Abstract It is repeatedly stressed the need to characterize the extant biodiversity in tropical ecosystems. However, inventory studies are still progressing slowly in dry ecosystems, leading to the underestimation of their true biodiversity and hindering conservation efforts. In this study, we present primary and secondary data, along with an updated list of amphibians and reptiles from two localities in the São Francisco-Gurguéia region in Piauí. Additionally, we compare the species composition between nine areas within the Caatinga, which were sampled using standardized methods over the past ten years, to examine broader spatial patterns of community composition. To survey reptiles and amphibians, we employed similar methods and sampling efforts in two areas within the Serra das Confusões National Park (SCNP) region. Our surveys recorded a total of 73 species of amphibians and reptiles, of which 24 are new distribution records for the SCNP region. Consequently, our findings increase the known herpetofauna in the region to 94 species. Despite their proximity, the two sites in the SCNP region exhibited only 42% similarity in species composition, and they differed significantly from other areas within the Caatinga. Furthermore, even the closer Caatinga areas presented differences in species composition, highlighting the necessity to evaluate biodiversity across the landscape and contribute to understanding biogeographic patterns.

Resumo É repetidamente enfatizada a necessidade de caracterizar a biodiversidade vivente em ecossistemas tropicais. No entanto, os estudos de inventário ainda estão progredindo lentamente em ecossistemas secos, levando à subestimação de sua verdadeira biodiversidade e dificultando os esforços de conservação. Neste estudo, apresentamos dados primários e secundários, juntamente com uma lista atualizada de anfíbios e répteis de duas localidades na região de São Francisco-Gurguéia, do Piauí. Além disso, comparamos a composição de espécies entre nove áreas dentro da Caatinga, que foram amostradas usando métodos padronizados nos últimos dez anos, para examinar padrões espaciais mais amplos de composição da comunidade. Para estudar répteis e anfíbios, utilizamos métodos e esforços de amostragem semelhantes em duas áreas na região do Parque Nacional da Serra das Confusões (PNSC). Nossos levantamentos registraram um total de 73 espécies de anfíbios e répteis, das quais 24 são novos registros de distribuição para a região do PNSC. Consequentemente, nossos resultados aumentam a herpetofauna conhecida na região para 94 espécies. Apesar da proximidade, os dois locais na região do PNSC exibiram apenas 42% de similaridade na composição de espécies e diferiram significativamente de outras áreas dentro da Caatinga. Mesmo áreas mais próximas da Caatinga apresentaram diferenças na composição de espécies, destacando a necessidade de avaliar a biodiversidade em toda a paisagem e contribuir para a compreensão de padrões biogeográficos.

Resumen El presente trabajotiene como objetivo estudiar la simulación de la percolación eléctrica de nanotubos de carbono (CNT) en matriz de polimetilmetacrilato (PMMA). Para ello, se utilizaron simulaciones en análisis bidimensionales y tridimensionales a través de un programa desarrollado utilizando el método Monte Carlo, apoyado en el modelo de volumen excluido para analizar la tortuosidad geométrica en la matriz polimérica. El umbral de percolación se analizó mediante diferentes relaciones de aspecto, fracciones volumétricas y geometrías de carga conductiva. En las simulaciones, se observó una disminución en el umbral de percolación cuando aumentaba la relación de aspecto y las partículas se volvían más tortuosas, siendo estas características los parámetros para evaluar sistemas tanto bidimensionales como tridimensionales. Los resultados muestran valores de umbral de percolación de 0.625% vol y relación de aspecto de 1000 para análisisbidimensionales y 0.08% vol y relación de aspecto de 250 para análisis tridimensionales, siendo la adecuación a los principales modelos de percolación eléctrica conefecto de tortuosidadlosnanoaditivospropuestos por la literatura.

Abstract The present work aims to study the simulation of the electrical percolation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in polymethylmethacrylate matrix (PMMA). In order to do this, simulations were employed in two-dimensional and three-dimensional analyses through a program developed by the Monte Carlo method, supported by the excluded volume model in order to analyze the geometric tortuosity in the polymeric matrix. The percolation threshold was analyzed by different aspect ratios, volumetric fractions and conductive load geometries. In the simulations, a decrease in the percolation threshold was observed when the aspect ratio increased and the particles became more tortuous, being these characteristics the parameters to evaluate both two-dimensional and three-dimensional systems. The results show percolation threshold values of 0.625% vol and aspect ratio of 1000 for two-dimensional analyses and, 0.08% vol and aspect ratio of 250 for three-dimensional analyses, being the adequacy to the main models for electrical percolation with tortuosity effect of the nanocarriers proposed by literature.

Considering the promising antitumor effects of compounds with dual anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative activities, thus benzophenones analogs (2-7) were evaluated on in vivo anti-inflammatory assay and molecular docking analysis. Those with the best molecular docking results were in vitro evaluated on cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes and tested regarding antiproliferative activity. All derivatives displayed in vivo anti-inflammatory activity. Among them, the substances 2’-hydroxy-4’-benzoylphenyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (4), 4-hydroxy-4’-methoxybenzophenone (5) and 4’-(4’’-methoxybenzoyl)phenyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (7) showed the best values of Glide Score in COX-2 docking evaluation and 4 and 5 selectively inhibited COX-2 and COX-1 in vitro enzymatic assay, respectively. Thus, 4 and 5 were tested against breast cancer (MCF-7, MDA MB-231, Hs578T) and non-small-cell-lung cancer (A549) cell lines. The estrogen-positive MCF-7 cell line was more responsive compared to other tested cell lines. They induced cell cycle arrest at G1/S transition in MCF-7 cell line once there was an increase in G0/G1 population with concomitant reduction of S population. The antiproliferative activity of these substances on MCF-7 was associated with their ability to inhibit cyclin E expression, a critical regulator of G1/S transition. Taken together, the data indicate that 4 and 5 have dual anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative activities and support further studies to evaluate their antitumor potential.

RESUMO O teste de condutividade elétrica destaca-se por gerar respostas rápidas para diferenciação de lotes, no entanto, necessita-se de estudos visando o aprimoramento desta prática em sementes de cártamo. Objetivou-se verificar a eficiência e estabelecer metodologia do teste de condutividade elétrica para sementes de cártamo. Inicialmente, 12 lotes foram caracterizados quanto às propriedades físicas e potencial fisiológico. Para condutividade elétrica, o experimento foi efetuado em três etapas com os 12 lotes: primeiro determinou-se o período de embebição (2, 4, 6, 8, e 16 horas), em seguida avaliou-se o volume (50, 75, 100, 150 e 200 mL) e por fim determinou-se a quantidade de sementes (25 e 50). O teste de condutividade elétrica utilizando 25 sementes embebidas em 50 mL de água destilada no período de seis horas possibilita a diferenciação de lotes de sementes de cártamo. A análise multivariada dos componentes principais é eficiente na discriminação do vigor de lotes de sementes de cártamo.

ABSTRACT The electrical conductivity test stands out for generating quick responses for lot differentiation; however, studies are needed to improve this practice in safflower seeds. This study aimed to verify the efficiency and establish a methodology of the electrical conductivity test for safflower seeds. Initially, 12 lots were characterized regarding physical properties and physiological potential. For electrical conductivity, the experiment was carried out in three stages with the 12 lots: firstly, the soaking period was determined (2, 4, 6, 8, and 16 hours), then the volume was evaluated (50, 75, 100, 150, and 200 mL), and finally the number of seeds (25 and 50 seeds) was determined. The electrical conductivity test using 25 seeds in 50 mL of distilled water for six hours of soaking enables the differentiation of safflower seed lots. Multivariate analysis of principal components is efficient in discriminating the vigor of safflower seed lots.

Azure A (AZA) and azure B (AZB) phenothiazine dyes are used for clinical and medical purposes, and their functions can be altered via interactions with proteins. However, no kinetics information on the interactions between phenothiazine dyes and bovine serum albumin (BSA) is available. Surface plasmon resonance was used to determine the energetic and dynamic of the BSA-AZA and BSA-AZB complexes formation at pH 7.4. At temperature ≤ 16 °C, the formation of activated (DH‡a,12°C,AZA= -310.57 kJ mol-1 and DH‡a,12 °C,AZB= -256.37 kJ mol-1) and thermodynamically stable (DH°12°C,AZA= -314.56 kJ mol-1 and DH°12°C,AZB= -265.73 kJ mol-1) complexes was driven by enthalpy, while at temperature ≥ 20 °C, by entropy, (TDS‡a,28°C,AZA= 207.49 and TDS‡a,28°C,AZB= 190.69; TDS°28°C,AZA= 277.50 and TDS°28°C,AZB= 257.26 kJ mol-1). Hydrophobic interactions were fundamental to the complex stability and the increase in number of -CH3 groups in the dyes do not affect kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. Our results could help optimize the medical and pharmaceutical applications of phenothiazine dyes.

RESUMEN El crecimiento acelerado de las ciudades latinoamericanas en la actualidad ha traído consigo patrones insostenibles de urbanización, que tienden a confrontar una realidad fragmentaria con relación a dinámicas esenciales en la composición del paisaje urbano -biofísicas, urbanas y socioculturales-. Esto se observa en ciudades intermedias (CIMES) latinoamericanas, sobre todo con relación a modelos de crecimiento urbano extensivo y poco controlados. Se observa también la falta de una visión holística sobre ellas, la existencia de espacios libres de ocupación urbana de grandes dimensiones, esperando una posible próxima ocupación, y la no consideración de estas como sistemas. Esos hechos demuestran la urgencia de pensar alternativas para el planeamiento urbano de esas ciudades. Frente a estos desafíos, el artículo busca: 1) profundizar en el abordaje de principios, estrategias y directrices de acción para la Ordenación Sistémica del Paisaje (OSP), relativa a los sistemas biofísico, sociocultural y urbano, a partir de un sistema de espacios libres como reestructurador de la futura ocupación urbana, y 2) apuntar desafíos y oportunidades para la aplicación práctica de tales principios, estrategias y directrices de acción en el planeamiento de CIMES latinoamericanas, como alternativas para la concepción de un planteamiento urbano renovado.

ABSTRACT The rapid growth of current Latin American cities brings unsustainable patterns of urbanization, which tend to shape a fragmentary reality in relation to essential dynamics of the urban landscape -biophysical, urban, and socio-cultural. A phenomenon is observed in Latin American intermediate cities (CIMES), especially with attention to extensive and poorly controlled urban growth models. There is also a lack of a holistic view over these cities, the existence of large open spaces, expecting to be built upon, and the non-consideration of the cities as systems. These facts demonstrate the urgency of thinking about alternatives for urban planning in these cities. Faced with these challenges, the article seeks to 1) deepen the approach of principles, strategies, and guidelines for the Systemic Landscape Planning (sysLP), related to the biophysical, socio-cultural, and urban systems, based on an open space system as a restructuring element of future built-up spaces, and 2) point out challenges and opportunities for the practical application of such principles, strategies, and guidelines in Latin American CIMES planning, as alternatives for the conception of a renewed urban planning.

Aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) have proven to be efficient and environmentally safe methods for extracting chemical species. However, the driving forces behind the partition of solutes in these systems are still little understood. A complete thermodynamic partitioning of phenothiazine dyes was investigated in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) + salt + water ATPSs. Standard transfer parameters (Gibbs free energy change (ΔtrGº), enthalpy change (ΔtrHº) and entropy change (TΔtrSº)) were evaluated, and their dependence on the dye structure, electrolyte nature and tie line length (TLL). All phenothiazine dyes are concentrated predominantly in the polymer enriched phase, with ΔtrGº values ranging from -4.1 up to -13.4 kJ mol-1. Due to the dye-PEO attractive interactions that occur mainly via benzene condensed ring present in the structures of phenothiazine dyes, the partitioning of these dyes was enthalpically driven, with -11.4 ≥ ΔtrHº ≥ -52 kJ mol-1 and -4.93 ≥ TΔtrSº ≥ -38 kJ mol-1.

RESUMO Objetivou-se, com este estudo, avaliar a uniformidade de distribuição em unidades gotejadoras aplicando diluições de água tratada produzida pela exploração do petróleo. O experimento foi montado no delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema de parcelas sub-subdivididas, com três repetições; tendo nas parcelas os tratamentos P0 - 100% de água subterrânea, controle; P10 - 90% de água subterrânea e 10% de água produzida; P20 - 80% de água subterrânea e 20% de água produzida; P30 - 70% de água subterrânea e 30% de água produzida; e P40 - 60% de água subterrânea e 40% de água produzida; nas subparcelas os tipos de gotejadores não autocompensantes (D1 - 1,6 L h-1, Netafim Super Typhoon, D2 - 1,6 L h-1, Netafim Streamline e D3 - 1,7 L h-1, NaanDanJain TalDrip) e nas subsubparcelas os tempos de avaliação (0, 40, 80, 120 e 160 h). Foram avaliados os coeficientes de uniformidade de distribuição e de uniformidade estatístico a cada 40 h, até completar 160 h. O pH das diluições foi o atributo que representou maior risco de obstrução aos emissores. Ainda em relação às diluições, P40 ocasionou maior desuniformidade de aplicação em D2, enquanto, os maiores valores de uniformidade de aplicação foram alcançados nos tratamentos P10 e P20 em D1 e D3, indicando eficácia da diluição na minimização da obstrução.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the uniformity of distribution in drip units applying dilutions of treated water produced by oil exploration. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design in a split-split-plot scheme, with three replicates. The plots were composed of the treatments P0 - 100% groundwater, control; P10 - 90% groundwater and 10% produced water; P20 - 80% groundwater and 20% produced water; P30 - 70% groundwater and 30% produced water; and P40 - 60% groundwater and 40% produced water; the subplots had the types of non-pressure compensating drippers (D1 - 1.6 L h-1, Netafim Super Typhoon, D2 - 1.6 L h-1, Netafim Streamline and D3 - 1.7 L h-1, NaanDanJain TalDrip); and the sub-subplots contained the evaluation times (0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 h). Distribution uniformity and statistical uniformity coefficients were evaluated every 40 h, until completing 160 h. The pH of the dilutions was the attribute posing the highest risk of clogging to the emitters. Also in relation to dilutions, P40 caused greater application non-uniformity in D2, while the highest values of application uniformity were achieved in treatments P10 and P20 with D1 and D3, indicating the effectiveness of dilution in minimizing clogging.

Abstract Submerged Membranes Bioreactors (SMBR) are an established technology for wastewater treatment for water recovery and reuse. However, its routine application is still compromised by the high energy consumption to overcome the fouling effect. This study evaluated the effect of aluminum sulfate and cationic polymer in the orthophosphate removal and sludge filterability improvement in the mixed liquor of a SMBR pilot system. Parameters such as coagulant concentration, filtration time, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) reduction and orthophosphate removal were evaluated by using a jar-test and a stirred cell. As results, aluminum sulfate and polymer additions improved the filtration index (FI30) from 25% to 32 %, for both chemicals. Time-to-filter (TTF) results evidenced a positive and significant correlation between aluminum sulfate dosage and colloidal EPS reduction.

We describe the microwave-assisted synthesis of thirteen functionalized peptoids and evaluate their in vitro antileishmanial activity against forms of Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis promastigotes. Synthesis via the Ugi four-component reaction (Ugi 4CR) reaction furnished the compounds of interest in 55-80% yield; reactions were conducted in a microwave reactor and lasted only 10 min. We then screened the antileishmanial activity of the synthesized compounds in vitro. To determine the IC50 (inhibitory concentration necessary to inhibit the growth of 50% of parasites) values, we selected the compounds that inhibited L. (L.) amazonensis growth by more than 50%. The seven selected compounds displayed IC50 values ranging from 2.6 to 72 µM after incubation for 48 h. Three peptoids gave IC50 values between 2.6 and 7.9 µM and can be considered as bioreactive molecules (hit criteria).

RESUMO Hibiscus sabdariffaé uma espécie pantropicalmente distribuída e cultivada devido à sua importância econômica. Possivelmente esta espécie é originária do Sudão, tendo sido, posteriormente, levada para o restante da África, sudeste da Ásia e América Central. Registros da naturalização de H. sabdariffa são conhecidos para a região neotropical, embora no Brasil, ela seja conhecida apenas como cultivada. Apresentamos aqui, casos de naturalização de H. sabdariffa para a flora brasileira baseados em registros prévios e novas coletas realizadas na região Amazônica. Incluem-se, ainda, uma descrição da espécie, chave de identificação para as espécies Amazônicas de Hibiscus, prancha fotográfica e a distribuição geográfica da espécie na região neotropical.

ABSTRACT Hibiscus sabdariffa is a pantropical species cultivated because of its economic importance. This species possibly originated in Sudan and was later taken to the rest of Africa, Southeast Asia, and Central America. Naturalization records of H. sabdariffa are known for the Neotropical region, although in Brazil it is only known as a cultivated species. We present here cases of naturalization of H. sabdariffa in the Brazilian flora, based on previous records and new collections made in the Amazon region. It is also included a description of the species, an identification key for the Hibiscus species from Amazon, a photographic plate and the geographic distribution of the species in the neotropics.

ABSTRACT The plant water potential and the leaf temperature are physiological responses of the coffee tree that can be used as indicative of the irrigation management of this crop. There is a dependence between the leaf water potential with the potential matrix of the soil solution, however, the water potential levels found for the coffee tree show divergent relationships in the literature regarding the matrix potential. The objective of this study is to verify the water potential and leaf surface temperature in the coffee tree when submitted to different irrigation levels. The study was conducted in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, using Coffea arabica species from Red Catuaí IAC 144 variety, the drip irrigation system was adopted and the management done by tensiometry. The relationships among these physiological responses and the treatments of actions presented high determination coefficients (R2 of 0.84, 0.90 and 0.65 for the leaf water potential, leaf temperature measured with the portable infrared sensor and the thermal camera respectively). The estimated values for leaf water potential were −0.23, −0.56, −0.89 and −1.22 MPa for irrigation treatments L130%, L100%, L70% and L40%, respectively. The calculated leaf temperature values were 31.7, 32.4, 33.0 and 33.7°C in average, for treatments L130%, L100%, L70% and L40% in proper order.

ABSTRACT Lippia origanoides is a honey shrub which has showed hypotensive potential assessed by in vivo studies. The aim of this work is the development of a pharmaceutical formulation composed by an optimized extract obtained from aerial parts of L. origanoides. The quantification of the naringenin marker in the dry extract and tablets developed was performed, as well as the assessment of the oral acute toxicity in rats. The hydroalcoholic extract of L. origanoides was spray-dried with the addition of colloidal silicon dioxide (Lo-HAE/CSD), and then applied in the preparation of eight different lots of tablets. The influence of the diluent (cellulose or babassu mesocarp), the presence of binder, and the percentage of lubricant, as well as organoleptic and physicochemical characteristics were screened. For the quantification of the marker content both in Lo-HAE/CSD and in the tablets, an analytical curve of the naringenin standard was fitted, and the samples were then analyzed in UFLC. The toxicological assessment was performed in female Wistar rats according to the Acute Toxic Class Method from OECD. The developed tablets produced meet acceptable macroscopic characteristics, and the presence of babassu as diluent provided improved physicochemical properties. The best content of Lo-HAE/CSD in the tablet (100.27%) was identified for the lot containing babassu, composed by 1.0% magnesium stearate, without PVP binder in its formulation. Moreover, Lo-HAE/CSD showed no signs of toxicity. Therefore, the babassu mesocarp powder is a promising pharmaceutical excipient for the development of herbal tablets containing the Lippia origanoides extract.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever os primeiros relatos de atividade de térmitas em ossos humanos não fossilizados, no Brasil. Os casos relatados neste estudo resultaram da análise pericial de seis esqueletos humanos encontrados no Nordeste do Brasil, entre os anos de 2012 e 2014. Vestígios de túneis e ninhos comumente produzidos por cupins foram encontrados em várias superfícies dos ossos humanos, bem como a presença de espécimes e característicos sinais de atividade osteofágica. Em quatro casos, foram identificadas as espécies: Amitermes amifer Silvestri, 1901, Nasutitermes corniger (Motschulsky, 1855) – em duas ossadas, e Microcerotermes indistinctus Mathews, 1977. Em dois outros casos, a atividade de cupins sobre superfícies ósseas foi evidenciada pelos restos de ninhos e túneis produzidos por esses insetos. Pelo menos nas amostras de restos humanos disponíveis para o presente estudo, o número de térmitas recolhido foi maior em ossos encontrados durante o outono, a estação chuvosa no Nordeste do Brasil. Os ossos humanos analisados apresentaram cupins como insetos com muita força na degradação óssea, com capacidade de prosseguir o processo de decomposição de restos humanos, mesmo em corpos completamente esqueletizados.

Abstract The aim of this study was to describe the first records of termite activity on non-fossilized human bones in Brazil. The cases reported in this study resulted from forensic analysis of six human skeletons found in northeastern Brazil between 2012 and 2014. Traces of tunnels and nests commonly produced by termites were found on several human bone surfaces as well as the specimens and characteristic signs of osteophagic activity. In four cases, the species were identified: Amitermes amifer Silvestri, 1901, Nasutitermes corniger (Motschulsky, 1855) (on two skeletons), and Microcerotermes indistinctus Mathews, 1977. In two other cases, the activity of termites on bone surfaces was evidenced by remains of nests and tunnels produced by these insects. At least in the samples of human remains available for this report, the number of termites collected was greater on bones found during autumn, the rainy season in the Northeast of Brazil. The human bones examined showed termites like insects with lots of strength at bone degradation, capable of continuing the process of decomposition of human remains even in completely skeletonized bodies.

The surfactants were synthesized by condensing the obtained oligosaccharides of amylose and alkyl phenols extracted from the natural cashew nut shell liquid (nCNSL). The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) data showed aromatic ring bands, glycosidic rings, olefins and paraffins. The Nuclear Overhauser Effect Spectroscopy (NOESY) experiments showed that the conformation of the glycosidic units is of the type 4C1 with an α anomeric configuration. The values of Gibbs free energy of micellization (ΔGºmic) indicate that the spontaneity of formed micelles are cardanyl oligoglycosides > cardyl oligoglycosides > anacardyl oligoglycosides. The surface tension (γ) measurements showed that critical micelle concentration (cmc) values were low for surfactants. The study γ versus lnc (g dm-3) indicated that the aggregation behavior of the surfactants is dependent on their structural characteristics, as well as their thermal behavior. The area per molecule (A) values indicates that cardyl oligoglycosides are likely to form aggregates smaller than cardanyl oligoglycosides and anacardyl oligoglycosides. The critical packing parameter (cpp) indicates that the aggregates are of the vesicles and bilayers.
