Abstract This study presents the first complete mitogenome of the Brazilian Atlantic bushmaster Lachesis with insights into snake evolution. The total length was 17,177 bp, consisting of 13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs and a duplicate control region (CRs). Almost all genes were encoded by the heavy-strand, except for the ND6 gene and eight tRNAs (tRNA-Gln, Ala, Asn, Cys, Tyr, Ser[TGA anticodon], Glu, Pro). Only ATG, ATA, and ATC were starting codons for protein-coding sequences. Stop codons mainly were TAA, AGA, AGG, and TAG; whereas ND1, ND3, and CYTB terminated with incomplete stop codons. Phylogeny retrieved Lachesis within the Crotalinae as the sister group of Agkistrodon; and the Lachesis+Agkistrodon clade as the sister group of (Sistrurus+Crotalus)+Bothrops. The tree supports Crotalinae, Viperinae, and Azemiopinae in the Viperidae family, being sister taxa of Colubridae+(Elapidae+Psammophiidae). The mean genetic distance across 15 snake families and 57 nucleotide sequences was 0.37. The overall mean value of genetic distance across the Crotalinae was 0.23, with Lachesis muta exhibiting the shortest distance of 0.2 with Agkistrodon piscivorus, Protobothrops dabieshanensis and P. flavoviridis and the greatest 0.25 with Gloydius blomhoffii, Trimeresurus albolabris, S. miliarius, and Deinagkistrodon acutus. The complete Atlantic L. muta mitogenome presented herein is only the third annotated mitogenome from more than 430 described Brazilian snake species.

Abstract Anticarsia gemmatalis is one of the main pests of the soybean crop, being controlled mainly with agrochemicals. The environmental and health risks, as well as the development of resistance by the pests, has led to the search for alternative control measures, aiming to use more eco-friendly procedures. The objective of this research was to evaluate the chemical composition and the bioactivity of Schinus molle and Schinus terebinthifolia essential oils (EOs) on A. gemmatalis. The major compound in both EOs was α-pinene (60.04 wt.% for S. molle and 38.49 wt.% for S. terebinthifolia). Bioassays were carried out with third instar larvae, with five replicates and each replicate with ten larvae, totaling 50 larvae per treatment. The oils were incorporated in the artificial diet (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0% v/v). The controls were: water, Tween-80® 0.5% v/v, and novaluron 0.075% v/v. According to the Probit method, the S. terebinthifolia EO presented a LC50 of 1.74% v/v (1.58-1.97% v/v); it was not possible to determine the LC50 for the S. molle EO. The mortality percentage after 24 and 48 h was 52% and 30% at 2.0% v/v for S. terebinthifolia and S. molle oil, respectively. After 72 h, the mortality rate for S. molle EO have not changed; for S. terebinthifolia EO it increased to 70%; the larvae treated with the chemical control (synthetic insecticide) had a mortality of 100%.

RESUMO: A polioencefalomalacia (PEM) é a caracterização morfológica para o amolecimento da substância cinzenta encefálica, e uma de suas principais etiologias é a ingestão excessiva de enxofre. Este trabalho descreve um surto desta enfermidade em bezerros de um a três meses de idade em uma propriedade de Santa Catarina. O lote era composto por 27 bezerros machos da raça Jersey, com alimentação composta por ração inicial, milho inteiro triturado e sal mineral. Deste lote, 10 animais adoeceram, apresentando sinais de apatia, anorexia e cegueira, com evolução para fraqueza generalizada. Nove bezerros morreram e três foram submetidos a necropsia, que demonstraram achatamento das circunvoluções cerebrais além de áreas de amolecimento e coloração amarelada no córtex cerebral. Realizou-se exame histopatológico que evidenciou necrose laminar profunda associada a edema perineuronal e perivascular, além de neurônios com citoplasma enrugado, eosinofílico ou vacuolizado. A dosagem de enxofre resultou em 8010mg/Kg no milho, 6385mg/Kg na ração, 1060mg/Kg no sal mineral e 2,3mg/L na água, atingindo valores muito acima do tolerado, totalizando a ingestão diária de cerca de 6533,5mg de enxofre/animal/dia. Como diagnóstico diferencial realizou-se dosagem de chumbo de amostras de rim e fígado dos três bezerros com resultado negativo. Ainda, o último bovino a adoecer foi tratado com 20mg/Kg de tiamina e 0,2mg/Kg de dexametasona IM, QID, durante três dias e recuperou-se. De acordo com os achados anatomopatológicos e o excesso de enxofre na dieta, sugere-se que a intoxicação por enxofre seja a causa de PEM nestes bezerros de um a três meses de idade, sendo essa enfermidade rara em bovinos tão jovens.

ABSTRACT: Polioencephalomalacia (PEM) is the morphological characterization for softening of brain gray matter, and excess sulfur intake is one of its main causes. This study describes an outbreak of this disease in 1-to-3-month-old calves in a farm located in Santa Catarina state, Brazil. The herd consisted of 27 Jersey male calves whose diet was composed of initial feed, ground whole corn, and mineral salt. From this herd, 10 animals became ill, showing signs of apathy, anorexia and blindness, evolving to generalized weakness and death. Necropsy was performed in three of these animals, which showed flattening of the cerebral convolutions in addition to softened, yellowish areas in the cerebral cortex. Histopathological examination revealed deep laminar necrosis associated with perineuronal and perivascular edema, as well as neurons with wrinkled, eosinophilic, or vacuolated cytoplasm. The following sulfur doses were observed: 8,010mg/kg in corn, 6,385mg/kg in initial feed, 1,060mg/kg in mineral salt and 2.3mg/L in water, reaching dose values far above the accepted, totaling a daily intake of approximately 6,533.5mg sulfur/animal/day. As differential diagnosis, lead was dosed in the kidneys and liver of the three calves, with negative results. Also, the calf that sickened last was treated with 20mg/kg thiamin and 0.2mg/kg dexamethasone (IM; QID) for three days and eventually recovered. According to anatomopathological findings, excess sulfur intake and therapeutic diagnosis, sulfur poisoning was suggested as the cause of PEM in these 1-to-3-month-old calves. Occurrence of PEM is rare in calves at such a young age.

O gênero Ixinandria foi descrito em 1979 para incluir I. steinbachi do alto rio Juramento no norte da Argentina e I. montebelloi do alto rio Bermejo no sul da Bolívia. Utilizamos análise morfométrica multivarida (Análise de Componentes Principais) e uma comparação molecular do gene Citocromo Oxidase I para investigar a variação entre populações distintas da área de distribuição de ambas as espécies. Concluímos que as populações não são significativamente distintas e não merecem reconhecimento como espécies separadas, e colocamos Ixinandria montebelloi na sinonímia de I. steinbachi.

The genus Ixinandria was described in 1979 to include I. steinbachi from the upper río Juramento in northern Argentina and I. montebelloi from the upper río Bermejo in southern Bolivia. We used a multivariate morphometric analysis (Principal Components Analysis) and a molecular comparison of the Cytochrome Oxidase I gene to investigate variation among distinct populations from the known distribution range of both species. We conclude that the populations are not significantly distinct and do not deserve separate species recognition, and we place I. montebelloi in the synonymy of I. steinbachi.

Foram analisadas as relações filogenéticas em sete famílias de proteínas relacionadas à patogênese. As comparações dentro das famílias envolveram 79 espécies, 166 seqüências de aminoácidos e 1.791 sítios nucleotídicos. Para 37 espécies, foram identificadas 124 isoformas diferentes de PRs (uma média de 3,3 por espécie). Trinta e uma (84%) das investigadas nas 37 espécies tenderam a se agrupar. Dos 17 agrupamentos diferenciados nas sete árvores filogenéticas, 10 (59%) estiveram de acordo com a classificação taxonômica, avaliada em nível de família. A forte similaridade entre as formas intraespecíficas, quando comparadas às diferenças interespecíficas, sugere algum tipo de conversão gênica, mas a ocorrência rara de isoformas muito diferentes pode também sugerir seleção diversificadora. As PRs 1, 6 e 4 parecem ser menos diferenciadas do que as PRs 3, 2, 10 e 5.

We have examined phylogenetic relationships in seven pathogenesis-related (PR) protein families. Within-family comparisons involved 79 species, 166 amino acid sequences, and 1,791 sites. For 37 species, 124 different PR isoforms were identified (an average of 3.3 per species). Thirty-one of the 37 species investigated tended to cluster together (84%). Of the 17 clusters distinguished in the seven phylogenetic trees, 10 (59%) were in agreement with their taxonomic status, ascertained at the family level. The strong similarities among the intraspecific forms, as compared to interspecific differences, argue for some kind of gene conversion, but the rare occurrence of widely different isoforms also suggests diversifying selection. PRs 1, 6, and 4 seem to be less differentiated than PRs 3, 2, 10, and 5.
