ABSTRACT The expression ‘you need to know to conserve’ is a well-known cliche among biologists. Documenting the richness of a group of organisms is the first step towards understanding biodiversity and preparing efficient conservation plans. In this context, many efforts have been made to quantify the number of species on Earth and estimate the number of species still unknown to science. A few countries have complete and integrated databases estimating the approximate number of species recorded for their territory, particularly in the Global South. In Brazil, a country of continental dimensions, revealing the richness of the second most diverse clade of invertebrates (=Mollusca) has been a goal of taxonomists. Recently, in an unprecedented, collective, and integrated effort among Brazilian malacologists, it was possible to estimate how many valid species of molluscs are there in Brazil. In this effort, more than 30 mollusc experts joined together to update the Taxonomic Catalogue of the Brazilian Fauna (TCBF), a governmental website that allows a quick and real-time updating of all Metazoan. So far, more than 5,000 updates have been made in TCBF, indicating the presence of 3,552 valid species of molluscs in Brazil, distributed among the main clades as follows: Caudofoveata (10 spp.), Solenogastres (6 spp.), Polyplacophora (35 spp.), Scaphopoda (43 spp.), Cephalopoda (92 spp.), Bivalvia (629 spp.) and Gastropoda (2,737 spp.). The present study, in addition to demonstrating for the first time the richness of Brazilian molluscs, also presents the state of the art of this important phylum of invertebrates highlighting its most representative and neglected groups.

BACKGROUND Key genes control the infectivity of the Schistosoma haematobium causing schistosomiasis. A method for understanding the regulation of these genes might help in developing new disease strategies to control schistosomiasis, such as the silencing mediated by microRNAs (miRNAs). The miRNAs have been studied in schistosome species and they play important roles in the post-transcriptional regulation of genes, and in parasite-host interactions. However, genome-wide identification and characterisation of novel miRNAs and their pathway genes and their gene expression have not been explored deeply in the genome and transcriptome of S. haematobium. OBJECTIVES Identify and characterise mature and precursor miRNAs and their pathway genes in the S. haematobium genome. METHODS Computational prediction and characterisation of miRNAs and genes involved in miRNA pathway from S. haematobium genome on SchistoDB. Conserved domain analysis was performed using PFAM and CDD databases. A robust algorithm was applied to identify mature miRNAs and their precursors. The characterisation of the precursor miRNAs was performed using RNAfold, RNAalifold and Perl scripts. FINDINGS We identified and characterised 14 putative proteins involved in miRNA pathway including ARGONAUTE and DICER in S. haematobium. Besides that, 149 mature miRNAs and 131 precursor miRNAs were identified in the genome including novel miRNAs. MAIN CONCLUSIONS miRNA pathway occurs in the S. haematobium, including endogenous miRNAs and miRNA pathway components, suggesting a role of this type of non-coding RNAs in gene regulation in the parasite. The results found in this work will open up a new avenue for studying miRNAs in the S. haematobium biology in helping to understand the mechanism of gene silencing in the human parasite Schistosome.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The performance of seven tomato genotypes was evaluated under protected cultivation in an experiment conducted in the North Fluminense region, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, from May to September 2001. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with seven treatments (five hybrids: Bonus, Cronos, Erika, Pegasus, Vitara and two cultivars: Santa Clara and Santa Cruz), with four replications. Vitara hybrid produced fruits with highest number of locules (5,25), length (53,67), diameter (69,75 mm) and average weight (147,35 g).

Two experiments were conducted at the Campos Experiment Station - Pesagro-Rio, during the winter season of 1995 and 1996, to evaluate the performance of carrot and lettuce in an intercropping system. For the first experiment the lettuce cultivars comprised Babá-de Verão, Regina-71, Vitória, Brasil-303 and Carolina, whilst for the second experiment comprised Carolina, Elisa, Regina-71, Vitória and Marisa. The carrot cultivar Brasília was used in both experiments. Lettuce cultivars were used in monoculture and in an intercropping with carrot. The experimental design comprised randomized blocks with four replications. For carrot, six treatments were analysed (monoculture and intercropping with five lettuce cultivars), and for lettuce, a factorial arrangement with two systems and five cultivars was used. Each experimental plot had the dimensions of 1 m x 1.5 m. The intercropping system efficiency was measured by the "Land Equivalent Ratio" (LER) technique. For both experiments and crops, in monoculture and intercropping system, productions were considered suitable for marketing. However, when carrot was intercropped with the lettuce cultivar Marisa there was a decrease observed in carrot root quality. The LER values of 1.74 and 1.76 provide evidence that this practice was advantageous in both experiments, that is, to harvest the equivalent production of lettuce or carrot in a monoculture system there would be a need to increase the planted area by 74% and 76%, considering two years of experimentation, respectively

From January to December 1998, ten patients with dissecting aneurysms of the Aorta (ADA Ao) were operated on, 4 type A and 6 type B. Males predominated and ages ranged from 34 to 78 years. In all of them aortoscopy was performed with deep hypothermia and circulatory arrest. A gastroscope was used with visualization of the aortic lumen and all patients had less than 15 days of disease. In type A group, there was re-entrance below the left subclavian artery in 2 patients and on the iliac bifurcation in the other 2. In the type B group, there was re-entrance at the renal arteries level in 2 patients and at the aorta bifurcation level of the iliac in 4 patients. The aortoscopy guided us in implanting an elephant trunk supplement in two patients in group type A. In the other 2, it guided us in the inversion of arterial line direction. It directed us in the correct elephant trunk placement in the type B group. In 4 patients we used the aortoscopy as a diagnostic complement. The time spent with the aortoscopy did not alter morbidity concluding that aortoscopy is a rapid diagnostic method with good definition of anatomic changes of the aorta, leading to an efficient treatment. In acute unstable cases we can dispense with some diagnostic scans that could delay surgery, once the re-entrance is on the end of the aortoscopy helps avoid retrograde dissection. We belive that aortoscopy can, in the future, be of great value in the diagnosis and treatment of A D A Ao, as well as in other aortic diseases.

Crossed immunoelectrophoresis (IEC) was used for detection of free and complexed circulating polisaccharide anodic antigen (AgCA) of Schistosoma mansoni in sera of infected hamsters. An attempt was also done to detect AgCA in human sera from patients infected with S. mansoni. The conditions for isolation and detection of complexed AgCA were established. The sensitivity of IEC was increased by incorporation of 2% polyethylene glicol (PEG) to the agarose and by maintaining the system at 4°C during the electrophoretic run. Free AgCA was detected in 12 and the complexed in 30 of the 37 hamsters sera analysed. Correlation between AgCA (free and complexed) and the parasite load was observed. AgCA was not detected, under the experimental conditions used, in human sera from 7 patients in the acute and 23 in the chronic phase of infection.
