Abstract: Engineered wood products need alternatives of raw materials to their production. The hybrid Eucalyptus urograndis has great potential to supply the demand of this industrial sector. In this context, the present paper aims to analyse the feasibility of using Eucalyptus urograndis in glued laminated timber (glulam) production. To this end, four groups with ten glulam beams each, were produced and tested. An extensive experimental program was performed in order to determine: the stiffness and bending strength of the beams; and the compression strength parallel to grain of the beams. The performance of structural adhesives was verified based on shear tests of glue lines. The experimental mean of stiffness was higher than 14675 MPa and the characteristic value of compression strength parallel to grain achieved a value above 40 MPa. Nevertheless, failure mode of the glulam beams showed that finger-joints reduced bending strength. The glulam beams produced with Eucalyptus urograndis proved to be a feasible alternative due to their mechanical properties. However, this material presents difficulties in finger-joints adhesion.

Resumo A escoabilidade dos produtos agrícolas é importante fator a ser considerado na pós-colheita, impactando diretamente no número de operações e no dimensionamento de maquinários. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar e determinar o coeficiente K e as propriedades de fluxo de grãos de café em função de diferentes níveis de torra, granulometria, temperatura e tempo de armazenamento. Grãos de café foram torrados nos níveis média clara e moderadamente escura, e depois moídos nas granulometrias fina, média e grossa. Um lote adicional de grãos de café não foi moído. As amostras foram armazenadas a 10 °C e 30 °C e analisadas durante o armazenamento (0, 30, 60, 120 e 180 dias) em relação aos parâmetros: coeficientes interno e externo de atrito, ângulo de atrito interno, ângulo de atrito interno efetivo, ângulo de atrito com a parede (concreto, aço e madeira) e o coeficiente de pressão lateral (coeficiente K). O ângulo de atrito interno variou significativamente com a granulometria e o nível de torra. A torra moderadamente escura e a granulometria fina obtiveram maiores valores (ao redor de 29,5 °) de ângulo de atrito com a parede. Quanto ao material em que as amostras foram colocadas, a madeira foi o material no qual as amostras apresentaram os maiores valores de ângulo de atrito com a parede, seguidas pelas amostras colocadas no concreto e no aço, quando comparadas na mesma temperatura de armazenamento, no mesmo nível de torra e na mesma granulometria. Os grãos de café inteiros foram classificados como de fluxo livre. A granulometria fina levou a um fluxo coesivo, de acordo com a função fluxo. Café torrado em média clara, inteiro, requer estruturas de armazenagem que suportem maior pressão, de acordo com os valores do coeficiente K.

Abstract Flowability of agricultural products is an important factor to be considered at post-harvest, thus impacting directly on number of operations and the design of machinery. This study aimed to evaluate and determine the K coefficient and flow properties as a function of different levels of roasting, grain size, temperature and storage. Coffee beans were roasted at medium light and moderately dark, then ground at fine, medium and coarse sizes. An additional coffee lot was not ground. Samples were stored at 10 ºC and 30 ºC and analyzed during storage (0, 30, 60, 120 and 180 days), regarding internal and external friction coefficients, angle of internal friction, effective angle of internal friction, wall friction angle (concrete, rough steel and wood) and lateral pressure coefficient (K coefficient). Angle of internal friction varied significantly due to particle size and roast degree. Moderately dark roast with fine particle size led to higher values (about 29.5 º) of wall friction angle. The wood sample was the material with the highest values of wall friction angle, followed by the concrete and steel samples, when compared at the same storage temperature, roast degree and particle size. Whole coffee was classified as free-flowing. Fine particle size leads to cohesive flow characteristic, according to the flow function. Coffee roasted at medium light, kept whole requires storage facilities with higher pressure support, accordingly to the K coefficient values.

Lightweight, sturdy and eco-friendly, this material has become one of the most important constructive methods in the world. CLT are panels formed by layers of wood glued to each other orthogonally, always in odd numbers, symmetrical with respect to the central layer. The dimensions can vary from 50 to 500 mm in thickness, and depend on the application, which can be a slab or wall element, the width and length are adjustable, being able to produce up to 20 meters in length. This work presents tests and results obtained in two types of CLT panels produced in a laboratory. One panel made with Pinus taeda and MUF (melamine urea formaldehyde) adhesive and other one made Eucalyptus urograndis with PU (polyurethane) adhesive. The objective was to evaluate the stiffness and to through the analytical method using the Analytical Design Method (γ-method), and through experimental tests in the laboratory, comparing the values obtained in each method. In the experimental test, the Eucalyptus panel obtained better strength and stiffness than Pinus panel, and in analytical calculation using the Analytical Design Method (γ-method), obtained Elastic Modulus (MOE) values slightly above experimental values, and stiffness values (EI) considerably below experimental values. Concluded that the Cross Laminated Timber produced with Pinus and Eucalyptus planted in Brazil obtained resistance and stiffness considered suitable for structural use and showed that it could be a new alternative of constructive material to be used in the country.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve a finalidade de avaliar o perfil de temperatura em duas vigas mista de madeira e concreto com seção transversal T e sistema de conexão metálico submetida à altas temperaturas. O sistema de conexão, neste caso, foi efetuado por barras de aço comum, com 12,5 mm de diâmetro, igualmente espaçadas ao longo da interface madeira-concreto. A seção transversal T da viga foi composta por uma alma de madeira com dimensões 5 cm x 15 cm e mesa de concreto com 30 cm x 5 cm. Foi considerado para as vigas mistas um tempo de exposição ao fogo de 40 minutos. A simulação numérica foi realizada a partir da utilização do software ANSYS [1], versão 10.0. Os resultados das simulações numéricas foram comparados com os resultados experimentais de temperatura obtidos para as duas vigas mistas, as quais foram instrumentadas com termopares e submetidas à altas temperaturas em um forno horizontal de ensaios construído na EESC/USP para tal finalidade. Os resultados numéricos e experimentais apresentaram uma boa concordância neste caso. Como resultado, são apresentados os perfis de temperatura na seção transversal para vários tempos de aquecimento, assim como toda estratégia de modelagem numérica e os elementos finitos utilizados na determinação dos perfis de temperatura.

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was the evaluation of the temperature profile in two composite timber and concrete beam with cross-section T and metallic connection system subjected to high temperatures. The connection system, in this case, was performed by use of steel bars with 12.5 mm diameter, equally spaced, along the concrete-timber interface. The cross section T of the beam consisted of a timber piece with dimensions 5 cm x 15 cm connected of a concrete slab with 30 cm x 5 cm. To the composite beams, a total time of fire exposure equal to 40 minutes was considered. The numerical modeling of the system was carried out using the ANSYS software [1], version 10.0. The results of numerical simulations were compared with the experimental results of temperature obtained by the two composite beam, which were instrumented with thermocouples and subjected to high temperature in a horizontal furnace constructed on EESC/USP for this purpose. The numerical and experimental results showed good agreement in this case. As a result, the temperature profiles are shown in cross section for various heating times and all numerical modeling strategy and the finite element used to determine the temperature profiles.

Resumo Esta pesquisa apresenta o estudo experimental da influência das chapas com dentes estampados (CDE) na perda de protensão em tabuleiros treliçados protendidos transversalmente para aplicação em pontes de madeira. Como os conectores diminuem o contato direto das peças de madeira, as perdas de protensão apresentam valores diferentes dos obtidos nos tabuleiros laminados protendidos convencionais. Dessa forma, esta pesquisa apresenta um estudo experimental em uma faixa, em que as perdas de protensão são avaliadas por meio de instrumentação contínua em sala com temperatura e umidade controlada. Com isso foi possível identificar os níveis de tensão nas barras após o período de 60 dias, que corresponde à fase inicial de serviço da ponte, com o objetivo de fornecer dados preliminares para o estabelecimento de planos de protensão. Os valores obtidos experimentalmente foram ajustados aos modelos teóricos e empíricos por meio do método dos mínimos quadrados. Os resultados demonstraram, pela análise dos valores médios, que não foram notadas diferenças significativas entre o sistema com chapas com dentes estampados e o sistema sem chapas; porém, faz-se necessária a realização de mais ensaios para que se possa ter uma amostra de maior representatividade.

Abstract This paper presents an experimental study on the influence of metal plate connected on loss in prestress in wood bridge decks. As the connectors reduce the direct contact of the wood, the losses in prestress present values different from those obtained in conventional laminated prestressed plates. This paper presents an experimental study where the losses in prestress were assessed by continuous instrumentation in a room with controlled temperature and humidity. That allowed the identification of the stress levels on the elements after 60 days, which corresponds to the initial stage of bridge service, with the aim of providing preliminary data to establish prestressing plans. The experimental values were adjusted to the theoretical and empirical models by the least squares method. Through mean value analysis, the results demonstrated that no significant differences occurred between the metal-plate-connected system and the system without connectors, however, it more tests are needed in order to obtain a more representative sample.

Resumo As pontes protendidas de madeira consistem em sistemas estruturais alternativos, mais leves do que as pontes tradicionais, e apresentam grande rigidez e facilidade de montagem. No Brasil a primeira ponte protendida de madeira foi projetada e construída sobre o Rio Monjolinho, em São Carlos, SP. A confiabilidade desse tipo de estrutura é um dos pontos de maior preocupação técnica, embora essa forma de avaliação ainda não seja utilizada em projetos de pontes de madeira. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a confiabilidade estrutural do sistema laminado protendido de madeira da ponte projetada sobre o Rio Monjolinho, com foco especial na resistência à flexão e na perda de protensão do sistema, considerando-se para tanto um conjunto variado de trens-tipo. O tabuleiro foi avaliado como uma viga equivalente, baseado no comportamento de placa ortotrópica, e para verificar a segurança da ponte um estudo de confiabilidade foi realizado considerando ações reais obtidas por meio dos dados da concessionária Centrovias. Os resultados das análises de confiabilidade revelaram que a ponte protendida de madeira apresentou índices de confiabilidade compatíveis para a maioria dos carregamentos simulados do tráfego, embora para alguns tipos de caminhões a ponte tenha apresentado índices de confiabilidade abaixo do recomendado pelas normas internacionais.

Abstract Prestressed wooden bridges are alternative structural systems that are lighter than traditional bridges and present high stiffness and portability. In Brazil, the first prestressed timber bridge was designed and built over the Monjolinho River (São Carlos - SP). The reliability of this structure is a major technical concern, even though this kind of assessment is not yet used in timber bridge projects. The aim of this research study was to evaluate the structural reliability of the laminated prestressed system of the timber bridge designed for the Monjolinho River, with special focus on the system's bending strength and prestess losses, considering a varied set of live loads. The deck was assessed as an equivalent beam, based on orthotropic plate behaviour. To check the safety of the bridge, a reliability study was conducted considering actual actions obtained from the data provided by Centrovias, the road's concession company. The results of the reliability tests showed that the prestressed timber bridge presented reliability rates compatible with most simulated traffic loads, but for some types of trucks the bridge presented reliability indices below those recommended by international standards.

RESUMO Neste trabalho avaliou-se numericamente, a partir da utilização do software ANSYS, versão 10.0, o comportamento de ligações metálicas efetuadas por parafusos auto-atarraxantes com diâmetro igual a 11 mm, dispostos em X, em corpos de prova confeccionados com madeira de reflorestamento do tipo Eucalipto urograndis. A rigidez k (força versus deslizamento) do sistema de ligação foi avaliada, neste caso, por meio da simulação de ensaios de cisalhamento direto (direct shear), considerando-se 1/2 estrutura com carregamento aplicado até a ruptura do corpo de prova. A estratégia de se utilizar 1/2 estrutura simétrica teve o objetivo de reduzir o tempo de processamento numérico do modelo de corpo de prova. Na modelagem da madeira e dos conectores de aço foi utilizado o elemento finito solid45. Os resultados da análise numérica foram comparados com resultados obtidos a partir de ensaios experimentais realizados em corpos de prova de madeira com a mesma configuração e carregamentos utilizados na análise experimental. A calibração do modelo numérico foi realizada a partir da comparação da curva numérico-experimental "força aplicada" versus "deslizamento obtido". Os resultados numéricos obtidos para a resistência e rigidez k do sistema de ligação X mostraram uma boa concordância com os resultados experimentais, sendo que os resultados experimentais foram relativamente mais conservadores que os resultados numéricos. Como resultado apresenta-se, principalmente, a estratégia de modelagem numérica utilizada, neste caso.

ABSTRACT In this work was evaluated by numerical simulation, from the use of ANSYS software, version 10.0, the behavior of steel connections made by self-tapping screws with diameter of and 11 mm, in X position, in specimens made with reforested wood of the type Eucalyptus urograndis. The stiffness k (force versus displacement) of the connection system was evaluated, in this case, by direct shear testing simulation (direct shear), considering 1/2 structure with applied load until the rupture of the specimen. The strategy of using 1/2 symmetrical structure of specimen aimed to reduce the time of numeric processing of the specimen. In the modeling of wood and steel connectors was used the finite element solid45. The numerical analysis results were compared with results obtained from experimental tests on wood specimens with same configuration and loadings used in experimental analysis. The calibration of the numerical model was made from the comparison of numerical and experimental curves "applied force" versus "obtained displacement". The numerical results for the strength and stiffness k of the connection system analyzed X showed a good agreement with the experimental results and the values of experimental results were fairly smaller than the numerical values. As a result presents mainly the entire numerical modeling strategy used in this case.

Created in the 1940s, the splice finger-joint type for wood has now been more used to compose structural materials wood base as Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam) and Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). The main advantage of this amendment is to provide a simple and economical way to join timber parts on segments. This study evaluated by means of tensile tests the capacity of this type of joint (structural dimension of 21mm) to bond together Lyptus® wood beams (a Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus urophyla hybrid) using Jowat polyurethane glue (Model 680.20) as compared to similar seamless beams. The results indicate that the seamless beams are 47.72% more resistant to traction (in characteristic values) than those with finger joints. However, to form structural elements where there is redundancy overlapping parts, such as Glulam and CLT, the values obtained can be considered satisfactory. Also noted is that denser samples have better traction results due to better bonding of the densest parts. The use of finger-joint and polyurethane adhesive o bond hybrid eucalyptus, although more brittle than wood without seams, enable the use of shorter wood sections for the composition of major structural elements, optimizing better forest material.

RESUMO Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito do tratamento térmico nas madeiras de Corymbia citriodora e de Pinus taeda visando sua melhorar a resistência ao cupim xilofagos Nasutitermes corniger, por meio de ensaios de alimentação forçada. As temperaturas utilizadas nos tratamentos térmico das madeiras foram 160, 180, 200, 220 e 240 ºC. Para o Pinus taeda também foi empregada a temperatura de 260 ºC. Três pranchas de 6 × 16 × 56 cm (espessura × largura × comprimento) foram confeccionadas para avaliar os efeitos de cada temperatura investigada. Depois de tratadas, as pranchas forma transformadas em amostras de dimensões 2,54 × 2,54 × 0,64 centímetros (longitudinal ×radial × tangencial radial). O experimento foi mantidos numa sala climatizada (25 ± 2 ºC e 65 ± 5% de umidade relativa) durante 28 dias. Para a madeira de Corymbia citriodora, o tratamento térmico de 220 e 240 ºC aumentou a resistência ao ataque do cupim. Para as madeiras de Pinus taeda, a melhoria da resistência ocorreu a 240 e 260 ºC. A temperatura de 160 ºC provocou um decréscimo na resistência natural de ambas as espécies.

ABSTRACT This research aimed to evaluate the effect of the thermal-treated temperature to improvement of Corymbia citriodora and Pinus taeda wood resistance to the xylophagous termite Nasutitermes corniger, into forced feeding assay. The wood thermally treated was performed at temperatures of 160, 180, 200, 220, 240ºC. For Pinus taeda, the temperature of 260ºC was also used. Three boards of 6 × 16 × 56 cm (thickness × width x length) were used for each temperature. After being thermally treated, the boards were transformed into samples of 2.54 × 2.54 × 0.64 cm (longitudinal × radial × tangential). The experiment was kept in a climatized room (25 ± 2ºC and 65 ± 5% of relative humidity), for 28 days. For Corymbia citriodora, the thermal treatment at 220 and 240ºC improved the resistance to the termite. For Pinus taeda, the resistance improvement occurred at 240 and 260ºC. The temperature of 160ºC caused a decrease in the natural durability of both species.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of thermal treatment on the resistance of Corymbia citriodora and Pinus taeda woods to the xylophagous termite Nasutitermes corniger, in a food preference test. We used temperatures of 100 °C (control), 160 °C, 180 °C, 200 °C, 220 °C, 240 °C for both wood species, and 260 °C only for Pinus taeda. Three wood planks measuring 6 cm x 16 cm x 56 cm (thickness x width x length) were thermally treated and manufactured in specimens of 10.0 cm x 2.54 cm x 0.64 cm (longitudinal x radial x tangential). Specimens were distributed in randomized blocks, with six treatments (Corymbia citriodora) and seven treatments (Pinus taeda) with 10 repetitions in a 250 liters box with 10 cm of sand; specimens were inserted in the sand, up to 1/3 of their height. The test was maintained for 45 days under laboratory conditions (25 °C ± 2 °C and 65% ± 5% relative humidity). Temperatures of 220 °C and 240 °C slightly improved the resistance of Corymbia citriodora wood to the termite. Improvements on Pinus taeda wood happened at temperatures of 240 °C and 260 °C. The temperatures of 160 °C for the eucalyptus wood and 200 °C for pinus decreased their resistance to the tested termite.

El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar el efecto del proceso de modificación térmica en la resistencia de las maderas Corymbia citriodora y Pinus taeda a ser ingerida por la termita xilófaga Nasutitermes corniger, en ensayos de preferencia de alimento. Se probaron temperaturas de 100 °C (testigo), 160 °C, 180 °C, 200 °C, 220 °C, 240 °C, además de 260 °C para el Pinus taeda. Se sometieron al proceso de modificación térmica tres tablones de madera de 6 cm x 16 cm x 56 cm (grosor x ancho x largo), y después fueron transformados en especímenes de 10,0 cm x 2,54 cm x 0,64 cm (longitudinal x radial x tangencial). Los especímenes fueron distribuidos en bloques aleatorios, y sometidos a seis tratamientos (Corymbia citriodora) y siete tratamientos (Pinus taeda) con 10 repeticiones por tratamiento, en cajas de 250 litros con una cama de 10 cm de arena. Los especímenes de prueba se hincaron en la arena hasta 1/3 de su longitud y fueron expuestos al ataque de las termitas. El ensayo fue mantenido durante 45 días bajo condiciones del laboratorio (25 ºC ± 2 ºC y 65 % ± 5% de humedad relativa). Para la madera de Corymbia citriodora, las temperaturas de 220 °C y 240 °C mejoraron sensiblemente la resistencia a la termita. Para el Pinus taeda la mejoría ocurrió con las temperaturas de 240 °C y 260 °C. La temperatura de 160 °C para la madera de C. citriodora y la de 200 °C para el P. taeda causaron disminución en la resistencia a la termita estudiada.

A Madeira Laminada Colada (MLC) apresenta uma grande gama de aplicações. No Brasil, o seu emprego na forma de cruzetas para postes de rede aérea de distribuição de energia elétrica tem despertado a atenção de companhias do ramo, motivadas pelo potencial de emprego deste material. Dentre os fatores que influenciam o desempenho mecânico de soluções em MLC destacam-se a eficiência e a afinidade dos adesivos para com as espécies de madeiras utilizadas, o tipo de tratamento e o teor de umidade das lâminas de madeira, motivando o desenvolvimento de novas pesquisas nesta temática. Este trabalho objetivou investigar, via Método de Planejamento Fatorial de Experimentos (DOE), a influência dos fatores tipo de madeira (pinus; teca; eucalipto), adesivo (Purbond; Cascophen) e tratamento (CCA; CCB; CCBS) nas variáveis respostas resistência ao cisalhamento e à delaminação, consistindo nos mesmos fatores e combinação avaliados no projeto de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento da ANEEL/EESC-PD220-07: Cabeça de Série da Cruzeta de MLC. Os resultados da análise estatística revelaram que o fator tipo de madeira expressou efeito significativo para ambas as variáveis respostas avaliadas, o mesmo não ocorrendo com os fatores tipo de adesivo e de tratamento. Já o teor de umidade mostrou ser significativo em todas as espécies de madeira quando analisada a resistência ao cisalhamento, apresentando a madeira de teca a maior resistência ao cisalhamento e à delaminação.

The Glued Laminated Wood has a large range of applications. In Brazil, its employment as cross-piece poles for overhead electrical power has attracted the attention of companies in the industry, motivated by the potential use of this material. Among the factors that influence the mechanical performance of Glulam solutions stand out efficiency and affinity of the adhesives to the species of wood used, the type of treatment and moisture content of wood veneer, motivating the development of new research on this topic. This research aimed to investigate, by Design of Experiments (DOE), the influence of wood (pinus, teca, eucalipto), adhesive (Purbond; Cascophen) and treatment (CCA, CCB, CCBS ) in the variable responses shear strength and delamination, consisting in the same combination factors evaluated in ANEEL/EESC-PD220-07 project: Head Crosshead Glulam Series. The results of the statistical analysis showed that the species factor expressed significant effect for both response variables evaluated, did not occur with adhesive and treatment factors. Moisture content was significant in the wood evaluated when analyzed the shear strength, and the teca wood showed the highest shear strength and also relating to the delamination.

A norma brasileira NBR 7190 (ABNT, 1997) estabelece as diretrizes para a determinação da resistência da madeira ao embutimento com pinos metálicos por meio de ensaios laboratoriais ou, na ausência deles, disponibiliza equações que permitem estimar a resistência da madeira ao embutimento. A referida norma admite ainda que na direção paralela às fibras da madeira a resistência à compressão seja igual à resistência ao embutimento. O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu em analisar as resistências de embutimento e de compressão, ambos na direção paralela às fibras, utilizando madeiras das espécies pínus oocarpa (Pinus oocarpa Shiede), cumaru (Dipterix odorata) e pínus taeda (Pinus taeda L.). Para comparação das resistências foi utilizado o teste estatístico de hipótese conhecido como Teste T. Os resultados da análise estatística revelaram a não equivalência entre os valores de resistência apenas para as madeiras de Pinus oocarpa, evidenciando, assim, a importância da determinação da resistência da madeira ao embutimento através de ensaios laboratoriais normalizados.

The Brazilian standard NBR 7190-1997 provides guidelines for embedment strength determination on timber structures for metal dowels fastenings using laboratory tests or, in their absence, prescribes procedures to estimate the embedment strength. This standard assumes that the embedment strength parallel to the grain can be considered to be equivalent to the compressive strength parallel to the grain. The aim of this research work is to analyse the embedment strength parallel to grain and the compression strength parallel to grain for Pinus oocarpa (Pinus oocarpa Shiede), cumaru (Dipterix odorata) and pínus taeda (Pinus taeda L.) wood species. For comparing the strengths, the hypothesis the statistical T test was used. The results indicated that there is no equivalence between the strength values only for the pínus oocarpa wood specie, showing the importance of determining the embedding strength through standard laboratory tests.

Para dimensionar ligações entre membros estruturais de madeira com pinos metálicos (pregos ou parafusos), dois fenômenos devem ser levados em consideração: a flexão do pino metálico e a resistência da madeira ao embutimento. A norma brasileira ABNT NBR 7190:1997 preconiza a metodologia empregada em ensaios laboratoriais para determinação da resistência da madeira ao embutimento com pino metálico e, na ausência dos ensaios, especifica relações para estimar a resistência da madeira ao embutimento a partir da resistência na compressão. O objetivo desta pesquisa consistiu na comparação entre valores de resistência ao embutimento da madeira determinados experimentalmente e calculados utilizando parâmetros recomendados pela ABNT NBR 7190:1997. Pelos resultados dos testes de hipótese, pode-se concluir que a estimativa da resistência ao embutimento paralelo às fibras proposta pela ABNT NBR 7190:1997, que estabelece equivalência com os resultados de compressão na mesma direção, mostrou-se precisa para as madeiras de Pinus taeda L.. Entretanto, o mesmo não foi observado na direção normal em relação às fibras, possivelmente explicada pelo valor do coeficiente áe presente na equação para o cálculo de fe90.

To design connections between timber parts with metal dowels (nails or bolts), two phenomena must be considered: bending of the metal dowel and the embedment strength in the wood. The Brazilian Standard ABNT NBR 7190:1997 proposes the methods used in the laboratory tests to determine the embedment strength with the metal dowell and, in the absence of testing, specifies relations to calculate the embedment strength from the compression strength. The aim of this research was to compare the embedment strength values obtained by experimental tests and calculated by the relationships established by the Brazilian Standard ABNT NBR 7190:1997. By the results of the hypothesis tests, it was possible to conclude that the estimate of the embedment strength parallel to the grain proposed by the Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 7190:1997, establishing equivalence with the strength compression results in the same direction, must be effective to the wood species Pinus taeda L., however, the same was not found in the perpendicular direction with respect to the grain, possibly explained by the áe values in the equation to calculed fe90.

O conhecimento do comportamento da madeira mediante ações de curta duração contribui para um projeto estrutural mais seguro, entretanto não sendo a tenacidade parte integrante das propriedades mecânicas comumente investigadas na caracterização deste material. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar, com o uso de modelos de regressões polinomial linear, quadrática e cúbica, a possibilidade da estimativa da tenacidade com o conhecimento da densidade aparente de seis espécies de madeira (Angico, Eucalipto, Jatobá, Paricá, Pinus e Teca). Os resultados dos modelos de regressão evidenciaram a significância e representatividade de todos os ajustes investigados, consistindo o polinomial cúbico o mais eficiente na estimativa da tenacidade da madeira.

The knowledge on the behavior of wood in situations of short load contributes to the development of a safer structural design. However, toughness is not part of the mechanical properties commonly investigated in the characterization of this material. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate, the possibility to estimate the toughness with the knowledge of the apparent density of 6 Brazilian tropical wooden species (Angico, Eucalyptus, Jatobá, Paricá, Pine and Teak), by using linear, quadratic and cubic polynomial regression models. The results highlighted the significance and representation of all adjustments investigated, and the cubic polynomial was the most efficient for estimating the wood toughness.
