RESUMO Este estudo descreve o caso de um cão que teve laceração peniana tratada por penectomia parcial seguida de coleta de sêmen para inseminação artificial bem sucedida. Um cão Jack Russel Terrier de 1,5 anos, com libido, órgãos genitais e sêmen normais, teve laceração peniana após cópula. O cão foi parcialmente penectomizado sem orquiectomia, preservando a possibilidade de coleta de sêmen. A coleta de sêmen foi bem sucedida 45 e 53 dias após a cirurgia, sendo utilizado para inseminação artificial de duas cadelas, uma delas se tornando gestante. Portanto, sêmen para inseminação artificial pode ser coletado em cães parcialmente penectomizados, esta técnica revelando ser uma potencial forma de preservação da fertilidade de cães com lesões penianas que necessitem penectomia.

ABSTRACT This study describes a case of a dog with a lacerated penile tear treated with partial penectomy followed by successful semen collections for artificial insemination. A 1.5-year-old Jack Russel Terrier with normal libido, genital organs and semen, had a penile laceration after copulation. The dog underwent a partial penectomy without orchiectomy, thus preserving the possibility of semen collection. Semen was successfully collected at 45 and 53 days after surgery, and it was used for artificial insemination of two bitches, one of which became pregnant. Therefore, this report demonstrated that semen may be collected from dogs with partial penectomy for artificial insemination, this technique has the potential to preserve fertility of dogs with penile lesions that require penectomy.

ABSTRACT Detection of virulent strains associated with aquatic environment is a current concern for the management and control of human and animal health. Thus, Vibrio diversity was investigated in four estuaries from state of Ceará (Pacoti, Choró, Pirangi and Jaguaribe) followed by antimicrobial susceptibility to different antimicrobials used in aquaculture and detection of main virulence factors to human health. Isolation and identification were performed on TCBS agar (selective medium) and dichotomous key based on biochemical characteristics, respectively. Nineteen strains of genus Vibrio were catalogued. Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Choró River) and V. alginolyticus (Pacoti River) were the most abundant species in the four estuaries. All strains were submitted to disk diffusion technique (15 antimicrobials were tested). Resistance was found to: penicillin (82%), ampicillin (54%), cephalotin (7%), aztreonan (1%), gentamicin, cefotaxime and ceftriaxone (0.5%). Five pathogenic strains were chosen to verification of virulence factors. Four estuaries showed a high abundance of species. High number of tested positive strains for virulence is concerning, since some of those strains are associated to human diseases, while others are known pathogens of aquatic organisms.

RESUMO O estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a influência da condição corporal (CC) ao parto no balanço energético (BE) e o desempenho reprodutivo de cabras Alpinas no pós-parto. Foram utilizadas 68 cabras distribuídas em três grupos (G), sendo: G1- cabras com baixa CC (CC entre 1,5 e 2,5); G2: cabras com moderada CC (entre 2,75 e 3,5) e G3: cabras com alta CC (entre 3,75 e 5,0). Os animais receberam dieta (silagem de milho e concentrado, com 18% de proteína bruta e 1,7Mcal/kg de matéria seca de energia líquida) ad libitum. As avaliações foram feitas nas oito primeiras semanas de lactação, para determinação do BE, do intervalo do parto à primeira ovulação e ao primeiro estro e da concentração plasmática de progesterona. Os dados foram analisados por análise de variância a 5% de probabilidade. Não houve efeito da CC ao parto sobre o BE dos animais. Todas as cabras apresentaram BE negativo ao parto, com mudança para BE positivo aos 51, 58 e 64 dias pós-parto, respectivamente. Não houve diferença na concentração plasmática de progesterona nos três grupos, sendo caracterizada função luteal (concentração ≥1ng/dL) em apenas 5,9% dos animais avaliados. O intervalo do parto à primeira ovulação foi de 46 dias. Apenas 4,4% das cabras exibiram estro. Cabras leiteiras de média produção, entre 2,5 e 3,0kg de leite/dia, entram em BE negativo ao parto, independentemente da CC apresentada, influenciando negativamente o reinício da atividade ovariana no pós-parto.

ABSTRACT The concentration of progesterone in the blood was used to study the effect of body condition score (BCS) on the post-partum ovarian activity of dairy goats. Sixty-eight female goats were distributed between three treatments. Treatment 1: goats with BCS between 1.00 and 2.75; Treatment 2: goats with BCS between 2.75 and 3.50; and Treatment 3: goats with BCS between 3.50 and 5.00. The goats had the blood collected immediately after birth, and from that time up to the eighth week post-partum at three day intervals. The progesterone analysis on the blood was used to determine the interval between the birth and the first ovulation. The females were teasing two times per day for estrus detection and determination of the time interval from birth to first estrus. No significant difference was found on the progesterone concentration between treatments. The luteal functionality was characterized in only 5.9% of goats, with a concentration higher than 1ng/mL. The period from birth to first ovulation was 46 days. The detectable estrus was found in only 4.4% of goats. The BCS at birth did not influence the recovery of ovarian activity of dairy goats.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of tamoxifen on the plasma concentration of NT-pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer and to correlate changes in NT-proBNP with the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Over a period of 12 months, we followed 60 women with a diagnosis of breast cancer. The patients were separated into a group that received only chemotherapy (n=23), a group that received chemotherapy + tamoxifen (n=21), and a group that received only tamoxifen (n=16). Plasma levels of NT-proBNP were assessed at 0 (T0), 6 (T6), and 12 (T12) months of treatment, and echocardiography data were assessed at T0 and T12. Plasma NT-proBNP levels were increased in the chemotherapy-only group at T6 and T12, whereas elevated NT-proBNP levels were only found at T6 in the chemotherapy + tamoxifen group. At T12, the chemotherapy + tamoxifen group exhibited a significant reduction in the peptide to levels similar to the group that received tamoxifen alone. The chemotherapy-only group exhibited a significant decrease in LVEF at T12, whereas the chemotherapy + tamoxifen and tamoxifen-only groups maintained levels similar to those at the beginning of treatment. Treatment with tamoxifen for 6 months after chemotherapy significantly reduced the plasma levels of NT-proBNP and did not change LVEF in women with breast cancer.

Estudou-se o efeito do Hormônio do Crescimento bovino (bGH) sobre os parâmetros seminais e a concentração sérica de testosterona de touros da raça Nelore. Dezesseis touros foram distribuídos em um delineamento fatorial 2 x 2 (duas idades e dois níveis de r-bST), com quatro animais em cada tratamento. As aplicações de r-bST foram realizadas a cada 14 dias, totalizando nove aplicações por animal, em um período experimental de 120 dias. As coletas de sêmen foram realizadas a cada 15 dias e, para determinar as concentrações de testosterona, foram realizadas coletas de sangue a cada quatro horas, num total de 24 horas, e a cada 30 dias a partir da primeira aplicação de r-bST. O sêmen dos touros adultos tratados com r-bST apresentaram maior motilidade e vigor (P<0,05) em relação aos animais controles (79,70±11,56% vs 64,06±23,65%) e (3,80±0,88 vs 2,92±1,25), respectivamente; entretanto, as demais características seminais não foram influenciadas (P>0,05) pelo tratamento com r-bST. Os aspectos físicos do sêmen dos touros jovens não foram afetados (P>0,05) pelo tratamento com r-bST. Entretanto o tratamento com r-bST diminuiu os defeitos morfológicos menores (delgado, gigante normal, pequeno normal, globoso, cabeça isolada normal, abaxial, cauda dobrada e enrolada levemente e gota distal) em relação aos jovens não tratados (P<0,05). As concentrações séricas de testosterona foram influenciadas (P<0,05) pelo tratamento, aos 120 dias após a primeira aplicação do r-bST, e apresentaram tendência de três picos no período de 24 horas.

The aim of this trial was to study the effect of Growth Hormone (GH) on the seminal parameters and testosterone profile from Nellore bulls. Sixteen bulls were allocated in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement (two ages and two r-bST levels), with four animals per treatment. The r-bST was injected every 14 days, with a total of nine injections per animal, during the 120 days of the experimental period. The semen collections were done every 15 days and blood samples were collected in four hour intervals for 24 hours, and in 30 day intervals from the first r-bST injection for testosterone profile. The semen of adult bulls treated with r-bST showed greater MOT and VIG (P<0.05) in relation to the control (79.70±11.56% vs 64.06±23.65%) and (3.80±0.88 vs 2.92±1.25) respectively; however, the other evaluated seminal parameters were not affected (P>0.05) by the r-bST treatment. The physical measurements of the semen of young animals was also unaffected (P>0.05) by r-bST injection. However, the treatment with r-bST decreased the number of minor morphologic defects (narrow head, giant head, small normal head, round head, free normal head, abaxial implantation, simple bent tail and distal droplet) compared to untreated young bulls (P<0.05). The serum testosterone concentration was influenced (P<0.05) by treatment, at 120 days after the first injection of r-bST and they showed a tendency of three picks in a 24 hour period of sampling

O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi analisar o efeito da radiação vermelha de baixa intensidade sobre alguns parâmetros cinéticos do espermatozoide canino criopreservado. Ejaculados de oito cães adultos foram centrifugados, rediluídos em meio tris-gema de ovo com 6% de glicerol, e, posteriormente, fracionados em: T1: incidência de radiação vermelha (660 NM) (Fisioled - Mmoptics - 100mW) por 60 segundos, antes do resfriamento e após a descongelação; T2: incidência somente antes do resfriamento; T3: incidência somente após a descongelação; e T4: sem incidência. Após a descongelação, as amostras foram submetidas ao TTR utilizando-se Sperm Class Analyzer(r). No TTR0, TTR60 e TTR90, não houve diferença entre as variáveis analisadas pelo CASA. Somente no TTR30 os efeitos da incidência da radiação vermelha foram evidentes e significativos em T1 e T2; T1 resultou em baixa MT (12,5 + 10,6%) e T2 determinou o melhor resultado de MT 40,3 + 26,1%. De forma similar T1 apresentou maior número de espermatozoides estáticos (77,5±28,9%) em relação ao T2 (50,6±28%). Concluiu-se que a dupla incidência de radiação vermelha de baixa intensidade antes do resfriamento e após a descongelação teve efeito deletério sobre a motilidade do espermatozoide canino, expressa principalmente aos 30 minutos após descongelação.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of low intensity red light on some kinetic parameters of cryopreserved canine sperm. Ejaculates from 08 adult dogs were centrifuged, diluted in Tris-egg yolk with 6% glycerol, and subsequently separated into: T1: incidence of red light (660 nm) (Fisioled -MMOptics - 100mW) for 60 seconds before the cooling and after thawing, T2: just before cooling, T3: only after thawing, and T4: no incidence. After thawing the samples were subjected to TTR using Sperm analyzer(r). In TTR0, TTR60 and TTR90 there were no differences between the variables analyzed by CASA. Only in TTR30 the effects of the incidence of red light were visible and significant in T1 and T2. T1 resulted in low MT (12.5 ±10.6%) and T2 determined the best result of MT 26.1%±40.3. Similarly T1 showed a higher number of static spermatozoa (77.5±28.9%) compared to T2 (50.6±28%). We concluded that the double incidence of low intensity red light, before cooling and after thawing, had a deleterious effect on canine sperm motility expressed at 30 minutes after thawing.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of silk flower (Calotropis procera SW) hay in 32 castrate male lambs of Morada Nova breed, in feedlot, fed with diets containing 0.0, 15.0, 30.0, and 45.0% of silk flower hay (SFH). The animals (12.72±1.99 kg BW) were slaughtered at 19.29±2.25 kgBW. A completely randomized design, with four diets and eigth replicates, was used. Increasing SFH levels reduced carcass conformation (2.31, 2.58, 2.17 and 1.81 points), leg perimeter (33.38, 32.17, 32.17, 30.00 cm), carcass compacity (live weigth/carcass length) (0.18, 0.18, 0.17, 0.15 cm), corrected half carcass weight (4.52, 4.63, 4.43, 3.69 kg), loin weight (0.66, 0.69, 0.64, 0.50 kg), shoulder weight (0.83, 0.86, 0.80, 0.67 kg) and rib weight (1.13, 1.09, 1.05, 0.84 kg), while there was a linear increase in leg weight (30.98, 30.81, 31.60, 34.47 kg) and mesenteric fat percentage (1.02, 0.65, 1.17, 1.42%). Increasing dietary levels of SFH to lambs affected carcass measurements and carcass yield, retail cuts and non-carcass components. It is thought that the inclusion of 30% of SFH in the diet is excellent for the maintenance of carcass characteristics in regions where there is access to this fodder plant.

Avaliou-se a utilização do feno de flor-deseda (Calotropis procera SW) (FFS) em cordeiros Morada Nova em confinamento. Utilizaram-se 32 cordeiros com peso vivo inicial de 12,72±1,99 kg e de abate 19,29±2,25 kg, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 4 tratamentos (0%, 15%, 30% e 45% de FFS) e oito repetições. O aumento dos níveis de FFS diminuiu a conformação da carcaça (2,31; 2,58; 2,17; 1,81 pontos), perímetro da coxa (33,38; 32,17; 32,17; 30,00 cm), compacidade da carcaça (0,18; 0,18; 0,17; 0,15 cm), meia carcaça reconstituída (4,52; 4,63; 4,43; 3,69 kg), lombo (0,66; 0,69; 0,64; 0,50 kg), paleta (0,83; 0,86; 0,80; 0,67 kg) e costela (1,13; 1,09; 1,05; 0,84 kg), mas aumentou o linearmente os pesos da perna (30,98; 30,81; 31,60; 34,47 kg) e a gordura mesentérica (1,02; 0,65; 1,17; 1,42%). A inclusão de FFS na dieta promoveu efeito sobre as medidas da carcaça e seus rendimentos, assim como o rendimento dos cortes comerciais e componentes não-constituintes da carcaça. Estima-se que a inclusão de até 30% de FFS na dieta é relevante na manutenção das boas características de carcaça em regiões onde se tenha oferta desta forragem.

A euritrematose bovina, causada por Eurytrema coelomaticum, tem sido relatada no Brasil. A doença pode afetar animais domésticos, incluindo ruminantes. Estes parasitos geralmente vivem nos ductos pancreáticos e ocasionalmente nos ductos biliares. Este estudo relata um quadro de caquexia em um bovino parasitado por E. coelomaticum proveniente de um rebanho de gado de corte localizado no Estado de Minas Gerais. O animal acometido apresentou perda progressiva de peso, glicosúria e cetonúria. Na necropsia o pâncreas apresentava-se diminuído de tamanho, brancacento, intensa e difusamente firme (fibrose). Vários ductos apresentavam-se dilatados e repletos de Eurytrema. Microscopicamente foi observada destruição extensa do parênquima pancreático e fibrose, ovos e parasitas intralesionais, hiperplasia ductal e inflamação multifocal crônica. Este relato descreve a perda progressiva de peso e pancreatite crônica associada a E. coelomaticum em bovino de corte no Estado de Minas Gerais.

Avaliou-se a degradação da matéria seca (MS), da proteína bruta (PB), da fibra em detergente neutro (FDN), da fibra em detergente ácido (FDA) e da hemicelulose das silagens de milho, de sorgo e de Brachiaria brizantha. Foram utilizados três novilhos Nelore, machos, fistulados no rúmen, com média de peso de 200kg. Em cada animal foram incubadas amostras das três silagens nos tempos de 0, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72 e 96 horas. Para as degradabilidades potencial e efetiva da MS (taxa de passagem no rúmen de 5%/h), a silagem de milho foi a que apresentou valores mais altos, 80,1 e 56,7%, respectivamente, seguida da silagem de sorgo, 73,0 e 45,3%, e da silagem de Brachiaria, 60,8 e 33,7%. Para a PB, o maior valor de degradabilidade foi verificado para a silagem de milho, 87,0%, seguida das silagens de sorgo, 81,8%, e de Brachiaria, 75,2%. A degradabilidade da FDN foi maior para as silagens de milho e sorgo. Para FDA, a silagem de sorgo apresentou perfil de degradação menor que a silagem de milho. Os resultados sugerem melhor qualidade da silagem de milho, seguida pela do sorgo e pela de Brachiaria.

The experiment evaluated the degradation of the dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and hemicellulose of silages of corn, sorghum and Brachiaria brizantha. Three steers averaging 200kg bw were rumen fistulated. In each animal, the three silages were incubated for 0, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 96 hours. For the potential degradability and the effective degradability (passage rate 5%/h) the corn silage presented the highest values, 80.1 and 56.7%, respectively, followed by the sorghum silage (73.0 and 45.3%), and the Brachiaria silage (60.8 and 33.7%). For CP, the highest degradability value was also verified for the corn silage (87.0%), followed by the sorghum silage (81.8%), and Brachiaria silage (75.2%). For NDF, the highest degradability values were also verified for the corn and sorghum silages. However, for ADF, the sorghum silage presented degradation profile lower than the corn silage. The results suggest a better quality of the corn silage, followed by sorghum and Brachiaria silages.

Neste trabalho, o extrato aquoso das sementes de Moringaoleifera (EASMO) foi avaliado quanto aos seus efeitos biológicos sobre ovos e larvas de Aedes aegypti no 3ºestágio de desenvolvimento e sua toxicidade sobre animais de laboratório(Daphnia magna, camundongos e ratos). O EASMO bruto revelou uma CL50 de 1.260 µg/mL, causando 99, 2 ± 2, 9% de mortalidade em 24 h na concentração de 5.200 µg/mL, embora o mesmo não tenha sido capaz de impedir a eclosão dos ovos. A atividade larvicida extinguiu-se após aquecimento do extrato a 80ºC/10 min. Diálises sucessivas do EASMO bruto resultaram em duas frações solúveis em água (Fração dializável, FD; Fração nãodializável, FND), dentre as quais apenas a FD mostrou ação larvicida. Testes de toxicidade aguda realizadosem dáfnias (CE50 de 188, 7 µg/mL) e camundongos (DL50 de446,5 mg/kg de peso corpóreo) evidenciaram baixa toxicidade. Apesar da hipertrofia tímica, o EASMO mostrou ser atóxicoapós tratamento subagudo via oral em ratos. Conclui-se, portanto, que o EASMO apresenta substâncias com capacida de larvicida contra Ae. aegypti, as quais possuem massa molecular aparente menor que 12 kDa e potencial tóxico moderado.

In this work, biological effects of the water extract of Moringa oleifera seeds (WEMOS) were assessed on eggs and 3rd instar larvae of Aedes aegypti and on its toxicity upon laboratory animals (Daphnia magna, mice and rats). Crude WEMOS showed a LC50 value of 1260µg/mL, causing 99.2 ± 2.9% larvae mortality within 24 h at 5200µg/mL, though this larvicidal activity has been lost completely at 80ºC/10 min. WEMOS did not demonstrate capacity to prevent egg hatching. After extensive dialyses of the crude WEMOS into watersoluble dialyzable (DF) and nondyalizable (NDF) fractions, only DF maintained its efficacy to kill larvae. Acute toxicity evaluations on daphnids (EC50 of 188.7µg/mL) and mice (LD50 of 446.5 mg/kg body weight) pointed out to low toxicity. Despite the thymus hypertrophy, WEMOS revealed to be harmless in orally and subacutelytreated rats. In conclusion, WEMOS has thermostable bioactive compounds against Ae. aegypti larvae with apparent molecular mass lower than 12 kDa and moderately toxic potential.

Foram utilizados 72 ciclos estrais de 37 éguas mestiças, com idade variando de quatro a 20 anos, distribuídas ao acaso em dois grupos experimentais (G I e G II) para estudar o efeito do local de deposição do sêmen no sistema genital sobre a fertilidade. As inseminações no ápice do corno uterino (G II) foram realizadas por via intravaginal profunda, utilizando-se a pipeta de inseminação IVI pippette (75cm), contendo 1/5 (3mL) da dose inseminante utilizada para o corpo do útero (15mL-G I). As éguas foram rufiadas diariamente e inseminadas às segundas, quartas e sextas-feiras, a partir de um folículo de 3,0 a 3,5cm de diâmetro, com sêmen fresco diluído em diluidor de leite desnatado-glicose. Apenas um garanhão de 20 anos e de fertilidade conhecida foi utilizado. As taxas de concepção/ciclo para as inseminações realizadas no corpo (42,9%-15/35) e ápice do corno uterino (45,9%-17/37) com concentrações médias de 489 e 102 milhões de espermatozoides móveis, respectivamente, não foram diferentes (P>0,05).

Seventy-two estral cycles of 37 mares, aging from four to 20-year-old, were randomly distributed in two experimental groups (G I and G II). The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of the semen deposition placed in the female genital system on the fertility. The inseminations in uterine horn tip (G II) were carried out by deep intravaginal way, using the pipette of insemination IVI pippette (75cm), containing 1/5 (3mL) of the inseminant dose of that utilized in uterine body or horn (15mL-G I). The mares were daily teased and inseminated on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, starting from a follicle from 3.0 to 3.5cm diameter, with fresh semen diluted in skim milk glucose extender. Only one 20 year-old stallion with wellknown fertility was utilized. The conception rates/cycles for inseminations carried out in the uterine body (42,9%-15/35) and in the uterine horn tip (45,9%-17/37) utilizing average concentrations of 489 and 102 million of mobile spermatozoa, respectively, did not present difference (P>0.05).

A faixa atlântica brasileira possui extrema diversidade ambiental, onde é expressiva a ocorrência de Argissolos, descritos e identifcados em diversos estudos, sem que tenham sido exauridas as possibilidades de interpretações. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar, por meio da análise multivariada, as principais diferenças nos atributos físicos e químicos de Argissolos da faixa atlântica brasileira. Foram analisados 91 perfis de solos oriundos de levantamentos pedológicos realizados pelo Projeto RADAMBRASIL, agrupados em três domínios geomorfológicos distintos: Planaltos Soerguidos, Planaltos Rebaixados e Tabuleiros Costeiros, por meio da análise de componentes principais e análise de função discriminante. Para isso, foram selecionadas 14 variáveis para identificar as peculiaridades de cada grupo geomorfológico e suas principais diferenças. A análise dos componentes principais demonstrou que os cinco primeiros componentes respondem por aproximadamente 70 % da variação dos dados. A análise integrada confirmou que os Argissolos dos Planaltos Soerguidos são mais rasos, associando maiores taxas de erosão com menor espessura dos horizontes Bt, e são quimicamente pobres, embora mais rejuvenescidos e rasos. Já os Argissolos nos Planaltos Rebaixados, submetidos a um clima mais seco e, ou, sazonal que os situados nos Planaltos Soerguidos e Tabuleiros Costeiros, mostram-se menos intemperizados e com maior CTC. As análises realizadas (componentes principais e análise discriminante) permitem melhor entender as relações geomorfopedológicas dos Argissolos nos diferentes domínios estudados.

The Brazilian Atlantic coast have has extreme environmental diversity, where is expressive the occurrence of Argisols, described and identified in several studies, that do not have exhausted the possibilities of interpretations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the main differences in the physical and chemical properties of Argisols of the Brazilian Atlantic coast by multivariate analysis, allowing inferences on their genesis and fertility. For this purpose, 91 soil profiles from the soil survey reports of the Project RADAMBRASIL were analyzed, and grouped into three distinct geomorphologic domains: Lower dissected plateaus - PR, High dissected plateaus - PS and Coastal tablelands - TC. These profiles were analyzed by principal components and discriminate functions. Fourteen variables were selected to identify peculiarities of each geomorphologic group and the main differences. The principal component analysis showed that the first five components account for approximately 70 % of the data variation. The integrated analysis indicated that the Argisols of the high dissected plateaus are generally shallower and that the highest erosion rates are associated with the thinnest Bt horizons. But although younger and flatter, they are chemically poor. On the other hand, the Argisols in the lower dissected plateaus, in drier and/or more seasonal climates, are less weathered and have a higher CEC. The analyses (principal component and discriminate function analysis) allowed a better understanding of the pedogeomorphological relations of the Argisols in the different domains studied.

Avaliou-se o efeito da injeção de somatotropina bovina recombinante (r-bST) sobre o ciclo estral de cabras. Foram utilizadas 24 fêmeas da raça Toggenburg, distribuídas em dois tratamentos: T1 (n=12), cabras tratadas com r-bST; e T2 (n=12), cabras tratadas com solução salina (controle). A partir da primeira injeção do tratamento, acompanhou-se o ciclo dos animais em estro até o estro subseqüente. O comprimento médio do ciclo estral e o período interovulatório não diferiram (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos. Foram verificados ciclos estrais de duas, três e quatro ondas de crescimento folicular. Não houve diferença (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos quanto ao número de ondas do ciclo estral. O número de folículos detectados com diâmetro >3mm nas cabras do T1 foi maior (P<0,05) que naquelas do T2 nos ciclos com duas (15,3±1,2 x 8,1±2,0), três (12,2±0,8 x 8,3±1,9) e quatro (12,7±1,7 x 8,8±2,5) ondas. O folículo dominante da segunda onda foi menor (P<0,05) que o da primeira e terceira ondas e também menor que o da onda ovulatória tanto para T1 quanto para T2. A concentração sérica de progesterona durante o ciclo estral não foi influenciada pelos tratamentos com r-bST (P>0,05). A r-bST não alterou a dinâmica folicular de cabras lactantes da raça Toggenburg, mas promoveu o aumento do número de folículos recrutados ³3mm durante o ciclo estral.

The effect of the r-bST injection was evaluated on the goats estrous cycles. Twenty-four Toggenburg does were used in two treatments: T1 (n=12) treated with r-bST; and T2 (n=12) treated with saline solution (control). After the first r-bST injection, the estrous cycles were checked between two estrus. The estrous cycle length and interovulatory period of the goats did not differ between treatments (P>0.05). Estrous cycles with two, three and four waves of follicular growth were observed. The number of waves during the estrous cycle were not affected by the r-bST treatment (P>0.05). The number of 3mm follicles was different between T1 and T2 (P<0.05) for estrous cycles with two (15.3±1.2 x 8.1±2.0), three (12.2±0.8 x 8.3±1.9) or four (12.7±1.7 x 8.8±2.5) waves. The dominant follicle of the second wave was smaller (P<0.05) than the one of the first and third waves and smaller than the one of the ovulatory wave. The progesterone concentration during the estrous cycle of the animals did not differ (P>0.05) between treatments. The r-bST did not affect the ovarian response during the estrous cycle. The r-bST not affected the follicular dynamic of Toggenburg lactating does, but increased the number of emerging follicles >3mm during the estrous cycle.

Quarenta e cinco cabras foram sincronizadas com o uso de esponjas intravaginais impregnadas com 60mg de acetato de medroxiprogesterona (MAP) por nove dias, associadas com 200UI de gonadotrofina coriônica equina (eCG) e 37,5µg de cloprostenol no sétimo dia. Os animais foram separados em três grupos e receberam, 24 horas após a retirada das esponjas, solução salina ou hormônios, no seguinte esquema: T1 (controle) - 1ml de solução salina; T2 - 5mg de hormônio luteinizante (LH) e T3 - 12,5µg do hormônio liberador de gonadotrofina (GnRH). Houve diferença (P<0,05) na porcentagem de animais em estro, 100,0%, 73,3% e 66,6%, para T1, T2 e T3, respectivamente. Na mesma ordem, não houve diferença (P>0,05) quanto ao intervalo da retirada da esponja ao aparecimento do estro, que foi, em média, 34,8, 29,3 e 31,5 horas, respectivamente. O intervalo médio da retirada da esponja à ovulação foi de 46,6, 52,1 e 41,6 horas, respectivamente, com diferença significativa entre T2 e T3 (P<0,01). As ovulações ocorreram, em média, 21,3, 26,8 e 22,3 horas após as aplicações (P>0,05). A aplicação de LH e do GnRH para induzir e sincronizar a ovulação em cabras fora da estação reprodutiva não apresentou resultados satisfatórios.

In order to achieve estrous synchronization, intravaginal sponges impregnated with 60mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) were implanted in 45 goats for nine days. On day 7, 200IU of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) and 37.5µg of cloprostenol were administered to each doe. The animals were randomly allocated in three treatments with 15 animals each. Twenty four hours after intravaginal sponge removal, does were administered 1ml saline solution (control T1), 5mg LH (T2) and 2.5µg GnRH (T3) intramuscular injection. Percentages of animals in estrus were 100.0; 73.3 and 66.6 (P<0.05) and average intervals from sponge removal to start of estrus were 34.8, 29.3 and 31.5 hours for T1, T2 and T3, respectively, being those differences not statistically significant. The average intervals from sponge removal to ovulation were 46.6, 52.1 and 41.6 hours for T1, T2 and T3, respectively, with the difference between T2 and T3 being statistically significant (P<0.01). Ovulation time averages were 21.3, 26.8 and 22.3 hours after injections for T1, T2 and T3 , respectively.

Utilizaram-se 25 ejaculados de cinco garanhões da raça Mangalarga Marchador, para avaliar dois protocolos de congelamento. No primeiro tratamento, resfriou-se o sêmen até 5ºC (curva de resfriamento - CR) antes do congelamento, no segundo, congelou-se o sêmen sem resfriamento (SC). Compararam-se duas formas de descongelamento, a 37ºC e a 75ºC/sete segundos. Os protocolos foram avaliados pelo teste de termo resistência (TTR - motilidade total e vigor) e pela funcionalidade da membrana plasmática (teste hiposmótico e eosina nigrosina). A motilidade total no tempo zero do TTR foi melhor (P<0,05) para o sêmen do tratamento CR, quando comparado com o do SC, em ambas as temperaturas de descongelamento, respectivamente, 46,7% e 21,0% (descongelamento a 37ºC), e 44,2% e 24,6% (descongelamento a 75ºC). Na mesma ordem, o número de espermatozóides vivos foi maior (P<0,05) no tratamento CR, 71,0% e 54,6% (descongelamento a 37ºC), e 77,4% e 54,1% (descongelamento a 75ºC). O sêmen do tratamento CR apresentou maior reação (P<0,05) ao teste hiposmótico e maior vigor (P<0,05) que o do SC. O sêmen descongelado a 75ºC apresentou melhor vigor (P<0,05) que o descongelado a 37ºC, independentemente do protocolo de congelamento. Os resultados mostraram, in vitro, o efeito benéfico do resfriamento do sêmen antes do congelamento.

Two freezing protocols and two thawing methods were evaluated on 25 ejaculates from five stallions of the Mangalarga Marchador breed. In the first freezing method, semen was cooled to 5ºC before freezing (CR); and in the second, semen at room temperature was frozen directly (SC). The two thawing methods were thawing semen at 37ºC for 30 seconds versus thawing at 75ºC for 7 seconds. Thawed semen was evaluated by the thermal resistance test (TRT- total motility and vigor) and by integrity of sperm membranes (the hypo-osmotic test and the eosine-nigrosine test). Semen that was cooled before freezing had higher (P<0.05) motility immediately post-thaw than semen that was more abruptly frozen (46.7% versus 21.0% for semen thawed at 37ºC and 44.1% versus 24.5% for semen thawed at 75ºC, respectively). At both thawing temperatures, the percentage of live spermatozoa was higher (P<0.05) in CR treatment than in the SC method (71% versus 54.6% for semen thawed at 37ºC and 77.3% versus 54.1% for semen thawed at 75ºC, respectively). The CR treatment also resulted in better hypo-osmotic test results and better semen vigor than did the SC treatment. Semen thawed at 75ºC showed better (P<0.05) vigor than semen thawed at 37ºC, independent of the semen freezing method. In conclusion, there were substantial benefits on subsequent semen quality from cooling of semen before it was frozen.
