Resumo O óleo essencial de citronela (Cymbopogon winterianus) possui diversas atividades biológicas, entre elas a ação repelente a insetos. Alguns estudos mostraram que os ésteres do ácido cinâmico podem ser aplicados como pesticidas naturais, inseticidas e fungicidas. Nesse contexto, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a produção de ésteres a partir do óleo essencial de citronela com ácido cinâmico via esterificação enzimática. Além disso, foi investigada a toxicidade do óleo essencial antes e após a esterificação contra Artemia salina e a ação larvicida sobre Aedes aegypti. Os ésteres foram produzidos utilizando ácido cinâmico como agente acilante e óleo essencial de citronela (3: 1) em heptano e 15% em peso da enzima NS 88011 como biocatalisadores, a 70 ° C e 150 rpm. As taxas de conversão de cinamatos de citronelil e geranil foram 58,7 e 69,0% para NS 88011, respectivamente. Para a toxicidade sobre Artemia salina foram obtidos CL50 de 5,29 μg mL-1 para o óleo essencial e 4,36 μg mL-1 para os óleos esterificados com NS 88011. Na atividade inseticida contra larvas de Aedes aegypti, obteve-se CL50 de 111,84 μg mL-1 para o óleo essencial de citronela e 86,30 μg mL-1 para os óleos esterificados com a enzima NS 88011, indicando alta toxicidade dos ésteres. Os resultados demonstraram que as amostras avaliadas apresentam potencial de aplicação como bioinseticida.

Abstract The essential oil of citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus) has several biological activities, among them the insect repellent action. Some studies showed that cinnamic acid esters can be applied as natural pesticides, insecticides and fungicides. In this context, the objective of the present work was to evaluate the production of esters from citronella essential oil with cinnamic acid via enzymatic esterification. Besides, the essential oil toxicity before and after esterification against Artemia salina and larvicidal action on Aedes aegypti was investigated. Esters were produced using cinnamic acid as the acylating agent and citronella essential oil (3:1) in heptane and 15 wt% NS 88011 enzyme as biocatalysts, at 70 °C and 150 rpm. Conversion rates of citronellyl and geranyl cinnamates were 58.7 and 69.0% for NS 88011, respectively. For the toxicity to Artemia salina LC50 results of 5.29 μg mL-1 were obtained for the essential oil and 4.36 μg mL-1 for the esterified oils obtained with NS 88011. In the insecticidal activity against Aedes aegypti larvae, was obtained LC50 of 111.84 μg mL-1 for the essential oil of citronella and 86.30 μg mL-1 for the esterified oils obtained with the enzyme NS 88011, indicating high toxicity of the esters. The results demonstrated that the evaluated samples present potential of application as bioinsecticide.

ABSTRACT Ecological restoration mitigates the negative effects of fragmentation and habitat loss. This practice allows the conservation of key species, such as Ocotea porosa, a tree native to the Araucaria Forest and extremely endangered. A key point in restoration projects is the source of seeds, as well as guidelines for collection. When carried out under technical criteria, the collection allows the maintenance of genetic diversity and adaptive potential in restoration plantations. Given the importance of seed source, genetic diversity, and adaptive potential, this study aimed to define areas and criteria for collecting seeds by characterizing the demography, genetics, and reproductive phenology of an O. porosa population. A plot of 16 hectares was installed in the municipality of Passos Maia, Santa Catarina, Brazil, and a demographic survey of trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) > 15 cm was carried out. Indices of diversity and internal genetic structure (IGS) were estimated using allozyme markers. The reproductive phenology of 67 individuals was evaluated during 8 months. The studied population showed a high density of individuals (10.7 ind. ha-1) with normal diametric distribution. The phenological pattern of the species is regular, seasonal, and annual. The evaluated population showed high genetic diversity, high fixation index, and significant IGS up to 80 meters away. Based on these results, the evaluated fragment can be used as a seed collection area. It has high genetic diversity, density, and area size sufficient to contain several demes. In addition, it is highly recommended that the matrices be at least 80 meters apart to avoid the effects of significant IGS.

RESUMO A restauração ecológica é uma forma de mitigar os efeitos negativos da fragmentação e perda de habitat. Essa prática permite a conservação de espécies-chave, como Ocotea porosa, uma árvore nativa da Floresta com Araucária e extremamente ameaçada de extinção. Um ponto fundamental em projetos de restauração é a fonte de sementes bem como as diretrizes para a coleta. Quando realizada sob critérios técnicos, a coleta permite a manutenção da diversidade genética e potencial adaptativo nos plantios de restauração. Diante do exposto, o objetivo do presente estudo foi caracterizar aspectos da demografia, genética e fenologia reprodutiva de uma população de O. porosa, visando gerar informações para definição de áreas e critérios para a coleta de sementes. Foi instalada uma parcela de 16 hectares no munícipio de Passos Maia, Santa Catarina e realizado levantamento demográfico de árvores com Diâmetro à Altura do Peito (DAP) > 15 cm. Foram estimados índices de diversidade e de estrutura genética interna (EGI), utilizando-se marcadores isoenzimáticos. A fenologia reprodutiva de 67 indivíduos foi avaliada durante 8 meses. O fragmento estudado apresentou uma alta densidade de indivíduos (10,7 ind. ha-1), com uma distribuição diamétrica similar a normal. O padrão fenológico da espécie é sazonal regular e anual. A população avaliada apresentou uma alta diversidade genética, elevado índice de fixação, além de uma EGI significativa até 80 metros de distância. Conclui-se que o fragmento avaliado pode ser utilizado como área de coleta de sementes. O mesmo possui alta diversidade genética, densidade e tamanho de área suficiente para conter várias demes. Além disso, é altamente recomendado que as matrizes tenham no mínimo 80 metros de distância entre si, evitando os efeitos da EGI significativa.

ABSTRACT Objective: Obesity is characterized by a state of chronic, low-intensity systemic inflammation frequently associated with insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. Materials and methods: Given that chronic inflammation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of mood disorders, we investigated if chronic obesity that was initiated early in life – lasting through adulthood – could be more harmful to memory impairment and mood fluctuations such as depression. Results: Here we show that pre-pubertal male rats (30 days old) treated with a high-fat diet (40%) for 8-months gained ~50% more weight when compared to controls, exhibited depression and anxiety-like behaviors but no memory impairment. The prefrontal cortex of the obese rats exhibited an increase in the expression of genes related to inflammatory response, such as NFKb, MMP9, CCl2, PPARb, and PPARg. There were no alterations in genes known to be related to depression. Conclusion: Long-lasting obesity with onset in prepuberal age led to depression and neuroinflammation but not to memory impairment.

Resumo Os coccinelídeos Eriopis connexa (Germar), Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) e Olla v-nigrum (Mulsant) são importantes agentes de controle biológico natural. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a biologia e a tabela de vida de fertilidade dessas três espécies de coccinelídeos. Para a biologia foram utilizados 50 insetos/espécie, mantidos em grupo de 10 em recipientes de vidro de (2300cm3). Para as três espécies estudadas, a viabilidade do ciclo total variou de 45 a 50%. O. v-nigrum foi a espécie que apresentou maior período de oviposição. No entanto, H. axiridis foi àquela que demonstrou maior performance reprodutiva e capacidade de aumento populacional a cada geração. Em conclusão, a utilização de pólen comercial e ovos de A. kuenhiella possibilita o desenvolvimento dos coccinelídeos E. connexa, H. axyridis e O. v-nigrum em condições de laboratório, pois, os insetos completaram o ciclo biológico e originaram adultos com boa performance reprodutiva.

Abstract The coccinellids Eriopis connexa (Germar), Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) and Olla v-nigrum (Mulsant) are important natural biological control agents. The purpose of this paper was to study the biology and create a fertility life table of these three coccinellid species. For the biology study, 50 insects/species were used and kept in groups of 10 in glass vials (2300cm3). For the three species studied, the viability of the total cycle varied from 45 to 50%. O. v-nigrum was the species which presented the longest oviposition period. However, H. axiridis demonstrated the best reproductive performance and ability of population growth in each generation. In conclusion, the use of commercially obtained pollen and A. kuenhiella eggs enables the development of coccinellids E. connexa, H. axyridis and O. v-nigrum under laboratory conditions, since the insects completed their biological cycle and originated adults with good reproductive performance.

INTRODUÇÃO: Existem poucos estudos contemporâneos avaliando o implante de stent direto em pacientes com infarto agudo do miocárdio com supradesnivelamento do segmento ST (IAM). MÉTODO: Estudo de coorte prospectivo com pacientes consecutivamente atendidos com IAM em um centro de referência em cardiologia entre dezembro de 2009 e janeiro de 2010. Dados clínicos e laboratoriais, características angiográficas e evolução hospitalar foram avaliados. Foram excluídos pacientes com mais de 12 horas de evolução, com menos de 18 anos de idade ou por recusa em participar do estudo. Os pacientes submetidos a implante de stent direto foram comparados àqueles tratados com pré-dilatação. Os dados foram armazenados em banco de dados dedicado e analisados com SPSS 17.0. RESULTADOS: No período do estudo, 98 pacientes foram submetidos a angioplastia primária, dos quais em 33 (34,7%) foi implantado stent direto e em 65 (65,3%) foi realizada pré-dilatação. A média de idade dos 98 pacientes foi de 58,6 ± 10,6 anos e 63% eram do sexo masculino. Os procedimentos com stent direto foram menos frequentes em lesões calcificadas (9% vs. 30%; P = 0,02) e mais frequentes naqueles com TIMI 3 pré-procedimento (41% vs. 18%; P = 0,06), sendo a tromboaspiração mais frequentemente utilizada nestes casos (41% vs. 14%; P = 0,003). Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante em relação aos desfechos clínicos nos dois grupos de pacientes. CONCLUSÃO: A técnica de stent direto foi mais frequentemente utilizada em pacientes com fluxo normal antes do procedimento e em conjunto com tromboaspiração, e menos usada em lesões calcificadas. O implante de stent direto não foi associado a diferenças significativas nas taxas de desfechos clínicos.

BACKGROUND: There are few contemporary studies assessing direct stenting in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (AMI). METHOD: Prospective cohort study in consecutive patients with AMI seen at a reference cardiology center from December 2009 to January 2010. Clinical and laboratory data, angiographic characteristics and hospital outcomes were evaluated. Patients with over 12 hours of symptom onset, with less than 18 years of age and those who denied participating in the study were excluded. Patients undergoing direct stenting were compared to those treated with stent with balloon pre-dilatation. Data were entered in a dedicated database and analyzed by SPSS 17.0. RESULTS: During the study period, 98 patients were submitted to primary angioplasty, of which 33 (34.7%) received direct stenting and 65 (65.3%) underwent stent with balloon pre-dilatation. Mean age was 58.6 ± 10.6 years and 63% were men. Direct stenting was less frequent in calcified lesions (9% vs. 30%; P = 0.02) and more frequent in those with TIMI 3 before the procedure (41% vs. 18%; P = 0.06) and thrombus aspiration was more frequently used in these cases (41% vs. 14%; P = 0.003). There was no statistically significant difference for the clinical outcome in both groups of patients. CONCLUSION: Direct stenting was more frequently used in patients with normal flow prior the procedure and in combination with thrombus aspiration and less used in calcified lesions. It was not associated to significant differences in clinical outcome rates.

Diferentes misturas de substratos foram estudados para duas variedades de orquídeas nativas do Brasil: Oncidium baueri e Maxillaria pictea. As plantas foram cultivadas em vasos de cerâmica em casa de vegetação com 50% de luminosidade e regadas 3 vezes por semana. Os substratos utilizados foram os seguintes: 1)xaxim desfibrado; 2)xaxim e cubos; 3)vermiculita; 4)casca de arroz carbonizada; 5)carvão; 6)carvão + casca de arroz carbonizada; 7)cacos de cerâmica; 8)vermiculita + carvão; 9)vermiculita + casca da arroz carbonizada; 10)isopor + carvão; 11)casca de pinus + carvão + isopor; 12) vermiculita + casca da arroz carbonizada + isopor + carvão; 13)casca de pinus. A proporção dos substratos foi de 1:1na mistura. A cada trinta dias foi realizado uma adubação foliar com NPK: 10-10-10 e a cada 90 dias uma adubação orgânica com torta de mamona e farinha de osso. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso com 10 repetições. As avaliações do crescimento e enraizamento foram feita após 8 meses. Para O.baueri o melhor substrato alternativo foi a vermiculita e para M. picta os melhores substratos alternativos foram vermiculita + carvão e vermiculita + palha de arroz carbonizada.

Two native Brazilian orchid especies, Oncidium baueri and Maxillaria picta, were grown in different substrate mixtures. The plants were cultivated in ceramic pots in a greenhouse with 50% of shadind light and watered three times a week. The following substrates were used: 1) de-fibered xaxim; 2)xaxim cubes; 3) vermiculite; 4) carbonized rice husk; 5) charcoal; 6) charcoal + carbonized rice husk; 7) crocks; 8) vermiculite and charcoal; 9) vermiculite + carbonized rice husks; 10) extruded polystyrene + charcoal; 11) pine bark + charcoal + extruded polystyrene; 12) vermiculite + carbonized rice husks + extruded polystyrene + charcoal; 13) pine bark. The substrate ratio was 1:1 in the mixture. NPK 10-10-10 leaf fertilizer was applied every thirty days and castor bean cake and bone powder organic fertilizer were applied every ninety days. A randomized complete block design was used with 10 replications. Growth and rooting were assessed after eight months. The best alternative substrate to O. baueri was vermiculie and the best alternatives substrates to M. picta were vermiculite and charcoal and vermiculite + carbonized rice husks.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar freqüência e fatores associados à ocorrência de exames de campo visual não-confiáveis em pacientes glaucomatosos ou com suspeita de glaucoma que realizaram o exame de perimetria computadorizada pela primeira vez. Métodos: Foram avaliados os prontuários de 262 pacientes glaucomatosos ou suspeitos de glaucoma submetidos ao primeiro exame de campo visual com o Perímetro Humphrey de janeiro a dezembro de 1996. Definiu-se como exame não-confiável a presença de perdas de fixação superiores a 20%, respostas falso-positivas superiores a 33% ou respostas falso-negativas superiores a 33%. Resultados: Quarenta e oito (18,3%) pacientes apresentaram exame não-confiável. Destes, 34 (64,5%) apresentaram alto índice de perda de fixação e 17 (29%) alto índice de falso-negativo. Baixa confiabilidade esteve associada a idade inferior ou igual a 15 anos (p = 0,0005) ou acuidade visual inferior a 20/200 (p = 0,0002). Índice elevado de respostas falso-negativas esteve relacionado a idade superior a 65 anos (p = 0,0227), acuidade inferior a 20/200 (p = 0,005), defeito extenso de campo visual (p = 0,0000 17) e valor do SF aumentado (p = 0,0091). Perda de fixação esteve associada a idade inferior ou igual a 15 anos (p = 0,00008) e acuidade visual inferior a 20/200 (p = 0,0012). Conclusão: A maioria dos exames de campo visual não-confiáveis ocorreu pelo excesso de perda de fixação ou respostas falso-negativas. Pacientes jovens ou com baixa acuidade visual necessitam orientação detalhada e maior número de pausas com a finalidade de minimizar o índice de perda de fixação. Pacientes com dano glaucomatoso grave, acuidade visual inferior a 20/200 ou idade superior a 65 anos possuem maior risco de apresentar exame não-confiável por excesso de respostas falso-negativas.

SUMMARY Purpose: To evaluate the prevalence and risk factors associated with unreliable visual field examinations in glaucoma patients and glaucoma suspects who underwent their first visual field examination. Methods: The records of 262 patientes with glaucoma or glaucoma suspects who underwent their first visual field examination were analyzed using the Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer from January to December 1996. Visualfields were considered unreliable when fixation lasses were greater than 20%, false negative responses were higher than 33% or false positive responses were greater than 33%. Results: Forty-eight (18.3%) patients showed unreliable fields. Of these, 34 (64.5%) had high fixation loss rate and 17(29%) had excessive false negative responses. Low reliability was associated with age below or equal to 15 years (p = 0. 0005) or visual acuity less than 201200 (p = 0. 0002). False negative results were positively correlated with age older than 65 years (p = 0. 022 7), visual acuity less than 201200 (p = 0. 005), severe visual field defects (p = 0. 00001 7), and higher SF rate (p = O. 0091 ). Fixation loss was associated with age below or equal to 15 years (p = 0. 00008) and visual acuity less than 201200 (p = 0. 0012). Conclusion: The majority of unreliable visual field tests was due to either excessive fixation loss or excessive false negative responses. Young patients or patients with low visual acuity may need detailed explanation and continuous patient monitoring in order to reduce the fixation loss rate. Patients with extensive visual field damage secondary to glaucoma, who are older than 65 years and have visual acuity less than 20/200 are at greater risk of increased false negative responses.

Este trabalho analisa a dinâmica do chumbo no lago do parque do Ingá, Maringá - PR. Mensalmente durante um ano foram coletadas amostras de água e sedimentos e o pH e temperatura medidos no ato da coleta. Nas amostras de água foi determinada a Demanda Química de Oxigênio (DQO) e a concentração total de Pb na água e sedimentos. A determinação da concentração Pb na água e sedimentos foi feita com a técnica da espectrometria da absorção atômica, modalidade chama. Os valores médios mensais encontrados, em intervalos e médias globais foram respectivamente: concentração de Pb na água, em ng.mL-1, não detectado (nd) - 55,56 e 19,23; Pb em sedimentos, em µg.g-1, 48,73 - 92,87 e 71,93; pH, 7,02 - 8,23 e 7,60; temperatura, em °C, 19,33 - 27,48 e 23,73; DQO, em mg.L-1, 13,33 - 30,11 e 23,54. Uma análise dos resultados das variáveis medidas, em nível de 5% de significância permitem concluir que a concentração de Pb na água é independente dos pontos de coleta (local), mas, dependente do período de amostragem (temporalidade) e nos sedimentos dependente dos dois parâmetros.

This work introduce the study of lead dynamic in the lake of Ingá Park, Maringá - PR. Monthly, during a year, samples of water and sediments were collected and pH and temperature measured. In the water samples were determined the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the total lead concentration in water and sediment samples. The determination of lead concentration in water and sediments was performed with atomic absorption spectrometer - flame technique. The monthly mean values found, presented in intervals and global mean values, were respectively: lead concentration in water (ng.mL-1), non detected (nd) - 55.56 and 19.23; lead in sediments (µg.g-1), 48.73 - 92.87 and 71.93; pH, 7.02 - 8.23 and 7.60; temperature (ºC), 19.33 - 27.48 and 23.73; COD (mg.L-1), 13.33 - 30.11 and 23.54. A survey of the lead concentration results found permit to conclude, at 5% of significance, that the lead concentration in water was independent of the sampling point (local), but dependent of the sampling period (temporality) and in the sediment dependent of the two parameters.

Objetivou-se conhecer, na época normal de colheita, as quantidades de matéria seca acumuladas, as concentrações dos elementos essenciais às plantas, mais as de cobalto, alumínio e sódio na matéria fresca e seca de 50 cultivares de hortaliças num total de 35 espécies. As amostras, normalmente constituídas de produtos da colheita, foram na sua maioria procedentes da região de Campinas, Estado de São Paulo e separadas em: melancia - em casca + polpa branca, polpa vermelha e semente; melão - em casca + polpa e semente; ervilha - em vagem e grão; berinjela - em fruto e pedúnculo; couve-flor - em folha e inflorescência; beterraba, cenoura, nabo e rabanete - em folha e raiz; alcachofra - em folha + caule e inflorescência. Das demais hortaliças foram utilizados o fruto todo, as folhas ou os bulbos sem separação. Verificou-se que as leguminosas extraíram maiores quantidades de N, P, K, Mg, Cu, Mo, Zn e Co; as tuberosas, de Cl, Fe e Mn; as amarilidáceas, de S, B e Al; as folhosas, de Ca e Na. As cucurbitáceas extraíram menores quantidades da maioria dos nutrientes.

This work reports the dry matter accumulation, the nutrient, Co, Al and Na - concentrations, and the removal of nutrients and Co, Al and Na per metric ton of fresh material of 35 species of vegetables by the harvest. The samples mostly came from the region of Campinas, State of São Paulo and consisted of the products removed from the field, fractioned in their several parts: watermelon in epicarp + white pulp, red pulp and seeds; eggplant in fruit and stalk; melon in epicarp + pulp and seeds; pea in shell and seeds; cauliflower in leaf and inflorescence; sugar beet, carrot, turnip and radish in leaf and root; artichoke in leaf + stalk and inflorescence. The whole fruit was utilized in the case of edible fruit bearing vegetables; the leaves in the case of the leafy vegetables; and the bulbous root in the case of the iffy-like vegetables. In general, the leguminous vegetables extracted the greatest amounts of N, P, K, Mg, Cu, Mo, Zn and Co; the tuberous vegetables, Cl, Fe and Mn; the lily-like vegetables, S, B and Al; leafy vegetables, Ca and Na. Cucurbits extracted the lowest amounts of nutrients.
