RESUMO OBJETIVO Estimar a soroprevalência de anticorpos do vírus SARS-CoV-2 em escolares de quatro a 14 anos de idade residentes no município de São Paulo, segundo variáveis clínicas, demográficas, epidemiológicas e sociais, durante o período de fechamento das escolas como medida de controle da covid-19. MÉTODOS Realizou-se um inquérito sorológico em setembro de 2020 com amostra aleatória estratificada por tipo de rede de ensino (pública municipal, pública estadual e privada). Foi coletada amostra de sangue venoso utilizando-se o teste de imunoensaio de fluxo lateral da fabricante Wondfo para detecção de anticorpos totais contra o vírus SARS-CoV-2. Aplicaram-se questionários semiestruturados para o levantamento de dados clínicos, demográficos, sociais e epidemiológicos. RESULTADOS A soroprevalência de anticorpos do vírus SARS-CoV-2 em escolares foi de 16,6% (IC95% 15,4–17,8). O estudo encontrou soroprevalências mais elevadas na rede pública municipal (18,5%; IC95% 16,6–20,6) e estadual (16,2%; IC95% 14,4–18,2) em relação à rede privada (11,7; IC95% 10,0–13,7) e entre escolares da raça/cor preta e parda (18,4%; IC95% 16,8–20,2) e no estrato social mais vulnerável (18,5%; IC95% 16,9–20,2). A pesquisa identificou menores soroprevalências nos escolares que relataram seguir as medidas recomendadas de proteção contra a covid-19. CONCLUSÃO A soroprevalência de anticorpos contra o vírus SARS-CoV-2 atinge principalmente os escolares socialmente mais vulneráveis. Este estudo pode contribuir para embasar políticas públicas que reforcem a importância da suspensão das aulas presenciais e da necessidade de estratégias de medidas de proteção e acompanhamento do status sorológico daqueles que ainda não foram contemplados no calendário vacinal.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To estimate seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in schoolchildren aged 4 to 14 years living in the city of São Paulo, according to clinical, demographic, epidemiological, and social variables, during the school closure period as a measure against covid-19 spread. METHODS A serological survey was made in September 2020 with a random sample stratified by school system (municipal public, state public and private) type. A venous blood sample was collected using the Wondfo SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Test (lateral flow method) for detection of total SARS-CoV-2 virus antibodies. Semi-structured questionnaires were applied to collect clinical, demographic, social, and epidemiological data. RESULTS Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in schoolchildren was of 16.6% (95%CI 15.4–17.8). The study found higher seroprevalence in the municipal (18.5%; 95%CI 16.6–20.6) and state (16.2%; 95%CI 14.4–18.2) public school systems compared to the private school system (11.7; 95%CI 10.0–13.7), among black and brown students (18.4%; 95%CI 16.8–20.2) and in the most vulnerable social stratum (18.5 %;95%CI 16.9–20.2). Lower seroprevalence was identified in schoolchildren who reported following the recommended protective measures against covid-19. CONCLUSION Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies is found mainly in the most socially vulnerable schoolchildren. This study can contribute to support public policies that reinforce the importance of suspending face-to-face classes and developing strategies aimed at protective measures and monitoring of the serological status of those who have not yet been included in the vaccination schedule.

ABSTRACT Climatic factors can decisively influence the growth and productivity of agricultural crops. For unconventional vegetables, such as the Amazon chicory, the influence of sunlight on growing cycle is unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of shading levels on the productive performance of Amazon chicory. The authors used a randomized block design, with four treatments and five replicates. The treatments were black polypropylene screens, 30, 50 and 70% shading, and cultivation at full sunlight. Vegetative development and production traits were evaluated. Correlation and principal components analysis (PCA) were performed with the aid of the computer program R. No significant difference between the shading levels for the evaluated traits was noticed. Nevertheless, the cultivation at full sunlight allowed an increase in production, compared to the 70% shading screen. A strong positive correlation between productivity, leaf fresh mass and amount of water in the shoot area was verified, with a coefficient equal to 1. Only the leaf area characteristic was poorly correlated with other traits (angle >90º). Therefore, we suggest growing the Amazon chicory both at full sunlight and under 70% shading.

RESUMO Fatores climáticos podem influenciar de modo decisivo no crescimento e produtividade de culturas agrícolas. Para hortaliças não convencionais, como a chicória da Amazônia, é desconhecido a influência da luz solar em seu ciclo de cultivo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência de níveis de sombreamento no desempenho produtivo de chicória da Amazônia. Para isso, adotou-se o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com quatro tratamentos e cinco repetições. Os tratamentos foram telas de polipropileno preta, com 30, 50 e 70% de sombreamento e cultivo a pleno sol. Avaliou-se características de desenvolvimento vegetativo e de produção. Realizou-se a análise de correlação e de componentes principais (PCA), no programa computacional R. Não houve diferença significativa entre os níveis de sombreamento para as características avaliadas. Apesar disso, o cultivo a pleno sol possibilitou incremento na produção, em comparação à tela de 70% de sombreamento. Houve forte correlação positiva entre a produtividade, massa fresca das folhas e quantidade de água da parte aérea, com coeficiente igual a 1. Apenas as características de área foliar foram pouco correlacionadas com as demais (ângulo >90º). Logo, pode ser indicado que a chicória da Amazônia seja cultivada tanto a pleno sol como em 70% de sombreamento.

Abstract The use of climate models with emphasis on precipitation simulation is strategic for climate and water resources studies. The objective of this work was to evaluate the precipitation simulated by the RegCM regional climate model in the São Francisco River basin, according to the cumulus parameterization and the domain. Our evaluation, using several statistical indices and their combination, show that RegCM showed greater performance in simulating precipitation patterns when Emanuel or Tiedke parameterization was prescribed (activated). The other parameterizations evaluated, Kain-Fritsch and Grell, underestimated precipitation considerably. Emanuel stood out for the better representation of the temporal variability of precipitation, while Tiedke presented a higher correlation and lower mean errors. The Low São Francisco was the region in which RegCM showed the lower skill in simulating precipitation from May to July (rainy season), indicating the difficulty of the model in representing the moisture transport from the ocean to the continent and the occurrence of Easterly Waves disturbances. Finally, the model prescribed with a larger domain simulated better the precipitation patterns probably because it contemplates the region where the meteorological systems of larger scales act in the basin.

Resumo O uso de modelos climáticos com ênfase na simulação de precipitação é estratégico para estudos climáticos e de recursos hídricos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a precipitação simulada pelo modelo regional climático RegCM na bacia hidrográfica do Rio São Francisco, conforme a parametrização de cúmulos e o domínio. Nossa avaliação, com uso de diversos índices estatísticos e a combinação desses, mostram que o RegCM apresentou maior destreza em simular os padrões de precipitação quando neste foi prescrito (acionado) nele a parametrização de Emanuel ou de Tiedke. As outras parametrizações avaliadas, Kain-Fritsch e a de Grell, subestimaram consideravelmente a precipitação. Emanuel se destacou pela melhor representação da variabilidade temporal da precipitação, enquanto Tiedke apresentou maior correlação e menores erros médios. O baixo São Francisco foi a região em que o RegCM apresentou a menor destreza em simular a precipitação durante maio a julho (período chuvoso), indicando a dificuldade do modelo em representar o transporte de umidade do oceano para o continente e a ocorrência dos distúrbios ondulatórios de leste. Por fim, o modelo prescrito com um domínio maior simulou melhor os padrões de precipitação provavelmente por contemplar a região de atuação dos sistemas meteorológicos de escalas maiores atuantes na bacia.

Abstract The diagnosis of irreversible pulpitis (IP) depends on clinical data, especially the chief complaint of the patient, visual inspection, response to the application of stimuli, and radiographic examination. The characterization of nerve fibers (NF) in IP may contribute to better interpret painful symptoms, but has been barely explored. This study sought to characterize the density and integrity of NF in 16 samples of IP and in five healthy pulps (HP) using S-100 and PGP 9.5 markers. Immunohistochemistry was performed to determine the density/mm2 of S-100+ and PGP 9.5+ in NF. The amount of degenerated NF was obtained by subtracting the total NF density from the amount of intact NF. Associations between NF density and integrity and symptomatology were calculated. All samples were positive for S-100 and PGP 9.5. Compared to HP samples (38.20/mm2), IP samples had a lower density of intact NF (6.24/mm2). A significantly higher density of degenerated NF was found in IP samples with spontaneous pain (39.59/mm2) compared to those with provoked pain (23.96/mm2) (p = 0.02). No association was observed between intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate and NF density and integrity (p > 0.05). The findings of this study suggest that pulpitis may involve different stages of degeneration and may be more advanced in cases with spontaneous pain. The symptoms reported by affected individuals do not appear to depend on the intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate, but rather on the integrity of NF.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

ABSTRACT Entomopathogenic fungi stand out in the biological control of several agriculturally important insects. Six isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae, Cordyceps javanica, Beauveria sp. and B. bassiana were screened to control Anthonomus grandis, Euschistus heros, Oebalus poecilus, O. ypsilongriseus and Thyanta perditor, important insect pests of soybean, cotton and rice. The bioassays were conducted in a completely randomized design, with four replications (10 insects/replication). Significant differences for virulence were observed between the tested fungal species and isolates. For A. grandis, the most virulent isolate was M. anisopliae BRM 2335, followed by Beauveria BRM 14527 and BRM 67744 [82.5 to 97.5 % of mortality; average lethal time (LT50) of 5.9 to 7.8 days]. M. anisopliae BRM 2335 was also highly virulent to the four stink bug species (75 to 97.5 % of mortality; LT50 of 5.2 to 9.7 days). For the stink bugs, Beauveria sp. BRM 67744 was infectious to O. poecilus (75 % of mortality), but failed to control E. heros (16.9 % of mortality). C. javanica BRM 27666 and BRM 14526 showed average virulence to the stink bugs and A. grandis (17.5 to 57.3 % of mortality; LT50 of 6.0 to 9.7 days). M. anisopliae was consistently more virulent to the stink bugs than the other fungi. Therefore, M. anisopliae BRM 2335 was selected for further studies under screenhouse and field conditions to control A. grandis and other stink bug species, especially E. heros.

RESUMO Os fungos entomopatogênicos destacam-se no controle biológico de diversos insetos de importância agrícola. Seis isolados de Metarhizium anisopliae, Cordyceps javanica, Beauveria sp. e B. bassiana foram selecionados para o controle de Anthonomus grandis, Euschistus heros, Oebalus poecilus, O. ypsilongriseus e Thyanta perditor, importantes insetos-pragas da soja, algodão e arroz. Os bioensaios foram conduzidos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições (10 insetos/repetição). Foram observadas diferenças significativas, em termos de virulência, entre as espécies fúngicas e isolados testados. Para A. grandis, M. anisopliae BRM 2335 foi o isolado mais virulento, seguido por Beauveria BRM 14527 e BRM 67744 [82,5 a 97,5 % de mortalidade; tempo letal médio (TL50) de 5,9 a 7,8 dias]. M. anisopliae BRM 2335 também foi altamente virulento para as quatro espécies de percevejo (75 a 97,5 % de mortalidade; TL50 de 5,2 a 9,7 dias). Para os percevejos, Beauveria sp. BRM 67744 foi infeccioso para O. poecilus (75 % de mortalidade), mas falhou no controle de E. heros (16,9 % de mortalidade). C. javanica BRM 27666 e BRM 14526 apresentaram virulência mediana para os percevejos e A. grandis (17,5 a 57,3 % de mortalidade; TL50 de 6,0 a 9,7 dias). M. anisopliae foi consistentemente mais virulento aos percevejos do que os outros fungos. Portanto, M. anisopliae BRM 2335 foi selecionado para estudos posteriores em casa telada e campo para o controle de A. grandis e outras espécies de percevejo, principalmente E. heros.

Abstract Introduction: Respiratory diseases are a major cause of morbidity in the pediatric population. Nebulizers, for years the most suitable devices for administering aerosol therapy in children, have been superseded by simple inhalation devices. Current clinical guidelines restrict the prescription and use of nebulizers. The study aims to investigate the reality of domiciliary use of nebulizing systems in the pediatric age in the São Miguel Island Health Unit. Methods: Observational, analytical, and cross-sectional study. Inclusion criteria: children from zero to seven years and 365 days of age. A face-to-face survey was performed on caregivers of the target population to assess the context of the acquisition, use, and maintenance of nebulizers. A significant sample of 380 users was calculated (95% confidence interval). Results: Participation of 387 caregivers. The average age of children included 2.5 years. 45,7% of participants had a nebulizer and 18,9% reported having a simple inhaler device. The rate of acquisition and use of nebulizers without medical prescription was 67.8% and 79.7%, respectively. The cost of acquiring the nebulization system was between 80 and 150 euros for 38.4% of the participants. Most of the unsupervised use occurred with saline and in the context of nasal obstruction (41.1%) and cough (24.9%). Discussion: The present study reveals an excessive, unsupervised and inappropriate use of nebulizers in pediatric age. The present investigation should encourage the promotion of the use of simple inhaler devices, by educating users, caregivers, and health professionals, aiming to improve local health practice.

Resumo Introdução: As doenças respiratórias são uma causa major de morbilidade em idade pediátrica. Os sistemas de nebulização, durante anos os dispositivos mais indicados para administração de aerossolterapia em crianças, foram suplantados pelos dispositivos simples de inalação. As linhas de orientação clínica atuais restringem a prescrição e utilização de nebulizadores. O objetivo do estudo é investigar a utilização domiciliária de sistemas de nebulização em idade pediátrica na Unidade de Saúde da Ilha de São Miguel. Método: Estudo observacional, transversal e analítico. Inclusão de crianças dos zero aos sete anos e 365 dias de idade, inscritos na Unidade de Saúde da Ilha de São Miguel. Aplicação de inquérito sob a forma de questionário aos acompanhantes da população-alvo para avaliação do contexto de aquisição, utilização e manutenção dos sistemas de nebulização. Calculada uma amostra significativa de 380 utentes (intervalo de confiança de 95%). Resultados: Participação de 387 utentes. Média de idades de 2,5 anos. 45,7% dos inquiridos afirmou possuir um nebulizador, enquanto 18,9% referiu possuir um dispositivo de inalação simples. A taxa de aquisição e utilização dos sistemas de nebulização sem prescrição médica foi de 67,8% e 79,7%, respetivamente. O custo da aquisição do sistema de nebulização foi entre 80 e 150 euros em 38,4%. A maioria da utilização não supervisionada ocorreu com soro fisiológico e no contexto de obstrução nasal (41,1%) e tosse (24,9%). Conclusão: O presente estudo evidencia a aquisição e utilização excessiva, não supervisionada e inapropriada dos sistemas de nebulização. A presente investigação deverá motivar a promoção da utilização dos dispositivos simples através da educação dos utentes, cuidadores e profissionais de saúde, visando melhorar a prática de saúde local.

RESUMO: O objetivo foi avaliar os efeitos das doses anuais de 100 e 200 kg ha-1 de nitrogênio (N) sobre as características morfogênicas e estruturais do capim-ipyporã, em lotação intermitente durante as estações do ano. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, com dois tratamentos e três repetições de área. Os pastos de capim-ipyporã foram submetidos ao pastejo por bovinos de corte. Foram avaliadas as características morfogênicas e estruturais do dossel forrageiro por meio da técnica de perfilhos marcados. Também foi avaliado o acúmulo de forragem e a densidade populacional de perfilhos (DPP). Foi observada interação significativa (P < 0,05) das doses de N e estações do ano para o período de descanso (PD), duração de vida das folhas (DVF), filocrono, taxa de alongamento de colmos (TAlC) e comprimento final das folhas (CFF). Durante o inverno, o PD foi menor (40 vs 50 dias) nos pastos adubados com 200 kg ha-1 de N. Em contra partida, no inverno, os pastos adubados com 100 kg ha-1 de N apresentaram maiores valores para DVF, filocrono e TAlC, e menores para o CFF. Não foi observado efeito isolado de doses de N (P > 0,05) para as taxas de acúmulo de forragem; de aparecimento, alongamento e de senescência de folhas, relação folha:colmo e para a DPP. No entanto, o efeito das estações foi significativo para estas variáveis, com os maiores valores observados durante a primavera e verão. O uso de 200 kg ha-1 de N para pastos de capim-ipyporã promove redução da estacionalidade de produção da forrageira.

ABSTRACT: This study examined the effects of annual nitrogen (N) rates of 100 and 200 kg ha-1 on the morphogenetic and structural traits of Ipyporã grass (Brachiaria brizantha × Brachiaria ruziziensis) under intermittent grazing during the seasons of the year. The experiment was laid out in a randomized-block design with two treatments and three area replicates. Ipyporã grass pastures were grazed by beef cattle. Morphogenetic and structural traits of the forage canopy were evaluated using the marked-tiller technique. Forage accumulation and tiller density (TD) were also evaluated. Significant interaction effects (P < 0.05) between N rates and seasons were observed for the rest period, leaf lifespan (LLS), phyllochron, stem elongation rate (SER) and final leaf length (FLL). During winter, the rest period was shorter (40 vs. 50 days) in the pastures fertilized with 200 kg ha-1 N. Conversely, in winter, the pastures fertilized with 100 kg ha-1 N showed higher LLS, SER and phyllochron values, but lower FLL values. There was no isolated effect of N rates (P > 0.05) on forage accumulation rate; leaf appearance, elongation or senescence rates; leaf:stem ratio; or TD. However, the effect of seasons was significant for these variables, with the highest values occurring during spring and summer. The use of 200 kg ha-1 N in Ipyporã grass pastures reduces the seasonality of forage production.

ABSTRACT Ischemia-reperfusion injury is a pathophysiological event occuring after abdominal organ transplantation, and has a significant influence on prognosis and survival of the graft. It is involved in delaying the primary function or non-functioning of the graft. The objective of this study was to provide information on heat shock protein mechanisms in ischemia-reperfusion injuries in abdominal organ transplantations, and to indicate the possible factors involved that may influence the graft outcome. Several classes of heat shock proteins are part of the ischemia and reperfusion process, both as inflammatory agonists and in protecting the process. Studies involving heat shock proteins enhance knowledge on ischemia-reperfusion injury mitigation processes and the mechanisms involved in the survival of abdominal grafts, and open space to support therapeutic future clinical studies, minimizing ischemia and reperfusion injuries in abdominal organ transplantations. Expression of heat shock proteins is associated with inflammatory manifestations and ischemia-reperfusion injuries in abdominal organ transplantations and may influence graft outcomes.

Abstract The present study investigated by palynological and chemical analysis (Flame Atomic Absortion Spectrometry) about the botanical origin and the heavy metals content (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead and mercury) of monthly honey samples of Apis mellifera L. over two years. The pollen types Apiaceae, Mimosa caesalpiniifolia, M. tenuiflora and Myrcia indicated the main floristic sources used by bees. M. tenuiflora was the most frequent of the pollen types, and because it predominates in different months in each year, which may indicate more than one species of the genus being foraged by the beehive. The climatic influence (rainfall and temperature) on the pollen diversity was investigated and was not statistically supported. The chemical analysis showed that the heavy metal content of the samples were below their respective limits of quantification, and, therefore, the samples can be considered safe for human consumption.

Resumo O Núcleo Ampliado de Saúde da Família e Atenção Básica foi criado no Brasil para apoiar e ampliar a atenção e a gestão na Saúde da Família. Analisa-se a sua atuação quanto à saúde do trabalhador e saúde e ambiente em territórios do campo e das águas com as famílias que vivem da pesca artesanal e da agricultura camponesa. Pesquisa qualitativa que se ancorou em referenciais da Sociologia das Ausências e da Saúde Coletiva, na abordagem particular que esta faz das relações entre saúde, ambiente e trabalho. A pesquisa valeu-se do emprego de grupos focais na produção de narrativas de profissionais do Núcleo Ampliado de Saúde da Família e Atenção Básica em municípios do semiárido e do litoral do Nordeste. Evidenciaram-se singularidades socioeconômicas e culturais das populações do campo e das águas; invisibilidades e potencialidades sobre seus modos de vida e trabalho; cargas e doenças relacionadas ao trabalho; e aspectos da atuação do Núcleo Ampliado de Saúde da Família e Atenção Básica mediante interações com o trabalho e o ambiente nesses territórios. Os cuidados oferecidos a estas populações consideram parcialmente suas especificidades socioculturais, produtivas, ambientais e de saúde, sendo preciso ampliar o reconhecimento de seus modos de vida e trabalho visando intervenções mais exitosas sobre os problemas e necessidades de saúde - o que aponta desafios à formação em saúde para o Sistema Único de Saúde.

Abstract The Extended Family Health and Primary Care Center (Núcleo Ampliado de Saúde da Família e Atenção Básica - NASF-AB) was created in Brazil to support and expand Family Health care and management. Its performance regarding workers’ health and health and environment in rural and water territories is analyzed with families that live from artisanal fishing and peasant agriculture. This is a qualitative research that was anchored in references from the Sociology of Absences and Collective Health, in the latter’s particular approach to the relations between health, environment, and work. The research used focus groups to produce narratives of professionals from the Extended Center for Family Health and Primary Care in municipalities in the semiarid and coastal regions of the Northeast. The socioeconomic and cultural singularities of the rural and water populations were evidenced; invisibilities and potentialities about their ways of life and work; work-related burdens and diseases; and aspects of the performance of the Extended Family Health Center and Primary Care through interactions with work and the environment in these territories. The care offered to these populations partially considers their sociocultural, productive, environmental, and health specificities, and it is necessary to expand the recognition of their ways of life and work, aiming at more successful interventions on health problems and needs; which poses challenges to health education for the Unified Health System.

Resumen El Núcleo Ampliado de Salud de la Familia y Atención Básica fue creado en Brasil para apoyar y ampliar la atención y gestión en Salud de la Familia. Se analiza su desempeño en materia de salud de los trabajadores y salud y medio ambiente en territorios del campo y de las aguas con las familias que viven de la pesca artesanal y de la agricultura campesina. Investigación cualitativa que se basó en referentes de la Sociología de las Ausencias y de la Salud Colectiva, en el particular abordaje que esta hace de la relación entre salud, medio ambiente y trabajo. La investigación se basó en la utilización de grupos focales en la producción de narrativas por parte de profesionales del Núcleo Ampliado de Salud de la Familia y Atención Básica en municipios de la región semiárida y del litoral del Nordeste. Se evidenciaron singularidades socioeconómicas y culturales de las poblaciones del campo y de las aguas; invisibilidades y potencialidades sobre sus formas de vida y trabajo; cargas y enfermedades relacionadas con el trabajo; y aspectos de la actuación del Núcleo Ampliado de Salud de la Familia y Atención Primaria a través de interacciones con el trabajo y el medio ambiente en estos territorios. La atención ofrecida a estas poblaciones considera parcialmente sus especificidades socioculturales, productivas, ambientales y de salud, siendo necesario ampliar el reconocimiento de sus modos de vida y de trabajo, visando intervenciones más exitosas sobre los problemas y necesidades de salud; lo que apunta desafíos a la formación en salud para el Sistema Único de Salud.

Abstract Purpose To assess the knowledge of students from public high schools in poor communities about HPV and Sexually Transmitted Infections and their attitude towards and prevention of such diseases. Patients and methods Cross-sectional study with adolescents from public schools of São Paulo - Brazil. Participants were selected for an interview by a randomization program. A questionnaire about knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices regarding STIs, including HPV, according to sex was administered and answers were analyzed by the Poisson regression model with robust variance. Results Median age of the 269 participants was 16 years. The majority was of African descent (68.8%, n = 185), most (74%, n = 199) were religious and the vast majority (90.7%, n = 244) lived with their parents. The Poisson regression revealed statistically significant sex-related differences regarding the following questions: “Do you know how it is prevented?” (PR = 1.12 [1.03‒1.23], p = 0.007); “Have you ever been concerned with HPV?” (PR = 1.10 [1.02‒1.19], p = 0.011); “Have you ever sought health care due to concerns about HPV?” (PR = 1.09 [1.04‒1.14], p < 0.001); “Do you know what a Pap Smear is?” (PR = 1.24 [1.13‒1.36], p < 0.001); “Do you know what the cervix is?” (PR = 1.23 [1.13‒1.34], p < 0.001); “Do you know what cervical cancer is?” (PR = 1.13 [1.04‒1.22], p = 0.004). Conclusions The present results show that adolescents from public schools in poor communities in São Paulo City know little about HPV and cervical cancer. Male adolescents know less than female adolescents and are less concerned with health care.
