ABSTRACT This study aimed to analyze changes in the level of functional mobility (FM) between patients with solid tumors discharged from intensive care units (ICU) and hospital discharge and the possible factors associated with FM recovery. This is a retrospective cohort study based on the analysis of medical records of patients with solid tumors who were discharged from an oncology ICU from January 1, 2018 to February 28, 2020. The primary outcome was the change in FM after ICU discharge, considering the difference between the final score at ICU discharge and the final score at hospital discharge, estimated by the ICU Mobility Scale (IMS). The association between continuous variables and outcomes was performed by univariate linear regression analysis. In total, 65 patients with a median age of 61.4 years (interquartile range - IQR 54-69) were included. The mean length of hospital stay after discharge from the ICU was 19.0 days (±24.04). The mean IMS score at ICU discharge was 2.62 (±2.56) and the mean IMS score at hospital discharge was 6.08 (±3.26). Patients who underwent surgery to treat the primary tumor had a score 1.89 higher compared to those who did not undergo surgery (p=0.048). Therefore, we observed improvement in FM in patients with solid tumors between ICU discharge and hospital discharge, and patients who underwent surgery showed better FM.

RESUMEN Este estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar los cambios en la movilidad funcional (MF) de pacientes con tumores sólidos entre el alta de la unidad de cuidados intensivos (UCI) y el alta del hospital, y los posibles factores asociados con la recuperación de la MF. Se trata de un estudio de cohorte retrospectivo realizado desde el análisis de historias clínicas de pacientes con tumores sólidos que fueron dados de alta de la UCI oncológica entre el 1 de enero de 2018 y el 28 de febrero de 2020. El resultado primario fue el cambio en la MF después del alta de la UCI considerando la diferencia entre la puntuación final al alta de la UCI y la puntuación final al alta del hospital, que se calculó mediante la ICU mobility scale (IMS). La asociación entre las variables continuas y los resultados se realizó mediante análisis de regresión lineal univariante. Se incluyeron un total de 65 pacientes con mediana de edad de 61,4 años (rango intercuartílico -RIC 54-69). La estancia media de hospitalización tras el alta de la UCI fue de 19,0 días (±24,04). La puntuación media de IMS al alta de la UCI fue de 2,62 (±2,56), y la del alta del hospital 6,08 (±3,26). Los pacientes que se sometieron a cirugía para tratar el tumor primario tuvieron una puntuación 1,89 veces mayor en comparación con los que no se sometieron a tratamiento quirúrgico (p=0,048). Se concluye que hubo una mejoría en la MF en pacientes con tumores sólidos entre el alta de la UCI y el alta del hospital, y los pacientes sometidos a cirugía mostraron una mejor recuperación de la MF.

RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar as mudanças na mobilidade funcional (MF) de pacientes com tumores sólidos entre a alta da unidade de terapia intensiva (UTI) e a alta hospitalar e os possíveis fatores associados à recuperação da MF. Trata-se de um estudo de coorte retrospectivo baseado na análise de prontuários de pacientes com tumores sólidos que receberam alta da UTI de uma unidade oncológica entre 1º de janeiro de 2018 e 28 de fevereiro de 2020. O desfecho primário foi a mudança na MF após a alta da UTI considerando a diferença entre a pontuação final na alta da UTI e a pontuação final na alta hospitalar, calculada através da ICU mobility scale (IMS). A associação entre as variáveis contínuas e os desfechos foi realizada por meio da análise de regressão linear univariada. No total, foram incluídos 65 pacientes com idade mediana de 61,4 anos (variação interquartil - IQR 54-69). O tempo médio de internação após a alta da UTI foi de 19,0 dias (±24,04). A pontuação média da IMS no momento da alta da UTI foi de 2,62 (±2,56), e a pontuação média da IMS no momento da alta hospitalar foi de 6,08 (±3,26). Os pacientes que realizaram cirurgia para o tratamento do tumor primário tiveram uma pontuação 1,89 vez maior em comparação aos que não foram submetidos a tratamento cirúrgico (p=0,048). Concluindo, foi observada melhora da MF em pacientes com tumores sólidos entre a alta da UTI e a alta hospitalar, e os pacientes submetidos à cirurgia apresentaram uma melhor recuperação da MF.

Abstract Whole-body bone scintigraphy (WB-BS) is used for detecting and monitoring metastatic spread of prostate cancer (PCa) and to investigate bone pain episodes. To investigate the impact of a positive WB-BS on pain-relieving medicine prescription in PCa patients, a single-center, retrospective cohort study with PCa patients classified as positive for bone metastases (BM) by WB-BS was conducted. Demographic, clinical, and ambulatory pain-relieving medicine prescription data were evaluated. Pain-relieving medicines were categorized according to the WHO ‘Analgesic Ladder’. Regimens adopted before and after WB-BS were compared. Differences were considered significant at p<0.05. A total of 180 PCa patients were diagnosed with BM, 64.4% of whom were ≥65 years of age. Thirty-three patients were prescribed analgesics only after WB-BS, mostly including NSAIDs and weak opioids. Pain-relieving prescription changed after WB-BS in patients with prescriptions before and after WB-BS, with a reduction in NSAIDs and adjuvants and an increase in weak and strong opioids. In addition, 40% of patients with WHO analgesic step 1 drugs and 21.7% of patients with WHO step 2 drugs before WB-BS changed to other WHO steps after WB-BS. Pain-relieving prescriptions changed after a positive WB-BS, providing evidence that it could contribute to clinical management of painful metastatic PCa patients.

Resumo Objetivo Comparar a ultrassonografia convencional das mamas (US) com a ultrassonografia automatizada das mamas (ABUS) no rastreio do câncer. Métodos Realizamos um estudo transversal com pacientes com mamas mamograficamente densas, sendo avaliadas pela US e pela ABUS. A US foi realizada por radiologistas e a ABUS por técnicos de mamografia e analisada por radiologistas especializados em mama. A classificação Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BIRADS) do exame e das lesões o tempo de leitura e de aquisição foram avaliados. A análise estatística foi realizada através de medidas de tendência central, dispersão e frequências, teste t de Student e regressão logística univariada, através do odds ratio, com intervalo de confiança de 95%, e com p<0,05 sendo considerado estatisticamente significante. Resultados Foram avaliadas 440 pacientes. Em relação às lesões, a US detectou 15 (7,7%) BI-RADS 2, 175 (89,3%) BI-RADS 3 e 6 (3%) BI-RADS 4, das quais 3 foram confirmadas, por biópsia, como carcinomas ductais invasivos e 3 falso-positivos. A ABUS identificou 12 (12,9%) BI-RADS 2, 75 (80,7%) BI-RADS 3 e 6 (6,4%) BI-RADS 4, incluindo 3 lesões detectadas pela US e confirmadas como carcinomas ductais invasivos, além de 1 carcinoma lobular invasivo e 2 lesões de alto risco não detectadas pela US. O tempo de leitura dos exames da ABUS foi estatisticamente inferior ao tempo do radiologista para realizar a US (p<0,001). A concordância foi de 80,9%. Um total de 219 lesões foram detectadas, das quais 70 por ambos os métodos, 126 observadas apenas pela US (84,9% não eram lesões suspeitas no ABUS) e 23 apenas pela ABUS. Conclusão Comparado à US, a ABUS permitiu adequado estudo complementar no rastreio do câncer de mamas heterogeneamente densas e extremamente densas.

Abstract Objective To compare hand-held breast ultrasound (HHBUS) and automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) as screening tool for cancer. Methods A cross-sectional study in patients with mammographically dense breasts was conducted, and both HHBUS and ABUS were performed. Hand-held breast ultrasound was acquired by radiologists and ABUS by mammography technicians and analyzed by breast radiologists. We evaluated the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) classification of the exam and of the lesion, as well as the amount of time required to perform and read each exam. The statistical analysis employed was measures of central tendency and dispersion, frequencies, Student t test, and a univariate logistic regression, through the odds ratio and its respective 95% confidence interval, and with p<0.05 considered of statistical significance. Results Atotal of 440 patientswere evaluated. Regarding lesions,HHBUS detected 15 (7.7%) BI-RADS 2, 175 (89.3%) BI-RADS 3, and 6 (3%) BI-RADS 4, with 3 being confirmed by biopsy as invasive ductal carcinomas (IDCs), and 3 false-positives. Automated breast ultrasound identified 12 (12.9%) BI-RADS 2, 75 (80.7%) BI-RADS 3, and 6 (6.4%) BI-RADS 4, including 3 lesions detected by HHBUS and confirmed as IDCs, in addition to 1 invasive lobular carcinoma and 2 high-risk lesions not detected by HHBUS. The amount of time required for the radiologist to read the ABUS was statistically inferior compared with the time required to read the HHBUS (p<0.001). The overall concordance was 80.9%. A total of 219 lesions were detected, from those 70 lesions by both methods, 126 only by HHBUS (84.9% not suspicious by ABUS) and 23 only by ABUS. Conclusion Compared with HHBUS, ABUS allowed adequate sonographic study in supplemental screening for breast cancer in heterogeneously dense and extremely dense breasts.

Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar a associação entre raça/cor da pele e estadiamento clínico em mulheres com câncer de mama em um hospital de referência para tratamento oncológico do Sistema Único de Saúde. Trata-se de estudo seccional com 863 mulheres de 18 anos de idade ou mais, com câncer de mama incidente e estadiamento clínico até IIIC, matriculadas em um hospital de referência no Rio de Janeiro e entrevistadas entre novembro de 2016 e outubro de 2018. Foram coletadas variáveis sociodemográficas, de hábitos de vida e clínicas. Utilizou-se o escore de propensão com a técnica de ponderação para balancear os grupos de comparação quanto aos potenciais confundidores. A associação entre raça/cor da pele e estadiamento clínico foi analisada por meio das equações de estimação generalizada após balanceamento. O nível de significância de 5% foi adotado em todas as análises. Observou-se que 35,9% das mulheres se declararam brancas; 21,3%, pretas; e 42,8%, pardas. Mulheres de cor da pele preta apresentaram 63% mais chance de ter estadiamento II e III quando comparadas com as brancas (OR=1,63; IC95% 1,01-2,65). Conclui-se que mulheres pretas são diagnosticadas com tumores mais avançados quando comparadas com mulheres brancas.

Abstract This study sought to analyze the association between race/skin color and clinical staging in women with breast cancer at a referral hospital for cancer treatment of the Brazilian National Health System. This is a cross-sectional study of 863 women aged 18 or more, with incident breast cancer and clinical staging up to IIIC enrolled at a cancer referral hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and interviewed between November 2016 and October 2018. Sociodemographic, lifestyle and clinical variables were evaluated. We used the propensity score with the weighting technique to balance comparison groups for potential confounders. The association between race/skin color and clinical staging was analyzed using generalized estimation equations after balancing. A significance level of 5% was adopted in all analyzes. We observed that 35.9% of women declared themselves white; 21.3%, black; and 42.8%, brown. Black women were 63% more likely to have stage II and III when compared to white women (OR=1.63; 95% CI 1.01-2.65). In conclusion, black women are diagnosed with more advanced tumors when compared to white women.

Resumo Este artigo tem como objetivo discutir as possibilidades de tratamentos conservadores e não medicamentosos para o linfedema. Foi realizada uma revisão não sistemática da literatura, com a inclusão de estudos realizados em humanos com diferentes tipos de linfedema. Várias abordagens de tratamento foram relatadas, sendo a terapia descongestiva complexa considerada o tratamento mais eficaz para o linfedema de membros. Outros tratamentos conservadores foram propostos, como taping, terapia por ondas de choque extracorpórea, acupuntura, fotobiomodulação, endermologia, compressão pneumática intermitente e eletroterapia de baixa intensidade e baixa frequência. A escolha da abordagem terapêutica a ser empregada deve considerar as características do linfedema, a experiência do terapeuta e os desejos do paciente. Além disso, como é uma condição crônica, o paciente deve aderir ao tratamento. Para isso, a proposta terapêutica pode ser a chave para um melhor controle do volume do membro.

Abstract This article aims to discuss the possibilities of conservative and non-pharmacological treatments for lymphedema. A non-systematic review of the literature was carried out, including studies involving human subjects with different types of lymphedema. Several approaches to lymphedema treatment have been reported and Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT) has been considered the most effective treatment for limb lymphedema. Other conservative treatments have been proposed such as Taping, Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy, Acupuncture, Photobiomodulation Therapy, Endermologie, Intermittent Pneumatic Compression, and Low-frequency, Low-intensity Electrotherapy. The choice of the therapeutic approach to be employed should consider lymphedema characteristics, the therapist's experience, and the patient's wishes. In addition, since this is a chronic condition, the patient must adhere to the treatment. To this end, the therapeutic proposal may be the key to better control of limb volume.

MÉTODOS Foi realizada uma revisão da literatura nas principais bases de dados em busca de artigos que utilizaram instrumentos de avaliação em populações de trabalhadores entre 2007 e 2017. Posteriormente foram recuperados os conteúdos dos instrumentos identificados e dois avaliadores analisaram seus itens para verificar a compatibilidade com as categorias do core set da Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade para reabilitação profissional. METHODS A review of the literature was conducted in the main databases in search of articles that used assessment instruments in populations of workers between 2007 and 2017. Subsequently, the contents of the identified instruments were retrieved, and two evaluators analyzed their items to verify the compatibility with the categories of the core set of the International Classification of Functioning for professional rehabilitation. Cohen’s kappa coefficient was used to evaluate the agreement between the evaluators. RESULTS Five specific and eight generic instruments were selected to evaluate the functioning of workers. The analysis of the items of the total instruments allowed the definition of 58 categories (64.5%) of the core set with minimal overlap: 13 (76.5%) of the body functions component, 29 (72.5%) of the activities and participation component and 16 (49%) environmental factors. CONCLUSIONS The association of several instruments requires time and makes it difficult to use the classification. The development of instruments with direct association with its categories is essential to operationalize it.

RESUMO Objetivo: Caracterizar o perfil clínico e histológico, assim como o de tratamento oncológico, de pacientes com câncer de pulmão nos estádios precoce, localmente avançado (LA) e avançado/metastático (AM), diagnosticados entre 2000 e 2014 no Brasil. Métodos: Estudo epidemiológico transversal analítico com dados brasileiros obtidos de registros hospitalares de câncer do Instituto Nacional de Câncer José Alencar Gomes da Silva, localizado na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, e da Fundação Oncocentro de São Paulo, localizada na cidade de São Paulo, de 2000-2014. Resultados: Foram avaliados 73.167 pacientes com câncer de pulmão. As proporções de pacientes nos estádios precoce, LA e AM foram de 13,3%, 33,2% e 53,4%, respectivamente. Os pacientes em estádio precoce apresentavam idade mais avançada, adenocarcinoma como tipo histológico predominante e frequência estável ao longo do período do estudo; aqueles em estádio LA apresentaram mais frequentemente carcinoma de células escamosas, havendo uma redução significativa de sua frequência relativa no período do estudo; e aqueles em estádio AM tinham idade menor, predominância de adenocarcinoma, com um significativo aumento da sua frequência no período. O carcinoma de células pequenas correspondeu a 9,2% dos casos. A quimioterapia foi a principal modalidade de tratamento utilizada. Conclusões: A frequência do estádio AM mostrou estar em aumento durante o período de estudo, concomitantemente a uma expressiva redução na frequência do estádio LA e estabilidade do estádio precoce. O padrão de tratamento oncológico esteve em conformidade com as diretrizes internacionais de acordo com o estadiamento.

ABSTRACT Objective: To characterize the clinical and histological profile, as well as treatment patterns, of patients with early-stage, locally advanced (LA), or advanced/metastatic (AM) lung cancer, diagnosed between 2000 and 2014, in Brazil. Methods: This was an analytical cross-sectional epidemiological study employing data obtained for the 2000-2014 period from the hospital cancer registries of two institutions in Brazil: the José Alencar Gomes da Silva National Cancer Institute, in the city of Rio de Janeiro; and the São Paulo Cancer Center Foundation, in the city of São Paulo. Results: We reviewed the data related to 73,167 patients with lung cancer. The proportions of patients with early-stage, LA, and AM lung cancer were 13.3%, 33.2%, and 53.4%, respectively. The patients with early-stage lung cancer were older and were most likely to receive a histological diagnosis of adenocarcinoma; the proportion of patients with early-stage lung cancer remained stable throughout the study period. In those with LA lung cancer, squamous cell carcinoma predominated, and the proportion of patients with LA lung cancer decreased significantly over the period analyzed. Those with AM lung cancer were younger and were most likely to have adenocarcinoma; the proportion of patients with AM lung cancer increased significantly during the study period. Small cell carcinoma accounted for 9.2% of all cases. In our patient sample, the main treatment modality was chemotherapy. Conclusions: It is noteworthy that the frequency of AM lung cancer increased significantly during the study period, whereas that of LA lung cancer decreased significantly and that of early-stage lung cancer remained stable. Cancer treatment patterns, by stage, were in accordance with international guidelines.

Abstract Pathological parameters have been indicated as tumor prognostic factors in oral carcinoma. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of pathological parameters on prognosis of patients affected only by tongue and/or floor of the mouth squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Methodology: In total, 380 patients treated in the Brazilian National Cancer Institute (INCA) from 1999 to 2006 were included. These patients underwent radical resection followed by neck dissection. The clinical and pathological characteristics were recorded. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards model were used in survival analysis. Overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS) and disease-free interval (DFI) were estimated. Cox residuals were evaluated using the R software version 3.5.2. Worst OS, CSS and DFI were observed in patients with tumors in advanced pathological stages (p<0.001), with the presence of perineural invasion (p<0.001) and vascular invasion (p=0.005). Results: Advanced pathological stage and the presence of a poorly differentiated tumor were independent prognostic factors for OS and CSS. However, advanced pathological stage and perineural invasion were independent predictors of a shorter OS, DFI and CSS. Conclusion: Pathological stage and perineural invasion were the most significant pathological variables in survival analysis in tongue and/or floor of the mouth SCC.

Resumo Introdução O câncer do colo do útero é o terceiro tipo de câncer mais comum entre as mulheres em todo o mundo. Sua incidência é consideravelmente mais alta em países de baixa e média renda. Objetivo Verificar a prevalência de incapacidade em mulheres com câncer do colo do útero (CCU) utilizando a Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde (CIF) como referência. Método Estudo observacional transversal realizado com mulheres com CCU em tratamento em um hospital de referência no Rio de Janeiro. Foi aplicado o checklist da CIF e um instrumento específico de avaliação da qualidade de vida (FACT-Cx - Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cervix Cancer). Resultados Foram incluídas no estudo 116 mulheres. A maior parte foi diagnosticada no estádio IB, e mais da metade recebeu como tratamento a quimioterapia conjugada com radioterapia. A maior prevalência de incapacidade foi encontrada para a deficiência das estruturas do sistema reprodutivo (96,6%), seguido de problemas nas funções da energia e do impulso (70,3%), funções emocionais (70,7%) e limitação para carregar e transportar objetos (67,2%). O domínio do bem-estar emocional foi o mais comprometido de acordo coma análise realizada pelo FACT-Cx. Conclusão A prevalência de incapacidade em mulheres com CCU foi elevada para todos os componentes da CIF, refletindo o impacto tanto da doença quanto do seu tratamento na funcionalidade. A abordagem biopsicossocial deve ser incorporada nas rotinas de planejamento do cuidado oncológico para mulheres com câncer do colo do útero.

Abstract Background Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer among women worldwide. Its incidence is considerably higher in low and middle-income countries. Objective To verify the prevalence of disability in women with cervical cancer (CC) using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) as a reference. Method This is a cross-sectional observational study conducted with women with CC under treatment at a referral hospital in Rio de Janeiro. The ICF Checklist and a specific Quality of Life Assessment Tool (FACT - Cx, Cervix Cancer) were applied. Results A total of 116 women were included in the study. Most of them were diagnosed at stage IB, and more than half of them received chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy. The highest prevalence of disability was found for deficiency of reproductive system structures (96.6%), followed by problems with energy and impulse functions (70.3%), emotional functions (70.7%) and limitation for load and transport objects (67.2%). The domain of emotional well-being was the most compromised in the analysis by FACT-Cx. Conclusion The prevalence of disability in women with CC was high for all ICF components, reflecting the impact of both the disease and its treatment on functionality. The biopsychosocial approach should be incorporated into cancer care planning routines for women with cervical cancer.

Resumo Objetivo Analisar os fatores associados à qualidade de vida em mulheres com câncer de colo do útero tratadas em um hospital de referência no Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil. Métodos Estudo transversal em mulheres com diagnóstico de câncer do colo do útero emseguimento ambulatorial no Hospital de Câncer II (HCII) do Instituto Nacional de Câncer (INCA). Os dados foram coletados no período de março a agosto de 2015. Foram excluídas as mulheres em cuidados paliativos, comdificuldade de comunicação/cognição, que estavam em tratamento simultâneo para outros tipos de câncer, ou em quimioterapia e/ou radioterapia. Para a avaliação da qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde, foi utilizado um questionário específico para mulheres com câncer de colo do útero (Avaliação Funcional da Terapia do Câncer - Câncer Cervical (FACT-Cx, na sigla em inglês). O escore total do questionário varia de 0 a 168, com escores mais altos indicando melhor qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde. Resultados Foram incluídas 115 mulheres com uma média de idade de 52,64 anos (desvio padrão [DP] = 12,13). Os domínios de questões emocionais (16,61; DP = 4,55) e de bem-estar funcional (17,63; DP = 6,15) foram os que apresentaram os piores escores. Os fatores que tiveram associação com melhor qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde em mulheres com câncer de colo do útero foram ocupação atual, maior tempo após o tratamento e diagnóstico, e mulheres que haviamsido submetidas a histerectomia. Conclusão Considerando os domínios da qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde de mulheres tratadas para câncer do colo do útero, foi observado melhor escore nos domínios de bem-estar físico e social. Para amaioria dos domínios, osmelhores escores foram observados entre aquelas com ocupação atual, com mais tempo após o diagnóstico e tratamento, além daquelas que se submeteram a histerectomia.

Abstract Objective To analyze the factors associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in women with cervical cancer (CC) in a single center in Rio de Janeiro, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Methods A cross-sectional study in women with a diagnosis of CC followed-up in the gynecology outpatient clinic of the Hospital do Câncer II (HCII, in the Portuguese acronym) of the Instituto Nacional de Câncer (INCA, in the Portuguese acronym). The data were collected from March to August 2015. Women with palliative care, communication/cognition difficulty, undergoing simultaneous treatment for other types of cancer, or undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy were excluded. For the evaluation of the HRQoL, a specific questionnaire for women with CC was used (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy - Cervix Cancer [FACT-Cx]). The total score of the questionnaire ranges from 0 to 168, with higher scores indicating a better HRQoL. Results A total of 115 women were included in the present study, with a mean age of 52.64 years old (standard deviation [SD] = 12.13). The domains of emotional (16.61; SD = 4.55) and functional well-being (17.63; SD = 6.15) were those which presented the worst scores. The factors that had an association with better HRQoL in women with CC were having a current occupation, a longer time since the treatment and diagnosis, and women who had undergone hysterectomy. Conclusion Considering the domains of HRQoL of the women treated for cervical cancer, a better score was observed in the domains of physical and social/family wellbeing. For most domains, better scores were found between those with a current occupation, with a longer time after the diagnosis and treatment, and among those who had undergone a hysterectomy.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To analyze the factors associated with the presence of depression symptoms in women after breast cancer. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with 181 women with breast cancer, aged 57.0 years (SD = 9.5), who were undergoing treatment or after treatment in the Oncology Research Center in Florianópolis, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The questionnaire comprised items addressing general and health information, economic level, anthropometric measures, depression symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory), self-esteem (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale), and body image (Body Image After Breast Cancer Questionnaire). Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis were performed by chi-square and Fisher's exact tests to verify association, Mann-Whitney U test to compare the groups and Poisson regression to identify the prevalence ratio of the factors associated with presence of depression symptoms (p < 0.05). RESULTS: We found an association between the presence of depression symptoms and the group of younger women (aged 40–60 years), those who had another disease besides cancer, those who had mastectomy surgery, those who suffered from lymphedema, and those who presented low–medium self-esteem. Less educated women presented more depressive symptoms, as did women with worse body image on the subscales of limitations, transparency, and arm concerns. CONCLUSIONS: Age, educational attainment, diagnosis of other diseases, type of surgery, lymphedema, self-esteem, and body image were factors associated with the presence of depression symptoms in Brazilian women after breast cancer. Health professionals should be aware of these relationships and try to detect depression symptoms earlier and improve the care they provide to these women.
