Resumen En la Región Sur del Ecuador se comparó la producción de avena (Avena sativa L.) y trigo (Triticum vulgare L.) obtenida a partir de un sistema de forraje verde hidropónico (FVH), frente al sistema de producción convencional o a campo abierto (CA). El experimento para cada sistema y cultivo se estableció bajo un diseño de bloques al azar, instalando cuatro tratamientos (dos en FVH y dos a CA), con tres repeticiones cada uno. Se evaluó la altura de la planta (AP) de cada cultivo para cada sistema productivo, mientras que para cada sistema y cultivo se determinó la producción de biomasa, la proteína cruda (PC) (p < 0,05) y el cociente de la relación beneficio-costo (B/C). La mayor altura se obtuvo en trigo FVH con 17,67 cm y en avena CA con 82,78 cm. En relación con la producción de biomasa, el trigo FVH alcanzó 23,57 kg/m2 de materia verde (MV) o 3,10 kg/m2 de materia seca (MS); el resto de tratamientos estuvo por debajo de 13 kg/m2 de MV (1,39 kg/m2 de MS); el porcentaje de proteína en el trigo CA fue mayor con 19,90%, seguido de avena CA, mientras que el trigo y la avena FVH tuvieron valores de alrededor del 10%; en beneficio-costo, el trigo FVH obtuvo un puntaje mayor de 1,46 frente a la avena FVH (0,67), el trigo CA (0,26) y la avena CA (1,00). Por esta razón, la complementariedad de los dos sistemas de producción, especialmente en el cultivo de trigo, podría ser una opción para la alimentación animal.

Abstract In the Southern Region of Ecuador, the production of oat (Avena sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum vulgare L.) obtained through a Hydroponic Green Forage (HGF) system was compared to the conventional or Open Field (OF) production system. For each production system and crop, the experiment was established under a complete block design, installing four treatments (two in HGF and two in OF), with three repetitions each. The plant height (PH) of each crop was evaluated for each production system, while for each system and crop, the production of biomass, crude protein (CP) (p < 0.05), and the benefit-cost ratio (B/C) were determined. The highest PH was obtained in HGF wheat with 17.67 cm and in OF oat with 82.78 cm. In biomass production, HGF wheat reached 23.57 kg/m2 green matter (GM) or 3.10 kg/m2 dry matter (DM); the rest of the treatments were below 13 kg/m2 GM (1.39 kg/m2 DM). The percentage of protein in OF wheat was higher with 19.90 %, followed by OF oat, whereas HGF wheat and HGF oat exhibited values of around 10 %. Concerning the benefit-cost ratio, the HGF wheat showed values of 1.46 compared to HGF oat with 0.67, OF wheat with 0.26, and OF oat with 1.00. For this reason, the complementarity of the two production systems, especially in wheat cropping, could be an option for animal feed.

Abstract The strawberry (Fragaria vesca) is a crop of great acceptance worldwide. In Ecuador, most of the production is done in open field, presenting limitations by the attack of biotic factors and abiotic factors that generate losses in the production. This research was carried out in the province of Loja, since there was no precise information on this crop, and research on the use of protected systems (low tunnels). The main objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of strawberry production on the two production systems (open field and low tunnels), with Albion and Monterey varieties, as well as to analyze the costs and profitability of production. The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Station of Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja, under low tunnels and open field conditions, in which the phenological and productive development of the strawberry was compared. The results found in the study in the two open field and low tunnel systems did not present a statistical difference in the physiological variables evaluated, which allow to conclude that the low tunnel cover on the crop did not influence the development of the two varieties. In relation to the cost-benefit analysis of production, it was higher in the low tunnel system, the investment was stronger at the beginning, but it must be indicated that there are several productive advantages in relation to the open field that generate benefits for the strawberry producer.

Resumen La fresa (Fragaria vesca) es un cultivo de gran aceptación a nivel mundial, no siendo la excepción en Ecuador. La mayor parte de la producción se realiza a campo abierto, haciendo que existan limitaciones por el ataque de factores bióticos y la influencia de factores abióticos, generando pérdidas en la producción. El presente trabajo se planteó en la provincia de Loja al no existir información precisa de este cultivo e investigaciones sobre el uso de sistemas protegidos (microtúnel). El objetivo principal fue evaluar el efecto de la producción de fresa en los dos sistemas de producción (Campo abierto y microtúnel), con variedades Albion y Monterey; además analizar el costo y rentabilidad de la producción. El sistema a campo abierto fue considerado como un tratamiento testigo para su evaluación frente al de microtunel. El experimento se realizó en la Estación Agropecuaria de la Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja, bajo condiciones de microtúnel y campo abierto, en la cuales se comparó el desarrollo fenológico y productivo de la fresa. Los resultados encontrados en el estudio en los dos sistemas a campo abierto y microtúnel no presentaron una diferencia estadística en las variables fisiológicas evaluadas, concluyendo que la cubierta con microtúnel al cultivo no influyó en el desarrollo en las dos variedades. En relación al análisis de costos-beneficio de la producción, este fue superior en el sistema microtúnel, la inversión fue más fuerte al inicio, sin embargo, se debe indicar que existen varias ventajas productivas en relación con campo abierto, generando beneficios al productor de fresa.

Abstract The scope of this study is to examine the status of Food Insecurity (FI) in each country included in the South American community. To achieve this and considering that it is a current and multifactorial problem, its four pillars were analyzed: food availability, access, stability and use. As a result, it is observed that the misuse of food is the most likely cause of FI in the South American community, however, the lack of availability and inaccessibility of food causes great concern in certain states of the subregion. The most probable origin is the inadequate promotion of good eating habits, in addition to misguided policies that hinder the correct production and/or motivation of the peasants to continue carrying out their activities in agriculture. This problem needs to be addressed as soon as possible as, although it originates in not having the money and/or the necessary nutritional habits, it leads to serious health problems for the inhabitants. The consensus reached is that it is important to enhance policies to eradicate FI in South America, starting with support for food production, and following that up with nutritional interventions that improve the dietary habits of the inhabitants.

Resumen El presente estudio pretende explorar el estado de Inseguridad Alimentaria (IA) en cada país perteneciente a la comunidad sudamericana. Para ello y considerando que es un problema vigente y de carácter multifactorial, se analizaron sus cuatro pilares: disponibilidad, acceso, estabilidad y utilización de alimentos. Como resultado, se observa que la mala utilización de alimentos, es la causa más propensa a causar IA en la comunidad sudamericana, no obstante, la indisponibilidad e inaccesibilidad hacia los alimentos, causa gran preocupación en ciertos estados de la subregión. El origen más probable es la baja promoción de buenos hábitos alimenticios, además de políticas erradas que impiden la correcta producción y/o motivación de los campesinos a seguir ejerciendo sus actividades en el agro. Este problema debe ser mitigado lo antes posible, ya que, aunque empieza por no tener el dinero y/o los hábitos alimenticios necesarios, termina con graves problemas de salud hacia los pobladores. Consideramos importante fortalecer políticas para erradicar la IA sudamericana, iniciando con el apoyo hacia la producción de alimentos, para finalizar con intervenciones nutricionales que permitan mejorar los hábitos alimenticios de los habitantes.

Abstract This study sought to determine learning styles by sex and degree, as well as the most effective teaching strategies in higher education in Ecuador. With a focus group made up of edaphology students from the Private Technical University of Loja (UTPL), a descriptive study was conducted using the Honey-Alonso Learning Styles Questionnaire (CHAEA). The research also explored which teaching strategies had the greatest impact. Preferences by degree and sex were moderate to low for the four learning styles, and the most effective strategies were videos, lectures, and field-laboratory-classroom work. It was shown that students do not learn in just one way, but have different learning styles, and therefore strategies should be applied that respond to a wider range of learning capacities.

Resumen El propósito de esta investigación fue determinar los estilos de aprendizaje por género y carrera, así como las estrategias de enseñanza más efectivas en educación superior en Ecuador. Se tomó como grupo focal a estudiantes de Edafología de la Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL) y se desarrolló un estudio descriptivo, utilizando el Cuestionario Honey-Alonso de Estilos de Aprendizaje (CHAEA); además, se consultaron las estrategias que más impactaron en la enseñanza. Las preferencias fueron de moderadas a bajas para los cuatro estilos de aprendizaje según la carrera y género; las estrategias más efectivas fueron: video, clase magistral y trabajo de campo-laboratorio-aula. Se evidenció que los educandos no aprenden de una única manera, sino que tienen diversos estilos de aprendizaje, por lo que se deberían aplicar estrategias que amplíen el rango de capacidades de aprendizaje.
