Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guenée) é uma das pragas mais sérias do tomate em várias regiões do Brasil. A fêmea deposita seus ovos no cálice ou nos frutos em desenvolvimento, e logo após a eclosão a larva penetra no fruto, onde permanece até a pupação. Depois que a larva entra no fruto, inseticidas e agentes de controle biológico são relativamente ineficazes. Como N. elegantalis é mais suscetível a métodos de controle quando a larva encontra-se no exterior do hospedeiro, seria vantajoso conhecer o período de tempo necessário para o desenvolvimento dos ovos e quanto tempo a larva passa na superfície do fruto. Para responder estas questões, detalhados estudos comportamentais foram conduzidos. Ovos foram coletados no campo e mantidos em câmara ambiental a 20°C, 75 ± 5% U.R., e fotoperíodo de 12L:12E. O horário de eclosão foi registrado com uma câmera de vídeo, enquanto que o comportamento da larva e o tempo requerido para que ela penetre no fruto foram determinados com observações visuais. A maioria dos ovos (93%) eclodiu dentro das primeiras duas horas da fotofase. Larvas passaram 51,1 ± 31,1 (média ± erro padrão) min na superfície do fruto. Uma vez que sítios adequados eram identificados, as larvas necessitaram de 23,8 ± 19,4 min adicionais para entrar completamente nos frutos. Oitenta e seis por cento das larvas penetram com sucesso no fruto. Destas, 42% selecionaram a porção superior, 18% selecionaram a porção média, e 40% selecionaram a porção inferior do fruto.

In several regions of Brazil, Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guenée) is one of the most serious tomato pests. The moth lays eggs on the calyx or developing fruit, and shortly after eclosion larvae penetrate into the fruit, where they remain until pupation. Once larvae have entered the fruits, insecticides and biological control agents are relatively ineffective. Because N. elegantalis is most susceptible to conventional treatments when the larvae are outside the host tissues (or fruit), it would be advantageous to know the time required for egg development and the length of time that the larvae spend on the surface of the fruit. To answer these questions detailed behavioral studies were untaken. Eggs were collected from the field and maintained in an environmental chamber at 20°C, 75 ± 5% R.H., and a 12L:12D photoperiod. The time of egg eclosion was recorded with a video camera, whereas larval behavior and time required to enter the fruit were determined by direct observations. The majority of eggs (93%) hatched within the first two hours after the beginning of photophase. Larvae spent 51.1 ± 31.1 (mean ± SEM) min on the surface of the fruits. Once a suitable site was identified, larvae required an additional 23.8 ± 19.4 min to completely enter the fruit. Eighty-six percent of the larvae were successful in penetrating the fruit. Of the larvae that bored into the fruit, 42% selected the upper portion, 18% selected the middle portion, and 40% selected the lower portion.

Os ácaros fitófagos Panonychus ulmi (Koch) e Tetranychus urticae Koch (Tetranychidae) causam sérios prejuízos à cultura da maçã no Sul do Brasil. Uma alternativa de manejo dessas espécies, atualmente em uso em pomares de macieira de Fraiburgo, SC, é o controle biológico com o ácaro predador Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor). Visando compreender como as interações do predador com ambas as presas em suas plantas hospedeiras são intermediadas ao nível olfativo, estudaram-se as respostas do predador tanto em macieira, Malus domestica (Borkham), como em algumas plantas invasoras de pomares: Sida rhombifolia L., Plantago tomentosa Lamarck e Taraxacum officinale Weber, hospedeiras alternativas de T. urticae no inverno. As respostas foram investigadas em olfatômetro em tubo na forma de Y. Em macieira, para ambas as presas, N. californicus respondeu significativamente aos aleloquímicos emanados de folhas atacadas isoladamente ou em conjunto com a presa e/ou seus subprodutos (fezes, ovos, teias e exúvias), assim como àqueles emanados de folhas sadias com a presa e seus subprodutos. N. californicus também foi atraído por folhas sadias de macieira contendo os subprodutos de T. urticae. Em relação à localização de T. urticae nas plantas hospedeiras alternativas, verificou-se que, em S. rhombifolia e P. tomentosa, os voláteis dos subprodutos do ácaro aparentemente exercem papel atrativo preponderante, enquanto não houve resposta a nenhum dos estímulos olfativos relacionados a T. officinale. Assim, no processo de localização de P. ulmi e T. urticae por N. californicus, tanto os estímulos olfativos da presa e de seus subprodutos como aqueles emitidos pela planta atacada por estes podem funcionar como sinalizadores para o predador localizar as colônias de ácaros fitófagos. Além disto, voláteis das flores das três plantas invasoras exerceram forte atratividade ao predador, o que sugere que este estímulo está envolvido na localização de pólen, outra de suas fontes de alimento.

The phytophagous mites Panonychus ulmi (Koch) and Tetranychus urticae Koch (Tetranychidae) cause severe losses in apples in southern Brazil. An alternate means of managing both species, currently under way in orchards in Fraiburgo, SC, is the use of the predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor). To understand how this predator interacts at the olfactive level with both prey on their host plants, we studied the responses of N. californicus on apple, Malus domestica (Borkham), as well as on three of the predator's alternate winter hosts (Sida rhombifolia L., Plantago tomentosa Lamarck and Taraxacum officinale Weber), in a Y-tube olfactometer. On apple, the tests demonstrated that N. californicus responded significantly to allelochemicals associated with previously-infested leaves with or without P. ulmi or T. urticae or their associated byproducts (feces, eggs, exuviae, and webs), as well as to those associated with previously-uninfested leaves + prey and its byproducts. The predator also responded to a mixture of volatile odors from previously-uninfested apple leaves with T. urticae byproducts. In relation to the location of T. urticae by N. californicus on its alternate winter host plants, we observed that the prey byproducts are more attractive to the predator on S. rhombifolia and P. tomentosa, whereas infested leaves of T. officinale with or without prey and its byproducts did not elicit any response. These results indicate that the volatiles from the host plant, as well as those from the prey and its byproducts, serve as cues in the prey location by N. californicus. Additionally, volatiles from the flowers of the three alternate host plants were highly attractive to the predator, which suggests that this stimuli could be involved in locating pollen, another of its food sources.

Logo após a eclosão, a larva penetra rapidamente no fruto, característica que limita a efetividade dos inseticidas e do controle biológico. O maior entendimento dos sinais que estimulam ou inibem a localização do hospedeiro e a oviposição por N. elegantalis permitiria o desenvolvimento de novas estratégias de controle. Observou-se que a mariposa depositou 89% de seus ovos em frutos pequenos (23,1±0,95 mm) e que 76% dos ovos foram colocados sobre os quatro primeiros frutos basais da penca de tomates. A média do número de ovos/massa de ovos foi de 2,9±0,17 (intervalo de 1 a 13) e aproximadamente 70% desses ovos foram depositados de uma só vez. A percentagem de plantas com uma ou mais massas de ovos aumentou de 11,8% para 100% durante o período de dez semanas de monitoramento em 1996, e de 8,7 para 80% durante o período de nove semanas de amostragem em 1997. No final da safra de 1996, quando o número de plantas contendo ovos de N. elegantalis estava aumentando e as aplicações de pesticidas estavam diminuindo, um parasitóide de ovos, Trichogramma pretiosum Riley, foi coletado. Durante as últimas três datas de amostragem de 1996, a taxa de parasitismo aumentou de 2,4 para 28,7%. Entretanto, na passagem do outono para o inverno da safra de 1997, parasitóides de ovos não foram encontrados.

Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guenée) is one of the most important pests in several tomato growing regions of Brazil. The neonate larva enters the fruit shortly after eclosion, a characteristic that limits the effectiveness of insecticides and biological control agents. A better understanding of the cues that elicit or inhibit host-plant location and oviposition by N. elegantalis could lead to novel control strategies. Our findings indicate that N. elegantalis deposited 89% of its eggs on small fruits (23.1±0.95 mm), and that 76% of the eggs were placed on the first four basal fruits within the fruit cluster. The average number of eggs/egg mass was 2.9±0.17 (range 1-13), and approximately 70% of these were deposited in a single oviposition bout. The percentage of plants with one or more egg mass increased from 11.8 to 100% during a 10-wk monitoring period in 1996, and from 8.7 to 80% during a 9-wk period in 1997. At the end of the growing season in 1996, when the number of plants on which N. elegantalis eggs were found was increasing and pesticide applications were declining, the egg parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum Riley, was observed and collected. During the last three sampling dates of 1996, parasitism rates increased from 2.4 to 28.7%. However, no egg parasitoids were found during the following autumn to winter growing season of 1997.

Para conhecer os estímulos olfativos à curta distância que Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) usa para encontrar seu alimento, isto é, os ácaros fitófagos Panonychus ulmi (Koch) e Tetranychus urticae Koch, estudaram-se as respostas deste ácaro predador em relação aos aleloquímicos voláteis oriundos tanto das duas espécies de presa como de sua planta hospedeira, Malus domestica (Borkham). Na extremidade de um braço da trilha em Y foi introduzido um disco de folha sadia de macieira (= controle) e na outra um dos oito tipos de estímulo (= tratamento) seguintes: 1) folha sadia, 2) folha sadia com a presa, 3) folha sadia com cairomônios da presa, 4) folha sadia com a presa e seus cairomônios, 5) folha atacada limpa, 6) folha atacada com a presa, 7) folha atacada com cairomônios da presa e 8) folha atacada com a presa e seus cairomônios. Para cada tratamento, observou-se a direção do deslocamento do ácaro predador e analisou-se sua porcentagem de resposta. Para localizar P. ulmi, N. californicus orientou-se pelos estímulos oriundos de folhas sadias com a presa e seus cairomônios (T4), folhas atacadas com cairomônios da presa (T7) e folhas atacadas com a presa e seus cairomônios (T8). Com relação a T. urticae, o ácaro predador respondeu significativamente aos estímulos oriundos de folhas sadias com cairomônios da presa (T3) e de folhas sadias com a presa e seus cairomônios (T4), assim como de todas as combinações com folhas atacadas (T5-8). Estes resultados demonstram que os voláteis emanados pelos ácaros fitófagos, por seus subprodutos e pela planta por eles atacada, em conjunto ou isoladamente, são importantes fontes de informação para N. californicus localizar T. urticae à curta distância. Por outro lado, somente a combinação de dois ou mais estímulos olfativos parece sinalizar a localização de P. ulmi para o ácaro predador, principalmente se os cairomônios de suas fezes, ovos e exúvias estiveram incluídos em tal mistura.

To understand how Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) locates its prey, i.e. Panonychus ulmi (Koch) and Tetranychus urticae Koch, we studied the predator's short-distance responses to the volatile allelochemicals associated with these two phytophagous mites and their host plant, Malus domestica (Borkham). At the end of one branch of a Y-shape runway we placed an uninfested apple leaf disk (= control) and, at the other end, one of the eight following types of stimulus (= treatments): 1) uninfested leaf, 2) uninfested leaf + prey, 3) uninfested leaf + prey kairomones, 4) uninfested leaf + prey + prey kairomones, 5) infested leaf, 6) infested leaf + prey, 7) infested leaf + prey kairomones, and 8) infested leaf + prey + prey kairomones. We observed the predator's searching behavior on the runway and analyzed its percentage of response to each of the above stimuli. When P. ulmi was tested, significantly more predators went to the end of the branch with uninfested leaves and prey with its kairomones (T4), infested leaves and prey kairomones (T7), and infested leaves and prey with its kairomones (T8). In relation to T. urticae, the predaceous mite showed significant responses to uninfested leaves with prey kairomones (T3) and to uninfested leaves and prey with its kairomones (T4), as well as to all infested leaf combinations (T5-8). These results indicate that the volatiles associated with the phytophagous mites, their byproducts, and the host plant, either separately or combined, play an important role on the short-distance location of T. urticae by N. californicus. On the other hand, only a combination of two or more of those stimuli appear to signal the location of nearby colonies of P. ulmi to the predaceous mite, specially when the kairomones from their feces, eggs, and exuviae are included in such blend.
