ABSTRACT Biochemical assays in a time-course were employed to evaluate stresses induced by glyphosate treatment in resistant and sensitive biotypes of Conyza bonariensis. Two experiments were conducted assessing glyphosate doses and time-course after treatment. The doses of glyphosate ranged from 0 to 11840 g ae·ha–1 and assessments performed until 552 h after glyphosate treatment (HAT). The objectives of this study were to evaluate the oxidative stress and differential antioxidant enzyme activity in glyphosate-resistant and -sensitive biotypes of hairy fleabane after glyphosate treatment. After treatment, both studied biotypes accumulated similar levels of shikimic-acid until 96 h. The sensitive biotype died at192 HAT. Shikimic-acid and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) accumulation in glyphosate-resistant biotype were transient and did not differ from untreated plants at 288 and 500 HAT, respectively. In both glyphosate-resistant and -sensitive biotypes, a correlation analysis established a cause-and-effect relationship after glyphosate treatment, which leads to shikimic-acid and hydrogen peroxide accumulation, lipid peroxidation (indicates tissue damage) and an enhancement in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) enzyme. However, in the glyphosate-resistant biotype, the oxidative stress and tissue damage were lower, and antioxidant enzyme activities SOD, CAT, and APX were higher than in the -sensitive biotype. It indicates that antioxidant enzyme in glyphosate-resistant biotype might be related to the glyphosate-resistance process in Conyza bonariensis. This study is the first report of differential antioxidant enzyme activity in hairy fleabane.

RESUMO: A ocorrência de milho voluntário em soja é favorecida pelo cultivo de milho tolerante ao glyphosate antecedendo a soja e pelo sistema de semeadura direta. A interferência de milho voluntário causa significativas perdas no rendimento de grãos de soja. Os níveis de perdas no rendimento da cultura variam com a densidade do milho voluntário, origem e época de emergência. Altos níveis de interferência de plantas daninhas nas culturas podem resultar na produção de espécies reativas de oxigênio e levar à ocorrência de estresse oxidativo. Os objetivos deste estudo foram avaliar os efeitos da interferência de (1) diferentes origens (plantas individuais e touceiras) e épocas de emergência de milho voluntário no crescimento, nos componentes do rendimento e no rendimento de grãos de soja; e (2) se a interferência de milho voluntário causa estresse oxidativo na soja. Foram realizados experimento em campo e análises em laboratório. As variáveis avaliadas foram os componentes do rendimento e rendimento de grãos de soja, conteúdo de peróxido de hidrogênio - H2O2, bem como as atividades das enzimas antioxidantes superóxido dismutase - SOD, catalase - CAT e ascorbato peroxidase - APX. As interferências causadas pelo milho voluntário resultaram na redução dos componentes do rendimento e do rendimento de grãos de soja. As mais altas perdas no rendimento de grãos de soja foram observadas para a interferência de touceiras em relação a plantas individuais. Independentemente da origem do milho, as perdas foram maiores quando a emergência ocorreu aos 10 dias antes e no mesmo dia que a soja, em relação aos emergidos 10 dias após. O conteúdo de H2O2 e a atividade das enzimas SOD, CAT e APX variaram em resposta às interferências causadas por plantas e touceiras de milho voluntário. No entanto, os resultados indicam que a interferência do milho voluntário não resultou em estresse oxidativo na soja.

ABSTRACT: Volunteer corn occurrence with soybean is favored by the glyphosate-resistant (GR) corn cultivation preceding soybean and no-tillage systems. Volunteer corn interference causes significant losses in soybean grain yield. The levels of crop losses change with the corn density, origin, and time of emergence. High levels of weed interference in crops can result in the production of reactive oxygen species and lead to the occurrence of oxidative stress. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of interference of (1) different origins (individual plants and clumps) and times of emergence of volunteer corn on soybean growth, yield components, and grain yield loss; and (2) if the volunteer corn interference causes oxidative stress in soybean. Field experiment and laboratory analyses were performed. The evaluated variables were soybean yield components, grain yield, hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 content, and antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase - SOD, catalase - CAT, and ascorbate peroxidase - APX activities. Volunteer corn interference reduced the yield components and soybean yield. The highest yield losses were observed with volunteer corn clumps regarding individual plants. The interference of volunteer corn emerged 10 days before or on the same day as soybean caused the greater yield losses than those emerged 10 days after, independently of its origin. The content of H2O2 and enzyme SOD, CAT and APX activities changed in soybean leaves in response to the interference of volunteer corn plants and clumps. However, the results indicate that the volunteer corn interferences does not cause oxidative stress in soybean.

RESUMO: O cultivo de milho RR® antecedendo a soja favorece a ocorrência de plantas voluntárias de milho RR® interferindo em lavouras de soja. A interferência de plantas voluntárias de milho reduz a produtividade da soja, sendo mais intensa quanto maior for a população. A intensa redução na produtividade da soja sob inteferência de milho voluntário pode estar relacionada com o estresse oxidativo decorrente da maior produção de espécies reativas de oxigênio (EROs), como o peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2). O objetivo deste estudo foi quantificar os teores de H2O2 e a atividade das enzimas superóxido dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) e ascorbato peroxidase (APX) na soja em competição com populações de milho voluntário RR®, originado de plantas individuais e/ou touceiras (sete plantas de milho emergidas no mesmo ponto) em diferentes épocas, bem como, determinar se a interferência de milho voluntário altera o metabolismo do estresse em soja. As quantificações foram realizadas aos 20, 35 e 46 dias após a emergência (DAE) da soja. As populações médias de milho utilizadas foram de 0, 0,5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 10 e 12 plantas ou touceiras m-2. Os resultados demonstram alterações nos teores de H2O2 e na atividade das enzimas SOD, CAT e APX com o aumento das populações de ambas as origens do milho. A maior atividade enzimática foi observada para a SOD. A produtividade da soja reduz com o aumento nas populações de plantas individuais e touceiras de milho voluntário.

ABSTRACT: The cultivation of GR® corn prior to soybean favors the occurrence of GR® volunteer corn plants interfering in soybean crops. The interference of volunteer corn causes the soybean yield losses, and the magnitude of losses varies with the corn density. The soybean yield losses can be partially explained by the occurrence of oxidative stress, which occurs by the higher content of reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The objective of this study was to quantify H2O2 content and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) on soybean as a function of interference of populations of GR® volunteer corn originated from individual plants and clumps (clumps are seven corn plants emerged at the same point) in different times, as well as to determine wheter this interference alters stress metabolism on soybean. Quantification was performed at 20, 35 and 46 days after emergence (DAE) of soybean. The mean volunteer corn populations were 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 10 and 12 plants or clumps m-2. The results show changes in H2O2 content and SOD, CAT and APX activity as a response to interference with volunteer corn populations and origins. The higher activity was observated for SOD. Soybean yield reduce with the increase of populations of volunteer corn originated from individual plants and clumps.

RESUMO: O cultivo do feijão após milho favorece a ocorrência de plantas voluntárias de milho, que interferem e causam redução da produtividade da cultura. As perdas na produtividade em função das interferências causadas pelo milho podem estar relacionadas com o estresse oxidativo decorrente da maior produção de espécies reativas de oxigênio (EROs), como o peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2). Os objetivos deste trabalho foram quantificar os teores de H2O2 e verificar a atividade das enzimas superóxido dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbato peroxidase (APX) e produtividade do feijão sob a interferência de densidades e origens de milho voluntário RR® F2. Foram realizados dois experimentos em campo, no delineamento de blocos casualizados com três repetições. O milho voluntário foi originado de plantas individuais (experimento 1) e de touceiras (sete plantas de milho no mesmo ponto) (experimento 2). As densidades populacionais de milho interferindo com o feijão foram de 0, 0,5, 1, 2; 4, 8 e 12 plantas ou touceiras m-2, respectivamente nos experimentos 1 e 2. As quantificações enzimáticas foram feitas em laboratório aos 21, 35 e 46 dias após a emergência (DAE) do feijão. Os resultados demonstram alterações nos teores de H2O2 e na atividade das enzimas SOD, CAT e APX em função das densidades do milho voluntário, sendo que a atividade da SOD foi mais alta. As interferências causadas por milho voluntário no feijão alteraram o metabolismo do estresse das plantas, porém, não resultaram em estresse oxidativo. A produtividade do feijão reduziu de forma significativa sob interferência com densidades e origens do milho voluntário RR® F2. A análise conjunta dos experimentos demonstrou que touceiras causam maiores perdas na produtividade do feijão em relação a plantas individuais, entre as densidades estudadas.

ABSTRACT: Dry bean cultivation after corn favors the occurrence of volunteer corn plants which interfere with the crop and cause yield losses of dry bean. Yield losses resulting from interferences caused by corn may be related to oxidative stress, which, in turn, is caused by the higher production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). This work aimed to quantify H2O2 contents, and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in dry beans under interference with densities of volunteer corn F2 originated from individual plants and clumps (seven corn plants emerged at the same point). Two experiments were carried out in a randomized blocks design with three replicates in Passo Fundo - RS, Brazil. Enzyme analysis was performed in a laboratory at 21, 35 and 46 days after dry bean emergence (DAE). Corn densities were 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12 plants or clumps m-2. The results show changes in H2O2 levels and in the activity of SOD, CAT, and APX enzymes with the increase of corn densities, in which the highest activity occurred for SOD. The interference of volunteer corn with dry beans alters the stress metabolism of dry bean but does not cause oxidative stress. The yield of dry beans reduced under interference with volunteer corn F2, but it is higher when the corn was originated from clumps.
