O presente artigo analisa as imagens do tráfico de pessoas apresentadas pelas principais campanhas do Estado brasileiro e alguns de seus aliados mais importantes da sociedade civil, buscando entender como elas representam vítimas, algozes e a situação de tráfico em si, em suas tentativas de inculcar na sociedade brasileira uma cultura de “resistência à escravidão moderna” (termo émico constantemente empregado no campo antitráfico como sinônimo de tráfico), cujo componente mais importante tem sido a denúncia anônima de “pessoas suspeitas”. Criaremos uma tipografia ideal dessas imagens, dividindo-as em cinco iconografias e comparando-as com imagens semelhantes produzidas em contextos europeus e norte-americanos. Olharemos para as mudanças e permanências que aparecem nas campanhas brasileiras dos últimos anos, e analisaremos algumas das características específicas das campanhas brasileiras. Concluiremos nosso texto com uma breve discussão sobre os possíveis resultados colaterais de campanhas que se baseiam nesses tipos de iconografia.

This article analyzes the images of human trafficking presented by the principal anti-trafficking campaigns created by the Brazilian state and some of its most important allies in civil society. We seek to understand how these campaigns represent victims, perpetrators and trafficking itself in their attempts to inculcate in Brazilian society a culture of “resistance to modern slavery”. Such a culture has as its most important component the anonymous denunciation of “suspicious people”. We present an ideal typography of these images, comparing them to similar images produced in the Western European and North American contexts. We then look at the changes and continuities that appear in the Brazilian images over the years, and analyze some of the specific characteristics of Brazilian campaigns. We conclude with a brief discussion of the possible side effects of campaigns that are based on these kinds of iconography.

Le présent article analyse les images de la traite de personnes des campagnes principales de l’état brésilien et de certains de ses alliés les plus importants de la société civile. Il s’agit de comprendre comment elles représentent les victimes, les agresseurs et la situation de traite en soi quand elles tentent d’inculquer dans la société brésilienne une culture de « résistance à l’esclavage moderne » (terme émique constamment employé dans le le domaine de l’anti-trafic comme synonyme de trafic), dont la composante la plus importante est la dénonciation anonyme de « personnes suspectes ». Nous avons créé une typographie idéale de ces images en les divisant en cinq iconographies et en les comparant à des images similaires produites dans des contextes européens et nord-américains. L’objectif est de souligner les changements et les non-changements qui apparaissent dans les campagnes brésiliennes de ces dernières années, et d’analyser certaines des caractéristiques spécifiques de ces campagnes brésiliennes. Le travail s’achève par une brève discussion sur les éventuels résultats collatéraux de campagnes qui se basent sur ces types d’iconographie.

Resumo Este artigo tem como objetivo refletir sobre os conceitos de trabalho e trabalho de mulher à luz das análises marxistas feministas clássicas. A intenção é problematizar essas categorias a partir de uma conversa ocorrida durante a pesquisa de campo etnográfica, pensando o que significa o trabalho sexual dentro do contexto histórico e atual do mercado de trabalho feminino. Situamos essa ocupação como uma variante do trabalho reprodutivo que ainda provoca grandes polêmicas entre parcelas significativas dos movimentos sociais “progressistas” e dos setores religiosos conservadores, dificultando seu reconhecimento como uma ocupação legítima. Exploramos algumas das possibilidades pelas quais o trabalho sexual – quase sozinho entre os tradicionais trabalhos reprodutivos “feitos por amor” – ainda gera tanto desconforto em grupos políticos/sociais tão heterogêneos.

Abstract The present article reflects upon the concepts of work and womens’ work in the light of classic Marxist feminist analyses. It seeks to problematize these categories, beginning with a conversation that took place during ethnographic fieldwork, thinking about what sex work means within the historical a current context of the market for women’s labor. We situate sex work as a variant of reproductive work which still provokes great controversy among significant portions of “progressive” social movements and also among conservative religious sectors, complicating its recognition as a legitimate occupation. We explore some of the possible reasons why sex work, almost alone among the traditional reproductive labor “done out of love”, still generates so much discomfort among such heterogeneous political and social groups.

O presente artigo fornece uma visão geral de como o tráfico de pessoas tem sido imaginado no Brasil. Afirmamos que uma narrativa mítica tornou-se central para os discursos sobre o tráfico utilizados para orientar os agentes políticos e educar a sociedade civil. Realizamos uma análise estrutural desse mito, argumentando que a sua aceitação, combinada com a persistência de leis que definem o tráfico apenas como a migração de prostitutas, tem criado, na discussão pública, uma paradigma de passividade e de estrito legalismo, onde os membros de certas categorias sociais devem ser "educados para entenderem que são vítimas " e seus movimentos devem ser reprimidos.

This article provides an overview of how trafficking in persons has come to be imagined in Brazil. We stipulate that a mythical narrative has become central to discourses about trafficking used to guide policy-makers and educate civil society. We perform a structural analysis of this myth arguing that its acceptance, combined with the persistence of laws that define trafficking solely as the migration of prostitutes, has shifted public discussion towards a paradigm of passivity and law enforcement where members of certain social categories must be "educated to understand that they are victims" and their movements must be curtailed.

O presente trabalho, baseado em pesquisas históricas nos documentos do Consulado Americano no Rio de Janeiro, analisa um caso envolvendo a prostituição de mulheres estadunidenses naquela cidade, em 1918. Taxadas pelo cônsul americano como "escravas brancas", as dançarinas da companhia de burlesque Baxter and Willard Company quase foram expulsas do Brasil por causa de suas atividades como prostitutas. Analisamos a história delas à luz das pressões políticas e sociais da época. Dedicamos atenção particular sobre como as novas tecnologias de controle da circulação internacional (passaportes) se combinavam com o pânico social sobre a escravidão branca e os projetos políticos dos EUA frente às Américas. Nesse caso, a retórica sobre a proteção das vulneráveis foi utilizada para tentar bloquear a migração de mulheres "impuras" cujas ações e atitudes expuseram os Estados Unidos ao ridículo.

The present study, based on historical research into the archives of the American Consulate in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, analyzes a case involving the prostitution of American women in that city in 1918. Labeled "white slaves" by the American Consul General, the dancers of the Baxter and Willard Company burlesque troop were almost expelled from Brazil due to their activities as prostitutes. Here, we analyze their story in the light of contemporary political and social pressures. We pay special attention to how new technologies controlling international movements (passports) combined with the social panic regarding white slavery and the political projects of the U.S. in Latin America. In this case, the rhetoric of protecting the vulnerable was utilized to block the migration of "impure" women whose actions and attitudes exposed the U.S. to ridicule.

O artigo analisa as inflexões de gênero no campo intelectual brasileiro, em sua interface com a crítica de cultura e literária, entre os anos de 1920 e 1960, por meio das trajetórias sociais de três mulheres expressivas, que fizeram "nome" como críticas de cultura, ensaístas e escritoras: Lúcia Miguel Pereira, Patrícia Galvão e Gilda de Mello e Souza. As três pertencem a gerações distintas e cobrem o espectro político da época: do comunismo ao socialismo, no caso de Patrícia Galvão, passando pelos círculos dos intelectuais católicos, no caso de Lúcia Miguel Pereira, ou mantendo certa distância destas questões e firmando uma identidade intelectual de tipo acadêmico, como Gilda de Mello e Souza. Vistas em conjunto e em meio aos constrangimentos derivados das relações de gênero, elas delineiam alguns dos espaços possíveis para a atuação intelectual das mulheres na época. Para não essencializar marcadores sociais que só ganham vigor analítico quando postos em relação, o artigo se fecha com uma comparação entre o campo intelectual e teatral, com o propósito de contrastar as oportunidades de carreiras e as maneiras distintas de fazer um "nome" que se abriram para as intelectuais e as atrizes no período.

The article analyses the inflections of gender upon the Brazilian intellectual field, in its interface with literary and cultural critique, from the 1920's to the 1960's. It focuses on the trajectory of three expressive women who achieved renown as critics of culture, essayists and writers: Lúcia Miguel Pereira, Patrícia Galvão and Gilda Mello e Souza. The three belong to distinct generations and cover the political spectrum of the time: from Communism to Socialism, for Patrícia Galvão, through the intellectual circles of Catholicism, for Lúcia Miguel Pereira, or else maintaining a certain distance from these issues and establishing an academic intellectual identity, in the case of Gilda de Mello e Souza. When taken as a set and in the context of the constraints that derive from gender relations, they delineate some of the possible fields for the intellectual activity of women at the time. So as to avoid essentializing social markers that only become analytically potent when placed in relationship, the article concludes by a comparison of the intellectual and theatrical fields, in order to contrast career opportunities and the distinct ways of making a "name" for oneself that were available to intellectuals and actresses at the time.

In the present article, I comment on some difficulties related to the building of knowledge regarding human trafficking. I base the present work on research carried out in Brazil and in Spain which shows the importance of mapping and politically locating the different interest groups involved, including those people whom believe that they are protecting and helping trafficking victims. I analyze methodological problems, discussing the effects of the validity of different definitions of human trafficking in the production of data and documents. In conclusion, I consider the distinctions between crime and the violation of human rights so as to better reflect on one of the aspects present in the material: the distance between the perception of those technically considered to be victims of trafficking and the legal definitions of this crime.

The present article inquires into the ways in which a presumed Brazilian "managing" of sexual categories or identities (mainly related to male homosexuality) has been conceived of in anthropology since the end of the 1970, sometimes becoming an axis for building and maintaining a national identity characterized as exotic, backward and non-Western. We also trace parallels between two historical moments of reflection regarding the links between sexuality, culture and politics, briefly reviewing some of the early theoretical and empirical contributions that prefigure the central concerns and conceptualizations of today's sexuality studies: the instability and fluidity of sexual identities and the entanglement of sexuality with dynamic and contextual power relationships and social hierarchies.

The dream of traveling between Brazil and Europe is easy to find in the referential bibliography about transvestites. The changes related to the trafficking in persons, in the Brazilian penal code in 2005, show how different interpretations of the terminology "facilitate" and "facilitation" made a strong impact on transvestites' lives, criminalizing some practices of this group that had in fact been part of their sociability. I argue that the unrecognized position of prostitution as legal work creates a substantial gap between the transvestites and the other illegal Brazilian workers, which leads them into potentially vulnerable situations.

Drawing from a broader research on gender inflections in the Brazilian intellectual field and in Brazilian drama, between 1940 and 1968, the article discusses the relations between aesthetics and gender, and their implications on the careers of actresses Cacilda Becker, Maria Della Costa, Tônia Carrero and Cleyde Yáconis. According to testimony of those who saw her perform on stage, Cacilda was never hampered by her less favorable physical attributes. The hypothesis is that this is due to the cunning tricks of the conventions of dramatic arts that allow the dodging of social, gender and physical constraints. Widely evoked by the media to portrait, underline or diminish women under its focus, beauty rarely features as a relevant dimension in the analysis of female trajectories. Hence the interest in discussing the subject through its refraction on the process of social construction of artistic careers.

Alternative conflict resolution based on conciliation have been identified as a possible response to problems of access to courts deriving from the numbers, costs and length of proceedings in the Brazilian's judicial system. This paper focuses on these alternative forms of justice, regarding domestic violence. Using ethnographic studies of Women's Police Stations and at Small Claim Courts, we argue that conciliation can be very different in these two institutions of the judicial system. The contrasts between moral values and the symbols used in different forms by these two institutions offer elements that can further be our understanding of the context in which Maria da Penha Law was created on August 17th of 2006. With the promulgation of this law, cases of domestic violence against women were excluded from Small Claim Courts in Brazil.

Este texto propõe que aspectos relevantes das práticas de cooperação internacional para o desenvolvimento são melhor compreendidos à luz do regime da dádiva. Para tanto, confrontam-se dados etnográficos relacionados com o modus operandi do campo da AID em Timor-Leste com os legados de Marcel Mauss e a recente produção do M.A.U.S.S. Indica-se que as políticas internacionais de doação são veículos privilegiados de construção de hegemonia em arenas glocalizadas de negociação, mediante as quais diferentes atores constroem identidades e vínculos de aliança, honra e precedência. Neste debate, sugere-se que a maior contradádiva de Timor-Leste à comunidade internacional seja a de se colocar como um instrumento por meio do qual valores caros aos seus doadores, expressos nos mitos ocidentais de boa sociedade, possam mais uma vez ser cultivados no processo de edificação de um novo Estado-nação.

The article proposes that some of the key practices in the area of international cooperation for development can be better understood in terms of a gift regime. To this end, it compares ethnographic data relating to the modus operandi of the aid sector in East Timor with the legacies of Marcel Mauss and the recent production of M.A.U.S.S. International aid policies are shown to be important means for establishing hegemony in glocal negotiation spaces in which different actors construct identities and relations of alliance, honor and precedence. In this debate, it is argued that East Timor's biggest counter-gift to the international community has been to function as an instrument through which values cherished by aid donors, expressed in Western myths of good society, can once again be cultivated in the process of building a new national state.

O presente artigo discute dois diferentes projetos de constituição da escrita histórica no século XIX a partir especialmente da experiência francesa, importante modelo referencial para a constituição da disciplina no espaço acadêmico brasileiro. Ele apresenta resultados parciais de uma pesquisa realizada com acervos documentais franceses a partir da bolsa de pós-doutoramento concedida pela Capes no período 1999-2000.

The present article focuses on two different ways of writing history in 19th century France. One of these models is of particular importance in understanding 19th century Brazilian historiography. Research for this project was made possible by a CAPES fellowship, granted between 1999-2000, which enabled my work in the French archives.

O ARTIGO SUGERE o uso de conceitos e práticas relacionados à retórica como instrumento de análise para pensar a história intelectual do Brasil. História intelectual é tomada em sentido estrito, isto é, como a história de formas discursivas de pensamento, deixando de lado tanto a crítica literária como o que se tem convencionado chamar de nova história cultural. Será feita, de início, breve descrição do estado da história intelectual no país. A seguir será discutida a tradição retórica herdada de Portugal. Ao final, serão sugeridas maneiras de usar esta tradição como chave de leitura para trabalhar textos brasileiros, sobretudo do século XIX.

The paper suggests the use of concepts and practices related to rhetoric as analytical instruments of use in the study of the intellectual history of Brazil. Intellectual history is taken here in its strict sense of history of discursive forms of thought. The paper starts with a brief evaluation of the state of the art of intellectual history in Brazil and continues with a discussion of the rhetorical tradition the country inherited from Portugal. Finally, ways of using this tradition to interpret Brazilian texts, especially those from the XIX century are suggested.

O ARTIGO ANALISA a formação da primeira elite senhorial do Rio de Janeiro e de sua economia (séculos XVI e XVII). Ele parte do pressuposto de que tal formação se daria em um contexto marcado por dificuldades em Portugal e no seu Ultramar. Em meio a este cenário, os conquistadores utilizariam os velhos elementos, porém eficientes, da antiga sociedade lusa: a conquista (de homens e terras), o Senado da Câmara e o sistema de mercês. Como resultado deste processo, teríamos a formação de uma economia de plantation como derivação de uma hierarquia social e econômica que exclui parte dos colonos.

The article analyses the making of the early noble elite in Rio de Janeiro as well as its main economic characteristics during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Both centuries were difficult times for Portugal and it's overseas territories. In this scenario, the conquerors used old but efficient strategies rooted in ancine regime Portuguese society: conquest (of men and lands), control of the municipal senate and of the system of boons. This process resulted in a social and economic hierarchy that excluded part of the colonists and gave birth to the plantation economy.
