ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to select pear cultivars with production stability for the environmental conditions in the tropics. The design was in randomized blocks with 11 cultivars of pear, four replications and plots consisting of four plants. Between 2015 and 2019, the phenological were evaluated based on the beginning, full bloom, end and duration of flowering and harvest. The number and average fruit mass, yield per plant and estimated yield were also quantified. In the last year of evaluation, the quality of the fruits was quantified through the length and average diameter of the fruits, total titratable acidity, total soluble solids content and total soluble solids / total titratable acidity ratio. The data were submitted to the Scott–Knott grouping test and to quantify the divergence between cultivars was used the genetic distance. After detecting significant interaction between genotypes × environments, phenotypic stability of pear cultivars were analyzed by GGE Biplot methods for the estimated yield variable. The ‘Tenra’, ‘Triunfo’ and ‘Seleta’ cultivars are the most suitable for cultivation in regions with subtropical altitude climate. They are genetically similar, more adapted and stable, and have full or partial synchronized flowering for satisfactory productivity.

ABSTRACT. The present study aimed to review the advances in the production of temperate fruits to determine future research directions that improve production in the tropics. Temperate fruits are no longer only produced in regions characterized by a cold winter period. These fruits are also produced in the sub-tropical and tropical regions characterized by mild winter or even the absence of chilling conditions often required by the tree to break dormancy. Currently, temperate fruit production is possible in certain regions of South America, Africa and Asia that are near to the Equator. However, temperate tree fruit production in tropical regions requires modified techniques to overcome dormancy and allow adequate flowering, growth and productivity. The main approaches taken are the development of cultivars with low chilling requirement, chemical induction of budbreak, interruption of irrigation during the winter period, defoliation, orchard densification, and double pruning. Breeding has become a key tool in the advancement of temperate fruit growing in the tropics, especially with the development of low chilling requirement cultivars.

RESUMO: O cultivo de ameixeira é amplamente difundido nas zonas temperadas. No Brasil, a exploração desta fruteira se estende desde as regiões mais frias do Rio Grande do Sul até o sul de Minas Gerais. No entanto, as cultivares exploradas nas regiões subtropicais são escassas devido a trabalhos de competição. O presente trabalho objetivou-se selecionar cultivares produtivas de ameixas e adaptadas às condições subtropicais brasileiras. Para isso, foram utilizadas as ameixeiras ‘Fla 87-7’, ‘Gema de Ouro’, ‘Grancoure’, ‘Harry Pickstone’, ‘Januária’, ‘Santa Rosa’ e ‘Satsuma’, enxertadas sobre o porta-enxerto ‘Okinawa’ e avaliadas por dois ciclos no município de Lavras, MG. Avaliou-se o desenvolvimento fenológico; atributos físico-químicos das frutas; número médio de frutas por planta; massa média das frutas e produtividade estimada em cada cultivar. Conclui-se que as ameixeiras ‘Januária’ e ‘Grancoure’ são as mais promissoras para regiões subtropicais, principalmente, pelo volume de frutas produzidas e qualidade das frutas.

ABSTRACT: Plum growing is widespread in temperate zones. In Brazil, the exploitation of this fruit tree is extended from the colder regions of the state of Rio Grande do Sul to the south of the state of Minas Gerais. However, cultivars exploited at subtropical regions are scarce due to competition. The present study aimed to select productive cultivars of plums adapted to Brazilian subtropical conditions. In this respect, the plum cultivars ‘Fla 87-7’, ‘Gema de Ouro’, ‘Grancoure’, ‘Harry Pickstone’, ‘Januária’, ‘Santa Rosa’ and ‘Satsuma’ were grafted on the ‘Okinawa’ rootstock ‘and evaluated by two cycles in the municipality of Lavras, MG, Brazil. The phenological development, physical and chemical properties of fruits, average number of fruits per plant, average fruit mass and estimated yield were evaluated for each cultivar. It is concluded that plum cultivars ‘Januária’ and ‘Grancoure’ are the most promising for subtropical regions, mainly due to the volume of produced fruits and the quality of fruits.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar cinco diferentes cultivares híbridas de peras (‘Tenra’, ‘Centenária’, ‘Cascatence’, ‘Primorosa’ e ‘Seleta’) implantadas em regiões subtropicais do Brasil quanto as caracteristicas físico-química, compostos bioativos e atividade antioxidante, bem como avaliar a influência destas cultivares sobre as características físico-químicas, propriedades reológicas e aceitação sensorial da geleia obtida, para identificação de cultivares com maior potentcial para a utilização industrial. Com relação aos compostos bioativos e atividade antioxidante, pode-se observar que a cultivar ‘Seleta’ caracterizou-se pelo maior teor de fenólicos (57,68mg GAEs 100 g-1), maior atividade antioxidante (13,56% de sequestro de DPPH e 1,25μM de trolox g-1) e se destaca devido ao seu maior teor de vitamina C (3,59mg 100g-1). A acidez, variou de 4,09 a 5,81g de ácido málico 100 g-1 (‘Tenra’ e ‘Seleta’, respectivamente). Em relação à cor, o parâmetro de cor L* variou de 32,14 a 36,83, a* variou de 2,87 a 5,20, b* variou de 16,67 a 20,42, Chroma variou de 16,57 a 21,02 e °Hue variou de 74,94 a 80,18. Em relação à textura, as geleias produzidas a partir de ‘Centenária’ e ‘Tenra’ caracterizam-se por apresentar os maiores valores de dureza (1,21 e 1,23N, respectivamente), gomosidade (0,42 e 0,45N, respectivamente) e mastigabilidade (0,40 e 0,45, respectivamente). A geleia obtida da ‘Centenária’ ainda apresentava a maior adesividade (2,27N s-1) e a elasticidade (0,99). Já as geleias preparadas com a ‘Cascatence’ apresentaram os maiores valores de coesividade (0,68). As geleias preparadas com diferentes cultivares de pera mostraram boa aceitação sensorial para todas as propriedades avaliadas, com notas médias variando entre os termos hedônicos “gostei ligeiramente” e “gostei muito”. As cultivares de pereiras subtropicais apresentam características físico-químicas diferentes, resultando em geleias com características físico-químicas e propriedades reológicas distintas. O processamento sob a forma de geleia é extremamente viável devido à boa aceitação por parte dos consumidores de todas as formulações elaboradas.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to characterize five different hybrid cultivars pears (‘Tenra’, ‘Centenária’, ‘Cascatence’, ‘Primorosa’ and ‘Seleta’) deployed in subtropical regions of Brazil regarding its physicochemical characteristics, bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity, as well as to evaluate the influence of these cultivars on the characteristics physicochemical, rheological properties and sensory acceptance of the obtained jelly, for identifying varieties with higher potential for industrial use. Regardingthe bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity it was observed that ‘Seleta’ cultivar was characterized by a higher phenolic content (57.68mg GAEs 100g-1), higher antioxidant activity (13.56% of DPPH sequestration and 1.25µM of trolox g -1) and higher content of vitamin C (3.59mg 100g-1). As the acidity, it ranged from 4.09 to 5.81 g of malic acid 100g-1 (‘Tenra’ and ‘Seleta’, respectively). Regarding color, the color parameter L* varied from 32.14 to 36.83, a* ranged from 2.87 to 5.20, b* ranged from 16.57 to 20.42, Chroma ranged from 16.67 to 21.02 and °Hue ranged from 74.94 to 80.18. Regarding the texture, the jellies produced from ‘Centenária’ and ‘Tenra’ were characterized by having the highest values of hardness (1.21 and 1.23N, respectively), gumminess (0.42 and 0.45, respectively) and chewiness (0.40 and 0.45N, respectively). The jelly obtained from the ‘Centenária’ still showed the highest adhesiveness (2.27N s-1) and springiness (0.99). Already jellies prepared by ‘Cascatence’ showed the highest cohesiveness values (0.68). The jellies prepared with different pear cultivars showed good sensory acceptance for all measured properties, with average scores ranging between the hedonic terms “liked slightly” to “liked very much”. Cultivars of subtropical pear trees present different physicochemical characteristics, resulting in jellies with different physicochemical characteristics and rheological properties. Processing in the form of jelly is extremely viable due to the good acceptance by consumers of all formulations elaborated.

RESUMO. O Brasil, apesar de ser o maior produtor de figo do Hemisfério Sul, na sua maioria utiliza somente uma cultivar, a Roxo de Valinhos. Além disso, a propagação, quase na sua totalidade, é feita através da estaquia lenhosa. Portanto, objetivou-se com o presente trabalho foi estabelecer um método de propagação propicia de maior enraizamento de segmentos caulinares de cultivares de figueira, visando a ampliação da base genética da figueira. As cultivares utilizadas foram: 'Brunswick', 'Calabacita', 'Negro de Bursa', 'Mini Figo', 'Lampa Preta', 'Lemon', 'Troiano', ' Nazaré', 'Três num Prato', 'Princesa', 'Colo de Dama', 'Montes', 'Bêbara Branca', 'Pingo de Mel' e 'Roxo de Valinhos'. Os métodos de propagação utilizados foram: alporquia, estacas lenhosas, segmentos nodais, estacas herbáceas oriundas da desbrota e estacas herbáceas retiradas durante o período de vegetação. Concluiu-se que o método de propagação influencia no enraizamento dos segmentos caulinares. As cultivares diferem quanto ao potencial rizogênico.

ABSTRACT. Although Brazil is the largest fig (Ficus carica L.) producer in the Southern Hemisphere, it mainly uses only one cultivar, 'Roxo de Valinhos'. In addition, propagation is almost entirely through hardwood cuttings. Therefore, the aim of this study was to establish a propagation method that provides more successful rooting of stem segments of fig cultivars for the purpose of expanding the genetic base of the fig tree. The cultivars used were 'Brunswick', 'Calabacita', 'Negro de Bursa', 'Mini Figo', 'Lampa Preta', 'Lemon', 'Troiano',' Nazaré', 'Três num Prato', 'Princesa', 'Colo de Dama', 'Montes', 'Bêbera Branca', 'Pingo de Mel', and 'Roxo de Valinhos'. The propagation methods used were layering, hardwood cuttings, nodal segments, herbaceous cuttings originating from the removal of sprouts, and herbaceous cuttings obtained during growth. We found that the propagation method influences the rooting of stem segments, and cultivars differ in their rooting potential.

RESUMO Physalis peruviana L. é uma espécie pertencente à família Solanaceae, que vem sendo incorporada em plantios de pequenas frutas, com alto potencial produtivo para regiões subtropicais. Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, avaliar a qualidade das frutas de P. peruviana L., produzidas com ou sem cobertura plástica sobre o dossel das plantas e em duas densidades de plantio (0,5 e 1,0 m entre plantas), sendo de 3,0 m o espaçamento entre linhas. O delineamento experimental adotado foi em blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 2 x 2, com seis blocos e dez plantas por parcela. Foram avaliadas as características qualitativas das frutas, como coloração, quantidade de antocianinas totais, vitamina C, cinzas, sólidos solúveis totais, sacarose, glicose, açúcares totais, acidez titulável, firmeza e umidade. A maior densidade de plantio e o plantio sem cobertura plástica sobre o dossel das plantas resultaram em melhor qualidade das frutas de P. peruviana L.

ABSTRACT Physalis peruviana L. is a species belonging to the Solanaceae family, which has been incorporated in small fruit plantations with high yielding potential for subtropical regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the fruits quality of P. peruviana L., produced with or without plastic cover over the plant canopy and two planting densities ( 0.5 and 1.0 m between plants ) and 3.0 m between planting lines. The experimental design was randomized blocks in a factorial 2 x 2 with 6 blocks and 10 plants per plot. We evaluated the qualitative characteristics of fruits such as fresh weight, length, diameter, color, amount of total anthocyanins, vitamin C, ash, soluble solids, sucrose, glucose, total sugars, titratable acidity, firmness and moisture. The higher planting density and planting without plastic cover over the plant canopy result in better fruits quality of P. peruviana L.

O objetivo do trabalho foi estabelecer meio de cultura e avaliar a germinação de grãos de pólen in vitro e após a aplicação de boro na panícula em cultivares de nespereira. Foi determinado o meio de cultura ideal para germinação dos grãos de pólen e avaliada a porcentagem de germinação utilizando pólen da cultivar Mizauto. Também avaliou-se o melhor estágio de desenvolvimento floral e horário do dia para coleta do pólen, bem como o tempo de incubação para sua germinação. Após estabelecido o meio, foi determinada a germinação de nove cultivares: Mizauto, Mizuho, Fukuhara, Parmogi, Centenária, Kurisaki, Néctar de Cristal, Mizumo e Precoce de Campinas. Em campo, avaliou-se a aplicação de ácido bórico em panículas de nespereiras Mizauto, nas concentrações 600 mg L–1, 1.200 mg L–1 e 1.800 mg L–1, além do controle sem aplicação. O meio de cultura estabelecido foi de 200 g L–1 de sacarose, 1.200 mg L–1 de ácido bórico, solidificado com 10 g L–1 de agar e pH 6, incubado por sete horas. O melhor estágio do botão floral foi na pré-antese, coletado entre 14 e 18 horas. A aplicação de 900 mg L–1 de ácido bórico em campo elevou a germinação dos grãos de pólen para 57,68%.

This study aimed to establish a culture media and evaluate pollen grains germination in vitro and after boron applying in the panicles of Loquat cultivars. Was established an appropriate culture media for pollen grains germination and evaluated the germination percentage in Mizauto cultivar. Was also evaluated the best stage of floral growth and the best period of the day to collect the pollen, beyond the evaluation of incubation time for their germination. After established the appropriate culture media, it was determined the germination of 9 cultivars: Mizauto, Mizuho, Fukuhara, Parmogi, Centenária, Kurisaki, Néctar de Cristal, Mizumo and Precoce de Campinas. On the field, was evaluated the applying of boric acid with different concentrations 600, 1200 and 1800 mg L–1 and without applying on the panicles of Mizauto cultivar. The culture media established was composed by 200 g L–1 of sucrose, 1200 mg L–1 of boric acid, solidified with 10 g L–1 of Agar and pH 6, and incubated during seven hours. The best stage of floral bud was in pre-anthesis, collected between two and six pm. The applying of 900 mg L–1 of boric acid on field raised the pollen grain germination to 57.68%.

O objetivo desse estudo foi quantificar o ganho genético para produtividade de grãos do programa de melhoramento do arroz irrigado de Minas Gerais, no período de 1998 a 2010. Foram utilizados dados dos ensaios comparativos avançados realizados em quatro localidades diferentes de Minas Gerais. Nem todos os locais foram contemplados em todos os anos agrícolas e para estimativas com maior acurácia, utilizou-se o método de modelos mistos. O ganho genético para produtividade de grãos no período considerado foi de 107,42 kg ha-1, o que representou uma proporção de 17,88% da estimativa total do progresso. Esse ganho correspondeu ao aumento de 8,95 kg ha-1 ano-1, ou ainda, aumento de 1,99% em produtividade de grãos por ano. Apesar de o ganho genético ter sido satisfatório, novas alternativas de melhoramento podem ser empreendidas para que o incremento produtivo seja maior nos próximos anos.

The objective of this study was to quantify the genetic gain for grain yield of the breeding program of irrigated rice in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in the period of 1998 to 2010. For this, data from advanced comparative trials performed in four different sites of Minas Gerais were analyzed. Some sites were not included in all crop years and thus a mixed model methodology was used to obtain more accurate estimates. The genetic gain for grain yield over the period was 107.42 kg ha-1, which represented a proportion of 17.88% of the total progress estimative. This gain corresponds to an increase of 8.95 kg ha-1 yr-1 or even a 1.99% increase in grain productivity per year. Although the genetic gain has been satisfactory, new alternatives may be applied to improve the rice yield in coming years.
