ABSTRACT Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the projects that offer guidance for physical activity (PA) had to be adapted to the remote format. This study aimed at assessing the effects of a remote PA intervention on the cardiovascular risk and physical fitness of the individuals engaged in these projects. Thus, 29 participants of the Brazilian project known as Projeto Exercício e Coração (Exercise and Heart Project) (66±5 years) were instructed to perform 2 walking sessions, 1 aerobic exercise video class and 2 muscle strength video classes per week with each activity lasting 30 min and performed at moderate intensity. At baseline (pre) and after 8 weeks (post), markers of cardiovascular risk and physical fitness were evaluated and compared by using paired t-tests or Wilcoxon signed rank tests considering p≤0.05. When comparing pre- and post-intervention evaluations, there was a significant reduction in waist circumference (95.9±11.3 vs. 94.7±11.3 cm, p=0.013) and significant increases in cardiorespiratory fitness (117±21 vs. 123±23 steps, p=0.019), upper limb strength (23±6 vs. 25±6 repetitions, p=0.003), abdominal endurance (20±9 vs. 22±10 repetitions, p= 0.002) and overall physical fitness (-0.04±3.55 vs. 1.30±4.10, p=0.000). In conclusion, the remote intervention improved general physical fitness, increasing cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength and endurance, in addition to reducing central obesity.

RESUMO Devido à pandemia da COVID-19, os projetos de orientação de atividade física (AF) tiveram que adaptar suas atuações para o formato remoto. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos de uma intervenção remota de AF no risco cardiovascular e na aptidão física em participantes desses projetos. Para isso, 29 participantes do Projeto Exercício e Coração (66±5 anos) foram orientados a realizar, 2 caminhadas, 1 videoaula de exercícios aeróbicos e 2 videoaulas de exercícios de força muscular por semana, sendo cada atividade realizada por 30 min e em intensidade moderada. No início e após 8 semanas, foram medidos marcadores de risco cardiovascular e de aptidão física, que foram comparados por testes t-student ou Wilcoxon, considerando-se p≤0,05. Comparando-se as avaliações pré e pós-intervenção, houve redução da circunferência da cintura (95,9±11,3 vs. 94,7±11,3 cm, p=0,013) e aumento da capacidade cardiorrespiratória (117±21 vs. 123±23 passos, p=0,019), da força dos membros superiores (23±6 vs. 25±6 repetições, p=0,003), da resistência abdominal (20±9 vs. 22±10 repetições, p=0,002) e da aptidão física geral (-0,04±3,55 vs. 1,30±4,10, p=0,000). Em conclusão, a intervenção remota aumentou a aptidão física geral, aumentando a capacidade cardiorrespiratória, a força e a resistência muscular, além de reduzir a obesidade central.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

RESUMO O Parque Minhocão foi criado pela interdição do tráfico de veículos em uma via elevada em determinados dias e horários. Por essa peculiaridade, seus frequentadores podem apresentar características distintas das dos frequentadores de parques tradicionais e que precisam ser conhecidas para embasar atuações de saúde pública neste local. Este estudo investigou essas características a partir de uma amostra de 265 participantes de uma intervenção de saúde neste parque. Observou-se que a população era formada por adultos jovens (45,3%) ou de meia idade (36,6%), com nível de escolaridade superior (46%) e de diferentes classes econômicas, que moravam a até 1000 m do parque (75,5%) e deslocavam-se para ele a pé (84,5%), principalmente nos fins de semana (56,2%), e fazendo esse percurso em até 10 min (71,3%). A maioria era ativa no lazer (60,4%) e usava o parque para realizar atividades físicas (84,9%), especialmente caminhada (65,7%) e corrida (32,5%). Essas características, em geral, foram semelhantes entre os sexos e as faixas etárias. Em conclusão: os frequentadores adultos do Parque Minhocão são, principalmente, jovens e de meia idade, fisicamente ativos, de diferentes classes econômicas, que moram nas imediações do parque e o frequentam para praticar atividades físicas de lazer, sobretudo caminhada e corrida.

ABSTRACT Parque Minhocão was created by the interdiction of an elevated road for traffic on certain days and times. Because of this peculiarity, its users may have different characteristics from those of the users of traditional parks that need to be known to support heath action on this place. This study investigated these characteristics from a sample of 265 participants of a health champaign conducted in this park. It was observed that the park users were formed by young (45.3%) or middle-aged (36.6%) adults, with higher education level (46%) and from different economic classes, living up to 1000 m from the park (75.5%) and doing the route to the park on foot (84.5%), mainly on weekends (56, 2%), in up to 10 min (71.3%). Most were active in leisure time (60.4%) and used the park mainly for performing physical activities (84.9%), especially walking (65.7%) and running (32.5%). These characteristics, in general, were similar between genders and age groups. In conclusion, the adult users of Parque Minhocão are mainly young and middle aged, physically active, from different economic classes who live in its vicinity and go to the park to practice leisure physical activities, especially walking and running.

ABSTRACT Objective This study investigated the familial aggregation and heritability of markers of metabolic risk, physical activity, and physical fitness in nuclear families from Muzambinho (Minas Gerais, Brazil). Subjects and methods The study included members of 139 families, comprising 97 fathers (aged 40 ± 7 years), 129 mothers (35 ± 6 years), 136 sons (12 ± 4 years), and 121 daughters (12 ± 5 years). Evaluated markers included (A) body mass index, waist circumference, glycemia, and cholesterolemia, as metabolic risk markers; (B) total weekly volume of physical activity, as a physical activity marker; and (C) relative muscle strength, as a physical fitness marker. Correlations between family members and heritability (h2) were estimated using the software S.A.G.E. Results Significant familial correlations were obtained between parents-offspring for glycemia and cholesterolemia (both ρ = 0.21, p < 0.05) and relative muscle strength (ρ = 0.23, p < 0.05), and between siblings for waist circumference, glycemia, total weekly volume of physical activity, and relative muscle strength (ρ variation 0.25 to 0.36, p < 0.05). Heritability values were significant for almost all variables (h2 variations: 20% to 57% for metabolic risk markers, 22% for the total weekly volume of physical activity, and 50% for relative muscle strength), except for waist circumference (h2 = 15%, p = 0.059). Conclusion The presence of significant correlations between family members and/or significant heritability strengthens the possible genetic and/or common familial environment influence on metabolic risk markers, total weekly volume of physical activity, and relative muscle strength.

RESUMO Introdução: A relação negativa entre atividade física, aptidão física e risco cardiovascular está bem estabelecida em populações com baixos níveis de atividade física. Objetivo: O presente estudo investigou essa relação em adultos de Muzambinho, Minas Gerais, uma população com alta taxa de indivíduos fisicamente ativos. Métodos: Participaram 237 indivíduos (132 mulheres), na maioria jovens (44,3% entre 20 e 39 anos). Foram avaliados indicadores de risco cardiovascular (índice de massa corporal, circunferência da cintura, glicemia de jejum, colesterolemia de jejum e pressão arterial sistólica e diastólica), atividade física (volume semanal de atividade física total) e aptidão física (aptidão aeróbica e força manual relativa). Resultados: Mais de 90% dos indivíduos foram classificados como ativos (praticavam atividade física por mais de 150 min/semana). A regressão linear identificou associação negativa da força manual relativa e da aptidão aeróbica ao índice de massa corporal e a circunferência da cintura, bem como associação positiva da força manual relativa à pressão arterial diastólica. Os indicadores de atividade física e aptidão física não se associaram ao risco cardiovascular global. Conclusão: Nessa população, a relação inversa entre atividade física, aptidão física e risco cardiovascular limitou-se aos indicadores de aptidão física e aos de obesidade, sugerindo que em populações com alta taxa de indivíduos fisicamente ativos, o aumento da aptidão física, mas não da atividade física, pode ajudar a reduzir a obesidade. ABSTRACT Introduction: The negative relationship between physical activity, physical fitness, and cardiovascular risk is well established in populations with low levels of physical activity. Objective: The present study investigated this relationship in adults from Muzambinho, Minas Gerais, a population with a high rate of physically active individuals. Methods: Two hundred and thirty-seven individuals (132 women), mostly young adults (44.3% between 20 and 39 years) were assessed. Cardiovascular risk predictors (body mass index, waist circumference, fasting blood glucose, fasting cholesterol, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure), physical activity (total weekly volume of total physical activity) and physical fitness (aerobic fitness and relative hand strength) were measured. Results: More than 90% of the individuals were classified as active (they practiced physical activity for more than 150 min/week). Linear regression identified a negative association of relative hand strength and aerobic fitness to body mass index and waist circumference, as well as a positive association of relative hand strength with diastolic blood pressure. The indicators of physical activity and physical fitness showed no association with global cardiovascular risk. Conclusion: In this population, the inverse relationship between physical activity, physical fitness and cardiovascular risk was limited to physical fitness and obesity indicators, suggesting that in populations with high rates of physically active individuals, the increase in physical fitness, but not in physical activity, can help reduce obesity. RESUMEN Introducción: La relación negativa entre actividad física, aptitud física y riesgo cardiovascular está bien establecida en poblaciones con bajos niveles de actividad física. Objetivo: Este estudio investigó esta relación en adultos de Muzambinho, Minas Gerais, una población con una alta tasa de individuos físicamente activos. Métodos: Participaron 237 individuos (132 mujeres), en su mayoría jóvenes (44,3% entre los 20 y 39 años). Se evaluaron indicadores de riesgo cardiovascular (índice de masa corporal, circunferencia de la cintura, glucosa en ayunas, colesterol en ayunas y presión arterial sistólica y diastólica), actividad física (volumen semanal de actividad física total) y aptitud física (capacidad aeróbica y fuerza relativa de la mano). Resultados: Más del 90% de los individuos fueron clasificados como activos (practicaban actividad física por más de 150 min/semana). La regresión lineal identificó asociación negativa de la fuerza relativa de la mano y la capacidad aeróbica al índice de masa corporal y la circunferencia de la cintura, así como la asociación positiva de la fuerza relativa de la mano a la presión arterial diastólica. Los indicadores de actividad física y aptitud física no se asociaron al riesgo cardiovascular global. Conclusión: En esta población, la relación inversa entre actividad física, aptitud física y riesgo cardiovascular se limitó a los indicadores de aptitud física y obesidad, lo que sugiere que en poblaciones con alta tasa de individuos físicamente activos, el aumento de la aptitud física, pero no de la actividad física, puede ayudar a reducir la obesidad. OBJETIVO: Avaliar, numa situação real de atuação prática, o efeito da prescrição individualizada de caminhada sem supervisão da prática sobre o risco cardiovascular e a aptidão física de usuários de um parque público. MÉTODOS: 186 sujeitos (62 ± 10 anos) foram orientados a caminhar pelo menos 3x/sem, por 30 min, com intensidade de 50 a 80% da frequência cardíaca de reserva e a fazer alongamentos antes e após a caminhada. A aptidão física e os fatores de risco cardiovascular foram avaliados pré e pós-intervenção. A análise dos dados foi dividida em duas fases: 1) análise na amostra total; 2) análise nos indivíduos com fatores de risco alterados. Os dados foram comparados pelo teste t pareado. RESULTADOS: Na amostra total, a aptidão física melhorou nos testes de marcha estacionária (+8,1 ± 14,5 passos, p < 0,05), impulsão vertical (+0,5 ± 2,7 cm, p < 0,05), flexibilidade lombar (+1,1 ± 4,7 cm, p < 0,05) e flexibilidade de ombro (+1,2 ± 2,1 cm, p < 0,05). Não ocorreram alterações nos fatores de risco cardiovascular, com exceção da redução da pressão arterial diastólica (-0,9 ± 6,0 mmHg, p < 0,05). Entretanto, nos subgrupos com fatores alterados, observou-se reduções significantes das pressões arteriais sistólica e diastólica (-13,3 ± 16,9 e -5,8 ± 8,3 mmHg, p < 0,05, respectivamente) nos hipertensos, da colesterolemia total (-19,5 ± 33,5 mg/dl, p < 0,05) nos hipercolesterolêmicos e da circunferência da cintura (-1,0 ± 4,7 cm, p < 0,05) e do índice cintura-quadril (-0,01 ± 0,04, p < 0,05) nos com obesidade central. CONCLUSÃO: Numa situação real de atuação, a prescrição de caminhada sem supervisão da prática foi efetiva em melhorar a aptidão física da amostra geral e em diminuir o risco cardiovascular específico dos indivíduos com fatores de risco.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, at a real practical condition, the effects of individualized prescription of walking without supervision of practice on cardiovascular risk and fitness in users of a public park. METHODS: One hundred, eighty six subjects (62 ± 10 years) were instructed to walk at least 3 times/week, during 30min, at an intensity of 50-80% of heart rate reserve and encouraged to realize stretching exercises before and after walking. Physical fitness and cardiovascular risk factors were evaluated pre and post-intervention. Data analyze was divided in 2 phases: 1) role sample analysis; and 2) analysis on subjects with altered cardiovascular risk factors. Data were compared by paired t test. RESULTS: Considering the whole sample, physical fitness improved in the following tests: stationary gate (8.1 ± 14.5 paces, p < 0.05), vertical jump (0.5 ± 2.7 cm, p < 0.05), lumbar flexibility (1.1 ± 4.7 cm, p < 0.05) and shoulder flexibility (1.2 ± 2.1 cm, p < 0.05). No significant change was observed in cardiovascular risk factors, excepted by a reduction on diastolic blood pressure (-0.9 ± 6.0 mmHg, p < 0.05). On the other hand, considering the subjects with altered cardiovascular risk factors, a significant reduction was observed on systolic and diastolic blood pressures (-13.3 ± 16.9 and -5.8 ± 8.3 mmHg, p < 0.05, respectively) in hypertensive subjects, on total cholesterol (-19.5 ± 33.5 mg/dl, p < 0.05) in hypercholesterolemic subjects, and on waist circumference (-1.0 ± 4.7 cm, p < 0.05) and waist-hip index (0.01 ± 0.04, p < 0.05) in subjects with central obesity. CONCLUSION: Under real practical circumstances, the prescription of unsupervised walking was effective in improving physical fitness in general sample and in reducing the specific cardiovascular risk in subjects who have altered cardiovascular risk factors.

Epidemiological data from oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is mostly derived from North American, European and East Asian populations. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to report the demographic and clinicopathological features from OSCC diagnosed in an Oral Pathology service in southeastern Brazil in an 8-year period. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All OSCC diagnosed from 2005 to 2012 were reviewed, including histological analysis of all hematoxylin and eosin stained slides and review of all demographic and clinical information from the laboratory records. RESULTS: A total of 346 OSCC was retrieved and males represented 67% of the sample. Mean age of the patients was 62.3 years-old and females were affected a decade older than males (p<0.001). Mean time of complaint with the tumors was 10 months and site distribution showed that the border of the tongue (37%), alveolar mucosa/gingiva (20%) and floor of mouth/ventral tongue (19%) were the most common affected sites. Mean size of the tumors was 3.4 cm, with no differences for males and females (p=0.091) and males reported both tobacco and alcohol consumption more frequently than females. Histological grade of the tumors revealed that 27%, 40% and 21% of the tumors were, respectively, classified as well-, moderately- and poorly-differentiated OSCC, 26 cases (7.5%) were microinvasive OSCC and 17 cases were OSCC variants. OSCC in males mostly affected the border of tongue, floor of mouth/ventral tongue and alveolar mucosa/gingival, while they were more frequent on the border of tongue, alveolar mucosa/gingival and buccal mucosa/buccal sulcus in females (p=0.004). CONCLUSIONS: The present data reflect the epidemiological characteristics of OSCC diagnosed in a public Oral Pathology laboratory in southeastern Brazil and have highlighted several differences in clinicopathological features when comparing male and female OSCC-affected patients.

Os estudos em famílias nucleares possibilitam a avaliação da existência de agregação familiar numa dada característica, permitindo avaliar o quanto da variação dessa característica na população pode ser atribuída à variação genética existente entre os sujeitos. Os resultados desses estudos possibilitam a elaboração de estratégias de intervenção mais eficientes e direcionadas, além de serem o ponto de partida para estudos mais complexos de epidemiologia genética, como a identificação de genes responsáveis pela característica em análise. Nas áreas de Ciências do Desporto e Educação Física, alguns estudos têm sido realizados para verificar a existência de agregação familiar e a influência genética em traços relacionados a estados de saúde, atividade e desempenho físicos. Entretanto, esses esforços revelam-se escassos em populações lusófonas e são, praticamente inexistentes, na população brasileira. Dessa forma, o presente artigo teve como propósito abordar, de forma simples e introdutória, aspectos importantes de estudos em famílias nucleares. Para tanto, foram analisadas as duas fases iniciais dos estudos de Epidemiologia Genética, ou seja, a identificação e quantificação da agregação familiar e da heritabilidade. As diferentes etapas de análise foram exemplificadas com dados reais, coletados em famílias nucleares pertencentes a um estudo realizado na cidade de Muzambinho-MG. Espera-se que esse artigo forneça subsídios e estímulo aos pesquisadores iniciantes neste tipo de investigação.

Studies with nuclear families allow the identification of familiar aggregation, as well as the estimation of how much of the variability in a characteristic might be attributed to genetic differences among subjects. Results from these studies are starting points for more complex genetic research, including the identification and relevance of candidate genes. In Sport Science, studies have analyzed the possible existence of familiar aggregation and genetic influence on phenotypes marking physical activity, fitness, and health status. However, few studies were conducted with Portuguese speaking populations, and even fewer with Brazilian populations. Therefore, the present paper aims to discuss, at an introductory level, important aspects about nuclear family studies. The first two phases of Genetic Epidemiology research outline - familiar aggregation and heritability - were approached. The different steps of analysis were exemplified with real data collected in nuclear families from a study conducted in Muzambinho-MG. We hope this paper provides enough background and stimuli for the newcomers in this area of study.

INTRODUÇÃO E OBJETIVO: A doença cardiovascular inicia na infância e está atrelada à presença de fatores de risco cardiovascular (FRC). A prevalência desses fatores varia em diferentes populações brasileiras, tendo sido estudada principalmente em cidades de médio e grande porte. Este estudo avaliou a prevalência dos FRC e da prática de atividade física (AF) em crianças e adolescentes de Muzambinho, uma cidade de pequeno porte. MÉTODO: Foram avaliados 205 sujeitos (entre sete e 18 anos - 108 do gênero masculino). Foram medidos: peso, estatura, glicemia, colesterolemia, pressão arterial (PA) e prática de AF. As comparações foram realizadas pelo teste do Qui-quadrado. RESULTADOS: A prevalência de sobrepeso foi de 19% e de valores alterados de PA, glicemia e colesterolemia foram de, respectivamente, 11, 5 e 15%. Não houve diferença na prevalência dos FRC entre os sexos. O tabagismo, o alcoolismo, a PA alterada e a insuficiência de AF aumentaram com a idade. Setenta e nove por cento dos sujeitos praticavam AF de locomoção, 10% ocupacional, 97% nas aulas de educação física, 72% no recreio e 90% de lazer. Noventa e dois por cento foram considerados ativos. A prática de AF ocupacional foi maior nas meninas e aumentou nos meninos com a idade. A prevalência de AF de lazer e recreio diminuiu com a idade nos dois sexos. CONCLUSÃO: A prevalência de FRC, exceto do sedentarismo, foi expressiva, não diferiu entre os sexos e aumentou com a idade. A prática de AF de todos os tipos foi alta, diferenciou-se entre os sexos e diminuiu com a idade.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular disease begins at infancy and it has been linked to the presence of cardiovascular risk factors (CRF). Prevalence of these factors varies a lot among different Brazilian populations and has been mostly studied in big and medium size cities. Thus, this study assessed the prevalence of CRF and physical activity (PA) in children and adolescents from Muzambinho, a small city in the state of Minas Gerais. METHODS: 205 subjects (7 to 18 years - 108 males) were studied. Body weight and height, glycemia, cholesterolemia, blood pressure (BP), and PA were measured. Comparisons were made by Qui-square test. RESULTS: Obesity and altered values of BP, glycemia, and cholesterolemia were found, respectively, in 19, 11, 5 and 15% of the subjects. There was no difference between genders, while the prevalence of smokers, drinkers, altered BP, and inactivity increased with age. Seventy-nine percent of the subjects practiced community PA; 10% occupational PA; 97% physical education classes; 72% PA during school recess; and 90% leisure time PA. Ninety-two percent of them were active. Occupational PA was higher in girls, and increased with age in boys. Leisure time and during school recess PA decreased with age in both genders. CONCLUSION: Except for physical inactivity, prevalence of CRF was high, did not differ between genders, and increased with age. High levels of all kinds of PA were found; they differed between genders, and decreased with age.

INTRODUÇÃO: Devido à difusão dos benefícios da atividade física, muitas pessoas passaram a se exercitar em parques públicos, o que incentivou o surgimento de projetos que orientam a prática nestes locais. Estes projetos precisam avaliar a aptidão física de seus clientes com testes fáceis, cujos resultados são comparados a padrões de estadiamento. Porém, os padrões existentes não se adequam à população em questão. OBJETIVO: Construir tabelas de estadiamento para a avaliação da aptidão física de adultos e idosos. MÉTODOS: Foram utilizados os dados de 713 avaliações feitas em indivíduos de ambos os sexos e com mais de 20 anos. Foram avaliadas a aptidão cardiorrespiratória (marcha estacionária e Cooper), a capacidade muscular (flexão de cotovelo, impulsão vertical e resistência abdominal) e a flexibilidade (sentar e alcançar e flexibilidade de ombros). RESULTADOS: Foi avaliado o percentil 50 de cada teste: marcha estacionária = 105 passadas; Cooper = 1.200m; flexão de cotovelo = 20 rep; resistência abdominal = 18 rep; força de membros inferiores: 18cm; flexibilidade de ombros = 1cm e flexibilidade lombar = 23cm. Estes resultados foram maiores que os verificados nas tabelas originais, o que confirmou a necessidade da criação das tabelas específicas. CONCLUSÃO: Foram construídas sete tabelas separadas por gênero e faixa etária e com o desempenho classificado em: fraco - < que percentil 20; regular - entre 20 e 40; médio - entre 40 e 60; bom - entre 60 e 80; e ótimo - > que o percentil 80.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the spread of the health benefits of physical activity, many subjects began to exercise in public parks. This behavior promoted the creation of projects which stimulate and guide on physical activity practice. Nevertheless, for being considered effective, these projects need to evaluate the subjects' physical aptitude by applying easy tests, whose results are compared to classification tables. However, these tables are not adequate to the target population. OBJECTIVE: To design fitness classification tables based on simple fitness tests applied to adults and elderly subjects. METHODS: Data from 713 evaluations conducted with subjects of both genders older than 20 years were analyzed. Cardiorespiratory fitness (stationary gait and Cooper tests), muscle fitness (elbow flexion, vertical jump and abdominal resistance), and flexibility (sit and reach and shoulder flexibility) were evaluated. RESULTS: The 50 percentile for the tests were stationary gait = 105 steps; Cooper = 1200m; elbow flexion = 20 repetitions; abdominal resistance = 18 repetitions; legs strength =18 cm; shoulder flexibility = 1 cm; and lumbar flexibility = 23 cm. These results were higher than the original ones described for each test, which confirmed the need for specific classifications tables. CONCLUSION: Seven tables were designed with the results separated by gender and age group (20 to 80 year-olds divided in 10-year stages). Results were classified as: weak = < than 20 percentile; average= from 20 to 40 percentile; medium = from 40 to 60 percentile; good = from 60 to 80 percentile; and excellent = > than 80 percentile.

Foram analisadas as relações das estratégias de enfrentamento, apoio social e variáveis sócio-demográficas com o bem-estar subjetivo de uma amostra de idosos. O bem-estar foi definido pela satisfação com a vida, os afetos positivos e afetos negativos. Participaram 123 idosos (média = 67,1; desvio padrão = 6,1), residentes em João Pessoa, Brasil. Análises de regressão hierárquica revelaram que (a) a satisfação com a vida é maior em mulheres, nas pessoas que recebem pensão, as pessoas que estão satisfeitas com o apoio recebido, as pessoas que dão apoio aos outros e nas pessoas que enfrentam os problemas de forma direta e uma re-avaliação positiva; (b) os afetos positivos aumentam com a satisfação do apoio recebido e com o enfrentamento direto e re-avaliativo e a diminuição do enfrentamento de esquiva e (c) os afetos negativos diminuem ao dar apoio e aumentam com o enfrentamento de esquiva. Os resultados mostram as diferenças dos componentes cognitivo e afetivo do bem-estar e apontam a necessidade de investigar a autonomia funcional do idoso.

Subjective well-being was studied in a sample of the elderly by analyzing the relationship among coping strategies, social support, and social-demographic variables. Well-being was defined by life satisfaction and positive and negative affect. There were 123 elderly participants (mean=67.1; standard deviation=6.1) who were residents in João Pessoa, Brazil. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that (a) life satisfaction is higher in: women, people who receive pensions, people who are satisfied with the support they receive, people who give support to others, and people who cope with problems directly and by re-appraising the situation in a positive way; (b) positive affect increases with the satisfaction of the support received, with direct and re-appraisal coping, and with the decrease of coping by avoidance, and (c) negative affect decreases with giving support and increases with coping by avoidance. The results show the differences of the cognitive and affective components of well-being and identify the need to investigate the functional autonomy of the elderly.

OBJECTIVE: Physical exercise helps to prevent cardiovascular disorders. Campaigns promoting exercise have taken many people to the parks of our city. The most appropriate exercise for preventing cardiovascular disorders is the aerobic modality; inappropriate exercise acutely increases cardiovascular risk, especially in individuals at higher risk. Therefore, assessing the cardiovascular risk of these individuals and their physical activities is of practical value. METHODS: In the Parque Fernando Costa, we carried out the project "Exercício e Coração" (Exercise and Heart) involving 226 individuals. Assessment of the cardiovascular risk and of the physical activity practiced by the individuals exercising at that park was performed with a questionnaire and measurement of the following parameters: blood pressure, weight, height, and waist/hip ratio. The individuals were lectured on the benefits provided by exercise and how to correctly exercise. Each participant received a customized exercise prescription. RESULTS: In regard to risk, 43% of the individuals had health problems and 7% of the healthy individuals had symptoms that could be attributed to heart disorders. High blood pressure was observed in a large amount of the population. In regard to the adequacy of the physical activity, the individuals exercised properly. The project was well accepted, because the participants not only appreciated the initiative, but also reported altering their exercise habits after taking part in the project. CONCLUSION: Data obtained in the current study point to the need to be more careful in assessing the health of individuals who exercise at parks, suggesting that city parks should have a sector designated for assessing and guiding physical activity.
