ABSTRACT: This study evaluated factors associated with the pre-slaughter handling of pigs in a commercial slaughterhouse located in Minas Gerais and evaluated the influence of these factors on the initial pH and temperature of the carcasses. In all, 4449 carcasses were evaluated. The factors evaluated were transport distance, transport duration, loading density, fasting duration, resting duration, average weight of the animals, average temperature in the resting area, and maximum temperature in the resting area. The effects of these factors on the initial (i.e., at 45 minutes after slaughter) temperature and pH (pH45) were measured. The pH45 values were used to determine the occurrence of PSE; the carcasses were classified as PSE when they presented a pH45 < 5.90. Results showed that animals fasted for more than 24 hours were more likely to result in PSE meat (1.41 times more likely), as did animals that were exposed to an average temperature above 24 °C (1.52 times more likely). Except for the average weight of the animals, which did not affect the initial temperature values, all other pre-slaughter factors have influenced both pH45 and the initial temperature values, and the difference of fasting duration and the temperature in the resting area increase the incidence of PSE meat.

RESUMO: O estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar fatores associados ao manejo pré-abate de suínos em um abatedouro comercial localizado em Minas Gerais e sua influência sobre o pH inicial e temperatura das carcaças. Ao todo, foram avaliadas 4449 carcaças. Os fatores considerados na avaliação foram: distância de transporte, tempo de transporte, densidade da carga, tempo de jejum, tempo de descanso, peso médio dos animais, temperatura média na área de descanso e temperatura máxima na área de descanso. Para avaliar os efeitos desses fatores foram mensurados a temperatura e o pH inicial aos 45 minutos (pH45). Os valores de pH45 foram considerados para determinar o índice de predisposição para ocorrência de PSE já que as carcaças foram classificadas como PSE quando apresentaram valor de pH45 < 5,90. Os resultados encontrados mostraram que os animais com tempo de jejum acima de 24 horas, apresentaram maior probabilidade para ocorrência de carne PSE (1,41 vezes), assim como, aqueles que foram expostos a temperatura média acima de 24 °C na área de descanso com probabilidade de 1,52 vezes. Em relação a temperatura inicial e pH45, com exceção do peso médio dos animais, os demais fatores pré-abate analisados influenciaram os valores destes parâmetros, sendo que o tempo de jejum dos animais e a temperatura média da área de descanso promoveram aumento na incidência de carne PSE.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar os fatores relacionados a maciez da carne de frangos criados em sistema alternativo. Para o experimento foi avaliado a força de cisalhamento, diâmetro das fibras musculares do peito e da coxa, conteúdo de tecido conjuntivo através de histologia e teor de colágeno solúvel e total. O experimento foi executado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado (DIC) com uso de duas linhagens (Pescoço Pelado e Paraíso Pedrês) de ambos os sexos (macho e fêmea) e abatidos em quatro idades (65, 75, 85 e 95 dias), criados em sistema alternativo, sendo utilizado um total de 192 aves. Para força de cisalhamento (FC), ocorreu aumento nos valores em ambos os cortes em função da idade de abate e houve interação entre linhagem e sexo, com as maiores médias para os machos da linhagem Pescoço Pelado e diferença entre sexo para Paraíso Pedrês. A idade de abate influenciou o diâmetro das fibras musculares e o conteúdo de tecido conjuntivo do peito e da coxa, havendo aumento linear destes parâmetros em função da idade ao abate. O sexo não afetou o diâmetro das fibras musculares da coxa, enquanto na linhagem Paraíso Pedrês foram verificadas maiores médias em relação à Pescoço Pelado. A análise de componentes principais demonstrou a relação entre a força de cisalhamento e as demais variáveis analisadas. Assim, o aumento do diâmetro das fibras musculares do peito e da coxa também está relacionado à redução da maciez da carne de frangos caipiras, conjuntamente com o aumento da quantidade de tecido conjuntivo, teor de colágeno total e redução de sua solubilidade.

ABSTRACT: This study assessed whether the meat tenderness of broilers raised in a free-range system varies by sex, lineage, and age at the time of slaughter. Physicochemical parameters were measured to adequately assess breast and thigh muscle morphometry, including shear force (SF), muscle fibre diameter (MD), histological connective tissue (HCT) content, and total and soluble collagen contents (TCC and SCC, respectively). The experiment was conducted with a completely randomized design using two lineages (Pescoço Pelado and Paraíso Pedrês), with specimens of both sexes raised in a free-range system. Randomly selected broilers were slaughtered at 65, 75, 85, and 95 days old. A total of 192 birds were analysed. SF values correlated positively with age. The highest SF values were measured in thighs of the Pescoço Pelado lineage. Age also showed a positive correlation with MD and HCT content of the breast regardless of lineage. Gender did not have any significant correlation with physical parameters; although, higher values were measured in thighs of the Paraíso Pedrês than in those of the Pescoço Pelado lineage. There were no significant differences among treatments regarding the SCC and TCC of thighs and breasts. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed relationships between SF and the rest of the measured attributes. PCA showed that age was positively correlated with the SF, MD, and HCT content of thighs and breasts. In contrast, SCC and TCC had negative correlations. The greatest breast and thigh MD values were associated with the least tender meat. Thus, age at the time of slaughter proved to be the most significant parameter impacting the physical characteristics of muscle morphometry and meat tenderness of breasts and thighs of broilers raised in a free-range system.

RESUMO: A esporotricose é uma das micoses de maior relevância na medicina veterinária, tanto pela sua gravidade, seu potencial zoonótico e seu difícil tratamento. Sabe-se que o aspecto imunológico do gato representa um fator prognóstico determinante. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia do imunomodulador timomodulina como adjuvante a terapia antifúngica, itraconazol (ITL) com iodeto de potássio (KI), em gatos com esporotricose disseminada. Trinta e um gatos (n=31) com esporotricose cutânea disseminada foram segregados em dois grupos, o grupo 1 (G1) (n=16) tratado com ITL, KI associada à timomodulina e o grupo 2 (G2) (n=15) apenas ITL e KI. Foi avaliada a resposta clínica aos diferentes tratamentos, levando em consideração a taxa de sobrevivência, tempo de resposta das lesões e progressão do escore de condição corporal. O G1 apresentou taxa de sobrevivência de quase 100% (93,6%), aproximadamente o dobro do encontrado no G2 (53%). Mais que isso, o G1 demonstrou significativamente melhor prognóstico, aprimoramento do escore de condição corporal e menor tempo para remissão dos sinais clínicos extracutâneos (p<0,02). Sendo assim, a associação da timomodulina ao ITL e KI melhora o prognóstico de gatos com esporotricose cutânea disseminada.

ABSTRACT: Feline sporotrichosis is a relevant mycose in veterinary medicine due to its severity and zoonotic potential and the fact that it can be difficult to treat. The immune status of the animal exerts influence on the prognosis of the disease and determines its clinical outcome. This study evaluated the efficacy of the immunomodulatory thymomodulin as an adjunct to antifungal therapy in cats with disseminated sporotrichosis; thymomodulin was used in association with itraconazole (ITL) and potassium iodide (KI) to treat this fungal disease in the feline patient. Thirty-one cats (n=31) diagnosed with disseminated cutaneous sporotrichosis were divided into two groups as follows: Group 1 (G1) (n=16), which included those animals that were treated with thymomodulin in association with ITL and KI, and Group 2 (G2) (n=15) which had pacientsthat received ITL and KI only. The response to different treatment modalities was assessed, considering the survival rate, time frame for the lesions to respond to therapy, and clinical improvement or deterioration according to a body condition score system. Animals from G1 had a survival rate of nearly 100% (93.6%) that was approximately twice higher than the survival rate of those animals from G2 (53%). Moreover, patients from G1 had a significantly better prognosis, improved body condition, and shorter time for remission of the extra cutaneous clinical signs (p<0.02). Our findings showed that the association of thymomodulin with ITL and KI improves the prognosis of cats with disseminated cutaneous sporotrichosis.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the determinant profitability indexes of typical dairy farms located in Brazil. The empirical sample included detailed technical and financial information of 61 Brazilian dairy farms across a longitudinal data set (10 years). Numerous technical and economic indexes were estimated, and Pearson’s correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the relationship between each index and profitability. After selecting the significant indexes, regression equations were generated to determine the relationship between each index and profitability. The results of the analysis revealed significant interactions between different combinations of technical and financial indexes. Milk production per lactating cow and area were the indexes most positively correlated with profitability. In contrast, total unit cost in relation to the price of milk, total operating cost in relation to total revenues, and total unit operating cost in relation to the price of milk were the indexes most negatively correlated with profitability. Overall, these results indicate that profits could significantly increase if dairy farm production is conducted with more intensive use of inputs and production factors and better combinations of inputs and outputs.

Resumo Este estudo verificou a frequência de oocistos de Cryptosporidium spp. em fezes de cães e gatos em cinco municípios da região sul do Rio Grande do Sul e fatores de risco associados à infecção. Amostras de fezes de 110 cães e 18 gatos foram coradas pelo método de auramina. No momento da coleta de fezes aplicou-se um questionário aos tutores dos animais com questões semiabertas e os dados foram submetidos à análise estatística. A frequência verdadeira de oocistos de Cryptosporidium spp. foi de 24,63% (27 cães e 2 gatos). Apenas quatro amostras de fezes caninas eram diarreicas e todas sem oocistos. As variáveis que representaram fatores de risco para a infecção foram: alimentos de preparo caseiro, água não tratada, circulação dos animais em terreno gramíneo e convivência com outros animais, principalmente bovinos. Os resultados sugerem que a frequência de cães parasitados por Cryptosporidium spp. é relevante, reforçando o caráter assintomático da infeção. Destaca-se a importância da adoção de medidas de controle, particularmente das variáveis que representaram fatores de risco à infecção.

Abstract This study investigated the frequency of oocysts of Cryptosporidium spp. in feces from dogs and cats in five municipalities in the southern region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The risk factors associated with infection were also investigated. Feces samples from 110 dogs and 18 cats were stained using the auramine method. At the time of feces sampling, a questionnaire with semi-open-ended questions was applied to the animal guardians and all data obtained underwent statistical analysis. The real frequency of oocysts of Cryptosporidium spp. was 24.63% (27 dogs and two cats). Only four samples of dog feces were diarrheic and no presence of oocysts was observed in any of them. Variables that represented risk factors for infection were: homemade food, untreated water, circulation of animals on grassy terrain and living in the same environment as other animals (cattle). The results made it possible to inferring that within the population studied, the frequency of parasitism due to Cryptosporidium spp. in dogs was relevant and emphasize the asymptomatic nature of this infection. The adopting control measures are highlighted, particularly in relation to variables that represent risk factors for this infection.

RESUMO: Com o objetivo de testar diferentes formas de controle de Senecio madagascariensis foram realizados três experimentos. No primeiro, 40 ovinos foram colocados em uma área de quatro hectares por 90 dias, com infestação média e alta por S. madagascariensis. A área após este período foi dessecada com glifosato (Roundup®) e semeada com Lotus corniculatus L. (cornichão), Trifolium repens (trevo branco), Medicago sativa (alfafa) e Festuca arundinacea Schreb. (festuca) por plantio direto. Os ovinos, após oito meses, retornaram a área por mais 90 dias. O segundo experimento foi realizado com 10 ovinos em pastejo por 30 dias com 60 dias de descanso em três áreas de 0,5 hectares cada uma, com infestação baixa, média e alta por S. madagascariensis. O terceiro experimento foi realizado utilizando-se dessecação, aração e plantio de pastagens (leguminosas e gramíneas) por três vezes consecutivas, sem utilização de ovinos em uma área invadida pela planta. Para o controle de S. brasiliensis e outras espécies do gênero, um quarto experimento foi realizado em uma propriedade rural com histórico de intoxicação por Senecio spp. em bovinos. Foram utilizados 86 ovinos, que permaneceram em uma área de 90 hectares durante um ano. Os resultados destes experimentos demonstraram que os ovinos consomem S. madagascariensis e diminuem a quantidade de planta em áreas infestadas. Por outro lado, evidenciou-se também que S. madagascariensis para ser controlado de forma eficiente necessita de pastejo contínuo com pelo menos quatro ovinos por ha. As práticas como dessecação com herbicidas, aração e plantio de pastagem podem auxiliar na eliminação da planta a longo prazo. Em áreas de infestação por S. brasiliensis a roçagem pode ser uma prática eficiente, principalmente pelo porte alto da planta, pois facilita o consumo pelos ovinos.

ABSTRACT: In order to test different technics to control Senecio madagascariensis, three experiments were carried out. In the first, 40 sheep were placed in an area of four hectares for 90 days, with medium/high levels of infestation by the plant. The area after this period was desiccated with glyphosate (Roundup®) and seeded with Lotus corniculatus L., Trifolium repens, Medicago sativa and Festuca arundinacea Schreb. by direct seeding. After eight months, sheep returned to the area for another 90 days. The second experiment was conducted with 10 sheep grazing for 30 days and 60 days’ rest, in three areas of 0.5 hectares each, with low, medium and high levels of S. madagascariensis infestation. The third experiment was carried out using drying, plowing and cultivated pasture (legumes and grasses) for three consecutive times without the use of sheep in an area infested by the plant. For the control of S. brasiliensis and other species of the genus, a fourth experiment was performed on a farm with history of intoxication by Senecio spp. in cattle. Eighty-six sheep were used in an area of 90 hectares for a year. The results of these experiments demonstrated that sheep consume and decrease the amount of S. madagascariensis in infested areas. Furthermore, it also indicated that S. madagascariensis to be efficiently controlled requires continuous grazing with at least four sheep per hectare. Practices as drying the pastures with herbicides, tillage and pasture planting can help eliminate the plant in long-term plan. In areas with S. brasiliensis infestation mowing can be an effective practice, mainly due to the high size of the plant, since it facilitates consumption by sheep.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar os fatores socioeconômicos relacionados com a decisão de compra de carne com certificação de origem, além de levantar os perfis de percepção e de atitude dos consumidores de carne bovina, em Uberlândia, MG. Foi realizada a descrição das variáveis e construído um modelo múltiplo Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) de regressão logística, para testar as possíveis associações entre as características socioeconômicas dos consumidores e os principais atributos da carne que influenciam a decisão sobre sua compra. As informações foram levantadas por meio de entrevistas com 213 consumidores, de abril a maio de 2012. A presença do carimbo do serviço de inspeção federal (SIF) ou estadual é o atributo que mais influencia a decisão de compra dos consumidores. A maioria dos entrevistados já ouviu falar sobre rastreabilidade bovina. Dentre estes, a maior parte está disposta a pagar mais pela carne com certificação de origem. Apesar disso, muitos consideram que o aumento do preço da carne é uma desvantagem da rastreabilidade. Consumidores com maior grau de escolaridade e renda apresentaram melhor conhecimento sobre este tipo de certificação, sendo esses fatores os de grande influência sobre a aceitação dos consumidores em pagar mais caro pela carne bovina rastreada.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to verify which socioeconomic factors are related to the decision to purchase meat with certification of origin, as well as raising the profile of perception and attitude of consumers of beef in Uberlândia/MG. We performed a description of the variables and built Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) logistic regression model to identify possible associations between the partner-economic characteristics of the consumers and the main attributes of the meat that influence the decision for its purchase. The information had been raised by interviews with 213 consumers of April the May of 2012. The presence of the seal from the Federal Inspection Service (S.I.F) or the State Inspection Service is the attribute that more influences in the decision to purchase of the consumers. Most respondents have already heard about bovine traceability. Among these, most would be willing to pay more for meat with certification of origin. Although, considering that there are disavantages associated with traceability, especially in relation to the increase in the price of meat. Consumers with higher education and income were more knowledgeable about this type of certification, and these factors are of great influence on the acceptability of consumers to pay more for traced beef.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a prevalência de anticorpos IgG anti- Ehrlichia canis e anti- Babesia vogeli em cães e correlacionar com a prevalência e fatores de risco para avaliar a relação do estado sorológico com os achados hematológicos. Amostras de sangue de cães coletadas de setembro de 2011 a março de 2012, no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Federal de Lavras, Brasil, foram analisadas usando o teste de reação de imunofluorescência indireta (RIFI). Do total de amostras de soro de 160 cães, 23,7% (38 cães; IC95 17,7% - 30,7%) foram soropositivos para E. canis, 40,0% (64 cães; IC95 40,0% - 59,2%) para B. vogeli, e 5,6% (9 cães) para os dois hemoparasitas. Nenhuma das variáveis epidemiológicas mostrou associação significativa (P> 0,05) com a soropositividade para E. canis e B. vogeli. Cães soropositivos para E. canis mostraram valores médios mais baixos para hematócrito (P<0,05). No entanto, para o eritrograma, a contagem de plaquetas, o leucograma e os sinais clínicos, nenhuma diferença significativa (P> 0,05) foi observada entre cães soropositivos e soronegativos para E. canis ou para B. vogeli. Os resultados sorológicos deste estudo sugerem que a infecção por E. canis e B. vogeli é endêmica na população canina em questão, com uma prevalência da fase subclínica (assintomática) em cães soropositivos para erliquiose ou babesiose.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of anti-Ehrlichia canis and anti-Babesia vogeli IgG antibodies in dogs and correlate this prevalence with risk factors to evaluate the relation of serological status to hematological findings. Blood samples of dogs attended from September 2011 to March 2012 at the veterinary hospital of the Federal University of Lavras, Brazil, were analyzed using an indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT). Of the total 160 dog serum samples, 23.7% (38 dogs; CI95 17.7% - 30.7%) were seropositive for E. canis, 40.0% (64 dogs; CI95 40.0% - 59.2%) for B. vogeli, and 5.6% (9 dogs) for both hemoparasites. None of the epidemiological variables showed a significant association (P>0.05) with seropositivity to E. canis and B. vogeli. Dogs seropositive for E. canis showed lower values for hematocrit (P<0.05). However, for the erythrogram, the platelet count, the leukogram and clinical signs, no significant difference (P>0.05) was observed between dogs that were seropositive and seronegative for E. canis or for B. vogeli. Serological results suggest that infection with E. canis and B. vogeli is endemic in the canine population in question, with a prevalence of the subclinical phase (asymptomatic) in dogs that are seropositive for ehrlichiosis or babesiosis.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o trânsito de aves, sua fiscalização e o surgimento de enfermidades, abordando questões referentes ao sistema do Programa Nacional de Sanidade Avícola e suas determinações legais. Dessa forma, compilaram-se dados do serviço oficial sobre o trânsito dos animais e a ocorrência de doenças, realizando-se também uma avaliação da legislação vigente entre 2008 e 2012, no estado do Sergipe. Observou-se no período averiguado um intenso trânsito de aves em quase toda a totalidade dos municípios, principalmente entre granjas que alojam pequenas quantidades de aves (5.000 a 15.000), e 64% do total do transporte de aves ocorreu entre municípios do Estado. Os estados fornecedores de aves para Sergipe foram sobretudo Pernambuco (49,87%), Bahia (20,85%), Minas Gerais (5,94%), Paraíba (5,16%) e Goiás (5,05%). O número de guias de trânsito emitidas aponta um crescimento do trânsito ao longo dos anos. Verificaram-se que três municípios (Estância, São Cristóvão e Itaporanga d'Ajuda), dos seis acometidos por enfermidades, são aqueles responsáveis por grande parte do trânsito realizado. O estudo mostrou que para os municípios sergipanos, nos quais acontece maior fluxo de comercialização avícola, seriam indicadas mais das ações do Programa Estadual de Sanidade Avícola, com a finalidade de registrar maior número de notificações de enfermidades e, consequentemente, exercer ações de vigilância. Assim, quanto ao trânsito animal, recomendam-se a adoção de um mapeamento das regiões de risco sanitário para as enfermidades de aves e a realização de estudos sobre a caracterização epidemiológica dos municípios de Sergipe.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to assess the transit of poultry, as well as the inspection on the outbreak of diseases, by addressing the issues concerning the system of the National Program on Poultry Sanity and its legal resolutions. The data on the animal transportation and the occurrence of the diseases were collected from the official services. A legislation-based assessment was also carried out for the period from 2008 to 2012 in the state of Sergipe, Brazil. Results showed an intense transit of poultry in just about all towns of the state in the period under study, especially in chicken farms where less number of poultry is bred: from 5,000 to 15,000. Besides, 64% of poultry transportation was found to be intermunicipal. The state of Sergipe has received poultry particularly from the states of Pernambuco (49.87%), Bahia (20.85%), Minas Gerais (5.94%), Paraíba (5.16%), and Goiás (5.05%). The number of transit indicates an increase in transit over the years. In addition, three of six municipalities which saw these diseases (Estância, São Cristóvão and Itaporanga d'Ajuda) are responsible for a great part of the poultry transit. Results also showed that the majority of activities of the State Program on Poultry Sanity would be carried out in the municipalities where a larger poultry marketing flow takes place, thereby seeking to record a greater number of notifications on the diseases and, then, carry out the surveillance activities. Therefore, regarding the poultry transit, it is recommended to do a mapping of the risk regions for poultry diseases, as well as studies about the epidemiological characterization of the municipalities of the state of Sergipe.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se verificar a influência dos fatores socioeconômicos na disposição de 407 consumidores em hipermercados do município de Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, em adquirir carne bovina com certificação de origem e verificar as características inerentes ao produto que auxiliam o consumidor no momento da compra, considerando o seu conhecimento prévio sobre rastreabilidade e certificação de origem. Foi realizada uma análise descritiva de todas as variáveis e, posteriormente, realizada a análise univariada pelo teste do qui-quadrado ou exato de Fischer. As variáveis foram adicionadas no modelo múltiplo da regressão logística Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) e para todas as variáveis presentes no modelo final (p ≤ 0,05) foi calculado o risco por meio da odds ratio (OR) ajustada a um intervalo de confiança de 95%. Todos os fatores socioeconômicos analisados (sexo, idade, renda e escolaridade) influenciaram na disposição de consumidores em adquirir carne bovina com certificação de origem. Os atributos intrínsecos mais importantes na tomada de decisão no momento da compra da carne foram cor, maciez, odor e a pouca quantidade de gordura; enquanto que os atributos extrínsecos foram preço, selo de qualidade e carimbo do SIF. A maioria dos consumidores conhece o conceito correto de rastreabilidade e acreditam que o maior benefício da carne rastreada é oferecer mais segurança e evitar riscos de doenças transmitidas pelos alimentos; e a desvantagem é ser um produto mais caro do que o convencional.

ABSTRACT: The present study aimed to verify the influence of socioeconomic factors in the provision of 407 consumers in supermarkets in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in purchasing beef with certification of origin and to verify the inherent characteristics of the product that help the consumer at the time of purchase, considering their prior knowledge about traceability and certification of origin. A descriptive analysis of all variables was performed and a univariate analysis was subsequently conducted by chi-square test. The variables were added in the multiple logistic regression model Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE), and for all variables in the final model (p ≤ 0.05) the risk was calculated by the adjusted odds ratio (OR) to a range of 95% confidence. All socioeconomic factors examined (gender, age, income and education) influence the willingness of consumers to purchase beef with certification of origin. The most important intrinsic attributes in decision making when buying meat were the color, softness, odor and little amount of fat, whereas the extrinsic attributes were price, quality seal and stamp of the SIF. Most of the consumers know the correct concept of traceability and believe that the greatest benefit of the traced meat is to be safer and to avoid the risk of foodborne illness; and the disadvantage is to be a more expensive product than the conventional.

RESUMO: A fiscalização de profissionais habilitados é uma importante ação do Programa Nacional de Controle e Erradicação da Brucelose e Tuberculose Animal (PNCEBT). Com este trabalho, buscou-se reunir informações das fiscalizações relativas à habilitação de médicos veterinários privados no estado do Espírito Santo. Os dados deste estudo foram obtidos mediante a compilação dos relatórios de 63 fiscalizações in loco entre 2008 e 2011. Por meio dos achados deste estudo, observou-se que todos os profissionais fiscalizados estão regularmente inscritos no CRMV-ES, todavia foram verificadas pendências quanto ao cadastro para realizar vacinações contra brucelose. Observou-se que a maior parte dos profissionais mantém a infraestrutura e os equipamentos para a realização de exames de brucelose e tuberculose. A maioria adota os modelos oficiais de atestados, contudo há um expressivo atraso no envio dos relatórios de ações, e muitos profissionais relataram falta de demandas para certificação de propriedades.

ABSTRACT: The inspection of qualified professionals is an important action of the National Programme for Control and Eradication of Animal Brucellosis and Tuberculosis (PNCEBT). The data for this study were obtained by compiling reports of 63 inspections in loco of qualified private veterinarians between 2008 and 2011 in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. Through the findings of this study, it was observed that all inspected professionals are regularly registered in the CRMV-ES, nevertheless it was found pending issues regarding the registration to conduct vaccinations against brucellosis. It was observed that most professionals keep the infrastructure and equipment for conducting tuberculosis and brucellosis tests. The majority adopts the official models of certification, however there is a significant delay in sending reports of actions, and many professionals reported a lack of demand for certification of properties.

Objetivou-se com este estudo estimar índices de desempenho zootécnico e econômico de referência, analisar a influência dos tipos de mão de obra sobre a rentabilidade da atividade e identificar os componentes que exerceram maiores representatividades sobre o custo total e operacional efetivo. Foram analisados 38 índices de tamanho, zootécnico e econômico de 61 sistemas de produção de leite, localizados em Minas Gerais e Rio de Janeiro, agrupados em função do tipo de mão de obra. Os dados foram coletados durante o período de janeiro de 2002 a dezembro de 2011. Os resultados foram comparados pelo teste de ANOVA (distribuição normal), complementado pelo teste LSD, e pelo teste de Kruskal-Wallis (distribuição não normal), também complementado pelo teste LSD. Índices de medição de desempenho de referências devem ser considerados, levando-se em conta os fatores que sejam comuns aos sistemas de produção. O tipo de mão de obra não parece determinar a eficiência econômica do sistema de produção. Os itens componentes do custo total e operacional efetivo que exerceram maiores representatividades foram, em ordem decrescente, alimentação e mão de obra, para os grupos mão de obra contratada e mista, e alimentação e despesas diversas, para o grupo mão de obra familiar.

The objective of this research was to estimate reference zootechnical and economic performance indices, evaluate the influence of different types of labor on the technical and economic results and identify the components that had greater representativeness on the total and effective operational cost of dairy farms. We analyzed 38 size, zootechnical, and economic indicators of 61 milk production systems, grouped according to the type of labor. The data were collected during January 2002 to December 2011 period. The results were compared by ANOVA test (normal distribution), complemented by LSD test, and Kruskal-Wallis test (non-normal distribution), also complemented by LSD test. Reference performance indices should be considered, taking into account the factors that are common to dairy farms. The type of labor does not seem to determine the economic efficiency of the dairy production system. The items of total and effective operational cost that had greater representativeness were, in descending order, feeding and labor to hired and mixed labor groups, and feeding and various expenses to family labor.

Objetivou-se realizar o levantamento das não conformidades encontradas durante as auditorias oficiais do Sistema Brasileiro de Identificação e Certificação de Origem Bovina e Bubalina (SISBOV) em Minas Gerais, entre 2009 e 2010. Na pesquisa qualitativa foram coletados dados referentes às principais não conformidades encontradas que levaram à suspensão ou cancelamento da certificação do estabelecimento rural aprovado no SISBOV (ERAS). Em 2009 foram realizadas 484 auditorias, sendo que 141 foram consideradas não aptas para inclusão na Lista Traces. Em 2010 foram realizadas 310 auditorias em ERAS, sendo que 55 tiveram resultado negativo. O conjunto de dados analisados foi obtido em uma amostra de 64 relatórios não conformes no ano de 2009 e de 27 relatórios não conformes em 2010. Em 2009 foram constatadas 168 não conformidades, sendo que as principais foram: erro no preenchimento das Planilhas de Identificação e no preenchimento dos Comunicados de Entrada e checagem do rebanho incorreta. Em 2010 foram encontradas 58 não conformidades, sendo que as principais foram: erro no preenchimento das Planilhas de Identificação, no preenchimento dos Comunicados de Entrada e no preenchimento dos Comunicados de Saída. Conclui-se que as principais não conformidades encontradas se devem ao preenchimento incorreto de documentos. Tais erros podem ser evitados, desde que certificadoras e produtores deem mais atenção e maior importância ao preenchimento da documentação.

The objective of this research was survey the non-compliances found during the official audits of the Brazilian Beef and Buffalo Identification and certification System (SISBOV) in Minas Gerais, Brazil, between 2009 and 2010. In the qualitative research, data concerning the main non-compliances found in these reports were collected, which led to the suspension or cancellation of the SISBOV approved rural enterprise certification (ERAS). In 2009, 484 audits were conducted, 141 being considered unsuitable for being included in the in Traces list. In 2010, 310 ERAS audits were performed and 55 of them had a negative result. The data set analysed was obtained from a sample of 64 non-compliance reports in the year 2009 and 27 non-compliance reports in 2010. In 2009 there were found 168 non-compliances, the main ones being: mistakes in filling in the Identification Spreadsheets and the Entrance Reports; and incorrect herd checking. In 2010, 58 noncompliances were found, the main ones being: mistakes in filling in the Identification Spreadsheets, Entrance and Exit Reports. It is concluded that the main non-compliances found are due to the incorrect filling of documents. Such mistakes can be avoided, provided that certifying entities and breeders pay more attention and give more importance to filing documents.

Neste estudo, objetivou-se avaliar o custo da implantação e utilização de dois métodos de identificação de bovinos, o do brinco auricular convencional e o da arruela auricular eletrônica, além de discutir as vantagens e limitações de cada um. Foram anotadas todas as despesas operacionais referentes à identificação e, dentro de cada método, foram mensurados os tempos de contenção do animal, de implantação do identificador, de leitura do brinco, de digitação e de transferência de dados. O custo da identificação da arruela auricular eletrônica foi mais elevado, principalmente em função da aquisição dos equipamentos e dispositivos de identificação. Entretanto, verificou-se maior confiabilidade das informações registradas, já que o brinco auricular convencional, apesar do menor custo, apresentou erros na transcrição dos dados. Assim, cabe a cada produtor e, ou, técnico definir qual deve ser o método de identificação adequado ao seu sistema de produção, considerando não apenas os aspectos financeiros, mas também as limitações e benefícios de cada um.

This study aimed to evaluate the cost of the implantation of two methods of cattle identification, namely conventional earring and electronic ear tag, in addition to discussing both the advantages and limitations of each of them. All the operational expenses concerning to the identification were recorded and, for each method, the times of holding of the animal, the implantation of the identifier, the earring reading, typing and data transfer were surveyed. The cost of the identification by using the electronic tag was the highest, mainly the purchase of the equipment and identification device. Nevertheless, there was increased reliability of the recorded information, since the conventional earring in spite of having lower cost, induced errors in data transcription. Therefore, it is up to the farmers to decide which method should be suitable for their production system, taking into account not only financial issues but also the limitations and benefits of each method.

Produtores de leite de Lavras, Passos e Divinópolis, MG, foram entrevistados com objetivo de avaliar sua percepção e atitude no controle do Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. A análise da correlação multivariada entre as variáveis foi feita através de componentes principais (ACP). A percepção e atitude sobre o R. (B.) microplus foram semelhantes entre os produtores, sendo que a maioria deles não tem o conhecimento básico sobre a biologia e o controle desse carrapato, aplicando os produtos carrapaticidas por meio de bomba costal, e sem critérios técnicos definidos. Alguns resultados obtidos foram: I. correlação negativa entre escolaridade e frequência de aplicação de carrapaticidas bovinos; II. correlação positiva entre produção de leite, qualidade do equipamento para aplicação carrapaticida e nível tecnológico da fazenda; III. propriedades com maior produção e tecnificação tenderam a manter o intervalo de aplicação carrapaticida constante ao longo do ano. Após aplicação da ACP foi observada correlação positiva entre escolaridade, nível tecnológico da fazenda e percepção sobre o R. (B.) microplus, porém, sem correlação com a atitude no controle deste carrapato. Concluiu-se que o nível tecnológico e a escolaridade melhoram a percepção dos produtores sobre a biologia do carrapato R. (B.) microplus, mas não alcança efetivos na utilização do controle de forma mais racional.

Milk producers in Lavras, Passos and Divinópolis, Minas Gerais, were interviewed with the aim of evaluating their perceptions and attitudes regarding control over Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Multivariate correlation between the variables was done by means of principal component analysis. The producers' perceptions and attitudes regarding R. (B.) microplus were similar: most of them did not have any basic knowledge of tick biology or control, and they applied acaricide products through backpack spraying, without any defined technical criteria. Some of the results obtained were: I. a negative correlation between schooling level and the frequency of spraying cattle with acaricides; II. a positive correlation between milk production, quality of equipment for acaricide application and technological level of the farm; III. farm properties with greater production and technification tended to keep the intervals between acaricide applications constant over the course of the year. After applying principal component analysis, a positive correlation was observed between schooling level, technological level of the farm and perceptions regarding R. (B.) microplus, but without any correlation with attitudes towards controlling this tick. It was concluded that higher technological level and schooling level improved the producers' perceptions relating to the biology of the tick R. (B.) microplus, but did not achieve effectiveness with regard to using controls more rationally.
