RESUMO Na região da Serra da Mantiqueira os estudos pedogenéticos podem contribuir tanto para o entendimento de eventos pretéritos como para auxiliar na conservação dos recursos naturais. Este estudo objetivou caracterizar solos de região altomontana de Minas Gerais para avaliar a influência das condições paleoambientais na pedogênese. Cinco perfis foram selecionados e caracterizados quanto aos atributos morfológicos, físicos e químicos. Análises isotópicas de 13C foram realizadas em amostras de solo coletadas nas profundidades de 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80 e 100 cm; exceto em P2, que foi coletado até 60 cm de profundidade. A distribuição errática das frações granulométricas e de C evidenciam a natureza sedimentar dos solos, resultado da ação erosiva condicionada pelo relevo. Nos perfis P2, P4 e P5 (Cambissolos/Cambisols) a coloração brunada indica o processo de xantização, enquanto no perfil P1 (Argissolo/Lixisol) é evidenciado o processo de eluviação e iluviação, resultando no incremento de argila em profundidade e pela presença de cerosidade. Em P3 (Latossolo/Ferralsol) os pequenos valores de soma de bases, remoção de sílica e valores da razão SiO2/Al2O3 (índice ki) inferiores a 1,0 evidenciam o intemperismo avançado e o processo de alitização. Nos perfis verifica-se elevados teores de C orgânico em profundidade e acúmulo superficial, o que sugere a ocorrência do processo de melanização. A variação na assinatura isotópica do δ 13C indica uma condição pretérita mais seca, com vegetação mista, com mudança gradual de vegetação com via fotossintética predominante C3. Em P1 e P4, a diminuição dos teores de δ 13C em superfície é resultado da ação antrópica.

ABSTRACT In the Serra da Mantiqueira region the pedogenetic studies contribute to both the understanding of past events and supporting the conservation of natural resources. This study aimed to characterize the soils from the Minas Gerais high-mountains region to evaluate the influence of paleoenvironmental conditions on pedogenesis. Five profiles were selected and characterized for morphological, physical and chemical properties. Isotopic analyses of 13C were performed in soil samples collected at depths of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80 and 100 cm; except in P2, which was collected up to 60 cm deep. Erratic distribution of the particle-size fractions and C contents highlight the sedimentary nature of the profiles, resulting from the erosive action favored by the relief. High organic C content in subsurface and its accumulation in the surface were observed in the profiles, which suggests the occurrence of the melanization process. In the profiles P2, P4 and P5 (Cambissolos/ Cambisols) the brownish color indicates the xanthization process, while in P1 (Argissolo/ Lixisol), is highlighted the process of eluviation and illuviation resulting in the increase of clay in subsurface and presence of clay films. In P3 (Latossolo/ Ferralsol), the low values of sum of bases, silica removal and SiO2/Al2O3 ratio (ki index) values below 1.0 point to the advanced weathering and the allitization process. The variation in the isotopic signature of δ13C indicates a drier past condition, with mixed vegetation, with gradual change of vegetation with predominant C3 photosynthetic pathway. In P1 and P4, the decrease in the contents of δ13C in surface results from anthropic action.

Abstract Pockmarks are circular or elliptical structures formed at the seabed by the expulsion of gas from the subsurface. They are widely distributed along the continental margin off southeastern Brazil and can be over a kilometer wide and 100 meters deep. However, studies concerning the organic characteristics of these pockmark areas are scarce. This study sought to evaluate the organic composition of the sedimentary matter in pockmark areas located in the continental slope region of the southern Brazilian coast. Hydrocarbons, sterols, long-chain alcohols, stable isotopes of C and N, total organic carbon, and total nitrogen were assessed to provide an organic molecular characterization of the pockmarks located in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. These compounds did not reflect the organic characteristics of the scape of fluids that generate pockmark structures.

SUMMARY: Mesenchymal stem cells are characterized by in vitro high proliferation and multilineage potential maintenance. This study aimed to isolate and characterize equine YS mesenchymal stem cells and compare these with amniotic membranes. The yolk sac (YS) and amniotic membranes (AM) were obtained from 20 pregnant mares with gestational age around 30 days. Cells were cultured in α-MEM supplemented with 15 % FBS, 1 % antibiotic solution, 1 % L-glutamine and 1 % nonessential amino acids. To cell characterization we used cytogenetic analysis, fibroblast colony-forming unit assays, cell growth curves, immunophenotyping, flow cytometry, differentiation assays and teratoma formation. Results: Both cell sources presented fibroblastoid and epithelioid-like format. The YS cells have lower colony formation potential then AM ones, 3 versus 8 colonies per 103 plated cells. However, YS cells grew progressively while AM cells showed steady. Both, the YS and amnion cells immunolabeled for Oct-4, Nanog, SSEA-3, cytokeratin 18, PCNA, and vimentin. In addition, presented mesenchymal, hematopoietic, endothelial and pluripotency markers in flow cytometry. Discussion: Both cell sources presented high plasticity and differed into osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic lineages, and no tumor formation in nude mice was observed. The results suggest that horse YS may be useful for cell therapy such as amnion-derived cells.

RESUMEN: Las células madre mesenquimales se caracterizan por una alta proliferación in vitro y un mantenimiento potencial de múltiples líneas. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo aislar y caracterizar las células madre mesenquimales del saco vitelino equinas y compararlas con las membranas amnióticas. Se obtuvo el saco vitelino (SV) y las membranas amnióticas (MA) de 20 yeguas preñadas con edad gestacional de aproximadamente 30 días. Las células se cultivaron en α -MEM suplementado con 15 % de FBS, 1 % de solución antibiótica, 1 % de L-glutamina y 1 % de aminoácidos no esenciales. Para la caracterización celular utilizamos análisis citogenéticos, ensayos de unidades de colonias de fibroblastos, curvas de crecimiento celular, inmunofenotipaje, citometría de flujo, ensayos de diferenciación y formación de teratomas. Ambas fuentes celulares presentaron formato fibroblastoideo y epitelioide. Las células SV tienen un potencial de formación de colonias más bajo que las de MA, 3 versus 8 colonias por 103 células en placa. Sin embargo, las células SV crecieron progresivamente mientras que las células MA se mostraron estables. Tanto las células YS como las células amnios están inmunomarcadas para Oct-4, Nanog, SSEA-3, citoqueratina 18, PCNA y vimentina. Además, presentó marcadores mesenquimales, hematopoyéticos, endoteliales y pluripotenciales en citometría de flujo. Ambas fuentes celulares presentaron alta plasticidad y diferían en linajes osteogénicos, adipogénicos y condrogénicos, y no se observó formación de tumores en ratones. Los resultados sugieren que el SV de caballo puede ser útil para la terapia celular, como las células derivadas de amnios.

SUMMARY: The vomeronasal organ (VNO) is an accessory organ involved on the olfactory pathway, that detects pheromones and emits signals in order to modulate social and reproductive behavior. The VNO stem cells replace neurons throughout life. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize cells derived from the vomeronasal organ from New Zealand rabbits. Five male rabbits with 120 days were used for cell isolation and culture. Results: VNO-derived cells presented labelling for proliferation (PCNA), undifferentiated profile (Nanog), neuronal (GFAP), mesenchymal stem cells (CD73, CD90 and CD105 and Stro-1). Also, presence of cytoskeletal (Vimentin, b-tubulin and CK-18) and absence of hematopoietic markers (CD34, CD117 and CD45) both by immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. By PCR it was possible to verify the expression of some undifferentiated profile (Oct-4), neuronal (Nestin) and mesenchymal (CD73, CD105 and Vimentin) genes. Functionally, VNO-derived cells differentiate in vitro into adipocytes, osteocytes and chondrocytes, and presented no tumorigenic potential when injected to Balb/c nu/nu mice. In conclusion, the rabbit VNO-derived cells have a profile that could be supportive to VNO olfactory/neuroreceptor epithelium by delivering factors to epithelial turnover or even by differentiation into epithelial cells to replacement of commissural epithelium.

RESUMEN: El órgano vomeronasal (OVN) es un órgano accesorio de la vía olfatoria, que detecta feromonas y emite señales que afectan la modulación del comportamiento social y reproductivo. Las células madre OVN reemplazan las neuronas durante toda la vida. El objetivo de este estudio fue aislar y caracterizar células derivadas del órgano vomeronasal de conejos raza Nueva Zelanda. Para el aislamiento y el cultivo celular se utilizaron cinco conejos machos con una edad de 120 días. Las células del OVN presentaron etiquetado para la proliferación (PCNA), un perfil indiferenciado (Nanog), neuronal (GFAP), células madre mesenquimales (CD73, CD90 y CD105 y Stro-1). Además, se ob- servó presencia de citoesqueleto (Vimentina, β-tubulina y CK-18) y ausencia de marcadores hematopoyéticos (CD34, CD117 y CD45) tanto por inmunofluorescencia como por citometría de flujo. Me- diante PCR fue posible verificar la expresión de algunos genes de perfil indiferenciado (Oct-4), neuronal (Nestin) y mesenquimatoso (CD73, CD105 y Vimentin). Las células derivadas del OVN se diferencian in vitro en adipocitos, osteocitos y condrocitos, y no presentan un potencial tumorigénico al ser infiltrados en ratones Balb / c nu / nu. En conclusión, las células derivadas de OVN de conejo tienen un perfil que podría ser compatible con el epitelio olfatorio / neurorreceptor de OVN transmitiendo factores al recambio epitelial o incluso mediante la diferenciación en células epiteliales para reemplazar el epitelio comisural.

SUMMARY: This study aimed to investigate the morphometric and the pattern of protein and gene expression related to the extrinsic apoptotic pathway in experimental focal cerebral ischemia and the hole of neuroprotection with hypothermia and ketoprofen. For this analysis, 120 rats were randomly divided into 3 groups (20 animals each): control - no surgery (20 animals); sham - simulation of surgery (20 animals); ischemic - focal ischemia for 1 hour, without reperfusion (80 animals) and divided into four subgroups with 20 animals each: ischemic + intraischemic hypothermia; ischemic + previous intravenous ketoprofen, and ischemic + hypothermia and ketoprofen. The infarct volume was measured using morphometric analysis of infarct areas defined by triphenyl tetrazolium chloride and the patterns of expression of the apoptosis genes (Fas, c-Flip, caspase-8 and caspase-3) and the apoptosis protein caspase-3 were evaluated by quantitative real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry, respectively. Hypo expression of genes of extrinsic pathway of apoptosis was observed: Fas receptor, c-Flip and caspase-8 in the ischemics areas. Increases in the gene and protein caspase-3 in the ischemic areas were also observed, and these increases were reduced by hypothermia and ketoprofen, also noted in the morphometric study. The caspases-3 increase suggests that this gene plays an important role in apoptosis, probably culminating in cell death and that the neuroprotective effect of hypothermia and ketoprofen is involved.

RESUMEN: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar la morfometría y el patrón de expresión de proteínas y genes relacionados con la vía apoptótica extrínseca en la isquemia cerebral focal experimental y el agujero de neuroprotección con hipotermia y ketoprofeno. Se dividieron aleatoriamente 120 ratas en 3 grupos (20 animales cada uno): control - sin cirugía (20 animales); simulación - simulación de cirugía (20 animales); isquemia isquemia focal durante 1 hora, sin reperfusión (80 animales) y dividida en cuatro subgrupos con 20 animales cada uno: isquemia + hipotermia intraisquémica; isquemia + ketoprofeno intravenoso previo, e isquemia + hipotermia y ketoprofeno. El volumen del infarto se midió utilizando un análisis morfométrico de áreas de infarto definidas por cloruro de trifenil tetrazolio y los patrones de expresión de los genes de apoptosis (Fas, c-Flip, caspase-8 y caspase-3) y la proteína de apoptosis caspase-3 fueron evaluados por PCR cuantitativa en tiempo real e inmunohistoquímica, respectivamente. Se observó hipoexpresión de genes de la vía extrínseca de la apoptosis: receptor Fas, c-Flip y caspasa-8 en las áreas isquémicas. También se observaron aumentos en el gen y la proteína caspasa-3 en las áreas isquémicas y estos aumentos se redujeron por hipotermia y ketoprofeno, también observado por estudio morfométrico. El aumento de caspasas-3 sugiere que este gen tiene un papel importante en la apoptosis, y probable causa de muerte celular, involucrando el efecto neuroprotector de la hipotermia y el ketoprofeno.

Resumo Introdução A resistência de união de um pino de fibra pode ser afetada por vários fatores, como o cimento endodôntico e o tempo de espera pós-endodontia. Objetivo Avaliar o efeito de diferentes cimentos endodônticos e dois tempos de espera pós-endodontia na resistência de união de pinos de fibra. Material e método Setenta e dois dentes bovinos foram tratados endodonticamente e obturados usando três cimentos endodônticos: à base de eugenol, à base de resina epóxia ou à base de mineral trióxido agregado. Os espécimes foram armazenados a 37 ° C por 24 horas ou por 30 meses. Após, os canais radiculares foram preparados para cimentação dos pinos de fibra usando o RelyX U200. Foram realizados testes de push-out e análise de falhas. Os dados foram analisados por análise de variância bidirecional e com o teste t. Resultado O cimento AH Plus obteve os maiores valores de resistência de união aos 30 meses pós-endodontia (11,26 Mpa) (p <0,05), no entanto, não houve diferença com o cimento Endofill no mesmo tempo. Os cimentos Endofill e MTA Fillapex não diferiram significativamente em seus efeitos, independentemente do tempo de espera pós-endodontia. Conclusão O cimento endodôntico utilizado e o tempo de espera pós-endodontia afetam a resistência adesiva dos pinos de fibra. A adesão aumenta significativamente quando o pino de fibra é cimentado 30 meses após a obturação do canal radicular, enquanto a adesão é reduzida ao cimentar imediatamente após o tratamento do canal radicular, principalmente para cimentos endodônticos à base de eugenol.

Abstract Introduction The resistance adhesive of a fiber post can be affected by several factors, such as the endodontic sealer and post-endodontic waiting time. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different endodontic sealers and two different post-endodontic waiting times on the bond strength of fiber posts. Material and method Seventy-two bovine teeth were endodontically treated and filled using three endodontic sealers: eugenol-based, epoxy resin-based, or mineral trioxide aggregate-based. The specimens were stored at 37°C for 24 hours or for 30 months. After the respective storage times, the root canals were prepared for luting fiber posts using RelyX U200. Push-out tests and analysis of failures were performed. The push-out data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance to compare the effects of the endodontic sealer and with the t-test to compare the effects of post-endodontic waiting time. Result The AH Plus sealer yielded the highest bond strength values at 30 months post-endodontics (11.26 Mpa) (p < 0.05), however no had difference with Endofill sealer at the same time. Endofill and MTA Fillapex sealers did not differ significantly in their effects, irrespective of the post-endodontic waiting time. Conclusion In conclusion, the endodontic sealer used and post-endodontic waiting time affect the adhesive resistance of fiber posts. The adhesion increases significantly when the fiber post is cemented 30 months after the root canal filling, while the adhesion is reduced when cementing immediately after root canal treatment, in particular for eugenol-based endodontic sealers.

RESUMO O estádio de abertura floral na colheita e o uso de técnicas pós-colheita, como o revestimento das inflorescências com cera de carnaúba, podem influenciar na manutenção da qualidade para comercialização. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar o conteúdo de carboidratos em inflorescências de bastão-do-imperador colhidas em dois diferentes estádios de abertura e tratadas com diferentes concentrações da cera de carnaúba. As inflorescências foram colhidas com brácteas semiabertas (brácteas basais iniciando seu processo de expansão) e abertas (brácteas basais totalmente expandidas e abertura das brácteas menores do interior da inflorescência) e receberam a aplicação de cera de carnaúba nas concentrações 0,75%; 1,5% ou 3,0%, além de um tratamento controle, sem aplicação da cera. Após o tratamento, as hastes florais foram mantidas a 16 e 21 ° C por 20 dias. Ao longo do período de armazenamento realizaram-se cinco amostragens de brácteas (brácteas externas e internas separadamente – em inflorescências abertas; brácteas externas e internas em conjunto – em inflorescências semiabertas), a cada três dias para avaliação dos teores de açúcares solúveis totais e amido. Os teores de açúcares solúveis totais e amido diferiram entre os diferentes tipos de brácteas coletadas e ao longo do período de armazenamento avaliado, podendo indicar uma remobilização de reservas. A concentração de 3,0% de cera de carnaúba proporcionou um maior teor de açúcares solúveis totais, entretanto esse teor não interfere na longevidade do bastão-do-imperador nos dois estádios de abertura floral avaliados.

ABSTRACT Floral opening stage during harvest and use of postharvest techniques, such as inflorescence coating with carnauba wax, may influence quality maintenance for commercialization. The aim was to evaluate the carbohydrate content of torch ginger inflorescences harvested at two different opening stages and treated with different concentrations of carnauba wax. The inflorescences were harvested with semi-open (basal bracts beginning their expansion process) and open bracts (fully expanded basal bracts and opening of the smaller bracts on interior of the inflorescence) and received the application of carnauba wax at concentrations of 0.75%; 1.5% or 3.0%, in addition to a control treatment, without wax application. After the treatment, the floral stems were maintained at 16 and 21 °C for 20 days. During the storage period, five bracts samples (external and internal bracts separately - in open inflorescences, external and internal bracts together - in semi-open inflorescences) were carried out every three days for evaluation of total soluble sugars and starch content. Contents of total soluble sugars and starch differed between the different types of bracts collected and throughout the storage period evaluated, and could indicate a remobilization of reserves. The concentration of 3.0% carnauba wax induced higher total soluble sugar content. However, this content does not affect the longevity of torch ginger at the two evaluated floral opening stages.

SUMMARY: Recently, there has been increased interest in the use of natural jaws for better results in bone fixation studies. Thus, the sheep mandible has been chosen for such studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the length and resistance of the sheep mandible when submitted to a compression test with freedom in the three axes of space. Seventy fresh sheep (Ovis aries) mandibles were used in this study. Initially, the soft tissues were removed, and measurements of the mandible size were performed. Fifty mandibles were selected for mechanical testing based on the mean values from this assessment. The mandibles were joined by fixation in the symphyseal region and were tridimensionally deformed. A metallic support suitable for study of the mandible under efforts with freedom in the three axes in space was used. For this test, three displacement cycles were applied. Based on the mean stiffness, 35 mandibles were selected. The mean value of the sheep mandible mensuration was 13.6 cm ± 0.53 cm. The mean value of the sheep mandible stiffness was 153.5N ± 54.0 N. These data are useful for future studies on fixation systems for fractures and orthognathic surgery.

RESUMEN: Recientemente, ha aumentado el interés en el uso de mandíbulas naturales para obtener mejores resultados en estudios de fijación ósea. Por lo tanto, la mandíbula de las ovejas se ha elegido para tales estudios. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la longitud y la resistencia de la mandíbula de oveja al ser sometida a una prueba de compresión con libertad en los tres ejes del espacio. Se utilizaron 70 mandíbulas de oveja fresca (Ovis aries). Inicialmente, se extirparon los tejidos blandos y se realizaron mediciones del tamaño de la mandíbula. Cincuenta mandíbulas fueron seleccionadas para pruebas mecánicas basadas en los valores promedio de esta evaluación. Las mandíbulas se unieron por fijación en la región sinfisial y se deformaron tridimensionalmente. Se utilizó un soporte metálico adecuado para el estudio de la mandíbula bajo esfuerzos con libertad en los tres ejes en el espacio. Para esta prueba, se aplicaron tres ciclos de desplazamiento. En base a la rigidez media, se seleccionaron 35 mandíbulas. El valor medio de la medición de la mandíbula de oveja fue de 13,6 cm ± 0,53 cm. El valor medio de la rigidez de la mandíbula de oveja fue 153,5 N ± 54,0 N. Estos datos son útiles para futuros estudios sobre sistemas de fijación para fracturas y cirugía ortognática.

RESUMO A avaliação de híbridos pré-comerciais em um banco de germoplasma é essencial para determinar seu potencial comercial ou sua utilidade como potenciais genitores em um programa de melhoramento. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a divergência genética e o comportamento per se de 47 híbridos pré-comerciais pertencentes ao banco de germoplasma de quiabeiro da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia. Foi avaliado o índice de precocidade (%), o número de frutos (frutos por planta), o peso médio do fruto (g) e a produtividade (g por planta). A análise da divergência genética foi realizada por meio de técnicas multivariadas utilizando-se a distância generalizada de Mahalanobis e empregando-se diferentes métodos de agrupamento (UPGMA e Variáveis Canônicas). O desempenho dos híbridos foi comparado pelo teste de médias Scott-Knott (p= 0,05). Houve significativa variabilidade genética entre os híbridos de quiabeiro. Os métodos UPGMA e Variáveis Canônicas agruparam os híbridos de forma semelhante, sendo satisfatórios para representar a divergência genética. Dez híbridos obtiveram desempenho superior aos híbridos comerciais. Dentre eles, o híbrido pré-comercial UFU-QB16 se destacou como o mais promissor, podendo também ser utilizado, após autofecundação, na obtenção de genitores potenciais em programas de melhoramento genético.

ABSTRACT Evaluation of pre-commercial hybrids in a germplasm bank is essential for determining its commercial potential or its utility as a potential genitor in a breeding program. The objective of this study was to determine genetic divergence and per se behavior of 47 pre-commercial hybrids from okra germplasm bank of the Universidade Federal de Uberlândia. Precocity index (%), number of fruits (fruits per plant), average fruit mass (g) and productivity (g per plant) were evaluated. Analysis of genetic divergence was performed by multivariate analysis using Mahalanobis distance with different clustering methods (UPGMA and canonical analysis). The performance of hybrids was compared by Scott-Knott (p= 0.05). A significant genetic variability among okra hybrids was observed. UPGMA and canonical analysis grouped the hybrids similarly, being satisfactory to represent genetic divergence. Ten hybrids presented higher performance than the commercial hybrids. Among them, UFU-QB16 stood out as the most promising hybrid for being used as a potential parent in breeding programs after auto pollination.

Abstract Faced with the need for greater knowledge of the different physalis species, the aim of this study was to characterize different Native American physalis species (Physalis peruviana L., Physalis pubescens L., Physalis angulata L., Physalis mínimos L. and Physalis ixocarpa Brot) as to their physicochemical characteristics, bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity. Besides that, in order to increase their use and add even more value to this fruit, we also evaluate the influence of these different species on the physicochemical, rheological and sensory characteristics of physalis jelly. In addition, this study evaluated the sensory acceptance of the combination of physalis jellies obtained from different species with brie-type cheese. The Peruviana, Pubences and Angulata, are highlighted for being the nutritionally richest species, with the highest levels of phenolic compounds, vitamin C and antioxidant. Moreover, they stand out for originating the most widely sensory accepted jellies, either in pure form or in combination with brie-type cheese.

Abstract Purpose: To evaluated the effects of L-lysine on the intestinal and urothelial epithelia in cystoplasty in rats. Methods: Twenty-eight 9-week-old rats were assigned to 4 groups: Group A (n=8) cystoplasty followed by administration of L-lysine (150 mg/kg body weight by gavage) for 30 weeks; Group B (n=8) cystoplasty + water for 30 weeks; Group C (n=6) L-lysine for 30 weeks; Group D (n=6) water for 30 weeks. Results: On histopathology with hematoxylin and eosin, mild to moderate hyperplasia transitional was observed in at the site of anastomosis in all animals submitted to cystoplasty (Groups A and B), but "transitional metaplasia" of the intestinal glandular epithelium was more accentuated in Group A (p=0.045). No inflammatory cells, dysplasia or abnormalities were observed. Staining with Alcian blue revealed a substantial reduction of goblet cells and mucins in the colon segment (Groups A and B). Conclusion: The administration of L-lysine to rats accelerated the development of transitional metaplasia in the epithelium of the colon segment in cystoplasty.

RESUMO Introdução: As infecções causadas pelo vírus da hepatite B (VHB) e C (VHC) constituem grave problema de saúde pública. Objetivos: O estudo visou detectar os marcadores HBsAg, anti-HBc, anti-HBs e anti-VHC em profissionais de saúde e usuários do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) no município de Resende, Rio de Janeiro, bem como descrever o perfil sociodemográfico e os antecedentes de exposição. Métodos: Foram avaliadas 585 amostras entre maio e junho de 2014, obtidas dos dados do Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN). Elas foram testadas para HBsAg, anti-HBc, anti-HBs e anti-VHC. Resultados: A faixa etária predominante observada foi de 30-44 anos (n = 277; 47,3%); 54,87% (n = 321) eram do sexo feminino e 271 (46,32%) se autodeclararam de cor da pele/etnia branca. Os participantes casados foram 262 (44,78%); 42,22% tinham o ensino médio (n = 247) e 174 eram profissionais de saúde (29,74%). Quatro participantes eram anti-VHC reagentes e 18, reagentes para anti-HBc. Destes, 15 eram anti-HBs reagentes (aHBs+). Nos profissionais de saúde, 68,8% possuem aHbs+. Em relação à vacinação contra hepatite B, 63,9% declararam possuí-la. Conclusão: As prevalências 0,68% de VHC e de 3,08% de anti-HBc estão abaixo da detectada na região Sudeste no último censo nas capitais do Brasil. Há ainda reduzida adesão dos profissionais de saúde à testagem para VHB e VHC.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Infections caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are a major public health problem. Objectives: The study aimed to detect HBsAg, anti-HBc, anti-HBs and anti-HCV among health professionals and users of the Brazilian Unified Health System [Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS)] in the city of Resende, Rio de Janeiro, and to describe the sociodemographic profile and background of exposure. Methods: A total of 585 samples were collected between May and June 2014, obtained from the Brazilian Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System [Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN)] data, which were tested for HBsAg, anti-HBc, anti-HBs and anti-HCV. Results: The predominant age group observed was 30-44 years (n = 277; 47.3%), 54.87% (n = 321) were female and 271 (46.32%) self declared skin colour/ethnicity white. The married participants were 262 (44.78%), 42.22% graduated from high school (n = 247) and 174 were health professionals (29.74%). Four participants were anti-HCV reagents and 18 were anti-HBc reagents. From these, 15 participants were reactive for anti-HBs antibodies. Among health professionals, 68.8% were anti-HBs positive. And 63.9% of participants declared to be vaccinated against hepatitis B. Conclusion: The prevalence of 0.68% for HCV and 3.08% for anti-HBc are below that detected in the Southeast region from the last census in the capitals of Brazil. There is still a reduced acceptance among health professionals for HBV and HCV screening.

ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of L-lysine on the intestinal and urothelial epithelium of rats subjected to ureterosigmoidostomy (new model for surgical carcinogenesis). METHODS: Forty-two rats, 9 weeks of age, were divided into 6 groups. Animals in groups A, B, C were subjected to ureterosigmoidostomy (US) and treated with L-lysine, celecoxib and H2O, respectively. Groups D, E and F (non-operated controls) received L-lysine, celecoxib and H2O, respectively. The L-lysine dose was 150 mg/kg and that of celecoxib was 20 mg/kg. The colon was analyzed for the presence of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) under a stereomicroscope.The tissue was stained with hematoxylin and eosin and PAS alcian blue. RESULTS: There were rare ACF, and there was no statistically significant difference between the groups. Histopathologic study of the ureteral epithelium identified moderate to severe urothelial hyperplasia in rats with ureterosigmoidostomy. Transitional hyperplasia in the ureters of animals receiving L-lysine (A) showed an apparent difference compared to the control (C) (P=0.2424). There was no dysplasia or atypia CONCLUSION: L-lysine does not promote carcinogenesis of the intestinal and urethelial epithelium of rats subjected to ureterosigmoidostomy at the doses and times studied.

El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar el efecto del uso de diferentes dietas con alto contenido de grano sobre el comportamiento ingestivo de corderos en confinamiento. Se utilizaron 32 corderos machos castrados de la raza Texel destetados con aproximadamente 50 días de edad. Los tratamientos fueron cuatro dietas en base a diferentes granos de cereales no procesados: maíz, avena blanca, avena negra y arroz con cáscara. Los corderos alimentados en base a grano de maíz mostraron menos tiempo a las actividades de rumia y masticación, dedicando más tiempo al ocio. Además de eso, estos corderos presentaron mayor consumo de materia seca (0,885 kg/día), menor eficiencia de alimentación en términos de FDN y mejor eficiencia de rumia de la MS (226,05 g MS/h) y de la FDN (33,61 g FDN/h) frente a los corderos de los otros tres tratamientos. El comportamiento ingestivo de corderos en confi namiento con el uso de dietas con alto contenido de grano basado en maíz, avena blanca, avena negra y arroz con cáscara se somete a cambios causados principalmente por el consumo voluntario de alimento y la proporción de FDN presente en las dietas experimentales.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of using different high-grain diets on the feeding behavior of lambs finished in feedlot. 32 male castrated Texel breed and weaned at approximately 50 days of age lambs were used. The treatments were four diets based on different types of cereal grains, not processed, as follows: corn grain, white oat grain, black oat grain or grain of rice in the husk. Lambs fed diets with high corn grain spent less time ruminating and total chewing activity and remained longer time in idleness. Moreover, had higher dry matter intake, lower feeding efficiency in relation to NDF and better rumination efficiency of DM and NDF compared with lambs from the other three treatments. The feeding behavior of feedlot finished lambs with the use of high-grain diets based on corn, white oat, black oat or rice in the hulls suffer changes caused mainly by the voluntary feed intake and the proportion of NDF present in the experimental diets.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do uso de diferentes dietas de alto grão sobre o comportamento ingestivo de cordeiros terminados em confinamento. Foram utilizados 32 cordeiros machos, castrados, da raça Texel e desmamados com aproximadamente 50 dias de idade. Os tratamentos foram quatro dietas baseadas em diferentes tipos de grãos de cereais, não processados, sendo: grão de milho, grão de aveia branca, grão de aveia preta ou grão de arroz com casca. Os cordeiros alimentados com dietas de alto grão de milho despenderam menor tempo em atividades de ruminação e de mastigação total e permaneceram maior tempo em ócio. Além disso, apresentaram maior consumo de matéria seca, menor eficiência de alimentação em relação à FDN e uma melhor eficiência de ruminação da MS e da FDN quando comparados com cordeiros dos outros três tratamentos. O comportamento ingestivo de cordeiros terminados em confinamento com o uso de dietas de alto grão a base de milho, aveia branca, aveia preta ou arroz com casca sofre alterações provocadas principalmente pelo consumo voluntário de alimento e pela proporção de FDN presente nas dietas experimentais.

Plasmodium vivax is the most widespread parasite causing malaria, being especially prevalent in the Americas and Southeast Asia. Children are one of the most affected populations, especially in highly endemic areas. However, there are few studies evaluating the therapeutic response of infants with vivax malaria. This study retrospectively evaluated the parasitaemia clearance in children diagnosed with vivax malaria during the first five days of exclusive treatment with chloroquine (CQ). Infants aged less than six months old had a significantly slower parasitaemia clearance time compared to the group of infants and children between six months and 12 years old (Kaplan-Meier survival analysis; Wilcoxon test; p = 0.004). The impaired clearance of parasitaemia in younger children with vivax malaria is shown for the first time in Latin America. It is speculated that CQ pharmacokinetics in young children with vivax malaria is distinct, but this specific population may also allow the detection of CQ-resistant parasites during follow-up, due to the lack of previous immunity.
