Casearia sylvestris Swartz (Salicaceae) ou guaçatonga é uma árvore nativa do México, da América Central, e da América do Sul, com grande importância ecológica, farmacológica, e comercial. No entanto, como a maioria das espécies nativas de interesse medicinal no Brasil, a guaçatonga não é cultivada comercialmente, sendo obtida por extrativismo. O presente trabalho foi conduzido com o objetivo de testar um protocolo de propagação vegetativa de guaçatonga por meio da estaquia, visando identificar qual a melhor estação do ano para o enraizamento de estacas e avaliar o efeito da utilização do regulador vegetal ácido indolbutírico (AIB). No outono, inverno e primavera de 2007, e no verão de 2008, estacas caulinares semilenhosas de 12-14 cm de comprimento e com duas folhas foram preparadas e tratadas com AIB (0, 1000, 2000 e 3000 mg L-1), em solução alcoólica, através da imersão rápida por 10 segundos da base das estacas, e foram plantadas em tubetes contendo substrato Plantmax HT® em casa-de-vegetação sob nebulização intermitente. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com 4 repetições, 4 tratamentos, e 16 estacas por parcela. Todos os experimentos foram avaliados após 90 dias, sendo que para dois deles (primavera 2007 e verão 2008) prolongou-se o tempo de permanência em casa-de-vegetação para melhor desenvolvimento das raízes. Foram avaliados os parâmetros: porcentagem de estacas enraizadas, porcentagem de estacas vivas (com calos e sem raízes, sem calos e sem raízes), porcentagem de folhas retidas, porcentagem de estacas mortas, número de raízes, comprimento das três maiores raízes (cm), e média da massa seca das raízes (mg). Não ocorreu enraizamento nas estacas retiradas no outono e no inverno. Com as estacas retiradas na primavera obteve-se 39,1% de enraizamento. Estacas coletadas no verão não responderam como o esperado, apresentando, após 240 dias, 6,3% de enraizamento no tratamento com 3000 mg L-1 de AIB. O AIB até 3000 mg L-1 não estimulou o enraizamento de estacas de guaçatonga e a melhor estação do ano para a estaquia é a primavera.

Casearia sylvestris Swartz (Salicaceae), or "guaçatonga", is a tree native to Mexico and Central and South America, with great ecological, pharmacological and commercial relevance. Similarly to most native species of medicinal interest in Brazil, "guaçatonga" is not commercially cultivated and is obtained by means of extraction. The aim of this study was to test a protocol for the vegetative propagation of "guaçatonga" by means of stem cutting, identifying the best season for stem rooting and assessing the effect of using the growth regulator indolebutyric acid (IBA). In the fall, winter and spring 2007 and summer 2008, semi-hardwood cuttings with 12-14 cm length and two leaves were prepared and treated with IBA (0, 1000, 2000 and 3000 mg L-1), in alcohol solution, by rapidly immersing for 10 seconds the base of cuttings and planting them in tubes containing Plantmax HT® in greenhouse under intermittent nebulization. Experimental design was completely randomized with 4 replicates, 4 treatments and 16 cuttings per plot. All experiments were evaluated after 90 days, and for two of them the time of maintenance in greenhouse was prolonged in order to improve root development. The following parameters were evaluated: percentage of rooted cuttings, percentage of live cuttings (with callus and without roots, without callus and without roots), percentage of retained leaves, percentage of dead cuttings, number of roots, length of the largest roots (cm) and mean dry mass of roots (mg). There was no rooting on cuttings collected during the fall and the winter. For cuttings collected in the spring, 39.1% rooting was obtained. Cuttings collected in the summer did not show the expected results, presenting after 240 days 6.3% rooting when treated with 3000 mg L-1 IBA. Up to 3000 mg L-1, IBA did not stimulate the rooting of "guaçatonga" cuttings and the best season for cutting is spring.

Melaleuca alternifolia tem como produto principal o óleo essencial extraído das folhas devido às propriedades antifúngicas e antibacterianas. Pouco se tem relatado sobre a propagação desta espécie, sendo a miniestaquia uma alternativa para a propagação vegetativa de clones superiores visando à implantação de campo de produção. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de diferentes substratos, concentrações de AIB, e tipo de miniestaca, no enraizamento de Melaleuca alternifolia. No primeiro experimento foram testados os substratos, areia de granulometria média, Plantmax HT®, Golden-Mix® e vermiculita. No segundo experimento foram avaliadas diferentes concentrações de AIB (0, 500, 1000 e 2000 mg L-1), em dois tipos de miniestacas (apical e mediana). As miniestacas foram confeccionadas com 5 cm de comprimento, mantidas em casa de vegetação com nebulização intermitente, e, após 45 dias do plantio, foram avaliadas as porcentagens de miniestacas enraizadas, com calos e não responsivas, o número de raízes formadas por miniestaca e o comprimento das três maiores raízes (cm). O substrato Golden-Mix® e as miniestacas coletadas da porção apical do ramo submetidas ao tratamento com 500 mg L-1 de AIB apresentaram maior porcentagem de enraizamento e melhor qualidade do sistema radicial.

Melaleuca alternifolia has as major product the essential oil extracted from its leaves due to its antifungal and antibacterial properties. There are scarce reports about the propagation of this species, and minicutting is an alternative for vegetative propagation of superior clones in order to establish a production field. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different substrates, IBA levels and types of minicuttings on the rooting of Melaleuca alternifolia. In the first experiment, the following substrates were tested: medium sand, Plantmax HT®, Golden-Mix® and vermiculite. In the second experiment, different IBA levels (0, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg L-1) were tested for two minicutting types (apical and medium). Minicuttings were prepared with 5 cm length and were kept in a greenhouse with intermittent mist; then, at 45 days after planting, we evaluated: the percentages of rooted minicuttings, with callus and non-responsive, the number of roots per minicutting and the length of the three longest roots. The substrate Golden-Mix® and the minicuttings collected from the apical part of the branch and treated with 500 mg L-1 IBA presented the largest rooting percentage and the best root system quality.

A adubação nitrogenada influencia o teor e a qualidade dos óleos essenciais de plantas aromáticas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência de diferentes fontes e doses de nitrogênio na produção de biomassa e teor do óleo essencial de M. x piperita. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 x 3 (duas fontes de nitrogênio e três doses). A aplicação nitrogenada de cobertura foi realizada 30 dias após o transplante das mudas. O óleo essencial foi extraído pelo processo de hidrodestilação em aparelho graduado Clevenger e sua composição química foi analisada por cromatografia gasosa acoplada à espectrometria de massa. As fontes e doses de nitrogênio não influenciaram significativamente a biomassa de folhas e ramos, assim como a produtividade e o teor do óleo essencial. No entanto, a fonte de nitrogênio pode alterar significativamente a composição do óleo essencial de M. x piperita. O teor de mentol e neomentol foi menor quando 40 kg ha-1 de uréia foi aplicada, em comparação com a mesma dose de sulfato de amônio. Os teores de mentona foram influenciados apenas pela fonte de nitrogênio, onde níveis mais elevados foram observados quando o sulfato de amônio foi aplicado. Nenhuma alteração nos teores de mentofurano foi encontrada para as diferentes fontes e doses de nitrogênio. Considerando a grande importância econômica de mentol presente no óleo essencial de menta, os resultados obtidos indicaram que a utilização de 20 kg ha-1 de nitrogênio é suficiente para garantir a boa produtividade de óleo essencial e alto teor de mentol, e que altas doses de uréia devem ser evitadas.

Nitrogen fertilization affects the essential oil yield and composition of aromatic plants. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen sources and doses on biomass production and essential oil yield and composition of M. x piperita L. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with four replications and the treatments in a 2 x 3 factorial design, corresponding to two nitrogen sources and three nitrogen doses. The nitrogen topdressing was applied 30 days after planting. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodestilation using a Clevenger apparatus, and the composition was analyzed by gas chromatography and coupled to a mass spectrometry. The nitrogen sources and doses did not significantly affect the leaf and stem biomass, as well as the essential oil yield and productivity. However, the nitrogen source can significantly change the essential oil composition of M. x piperita. The level of menthol and neomenthol was lower when 40 kg ha-1 of urea was applied compared to the same dose of ammonium sulphate. Menthone levels were affected only by the nitrogen source, where higher levels were observed when ammonium sulphate was applied. No changes on menthofurane levels were found for different nitrogen sources and doses. Considering the great economic importance of menthol from mint essential oils, the obtained results indicated that the use of 20 kg ha-1 of nitrogen is enough to guarantee satisfactory essential oil yield and great menthol levels and that high doses of urea should be avoided.

Apesar de serem propagadas por sementes, as espécies de Lavandula deveriam ser preferencialmente propagadas por estaquia devido a grande falta de uniformidade causada pela primeira, enquanto que a propagação assexual da alfazema permite maior homogeneidade da lavoura e o uso de clones de alta qualidade aumentaria as chances de se obter óleo essencial de alta qualidade. No entanto, o baixo poder de enraizamento e o mercado restrito de clones superiores têm sido problemas para a propagação vegetativa de espécies de alfazema. O objetivo deste trabalho foi definir qual tipo e tamanho de estaca seriam mais adequados para a propagação de L. dentata, espécie muito produtiva de Lavandula, por estaquia. Estacas com 5, 8, 10 ou 13 cm das partes apical e basal de ramos de plantas matrizes de L. dentata foram colocados em bandejas de isopor com o substrato Plantmax HT® e mantidas em casa de vegetação sob nebulização por dois meses. As médias de número de raízes, comprimento da raiz mais longa, massa fresca e seca de raízes e porcentagem de enraizamento foram avaliadas. Estacas apicais apresentaram enraizamento de 97,9% e 13,2 raízes por estaca em média e as estacas basais 93,7% de enraizamento e 2,98 raízes por estaca. Estacas apicais com pelo menos 10 cm de comprimento foram consideradas as mais adequadas para a propagação da L. dentata por estaquia.

Even though the Lavandula species may be propagated by seeds, it should not be the preferred propagation method because it causes a great lack of uniformity. On the other hand, asexually propagated lavender crops would provide more homogeneous crops, and clones from high quality plant material would increase the odds for obtaining a higher quality essential oil. However, problems such as poor rooting and restrict market availability for superior clones have been a problem in vegetative propagation of the Lavandula species. The objective of this work was to define which type and size of cutting is more adequate for cutting propagation of L. dentata, a very productive Lavandula species. Cuttings with 5, 8, 10 or 13 cm and from the apical or basal parts of stems cut from L. dentata stock plants were placed in Plantmax HT® filled polystyrene foam trays and kept under intermittent mist system for two months. Averages of root number, length of the longest root, fresh and dry root weight, and percentage of rooting were evaluated. Apical cuttings combined 97.9% rooting with an average of 13.2 roots per cutting and basal cuttings 93.7% rooting with 2.98 roots per cutting. Apical cuttings with at least 10 cm in length were considered the most adequate for cutting propagation of L. dentata.

A produção de óleos essenciais nas plantas aromáticas é influenciada por fatores bióticos e abióticos. A demanda por esses produtos tem aumentado, sendo os óleos essenciais do gênero Mentha de grande interesse nas indústrias farmacêutica, de cosméticos, alimentícia e agrícola, principalmente em função do composto mentol. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de três espaçamentos de plantio (0,60 x 0,15 m; 0,60 x 0,30 m e 0,60 x 0,45 m) e duas épocas de colheita (60 e 90 dias após o plantio) na espécie Mentha campestris Schur. O experimento foi conduzido no Centro de Estações Experimentais do Canguiri-UFPR, em Pinhais-PR, no período de janeiro a abril de 2008. O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso em esquema de parcelas subdivididas. Houve diferença significativa para todas as variáveis analisadas. As massas secas de folhas, ramos e total foram maiores que na primeira época. Para a biomassa seca de folhas foram observados maiores valores no menor espaçamento de plantio. O rendimento de óleo essencial foi maior na segunda época de colheita e nos espaçamentos maiores. A produtividade do óleo também foi maior na segunda época de colheita, porém no espaçamento mais adensado. Pode-se concluir como recomendação para M. campestris Schur o espaçamento 0,60 x 0,15 m e colheita aos 90 dias, por terem atingido maior biomassa, rendimento de óleo essencial e produtividade de mentol por hectare.

Essential oil production in aromatic plants is influenced by biotic and abiotic factors. The demand for these products has increased, and essential oils from the genus Mentha have been of great interest for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and agronomic industries, especially because of the compound menthol. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of three row spaces (0.60 x 0.15 m; 0.60 x 0.30 m and 0.60 x 0.45 m) and two harvest times (60 and 90 days after planting) on the species Mentha campestris Schur. The experiment was carried out at Canguiri Experimental Stations-UFPR, in Pinhais, Paraná State , Brazil, between January and April 2008. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in split-plot. There was significant difference for all variables. In the second harvest time, leaf, branch and total dry yields were higher than those in the first time. For leaf dry mass, the highest values were observed in the narrowest space. Essential oil yield was higher in the second harvest and in wider rows. Essential oil productivity was also higher in the second harvest time, but in the narrowest row. The space 0.60 x 0.15 m and harvest at 90 days can be recommended due to their higher biomass, essential oil yield and menthol productivity per hectare.

A espinheira-santa (Maytenus muelleri - Celastraceae) é a planta medicinal nativa do Sul do Brasil, cujas folhas são tradicionalmente utilizadas pela medicina popular para o tratamento de úlceras e outros problemas gástricos. Existem poucos trabalhos publicados sobre a produção de mudas e técnicas de propagação vegetativa da espécie. A propagação de espinheira-santa por estaquia poderia ser um método eficiente para obtenção de material homogêneo, com características genéticas desejáveis, produzido a partir de plantas matrizes selecionadas. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo estudar os efeitos da aplicação de ácido indol butírico (AIB), em solução e em pó, no enraizamento de estacas de espinheira-santa coletadas nas quatro estações do ano (abril/2005 a janeiro/2006), bem como averiguar, por meio de análises anatômicas e histoquímicas das estacas, a presença de possíveis impedimentos à iniciação do enraizamento adventício. Estacas provenientes de ramos de plantas matrizes de seis anos cultivadas da Estação Experimental do Canguiri, Pinhais, PR, foram coletadas e tratadas com AIB (0, 1500, 3000 mg L-1 ou mg kg-1), em solução alcoólica (50% v/v) e em talco. Aos 365 dias foram avaliadas as porcentagens de estacas enraizadas e mortas, número e comprimento médio de raízes formadas por estaca. Análises anatômicas e histoquímicas com lugol e cloreto férrico foram realizadas. A estação mais promissora para o enraizamento foi o verão/2006 com 62,50% para o tratamento controle, devido à menor lignficação dos ramos no período de intenso crescimento vegetativo. O número médio de raízes formadas por estaca foi de 6,94 (solução) e o comprimento médio de raízes formadas/estaca chegou a 4,82 cm nesta mesma estação. As concentrações de AIB aplicadas não foram eficientes na indução radicial, independentemente do modo de aplicação. Foi detectada a presença de uma camada quase contínua de fibras e braquiesclereídes, a qual constitui barreira anatômica à indução radicial. Os testes histoquímicos revelaram a presença de amido e de compostos fenólicos nas estacas, em todas as estações do ano. A dificuldade ou demora no enraizamento não pode ser justificada pela falta de reservas de amido nos tecidos das estacas, mas pode ser justificada pela presença de compostos fenólicos, possivelmente do grupo dos monofenóis, que causam a degradação do AIA, interferindo negativamente na indução do enraizamento.

"Espinheira-santa" (Maytenus muelleri - Celastraceae) is a medicinal plant native to Southern Brazil, the leaves of which are traditionally used in popular medicine for the treatment of stomach ulcers and other gastric problems. There are few published studies about seedling production and vegetative propagation techniques for this species. The propagation of "espinheira-santa" by cuttings could be an efficient method to obtain homogeneous material, with desirable genetic characteristics, produced from selected mother plants. This paper aimed to study the effects of indolebutyric acid (IBA) application, in solution and in powder, on the rooting of "espinheira-santa" cuttings, collected in four seasons (April/2005 to January/2006), as well as to investigate, by means of cutting anatomical and histochemical analyses, the presence of possible impediments to adventitious rooting initiation. Cuttings from branches of six-year mother plants grown at "Estação Experimental do Canguiri", Pinhais, Paraná State, Brazil, were collected and treated with IBA (0, 1500, 3000 mg L-1 or mg kg-1) in alcoholic solution (50% v/v) and in powder. After 365 days, the percentages of rooted and dead cuttings, the number and mean length of roots/cutting were evaluated. Anatomical and histochemical analyses were performed with lugol and ferric chloride. The most promising season for rooting was Summer/2006, with 62.50% of rooting for the control treatment, due to the lesser lignification degree of branches in intense vegetative growth period. The mean number of roots/cutting was 6.94 (solution) and the mean length of roots/cutting was 4.82 cm in that same season. The applied IBA concentrations were not efficient in inducing root growth, regardless of the application method. An almost continuous layer of fibers and stone cells was detected, constituting an anatomical barrier for rooting induction. The histochemical tests revealed the presence of starch and phenolic compounds in cuttings, in all seasons. The difficulty or delay in rooting cannot be justified by the absence of starch reserve in the cutting tissues but by the presence of phenolic compounds, possibly of the group of monophenols, which cause IAA degradation, negatively affecting rooting induction.

O jambolão propaga-se normalmente por sementes o que acarreta variabilidade nas plantas descendentes e um problema quando o objetivo é a formação de pomar comercial. O desenvolvimento de protocolo de propagação vegetativa por meio da estaquia possibilitaria a reprodução de todas as características da planta matriz, uniformidade nas populações e facilidade de propagação. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito dos ácidos naftaleno acético (ANA) e indolilbutírico (AIB) no enraizamento de estacas de jambolão. Estacas da região mediana dos ramos foram confeccionadas com 12 cm de comprimento, cortadas em bisel na base e reto acima da última gema axilar, mantendo-se um par de folhas reduzidas à metade. As bases das estacas foram imersas por 10 segundos em soluções aquosas contendo ANA ou AIB nas concentrações de 0, 500, 1.000 e 1.500 mg L-1. Para o plantio foram utilizadas bandejas plásticas contendo areia de granulometria média. As estacas foram mantidas em casa-de-vegetação com nebulização intermitente e após 120 dias do plantio, foram avaliadas as variáveis: porcentagem de estacas enraizadas, com calos, vivas (não enraizadas e sem calos) e mortas, comprimento das três maiores raízes (cm) e número de raízes formadas por estaca. Os melhores resultados de enraizamento foram verificados com 1.000 mg L-1 para ambos os fitorreguladores testados. A porcentagem de enraizamento foi ligeiramente superior com a utilização de ANA quando comparada ao AIB.

Jambul usually propagates by seeds, which causes variability in the descendant plants and represents a problem in the formation of commercial orchards. The development of a protocol for vegetative propagation by cuttings would enable the reproduction of all features of the Mother plant, uniformity in populations and easy propagation. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and indolebutyric acid (IBA) on rooting of jambul cuttings. Twelve-cm-long cuttings from the median region of branches were prepared through bevel cut in the base and right cut above the last axillary bud, keeping one pair of halved leaves. Cutting bases were immersed for 10s in aqueous solutions containing NAA or IBA at 0, 500, 1000 and 1500 mg L-1 concentrations. Plastic trays containing medium sand were used in the planting. The cuttings were kept in a greenhouse under intermittent nebulization and, at 120 days after planting, the following variables were evaluated: percentage of rooted, with calluses, alive (not-rooted and without calluses) and dead cuttings; length of the three largest roots (cm); and number of roots per cutting. The best rooting was observed by using 1000 mg L-1 of both tested plant growth regulators. Rooting percentage was slightly higher under NAA relative to IBA.

Devido a pouca informação existente sobre adubação para espinheira-santa, e a crescente procura desta espécie, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da calagem, adubação orgânica, mineral e omissão de nutrientes sobre o crescimento de Maytenus ilicifolia. As mudas foram produzidas por sementes e, em agosto de 2006, foram transferidas para vasos com 8 dm³ contendo Latossolo Vermelho Distrófico. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação no delineamento inteiramente casualizado em arranjo bifatorial, totalizando 12 tratamentos com 4 repetições, cujos tratamentos foram: sem adubação com calagem (T1), sem adubação e sem calagem (T7), adubação orgânica (T2 e T8), adubação mineral NPK (T3 e T9), mineral -N (T4 e T10), mineral -P (T5 e T11) e mineral -K (T6 e T12). Os tratamentos T1 ao T6 receberam calcário na dose equivalente a 7,06 t ha-1 de carbonato de cálcio e os tratamentos T7 ao T12 foram testados na ausência de calagem. Após 314 dias da instalação do experimento, foram analisadas as variáveis: massa seca foliar (MSF), massa seca do caule (MSC) e da raiz (MSR), massa seca da parte aérea (MSPA), área foliar (AF), volume radicular (VR), altura (H), diâmetro (D), relação raiz parte aérea (R/PA) e relação altura diâmetro (H/D). A partir dos resultados conclui-se que a calagem, quando utilizada como prática isolada, não resulta em benefícios significativos ao crescimento das plantas. Na presença de calagem, tanto a adubação mineral quanto a orgânica podem ser utilizadas. Na ausência de calagem, a adubação orgânica mostrou-se mais favorável em estimular o crescimento das plantas. Em condições de adubação mineral, independente da presença ou não da calagem, o fósforo mostrou-se importante à nutrição de espinheira-santa.

Since there is scarce information about fertilization for "espinheira-santa" and an increasing search for this species, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of liming, organic and mineral fertilization, and nutrient omission on Maytenus ilicifolia growth. Seedlings were produced from seeds, and in August 2006 they were transferred to 8 dm³ pots containing Dystrophic Red Latosol. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse and the design was completely randomized, in bi-factorial arrangement, totaling 12 treatments and four replicates; treatments were: without fertilization and with liming (T1), without fertilization and without liming (T7), organic fertilization (T2 and T8), mineral fertilization NPK (T3 and T9), mineral -N (T4 and T10), mineral -P (T5 and T11) and mineral -K (T6 and T12). T1 to T6 received lime at the dose equivalent to 7.06 t ha-1 calcium carbonate, and T7 to T12 were tested in the absence of liming. After 314 days of the experiment installation, the following variables were analyzed: leaf dry mass (LDM), stem (STDM) and root dry mass (RDM), shoot dry mass (SDM), leaf area (LA), root volume (RV), height (H), diameter (D), root and shoot ratio (R/S), and height and diameter ratio (H/D). Liming alone does not result in significant benefits to plant growth. In the presence of liming, both mineral and organic fertilization can be employed. In the absence of liming, organic fertilization showed to be more favorable in stimulating plant growth. Under mineral fertilization conditions, irrespective of the presence or absence of liming, phosphorus showed to be important for the nutrition of "espinheira-santa".

Visando aumentar a eficiência de estabelecimento in vitro dos porta-enxertos de videira `Jales' e `Campinas', foram conduzidos alguns experimentos com ápices meristemáticos e segmentos nodais, retirados de brotações de estacas lenhosas. Foram testadas diversas concentrações de 6-benzilaminopurina (BAP) em meio de cultura MS com a metade da concentração de sais. O efeito desta citocinina foi marcante sobre o crescimento dos explantes. O aumento da concentração de BAP estimulou o crescimento e expansão foliar dos ápices meristemáticos e das gemas axilares até a concentração de 10µM. O uso de 20µM de BAP reduziu o crescimento dos segmentos nodais. Conclui-se que o estabelecimento dos porta-enxertos pode ser realizado em meio MS, com a metade da concentração de sais, suplementado com 10µM de BAP.

Aiming to increase the efficiency of in vitro establishment of grapevine rootstocks `Jales' and `Campinas', some experiments were carried out with shoot tips and nodal segments, taken from shoots of hardwood cuttings. Several 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) concentrations were tested in MS medium with half salt strength. This cytokinin had a markedly effect on the explant growth. The increase of BAP concentration stimulated growth and foliar expansion of shoot tips and axillary buds up to 10µM. The use of 20µM, BAP led to a reduced growth of nodal segments. It was concluded that rootstock establishment can be done in an half strength MS medium supplemented with 10µM of BAP.

Com o objetivo de estudar a viabilidade da utilização de turfa e de bagaço-de-cana como substrato para a produção de mudas de tomateiro 'Rio Grande' e maracujá-amarelo realizou-se experimento, cujos tratamentos consistiram de turfa (100%), bagaço-de-cana (100%) e suas misturas em proporções volumétricas de 25, 5O e 75%. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com 4 repetições. A maior quantidade de bagaço-de-cana conferiu maior porosidade e aeração ao substrato, favorecendo a emergência do tomateiro e desfavorecendo a do maracujá-amarelo. Para esta espécie, a emergência foi melhor nos tratamentos com maiores porcentagens de turfa, onde a retenção de água pelo substrato foi superior. Entretanto, a utilização integral de cada um dos substratos não proporcionou condições adequadas ao desenvolvimento de ambas as espécies, resultando mudas piores. O tratamento constituído pela mistura de 50% destes materiais foi superior tanto para o maracujá como para o tomate, sendo recomendada como um bom substrato para uso hortícola.

This work was carried out in order to verify the potential of peat and sugar cane husk mixtures for 'Rio Grande' tomato and yellow passion fruit seedling production. The treatments consisted of peat (100%), sugar cane-husks (100%) and mixtures in the following volume rates: 25,50 and 75%. The statistical design was completely randomized with 4 replicates. The tomato emergence was greater with the addition of more sugar cane-husks, which increased the porosity and aeration of the substrate. The results were, however, opposite for the passion fruit emergence, which was better as peat content increased, due to the increased water retention of the substrate. The worse seedlings for both species were obtained with peat and sugar cane-husks alone. The best treatment for passion fruit and tomato growth was the mixture at 50%, therefore being recommended as a good nursery substrate.
