ABSTRACT Congenital stationary night blindness encompasses a heterogeneous group of inherited retinal dystrophies characterized by impaired scotopic vision from birth. This article provides a comprehensive overview of congenital stationary night blindness, focusing on its genetic underpinnings, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic approaches, with a specific emphasis on variants in the CACNA1F gene. Through a detailed case report of a 49-year-old male with congenital stationary night blindness attributed to a hemizygous variant in CACNA1F, we illustrate typical clinical presentations and correlate them with underlying genetic abnormalities. The discussion highlights the importance of integrating advanced diagnostic techniques, such as optical coherence tomography and electrophysiological testing, with genetic analysis for accurate diagnosis and personalized management strategies. Additionally, the genotype-phenotype correlations underscore the significance of genetic screening in predicting disease severity and guiding therapeutic interventions. This article contributes to the understanding of congenital stationary night blindness pathophysiology and emphasizes the role of genetic evaluation in facilitating targeted approaches for diagnosis, familly counseling, and potential future gene therapies.

ABSTRACT Objective Sepsis-associated delirium is a common cerebral manifestation in patients with sepsis, potentially caused by a combination of neuroinflammation and other neurophysiological disorders. This study investigated the expression of neuron-specific enolase and Tau protein as biomarkers in patients with sepsis-associated delirium. While neuron-specific enolase and Tau protein are known to be associated with brain injury, their diagnostic potential in patients with sepsis-associated delirium is not well understood. Methods This cross-sectional pilot study evaluated plasma levels of neuron-specific enolase and Tau protein in patients with delirium and sepsis to explore their potential for identifying sepsis in patients admitted to the emergency department. Results A total of 25 patients with delirium were analyzed, 56% of whom had sepsis. Patients with sepsis exhibited significantly higher neuron-specific enolase levels (2.7ng/mL [95%CI= 2.2-3.2] versus 1.3 ng/mL [95%CI= 0.8-2.5], p<0.003) and Tau protein levels (96.1pg/mL [95%CI= 77.0-111.3] versus 43.0pg/mL [95%CI= 31.2-84.5], p<0.003) compared to patients without sepsis. Neuron-specific enolase and Tau protein thresholds of >2.08ng/mL and >59.27pg/mL, respectively, demonstrated 90% specificity for identifying sepsis in patients. Conclusion Neuron-specific enolase and Tau protein levels were significantly higher in patients with sepsis than in those without, underscoring their potential ability to identify the infectious etiology of delirium in older patients admitted to emergency departments.
Abstract Birds represent one of the most diverse groups of organisms, particularly in tropical regions. Despite this, our understanding of tropical bird reproductive strategies remains limited, and many theories on the subject are based on non-tropical species. Furthermore, existing studies on the breeding biology of tropical birds have focused on only a few aspects, leaving much of the information speculative. To address this gap, we studied pairs of the Amazonian Motmot (Momotus momota), a widespread neotropical bird, common in forest fragments of central Brazil. We used the mark-recapture method to track pairs over seven reproductive periods. The Amazonian Motmot pairs exhibited characteristics typical of a monogamous social reproductive system, including the absence of dichromism and low sexual dimorphism, pronounced paternal care, solitary nesting, and year-round territoriality. Additionally, pairs remained together for multiple reproductive periods, with a high probability of reuniting with the same partner in subsequent periods (45.5%–73.6%), indicating long-term social monogamy. This study provides significant insights into the reproductive strategies of tropical birds, focusing on nest site selection, parental care, territoriality, and pair bonding in a widely distributed species. Future research should explore broader patterns across different biomes in the neotropics, which host the richest avifauna globally.

Abstract: The influenza-like illness (ILI) sentinel surveillance operates in Brazil to identify respiratory viruses of public health relevance circulating in the country and was first implemented in 2000. Recently, the COVID-19 pandemic reinforced the importance of early detection of the circulation of new viruses in Brazil. Therefore, an analysis of the design of the ILI sentinel surveillance is timely. To this end, we simulated a sentinel surveillance network, identifying the municipalities that would be part of the network according to the criteria defined in the design of the ILI sentinel surveillance and, based on data from tested cases of severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) from 2014 to 2019, we drew samples for each sentinel municipality per epidemiological week. The draw was performed 1,000 times, obtaining the median and 95% quantile interval (95%QI) of virus positivity by Federative Unit and epidemiological week. According to the ILI sentinel surveillance design criteria, sentinel units would be in 64 municipalities, distributed mainly in capitals and their metropolitan areas, recommending 690 weekly samples. The design showed good sensitivity (91.65% considering the 95%QI) for qualitatively detecting respiratory viruses, even those with low circulation. However, there was important uncertainty in the quantitative estimate of positivity, reaching at least 20% in 11.34% of estimates. The results presented here aim to assist in evaluating and updating the ILI sentinel surveillance design. Strategies to reduce uncertainty in positivity estimates need to be evaluated, as does the need for greater spatial coverage.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate different proportions of cactus pear in silage with BRS Capiaçu grass, along with a 10% inclusion of ground corn grain, focusing on aerobic stability, fermentative profile, chemical composition, and digestibility. The treatments included cactus pear (Opuntia spp.) at increasing levels of 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60% of the natural matter in the silage with BRS Capiaçu grass, plus 10% ground corn grain. Additionally, a control silage composed of BRS Capiaçu grass without ground corn was used. A completely randomized design was employed with six treatments and eight replications. The BRS Capiaçu grass was harvested after 100 days of regrowth. For ensiling, experimental PVC silos of known weights and of 50 cm long and 10 cm in diameter were used. The breakdown of aerobic stability of the silage without cactus pear (BRS Capiaçu grass with 10% ground corn) occurred 144 h after opening the silo. The inclusion of cactus pear in the silage with BRS Capiaçu grass and 10% ground corn grain resulted in a linear increase in pH value. Among the silages with cactus pear inclusion, there was no significant difference in gas losses (P = 0.46) and dry matter (DM) recovery (P = 0.43). There was no significant difference between the silages in terms of acetic acid content (P = 0.91). The content of DM and total digestible nutrients was lower in the control silage compared with the other silages. For each percentage unit of cactus pear inclusion, there was a reduction of 0.1195% in DM content. Additionally, for every 1% inclusion of cactus pear in silage with BRS Capiaçu grass, there was an increase of 0.2007 percentage units in DM digestibility. The optimal proportion of cactus pear in silage with BRS Capiaçu grass and 10% ground corn is up to 60% of the natural matter.

Abstract The present study aimed to investigate the contextual inequalities of specialized public dental care (SPDC) in Brazil. The outcome was the trajectory of dental specialized production in municipalities with SPDC (from 2015 to 2017) obtained by group-based trajectory modeling. A Poisson regression model was used to analyze the factors associated with the high trajectory of SPDC production. The inequality indicators for SPDC production were the slope index and the concentration index according to contextual factors. The study included 954 SPDC units distributed across 893 municipalities. Among the municipalities evaluated, 62.9% had a low trajectory of SPDC. Large-sized municipalities had the highest production (IRR = 2.84, 95%CI: 1.94–4.14) and the southern region had the lowest production (IRR = 0.73, 95%CI: 0.58–0.92). Municipalities presenting a very high human development index (HDI) showed the greatest SPDC production (IRR = 3.34, 95%CI: 1.09–10.24), as well as municipalities with the highest tertile of schooling rate (IRR = 1.23, 95%CI: 1.00–1.50). The absolute inequality was 52.1 percentage points for the average monthly wage (p < 0.001), 61.0 percentage points for the HDI (p < 0.001), -22.1 for infant mortality rate (p <0.001), and 14.8 for the schooling rate (p = 0.012). Thus, there are contextual inequalities in the Brazilian SPDC. Higher scores for social indicators were associated with better SPDC performance.

Aim Venous blood derivatives (VBDs) have been suggested as substitutes for Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) to improve the clinical transition of cell-based therapies. The literature is not clear about which is the best VBDs substitute. The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of VBDs on cell viability and describe a new method to seed these cells in a 3D Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF). Methods Blood was processed to obtain Platelet-Poor Plasma from PRF (P-PRF), Human Serum (HS), Platelet-Poor Plasma from PRP (P-PRP), activated-PRP (a-PRP), and Platelet lysate (PL). Cells were supplemented with each VBD at 10% and FBS at 10% was the control. Cell viability (fibroblast 3T3/NIH) test was evaluated with MTT assay in two ways: i) cell-seeded and expanded with VBD; ii) cell-seed with FBS and expanded with VBD. To seed the Fibrin construct, cells were suspended in PBS and dropped into the blood sample before performing Choukroun’s protocol for PRF. Constructs were cultured for 7 days in VBD supplements and FBS. Histological and Immunohistochemical analysis with vimentin was performed. Cell viability was analyzed by one-way ANOVA. Results VBD’s production time was very heterogeneous. Cells expanded in HS and a-PRP has grown faster. VBD-supplemented culture media provided cell culture highly sensible to trypsin/EDTA 0.25%. Cells seeded and expanded with VBD presented viability comparable to FBS in HS, a-PRP, and P-PRP (p>0.05) and lower in P-PRF and PL groups (p<0.05). The viability of cell seed with FBS and expanded with VBD was similar between P-PRF, a-PRP, PL, and FBS (p>0.05) and lower in HS and P-PRP (p<0.005). PRF-seeded cells showed a positive expression of vimentin and were able to maintain all cells supplemented with VBD. Conclusion VBD supplements were able to maintain fibroblast cells in 2D and 3D cultures. The new method of the fibrin-cell construct was efficient to insert the cells into the fibrin network.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital disease that manifests at birth or in childhood and has an unknown etiology, with no ethnic or gender predilection. Pain management, common in many cases, is challenging due to the complexity of the factors involved. The aim of this report is to demonstrate the effective use of a multimodal approach, including medicinal cannabis, in the treatment of pain in a child with KTS. CASE REPORT: this is the case of a child suffering from CTS who had severe chronic pain, significantly compromising his quality of life. The pain was managed with pharmacological therapies, including the use of medicinal cannabis as a therapeutic alternative when conventional treatments proved insufficient. The multimodal approach, which included the use of tetrahydrocannabinol, led to a reduction in pain and an improvement in the patient’s quality of life. Medical cannabis therapy proved to be an effective option, especially in cases of pain refractory to other interventions. CONCLUSION: The treatment of pain in patients with KTS should be multimodal, with an emphasis on non-invasive approaches. The use of medicinal cannabis is a viable and safe alternative, particularly in situations where conventional treatments do not provide adequate relief.

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

ABSTRACT Objective: Previous studies indicated that face masks reduce the probability of infection by SARS-CoV-2 but did not examine the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 viral load and mask usage. This study analyzed this relationship. Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated patients admitted to a public Emergency Care Unit in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil, between October 2020 and March 2021. Convenience samples were recruited during the study period. Adult patients with COVID-19 symptoms were invited to participate after being examined by a physician according to the Emergency Care Unit routine. This study included 441 adults with mild symptoms diagnosed with COVID-19 via RT-PCR, who were tested until the 14th day after symptom onset. Participants were interviewed about mask usage, oropharyngeal swabs were collected, and the SARS-CoV-2 viral load was measured using RT-PCR. The difference between the SARS-CoV-2 viral load in the groups of individuals who regularly used and did not use masks was subjected to a hypothesis test. Results: Of the patients who had swabs collected 1-5 days after symptom onset, 64.9% of those not using masks regularly and 45.5% of those using masks regularly presented a high SARS-CoV-2 viral load. This difference was statistically significant (p=0.0073). Considering only the patients who had swabs collected 4-8 days after symptom onset, 44.1% of those not using masks regularly and 30.8% of those using masks regularly presented a high SARS-CoV-2 viral load; this difference was statistically significant (p=0.0364). Conclusion: When people who regularly wear a face mask contract COVID-19, they have a significantly lower probability of having a high viral load of SARS-CoV-2 compared to those who do not regularly wear masks.

Abstract In the present work, the electrical properties of BaFe12O19 (BaM) M-type hexaferrite were investigated in the low-temperature regime, something new in the literature on this material. The technique used was impedance spectroscopy, with measurements performed in the temperature range of 300 to 50 K, with the frequency of the oscillating external electric field varying from 1 Hz to 1 MHz. Our results show that BaM has a semiconductor character like other hexaferrites already reported in the literature.
