O percevejo-de-renda, Leptopharsa heveae Drake & Poor, foi estudado visando-se determinar suas exigências térmicas, e a biologia e flutuação populacional de ninfas e adultos em seringueira, Hevea brasiliensis Müell Arg. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em câmaras climatizadas reguladas a 15°C, 20°C, 25°C, 27°C e 30ºC e como hospedeiro utilizaram-se mudas de seringueira do clone RRIM 600. A flutuação populacional foi obtida amostrando-se os lados norte e sul de seringueiras do clone PB 235, considerando-se folhas das partes interna e externa dos terços inferior, médio e superior das plantas. A temperatura de 15ºC foi inadequada para o desenvolvimento embrionário de L. heveae. O período de pré-oviposição foi menor em temperaturas elevadas (27°C e 30ºC), contudo a fecundidade não se alterou na faixa de 20°C a 30ºC. Os limites térmicos inferior de desenvolvimento e as constantes térmicas das fases de ovo, ninfa e ciclo biológico foram 11,5/141,4, 8,3/234,6 e 9,8ºC/370,4 graus-dia, respectivamente. Os adultos e ninfas apresentaram picos populacionais em 30/03/99, ocorrendo também pico de adultos em 04/06/99 e de ninfas em 19/10/99. As exigências témicas possibilitaram prever a ocorrência de treze gerações de L. heveae durante o período de outubro/1998 a novembro/1999.

The rubber tree lacebug, Leptopharsa heveae Drake & Poor, was studied aiming to determine its thermal requirements, biology and the population fluctuation of nymphs and adults in rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis Müell Arg. Experiments were conducted in climatic chambers at 15°C, 20°C, 25°C, 27°C and 30°C using rubber tree seedlings clone RRIM 600 as host plant. The population fluctuation was obtained by sampling north and south sides of rubber trees clone PB 235, considering leaves of internal and external parts located in the top, middle and basal sections of the trees. The temperature of 15°C was inadequate for the embryonic development of L. heveae. The shortest lacebug pre-oviposition period was observed at the high temperatures of 27°C and 30ºC, however the female fecundity was not altered at the temperature gradient of 20°C to 30ºC. The estimated lower developmental thermal thresholds and thermal constants of the egg and nymphal phases and of the biological cycle were 11.5/141.4, 8.3/234.6 and 9.8°C/370.4 degree-day, respectively. A population peak of adults and nymphs occurred in 30/03/99; another peak of adults was also observed in 04/06/99 and nymphs in 19/10/99. The thermal requirements provided the prevision of thirteen generations of L. heveae from October/1998 to November/1999.

Estudos relacionados com tabela de vida ecológica são úteis para o entendimento da dinâmica populacional de insetos no campo. Durante o ano de 2002 foram desenvolvidas tabelas de vida ecológicas para o minador-dos-citros, Phyllocnistis citrella (Stainton), em pomar de citros (Citrus sinensis) localizado em Santa Rita do Passa Quatro, SP. A ocorrência de sobreposição de gerações de P. citrella no campo foi evitada obtendo-se posturas da praga em cavalinhos de Citrus limonia mantidos em condições controladas. As amostragens foram efetuadas a cada dois dias aproximadamente, registrando-se o número de insetos vivos, mortos, predados e parasitados. A ocorrência de artrópodes predadores foi determinada por meio de procura visual em plantas do pomar de citros. Os fatores-chave de mortalidade que atuaram sobre as populações de P. citrella foram: o parasitismo de pupa por Ageniaspis citricola (Logvinovskaya) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), a ação de fatores indeterminados em pré-pupa e a predação de larvas de 3º ínstar. Os artrópodes predadores mais abundantes encontrados pertenceram às famílias Formicidae, Chrysopidae, Coccinellidae, Reduviidae e Araneae. Em duas das cinco gerações estudadas de P. citrella, cerca de 4% das pupas de A. citricola sofreram hiperparasitismo por Galeopsomyia fausta (LaSalle) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae).

The construction of ecological life tables is a useful tool to understand the population dynamics of insects in the field. In this work, ecological life tables were developed for Phyllocnistis citrella (Stainton) in an orchard of Citrus sinensis situated in Santa Rita do Passa Quatro, Sao Paulo State, during 2002. The occurrence of generation overlay in the field was avoided by obtaining the eggs from infestation on young citrus plants (Citrus limonia) kept under controlled conditions. The samples were taken every other day and the number of live, dead, predated and parasitized individuals were recorded. The occurrence of arthropod predators was determined through visual search on the plants of the orchard. The key factors of mortality acting on P.citrella populations were: pupae parasitism caused by Ageniaspis citricola (Logvinovskaya), action of uncertain factors on prepupae and predation of 3rd-instar larvae. The most abundant arthropod predators belonged to the families Formicidae, Chrysopidae, Coccinellidae, Reduviidae e Araneae. In two of five generations of P. citrella, approximately 4% of A. citricola pupae were hyperparasitized by Galeopsomyia fausta (LaSalle) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae).

Este trabalho teve por objetivo construir tabelas de vida ecológica para Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biótipo B em soja. Para isso realizaram-se sucessivas infestações artificiais em plantas de soja, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, cultivar FT 2000. As amostragens foram realizadas retirando-se 10 folhas ao acaso com intervalos de três dias, durante oito gerações da mosca branca. O número de insetos vivos, mortos, parasitados e a distribuição etária foi registrado para cada folha amostrada. No presente trabalho os coeficientes de correlação para a mortalidade de ovos (0,1954), ninfas de 1º ínstar (0,5610) e pupas (0,6168), não foram significativos, porém as ninfas de 2º e 3º ínstar apresentaram coeficientes significativos de 0,7978 e 0,8641, respectivamente. No entanto o fator chave não foi identificado. O parasitóide Encarsia spp., apresentou-se como fator de mortalidade importante na fase de 'pupa' de B. tabaci biótipo B, porém o coeficiente de correlação não foi significativo.

This work was carried out aiming to obtain ecological life tables for Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) B-biotype in soybean. For that, successive artificial infestations were done in soybean plants, Glycine max (L.) Merril, FT 2000. Samples were made taking ten leaves randomly with intervals of three days, during eight generations of the whitefly. The number of living, dead and parasited insects and the age distribution were registered for each leaf. In this study the correlation coefficients for egg mortality (0,1954), 1st-instar nymphs (0,5610) and pupae (0,6168) were not significant, however 2nd- and 3rd-instar nymphs, showed significant coefficients 0,7978 and 0,8641 respectively, but the key factor was not identified. The parasitoid Encarsia spp. was the most important mortality factor in the pupae stage of B. tabaci B-biotype, but the correlation coefficient was not significant.

Este estudo visou determinar as exigências térmicas do pulgão Myzus persicae (Sulzer), calcular tabelas de vida de fertilidade, e prever a ocorrência de adultos no campo, por meio de modelo de graus-dia. Os pulgões foram mantidos individualmente em gaiolas fixadas em folhas de couve, Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC, em laboratório, às temperaturas de 15, 20, 23, 25 e 30ºC. O limite térmico inferior de desenvolvimento (Tb) e a constante térmica (K) foram 2,2ºC e 165,6 graus-dia, respectivamente. O modelo de graus-dia previu a ocorrência de adultos de M. persicae para 0 a1 dia antes da data em que eles foram observados no campo. Os parâmetros das tabelas de vida estimados na escala de tempo em graus-dia evidenciaram que as temperaturas de 23°C e 25°C foram as que proporcionaram as melhores condições térmicas para o crescimento populacional de M. persicae. Nessas temperaturas observou-se o maior valor da capacidade inata de aumentar em número (r m = 0,012), o menor valor da duração média da geração (T = 303,8 graus-dia e 272 graus-dia, respectivamente) e o menor tempo necessário para a população duplicar em número de indivíduos (TD = 57,8 graus-dia).

This study aimed to determine the thermal requirements of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), to calculate age-specific life tables, and to predict the occurrence of adults in the field by a degree-day model. The aphids were reared, individualized, in leaf cages set on kale, Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC., kept at 15, 20, 23, 25 and 30°C, in laboratory. The lowest developmental thermal threshold (Tb) was 2.2°C and the thermal constant (K) was 165.6 day-degree. The degree-day model predicted the occurrence of adults 0-1 day before the time they were first observed in the field. The age-specific life table parameters, on a degree-day time scale, indicated that the temperatures 23°C and 25°C provided the best thermal conditions for the population growth of M. persicae. At these temperatures the highest intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m = 0.012) was observed as well as the lowest mean generation time (T = 303.8 degree-day and T = 272 degree-day, respectively) and population doubling time (TD = 57.8 degree-day).

O conhecimento da dinâmica populacional e da distribuição vertical de insetos pragas em plantas hospedeiras é fundamental para o desenvolvimento de programas de manejo integrado de pragas. No presente trabalho efetuou-se um levantamento populacional de formas ápteras do pulgão Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), visando determinar a época de maior densidade populacional e a distribuição vertical em plantas de couve, (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC.), cultivadas em Jaboticabal, SP. O estudo foi realizado durante as safras de brássicas de 1998 e 1999, efetuando-se correção da acidez do solo por meio de aplicação de calcário apenas no campo utilizado em 1998. A amostragem dos pulgões foi feita visualmente em folhas classificadas em três categorias: apical, mediana e basal. Nas duas safras estudadas, a infestação de B. brassicae na couve atingiu a maior densidade populacional em setembro, diminuindo rapidamente a seguir. Nos dois campos não se observou a mesma distribuição de B. brassicae em folhas apicais, medianas e basais. Os fatores que podem ter contribuído para as diferenças observadas no padrão de distribuição do pulgão devem estar relacionados com a precipitação pluvial e o calcário magnesiano.

The knowledge of the population dynamics and vertical distribution of insect pests in host plants are fundamental for the development of programs of integrated pest management. In the present work, a population survey of apterous cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), was carried out aiming to determine the period when this aphid reachs the highest population density and the within-plant distributions on its common host, kale, Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC., cultivated in Jaboticabal, State of São Paulo. The study took place during the 1998 and 1999 Brassica seasons, and limestone treatment was only made in the field cultivated in 1998. The cabbage aphid was sampled by visual search on leaves classified in three categories: top, middle and basal. In the two studied seasons, the B. brassicae infestations reached the highest population density in September, decreasing quickly afterwards. In the two fields, the same distributions of B. brassicae was not observed on top, middle and basal leaves. The factors that might have contributed to the differences observed in that distribution pattern were rainfall and magnesium limestone.

Estudos relacionados com tabelas de vida são fundamentais para o entendimento da dinâmica populacional de insetos. Neste trabalho, a espécie Brevicoryne brassicae (L.) foi estudada durante a primavera, verão, outono e inverno por meio de tabelas de vida de fertilidade, visando-se avaliar a influência da temperatura sobre sua dinâmica populacional. Para a condução dos experimentos, os pulgões foram mantidos em pequenas gaiolas fixadas em folhas de couve, Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC. Os parâmetros das tabelas de vida, estimados na escala de tempo em graus-dia, evidenciaram que B. brassicae apresentou maior sobrevivência nas condiç ões térmicas de outono e inverno, o mesmo ocorrendo com sua fecundidade quando as fêmeas foram submetidas às temperaturas da primavera. As elevadas temperaturas registradas no verão influenciaram adversamente a dinâmica populacional de B. brassicae, pois afetaram negativamente seu desenvolvimento, sobrevivência, longevidade e reprodução.

Studies related with life tables are fundamental for the understanding of the population dynamics of insects. In this work, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.) was studied during spring, summer, fall and winter through age-specific life tables aiming to evaluate the influence of temperature on its population dynamic. The experiments were carried out observing B. brassicae enclosed in leaf cages fixed in kale, Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC. The age-specific life table parameters, computed on a degree-day time scale, indicated that B. brassicae showed the longest survival during the thermal conditions of fall and winter, while its highest fecundity was observed when the aphids experienced spring temperatures. High summer temperatures adversely affected the population dynamic of B. brassicae through its negative influence on immature development, survival, longevity and reproduction.

O estudo foi desenvolvido para se determinar o efeito da adubação fosfatada-potássica da soja sobre a ocorrência de insetos-praga. Os tratamentos constituíram um fatorial 4 x 4 (quatro doses de fósforo e quatro doses de potássio) com três repetições. Os níveis de fósforo utilizados foram, respectivamente (0, 80, 120 e 160 kg/ha) de P2O5 e (0, 40, 60 e 80 kg/ha) de K2O. Foram realizadas amostragens semanais a partir do estádio V2 da cultura, utilizando-se pano de amostragem. Os resultados indicaram uma tendência de aumento populacional de Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) para as maiores doses dos nutrientes. A ocorrência de Diabrotica speciosa (Germar) foi correlacionada com alguns nutrientes das folhas.

This study was developed to determine the effect of phosphate-potassic fertilization on the occurrence of soybean insect pests. Plots were arranged in a randomized complete block design in a 4 by 4 factorial experiment (four phosphate levels and four potassic levels) with three replications. The levels of phosphorus and potassic tested were, respectively: 0, 80, 120 and 160 kg/ha of P2O5 and 0, 40, 60 and 80 kg/ha of K2O. The insect population survey was carried out on a weekly-basis starting from the V2 stage, using ground-cloth. The results showed a tendency of population growth of Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) for the highest levels of nutrients. Some leaf nutrients were correlated with Diabrotica speciosa (Germar).

O desenvolvimento (ovo-adulto) da mosca-branca, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biótipo B (=Bemisia argentifolii, Bellows & Perring), foi estudado em condições de campo e em câmaras climatizadas, reguladas nas temperaturas constantes de 15, 20, 25, 30 e 35±1ºC, usando soja, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, cultivar Msoy 8001, como planta hospedeira. O limite térmico inferior de desenvolvimento (Tb) e a constante térmica (K) das fases de ovo, ninfa e ciclo biológico (ovo-adulto) foram 11,1ºC / 98,8 graus-dia, 6,8ºC / 383,8 graus-dia e 8,3ºC / 472,6 graus-dia, respectivamente. Nas temperaturas extremas (15ºC e 35ºC), a viabilidade dos insetos mostrou-se menor. No campo, a emergência de 70% dos adultos ocorreu depois de terem sido acumulados 413,2 graus-dia. O modelo de graus-dia utilizado mostrou-se adequado para a previsão de ocorrência de adultos de Bemisia tabaci biótipo B no campo, podendo também ser utilizado para determinação do número de gerações nas diferentes regiões do País.

The development (egg-adult) of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) B-biotype (=Bemisia argentifolii, Bellows & Perring), was studied in field conditions and in incubators at constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35±1ºC), using soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, Msoy 8001, as host plant. The temperatures threshold (Tb) and the thermal constant (K) for egg, nymph and life cycle (egg-adult) were 11.1ºC / 98.8 degree-days; 6.8ºC / 383.8 degree-days and 8.3ºC / 472.6 degree-days, respectively. At the temperatures of 15ºC and 35ºC, insect viability was smaller. In the field, 70% of the adults emerged after 413,2 degree-day were accumulated. The degree-day pattern used was adequate for the previewing Bemisia tabaci B-biotype adult occurrence in field, and it can also be used to determine the number of generations in different areas of the country.

Neste estudo, visou-se avaliar o impacto de inimigos naturais e de fatores meteorológicos na população do pulgão Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), na cultura da couve, usando-se correlação simples e análise de regressão múltipla com seleção de variáveis pelo método stepwise. A amostragem de B. brassicae foi realizada por procura visual e dos inimigos naturais através de armadilhas de sucção e de solo. Formas ápteras de B. brassicae começaram a infestar a couve em julho, atingindo pico populacional em setembro. Os fatores que apresentaram correlação significativa com a população de B. brassicae, no período que abrangeu todo o levantamento populacional, foram Diaeretiella rapae (Mc'Intosh), aranhas presentes no solo, precipitação pluviométrica e umidade relativa, sugerindo que tais fatores tiveram função importante na mortalidade do pulgão. No período de maior crescimento e declínio populacional de B. brassicae, aranhas presentes no solo mostraram-se como o fator de mortalidade mais significativo relacionado com a variação da densidade populacional do pulgão.

The dynamics of a population of the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), was studied to estimate the impact of natural enemies and meteorological factors using simple correlation and stepwise regression. Apterous B. brassicae were sampled by visual search, and natural enemies by suction net and pitfall traps. The aphids began to infest kale in July, reaching peak population in September. The factors Diaeretiella rapae (Mc'Intosh), ground spiders, rainfall and relative humidity showed significant correlation with B. brassicae population, in the period that embraced the whole population survey, which suggests that these factors had an important function in the mortality of the aphid. During the period of highest increase and decline of the population of B. brassicae, ground spiders constituted the most significant mortality factor related with the variation of the population density of the aphid.

O pulgão Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.) foi criado a diferentes temperaturas, visando-se obter tabelas de esperança e fertilidade de vida em condições de laboratório e campo. Os insetos foram mantidos sobre couve, Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala, em câmaras climatizadas a 15, 20, 25 e 30°C, fotofase de 14h e UR de 70±10%. O intervalo de tempo de cada geração (T) foi maior a 15°C (23,86 dias) e menor a 30°C (7,18 dias), enquanto a taxa líquida de reprodução (Ro) foi menor a 15°C (4,30) e maior a 25°C (38,29). Nas temperaturas de 15, 20, 25 e 30°C a capacidade inata de aumentar em número (r m) e a razão finita de aumento (lambda) foram 0,06/1,06, 0,24/1,27, 0,28/1,33 e 0,23/1,25, respectivamente. O tempo necessário para a população duplicar o número de indivíduos (TD) a 15, 20, 25 e 30°C, foi 11,55, 2,89, 2,47 e 3,01 dias, respectivamente. Para condições de campo, a taxa líquida de reprodução (Ro) para L. erysimi foi maior no inverno (53,50) do que no verão (40,99), o mesmo ocorrendo para o intervalo de tempo entre cada geração (T) que no inverno foi de 13,85 dias e no verão de 7,57 dias. A capacidade inata de aumentar em número (r m) e a razão finita de aumento (lambda) foram 0,29/1,34 e 0,40/1,63 para inverno e verão, respectivamente. O tempo necessário para a população duplicar em número de indivíduos (TD) foi maior no inverno (2,39 dias) que no verão (1,41 dias). A longevidade de L. erysimi é, portanto, influenciada pela temperatura e os melhores parâmetros de tabela de vida de fertilidade em condições de laboratório são obtidos a 25°C. Os resultados obtidos no campo reforçam essa afirmação. L. erysimi apresentou maior fecundidade diária e menor longevidade no verão que no inverno, resultando na maior capacidade inata de aumentar em número e duplicando a população em menor tempo.

In this study, the aphid Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt) was reared at different temperatures, under laboratory and field conditions, aiming to obtain age-specific life tables. In the laboratory, L. erysimi was fed on kale, Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala, and kept in incubators adjusted to 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30ºC, 14h photophase and 70±10% RH. The longest mean generation time (T) was observed at 15ºC (23.86 days) and the shortest at 30ºC (7.18 days), while the smallest net reproductive rate (R0) occurred at 15ºC (4.30) and largest one at 25ºC (38.29). For the temperatures of 15, 20, 25 and 30ºC, the intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) and the finite rate of increase (lambda) were 0.06/1.06, 0.24/1.27, 0.28/1.33 and 0.23/1.25, respectively. The doubling time (DT) at 15, 20, 25 and 30ºC were 11.55, 2.80, 2.47, and 3.01 days, respectively. Under field conditions, the net reproductive rate (R0) of L. erysimi was larger in the winter (53.50) than in the summer (40.99), the same being observed for the mean generation time (T), which was 13.85 days in the winter and 7.57 days in the summer. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) and the finite rate of increase (lambda) were 0.29/1.34 and 0.40/1.63 for winter and summer, respectively. The doubling time (DT) observed for winter (2.39 days) was larger than the one observed for summer (1.41 days). The temperature affects longevity of L. erysimi and the best parameters of life table of fertility under laboratory conditions are obtained at 25°C. The data obtained in field conditions reinforced this finding. The daily fecundity was higher and longevity was smaller in the summer than in the winter, thus increasing the innate capacity of increasing in number and duplicating the population in a shorter period of time.

Experimentos de laboratório e de campo foram realizados de outubro de 1998 a agosto de 1999, visando estimar as exigências térmicas de Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt). Para isso, o desenvolvimento do afídeo foi estudado em condições de laboratório em couve, Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala, usando câmaras climatizadas reguladas a 10, 15, 20, 25 e 30°C, fotofase de 14h e UR de 70±10%. O limite térmico inferior de desenvolvimento de L. erysimi foi de 3,04°C e a constante térmica 132,21 graus-dia. A previsão de ocorrência de adultos no campo foi feita usando-se o método da triangulação; o pico populacional foi previsto para 0-1 dia antes da data em que o mesmo foi observado no campo.

Laboratory and field experiments were conducted from October 1998 to August 1999, aiming to estimate the thermal requirements of Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.). The development of the aphid was studied under laboratory conditions in kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala. using incubators adjusted to 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30ºC, 14h photophase and 70±10% RH. The lower developmental thermal threshold found was 3.04°C and the thermal constant 132.21 degree-days. The prediction of adult occurrence in the field was done using the triangulation method; the populational peak was predicted to occur 0-1 day before the date it was actually observed in the field.

O presente estudo foi desenvolvido na FCAV-UNESP, em Jaboticabal, SP, durante as safras agrícolas de 1995/96 e 1996/97, visando à previsão de ocorrência de ninfas e adultos de Piezodorus guildinii (West.), por meio de um modelo de graus-dia. As datas em que as primeiras posturas e os primeiros adultos do percevejo foram encontrados na soja foram usadas para dar início à soma acumulada de graus-dia. A previsão de ocorrência foi mais precisa para picos populacionais de adultos do que para diferentes ínstares de P. guildinii.

This study was carried out at the Universidade Estadual Paulista, Jaboticabal Campus, SP, during the 1995/96 and 1996/97 growing seasons, aiming to predict the occurrence of nymphs and adults of Piezodorus guildinii (West.), using a degree-day model. The day when egg masses and adults of the stink bug were first observed in soybean plants was used as the biofix point. The prediction of populational peaks of adults of P. guildinii was more accurate than for occurrence of nymphs.

Estudou-se em condições de campo, a previsão de picos populacionais de adultos de Piezodorus guildinii (West.), Nezara viridula (L.) e Euschistus heros (Fabr.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), por meio de um modelo de graus-dia. Considerando-se o desenvolvimento do ciclo biológico, observou-se que mais de 70% da emergência dos adultos de P. guildinii, N. viridula e E. heros ocorreu depois de terem sido acumulados em média 307,7; 753,8 e 370,3 graus-dia respectivamente, sendo as diferenças entre a data prevista e a observada de 0-3 dias para P. guildinii e N. viridula e 5-6 dias E. heros.

The study was carried out to predict, in the field, the occurrence of populational peaks of adults of Piezodorus guildinii (West.), Nezara viridula (L.) and Euschistus heros (Fabr.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), using a degree-day model. Considering the development of the biological cycle, it was observed that more than 70% of adult emergence of P. guildinii, N. viridula and E. heros occurred when means of 307.7, 753.8 and 370.3 degree-day respectively had been accumulated. The differences between predicted and observed dates for emergence were 0-3 days for P. guildinii and N. viridula and 5-6 days for E. heros.
