RESUMEN Lasia pulla no se ha registrado desde su descripción en 1865 por Philippi. En este trabajo se proporcionan nuevos registros de especímenes y una descripción taxonómica actualizada. Esta especie de mosca colibrí es endémica de la Región de Los Ríos, Chile. En esta zona, muchos ecosistemas aún no han sido explorados, pero las actividades antrópicas actualmente están fragmentando los bosques siempre verdes. Se sugiere una evaluación de la Lista Roja de la UICN.

ABSTRACT Lasia pulla has not recorded since their description in 1865 by Philippi. New specimen records and an updated taxonomical description is provided here. This hummingbird fly species is endemic from the Los Ríos Region, Chile. In this area, many ecosystems are still unexplored, but anthropic activities are currently fragmenting the evergreen forests. A IUCN Red List assessment is suggested.

Abstract Arrested pneumatization of the paranasal sinuses is an under-recognized benign condition, which consists of a variation of the normal pneumatization, with fatty bone marrow remaining within the cavity, more frequent in the sphenoid sinus. It is generally asymptomatic, and its diagnosis is usually incidental in the context of imaging for other causes, with defined imaging criteria for this condition. Its management is expectant and its distinction from other differential diagnoses is essential, in order to avoid invasive procedures and treatments that only contribute morbidity. We present two cases of 15- and 16-year-old patients who, on imaging for another reason, show heterogeneous sphenoid lesions with low-signal foci suggestive of calcifications, with characteristics compatible with arrested pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus.

Resumen La neumatización detenida de los senos paranasales es una condición benigna poco conocida, que consiste en una variación de la neumatización normal, permaneciendo médula ósea grasa dentro de la cavidad, siendo más frecuente en el seno esfenoidal. Es generalmente asintomática y su diagnóstico suele ser incidental en el contexto de la realización de imágenes por otras causas, existiendo criterios imagenológicos definidos para esta condición. Su manejo es expectante y es esencial su distinción de otros diagnósticos diferenciales, con objeto de evitar procedimientos y tratamientos invasivos que solo aporten morbilidad. Presentamos dos casos de pacientes, de 15 y 16 años que, en estudio imagenológico por otra causa, se observan lesiones esfenoidales heterogéneas con focos de baja señal sugerentes de calcificaciones, con características compatibles con neumatización detenida del seno esfenoidal.

Abstract The biology and ecology of wedge-shaped beetles (Coleoptera: Ripiphoridae) are scarcely known in the Neotropical realm. Chilean species of this beetle family are currently represented by two genera: MacrosiagonHentz, 1830 and RipiphorusBosc, 1791, and three species, only known from their type localities. Here, we present an updated catalog of Chilean Ripiphoridae, along with the new distributional and biology records. Also, Macrosiagon flavipennisLeConte, 1866 (Ripiphorinae: Macrosiagonini) has been reported for the first time in Chile. We discuss the reasons for the presence of M. flavipennis in urban areas, the state of knowledge of the endemic species presents in Chile in relation to their distribution and the opportunity to use opportunistic records to better understand their natural history.

ABSTRACT Browningia candelaris is a cactus from the Atacama Desert with bat pollination syndrome (i.e., chiropterophilia). In Peru, the bat Platalina genovensium appears to be its main pollinator. However, in Chile, this bat only inhabits the Azapa Valley, being the pollinators and the reproductive system of B. candelaris unknown in the south of its distribution (e.g., Tarapacá). Through manual pollination trials, in 2017 and 2019, we evaluated the ability of B. candelaris to produce fruits and seeds with its own pollen, but without pollinators (i.e., autogamy), with its own pollen and pollinators (i.e., geitonogamy), and with exogenous pollen and pollinators (i.e., xenogamy). In addition, we evaluated natural pollination and the identity of pollinators. The autogamy flowers did not bear fruits, indicating that B. candelaris is unable to produce seeds in the absence of pollinators. Through geitonogamy there was only 20% fruiting, although only in one year, indicating a low capacity for self-pollination mediated by pollinators. About 75% of the flowers fructified by xenogamy indicating that cross pollination is the main reproductive mechanism. However, the xenogamy fruiting was 10% higher than the natural one, and the number of seeds per fruit 34.3% higher, which indicates a low effectiveness of the pollinators. The potential pollinators are the northern hummingbird (Rhodopis vesper vesper) and seven species of insects (3 Diptera, 3 Hymenoptera, 1 Lepidopteran). Additional studies on the pollination and reproduction of threatened desert plants seem to be mandatory to propose appropriate conservation strategies.

RESUMEN Browningia candelaris es un cactus del desierto de Atacama con síndrome de polinización por murciélagos. En Perú, el murciélago Platalina genovensium parece ser su principal polinizador. Sin embargo, en Chile, este murciélago sólo habita en el Valle de Azapa, desconociéndose los polinizadores y el sistema reproductivo de B. candelaris en el sur de su distribución (e.g., Tarapacá). Mediante ensayos de polinización manual, en 2017 y 2019, evaluamos la capacidad de B. candelaris para producir frutos y semillas con polen propio, pero sin polinizadores (i.e., autogamia), con polen propio y polinizadores (i.e., geitonogamia), y con polen exógeno y polinizadores (i.e., xenogamia). Además, evaluamos la polinización natural y la identidad de los polinizadores. Las flores de autogamia no fructificaron, indicando que B. candelaris no es capaz de producir semillas en ausencia de polinizadores. Mediante geitonogamia hubo sólo un 20% de fructificación, aunque sólo en un año, indicando una baja capacidad de autopolinización mediada por polinizadores. Cerca del 75% de las flores fructificaron por xenogamia indicando que la polinización cruzada es el principal mecanismo reproductivo. Sin embargo, la fructificación por xenogamia fue un 10% mayor que la natural, y el número de semillas por fruto un 34,3% mayor, lo que indica limitación por polen y baja efectividad de los polinizadores. Los potenciales polinizadores de B. candelaris son el colibrí del norte (Rhodopis vesper vesper) y siete especies de insectos (3 dípteros, 3 himenópteros, 1 lepidóptero). Estudios adicionales sobre la polinización y reproducción de plantas amenazadas del Desierto de Atacama parecen ser mandatarios para plantear estrategias de conservación adecuadas.

ABSTRACT The syrphid genus Meromacrus is widespread in the Neotropics, but its presence in Chile has been confirmed just recently. Adults pollinate, and larvae are saprophagous of vegetal materials. In this note, we report Meromacrus cactorum Ricarte et al. for the first time from Chile. New data on adult habitats and flower visitation are also provided for this Meromacrus. Adults were observed on flowers of the cacti Opuntia ficus-indica, Cumulopuntia sphaerica, and the vulnerable Browningia candelaris. Species distribution and pollinator potential are discussed for M. cactorum.

RESUMEN El género Meromacrus (Diptera: Syrphidae) está ampliamente distribuido en la región Neotropical, pero su presencia en Chile ha sido confirmada recientemente. Los adultos polinizan, mientras que las larvas descomponen materia orgánica asociada a plantas. En esta nota reportamos por primera vez en Chile a Meromacrus cactorum Ricarte et al. Se proporcionan nuevos datos sobre el hábitat y las flores visitadas por los adultos de M. cactorum. Los adultos fueron observados sobre flores de los cactus Opuntia ficus-indica, Cumulopuntia sphaerica, y la especie vulnerable Browningia candelaris. Se discute la distribución de M. cactorum, así como su potencial polinizador.

Abstract Introduction: Maxillary sinus disease is frequent in otorhinolaryngology clinical practice. The pre-lacrimal approach allows a wide access to the maxillary sinus, preserving the inferior turbinate and the nasolacrimal duct. Aim: To describe and analyze the characte- ristics of patients undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) with pre-lacrimal approach to the maxillary sinus at University of Chile Clinical Hospital. Material and Method: Retrospective, descriptive study of all patients who underwent ESS for the treatment of any otorhinolaryngological pathology with pre-lacrimal approach, between 2015 and 2019. Variables analyzed include demographics, signs and symptoms and surgical complications. Results: This series includes 11 patients, with a mean age of 46.8 years at the time of sur- gery; 6 men and 5 women. The main diagnoses included inverted papilloma and recurrent antrochoanal polyp. All the patients were studied with nasal endoscopy and images, with computed tomography being the modality of choice. No major complications were observed at follow-up. Conclusion: The pre-lacrimal approach to the maxillary sinus is an alterna- tive to access this cavity, especially in well-selected patients. In our experience, the compli- cation rate is low. We report no recurrences so far.

Resumen Introducción: La patología del seno maxilar es frecuente en la práctica del otorrinolaringólogo. El abordaje prelagrimal permite un amplio acceso al seno maxilar, preservando el cornete inferior y ducto nasolagrimal. Objetivo: describir y analizar las características de los pacientes sometidos a abordaje prelagrimal del seno maxilar, en el Servicio de Otorrinolaringología del Hospital Clínico de la Universidad de Chile (HCUCh). Material y Método: Estudio retrospectivo, descriptivo, incluyendo los pacientes con patología otorrinolaringológica sometidos a abordaje prelagrimal del seno maxilar, entre los años 2015 y 2019 en HCUCh. Se analizaron variables epidemiológicas, clínicas, resultados y complicaciones. Resultados: La serie está constituida por 11 pacientes, con edad promedio de 46,8 años; 6 hombres y 5 mujeres. Los diagnósticos más frecuentes que motivaron esta intervención fueron papiloma invertido y pólipo antrocoanal recidivado. Todos los pacientes fueron estudiados con endoscopía nasal e imágenes, siendo de elección la tomografía computada. No se reportaron complicaciones postoperatorias mayores. En el período de seguimiento, ningún paciente ha requerido reintervención del seno maxilar. Conclusión: El abordaje prelagrimal del seno maxilar es una alternativa para abordar esta cavidad, en pacientes adecuadamente seleccionados. En nuestra experiencia, la tasa de complicaciones es baja y no hemos presentado casos de recidiva.

Abstract Thick-headed flies (Conopidae) are a family of Diptera with species that are endoparasitoids of bees and aculeate wasps. Physoconops is represented by 64 species in the Neotropical and Andean regions and distributed in many countries. Only 3 species have been described for Chile, specifically from the northern area. In this work, a new species from the Valdivian evergreen forest, Physoconops tentenvilu n. sp., is described and a new key for the Chilean species is provided. In addition, P. tentevilu represents the southernmost record of this genus in Chile. Morphological aspects are discussed, as well as hosts and distribution gaps for the Chilean Physoconops species.

Resumen Las moscas de cabeza ancha (Conopidae) son una familia de Diptera cuyas especies son parasitoides de abejas y avispas. Physoconops se encuentra representado por 64 especies en las regiones Neotropical y Andina, distribuidas en varios países. Solo 3 especies han sido registradas para Chile, especialmente para la zona norte del país. En este trabajo, se describe una especie nueva del bosque valdiviano siempreverde, Physoconops tentenvilu n. sp., y se presenta una nueva clave taxonómica para los representantes chilenos de este género. Además, P. tentenvilu representa el registro más austral conocido para este género en Chile. Se discuten aspectos morfológicos, así como los huéspedes y vacíos distribucionales para las especies chilenas de Physoconops.

Abstract: The effect of the addition of an extract rich in phenols, from rice husks, on the microstructural and optical properties of biodegradable films based on thermoplastic starch and poly (ε-caprolactone) has been studied. For the rice husk extract, the amount of soluble solid, the content of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity were determined. In the case of films, their morphology was studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy and their internal transmittance, colour and brightness were determined. The results show statistically significant differences (p <0.05) for the transmittance, colour and brightness of the material. Regarding its morphology, the addition of phenols generated less rough, and more homogeneous and compact films. Based on the results of the work, it is concluded that the addition of extract significantly affects the structure of the material by modifying its optical properties.

Resumen: Se ha estudiado el efecto de la adición de un extracto acuoso rico en fenoles, provenientes de cascarilla de arroz, sobre las propiedades microestructurales y ópticas de películas biodegradables a base de almidón termoplástico y poli (ε-caprolactona). Para el extracto de cascarilla de arroz se determinó la cantidad de sólidos solubles, el contenido de compuestos fenólicos y la actividad antioxidante. En el caso de las películas, se estudió su morfología mediante Microscopía Electrónica de Barrido y se determinó la transmitancia interna, color y brillo. Los resultados muestran diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p<0.05) para la transmitancia, color y brillo del material. En cuanto a su morfología, la adición de fenoles generó películas menos rugosas, más homogéneas y compactas. Basado en los resultados del trabajo, se concluye que la adición del extracto afecta significativamente la estructura del material modificando sus propiedades ópticas.

Resumo O aumento nos níveis de ansiedade e estresse tem sido relacionado na maioria das vezes a efeitos negativos no desempenho de atletas, de modo que o uso de habilidades psicológicas como a autodiálogo tem sido utilizado para gerenciar a ansiedade e o estresse para obter melhor desempenho esportivo. Este artigo apresenta uma revisão sistemática focada em intervenções que utilizaram o autodiálogo como método de treinamento mental para controle 2 níveis de ansiedade e estresse em tenistas. Foram encontrados apenas três estudos que investigaram o método de autodiálogo em variáveis psicológicas e apenas um estudo que avaliou o efeito sobre a ansiedade. Por essa razão, sugere-se mais pesquisas que abordem as variáveis mencionadas.

Abstract The increase in levels of anxiety and stress have been related most of the time to negative effects on the performance of athletes, so the use of psychological skills such as self-talk has been used to manage anxiety and stress to obtain better sports performance. This article presents a systematic review focused on interventions that used self-talk as a method of mental training to control levels of anxiety and stress in tennis players. We found only 3 studies that investigated the method of self-talk in psychological variables and only one study that evaluate the effect on anxiety. For that reason, more research is suggested to addresses these variables.

Resumen El incremento en los niveles de ansiedad y estrés se han relacionado la mayoría de las veces con efectos negativos para el desempeño de atletas, por lo que la utilización de habilidades psicológicas como el autodiálogo se han usado para manejar la ansiedad y el estrés para obtener un mejor rendimiento deportivo. Este artículo presenta una revisión sistemática centrada en intervenciones que utilizaron el autodiálogo como método de entrenamiento mental para controlar niveles de ansiedad y estrés en jugadores de tenis. Se encontraron solamente 3 estudios que investigaron el método de autodiálogo en variables psicológicas y apenas un estudio que evaluó el efecto sobre la ansiedad. Por esta razón, se sugieren más investigaciones que aborden las variables mencionadas.

ABSTRACT The global pollination crisis is not only produced by loss of pollinators but also by their homogenization, both processes caused by humans. This crisis impacts the persistence of many native plants species worldwide. In this document we analyze the ecological impacts that warrant the prohibition of new income of commercial bumblebee, Bombus terrestris to Chile. This species is highly invasive, it has been banned in other countries, but in Chile its entry is allowed since 1997. Thousands of colonies and fertilized queens entered the country every year and expand throughout the rest of South America. We give eleven reasons to stop B. terrestris entry to Chile and start controlling it. We justify these reasons based on work done both in the country and outside of it. At the same time, through the conclusions, we mentioned what should be the steps to followed regarding the prohibition B. terrestris entry to Chile.

RESUMEN La crisis mundial de polinización no solo es producida por la pérdida de polinizadores, sino también por su homogeneización, ambos procesos causados por el ser humano. En este documento analizamos los impactos ecológicos que justifican la prohibición de nuevos ingresos del abejorro comercial Bombus terrestris a Chile. Esta especie es altamente invasiva y ha sido prohibida en otros países, pero en Chile se permite su ingreso desde 1997. Miles de colonias y reinas fertilizadas ingresan al país cada año y se expanden por el resto de Sudamérica. En este artículo entregamos once razones para detener los ingresos de B. terrestris a Chile y comenzar a controlarlo. Justificamos estas razones en base al trabajo realizado tanto en el país como fuera de él. Al mismo tiempo, a través de las conclusiones, mencionamos cuáles deberían ser los pasos a seguir respecto a la prohibición de ingreso de B. terrestris a Chile.

ABSTRACT Myopa metallica Camras1992 is a parasitic fly, endemic to Chile, whose distribution was unknown. In this study, four new localities are reported between the Atacama and Metropolitan regions using citizen science. Our work breaks down the methodological barriers, providing a distribution for a rare and conspicuous thick-headed fly.

RESÚMEN Myopa metallica Camras, 1992 es una mosca parásita, endémica de Chile, cuya distribución era desconocida. En este estudio se reportan cuatro nuevas localidades entre la región de Atacama y Metropolitana usando ciencia ciudadana. Nuestro trabajo rompe las barreras metodológicas, proporcionando una distriución para una especie de mosca conspicua y rara.

This article explores the violence reduction potential in the intersection between health, criminal justice, and development. It emphasizes public health, rule of law, and equality-driven socioeconomic development as principal concerns in preventing violence. In parts of Latin America, violence has become a serious public health and security problem. Prior studies have explored the risk factors associated with violence as well as experiences in its prevention. These studies and existing approaches to violence prevention provide evidence on where to direct attention and build prevention efforts. This article argues for integrated community-driven and national interventions to create cooperative national- local linkages and embed international human rights law at the national and local levels. Nations struggling with violence should be encouraged to apply an integrated framework to prevent violence and reinforce human security.

En este artículo se analiza la posibilidad de disminuir la violencia en la intersección entre la salud, la justicia penal y el desarrollo. Se hace hincapié en la salud pública, el imperio de la ley y el desarrollo socioeconómico regido por la igualdad, como inquietudes principales en la prevención de la violencia. En algunas partes de América Latina, la violencia se ha convertido en un problema grave de salud pública y de seguridad. En estudios anteriores se han analizado los factores de riesgo vinculados a la violencia, así como las experiencias en su prevención. Estos estudios y los métodos existentes de prevención de la violencia aportan datos probatorios acerca de dónde debe dirigirse la atención y dónde deben emprenderse iniciativas de prevención. Este artículo aboga por intervenciones comunitarias y nacionales integradas, a fin de crear vínculos de colaboración nacional y local, e instituir la legislación internacional de derechos humanos en los ámbitos nacional y local. Se debe alentar a los países que luchan contra la violencia a que adopten un marco integrado con miras a prevenir la violencia y reforzar la seguridad humana.

Insects are virtually ignored in ecological studies of littoral marine environments in Chile. Although they are known to feed on decaying organic matter, recent data suggest a more active role in community processes, but the available information is extremely scarce. With the aim to determine insect taxa occurring at the littoral zone of Concepción, Chile (ca. 36°40' S), and their potential ecological importance in that system, we conducted an exploratory study in four localities: Caleta Tumbes, Cocholgüe, mouth (saline) of the Bío-Bío river, and Punta de Parra. At each locality, we assessed the diversity of insects in the high, mid and low intertidal zones, recording the habitat or type of substratum to which they were associated. We found 24 insect species, both native and introduced, distributed in four orders and 18 families, including midges, rover beetles, and crane flies. Some of the species were considered casual records. Diversity was higher in the mid intertidal zone, particularly in the rocky intertidal fringe where macroalgae are more abundant. We also detected recurrent associations between insects and the most common intertidal algal species (in situ or washed ashore, live or decaying), apparently used as habitat or food, suggesting a key role in the recycling and exchange of nutrients between intertidal and subtidal systems. Some terrestrial predatory insects seemed to forage consistently on patches of insects associated to decaying algae, generating lateral interaction chains with the intertidal system. We discuss the community membership of insects and the research perspectives arising from this study

Los insectos son un grupo virtualmente ignorado en los estudios ecológicos de ambientes marinos litorales en Chile. Aunque se reconocen como degradadores de restos orgánicos, otros datos sugieren una participación más activa en procesos comunitarios, pero la información disponible es escasa. Con objeto de determinar los taxa de insectos presentes en el litoral de Concepción, sur de Chile (ca. 36°40' S), y su importancia ecológica potencial en el sistema, realizamos un estudio exploratorio en cuatro localidades: Caleta Tumbes, Cocholgüe, área norte de la desembocadura del río Bío-Bío y Punta de Parra. En cada localidad evaluamos la diversidad de insectos en la zona intermareal baja, media y alta, registrando el hábitat o tipo de substrato al que se encontraban asociados. Detectamos 24 taxa de insectos distribuidos en cuatro órdenes y 18 familias, incluyendo especies nativas e introducidas, parte de ellas ocasionales o casuales. La diversidad fue mayor en la zona intermareal media, particularmente en el intermareal rocoso donde hay mayor abundancia de algas. Además detectamos asociaciones recurrentes entre insectos y las especies de algas intermareales más comunes (in situ o varadas, vivas o en descomposición), usadas aparentemente como alimento o hábitat, sugiriendo un papel fundamental en el reciclamiento e intercambio de nutrientes entre el intermareal y el submareal. Algunos insectos depredadores terrestres parecen aprovechar los parches de insectos sobre algas para forrajeo, generando interacciones laterales con el intermareal. Discutimos la posible membrecía comunitaria de los insectos y las perspectivas de investigación sugeridas por este estudio
