Abstract In this work is presented a hybrid bioinspired optimization technique that associates a General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) with the Multiobjective Bat Algorithm (MOBA), for the design and synthesis of the Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS), aiming its application in data communication systems by diffusion of millimeter waves, specifically, in the IEEE 802.15.3c standard. The designed device consists of planar arrangements of metallizations (patches), diamond-shaped, arranged over a RO4003 substrate. The FSS proposed in this study presents an operation with ultra-wide band characteristics, its patch designed to cover the range of 40.0 GHz at 70.0 GHz, i.e., 30.0 GHz bandwidth and 60.0 GHz resonance. The upper and lower cutoff frequencies, referring to the transmission coefficient's scattering matrix (dB), were obtained at the cutoff threshold at −10dB, to control the bandwidth of the device.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Esses resultados demonstram o potencial uso desse óleo no controle deste vetor.
Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil. The objective was to evaluate the effect of oil from (Azadirachta indica) neem seeds on eggs, larvae and adults of the vector. The insects were captured in the field and kept in the laboratory at ± 27 °C and 80% relative humidity. Five treatments with different concentrations were performed using two negative controls (distilled water and Tween 80) and a positive control. The eggs were sprayed with the oil at different concentrations and the number of hatched larvae evaluated for 10 days. Mortality of larvae was observed to pupation and adult mortality was observed after 24, 48, and 72 hours. Statistical analysis was performed by Tukey test at 5% probability. The highest oil concentration of eggs obtained 65.16 ± 3.24% efficacy for reducing egg hatching. The test with larvae showed 67.75 ± 2.21% efficacy at a concentration of 100 mg.mL-1. In adults, the efficacy of the 100 mg.mL-1 concentration was 96.64 ± 4.11% after 24 hours. The phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of triterpenes. These results demonstrate the potential use of this oil in the control of this vector.

The selective ion monitoring acquisition mode in mass spectrometry was applied to identify, in the diesel complex matrix, the raw materials (vegetable oil and alcohol) that originate biodiesel. Biodiesel samples obtained from babassu, castor, palm and soybean vegetable oils and pure fatty acid methyl and ethyl esters were used to develop this method, using specific fragments in mass spectrometry and the "window system" in gas chromatography. The commercial Brazilian B2 samples were found to be produced with soybean oil, transesterified with methanol.

The influence of leaf maturity at harvest was evaluated to obtain the postharvest quality and deterioration of tannia (Xanthosoma sagittifolium) leaves. Leaves were harvested 5; 8, and 15 days after unfolding and stored in the dark until yellowing. At harvest, the leaves showed similar width and length. Older leaves exhibited lower calcium oxalate content. Soluble sugars and starch were significantly decreased with the leaf age at harvest. Throughout postharvest ageing soluble sugars and chlorophyll contents showed trends of continued degradation in the leaves harvested in the three stages. Deterioration was evident at 96 hours in the leaves harvested 5 and 8 days after unfolding, and 72 hours in the leaves harvested 15 days after unfolding. The rate of fresh matter loss was higher in leaves harvested 5 and 8 days than those harvested 15 days after unfolding.

Foram estudadas as seguintes espécies: Oryza sativa, Phaseolus vulgaris, Glycine max, Helianthus annuus, Gossypium hirsutum, Manihot esculenta, Theobroma cacao, Coffea arabica, Hevea brasiliensis, e Eucalyptus urophylla × E. grandis, todas do grupo C3, e Amaranthus sp., Panicum maximum, Pennisetum purpureum, Zea mays e Saccharum officinarum, do grupo C4.
The actual (A) and potential (Apot) photosynthetic rates of C3 and C4 tropical crop species grown under greenhouse conditions was compared. The following species were investigated: Oryza sativa, Phaseolus vulgaris, Glycine max, Helianthus annuus, Gossypium hirsutum, Manihot esculenta, Theobroma cacao, Coffea arabica, Hevea brasiliensis, and Eucalyptus urophylla × E. grandis, all from the C3 group, and Amaranthus sp., Panicum maximum, Pennisetum purpureum, Zea mays and Saccharum officinarum, from the C4 group. A, determined under non-limiting light at ambient temperature and CO2, was measured with an infrared gas analyser, whilst Apot, determined under saturating light and CO2 at an optimal temperature (35 ºC for all species), was gauged with a gas-phase oxygen electrode. On an area basis, A varied from 5.0 up to 26.3 mumol CO2 m-2 s-1, whilst Apot was very similar in 14 of the 15 species, with an average rate of 35.0 ± 2.4 mumol O2 m-2 s-1. The value of Apot in T. cacao was approximately half the mean of the remaining species. On a mass basis, variations in A were much larger, and differences in Apot, although not large, emerged. The overall mean Apot per unit mass in the four tree species was 28.0 ± 2.2 mumol O2 g-1 min-1 against 44.6 ± 5.8 mumol O2 g-1 min-1 in the remaining species. As a whole, the results evidenced a conservative behaviour of the photosynthetic apparatus to fix CO2 amongst the species investigated, despite the large differences in A among them.

To accomplish systematic studies with coffee leafminer, it is necessary to establish a mass rearing system under artificial conditions. It is possible to rear this species, from egg to adult, under laboratory conditions, without using coffee seedlings but detached leaves maintained in vitro. Synthetic cytokinins are routinely used for maintenance of plant cell and plant tissues in vitro. Two plant growth regulators, benzyladenin and kinetin, in concentrations 10-6 and 10-7 M were used to mantain the leaves. Green leaves collected in the field were maintained in the solution to be tested. Distilled water served as control. The experiment lasted 30 days, a period longer than the necessary for the complete development of the insect. Both artificial cytokinines indeed increased the lifetime of the coffee leaves, maintaining them green and healthy. Leaves placed in the cages for oviposition were attractive to the insect, with significant number of eggs per leaf. In most cases, eggs resulted in individuals that completed the whole developmental cycle. Tests with regulator in different concentrations with healthy leaves showed efficiency. However, we believe that hormone concentrations to be used with mined leaves should be larger, because these when maintained at 10-7 M leaves did not present a satisfactory lifetime. Therefore, tests with mined leaves with different hormone concentrations should be made to find out the ideal concentration for leaf survival. In our laboratory we are successfully using 10-6 M benzyladenin for the maintenance of mined leaves.
