ABSTRACT The present study aimed to develop a methodology for analyzing the dynamics and maintenance of the water purification ecosystem service in the water bodies of the Guandu River Hydrographic Region, responsible for water supplying the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region, characterized by the presence of water transfers and low levels of effluent treatment. The dynamics of this service occurs through an ecosystem flow, influenced by the volume of water that moves from one region to another. The methodology consisted of reviewing studies of ecosystem flows, building a database, classifying impacts on water purification in hydrological planning units from a similarity dendrogram, analyzing indicators related to water demands and availability of these units, and developing an ecosystem flow diagram of water purification. The effects of transfers on the maintenance and flow of water purification were also analyzed from the comparison between the real scenario (which considers the presence of the existing hydraulic infrastructure) and the natural scenario (which disregards it). The results showed that the worst situation of maintenance of water purification is in the western part of the region, and the demands for it requires more than double the volume of withdrawn water to supply the local population and industry.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve como objetivo desenvolver uma metodologia para análise da dinâmica e manutenção do serviço ecossistêmico de purificação da água nos corpos hídricos da Região Hidrográfica do Rio Guandu, responsável pelo abastecimento de água da Região Metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro, caracterizada pela presença de baixos níveis de tratamento de efluentes. A dinâmica desse serviço ocorre por meio de um fluxo ecossistêmico, influenciado pelo volume de água que se desloca de uma região para outra. A metodologia consistiu em revisar estudos de fluxos ecossistêmicos, construir um banco de dados, classificar impactos na purificação de água em unidades de planejamento hidrológico a partir de um dendrograma de similaridade, analisar indicadores relacionados à demanda e disponibilidade hídrica dessas unidades e desenvolver um fluxograma ecossistêmico de purificação de água. Os efeitos das transposições na manutenção e no fluxo da purificação da água também foram analisados a partir da comparação entre o cenário real (que considera a presença da infraestrutura hidráulica existente) e o cenário natural (que a desconsidera). Os resultados mostraram que a pior situação de manutenção da purificação da água está na parte oeste da região, e que as demandas por este serviço ecossistêmico exigem mais que o dobro do volume de água captada para abastecer a população local e a indústria.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever um protocolo clínico para a fabricação de próteses superiores e inferiores usando a tecnologia CAD/CAM. Além disso, as próteses digitais e convencionais fabricadas para o mesmo paciente foram comparadas. A comparação foi baseada na satisfação, conforto, retenção, número de sessões de acompanhamento, desempenho mastigatório e qualidade de vida do paciente. Nenhuma etapa laboratorial foi necessária para a fabricação de CAD/CAM e menos sessões foram necessárias até a inserção da prótese. Comparadas às próteses convencionais, as próteses digitais proporcionavam melhor satisfação, conforto e retenção e exigiam menos sessões de acompanhamento. Ambas as próteses apresentaram resultados semelhantes sobre desempenho mastigatório e qualidade de vida. Como conclusão, a prótese digital é uma alternativa viável para o tratamento de pacientes desdentados. No entanto, ensaios clínicos controlados e randomizados são necessários para revelar os benefícios reais dessa alternativa de tratamento em comparação com a prótese convencional.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to describe a clinical protocol for fabrication of maxillary and mandibular dentures using CAD/CAM technology. Further, digital and conventional dentures fabricated for the same patient were compared. The comparison was based on patient’s satisfaction, comfort, retention, number of follow-up sessions, masticatory performance and quality of life. No laboratorial step was needed for CAD/CAM fabrication and less sessions were required up to denture insertion. Compared to the conventional dentures, digital dentures provided better satisfaction, comfort and retention and required less follow-up sessions. Both dentures presented similar results about masticatory performance and quality of life. As a conclusion, digital denture is a viable treatment alternative for edentulous patients. However, controlled and randomized clinical trials are required to reveal the real benefits of this treatment alternative compared to the conventional denture.

Resumo Estudos com a abordagem de serviços ecossistêmicos (ES) desenvolvidos no Brasil com base no quadro da Avaliação de Ecossistemas do Milênio (MEA) variam desde a avaliação quantitativa e qualitativa até o desenvolvimento de instrumentos econômicos para pagamento por serviços ecossistêmicos (PES) ou compensação por sua manutenção, principalmente de serviços hidrológicos. Para sintetizar a atual produção de conhecimento e a estrutura de ensino em ES e também fornecer uma base para futuras pesquisas no Brasil, nós realizamos uma revisão sistemática de publicações sobre ES e uma pesquisa sobre a disponibilidade de cursos de graduação e pós-graduação relacionados aos ES. Nossa revisão sistemática encontrou 282 publicações para o período 2006-2017, que incluiu artigos revisados por pares, livros, capítulos de livros, teses, dissertações, artigos em anais e publicações técnicas. Identificamos o conhecimento atual, as interações entre instituições, lacunas de conhecimento e prioridades que deveriam ser consideradas em pesquisas futuras. O artigo fornece informações sobre estudos futuros e é um passo importante para considerar ES como uma abordagem para atingir os objetivos do desenvolvimento sustentável.

Abstract Studies using the ‘ecosystem services’ (ES) approach developed in Brazil based on the framework of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA), and range from quantitative and qualitative evaluation to the development of economic instruments for payment for ecosystem services (PES) or compensation for their maintenance, mainly for hydrological services. In order to summarize current knowledge regarding ES, the structure for teaching in ES, and also to provide a basis for future research in Brazil, we carried out a systematic review of publications on ES and a study on the availability of undergraduate and graduate courses related to ES. We found 282 publications for the 2006-2017 period, which included peer-reviewed articles, books, book chapters, theses, dissertations, articles in annals and technical publications. We identified current knowledge, knowledge gaps and trends in ES researches that may guide surveys and scenario analyses for future studies, in different biomes and regions of the country. Atlantic Forest and Amazon are the most-studied biome. Most of the studies were related to the evaluation of different types of ES and to the development of methodologies for their evaluation and monitoring. The most common ES are related to biodiversity, carbon sequestration and water.

Resumo A pressão humana sobre os serviços ecossistêmicos tem resultado em impactos indesejáveis sobre o bem-estar humano. Com o Projeto Millennium, várias pesquisas interdisciplinares têm sido desenvolvidas em todo o mundo com o objetivo de entender esses impactos sobre os fluxos e os processos dos ecossistemas e internalizar os custos e os benefícios dos serviços ecossistêmicos para a produção. O solo fornece muitos serviços ecossistêmicos, uma vez que sua multifuncionalidade é a base para a produção de alimentos, filtração de água, ciclagem de nutrientes e outros bens essenciais à vida. Este artigo apresenta os principais conceitos e classificações dos serviços ecossistêmicos do solo e de suas funções; os indicadores e os métodos de avaliação, modelagem e valoração dos serviços ecossistêmicos; algumas aplicações recentes para avaliar impactos de práticas de manejo agrícola sobre os serviços ecossistêmicos do solo; bem como os desafios e as oportunidades para a pesquisa e para o desenvolvimento de políticas públicas relacionadas à sustentabilidade agroambiental no Brasil. Apesar de o papel do solo para prestação de serviços ecossistêmicos ainda ser subestimado, os cientistas têm gradualmente reconhecido os processos e as funções do solo como fundamentais para avaliar os serviços ecossistêmicos e os efeitos do uso e manejo da terra sobre eles. Abordagens interdisciplinares que integrem ciência e políticas públicas são necessárias para construir uma governança com base em serviços ecossistêmicos.

Abstract Human pressure on ecosystems has undesirable impacts on human well-being. After the Millennium Project, much interdisciplinary research has been developed worldwide aiming to understand these impacts on ecosystem flows and processes, and to learn about the costs and the benefits of ecosystem services for production. Soil provides many ecosystem services, since its multi-functionality is the basis for food production, water filtration, nutrient cycling, and other goods essential to life. This article presents the main concepts and classifications of soil ecosystem services and of its functions; the indicators and the methods for assessment, modeling, and valuation of ecosystem services; some recent applications to assess and evaluate impacts of agricultural management practices on soil ecosystem services; as well as challenges and opportunities for research and for development of public policies related to agro-environmental sustainability in Brazil. Although the role of soil in supplying ecosystem services is yet undervalued, scientists are gradually recognizing soil processes and functions as fundamental to assess ecosystem services and the effects of land use and management on them. Interdisciplinary approaches to integrate science and public policies are necessary to build governance based on ecosystem services.

Abstract The aim of this non-randomized controlled clinical trial was to evaluate the oral health-related quality of life and masticatory efficiency of patients rehabilitated with mandibular two-implant overdentures with immediate loading or conventional dentures. Fifty completely edentulous patients wearing bimaxillary conventional dentures, for at least one year, were recruited. The patients were then assigned to either two treatment groups: mandibular overdentures supported by two implants with bar-clip system and a maxillary conventional denture (n = 25), and new maxillary and mandibular conventional complete dentures (n = 25). Masticatory efficiency and oral health-related quality of life were assessed before and 3 months after denture insertion. The Brazilian version of OHIP-Edent questionnaire was used to assess the oral health-related quality of life. Masticatory efficiency was evaluated with chewing capsules through a colorimetric method. The results revealed fewer oral health–related quality of life problems in patients wearing mandibular two-implant overdentures compared to the conventional dentures group. In addition, the implant overdenture group presented statistically significant improvement in masticatory efficiency (p = 0.001). There was no correlation between masticatory efficiency and OHIP in the implant group (p > 0.05), however a correlation was found in the conventional denture group (p < 0.05). Therefore, these short-term results suggest that mandibular overdenture retained by 2 implants with immediate loading combined with maxillary conventional dentures provide better masticatory efficiency and oral health–related quality of life than mandibular conventional dentures.

Leishmaniasis is one of the six major tropical diseases targeted by the World Health Organization. It is a life-threatening disease of medical, social and economic importance in endemic areas. No vaccine is yet available for human use, and chemotherapy presents several problems. Pentavalent antimonials have been the drugs of choice to treat the disease for more than six decades; however, they exhibit high toxicity and are not indicated for children, for pregnant or breastfeeding women or for chronically ill patients. Amphotericin B (AmpB) is a second-line drug, and although it has been increasingly used to treat visceral leishmaniasis (VL), its clinical use has been hampered due to its high toxicity. This review focuses on the development and in vivo usage of new delivery systems for AmpB that aim to decrease its toxicity without altering its therapeutic efficacy. These new formulations, when adjusted with regard to their production costs, may be considered new drug delivery systems that promise to improve the treatment of leishmaniasis, by reducing the side effects and the number of doses while permitting a satisfactory cost-benefit ratio.
