ABSTRACT This is paper we analyze the diet and body condition factor (Mi) of three endemic species inside and outside an environmental protection area, to compare the effectiveness of the protection area in providing a greater spectrum of food items and greater environmental well-being to ichthyofauna. The study area comprised streams of the Ribeira do Iguape River basin, Campos Gerais National Park (CGNP), Paraná state and its surroundings. Eleven streams were sampled inside and outside, using electric fishing. A Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance to investigate the composition of food items and a Permutational Analysis of Multivariate Dispersions was used to investigate the variability between food items. The Scaled Mass Index (Mi) of the body condition was used to determine the relative condition factor of each individual of each species. Regarding the diet, there were no significant differences between inside and outside in the composition and variability of food items, this similarity may be associated with existing environmental degradation inside. However, the Mi was significant, and only one species presented greater well-being inside, because inside streams receive greater allochthonous intake of riparian vegetation, but, when it comes to the two species that perform the link of the aquatic food web with the terrestrial, the opposite occurred. These results indicate that the studied fragment, under anthropic pressures, is currently unable to conserve its biodiversity. The inside has no Management Plan, the manager must elaborate and implement it as a first step so that the situation can be reverted and the conservation effectiveness ensured in this highly threatened area, characterized by being one of the most important remnants of the Atlantic Forest, having relevant ecosystem services from a rare humid forest of Araucaria.

RESUMO Neste trabalho, analisamos dieta e fator de condição corporal (Mi) de três espécies endêmicas dentro e fora de uma área de proteção ambiental, para comparar a efetividade da área protegida em subsidiar maior espectro de itens alimentares e maior bem-estar ambiental à ictiofauna. A área de estudo compreendeu riachos que fazem parte da bacia hidrográfica do Rio Ribeira de Iguape, interior e imediações do Parque Nacional dos Campos Gerais (PNCG), estado do Paraná. Foram amostrados 11 riachos dentro e fora, com auxílio de pesca elétrica. A Análise de Variância Multivarada Permutacional foi usada para investigar a composição dos itens alimentares e a Análise Permutacional de Dispersões Multivariadas para investigar a variabilidade entre os itens alimentares. O Índice de Massa Escalonado (Mi) de condição corporal foi usado para determinar o fator de condição relativo de cada indivíduo de cada espécie. Para a dieta analisada não houve diferenças significavas entre dentro e fora, na composição e na variabilidade de itens alimentares, esta similaridade pode estar associada a degradação ambiental existente dentro. Entretanto, o Mi foi significativo, sendo que somente uma espécie apresentou maior bem-estar dentro, porque os riachos de cabeceira de dentro recebem maior aporte alóctone de vegetação ripária, porém, quando se trata das duas espécies que realizam o elo da teia alimentar aquática com a terrestre ocorreu o contrário. Esses resultados indicam que o fragmento estudado, submetido a pressões antrópicas, apresenta-se incapaz de conservar essa biodiversidade. O interior não tem plano de manejo, o gestor deve elaborá-lo e implementá-lo como um primeiro passo para que a situação possa ser revertida e a efetividade da conservação assegurada nessa área altamente ameaçada, caracterizada por ser um dos remanescentes mais importantes da Mata Atlântica, possuindo relevantes serviços ecossistêmicos oriundos de uma rara floresta úmida de Araucária.

Abstract Functional diversity is an emergent approach in ecology that has been applied globally to better understand the relationships between organisms and the environment. However, assessing the functional diversity of freshwater fish is a challenge for scientists. Aiming to summarize the evolution of scientific knowledge on fish functional diversity, we performed a systematic review of the literature published from 1945 to 2021 using the Web of Science. Based on the 101 articles reviewed, we found that publications about functional diversity of fishes have increased over time, mainly in Neotropical, Indomalayan and Palearctic regions. Most studies were conducted in lotic ecosystems, especially to assess environmental impacts such as biological invasions and land use. Functional diversity has been assessed mainly by morphological traits that reflect feeding and locomotion dimensions. Functional richness was the most common index used in the studies. Our findings suggest that political neglect and lack of investments may hamper the research development in several places. The missing information about the functional traits of many species may limit the use of the functional approach. We also highlight the need for the incorporation of functional diversity in conservation programs once functional diversity is a key facet of biodiversity to maintain freshwater ecosystem functioning.

Resumo A diversidade funcional tem sido avaliada principalmente através de traços funcionais morfológicos que refletem as dimensões da alimentação e locomoção. A Riqueza Funcional foi a métrica mais comumente usada nos estudos. Esses resultados sugerem que a negligência política e a falta de investimentos podem dificultar o desenvolvimento de pesquisas em diversas regiões. A falta de informações sobre os traços funcionais de muitas espécies limita o uso da abordagem funcional. Destaca-se também a necessidade de incorporar a diversidade funcional em programas de conservação, uma vez que a diversidade funcional é uma faceta chave da biodiversidade para manter o funcionamento dos ecossistemas de água doce.

RESUMO O papel dos cladóceros no acoplamento da teia alimentar verde e marrom. Os cladóceros, importante comunidade zooplanctônica, são consumidores da base da cadeia alimentar dos ambientes aquáticos. O objetivo foi identificar a real contribuição dos produtores (fitoplâncton e biofilme perifítico) e do carbono orgânico particulado (COP) na biomassa dos cladóceros. As coletas foram realizadas em lagoas da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná, último trecho livre de barragens na segunda maior bacia da América do Sul. As razões isotópicas (δ¹³C e δ15N) e as contribuições de prováveis fontes de alimento para a biomassa de cladóceros foram medidas. Verificou-se valores enriquecidos de δ15N para o fitoplâncton de ambiente sob impacto antrópico, COP com valores de d13C semelhante a plantas C3 e diferenças na assinatura do d13C do fitoplâncton dos ambientes estudados. Ademais, que o fitoplâncton constituiu a maior fonte de carbono para os cladóceros (35% ou mais da biomassa dos cladóceros), seguido pelo COP (30% ou mais). Assim, o presente trabalho, além de enfatizar a importância dos cladóceros na ciclagem de nutrientes, destacou a necessidade de conservação dos ambientes no entorno dos lagos, uma vez que são fontes de matéria orgânica para as comunidades aquáticas. Além disso, os organismos zooplanctônicos analisados demonstraram seu papel na interconexão entre as cadeias alimentares verde e marrom, que há muito vêm sendo estudadas separadamente.

ABSTRACT Cladocerans, an important zooplankton community, are consumers from the base of the food web of aquatic environments. We investigated the contribution of producers (phytoplankton and periphytic biofilm) and particulate organic carbon (POC). Collections were carried out in lakes of the Upper Paraná River Floodplain, the last stretch free of dams in the second-largest South American basin. Isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) were measured, besides the contributions of probable food sources to the cladocerans biomass. The phytoplankton constituted the source of carbon for cladocerans, followed by POC. Thus this work, in addition to emphasizing the importance of cladocerans in nutrient cycling, highlighted the need for the conservation of environments surrounding the lakes as they are the sources of organic matter for aquatic communities. Besides, the analyzed zooplanktonic organisms demonstrated their role in the interconnection between the green and brown food webs, which have been studied separately for a long time.

Abstract Ontogenetic shifts in food preference reduces intraspecific competition as immature individuals eat different food types than adults. This diet plasticity could facilitate species’ ability to successfully invade and establish itself in a new environment, even when co-occurring with phylogenetically close species. Here, ontogenetic diet shifts of a non-native piranha species (Serrasalmus marginatus) was tested by analyzing the relationship between its body length and the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope signatures. Carbon stable isotope was not correlated to fish length, but positive significant correlation between δ15N values and fish length was found for the non-native piranha. Also, immature and adult S. marginatus showed low isotopic niche overlap. The correlation between fish length and δ15N, and the low trophic overlap between immature and adult, indicate that the non-native S. marginatus had ontogenetic shifts in food preference, which may be viewed as an additional mechanism underlying its successful establishment in the upper Paraná River. Our findings indicate that ontogenetic shifts in food preference may be an invasive trait that facilitates the establishment of non-native fish species in tropical aquatic systems.

Resumo: A Escarpa Devoniana (APAED), localizada no sul do Brasil, representa uma importante área de preservação ambiental composta por campos, matas de galeria, além de afloramentos rochosos e sítios arqueológicos. Atualmente, tramita na câmara dos deputados do estado do Paraná um projeto de lei estadual (PL 527/2016) que sugere a redução da área da APAED em aproximadamente 70% de sua área original (de 393.579 para 125.895 ha). Tal redução parece estar relacionada com interesses econômicos (principalmente agropecuária e mineração) no estado do Paraná. Caso aprovado, o PL 527/2016 permitirá que agricultores expandam suas atividades deliberadamente, tendo como consequência principal a supressão de áreas de floresta nativa. Com isso, espera-se perda de diversidade faunística, contaminação de água e solos e alteração nos ciclos de nutrientes, dado o aumento no uso de agroquímicos. Além das consequências ambientas diretas, podemos esperar o desaparecimento de elevado interesse geológico, reduzindo a geodiversidade local, além de substanciais perdas econômicas com ecoturismo. O Brasil é um dos países signatários da Convenção da Diversidade Biológica das Nações Unidas, onde se compromete a desenvolver estratégias que evitem a perda da biodiversidade e a degradação de ecossistemas até 2020. Assim, a aprovação desse projeto de lei é, no mínimo, contraditória considerando que existem poucas áreas de vegetação natural nessa região do país. Destacamos que a proposta de tais projetos vai contra a sustentabilidade no país e desconsideram o conhecimento científico gerado até então. Dessa forma, é necessário o desenvolvimento de objetivos políticos regionais e federais que garantam o desenvolvimento econômico de forma equilibrada, considerando a bio e geodiversidade local, e não a proposta de mecanismos que as destruam.

Abstract: The Devonian Escarpment (DEEPA), located in the south of Brazil, represents an important area of environmental preservation composed by grasslands, gallery forests, as well as rock outcrops and archaeological sites. A law project (LP 527/2016), which suggests a reduction of the DEEPA area in approximately 70% of its original area (from 393,579 to 125,895 ha), is currently being processed in the Paraná State House of Representatives. Such reduction seems to be related to economic interests (mainly agriculture and mining) in the state of Paraná. If approved, LP 527/2016 will allow farmers to deliberately expand their activities, with the suppression of natural forest as main consequence. Additionally, loss of faunal diversity, contamination of water and soils, and alteration in nutrient cycles are expected, due the intensive use of agrochemicals. In addition to the direct environmental consequences, we expect the disappearance of areas of high geological interest, reducing local geodiversity, as well as substantial economic losses with ecotourism. Brazil is a signatory to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, where it undertakes to develop strategies to prevent biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation by 2020. An approval of the LP would be contradictory, considering that there are few natural vegetation areas in this region of the country. We emphasize that the proposal of such projects goes against the sustainability in the country and disregard the scientific knowledge generated until then. Thus, it is necessary to develop regional and federal political objectives that guarantee economic development in a balanced way, considering the local bio and geodiversity, not the proposal of mechanisms that destroy them.

Resumo: A bacia do rio Ribeira de Iguape (Estado do Paraná) é altamente relevante para a preservação de remanescentes da Mata Atlântica. Os seus altos níveis de diversidade e de endemismo de peixes explicam a dinâmica fluvial promovida pelo Arco de Ponta Grossa, estrutura geológica que promove eventos de captura de cabeceira e de isolamento entre as drenagens do alto rio Paraná, do rio Iguaçu e do rio Ribeira de Iguape. Aqui, nosso objetivo foi fornecer um inventário inédito para riachos de cabeceira da bacia do rio Ribeira de Iguape nos limites do Arco de Ponta Grossa. Encontramos 29 espécies de peixes representando quatro ordens e nove famílias. Siluriformes foi a ordem mais rica seguida por Characiformes. Nove espécies apresentaram alta abundância de indivíduos amostrados, contribuindo com 87,8% das coletas. Quatro espécies apareceram em menos de 25% dos locais amostrados (ocasionais), e seis espécies apareceram em mais de 50 % (constantes). Identificamos três espécies não descritas e uma (Coptodon rendalli) não nativa. Duas espécies tiveram sua distribuição geográfica ampliada e, a presença de Astyanax bifasciatus, endêmica para a bacia do rio Iguaçu, ratifica eventos recentes de captura de cabeceira entre drenagens costeiras e aquelas que fluem para dentro do continente. Estudos de divisores biogeográficos são necessários para explicar os processos de origem e dispersão de espécies a fim de direcionar estudos sobre diversidade e ações de manejo preventivas. Coptodon rendalli (Tilápia) é um registro alarmante sobre a introdução de espécies na região.

Abstract: The rio Ribeira de Iguape basin (Paraná State) is highly relevant for the preservation of remnants of the Atlantic Forest. Its high levels of diversity and fish endemism explain the river dynamics promoted by the Ponta Grossa Arch, a geological structure that promotes headwater capture and isolation between the upper rio Paraná drainage, the rio Iguaçu and the rio Ribeira de Iguape. Here, our objective was to provide an unprecedented inventory for headwater streams of the rio Ribeira de Iguape basin at the boundaries of the Ponta Grossa Arch. We found 29 species of fish representing four orders and nine families. Siluriformes was the richest order followed by Characiformes. Nine species presented high abundance of sampled individuals, contributing with 87.8% of the collections. Four species appeared in less than 25% of the sampled sites (occasional), and six species appeared in more than 50% (constant). We identified three non-described species and one non-native (Coptodon rendalli). Two species had their geographical distribution extended and the presence of Astyanax bifasciatus, endemic to the Iguaçu river basin, ratifies recent events of headwater capture between coastal drainages and those that flow into the continent. Studies of biogeographic divisors are necessary to explain the origin and dispersion processes of species in order to direct studies on diversity and preventive management actions. Coptodon rendalli (Tilapia) is an alarming record on the introduction of species in the region.

RESUMO A variabilidade isotópica e as contribuições autóctones (biomassa microbiana do sedimento, fitoplâncton e perifíton) e alóctone (biomassa microbiana do solo) assim como as principais fontes de carbono para o peixe detritívoro Prochilodus lineatus foram investigadas em três diferentes ambientes, da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná. A composição isotópica das fontes de carbono e dos consumidores variaram significativamente entre os ambientes estudados, e os recursos alóctones, representados pelo fitoplâncton, foram os mais utilizados pela espécie, seguido pelo perifíton e biomassa do sedimento microbiano. A espécie utilizou fontes de carbono distintas em cada ambiente. Este estudo sugere que características inerentes a cada ambiente, assim como o tamanho do ambiente, o período de seca, ações antropogênicas e produtividade do fitoplâncton favorecem o uso dos recursos alóctones pela espécie estudada. Portanto, estudos na planície de inundação devem empregar uma abordagem eco-hidrológicas que quantifique a magnitude dos subsídios energéticos, bem como as vias energéticas aos consumidores, o conhecimento acerca da seletividade das espécies de detritívoros e o efeito dos diferentes usos da terra.

ABSTRACT The stable carbon isotopic variability and the contributions of autochthonous (sediment microbial biomass, phytoplankton, and periphyton) and allochthonous (soil microbial biomass) sources available to the detritivorous fish Prochilodus lineatus were investigated in three environments of the floodplain of the Upper Paraná River. The isotopic composition of carbon sources and fish varied significantly among the studied environments. The autochthonous resources, represented by the phytoplankton, were the most assimilated by the species, followed by periphyton and sediment microbial biomass. The species used the sources differently in each environment. This study suggests that the inherent characteristics of this area, as well as the size of the watershed, the dry season, anthropogenic actions, and phytoplankton productivity, favor the use of autochthonous resources by the species studied. Therefore, studies in the floodplain should employ an eco-hydrological approach that quantifies the magnitude of energy subsidies, as well as an access route to consumers, knowledge about the selectivity of detritivorous species and the effects of different land uses.

RESUMO Considerando que o comportamento de anti-predação de peixes-presas podem variar de acordo com a estratégia de caça de predadores, investigaram-se experimentalmente as respostas fisiológicas de cardumes de Astyanax bimaculatus (Linnaeus, 1758) na presença de duas espécies de peixes piscívoros com diferentes modos de caça: senta-espera e busca ativa. Além disso, avaliou-se a influência das condições de visibilidade subaquática sobre a interação entre predadores e presas. Para isso, realizou-se um experimento para testar as hipóteses de que (i) os níveis plasmáticos de cortisol e glicose variam de acordo com a estratégia de caça dos peixes piscívoros, e (ii) em ambiente com elevada turbidez não haverá redução nos níveis plasmáticos de glicose e cortisol devido à incapacidade da presa em reconhecer com precisão os predadores através de estímulos não visuais. Os resultados evidenciam que a presença de peixes piscívoros aumenta os níveis plasmáticos de cortisol das presas, mas não houve diferença significativa entre os tratamentos com piscívoros de diferentes estratégias de caça. Não foi observada alteração significativa nos níveis de glicose plasmática entre tratamentos com água transparente e água túrbida. Assim, conclui-se que as mudanças fisiológicas na espécie de peixes-presa utilizada não variam com o modo de caça do predador e é, portanto, necessário considerar a habilidade das presas de reconhecer e avaliar a ameaça de predação, independentemente da estratégia de caça do piscívoro.

ABSTRACT Considering that the anti-predation behaviour of prey fishes may vary with predator hunting strategy, we experimentally investigated the physiological responses of Astyanax bimaculatus (Linnaeus, 1758) shoals to the presence of two piscivorous fish species with different hunting modes: sit-and-wait and active pursuit. In addition, we evaluated the influence of underwater visibility conditions on the interaction between predator and prey. We tested the hypotheses that: (i) prey plasma cortisol and glucose levels vary according to piscivore hunting strategy, and (ii) no reduction in plasma glucose and cortisol levels takes place in turbid environments due to the inability of prey to accurately recognise predators by non-visual signals. The results revealed that the presence of piscivorous fish increased plasma cortisol levels in prey, with no significant difference recorded between the two hunting strategy treatments. We also observed no significant change in plasma glucose levels in different water transparency conditions. Thus, we conclude that physiological changes in the selected prey fish do not vary with predator hunting mode, and it is therefore necessary to consider the ability of the prey to recognise and evaluate danger, regardless of piscivore hunting strategy.

RESUMO Considerando a importância de folhas da vegetação ripária como fonte energética para riachos de pequeno porte, este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a contribuição de biomassa de folhas para o sistema e a dinâmica de aporte temporal. Para tanto, amostras mensais de julho de 2008 a junho de 2009 foram coletadas utilizando quatro amostradores instalados em três riachos, a fim de coletar os aportes vertical, lateral e terrestre e o estoque bentônico. Foram testadas as hipóteses de que: (1) o aporte de biomassa de folhas é maior após períodos de estresse hídrico; e (2) a biomassa do estoque bentônico aumenta com o incremento dos aportes lateral e vertical. As folhas representaram, em média, 71,9% de todo o material alóctone amostrado, com variação sazonal significativa ao longo do ano. Os picos de entrada de folhas foram registrados em setembro-outubro, após um período de aumento na pluviosidade, e também em janeiro, após decréscimo na pluviosidade. A maior entrada de folhas se deu pelo aporte lateral.

ABSTRACT Considering the importance of the riparian vegetation leaves as an energetic source to first order streams, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the leaf biomass contribution to the system and its temporal dynamics. With this purpose, monthly samples from July 2008 to June 2009 were collected using four sampling devices installed in three streams, in order to collect the vertical, lateral and terrestrial loads, and the benthic stock. We tested the following hypothesis: (1) leaf biomass input is higher after hydric stress periods; and (2) benthic stock biomass increase with higher loads from vertical and lateral entrances. Leaves represented 71.9% (on average) of all sampled allochthonous matter, with seasonal significant variation along the studied year. Peaks of leaf input were registered in September-October, after an increase in rainfall, and also in January, after a decrease in rainfall. Leaf input was higher in the lateral load.

RESUMO Variações na densidade energética (E D ) e no fator de condição relativo (K n ) de juvenis de Prochilodus lineatus foram investigadas buscando identificar se estas duas variáveis respondem de forma semelhante aos fatores ambientais. Nossa hipótese é que o nível fluviométrico, em diferentes subsistemas da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná, influencia positivamente o E D e K n de juvenis da espécie. Temporalmente, os valores de E D e K n estiveram relacionados mais diretamente a dinâmica de pulsos de inundação presente na planície. Espacialmente, os menores valores de E D e K n foram verificados no ambiente mais diretamente afetado pela operação das barragens, o subsistema Paraná. Apesar da densidade de energia e do fator de condição não demonstrarem resultados semelhantes para juvenis em algumas das análises, a avaliação de ambos os parâmetros forneceu uma ferramenta complementar e informações adicionais, que permitiu uma investigação mais detalhada dos processos dinâmicos temporais e espaciais nesta várzea neotropical. Conclui-se que a variação do nível de água, em diferentes subsistemas da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná, afeta consideravelmente a condição corpórea e energética de P. lineatus. Nós sugerimos que impactos que modifiquem este efeito devem ser mitigados ou evitados para manter o estoque de peixes e promover a integridade do ecossistema.

ABSTRACT Variations in energetic density (E D ) and the relative condition factor (K n ) of juveniles of Prochilodus lineatus were investigated to identify whether these two variables respond similarly to environmental factors. We hypothesized that fluviometric levels in different sub-basins of the Upper Paraná River floodplain positively influence the E D and K n of juvenile fish. Temporally, the values of E D and K n were linked more directly to the dynamics of the flood pulses on the plain. Spatially, the lowest values of E D and K n were observed in the environment that was directly affected by the operation of dams, the sub-basin Paraná. Although the energy density and condition factor did not show similar results for juveniles in some of the analyses, the evaluation of both parameters provided a complementary tool and additional information that enabled a more accurate investigation of the temporal and spatial dynamic processes in this Neotropical floodplain. We conclude that water level variations in different sub-basins of the Upper Paraná River floodplain considerably affect the relative condition factor and energy status of P. lineatus . We suggest that the impacts of this modification should be mitigated or avoided in order to maintain fish stocks and promote ecosystem integrity.

Resumo Este estudo investigou a dieta de quatro caracídeos [Hyphessobrycon eques (Steindachner, 1882), Odontostilbe pequira (Steindachner, 1882), Psellogrammus kennedyi (Eigenmann, 1903) e Serrapinnus calliurus (Boulenger, 1900) ], que coexistem em duas lagoas, e verificaram-se possíveis diferenças espaciais no fitness dessas populações. O objetivo principal foi analisar se essas espécies demonstram melhor fitness de acordo com o valor nutricional do recurso consumido. Desta forma, espera-se que as espécies demonstrem melhores condições nutricionais (demonstrado pelo fator de condição relativo) durante o forrageamento de itens de origem animal, assim como o contrario é esperado ao consumir itens de origem vegetal e detritos. A amostragem foi realizada em agosto de 2011. A dieta foi avaliada através da análise do conteúdo estomacal e o fator de condição relativo foi calculado para cada indivíduo amostrado, obtendo-se um valor médio para cada população. As espécies exibiram elevada plasticidade alimentar; H. eques e P. kennedyi alteraram a maioria dos itens alimentares de suas dietas entre as lagoas estudadas. Apesar destas variações, o fator de condição não variou espacialmente para qualquer espécie. Os resultados indicam que estas espécies possuem adaptações fisiológicas que lhes permitem obter o máximo de energia a partir do alimento, mesmo que tenha baixo valor nutricional, ou que o peixe pode compensar o consumo de alimentos com baixo valor nutricional, aumentando a taxa de consumo. Assim, independentemente do tipo de recursos consumidos, estes recursos cumpriram as necessidades metabólicas dos peixes nas lagoas estudadas.

Abstract This study investigated the diet of four characids [Hyphessobrycon eques (Steindachner, 1882), Odontostilbe pequira (Steindachner, 1882), Psellogrammus kennedyi (Eigenmann, 1903) and Serrapinnus calliurus (Boulenger, 1900) ] coexisting in two lagoons and checked for possible spatial differences and the influence on population fitness. The main goal was check if these species show better fitness according to the nutritional value of the food resource consumed. In this way, it is expected that the species show improved nutritional conditions (evidenced by the relative condition factor) when foraging for items of animal origin, and the reverse is expected when consuming items of plant origin and detritus. Sampling was conducted in August 2011. The diet was evaluated by analyzing contents and calculating the relative condition factor for each sampled individual, obtaining a mean value for each population. Species exhibited high food plasticity; H. eques and P. kennedyi altered most their diets from a lagoon to another. Despite these variations, the condition factor showed no significant spatial variation for any species. The results indicated that these species have physiological adaptations that allow them to obtain the maximum energy from food, even if it has low nutritional value, or that fish can compensate for the consumption of low nutritional food by increasing the consumption rate. Thus, regardless of the type of resources consumed, these have met the metabolic needs of the fish in the studied lagoons.

RESUMO Análise de dieta, densidade energética (DE) e fator de condição relativo (Kn ) foram utilizados para investigar a assimilação energética do peixe invasor Hemiodus orthonops sob diferentes condições ambientais da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná. As coletas ocorreram em junho e setembro de 2013 e 2014. O teor de nutrientes foi obtido para o sedimento. A dieta foi combinada no Índice Alimentar (IAi%), a DE foi expressa em Kcal/g de peso seco, o Kn foi calculado através de: Kn = Wt/We, onde Wt é o peso total e We o peso esperado. Detrito/sedimento prevaleceu nos estômagos dos espécimes do Ivinhema e Baía, enquanto Alga foi o principal item no Paraná, refletindo a disponibilidade de recursos. A DE e Kn dos indivíduos do Ivinhema foram os maiores, consequência da qualidade do alimento e do menor gasto em procura e manipulação do alimento. Os indivíduos do Paraná registraram os menores valores de DE, mas elevados valores de Kn , devido ao consumo de alga, um recurso alimentar rico em nutrientes. Baía apresentou elevada concentração de alumínio no sedimento e reduzidos valores de pH, o que contribuiu com a redução do valor nutricional do detrito e dos valores de DE e Kn dos indivíduos. Concluindo, H. orthonops é capaz de se beneficiar da disponibilidade de recursos nos diferentes ambientes, garantindo seu estabelecimento.

ABSTRACT Diet, energy density (ED) and relative condition factor (Kn ) were used to investigate the energetic assimilation of the invasive fish Hemiodus orthonops under different environmental condition of the upper rio Paraná floodplain. Samples were taken in June and September 2013 and 2014. Nutrient content was determined for sediment. The diet was combined in the Food Index (IAi%), ED was expressed in Kcal/g of dry weight and Kn was calculated by: Kn = Wt/We, where Wt is the total weight and We the expected weight. Detritus/sediment prevailed in the stomachs of specimens from Ivinhema and Baia, while Algae was the main item in Paraná, reflecting the resource availability. ED and Kn from Ivinhema specimens were the greatest, consequence of the quality of food and lower spent on searching and handling food. The Paraná specimens showed lower ED values, but higher Kn values, due to algae consumption, a nutrient-rich resource. Baia presented high aluminum concentration on the sediment and the lower pH values, which contribute to reduce the nutritional value of the detritus and the ED and Kn values of their specimens. In conclusion, H.orthonops is capable to take advantage of the resources availability in the different environments, ensuring their establishment.

Resumo Objetivo: O conteúdo calórico evidencia a quantidade de energia que permanece na folha e que pode ser libertado para a cadeia trófica aquática. O presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar o conteúdo calórico de folhas de cinco espécies de árvores de vegetação ripária e avaliar sua variação interespecífica e sazonal (seca e chuva). Métodos As coletas foram realizadas trimestralmente durante um ano, na área de vegetação ripária de um fragmento florestal no sul do Brasil. Os locais de amostragem foram localizados ao longo da vegetação ripária desses dois corpos de água, e devido à sua proximidade e ausência de diferenças estatísticas significativas do conteúdo calórico, analisados em conjunto. Resultados O conteúdo calórico variou significativamente entre as espécies e entre todos os pares de espécies, com exceção de Nectandra cuspidata Ness e Calophyllum brasiliensis Cambess. Duas espécies apresentaram diferenças significativas entre estações, Sloanea guianensis (Aubl.) Ben e Calophyllum brasiliensis Cambess. Conclusões A ausência de diferenças significativas sazonais no teor energético de algumas espécies pode ser devido às características da floresta tropical, em que a temperatura não variou significativamente entre as estações do ano. No entanto, a diferença de energia entre as espécies e de sazonalidade para algumas espécies, enfatiza a necessidade de uma inspeção preliminar no teor energético, antes de traçar fluxos de energia, em detrimento do uso de um único valor para toda a vegetação ripária.

Abstract Aim: The measurement of the caloric content evidences the amount of energy that remains in the leaf and that can be released to the aquatic trophic chain. We assessed the energy content of leaves from five riparian tree species of a forest fragment in south Brazil and analyzed whether leaf caloric content varied between leaf species and between seasons (dry and wet). The studied sites are located in Northwest of Paraná State, inside a Semi-Deciduous Forest fragment beside two headwater streams. Methods Sampling sites were located along the riparian vegetation of these two water bodies, and due to its proximity and absence of statistical differences of caloric values, analyzed as one compartment. Results Caloric content varied significantly among species and among all pairs of species, with exception of Nectandra cuspidata Ness and Calophyllum brasiliensis Cambess. Two species presented significant differences between seasons, Sloanea guianensis (Aubl.) Ben and Calophyllum brasiliensis Cambess. Conclusions The absence of significant seasonal differences of energy content for some species may be due to the characteristics of the tropical forest, in which temperature did not varied dramatically between seasons. However, the energy differed between species and seasons for some species, emphasizing the necessity of a preliminary inspection of energy content, before tracing energy fluxes instead of using a single value to all species from riparian vegetation.

Este estudo investigou o nicho isotópico de duas espécies de peixes, uma exótica e outra nativa. A hipótese testada foi a de que estas espécies teriam pouca ou nenhuma sobreposição de nicho isotópico. Esta hipótese foi testada adotando o conceito de nicho isotópico e as métricas tróficas de Layman. Uma considerável sobreposição de nicho isotópico foi observada entre as duas espécies, principalmente para a exótica que teve maior porcentagem de sobreposição, indicando uma competição interespecífica por recursos alimentares. As métricas de Layman também mostraram que esta espécie provavelmente explora um conjunto de recursos alimentares mais específico quando comparada a espécie nativa. A espécie nativa provavelmente tem a habilidade de explorar um conjunto de recursos mais amplo, demonstrado pelos altos valores que exibiu para as métricas de Layman. Jovens e adultos da espécie nativa mostraram menor sobreposição nos nichos isotópicos. Isto indica que eles provavelmente adotaram estratégias de forrageamento diferentes, minimizando a competição intraespecífica. Evidências de que a espécie exótica explora um conjunto de recursos mais restrito e que a espécie nativa tem um maior nicho isotópico e possivelmente sofre menor competição intraespecífica, indica que a espécie nativa pode tolerar a presença da espécie exótica, promovendo a manutenção e sobrevivência de sua população mesmo sob um possível efeito de competição imposto pela espécie exótica.

This study investigated the isotopic niches of two fish species, one exotic and one native. It was hypothesized that these species would show little or no isotopic niche overlap. This hypothesis was tested with the isotopic niche concept and the trophic Layman's metrics. A considerable isotopic niche overlap was observed between the species, mainly for the exotic that showed the greater percentage of overlapping, indicating an interspecific competition for food resources. Layman's metrics also showed this species probably exploits a more specific array of food resources when compared with the native species. The native species probably has the ability to exploit a wider array of resources, highlighted by the higher values given for the Layman's metrics. The juveniles and adults of native species showed minor overlapping between the isotopic niches. This indicates that they have probably adopted different foraging strategies, minimizing intraspecific competition. Evidences that the exotic species explores a narrower range of resources and that the native species has a greater isotopic niche and possibly suffer less intraspecific competition, indicates that the native species can tolerate the presence of the exotic species and promote survival and maintenance of its population even under possible competition effects imposed by the exotic species.

Esta revisión procuró investigar las fuentes de energía para las especies de peces detritívoras en la llanura de inundación. Los estudios han demostrado que las transformaciones ambientales que causan los cambios en la vegetación terrestre afectan principalmente la base de los recursos en estos planos inundables, tales como el detritus. En los ambientes acuáticos, especialmente las llanuras de inundación, la mayoría de los procesos metabólicos están sustentados por el detritus terrestre, y esta función es responsable de mantener las redes detritívoras. Una forma de evaluar estos cambios es a través de estudios isotópicos de la materia orgánica, los cuales permiten obtener información sobre su cantidad y su calidad mediante el análisis de la biomasa microbiana. Este enfoque es necesario para comprender las interacciones entre la dinámica de la materia orgánica y sus efectos ecológicos, lo que permite a su vez la valoración de estos recursos. Sin embargo, se concluye que los estudios futuros también deben cuantificar la magnitud de estos subsidios energéticos, asícomo las vías de acceso de los consumidores acuáticos, lo cual debe evaluarse en cuencas hidrográficas de diferentes tamaños y con diversos usos de la tierra.

The present review investigated the sources of energy for detritivorous fish species in floodplains. Recent studies have shown that environmental changes that alter the terrestrial vegetation affect essentially the resource base in these areas, such as the detritus. In aquatic environments, especially floodplains, a major part of metabolic processes is supported by terrestrial detritus, which accounts for maintaining the detritivorous food chain. Thus, one way to evaluate environments changes is through isotopic studies of organic matter, which allows acquiring information about the quantity and quality of organic matter. This approach is required for understanding the interactions between the organic matter dynamics and its ecological effects, allowing the monitoring of these resources. However, researches on the energy flow in food chains should also employ an approach that quantifies the magnitude of these food subsidies, as also the access routes of aquatic consumers, in watersheds of different sizes and in diverse land uses.
