ABSTRACT Purpose: To compare strip meniscometry and Schirmer tear test 1 results and tear film breakup time between dogs with normal eyes and dogs diagnosed with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Methods: One-hundred fifty-six eyes of 78 dogs, 88 normal eyes, and 68 eyes diagnosed with keratoconjunctivitis sicca were included in the study. The tests were performed in the following sequence: Schirmer tear test 1 was used to allocate the dogs to the normal or keratoconjunctivitis sicca group, followed by the strip meniscometry test and tear film breakup time measurement. Results: The results (mean ± standard deviation) of the tests in the normal group were as follows: Schirmer tear test 1, 22.75 ± 3.88 mm/min; strip meniscometry test, 10.01 ± 2.35 mm/5 sec; and tear film breakup time, 25.82 ± 5.47 sec. In the keratoconjunctivitis sicca group, the results were as follows: Schirmer tear test 1, 6.10 ± 4.44 mm/min; strip meniscometry test, 3.03 ± 2.62 mm/5 sec; and tear film breakup time, 10.78 ± 4.23 sec. The Spearman correlation coefficient in the keratoconjunctivitis sicca group was very high, with a significant difference between the strip meniscometry test and Schirmer tear test 1 (r=0.848, p<0.001), and moderate and significant between the strip meniscometry test and tear film breakup time (r=0.773, p<0.001). The cutoff for the strip meniscometry test for keratoconjunctivitis sicca was 7.0 mm/5 sec. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca was suspected when the values were <10 mm/5 sec. Conclusions: This study provided strip meniscometry test values from dogs with normal eyes and eyes with keratoconjunctivitis sicca, with high sensitivity and specificity compared with those of the Schirmer tear test 1. In the future, the strip meniscometry test may be another important quantitative test and could complement the gold standard Schirmer tear test for the diagnosis of keratoconjunctivitis sicca in dogs, an excellent animal model for the study of the disease.

O teste de correlação de Spearman no grupo ceratoconjuntivite seca foi muito alto, com diferença significativa entre teste de meniscometria em tira e teste lacrimal de Schirmer 1 (r=0,848, p<0,001), moderada e significativa entre teste de meniscometria em tira e tempo de ruptura do filme lacrimal (r=0,773, p<0,001). O cut-off para teste de meniscometria em tira para ceratoconjuntivite seca foi identificado em 7,0 mm / 5 seg, valores abaixo de 10 mm / 5 seg podem ser considerados suspeitos para KCS. Conclusões: Este estudo forneceu valores de teste de meniscometria em tira em olhos normais e com ceratoconjuntivite seca em cães, revelando alta sensibilidade e especificidade em comparação com o teste lacrimal de Schirmer 1. No futuro, o teste de meniscometria em tira pode ser outro teste quantitativo importante e pode complementar o teste lacrimal de Schirmer padrão ouro para o diagnóstico de ceratoconjuntivite seca em cães, um excelente modelo animal para o estudo de ceratoconjuntivite seca.

RESUMO Este artigo examina o efeito da heterogeneidade das coalizões de acionistas na distribuição de dividendos em empresas listadas no Brasil. Para análise da relação entre grandes acionistas e dividendos, é crucial considerar a maneira pela qual o controle é assegurado. Grandes acionistas podem compartilhar o controle formando coalizões, e diferenças na composição das coalizões podem alterar os incentivos que as partes cooperantes têm para a atividade de monitoramento. Com base nos acordos de acionistas, exploramos a heterogeneidade entre as coalizões de acionistas apresentando elementos que podem caracterizar o papel do controle compartilhado na governança corporativa das empresas em um ambiente de mercado descrito pela concentração do controle em um único grande acionista. Este estudo apresenta potenciais impactos econômicos e sociais, pois é de particular interesse dos acionistas outsiders, e até mesmo de potenciais investidores, saber como os insiders podem usar a política de dividendos, uma vez que a distribuição de lucros tende a mitigar problemas de agência. Para identificar as coalizões de acionistas recorremos aos acordos de acionistas. O modelo de análise foi estimado pelo system generalized method of moments (GMM-Sys) de dois estágios com dados em painel desbalanceado para o período de 2008 a 2019. Descobrimos que o número de acionistas na coalizão e a alavancagem dos direitos de voto do maior acionista da coalizão estão negativamente relacionados aos dividendos distribuídos, e que os direitos de voto da coalizão estão positivamente relacionados aos dividendos distribuídos. ABSTRACT This article examines the effect of the heterogeneity of shareholder coalitions on the distribution of dividends in companies listed in Brazil. To analyze the relationship between large shareholders and dividends, it is essential to consider the way the control is ensured. Large shareholders can share control by forming coalitions, and differences in the composition of coalitions can alter the incentives the cooperating parties have for the activity of monitoring. Based on shareholder agreements, we explore the heterogeneity among shareholder coalitions by presenting elements that can characterize the role of shared control in the corporate governance of companies in a market environment described by the concentration of control in a single large shareholder. This study presents potential economic and social impacts, as it is of particular interest to outsider shareholders, and even potential investors, to know how insiders can use dividend policy, since the distribution of profits tends to mitigate agency problems. To identify the shareholder coalitions we resorted to shareholder agreements. The analysis model was estimated using the two-stage system generalized method of moments (GMM-Sys) with unbalanced panel data for the period from 2008 to 2019. We discovered that the number of shareholders in the coalition and the leveraging of the voting rights of the biggest shareholder in the coalition are negatively related to the dividends distributed, and that the voting rights of the coalition are positively related to the dividends distributed. These results contribute to the principal-principal approach of agency theory and highlight that the incentives and capacity of shareholder coalitions to pursue private benefits of control depend on their own characteristics. RESUMO Este estudo examina a associação entre a divulgação voluntária de informações econômicas e financeiras e o gerenciamento dos resultados contábeis. Os argumentos delineados sobre o tema partem do pressuposto de que uma política de divulgação voluntária consistente pode coibir o gerenciamento de resultados. A análise é conduzida em uma amostra aleatória de 66 empresas brasileiras de capital aberto não financeiras no período de 2005 a 2012. Para medir a divulgação voluntária, usa-se o índice proposto por Consoni e Colauto (2016). Como proxy para gerenciamento de resultados, foram utilizados accruals discricionários (AD) estimados com base no modelo de Dechow, Sloan e Sweeney (1995). A relação entre essas variáveis é analisada usando-se o modelo de equações simultâneas e o método de regressão de dados em painel com efeitos aleatórios. Esperava-se, a priori, uma relação negativa e significativa; no entanto o resultado principal do estudo indica que a divulgação voluntária e o gerenciamento de resultados não são simultaneamente determinados ou associados. Embora os resultados obtidos contradigam alguns pressupostos teóricos, existem explicações alternativas para esse resultado. Primeiro, o conjunto de evidências empíricas nessa pesquisa, além daqueles de estudos anteriores, deve ser interpretado com cautela, já que não há consenso em relação às variáveis de divulgação voluntária e gerenciamento de resultados contábeis. Segundo, várias empresas no Brasil podem não ter interesse em fornecer uma divulgação voluntária de alta qualidade porque grande parte dos seus acionistas usufrui de benefícios privados de controle. Essa situação reduz a importância da potencial demanda de mercado por informação, estratifica a assimetria de informação e não impede o gerenciamento de resultados.

ABSTRACT This study examines the association between the voluntary disclosure of economic and financial information and earnings management. The outlined arguments on the subject are based on the assumption that consistent voluntary disclosure policies may reduce earnings management. The analysis is conducted on a random sample of 66 non-financial Brazilian listed companies in the 2005-2012 period. To measure voluntary disclosure, the index proposed by Consoni and Colauto (2016) is used. As a proxy for earnings management, discretionary accruals (DA) are estimated based on the model by Dechow, Sloan, and Sweeney (1995). The relationship between these measurements is analyzed using a model of simultaneous equations and by the random effects regression method with panel data. A significant negative relationship was expected a priori; however, the main result of the study indicates that voluntary disclosure and earnings management are not simultaneously determined or associated. Although the results obtained contradict certain theoretical assumptions, there are alternative explanations for this finding. The empirical set of evidence in this research, in addition to those in previous studies, should be interpreted with caution because there is no consensus on the measures for voluntary disclosure and earnings management. Second, several companies in Brazil may not be interested in providing high-quality voluntary disclosure because most of their shareholders enjoy private benefits of control. This issue reduces the importance of the potential market demand for information, stratifies information asymmetry, and does not prevent earnings management.

Resumo Objetivo: Verificar a influência do processo de convergência às Normas Internacionais de Contabilidade na divulgação voluntária de empresas brasileiras listadas na BM&FBovespa. Metodologia: Foi concebida uma métrica de divulgação voluntária, sendo coletadas as informações em uma amostra aleatória de 66 empresas com registro ativo na BM&FBovespa durante o período de 2005 a 2012. Para o teste de hipótese utilizou-se regressão com dados em painel de efeitos aleatórios. Resultados: A convergência às Normas Internacionais de Contabilidade apresenta-se como um fator exógeno que afetou positiva e significativamente a divulgação voluntária no período analisado. Essa constatação está em linha com o racional de complementariedade entre a divulgação obrigatória e a divulgação voluntária. Contribuições: O estudo apresenta uma nova métrica para mensuração do nível de divulgação voluntária, com potencial de compreender a natureza da relação entre ela e a divulgação obrigatória. No contexto do mercado de capitais brasileiro, regido pelo modelo stakeholder, o processo de convergência às Normas Internacionais de Contabilidade induziu um aumento da qualidade da informação voluntária.

Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to verify the influence of the convergence process to International Financial Reporting Standards on the voluntary disclosure of listed Brazilian companies. Design/methodology/approach: A voluntary disclosure metric was designed and collected from a random sample of 66 companies registered as active in BM&FBovespa during the 2005-2012 period. For the hypothesis test it was used panel data regressions with random effects. Findings: The convergence process to International Financial Reporting Standards is presented as an exogenous factor that affected positively and significantly voluntary disclosure in the analyzed period. It leads to the complementary rationale between mandatory disclosure and the voluntary disclosure. Originality/value: The study presents a new metric for measuring the voluntary disclosure level, with the potential to understand the nature of the relationship between this and the mandatory disclosure. In the Brazilian capital market context, governed by the stakeholder model, convergence to International Financial Reporting Standards induced an increase on voluntary disclosure quality.
