Abstract Introduction It is estimated that 6% of school-age children have Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), characterized by motor difficulties that restrict participation at home, in the community and at school. The Cognitive Orientation to Daily Occupational Performance Approach (CO-OP) is effective in improving the functional performance of these children, but there is little clinical data on variations in the response to the intervention. Objective To identify and describe the most relevant characteristics of children with DCD that influence their response to CO-OP. Method Case study conducted with four children with DCD who underwent CO-OP: the two who had the highest gain and the two who had the lowest gain with the intervention. The data obtained in this study were categorized and synthesized to compose a clinical description of the participants’ characteristics. Results Parents of children with better performance showed better parenting style. Unstructured observation of the researchers during the collections showed that the families of the children with greater progress attended the collections more often and were more engaged. Greater family support seems to provide children with more confidence, as well as increase motivation to achieve goals in therapy. Conclusion The support offered by parents is a relevant factor for the good performance of children with DCD in the intervention using the CO-OP. The clinical description of children with DCD assists in the reasoning during professional practice because it identifies characteristics that can influence progress in the intervention.

Resumo Introdução Estima-se que 6% das crianças em idade escolar apresentam Transtorno do Desenvolvimento da Coordenação (TDC), caracterizado por dificuldades motoras que restringem a participação em casa, na comunidade e na escola. A Cognitive Orientation to Daily Occupational Performance Approach (CO-OP) é efetiva para melhorar o desempenho funcional dessas crianças, mas há poucos dados clínicos sobre variações na resposta à intervenção. Objetivo Identificar e descrever as características mais relevantes de crianças com TDC que influenciam sua resposta à CO-OP. Método Estudo de caso conduzido com quatro crianças com TDC submetidas à CO-OP: as duas que obtiveram maior e menor ganho com a intervenção. Os dados obtidos no estudo foram categorizados e sintetizados para compor uma descrição clínica das características dos participantes. Resultados Os pais das crianças com melhor desempenho apresentaram melhor estilo parental. A observação não estruturada das pesquisadoras durante as coletas identificou que as famílias das crianças com maior progresso compareceram mais vezes às coletas e eram mais engajadas. Maior apoio familiar parece proporcionar mais confiança às crianças, além de aumentar a motivação para alcançar os objetivos em terapia. Conclusão O apoio oferecido pelos pais é fator relevante para o bom desempenho de crianças com TDC na intervenção usando a CO-OP. A descrição clínica de crianças com TDC auxilia o raciocínio durante a prática profissional por identificar características que podem influenciar o progresso na intervenção.

RESUMO O objetivo do presente trabalho foi produzir e caracterizar um biomaterial na forma de esferas de quitosana/ Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) Mosyakin & Clemants (mastruz) a fim de associar características positivas de ambos materiais, a quitosana com potencial osteoindutor e o mastruz capacidade de regeneração óssea, formando biomaterial a ser utilizado na formação e regeneração óssea. A planta foi coletada, identificada botanicamente e obtido extrato alcoólico bruto de Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) Mosyakin & Clemants (EAB). Para produção das esferas de quitosana e quitosana com EAB utilizou-se a técnica de Gelificação Ionotrópica. As esferas foram divididas em três grupos: um grupo de quitosana pura, outro com concentração menor de EAB e o terceiro com a maior concentração de EAB. Estas foram caracterizadas por Microscopia Óptica (MO), Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) e análise do Grau de Intumescimento (GI). A MO evidenciou nas superfícies externa e interna, esferas com limites definidos e com mudança de cor à medida que o percentual do EAB foi aumentado, tornando-se mais escuras. A MEV revelou, em esferas de maior concentração, quando comparado as de menor concentração: uma diminuição no tamanho e aumento da quantidade e da intercomunicação dos poros, além da alteração do formato geométrico tanto das esferas quanto dos seus poros. Na análise do Grau de intumescimento não houve diferenças significativas entre os grupos. Conclui-se que foi possível a produção de esferas de quitosana e quitosana/ Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) Mosyakin & Clemants (mastruz), que no grupo com maior percentual de EAB as amostras apresentaram-se mais escuras e com maior quantidade e intercomunicação dos poros e que embora tenha havido o intumescimento, não foi observada diferença significativa entre os grupos.

ABSTRACT The objective was to produce and characterize a biomaterial in the form of chitosan spheres/ Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) Mosyakin & Clemants (mastruz) in order to associate positive characteristics of both materials, chitosan with osteoinductive potential and the bone regeneration ability of mastruz, producing a biomaterial to use as bone former and regenarator. Plant specimens were collected, identified botanically and crude alcohol extract (CAE) were obtained. For the production of the chitosan and chitosan spheres with CAE, the Ionotrope Gellification technique was used. The spheres were divided into three groups: one example group of pure chitosan; a second example group with low CAE concentration and a third example group with a higher CAE concentration; and them characterized by Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and swelling degree (SD). OM showed on the external and internal surfaces, spheres with defined limits and with color changed as the percentage of CAE was increased, becoming darker. The SEM showed, in spheres with higher CAE concentration, in comparison with the ones with low CAE concentration: A decrease in size, increase in the quantity and intercommunication of the pores, and the alteration of the geometric shape of both the spheres and their pores. In the analysis of the swelling degree, there were no significant differences between the groups. It is possible to produce chitosan spheres / Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) Mosyakin & Clemants (mastruz) which in the group with the highest percentage of CAE the samples were darker and with higher amounts and intercommunication pores and that although there was swelling, no significant difference was observed between the groups.

RESUMO O presente estudo avaliou o potencial para redução do esforço amostral em estudos com ninfas de Ephemeroptera em igarapés amazônicos, no estado do Pará, Brasil, sem perder informações ecológicas (composição de espécies, abundância e riqueza), além de verificar se existe congruência entre diferentes níveis de resolução taxonômica (morfoespécie, gênero, família e grupo funcional). Grupos reduzidos de 15, 10 e cinco subamostras de um controle de 20 amostras de cada um dos 40 igarapés amostrados, foram comparados quanto a riqueza de táxons e abundância (ANOVA) e composição (Procrustes). A resolução taxonômica também foi avaliada através do Procrustes. A abundância (F(3, 156) = 25,426; p < 0,001) e riqueza (F(3, 156) = 13,866, p < 0,001) variaram significativamente entre os grupos de amostras, porém, os resultados tanto de riqueza quanto de abundância dos grupos 15-S foram estatisticamente similares aos de 20-S. O mesmo padrão foi encontrado para riqueza de espécies. A resolução taxonômica a nível de gênero obteve 99% de congruência com a de morfoespécie. Esses resultados indicam que a diminuição de 20 subamostras para 15, e a redução da identificação de morfoespécie para gênero não afetaria a significância das análises. A redução de cinco amostras por local de coleta poderia resultar em uma diminuição do esforço em campo e do material para ser processado em laboratório, reduzindo o tempo de triagem e identificação. Ainda, para reduzir tempo e recursos financeiros gastos para coleta e identificação dos organismos, a identificação apenas a nível genérico poderia minimizar erros de sub ou super estimativa no processamento dos resultados.

ABSTRACT The present study evaluated the potential for the reduction of sampling effort in studies of ephemeropteran nymphs in Brazilian Amazon streams, Pará State, Brazil, without the loss of ecological information (species composition, abundance, and richness), and the congruence of different levels of taxonomic resolution (morphospecies, genus, family and functional group). Test groups of 15, 10 and five subsamples were selected from the 20 subsamples collected per stream (40 streams sampled), and were compared in terms of their species richness and abundance (ANOVA), and composition (Procrustes). Taxonomic resolution was also analyzed in Procrustes. Species abundance (F(3, 156) = 25.426; p < 0.001) and richness (F(3, 156) = 13.866, p < 0.001) varied significantly among sample groups, while the results of the 15-S group were statistically similar, in both cases, to those of the 20-S group. A similar pattern was found for species composition. The genus-level taxonomic resolution produced results 99% similar to those found for the species-level data. The results indicate that the reduction in sampling effort from 20 to 15 subsamples per site and a genus-level taxonomic resolution would not affect the reliability of analyses significantly. A reduction of five samples per site would result in a decrease of effort in the field and the amount of material to be processed, reducing laboratory time. In addition to a reduction in the time and resources needed to identify specimens, the adoption of a genus-level taxonomic resolution could help minimize errors of under- or over-estimation in the processing of the results.

ABSTRACTThis study reviewed the data on the Brazilian Ephemeroptera, based on the studies published before July, 2013, estimated the number of species still to be described, and identified which regions of the country have been the subject of least research. More than half the species are known from the description of only one developmental stage, with imagoes being described more frequently than nymphs. The Brazilian Northeast is the region with the weakest database. Body size affected description rates, with a strong tendency for the larger species to be described first. The estimated number of unknown Brazilian species was accentuated by the fact that so few species have been described so far. The steep slope of the asymptote and the considerable confidence interval of the estimate reinforce the conclusion that a large number of species are still to be described. This emphasizes the need for investments in the training of specialists in systematics and ecology for all regions of Brazil to correct these deficiencies, given the role of published papers as a primary source of information, and the fundamental importance of taxonomic knowledge for the development of effective measures for the conservation of ephemeropteran and the aquatic ecosystems they depend on.
