Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition of wood particles (control and treated), and the effects of thermal modification and adhesive levels on the wettability and biological resistance of particleboards made of sugarcane residue and bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper). Therefore, 75% bamboo particles and 25% sugarcane residue (bagasse) were used for producing the particleboards. The particles were treated at 220 °C for 3h35min. Urea formaldehyde (UF) adhesive was used in three solid contents (10%, 12% and 14%) based on the dry mass of the particles. The mat was cold pre-consolidated (pressure of 0,5 MPa for 5 min) and after hot consolidated (3,45 MPa, 180 ºC, 10 min). Water and ethylene glycol and two measurement times were used to measure the contact angle. Gloeophyllum trabeum and Rhodonia placenta (brown rot) and Trametes versicolor (white rot) fungi were used for the biological resistance test. There was a change in the chemical composition of the treated particles such as a reduction in the levels of lignin (bagasse and bamboo), total extracts and holocellulose (bagasse). The thermal treatment increased the final contact angles obtained with water. The particleboard surfaces were classified as non-wettable and partially wettable to the tested solvents. The thermal treatment provided biological resistance improvements in the particleboards to the tested fungi, being classified as very resistant to Rhodonia placenta, resistant to very resistant to Gloeophyllum trabeum, and moderate to resistant to Trametes versicolor.

ABSTRACT: Polymer coatings are used to control the rate of release of plant available nutrients from fertilizers as well as to reduce nutrient losses such as ammonia (NH3) volatilization. Although the literature presents several examples of materials used to coat urea, little is known about nitrogen (N) release properties such as the mechanism involved and phenomena (e.g., pore opening) in the polymer coating. Thus, this study investigated urea release from polyurethane (PU) derived from two renewable raw materials (castor oil and soybean oil), to explain how the oil structure and coating microstructure influence release and urea-N dynamics in soil. The results demonstrated that the profile of urea release and the urea-N mineralization in the soil could be controlled by altering the thickness of the coating on the urea granules. Coating by eco-friendly polymer was efficient in controlling urea release in soil to reduce volatilization of ammonia and increase the availability of N in the soil.

RESUMO A modificação térmica de partículas de painéis constituídos de resíduos agroflorestais e industriais pode incorporar melhorias na estabilidade dimensional (variação na espessura) e reduzir a utilização de produtos químicos, que podem onerar o processo ou serem nocivos ao homem e ao meio ambiente. Assim, o objetivo da pesquisa foi avaliar o efeito da modificação térmica nas propriedades físico-mecânicas e no perfil de densidade de painéis constituídos com resíduo (bagaço) de cana e bambu (Dendrocalamus asper) (Schult f.) Backer ex Heyne). Para a produção dos painéis utilizou-se uma mistura de 75% de partículas de bambu e 25% de resíduo de cana. O material foi submetido à temperatura de 220 °C por 201 min. Para a agregação dos materiais utilizou-se adesivo a base de uréia formaldeído (UF) com três teores de sólidos (10, 12 e 14%) com base na massa seca das partículas. A temperatura e o aumento no teor de adesivo promoveram melhorias na estabilidade dimensional. Por outro lado, o tratamento térmico reduziu as propriedades mecânicas. Os painéis constituídos com partículas termorretificadas não atenderam às especificações mínimas exigidas pela norma brasileira utilizada. Os perfis densitométricos foram influenciados negativamente pela modificação térmica e melhorados pelo aumento no teor de adesivo.

ABSTRACT The thermal modification of particles of the paticleboards constituted of agroforest and industrial waste can improves the dimensional stability (thickness variation) and reduces the use of chemicals that can raise the costs of the process or be hazardous to humans and the environment. This study evaluated the effect of the thermal modification on the physical-mechanical properties and density profile of particleboards manufactured from sugarcane bagasse and bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) (Schult f.) Backer ex Heyne). A mixture of 75% bamboo particles and 25% sugarcane bagasse was subjected to 220 °C temperature for 201 min. Urea-formaldehyde (UF)-based adhesive with three solids contents (10, 12 and 14%) based on the dry mass of the particles was used for the aggregation of the materials. Both temperature and increases in the adhesive content improved their dimensional stability, however, the thermal treatment reduced the mechanical properties. The particleboards composed of treated particles did not meet the minimum specifications established by the Brazilian norm utilized. The densitometric profiles were negatively influenced by the thermal modification and improved by the increase in adhesive content.

ABSTRACT In this work, bamboo chips (Dendrocalamus asper) were crushed according to four particle size classes (A = -35+40 mesh; B = -40+48 mesh; C = -48+60 mesh; D = -60+65 mesh) to produce particleboards with four different compositions (100%A; 75%A + 25% B; 50%A + 50%B; 25%A + 25%B + 25%C + 25%D). Each composition was considered a treatment. The aim was to verify the effect on the physical and mechanical properties of panels. The test methods and requirements to evaluate the properties were based on NBR 14810 Brazilian standard. The results showed that the particle size used in compositions showen no significant effect on moisture content, density, thickness swelling (24 hours), internal bonding or resistance to screw withdrawal (face and side) of panels. Significant effects were verified on water absorption (2 and 24 hours), thickness swelling (2 hours), MOR and MOE to static bending.

RESUMO A falta de aproveitamento dos resíduos gerados pelo processamento mecânico da madeira e seu descarte inadequado são desafios para a indústria madeireira. Esses poderiam ser utilizados em produtos de maior valor agregado. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a utilização de resíduos gerados pelo processamento mecânico das madeiras amazônicas Caryocar villosum, Hymenolobium excelsum, Mezilaurus itauba, Erisma uncinatum, Tachigali myrmecophyla e Qualea paraensis na produção de painéis aglomerados de alta densidade. Os painéis foram produzidos com massa específica nominal de 850 kg.m-3, espessura nominal de 15,7 mm e adesivo fenol-formaldeído na proporção de 8%. As propriedades físico-mecânicas dos painéis produzidos a partir de cada espécie e de uma mistura entre todas elas em partes iguais foram avaliadas em sete tratamentos. Corpos- de-prova, retirados dos painéis produzidos, foram confeccionados para ensaios físicos (massa específica, teor de umidade, absorção de água e inchamento em espessura) e mecânicos (flexão estática - MoR e MoE, e ligação interna) de acordo com a norma ABNT NBR 14810-3. As propriedades mecânicas dos painéis aglomerados, manufaturados com os resíduos de C. villosum, H. excelsum e T. myrmecophyla foram, de maneira geral, superiores às das demais espécies e atenderam um ou mais dos requisitos mínimos indicados pela norma ANSI A208.1 para painéis de alta densidade (classificação H-1) e destinados a produção de pisos (classificação PBU).

ABSTRACT The lack of use of the residues generated by the mechanical processing of wood and their inadequate disposal are challenges for the timber industry. They have potential for products with higher value. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the use of residues generated by the mechanical processing of Amazonian woods Caryocar villosum, Hymenolobium excelsum, Mezilaurus lindaviana, Erisma uncinatum, Tachigali myrmecophyla and Qualea paraensis in the high-density particleboard production. The panels produced had nominal density of 850 kg.m-3, nominal thickness of 15.7 mm and 8% of phenol formaldehyde adhesive. The physical-mechanical properties of the panels produced from each species and with a mixture of all of them in equal parts were evaluated. The specimens from the panels were prepared for physical tests (apparent density, moisture content, water absorption and thickness swelling) and mechanical tests (static bending - modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture, and internal bond) according to the standard ABNT NBR 14810-3. The mechanical properties of the particleboards manufactured with the C. villosum, H. excelsum and T. myrmecophyla residues were generally superior than those of the other species and met one or more of the minimum requirements indicated by the ANSI A208.1 standard for (H-1 classification) and for floors production (PBU classification).

ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of removing fines on the physical and mechanical properties of high-density particleboard produced by mechanical processing of Caryocar villosum (pequiá), Tachigali myrmecophyla (tachi-preto) and Hymenolobium excelsum (angelim-da-mata) Amazonian woods. The panels were produced with nominal density of 850 kg.m-3, thickness of 15.7 mm and phenol formaldehyde adhesive. The experimental design was arranged in a factorial design, with the assessment of the effects of three species (pequiá, tachi-preto and angelim-da-mata) and two particle classifications (with and without fines). Their performance was evaluated with respect to their physical (apparent density, moisture content, water absorption and thickness swelling) and mechanical (static bending – modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture and internal bond) properties, realized according to ABNT NBR 14810-3. The removal of fines in the production of panels generated a tendency towards increased MoR, MoE and internal bond values and contributed to reductions in AAw2h, AAw24h and ST2h.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivos determinar a densidade aparente de painéis OSB de Pinus taeda e Pinus elliottii var. elliottii × Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis pelo método gravimétrico e pela densitometria de raios X, obter os perfis densitométricos e verificar sua correlação com a propriedade mecânica de ligação interna. A densidade aparente dos painéis foi determinada pela densitometria de raios X e pelo método gravimétrico, utilizando três corpos de prova (50 × 50 mm) por tratamento. Após as determinações de densidade aparente, os 24 corpos de prova foram submetidos ao ensaio de ligação interna. O método gravimétrico aplicado na determinação da densidade aparente apresentou resultados significativamente maiores do que o método densitométrico. Verificou-se que a densidade mínima do painel, obtida pela densitometria de raios X, teve forte influência na densidade média do painel. Houve correlação entre os valores de densidade aparente dos painéis obtidos por atenuação de raios X e os resultados de ligação interna.

This study aimed to determine the density, by gravimetric method and X-ray densitometry, of Oriented Strand Boards (OSB) produced with Pinus taeda and Pinus elliottii var. elliottii x Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis, to obtain densitometric profiles and observe their correlation with the internal bond. The average density of the panels produced was determined by the methodology of X-ray densitometry and the gravimetric method, using 3 specimens (50 × 50 mm) per treatment. After apparent density measurement, the 24 specimens were subjected to the internal bond test. The gravimetric method applied for the determination of apparent density of the panels presented significantly higher results compared with the densitometric method. It was possible to observe that the minimum density of the board, obtained by the method of X-ray densitometry, has a strong influence on its average density. Correlation was observed between the apparent densities of the panels and the results of internal bond.

Neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar o potencial da madeira do híbrido Pinus elliottii var. elliottii ×Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis, aos sete anos e dez meses de idade, para produção de lâminas. Foram avaliados os seguintes aspectos: a densidade da madeira, o rendimento do processo de laminação e a qualidade das lâminas produzidas a partir de toras retiradas de duas posições no tronco - uma da base (A) e outra subsequente (B). A madeira apresentou baixa densidade básica (0,320 g/cm³) e demonstrou facilidade para ser laminada. O rendimento médio do processo de laminação das toras, sem casca, foi de aproximadamente 53%. Lâminas classificadas nas classes C e C+ somadas corresponderam a aproximadamente 61% do total obtido. As toras da base (A) renderam maior número de lâminas, no entanto, de qualidade inferior em relação às produzidas pelas toras (B). Conclui-se que a madeira do híbrido estudado apresentou bom potencial para a produção de lâminas.

This work aimed to evaluate the utilization potential of wood from Pinus elliottii var. elliottii x Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis hybrid, seven years and 10 months of age, for veneer production. Wood density, peeling yield and the quality of the veneers produced from logs taken from two positions on the tree trunk were assessed: from the base (A logs) and subsequent (B logs). The wood presented low basic density (0.320 g/cm³) and proved to be easily processed in the rotary cutting lathe. The peeling yield (average based on logs without bark) was approximately 53%. The veneers graded in the C and C+ classes accounted for approximately 61% of the total obtained. The A logs yielded more veneers, but the veneers produced presented lower quality compared with those produced from the B logs. We concluded that the hybrid wood herein studied shows good potential for veneer production.

O trabalho teve como objetivo verificar o efeito de diferentes produtos preservantes e de diferentes retenções do produto sobre a resistência de painéis compensados de Pinus taeda ao ataque de fungos xilófagos. O delineamento experimental se constituiu de seis tratamentos, sendo dois tipos de produtos preservantes (CCA e CCB), duas retenções (4,0 e 6,5 kg/m³), um tratamento apenas com água, o qual teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito apenas do processo de aplicação dos preservantes, e um tratamento testemunha (sem tratamento). Os painéis compensados utilizados foram produzidos com a madeira de Pinus taeda, cinco lâminas de 3 mm de espessura e com o adesivo fenol-formaldeído na gramatura de 420 g/m² (linha dupla). Para a avaliação da resistência a biodegradação dos painéis compensados foi utilizada a metodologia proposta pela norma ASTM D2017(2005), sendo avaliados os fungos Trametes versicolor e Gloeophyllum trabeum. Na avaliação da resistência a biodeterioração dos painéis ao ataque do fungo Trametes versicolor não foi observado efeito significativo do tipo de produto e da retenção aplicada. Na avaliação quanto à resistência ao ataque do fungo Gloeophyllum trabeum, o produto CCA aplicado na retenção de 4,0 kg/cm³ proporcionou maior resistência a biodeterioração que o produto CCB também na mesma retenção, e na avaliação das duas retenções do produto CCB observou-se que o aumento da retenção para 6,5 kg/m³ resultou em melhora significativa na resistência a biodegradação dos painéis.

The study aimed to investigate the effect of different preservatives products and retentions on the resistance of Pinus taeda plywood to attack by decay fungi. The experiment consisted of six treatments, two types of products preservatives (CCA and CCB), two retentions (4.0 and 6.5 kg / m³), one treatment with water only, which aimed to evaluate the effect only the process of preservatives application, and a control (no treatment). The plywood was produced with Pinus taeda wood, five veneers of 3 mm thickness and phenol-formaldehyde adhesive at a weight of 420 g / m² (double line). To evaluate the resistance to biodegradation of plywood was used the methodology proposed by ASTM D2017 (2005), and evaluated the fungi Trametes versicolor and Gloeophyllum trabeum. In the resistance evaluation of the panels biodeterioration to attack the fungus Trametes versicolor was no significant effect of product type and retention. The resistance evaluation to attack by fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum, CCA applied in retention of 4.0 kg/cm ³ provided greater resistance to biodeterioration than CCB in the same retention, and in the evaluation of two retentions of CCB there was observed that retention increase to 6.5 kg / m³ resulted in significant improvement in the panels resistance to biodegradation.

Objetivamos caracterizar a madeira Eucalyptus resinifera por meio de ensaios físicos e mecânicos, e estudos de anatomia da madeira, bem como determinar as relações entre as propriedades da madeira e a anatomia. Usamos amostras próximas da casca de dez árvores de E. resinifera com 26 anos de idade. Concluímos que a densidade aparente (Gb), a compressão (f c0) e o cisalhamento paralelo à grã (fv0) foram classificados em três classes de resistência - C30, C40 e C60, respectivamente - e que a retração volumétrica (VS) foi classificada como alta. A relação positiva entre Gb e f v0 é decorrente do alto valor de densidade aparente associado à maior proporção de raios, proporcionando maior resistência ao cisalhamento. Raios mais frequentes aumentaram a resistência ao cisalhamento, pois os raios atuam como elementos de reforço. A relação negativa entre VS e diâmetro do vaso ocorre porque as paredes dos vasos são altamente resistentes ao colapso e maiores lumens representam uma maior proporção de espaços vazios, sendo que menos tecido está disponível para o encolhimento.

In the present study, we aimed to characterize Eucalyptus resinifera wood through physical and mechanical assays and wood anatomy studies, as well as determine the relationships between the properties and anatomy of wood. We used samples collected from the area close to the bark of ten 26-year-old E. resinifera trees. We concluded that the specific gravity (Gb), compression (f c0), and shear parallel to grain (f v0) were ranked in strength classes C30, C40 and C60, respectively, and that volumetric shrinkage (VS) was ranked as high. A positive relationship between Gb and f v0 results from the higher specific gravity associated with higher tissue proportion, in turn, causing higher shear strength. Higher ray frequency increases shear strength, because rays act as reinforcing elements. A negative relationship between VS and vessel diameter occurs because vessel walls are highly resistant to collapse, and since larger lumens represent a higher proportion of empty spaces, less tissue is available for shrinkage.

O objetivo foi de avaliar o efeito do pré e pós-tratamento térmico sobre a resistência dos painéis OSB ao ataque de fungos apodrecedores, e comparar essas duas formas de tratamento térmico com algumas variáveis de produção. O delineamento experimental se constituiu de sete tratamentos, com a avaliação de duas temperaturas de pré-tratamento das partículas (200 e 240ºC), por um período de 60 minutos; do pós-tratamento térmico dos painéis, produzidos com e sem a aplicação de parafina, sob temperatura de 220ºC por um período de 12 minutos; e do aumento do teor de adesivo e a aplicação de parafina em painéis sem tratamento térmico. Para cada tratamento, foram produzidos três painéis com densidade nominal de 0,65 g/cm³ e adesivo à base de fenol-formaldeído. Mediante a análise dos resultados foi possível concluir que os painéis com pré-tratamento térmico a 240ºC apresentaram-se com grande potencial de inibição ao ataque dos fungos Trametes versicolor e Gloeophyllum trabeum, porém, com efeito equivalente ao obtido com o aumento do teor de adesivo fenol-formaldeído. O pós-tratamento térmico não proporcionou melhoria significativa para a resistência biológica dos painéis OSB.

This study evaluated the effect of pre and post thermal treatment on the resistance of OSB panels to attack by decay fungi, and compared these two forms of thermal treatment with some production variables. The experimental design consisted of seven treatments, with the evaluation of two temperatures of pre thermal treatment of the particles (200 and 240 ºC) for a 60 minutes period; post thermal treatment of the panels, produced with and without the application of paraffin, at 220 ºC of temperature for a period of 12 minutes; and increasing the content of adhesive and application of paraffin in panels without thermal treatment. For each treatment three panels were produced with nominal density of 0.65 g/cm³ and phenol-formaldehyde adhesive. By analyzing the results it was concluded that the panels with pre thermal treatment at 240 º C presented great potential for inhibiting the attack of Trametes versicolor fungi and Gloeophyllum trabeum, but with equivalent effect to that obtained with the increasing the content phenol-formaldehyde adhesive. The post thermal treatment did not increase significantly the biological resistance of the OSB panels.

The main objective of this study was to compare the effect of thermal pre-treatment in particles of strand type with the effect of variables of production on physical-mechanical properties of OSB panels, aiming to improve their dimensional stability. The experimental design consisted on five treatments with the assessment of two temperatures of thermal treatment on particles (200 and 240°C) during 60 minutes; the increase of adhesive content, the application of paraffin in different treatments and a control treatment. For each treatment three panels with Phenol-Formaldehyde adhesive were produced. The cycle of pressing panels was: pressure of 3.5 MPa and temperature 160°C during 8 minutes. Analyzing the results of tests it was possible to conclude that: the thermal treatment of particles at 200°C promoted a negative effect on physical and mechanical properties, while thermal treatment of particles at 240°C promoted a significant improvement on physical properties and reduction of mechanical properties. The increase on adhesive content resulted in a significant improvement of WA24h, and the application of paraffin improved the WA2h and TS2h of panels, however such treatments were not so efficient on keeping the dimensional stability of OSB panels as a thermal treatment applied on particles at 240°C.

Objetivou-se no presente estudo, produzir compensados com lâminas classificadas (métodos visual e de aplicação de ondas acústicas) e não classificadas (selecionadas aleatoriamente), dispostas de diferentes formas na fase de montagem, e verificar o efeito do uso dessas técnicas sobre a massa específica, a resistência e a rigidez à flexão estática e a resistência da colagem dos painéis obtidos. O compensado produzido integralmente com lâminas de maior qualidade, classificadas pelo método de aplicação de ondas acústicas, e o compensado produzido integralmente com lâminas selecionadas aleatoriamente, foram os que apresentaram a melhor performance, sem diferenças significativas entre si, exceto para a massa específica.

This study aims to manufacture plywood panels with both graded plies (by visual and acoustic wave methods) and ungraded plies (randomly selected), bonded together in different arrangements, and also to verify the effect of these techniques on the specific mass, strength and stiffness against static bending and binding strength of finished panels. Plywood panels manufactured exclusively with superior quality plies, as graded by the acoustic wave method, and plywood panels manufactured exclusively with randomly selected plies had better performance, with no significant differences being noted between them, except for specific mass.

Foram realizados 16 experimentos em campo, no ano agrícola de 2001/02, nas principais regiões produtoras de algodão do Estado de São Paulo, objetivando avaliar o comportamento de 12 genótipos de algodoeiro em relação à produtividade, à qualidade da fibra e à resistência a seis doenças da cultura. Foi utilizado o delineamento de blocos completos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, cada uma delas representada por duas linhas de 5 metros de comprimento. Diferenças substanciais foram observadas entre os genótipos com respeito à produtividade, quer de algodão em caroço, quer de fibra. Apesar de se mostrar destacada em alguns genótipos, a porcentagem de fibra não constituiu fator predominante na produção de fibra por área. Entre as 12 cultivares estudadas, somente "CNPA ITA 90" e "BRS IPÊ" apresentaram bom índice de resistência à ramularia. Por outro lado, a "IAC 24" apresentou bom índice para murcha de Fusarium, nematóides e ramulose, as três doenças mais destrutíveis. A maioria das cultivares e linhagens estudadas revelou suscetibilidade a uma ou mais das doenças estudadas, não apresentando genótipo com resistência múltipla a todas as doenças consideradas.

In the 2001/02 growing season 16 field experiments were conducted in the main cotton producing regions of the state of São Paulo to evaluate the performance of 12 cotton genotypes for yield, fiber quality and resistance to six diseases of the crop. A randomized complete block design with four replications, which were represented by two five-meter-long rows now used. Substantial differences between genotypes were observed for both cotton seed and fiber. Although outstanding in some genotypes, the fiber percentage was not a determining factor of fiber yield per area. Among the 12 genotypes studied, only 'CNPA ITA 90' and 'BRS IPÊ' presented good index of resistance to the ramularia. On the other hand, 'IAC 24' presented good index for Fusarium, nematodes and ramulose, the three more destructible diseases.Most of the evalueted cultivars and lines were susceptible to one or more diseases; none of them showed multiple resistance to all diseases.

ABSTRACT The objectives of this work was to evaluate the wood from Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla hybrid clones for plywood production and to verify the effects of three factors of that process such as clone (I and II), glue spread (320 and 360 g/m2) and press time (8 and 12 minutes), on the physical and mechanical properties of the produced panels. The plywood from clone I revealed mechanical properties slightly superiors. There was no significant effect of the glue spread evaluated, being the smallest spread the most suitable for plywood bonding of both clones. The smallest press time was what it resulted in panels of larger dimensional stability, being the most suitable in the sheets press of the two clones. The results showed that the studied clones present high potential for general use plywood production. Eventually, if glued with phenolic resin, those plywood have potential for structural use (construction), as well as in the framework production.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve por objetivos avaliar a madeira de clones do híbridoEucalyptus grandis xEucalyptus urophylla para a produção de compensados e verificar os efeitos de três fatores desse processo tais como clone (I e II), gramatura de cola (320 e 360 g/m2) e tempo de prensagem (8 e 12 minutos), sobre as propriedades físicas e mecânicas dos painéis produzidos. Os compensados obtidos a partir do clone I revelaram propriedades mecânicas levemente superiores. Não houve efeito significativo das gramaturas de cola avaliadas, sendo a menor gramatura a mais indicada para colagem dos compensados de ambos clones. O menor tempo de prensagem avaliado foi o que resultou em painéis de maior estabilidade dimensional, sendo o mais indicado na prensagem das lâminas dos dois clones. Os resultados mostraram que os clones estudados são de alto potencial para produção de compensados para uso geral. Eventualmente, se colados com resina fenólica, esses compensados tem potencial para utilização estrutural (construção), bem como na fabricação de formas de concreto.
