Abstract Neocaridina davidi (Bouvier, 1904) is a shrimp commonly used in aquaculture throughout the world. It is an exotic species in several places. We investigated the preference of N. davidi for four types of shelter (rock, Vesicularia sp., Egeria sp., and wood) and its nictemeral activity variation. Individuals were divided into three experimental groups: males, non-ovigerous females, and ovigerous females. They were placed in tanks with the four shelter types and observed every 3 hours for 72 hours. Neocaridina davidi presented cryptic behavior with 82.1 ± 8.69% of individuals sheltering per observation. Sheltering was higher during the daytime (88.8 ±5.54%) than at nighttime (75.4 ± 5.53%). Vesicularia sp. was the most used shelter followed by wood. The least used shelter type was a rock. Swimming and walking were more frequently observed at nighttime, especially for ovigerous females. We have demonstrated the importance of providing shelter for the maintenance of N. davidi in tanks as well as its higher activity at nighttime.

Abstract The objective of this study is to report the first occurrences of three species from the genus Lysmata Risso, 1816 in an area of the Queimada Grande Island (QGI), a conservation unit on the southern coast of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. The specimens were sampled manually in August 2018 from a small rocky formation from the QGI region. The species Lysmata bahia Rhyne and Lin, 2006, Lysmata uncicornis Holthuis and Maruin, 1952, and Lysmata vittata (Stimpson, 1860) are reported, of which the last two are not native to the Western Atlantic waters. The present study reports L. uncicornis for the first time on the coast of São Paulo State. The records informed herein not only provide more information about biodiversity, but can also help in the development of management plans and conservation.

Abstract Atya gabonensis Giebel, 1875 and Atya scabra (Leach, 1816) are amphidromous shrimps. In some areas, these species populations are vulnerable due to the anthropogenic impact on their habitats and commercial exploitation. However, basic morphometric data is still lacking. This study provides morphometric data on both species in the Fluvial Island Domain of Paraíba do Sul River basin, Brazil. Sampling was performed bimonthly from January 2013 to March 2014. Individuals were analysed according to sex, weight, carapace length and width, abdomen length, second abdominal pleura height and width, length of third pereopod articles, and length and width of the male appendix interna. We sampled 42 individuals of A. gabonensis and 16 individuals of A. scabra. In both species, females showed abdomen and second abdominal pleura larger than males, while males showed third pereopod articles larger than females, both related to sexual dimorphism. We detected differences in the carapace length × carapace width relationship and in the growth pattern of the male appendix interna between species, with A. gabonensis presenting the carapace and the male appendix interna wider than A. scabra. Morphometric aspects of both species are unpublished for this region, and this data is valuable for A. gabonensis in the western Atlantic and for A. scabra from Rio de Janeiro state. Such information is essential for future systematic assessment and establishment of conservation management policies.

O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu em avaliar o desempenho agronómico de cultivares e linhas superiores de feijão-caupi de porte semiprostrado no Norte de Minas Gerais. Foram avaliadas 16 linhas superiores e quatro cultivares de feijão-caupi de porte semiprostrado, nos anos de 2014 e 2015 (verão-outono).O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os genótipos foram avaliados quanto ao tipo de porte, acama, valor de cultivo, índice e rendimento de grãos.Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância conjunta, considerando os dois anos de cultivo. Houve efeito significativo dos genótipos para as variáveis tipo de porte das plantas (PP), valor de cultivo (VC) e rendimento de grãos (RG). Os anos de cultivo influenciaram significativamente o porte das plantas, a acama e o índice de grãos. A interação genótipo x ano influenciou significativamente as variáveis porte das plantas e rendimento de grão. Os genótipos MNC04-774F-90, MNC04-769F-26 e BRS Marataoã destacam-se dos restantes por apresentarem maiores rendimentos de grão e maiores valores de cultivo, nos dois anos avaliados. Verificou-se também que os valores de porte de plantas, acama e índice de grãos destes genótipos estão conforme o indicado no padrão comercial. Estes resultados indicam um bom potencial produtivo e possibilidade de adaptação ao cultivo nas condições do Norte de Minas Gerais.

This study evaluated the agronomic performance of cultivars and elite lines of semi-prostrate cowpea in the North of Minas Gerais. We analyzed 16 elite lines and four cultivars of semi-prostrate cowpea, in summer-autumn crops (2014 and 2015). The experimental design was in randomized blocks with four replications. The genotypes were evaluated for growth habitat, lodging, value of cultivation, index and seed yield. The data were submitted to individual and joint variance analysis involving two years. There was a significant effect of interaction genotype and year for the variables growth habit and seed yield. For the value of cultivation there was a significant effect only for genotypes. The variables lodging and grain index were significantly influenced for year. There were more lodging and grain index in the summer-autumn crop of 2015. All genotypes have adequate growth habit and characterized as semi-prostate or prostate. The MNC04-774F-90, MNC04-769F-26 and BRS Marataoã genotypes stand out amongst the other genotypes because they have higher seed yields and values of cultivation in the two evaluated years, which shows good productive potential and possibility of adaptation to cultivation in the North of the Minas Gerais.

ABSTRACT Macrobrachium amazonicum is a commercially important freshwater prawn with a high degree of reproductive plasticity. The species is classified into two groups: coastal populations, with larger individuals exhibiting high fecundity and needing brackish water for larval development; and continental populations, with smaller specimens exhibiting low fecundities and completing metamorphosis in freshwater. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of environmental factors in the fecundity, egg size and volume, and reproductive output in females of M. amazonicum from a continental population during a two-year period. We also compared our results with those obtained for other continental and coastal populations. Reproductive parameters differed markedly between continental and coastal populations in most cases. The continental population studied here, however, exhibited reproductive characteristics similar to those of coastal populations. The present study found a correlation between the reproductive parameters and the environmental variables analyzed. This result corroborates the hypothesis that wide variation in reproductive parameters in the geographical distribution of M. amazonicum is related to the environmental characteristics in which populations are inserted. We suggest that further studies could investigate the potential of continental populations for aquaculture, which could significantly reduce production costs.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho de linhagens elite de feijão-caupi de porte ereto e semiereto em ambientes de Mato Grosso e Minas Gerais. Os ensaios foram conduzidos em Jaíba, Janaúba e Sete Lagoas em Minas Gerais, e em Primavera do Leste e Nova Ubiratã em Mato Grosso. Foram avaliados 20 genótipos de feijão-caupi. Utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos a análises de variância individuais e conjunta e as médias agrupadas pelo teste de Scott-Knott (P<0,05). Foram avaliados os caracteres porte da planta, acamamento, valor de cultivo, comprimento de vagem e rendimento de grãos. Nos ambientes do Mato Grosso, destacaram-se as linhagens MNC04-768F-21 e MNC04F-795F-168 como as mais produtivas e com características de porte da planta, acamamento e valor de cultivo semelhantes às da cultivar BRS Guariba. Nos ambientes de Minas Gerais, especialmente na região Norte do Estado, representada pelos ambientes de Jaíba e Janaúba, destacaram-se como mais produtivas as linhagens MNC04-769F-30, MNC05-795F-154, MNC04-769F-49 e a cultivar BRS Tumucumaque. Entretanto, as cultivares BRS Guariba, BRS Tumucumaque, BRS Novaera, BRS Itaim e BRS Cauamé, e as linhagens MNC04-792F-143 e MNC04-792F-144 apresentam produtividades satisfatórias e boas características de porte, acamamento e valor de cultivo, representando boas alternativas para recomendação de cultivo nesta região.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the agronomic performance of erect and semi-erect cowpea elite lines grown in the States of Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso, Brazil. The experiments were conducted in Jaíba, Janaúba, Sete Lagoas (Minas Gerais), Primavera do Leste and Nova Ubiratã (Mato Grosso), with 20 genotypes of cowpea, arranged in a randomized block design with four replications. The data were subjected to individual and joint analyses of variance and means grouped by the Scott-Knott test (p<0.05). The plant growth habit, lodging, cultivation value, pod length and bean yield were evaluated. The lines MNC04-768F-21 and MNC04F-795F-168 had the highest bean yield in the experiments conducted in Mato Grosso, and their growth habit, lodging and cultivation value were similar to those of the cultivar BRS-Guariba. The lines MNC04-769F-30, MNC05-795F-154 and MNC04-769F-49 and the cultivar BRS-Tumucumaque had the highest bean yield in the experiments conducted in Minas Gerais. However, the cultivars BRS-Guariba, BRS-Tumucumaque, BRS-Novaera, BRS-Itaim and BRS-Cauamé and the lines MNC04-792F-143 and MNC04-792F-144 showed satisfactory bean yield and good growth habit, plant lodging and cultivation value in the State of Minas Gerais, especially in the northern region of the state (Jaíba and Janaúba), representing good alternatives for the genotypes recommended for this region.

The relationship between species abundance and environmental factors such as the bottom water temperature and salinity, the texture and organic matter content of the sediment and the distribution of Pleoticus muelleri and Artemesia longinaris were investigated. Specimens and samples of abiotic factors were collected monthly from May 2008 to April 2010 at 4 locations in Santos Bay on the southern coast of the State of São Paulo. A shrimp boat equipped with an otter-trawl net with an 8 m mouth aperture and a mesh size of 20 mm tapering to 18 mm at the cod end was used for sampling. Shrimp abundances were compared with an analysis of variance (ANOVA). However, when the data did not follow a normal distribution, we used the Kruskal-Wallis test. The relationship between environmental factors and the abundance of individuals was assessed with a Pearson's correlation. The largest catches of individuals of both species occurred in the late spring of 2008. The greatest abundance occurred at the outer part of the bay (collection point 4). The greatest abundance of P. muelleri was associated with lower temperatures and sediments with higher clay and organic matter content, whereas for A. longinaris, there was no significant correlation with any of the abiotic factors recorded. However, the occurrence of both species was related to lower bottom temperatures associated with the intrusion of the South Atlantic Central Water in the region.
