plaqueadas em meio de cultura ágar nutriente + fungicida e incubadas por sete dias a 27 °C. Para avaliar a viabilidade, a cada 45 dias, três cultivares armazenadas em uma unidade de beneficiamento foram submetidas à mesma metodologia de detecção. Para caracterizar, colônias prevalentes foram isoladas em meio de cultura semisseletivo Pantoea genus-specific ágar (PGSA), onde as que apresentaram crescimento foram submetidas à extração do ácido desoxirribonucléico (DNA) e Reação em Cadeia da Polimerase (PCR), sequenciamento do DNA e comparação de sequências no GenBank. A reação de hipersensibilidade (HR) em tabaco foi realizada utilizando uma suspensão bacteriana de cada isolado. Todas as amostras de sementes apresentaram incidência média de 83%. Durante o armazenamento, as sementes mantiveram viabilidade bacteriana estável, com incidência média de 95% no início do armazenamento e 99% ao fim. Todos os isolados que cresceram no meio de cultura PGSA, foram identificados por caracterização molecular com 100% de identidade com dois espécimes de Pantoea ananatis e um deles induziu HR em tabaco.

ABSTRACT: The state of Santa Catarina is the second-largest producer of rice seeds in Brazil. Research on phytopathogenicbacterias in this crop is scarce and the high frequency of panicle diseases leads to the hypothesis that seeds may be infected by bacteria. This research quantified the incidence of bacteria in the seeds, verified the bacteria viability during the storage period and characterized the associated bacteria. Seeds from the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons were analyzed. To check the incidence, the seeds were disinfected, plated on a nutrient agar + fungicide culture medium, and incubated for seven days at 27 °C. To assess viability, every 45 days, three cultivars stored in a processing unit were subjected to the same detection methodology. To characterize, prevalent colonies were isolated on semi-selective culture medium Pantoea genus-specific agar (PGSA), where the ones that showed growth were subjected to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) extraction and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), DNA sequencing, and sequence comparison on GenBank. The hypersensitivity reaction (HR) in tobacco was performed using a bacterial suspension of each isolate. All seed samples had an average incidence of 83%. During storage, the seeds maintained stable bacterial viability, with an average incidence of 95% at the beginning of storage and 99% at the end of it. All isolates that grew in PGSA culture medium were identified by molecular characterization with 100% identity with two specimens of Pantoeaananatis and one of them induced RH in tobacco.

RESUMO: O fungo Microdochium albescens pode interferir na germinação de sementes e na emergência de plântulas de arroz, porém não há indicação técnica para seu controle via tratamento de semente. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a eficiência de fungicidas em tratamento de sementes de arroz pré-germinado e sequeiro no controle de M. albescens. Sementes das cultivares Epagri 109, SCS116 Satoru, SCS121 CL e SCS122 Miura foram tratadas com os seguintes fungicidas (g i.a./100 kg de sementes): fluazinam + tiofanato metílico (9,45 + 63), piraclostrobina + tiofanato metílico (5 + 45), carboxina + tiram (60 + 60), metalaxil-M + tiabendazol + fludioxonil (3 + 22,5 + 3,75), carbendazim + tiram (45 + 105), carbendazim (45). Sementes sem tratamento com fungicida constituíram a testemunha. As sementes tratadas foram semeadas em meio de cultura de batata-sacarose-ágar (BSA) e incubadas a 25 ± 2°C e fotoperíodo de 12 horas por 14 dias. Sementes tratadas também foram submetidas ao teste de germinação. Fluazinam + tiofanato metílico e metalaxil-M + tiabendazol + fludioxonil apresentaram maior controle de M. albescens, não diferindo estatisticamente entre si, nas cinco cultivares e nos dois sistemas de cultivo. Contudo, os fungicidas testados proporcionaram germinação das sementes superior a 90% nas quatro cultivares.

ABSTRACT: The fungus Microdochium albescens can interfere in the germination of seeds and in the death of rice seedlings; however, there is not technical indication for its control by seed treatment. This research evaluated the efficiency of fungicides in the treatment of pre-germinated and dryland rice seeds in the control of M. albescens. Seeds of the cultivars, Epagri 109, SCS116 Satoru, SCS121 CL and SCS122 Miura were treated with the following fungicides (g a.i./100 kg of seeds): fluazinam + thiophanate methyl (9.45 + 63), pyraclostrobin + thiophanate methyl (5 + 45), carboxin + thiram (60 + 60), metalaxyl-M + thiabendazole + fludioxonil (3 + 22.5 + 3.75), carbendazim + thiram (45 + 105), carbendazim (45). Seeds without fungicide treatment constituted the control. The treated seeds were sown in potato-sucrose-agar (PSA) culture medium and incubated at 25 ± 2 °C and photoperiod of 12 hours for 14 days. Treated seeds were also submitted to the germination test. Fluazinam + thiophanate methyl and metalaxyl-M + thiabendazole + fludioxonil showed greater control of M. albescens, not differing statistically between them, in the five cultivars and in the two cultivation systems. The tested fungicides provided seed germination above 90% in the four cultivars.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar a viabilidade de Microdochium albescens em sementes de arroz irrigado armazenadas durante a entressafra e quantificar sua incidência nas estruturas de sementes. Foram coletadas mensalmente amostras de sementes de arroz irrigado dos cultivares SCS122 Miura e SCS121 CL, armazenadas durante a entressafra 2018/19. A análise de patologia e quantificação de viabilidade foram realizadas em laboratório. A determinação da localização do fungo nas sementes foi quantificada separando-se lema, pálea, endosperma e embrião, com subsequente desinfestação e semeadura em meio de cultura. O fungo M. albescens apresentou durante nove meses viabilidade de armazenamento de sementes de 77,8%, considerando-se a média dos lotes e cultivares. A incidência média na lema foi de 48%, pálea 43,7%, endosperma 24,7% e embrião 20,7%. O fungo M. albescens mantém a viabilidade em sementes de arroz na entressafra e o micélio é detectado com maior incidência nos tecidos externos da cariopse.

ABSTRACT The aims of this study were to quantify the viability of Microdochium albescens in irrigated rice seeds stored during the time between harvests and to quantify its incidence in the seed structures. Samples of irrigated rice seeds of the cultivars SCS122 Miura and SCS121 CL were monthly collected and stored during the time between harvests 2018/19. Pathology analysis and viability quantification were performed in the laboratory. The location of the fungus in the seeds was determined by separating lemma, palea, endosperm and embryo, with subsequent disinfestation and sowing in culture medium. The fungus M. albescens showed 77.8% seed storage viability for nine months, considering the average of lots and cultivars. Average incidence was 48% in the lemma, 43.7% in the palea, 24.7% in the endosperm and 20.7% in the embryo. The fungus M. albescens remains viable in rice seeds between harvests, while mycelium is detected at a higher incidence in the external tissues of caryopsis.

RESUMO: Physalis rugose mosaic virus (PhyRMV) causa danos severos em Physalis peruviana L., afetando características vegetativas, a quantidade e qualidade de frutos. Os objetivos desse estudo consistem na caracterização molecular do PhyRMV associado a P. peruviana coletada em campos de produção em Lages, Santa Catarina, Brasil; e avaliar a transmissão do vírus por sementes. Plantas apresentando sintomas de mosaico, deformação e nanismo foram coletadas de P. peruviana. Amostras foliares dessas plantas foram utilizadas para extração de RNA de fita dupla, síntese de biblioteca de cDNA e sequenciamento de alto rendimento. No experimento de transmissão, sementes obtidas de plantas infectadas por PhyRMV foram utilizadas, e a infecção viral nas plântulas foi avaliada por inspeção visual de sintomas e diagnóstico molecular. O RNA viral apresentou 4162 nucleotideos (nts), a organização genômica foi similar à de outros sobemovírus e apresentou 97% de identidade de nucleotídeos com o isolado de Piracicaba de PhyRMV previamente caracterizado. Os resultados obtidos sugerem que é improvável a transmissão de PhyRMV por sementes de physalis.

ABSTRACT: Physalis rugose mosaic virus (PhyRMV) causes severe damage to Physalis peruviana L., affecting vegetative parameters, fruit quantity and quality. The aim of this study was to perform a molecular characterization of PhyRMV associated with P. peruviana from commercial fields in the municipality of Lages, Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil, and to evaluate its transmission by seeds. Plants displaying mosaic, dwarfism, and leaf malformation symptoms were collected from P. peruviana. Double-stranded RNA was extracted and submitted to cDNA library synthesis and high-throughput sequencing (HTS). For the virus transmission assay, seeds from PhyRMV-infected plants were used, and viral infection in seedlings was verified using symptomatic and molecular diagnosis. PhyRMV RNA has 4162 nucleotides (nts) and a genomic organization similar to that of other sobemoviruses and shares 97% nt identity with the previously characterized PhyRMV Piracicaba isolate. Results indicated the unlikely transmission of PhyRMV by physalis seeds.

RESUMO: O conhecimento do efeito do inóculo na semente é importante para conhecimento do nível de tolerância do patógeno pela semente. Objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da incidência do fungo Microdochium allbescens sobre a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de diferentes cultivares de arroz irrigado. O estudo foi realizado nos laboratórios de análises de sementes (LAS), fitopatologia e na casa de vegetação, localizados no Centro de Ciências Agroveterinárias da Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina, Lages, SC. Utilizaram-se sementes de seis cultivares de arroz irrigado produzidas na Região do Alto Vale do Itajaí na safra 2016/17. Os lotes foram submetidos ao teste de sanidade de sementes, identificando-se quatro lotes por cultivar com incidência natural de M. albescens, sendo designados dois lotes de cada cultivar com incidência superior a 40% e dois lotes igual ou inferior a 40%, totalizando 24 lotes de sementes. Foram realizadas as seguintes avaliações nos lotes: germinação, teste de envelhecimento acelerado, emergência em casa de vegetação aos 14 dias, índice de velocidade de emergência (IVE), velocidade de emergência (VE), comprimento de parte aérea, comprimento de raiz e massa seca. Houve interação significativa entre cultivar e nível de incidência apenas nas variáveis germinação, vigor e comprimento de raiz. A massa fresca, comprimento da parte aérea e IVE não foram afetados, independente do cultivar e incidência do fungo na semente. Os cultivares de arroz irrigado SCS118 Marquês e SCSBRS Tio Taka são suscetíveis à alta incidência (> 40%) do fungo M. albescens.

ABSTRACT: Knowledge of the effect of the seedborne inoculum is important for knowing the level of tolerance of the pathogen by the seed. This research evaluated the effect of the incidence of the fungus Microdochium albescens on the physiological quality of the seeds of different cultivars of irrigated rice. The study was carried out in the seed testing laboratory (STL), phytopathology laboratory and in greenhouse, located at the Center of Agroveterinary Sciences of the Santa Catarina State University, Lages, SC, Brazil. Seeds from six irrigated rice cultivars produced in the Alto Vale do Itajaí Region in the 2016/17 harvest, were used. The lots were submitted to the seed health test, identifying four lots per cultivar with a natural incidence of M. albescens, with two lots of each cultivar with an incidence greater than 40% and two lots equal or less than 40%, totaling 24 seed lots. The following evaluations were carried out on the lots: germination, accelerated aging test, emergence in a greenhouse at 14 days, emergence speed index (ESI), emergence speed (ES), shoot length, root length and fresh and dry mass. There was a significant interaction between cultivar and level of incidence only in the variables germination, vigor and root length. Fresh mass, shoot length and ESI were not affected, regardless of cultivar and incidence of fungus in the seed. The irrigated rice cultivars SCS118 Marquês and SCSBRS Tio Taka are susceptible to a high incidence (> 40%) of the fungus M. allbescens.

RESUMO: A prohexadiona-cálcio (ProCa) é um inibidor da biossíntese de giberelina e o objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o efeito do ProCa na epidemiologia do míldio da videira (MV) e da podridão de Botrytis (PB) e no desempenho vitícola da cultivar de videira Merlot. Experimentos foram realizados em um vinhedo comercial no município de São Joaquim/SC, Sul do Brasil, durante as safras 2017-2018 e 2018-2019. A ProCa foi aplicada em quatro doses e três estágios fenológicos: A) 0 g ha-1 (controle); B) 1000 g ha-1 (inflorescência totalmente desenvolvida); C) 500 + 500 g ha-1 (inflorescência totalmente desenvolvida e floração completa); D) 500 + 500 + 500 g ha-1 (inflorescência totalmente desenvolvida, floração completa e baga tipo ervilha). A incidência e severidade de MV e PB foram quantificadas semanalmente a partir do aparecimento dos primeiros sintomas até a colheita e a epidemiologia das doenças foram comparadas de acordo com: a) o início do aparecimento dos sintomas; b) tempo para atingir a máxima incidência e severidade da doença; c) valor máximo da incidência e severidade da doença; d) área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença. Em geral, houve diferenças significativas na dose de ProCa para todos os parâmetros epidemiológicos de MV e PB em comparação com o controle; no entanto, não houve diferença significativa entre as doses de ProCa. As principais variáveis epidemiológicas que diferenciaram o efeito da ProCa no controle do MV e PB foram o Smax e o AUSDPC. Algumas variáveis vitícolas da cultivar Merlot foram afetados negativamente por diferentes doses de ProCa, mas ainda foi uma boa opção o uso da ProCa para o controle do MV e PB em região de altitude do sul do Brasil durante as safras 2017-2018 e 2018-2019.

ABSTRACT: Prohexadione-calcium (ProCa) is a gibberellin biosynthesis inhibitor and the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of ProCa on the downy mildew (DM) and Botrytis bunch rot (BBR) epidemiology, and the yield and technological and phenolic parameters of grape Merlot cultivar. Experiments were carried out in a commercial vineyard in São Joaquim Municipality/SC, Southern Brazil, during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 growing seasons. ProCa was applied at four doses and three phenological stages: A) 0 g ha−1 (control); B) 1000 g ha−1 (inflorescence fully developed); C) 500 + 500 g ha−1 (inflorescence fully developeted and full flowering); D) 500 + 500 + 500 g ha−1 (inflorescence fully developed, full flowering, and berries pea-sized). DM and BBR incidence and severity were quantified weekly from the first symptom appearance until harvest, and their epidemiology was compared according to: a) the beginning of symptom appearance; b) the time to reach the maximum disease incidence and severity; c) the maximum value of disease incidence and severity; d) the area under the disease progress curve. In general, there were significant differences in the ProCa doses for all epidemiologic parameters of DM and BBR compared with the control plot; however, there was no significant difference among the ProCa doses. The principal epidemiological variables that differentiated the effect of ProCa on the DM and BBR control were the Smax and AUSDPC. Some yield and technological and phenolic parameters were negatively affected by different doses of ProCa, but it was still a good option for DM and BBR control in highland region of southern Brazil during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 growing seasons.

RESUMO Macrophomina phaseolina é um patógeno de solo com uma grande variedade de hospedeiros e de difícil controle por práticas culturais. O objetivo deste estudo foi quantificar a severidade da podridão das raízes (SPR) causada por M. phaseolina em cultivares de feijoeiro comum e seu impacto nos componentes de produção. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em casa de vegetação com as cultivares de feijão comum ANFC-9 Agro Norte, BRS Esteio, BRS Estilo, BRS Pérola, FTS Soberano, IPR Campos Gerais, IPR Tangará, IPR Tuiuiú, IPR Uirapurú e TAA Dama. Três isolados de M. phaseolina obtidos de plantas infectadas de feijão, soja e milho foram inoculados nas cultivares de feijão. No estádio fenológico R9 da maturidade da colheita de grãos foram avaliados o SPR e os componentes de produção de massa seca de raízes (MSR), número de legumes por planta (NLP), número de grãos por planta (NGP) e massa de grãos por planta (MGP). Todas as cultivares de feijão foram suscetíveis a M. phaseolina, apresentando redução no NLP, NGP e MGP. A SPR foi superior a 75%, independentemente da origem dos isolados. Na média das cultivares houve decréscimo significativo de 54,3% na MSR quando comparadas aos tratamentos controle. As cultivares IPR Tangará, ANFC-9 Agro Norte, BRS Esteio, BRS Pérola e ‘FTS Soberano’ obtiveram redução em pelo menos um dos componentes da produção enquanto a cultivar IPR Tangará em todos. Observouse decréscimo médio de NLP, NGP e MGP de 7,9%, 7,6% e 7,2%; 13,4%, 12,8% e 6,7%; e 14,2%, 12,9% e 10,1%, considerando os isolados obtidos de feijão, soja e milho, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT Macrophomina phaseolina is a soilborne pathogen with a wide range of hosts and its control through agricultural practices is difficult. The aim of this study was to quantify the severity of root rot (SRR) caused by M. phaseolina in common bean cultivars and its impact on yield components. The experiments were carried out under greenhouse conditions with the common bean cultivars ‘ANFC-9 Agro Norte’, ‘BRS Esteio’, ‘BRS Estilo’, ‘BRS Pérola’, ‘FTS Soberano’, ‘IPR Campos Gerais’, ‘IPR Tangará’, ‘IPR Tuiuiú’, ‘IPR Uirapurú’ and ‘TAA Dama’. Three isolates of M. phaseolina obtained from infected plants of common bean, soybeans and maize were inoculated in the common bean cultivars. In the phenological stage R9 of grain harvest maturity, the SRR and the yield components of root dry mass (RDM), number of pods per plant (NPP), number of grains per plant (NGP) and grain mass per plant (GMP) were assessed. All common bean cultivars were susceptible to M. phaseolina, showing a reduction in NPP, NGP and GMP. SPR was greater than 75%, regardless of the origin of isolates. Considering the average of cultivars, there was a significant decrease of 54.3% in RDM, compared to control treatments. The cultivars ‘IPR Tangará’, ‘ANFC-9 Agro Norte’, ‘BRS Esteio’, ‘BRS Pérola’ and ‘FTS Soberano’ had a decrease in at least one yield component, while a reduction occurred in all components for cultivar ‘IPR Tangará’. There was an average decrease in NPP, NGP and GMP of 7.9%, 7.6% and 7.2%; 13.4%, 12.8% and 6.7%; and 14.2%, 12.9% and 10.1%, considering the isolates obtained from beans, soybeans and maize, respectively.

RESUMO Alguns fungos fitogênicos sobrevivem nas sementes de cevada, no entanto, o seu período de sobrevivência é desconhecido em condições de armazenamento de sementes cevada no Brasil. O objetivo do trabalho foi quantificar a viabilidade dos fungos Alternaria alternata, Bipolaris sorokiniana e Drechslera teres em sementes de cevada, armazenadas por 315 dias durante o período da entressafra na Região Sul do Brasil. Quatrocentas sementes de cada cultivar foram desinfestadas e submetidas ao teste de sanidade de sementes em meio de cultura batata-dextrose-ágar (BDA), com intervalo de tempo entre avaliação de 35 dias, desde dezembro de 2011 a setembro de 2012. Os dados de incidência e viabilidade dos fungos em função do tempo de armazenamento foram submetidos à análise de regressão. Os três fungos foram detectados nas cinco cultivares em todas as épocas avaliadas, com redução significativa negativa da incidência e viabilidade com o aumento do período de armazenamento. A redução média mensal de viabilidade de A. alternata foi de 8% enquanto de B. sorokiniana e D. teres foi de 10%. No final do período de entressafra a viabilidade dos fungos A. alternata, B. sorokiniana e D. teres, na média das cultivares, manteve-se em 49,8%, 29,6% e 31,0%, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT Some seed-borne fungi can survive in barley seeds; nevertheless, their survival period is unknown in barley seeds under storage conditions in Brazil. The aim of this study was to quantify the viability of the fungi Alternaria alternata, Bipolaris sorokiniana and Drechslera teres in barley seeds stored for 315 days during the off-season in the south region of Brazil. Each cultivar had 400 seeds disinfested and subjected to seed health testing in potato-dextrose-agar (PDA) from December 2011 to September 2012 at 35-day intervals. Data on fungal incidence and viability as a function of the storage time underwent regression analysis. All three fungi were detected in the five cultivars in all evaluated periods, and their incidence and viability significantly reduced with increasing storage periods. Monthly average reduction in the viability of A. alternata was 8%, while that of B. sorokiniana and D. teres was 10%. At the end of the off-season, viability of A. alternata, B. sorokiniana and D. teres, considering the average of cultivars, remained 49.8, 29.6 and 31.0%, respectively.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar e quantificar fungos infectando sementes de arroz irrigado, produzidas nas safras 2015/16, 2016/17 e 2017/18, no sistema pré-germinado na região do Alto Vale do Itajaí, estado de Santa Catarina. Foram analisados 479 lotes de oito cultivares, sendo as sementes desinfestadas e semeadas em meio de cultura de batata-sacarose-ágar com incubação por sete dias a 25ºC ± 2 ºC e fotoperíodo de 12 horas. O principal fungo detectado nas três safras foi Microdochium albescens com 54,9% de incidência média, seguido de Alternaria padwikii (7,7%) e Bipolaris oryzae (3,3%).

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to identify and quantify fungi infecting irrigated rice seeds produced in the 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18 harvests in the pre-germinated system in the Alto Vale do Itajaí Region, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. A total of 479 lots of eight cultivars were analyzed. Seeds were disinfected and sown in potato-sucrose-agar culture medium with incubation for seven days at 25ºC ± 2ºC and photoperiod of 12 hours. The main fungus detected in the three crops season was Microdochium albescens with 54.9% of average incidence, followed by Alternaria padwikii (7.7%) and Bipolaris oryzae (3.3%).

Abstract There has been an increase in the occurrence of fungal diseases in Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hill. (yerba mate) resulting from their domestication. Seed health tests may indicate pathogens prior to sowing, enabling their control. Our study sought to compare the efficacy of fungi detection methods on yerba mate seeds. Seeds from four lots were subjected to the following detection methods: BDA, V8 and filter paper; as well as the performance of asepsis with 1% sodium hypochlorite and 70% alcohol. The fungi found in the lots were: Penicillium spp., Cladosporium spp., Aureobasidium melanogenum, Aspergillus spp., Pestalotia spp., Nigrospora spp., Trichoderma spp., Fusarium graminearum, F. oxysporum and F. guttiforme. The asepsis in the seeds reduced the occurrence of contaminating organisms. There were differences between the evaluated lots regarding fungal incidence. In general, the BDA and V8 culture media showed better results in fungal detection.

ABSTRACT Stalk rots compromise the translocation of water and nutrients, affecting grain filling. This study aimed to quantify the incidence of stalk rots in corn hybrids depending on sowing time and nitrogen topdressing rate, and to assess any correlation with grain yield. The experiment was conducted under field conditions in Atalanta, Santa Catarina state, Brazil, using a split-split-plot randomized block design. The hybrids AG 9025 PRO3 (super-early) and 30F53 VYH (early) were sown in the preferential (September 20) and late (December 5) sowing seasons with four nitrogen rates (0, 150, 300, and 450 kg·ha–1). The population density was 75,000 plants·ha–1 andthe nitrogen topdressing was carried out at the V4, V8, and V12 stages. The fungus Colletotrichum graminicola predominated in both hybrids and its presence was negatively correlated with stalk diameter and yield. The hybrid AG9025 PRO3 was more susceptible to stalk rot (35.1%) than the hybrid 30F53 VYH (8.8%). A higher incidence of stalk rot was observed in the late sowing season (31.1%) than in the preferential sowing season (11.2%). A decrease in the incidence of stalk rot was observed in the hybrid AG9025 PRO3 as nitrogen rates increased, but this behavior was not clearly observed in the hybrid 30F53 VYH.

RESUMO Plantio direto e alta população de plantas são práticas usuais em lavouras de soja na região sul do Brasil o que tem favorecido o incremento de doenças da haste e da vagem. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de populações de plantas na incidência de seca da haste. Os experimentos foram conduzidos no município de Muitos Capões, estado do Rio Grande do Sul, nas safras agrícolas de 2006/07 e 2007/08 com as cultivares BRS 255 RR e CD 213 RR. Foram avaliadas as populações de 12, 18, 24, 30 e 36 plantas m-2, com espaçamento entre linhas de 0,45 m. As unidades experimentais constaram parcelas de cinco metros de largura e dez metros de comprimento, arranjadas em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. A incidência da doença foi quantificada nos estádios fenológicos R5.1, R5.5, R6 e R7, sendo os dados obtidos submetidos à análise de regressão. O aumento na população de plantas de soja provocou incremento positivo e significativo na incidência de seca da haste nos quatro estádios fenológicos, em ambas cultivares e safras. Não foi detectada diferença significativa no rendimento de grãos de soja em função do aumento na população de plantas. Os resultados mostram que o manejo da soja evitando elevada população de plantas contribui para reduzir a incidência de seca da haste.

ABSTRACT No-till system and high plant density are common practices in soybean crops of the Brazilian southern region, which has increased the incidence of stem and pod diseases. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of plant populations on stem blight incidence. The experiments were conducted in Muitos Capões Municipality, Rio Grande do Sul State, during the seasons 2006/07 and 2007/08, using cultivars BRS 255 RR and CD 213 RR. The evaluated populations had 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 plants m-2, spaced 0.45 m between rows. The experimental plot units consisted of 5m width and 10m length, arranged in randomized blocks with four replicates. Stem blight incidence was quantified at phenological stages R5.1, R5.5, R6 and R7 and the collected data underwent regression analysis. Higher soybean plant densities caused a positive and significant increase on stem blight incidence in all four phenological stages for both cultivars and seasons. There was no significant difference for soybean grain yield according to the increase in plant population. Results indicated that soybean management preventing high plant densities can contribute to reduce stem blight incidence.

RESUMO A podridão da espiga de giberela (PEG) do milho causada pelo complexo de espécies de Fusarium graminearum é uma doença destrutiva no sul do Brasil e no mundo. Cinco experimentos de campo foram conduzidos para determinar a eficácia de fungicidas, produtividade e qualidade de grãos (estudo I) e resposta do aumento de doses (estudo II) no controle de PEG, rendimento de grãos (RG) e grãos avariados (GA) em milho durante as safras 2014/15 e 2015/16. Os fungicidas foram pulverizados 48 horas antes (ação preventiva) ou 48 horas após (ação curativa) a inoculação de dois isolados de Fusarium meridionale (PR e MG). O estudo I consistiu na aplicação de nove ingredientes ativos (metconazol, piraclostrobina, tebuconazol, trifloxistrobina, protioconazol, tiofanato-metílico, azoxistrobina, ciproconazol e carbendazim) em oito formulações comerciais em duas épocas de semeadura do milho. O estudo II consistiu em uma aplicação de três fungicidas em doses crescentes e avaliadas em três datas de semeadura com apenas o isolado PR. No estudo I, não foram observadas diferenças entre fungicidas quando as variáveis PEG, RG e GA foram analisadas em conjunto. Houve interações entre o tempo de aplicação dos fungicidas e os isolados de F. meridionale quando a severidade de PEG e RG foram consideradas. A aplicação preventiva dos fungicidas em diferentes datas de semeadura e o uso do isolado de MG reduziu a PEG em 11,6% e aumentou o RG em 5,3% em comparação a aplicação curativa. No estudo II, houve interação significativa entre fungicidas e tempo de aplicação para GER, RG e GA. A aplicação preventiva de trifloxistrobina + protioconazol (0,15 + 0,17 e 0,22 + 0,26 L ha-1), piraclostrobina + metconazol (0,19 + 0,12 e 0,29 + 0,18 L ha-1) e carbendazim (2 L ha-1) reduziram GER em 41 e 50%; 47 e 54%; 54% nas três datas de semeadura, respectivamente. Houve aumento no RG de 45,7% e 46,8% quando trifloxistrobina + protioconazol (0,15 + 0,17 e 0,22 + 0,26 L ha-1), respectivamente, foi pulverizado preventivamente nas três épocas de semeadura em comparação ao tratamento controle. Trifloxistrobina + protiocanazole, piraclostrobina + metconazole e carbendazim (1,0 e 2,0 L ha-1) pulverizados nas duas doses preventivamente reduziram a incidência de GA em 53,5 e 48,7%; 47,7 e 57,5%; 48,1 e 50,5%, respectivamente, para cada fungicida e dose, e podem ser incorporados em um programa de manejo de doenças.

ABSTRACT Gibberella ear rot (GER) in maize, caused by Fusarium graminearum species complex, is a destructive disease in southern Brazil and worldwide. Five field-experiments were conducted to determine fungicide efficacy, grain yield and grain quality (study I), as well as response of increasing rates (study II) on GER control, grain yield (GY) and grain damage (GD) in maize during the 2014/15 and 2015/16 growing seasons. Fungicides were sprayed 48 h before (preventive action) or 48 h after (curative action) inoculation of two Fusarium meridionale isolates (PR and MG). Study I consisted in applying nine active ingredients (metconazole, pyraclostrobin, tebuconazole, trifloxystrobin, prothioconazole, thiophanate-methyl, azoxystrobin, cyproconazole and carbendazim) present in eight commercial formulations at two sowing dates. Study II consisted in applying increasing rates of three fungicides evaluated at three sowing dates using only PR isolate. In study I, no differences were observed among fungicides when the variables GER, GY and GD were analyzed together. There were interactions between time of fungicide application and F. meridionale isolates when GER severity and GY were considered. Preventive fungicide application at different sowing dates and the use of MG isolate reduced GER by 11.6% and increased GY by 5.3%, compared to curative application. In study II, there was a significant interaction between fungicides and application time for GER, GY and GD. Preventive application of trifloxystrobin + prothioconazole (0.15 + 0.17 and 0.22 + 0.26 L ha-1), pyraclostrobin + metconazole (0.19 + 0.12 and 0.29 + 0.18 L ha-1) and carbendazim (2 L ha-1) reduced GER by 41 and 50%, 47 and 54%, and 54% at the three sowing dates, respectively. There was an increment of 45.7% and 46.8% in GY when trifloxystrobin + prothioconazole (0.15 + 0.17 and 0.22 + 0.26 L ha-1), respectively, were preventively sprayed at the three sowing dates, compared to the control treatment. Trifloxystrobin + prothiocanazole, pyraclostrobin + metconazole and carbendazim (1.0 and 2.0 L ha-1) preventively sprayed at two rates reduced GD incidence by 53.5 and 48.7%, 47.7 and 57.5%, 48.1 and 50.5%, respectively, for each fungicide and rate, and could be incorporated into a disease management program.
