Abstract Background: Gut microbiota is a complex organized collection of microorganisms that confers multiple metabolic advantages to the host. The reduced diversity and proportion of specific gut microbial species have been associated with obesity and metabolic disorders. Multidimensional interventions, including modifications in dietary and physical activity habits, are associated with favorable changes in microbiota composition. This pilot study aimed to evaluate changes in the gut microbiota composition of Mexican children with obesity before and after a 6-week multidimensional intervention. Methods: Blood and stool samples were collected, and anthropometric measurements were obtained from six children with obesity before and after the intervention. The intervention consisted of modeling a hypo energetic diet and giving nutritional and physical activation recommendations. DNA from stool samples was used to characterize gut microbial composition by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene. Results: The decrease in waist circumference was associated with increased Odoribacter relative abundance. However, gut microbiota composition and diversity remained unchanged. Conclusions: Although no modifications in the body mass index, body fat, composition, or diversity of the gut microbiota were observed with the intervention, it was possible to associate the reduction in waist circumference with the presence of Odoribacter after a multidimensional intervention in Mexican children with obesity.

Resumen Introducción: La microbiota intestinal es un conjunto de microorganismos organizados de forma compleja que confieren múltiples ventajas metabólicas al hospedero. La reducida diversidad y la proporción de ciertas especies sobre otras se ha asociado con obesidad y enfermedades metabólicas. Las intervenciones multidimensionales, que incluyen modificaciones en los hábitos alimentarios y de actividad física, se asocian con cambios favorables en la composición de la microbiota. El objetivo de este estudio piloto fue evaluar la composición de la microbiota intestinal de niños mexicanos con obesidad, antes y después de una intervención multidimensional de seis semanas de duración. Métodos: Se tomaron muestras de sangre y de heces y se realizaron las mediciones antropométricas de seis niños con obesidad, antes y después de la intervención. La intervención consistió en modelar una dieta hipoenergética y dar recomendaciones nutricias y de actividad física. A partir del DNA de las muestras de heces se realizó la caracterización de la microbiota intestinal por secuenciación del gen 16S del RNAr. Resultados: La disminución de la circunferencia de cintura se asoció con un aumento en la abundancia del género Odoribacter. Sin embargo, no se encontraron cambios en la composición de la microbiota intestinal. Conclusiones: A pesar de que la intervención no modificó el índice de masa corporal, masa grasa, composición ni diversidad de la microbiota intestinal, sí se logró asociar la reducción de la circunferencia de cintura con la abundancia de Odoribacter en el presente estudio piloto en niños mexicanos con obesidad.

ABSTRACT Objective: Obesity is characterized by a state of chronic, low-intensity systemic inflammation frequently associated with insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. Materials and methods: Given that chronic inflammation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of mood disorders, we investigated if chronic obesity that was initiated early in life – lasting through adulthood – could be more harmful to memory impairment and mood fluctuations such as depression. Results: Here we show that pre-pubertal male rats (30 days old) treated with a high-fat diet (40%) for 8-months gained ~50% more weight when compared to controls, exhibited depression and anxiety-like behaviors but no memory impairment. The prefrontal cortex of the obese rats exhibited an increase in the expression of genes related to inflammatory response, such as NFKb, MMP9, CCl2, PPARb, and PPARg. There were no alterations in genes known to be related to depression. Conclusion: Long-lasting obesity with onset in prepuberal age led to depression and neuroinflammation but not to memory impairment.

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of Exhippolysmata oplophoroides and relate its abundance to various environmental variables (bottom water temperature and salinity, texture of sediment and percentage of dissolved organic matter). The sampling of shrimp and abiotic factors was carried out monthly from July 2012 to June 2014, in seven trawling stations (S1-S7), four of them in the marine area and three in the estuary (southern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil). The distribution of individuals showed significant differences between stations and between the two years of study (ANOVA, p < 0.05), but not among seasons (p > 0.05). A total of 2005 shrimp were collected, with the highest abundance being found in S4 (n= 937). Bottom salinity and sediment texture were the environmental factors with significant influence on the distribution of the species in the studied region. The low salinity values at S6 and S7, and the low capacity for osmoregulation of E. oplophoroides limit its distribution in the marine environment. High concentrations of silt+clay found at S4 contributed to the accumulation of organic matter, which influenced the high abundance of shrimp there. The information gathered in our study provides valuable results for the knowledge of this species in its area of distribution and contributes to a better understanding of the life history.

ABSTRACT Wasps are a diverse group of insects that possess a sting apparatus associated with a venom gland, which is used for predation and colony defense. The biochemistry of Hymenoptera venom has been evaluated in relation to allergy and immunology, and proteomics has been shown to be a powerful tool for the identification of compounds with pharmacological potential. Data on wasps venom the of genus Apoica are scarce, so the objective of the present work was to identify the venom proteins of the eusocial wasp Apoica pallens, as a first step towards further investigation of applied uses of the venom and its protein constituents. The venom proteins were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, followed by MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry. A total of 259 spots were detected, with molecular weights from 4.9 to 141 kDa. Thirty of these proteins were identified and classified into eight functional categories: allergen, enzyme, metabolism, structural, environmental response, proteoglycan, active in DNA and RNA, and unknown function. Due to the few available proteomic data for wasp venom, many proteins could not be identified, which makes studies with proteomic analysis of Hymenoptera venom even more important.

A grande biodiversidade encontrada nas florestas tropicais tem intrigado cientistas por um longo tempo. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi usar uma matriz de nicho bi-dimensional para explicar a coexistência das espécies de morcegos em uma localidade de Mata Atlântica brasileira. Os morcegos foram capturados com um conjunto de redes de neblina e também manualmente. As amostragens foram realizadas entre janeiro de 2009 e maio de 2010, totalizando 41 noites de esforço (64800 m².h apenas de esforço sistematizado). A matriz de nicho bi‑dimensional foi criada usando grupos funcionais (usando o hábito alimentar predominante) e classes de tamanho criadas a posteriori. Sete classes de tamanho foram definidas com base nos comprimentos do antebraço; essas classes mostraram-se diferentes usando o teste de Kruskal-Wallis (p<0,05). Um total de dezenove espécies foram registradas, das quais dezesseis foram detectadas apenas em esforços sistematizados. Sturnira lilium e Carollia perspicillata foram as espécies mais abundantes. Cinco espécies foram comuns, dez intermediárias e quatro raras na assembleia estudada. A maioria dos indivíduos capturados pertencia ao grupo funcional dos frugívoros. Os grupos funcionais dos insetívoros aéreos e dos furgívoros foram os grupos mais ricos, com sete espécies cada um. Foi criada uma matriz de nicho com 35 células, das quais 15 foram ocupadas por espécies de morcego, sendo apenas três delas ocupadas por duas ou mais espécies. A análise mostrou que a combinação de hábitos alimentares com classes de tamanho poderia explicar a partilha de recursos e a coexistência da maioria das dezenove espécies de morcegos na assembleia estudada. A coexistência restante pode ser explicada pelas características cranianas (crânios delicados versus robustos - para insetívoros aéreos) ou alguma especialização alimentar (para as espécies frugívoras).

The great biological diversity found in tropical forests has intrigued scientists for a long time. In this study, we used a bi-dimensional niche matrix to explain the coexistence of bat species in a Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest locality. Bats were caught with a set of mist nets and manually. The samples were taken between Jan/2009 and May/2010, totalizing 41 nights of effort (64800 m².h, only of standardized efforts). The bi-dimensional niche matrix was assembled using functional groups (using predominant feeding habits) and size classes created a posteriori. Seven size classes were defined on the basis of forearm lengths; these classes were shown to be different using a Kruskal-Wallis test (p<0.05). A total of nineteen bat species were recorded, of which sixteen were detected in systematical efforts. Sturnira lilium and Carollia perspicillata were the most abundant species. Five species were regarded as common, ten were intermediate, and four were rare in the studied assemblage. Most individuals sampled belonged to the frugivorous functional group. The aerial insectivore and frugivore functional groups were the richest functional groups, with seven species each. A niche matrix with 35 cells was created, of which 15 were occupied by bats; and only three of them occupied by two or more species. The analysis showed that a combination of feeding habits and size classes could account for resource sharing and coexistence of most of the nineteen bat species in the studied assemblage. The rest of coexistence can be explained by skull characteristics (gracile versus robust skulls for aerial insectivores) or some feeding specializations (for frugivore species).

Attention and emotion have a positive impact on memory formation, which is related to the activation of the noradrenergic system in the brain. The hippocampus and amygdala are fundamental structures in memory acquisition, which is modulated by noradrenaline through the noradrenergic receptors. Pharmacological studies suggest that memory acquisition depends on the action of both the β3 (β3-AR) and β2 (β2-AR) receptor subtypes. However, the use of animal models with specific knockout for the β3-AR receptor only (β3-ARKO) allows researchers to more accurately assess its role in memory formation processes. In the present study, we evaluated short- and long-term memory acquisition capacity in β3-ARKO mice and wild-type mice at approximately 60 days of age. The animals were submitted to the open field test, the elevated plus maze, object recognition, and social preference. The results showed that the absence of the β3-AR receptor caused no impairment in locomotion and did not cause anxious behavior, but it caused significant impairment of short- and long-term memory compared to wild-type animals. We also evaluated the expression of genes involved in memory consolidation. The mRNA levels for GLUT3, a glucose transporter expressed in the central nervous system, were significantly reduced in the amygdala, but not in the hippocampus of the β3-ARKO animals. Our results showed that β3-AR was involved in the process of acquisition of declarative memory, and its action may be due to the facilitation of glucose absorption in the amygdala.

Abstract This study described a broad clinical characterization of classical homocystinuria (HCU) in Brazil. This was a cross-sectional, observational study including clinical and biochemical data from 72 patients (60 families) from Brazil (South, n = 13; Southeast, n = 37; Northeast, n = 8; North, n = 1; and Midwest, n = 1). Parental consanguinity was reported in 42% of families. Ocular manifestations were the earliest detected symptom (53% of cases), the main reason for diagnostic suspicion (63% of cases), and the most prevalent manifestation at diagnosis (67% of cases). Pyridoxine responsiveness was observed in 14% of patients. Only 22% of nonresponsive patients on treatment had total homocysteine levels <100 mmol/L. Most commonly used treatment strategies were pyridoxine (93% of patients), folic acid (90%), betaine (74%), vitamin B12 (27%), and low-methionine diet + metabolic formula (17%). Most patients diagnosed with HCU in Brazil are late diagnosed, express a severe phenotype, and poor metabolic control. Milder forms of HCU are likely underrepresented due to underdiagnosis.

Resumo Introdução Nanopartículas e associações ao hidróxido de cálcio podem ser usados para aumentar a ação antimicrobiana. Objetivo Avaliar a atividade antibacteriana sobre Enterococcus faecalis e o pH de medicações intracanal (MI) à base de hidróxido de cálcio (HC) e óxido de zinco (OZn) micro- e nanoparticulado, e suas associações com clorexidina (CHX) a 0,4%. Material e método Canais radiculares de dentes humanos unirradiculados foram inoculados e incubados por 21 dias. Após coleta (C1), os canais radiculares foram preenchidos com os medicamentos durante 7 dias e as amostras foram coletadas imediatamente após a medicação (C2) e 7 dias depois (C3). Contagem de UFC mL-1 foi realizada. Os tubos de polietileno preenchidos com os medicamentos foram utilizados para a avaliação do pH após 3, 7, 14 e 28 dias. Os dados foram submetidos aos testes de ANOVA e Tukey (p<0,05). Resultado Todas as MI promoveram eliminação de E. faecalis imediatamente após a medicação (C2). Todas as pastas promoveram similar aumento de pH. Conclusão HC/OZn micro- ou nanoparticulado associado com CHX promove maior redução bacteriana nos canais radiculares e pH similar.

Abstract Introduction Nanoparticles and associations to calcium hydroxide can be used to increase antimicrobial activity. Objective To evaluate antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis and pH of intracanal medications (IM) based on calcium hydroxide (CH) and zinc oxide (ZnO) micro- or nanoparticles, and their association with 0.4% chlorhexidine (CHX). Material and method Root canals from single-rooted human teeth were inoculated and incubated for 21 days. After sample (S1), the root canals were filled with the medications for 7 days and samples were collected immediately after medication (S2) and 7 days later (S3). Counting of CFU mL-1 was performed. Polyethylene tubes filled with the medications were used for the pH evaluation after 3, 7, 14 and 28 days. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey tests (p<0.05). Result All IM promoted elimination of E. faecalis immediately after medication (S2). All the pastes promoted a similar pH increase. Conclusion CH/ZnO micro- or nanoparticles associated with CHX promoted greater bacterial reduction in the root canals and similar pH.

ABSTRACT Objective Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is a calcium silicate cement composed of Portland cement (PC) and bismuth oxide. Hydroxyapatite has been incorporated to enhance mechanical and biological properties of dental materials. This study evaluated physicochemical and mechanical properties and antibiofilm activity of MTA and PC associated with zirconium oxide (ZrO2) and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAn). Material and Methods White MTA (Angelus, Brazil); PC (70%)+ZrO2 (30%); PC (60%)+ZrO2 (30%)+HAn (10%); PC (50%)+ZrO2 (30%)+HAn (20%) were evaluated. The pH was assessed by a digital pH-meter and solubility by mass loss. Setting time was evaluated by using Gilmore needles. Compressive strength was analyzed by mechanical test. Samples were radiographed alongside an aluminum step wedge to evaluate radiopacity. For the antibiofilm evaluation, materials were placed in direct contact with E. faecalis biofilm induced on dentine blocks. The number of colony-forming units (CFU mL-1) in the remaining biolfilm was evaluated. The results were submitted to ANOVA and the Tukey test, with 5% significance. Results There was no difference in pH levels of PC+ZrO2, PC+ZrO2+HAn (10%) and PC+ZrO2+HAn (20%) (p>0.05) and these cements presented higher pH levels than MTA (p<0.05). The highest solubility was observed in PC+ZrO2+HAn (10%) and PC+ZrO2+HAn (20%) (p<0.05). MTA had the shortest initial setting time (p<0.05). All the materials showed radiopacity higher than 3 mmAl. PC+ZrO2 and MTA had the highest compressive strength (p<0.05). Materials did not completely neutralize the bacterial biofilm, but the association with HAn provided greater bacterial reduction than MTA and PC+ZrO2 (p<0.05) after the post-manipulation period of 2 days. Conclusions The addition of HAn to PC associated with ZrO2 harmed the compressive strength and solubility. On the other hand, HAn did not change the pH and the initial setting time, but improved the radiopacity (HAn 10%), the final setting time and the E. faecalis antibiofilm activity of the cement.

RESUMO: Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae ) é a principal praga-alvo dos eventos de milho YieldGard VT PRO(tm) (Cry1A.105/Cry2Ab2) e PowerCore(tm) (Cry1A.105/Cry2Ab2/Cry1F). Para subsidiar o manejo de resistência, avaliou-se a atividade biológica das proteínas de Bt expressas em diferentes estruturas dessas tecnologias de milho Bt contra S. frugiperda . Em discos de folha de milho YieldGard VT PRO(tm) e PowerCore(tm), houve mortalidade completa de neonatas de S. frugiperda . No entanto, em estilo-estigmas e grãos, a mortalidade foi inferior a 50% e 6%, respectivamente. Em adição, mais de 49% das larvas sobreviventes em estilos-estigmas e grãos completaram o ciclo biológico. No entanto, todos os parâmetros de tabela de vida de fertilidade foram negativamente afetados nos insetos que se desenvolveram em estilos-estigmas e grãos de milho Bt. A baixa atividade biológica das proteínas Bt expressas em estilos-estigmas e grãos de milho YieldGard VT PRO(tm) e PowerCore(tm) pode contribuir para a evolução de resistência em populações de S. frugiperda .

ABSTRACT: Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) is the main target pest of Bt corn technologies, such as YieldGard VT PRO(tm) (Cry1A.105/Cry2Ab2) and PowerCore(tm) (Cry1A.105/Cry2Ab2/Cry1F). In this study, it was evaluated the biological activity of Bt proteins expressed in different plant structures of YieldGard VT PRO(tm) and PowerCore(tm) corn against S. frugiperda . Complete mortality of S. frugiperda neonates was observed on leaf-disc of both Bt corn technologies. However, the mortality in silks and grains was lower than 50 and 6%, respectively. In addition, more than 49% of the surviving larvae in silks and grains completed the biological cycle. However, all life table parameters were negatively affected in insects that developed in silks and grains of both Bt corn events. In summary, the low biological activity of Bt proteins expressed on silks and grains of YieldGard VT PRO(tm) and PowerCore(tm) corn can contribute to the resistance evolution in S. frugiperda populations.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a frequência e associação de fatores de virulência de Escherichia (E.) coli isoladas de leitões desmamados com diarreia e correlacioná-la com consistência fecal. Suabes retais foram coletados em leitões com 25-40 dias de idade com sinal clínico de diarreia, em granjas do Sul do Brasil, totalizando 456 amostras. Foram utilizadas técnicas fenotípicas e moleculares para isolamento bacteriano, caracterização e classificação de patotipos de E. coli enterotoxigênica (ETEC). A análise estatística foi realizada para determinar a frequência de fatores de virulência e virotipos, de fímbrias F4, F5, F6, F18, F41 e toxinas LT, STa, STB e STx2e. Duzentas e oitenta e sete (62,9%) amostras apresentaram crescimento significativo de E. coli. Entre os quais, 194 (67,6%) amostras apresentaram pelo menos um fator de virulência, indicando que ETEC é um importante agente etiológico de diarreia em leitões desmamados. As frequências mais elevadas foram encontradas para as fímbrias F4 e F18 e enterotoxinas LT, STa e STb. Associação significativa foi encontrada para F4, LT, STa e STb; entre F18 e STa e STx2e; entre F5 e LT, STa e STb. Os virotipos mais frequentes foram F18-STa, F4-LT-STa-STb, F4-STa, F4-LT-STb e F18-STa-STx2e. Beta-hemólise foi observada em 47,4% das amostras e houve associação significativa entre amostras hemolíticas e fatores de virulência F4, F18, STa e STx2e. Quanto consistência fecal, houve associação significativa de fezes líquidas e fímbria F4, toxina STa e virotipos F4-STa e F4-F5-LT-STa-STb. A associação significativa da ETEC e fezes líquidas em leitões de creche, é importante para priorizar a amostragem de fezes com essa consistência para no diagnóstico etiológico da diarreia.

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the frequency and association of virulence factors of Escherichia (E.) coli isolated from weaned piglets with diarrhea and to correlate it with fecal consistency. A total of 152 rectal swabs were collected from 25-40 day-old piglets with diarrhea, in farms of Southern Brazil. Phenotypical and molecular techniques were used for bacterial isolation, characterization and classification of enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) pathotypes. Statistical analysis was carried out to determine the frequency of virulence factors and virotypes, of fimbriae F4, F5, F6, F18, F41 and toxins LT, STa, STb and STx2e. Out of 456 E. coli isolates, 287 (62.9%) samples showed significant growth of E. coli. Among them, 194 (67.6%) samples showed at least one virulence factor, indicating that ETEC is an important etiological agent of diarrhea in weaned piglets. Higher frequencies were found of fimbria F4 and F18 and enterotoxins LT, STa and STb. Significant association was found to F4, LT, STa and STb; between F18 and STa and STx2e; between F5 and LT, STa and STb. The most frequent virotypes were F18-STa, F4-LT-STa-STb, F4-STa, F4-LT-STb and F18-STa-STx2e. Beta-hemolysis was observed in 47.4% of samples and there was significant association between hemolytic samples and virulence factors F4, F18, STa and STx2e. Regarding fecal consistency, there was significant association of liquid feces and F4 fimbria, STa toxin and virotypes F4-STa and F4-F5-LT-STa-STb. Since there was significant association of ETEC and liquid feces in nursery piglets, it is important to prioritize the sampling of liquid feces for the diagnosis etiologic cause of diarrhea.

Resumo Os coccinelídeos Eriopis connexa (Germar), Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) e Olla v-nigrum (Mulsant) são importantes agentes de controle biológico natural. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a biologia e a tabela de vida de fertilidade dessas três espécies de coccinelídeos. Para a biologia foram utilizados 50 insetos/espécie, mantidos em grupo de 10 em recipientes de vidro de (2300cm3). Para as três espécies estudadas, a viabilidade do ciclo total variou de 45 a 50%. O. v-nigrum foi a espécie que apresentou maior período de oviposição. No entanto, H. axiridis foi àquela que demonstrou maior performance reprodutiva e capacidade de aumento populacional a cada geração. Em conclusão, a utilização de pólen comercial e ovos de A. kuenhiella possibilita o desenvolvimento dos coccinelídeos E. connexa, H. axyridis e O. v-nigrum em condições de laboratório, pois, os insetos completaram o ciclo biológico e originaram adultos com boa performance reprodutiva.

Abstract The coccinellids Eriopis connexa (Germar), Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) and Olla v-nigrum (Mulsant) are important natural biological control agents. The purpose of this paper was to study the biology and create a fertility life table of these three coccinellid species. For the biology study, 50 insects/species were used and kept in groups of 10 in glass vials (2300cm3). For the three species studied, the viability of the total cycle varied from 45 to 50%. O. v-nigrum was the species which presented the longest oviposition period. However, H. axiridis demonstrated the best reproductive performance and ability of population growth in each generation. In conclusion, the use of commercially obtained pollen and A. kuenhiella eggs enables the development of coccinellids E. connexa, H. axyridis and O. v-nigrum under laboratory conditions, since the insects completed their biological cycle and originated adults with good reproductive performance.

The present study reports the stability profile of an antithrombotic drug: dabigatran etexilate (DAB). The drug was subjected to thermal degradation at 60 ºC and products formed were investigated by liquid chromatography-UV (LC-UV) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS). Chromatographic separation of the degradation products was performed on a GL Sciences Inc. Inertsil ODS-2 column (250 mm × 4.6 mm i.d., with a particle size of 5 µm and pore size of 110 Å) with mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile and ammonium acetate buffer (pH 5.5; 10 mmol L−1) (65:35, v/v) pumped at 1.0 mL min−1 flow rate. Column temperature was set at 30 ºC and detection at 225 nm using a UV detector. LC-UV method previously validated was extended to LC-ESI-MS for the characterization of the degradation products (DP-01 and DP-02) formed, without complicated isolation or purification processes, based on retention times and confirmation of molecular weight. Degradation kinetics of DAB was also evaluated and could be described as a first-order process (R2= 0.9900). Furthermore, no evidence of cytotoxicity in human mononuclear cells was observed for DAB degraded samples.

Objetivos: Analisar o perfil epidemiológico desses pacientes tratados cirurgicamente em um hospital de referência do interior. Métodos: Revisão retrospectiva entre fevereiro de 2009 e maio de 2010 em unidade de referência regional, totalizando 24 pacientes. Incluíram-se na casuística todos os pacientes submetidos à cirurgia nesse período, em razão de trauma na coluna vertebral com ou sem déficits neurológicos. Os dados analisados foram sexo, idade, localização e grau da lesão e mecanismo do trauma. Resultados: A média de idade dos pacientes foi 35,8 anos, sendo 75% do sexo masculino. O mecanismo do trauma distribuiu-se da seguinte maneira: 37,5% por acidentes com motocicletas, 33,3% decorrentes de quedas, 25% por acidentes com automóveis e 4,2% envolvendo mergulho em águas rasas. Os níveis vertebrais afetados foram coluna cervical (44%), coluna torácica (36%) e região toracolombar (20%). O comprometimento neurológico, segundo a Classificação ASIA (American Spinal Injury Association), foi lesão completa ou A em 37,5%, lesão incompleta B em 4,2%, lesão incompleta C em 12,5%, lesão incompleta D em 8,3% e, ainda, 37,5% das lesões foram classificadas como incompletas E. Sessenta e quatro por cento das intervenções realizadas foram por acesso posterior e 36%, por acesso anterior. Conclusão: O perfil epidemiológico mantém a tendência de predominância de envolvimento de jovens do sexo masculino, de lesões no nível cervical e de ocorrência de lesão medular. Contudo, os acidentes envolvendo motocicletas e quedas de altura são fatores modificáveis por medidas de segurança no trânsito e no trabalho, que podem alterar a elevação de sua prevalência.

Objectives: To analyze the epidemiological profile of patients undergoing surgery at a referral hospital in a small, country town. Methods: A retrospective study was carried out between February 2009 and May 2010, in a Regional Referral unit, with a total of 24 patients. The cases study included all patients undergoing surgery for spinal trauma during this period, with or without neurological deficits. The data analyzed were: sex, age, location and degree of the injury, and mechanism of the injury. Results: The medianage of the patients was 35.8 years, and 75% were male. The mechanisms of the injury were motorcycle accidents in 37.5%, falls in 33.3%, automobile accidents in 25%, and diving into shallow water in 4.2%. The vertebral level affected was the cervical spine in 44%, the thoracic spine in 36%, and the thoracolumbar level in 20%. The neurological damage, classified according ASIA (American Spinal Injury Association) was complete, or category A in 37.5%, incomplete, or category B in 4.2%, incomplete, or category C in 12.5%, incomplete, or category D in 8.3%, and incomplete, or category E in 37.5%. In terms of access route, 64% of the procedures were performed with posterior access and 36% with anterior access. Conclusion: The epidemiological profile maintains the trend towards a prevalence of injuries among young men, affecting the cervical level, with the presence of spinal cord lesion. However, accidents involving motorcycles and fallings from heights are factors that can be modified by safety measures on the roads and in the workplace, which can reverse the high prevalence of these accidents.

Objetivos: Analizar el perfil epidemiológico de los pacientes tratados quirúrgicamente en un hospital de referencia en el interior. Métodos: Revisión retrospectiva entre febrero de 2009 y mayo de 2010 en una unidad de referencia regional, con un total de 24 pacientes. Se incluyeron en la casuística a todos los pacientes sometidos a cirugía durante este período, debido a un traumatismo en la columna vertebral con o sin déficit neurológico. Los datos analizados fueron sexo, edad, localización y grado de la lesión y mecanismo del trauma. Resultados: La edad media de los pacientes era de 35,8 años, siendo el 75% del sexo masculino. El mecanismo de trauma se distribuyó de la siguiente manera: 37,5% de accidentes de motocicleta, 33,3% relacionados con caídas, 25% de accidentes con automóviles y 4,2% debidos a buceo en aguas poco profundas. Los niveles vertebrales afectados fueron columna cervical (44%), columna torácica (36%) y región toracolumbar (20%). El deterioro neurológico, de acuerdo con la Clasificación ASIA (American Spinal Injury Association) fue lesión completa o A en el 37,5% de los pacientes, lesiones incompletas B en 4,2%, lesión incompleta C en 12,5%, lesión incompleta D en 8,3% y 37,5% de las lesiones se clasificaron como incompletas E. Sesenta y cuatro por ciento de las intervenciones se realizaron por vía posterior y 36% para vía anterior. Conclusión: El perfil epidemiológico mantiene la tendencia del predominio de varones jóvenes, de las lesiones a nivel cervical y la presencia de lesiones de la médula espinal. Sin embargo, los accidentes de motocicleta y las caídas de altura son factores modificables por medidas de seguridad en el tránsito y en el trabajo, lo que puede cambiar la elevación de su prevalencia.

O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o pH e atividade antimicrobiana de pastas de oxido de zinco micro ou nanoparticulado (OZn) com ou sem hidroxido de calcio (HC). As medicacoes avaliadas foram OZn microparticulado + polietilenoglicol (PLG) 400; OZn nanoparticulado + PLG 400; PLG 400; HC + OZn microparticulado + PLG 400 e HC + OZn nanoparticulado + PLG 400. A analise do pH foi realizada entre 12 horas e 28 dias, usando um pHmetro digital. A atividade antimicrobiana frente Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC-9212), Candida albicans (ATCC-10231), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC-27853), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC-6538) e Kocuria rhizophila (ATCC-9341) foi determinada, em triplicata, pelo teste de difusao em agar. Os resultados submetidos ao teste Kruskal-Wallis e Dunn e ANOVA e Tukey com 5% de significancia. Os maiores valores de pH ocorreram para HC+ZnO, sendo maior para ZnO nanoparticulado apos 12 horas e 21 dias (p<0,05). A medicacao de HC+ZnO promoveu maior inibicao de crescimento sobre P. aeruginosa e menor sobre E. faecalis. As pastas de hidroxido de calico apresentam os maiores valores de pH atividade antimicrobiana com a associacao de oxido de zinco micro ou nanoparticulado.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the pH and antimicrobial activity of micro or nanoparticulate zinc oxide (ZnO) pastes with or without calcium hydroxide (CH). The following medications were evaluated: microparticulate ZnO + polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400; nanoparticulate ZnO + PEG 400; PEG 400; CH + microparticulate ZnO + PEG 400 and CH + nanoparticulate ZnO + PEG 400. The pH was assessed between 12 hours and 28 days, using a digital pH meter. The antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC-9212), Candida albicans (ATCC-10231), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC-27853), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC-6538) and Kocuria rhizophila (ATCC-9341) was determined in triplicate using agar diffusion test. The results were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn and ANOVA/Tukey tests with 5% significance. The highest pH values were found for CH+ZnO, with higher values for nanoparticulate ZnO after 12 hours and 21 days (p<0.05). CH+ZnO medication promoted higher growth inhibition against P. aeruginosa and lower against E. faecalis. Calcium hydroxide pastes have higher pH and antimicrobial activity when associated with either micro- or nanoparticulate zinc oxide.
