Abstract In Argentina, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) caused by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC-HUS) infection is endemic, and reliable data about prevalence and risk factors have been available since 2000. However, information about STEC-associated bloody diarrhea (BD) is limited. A prospective study was performed during the period October Surveillance; 2018-June 2019 in seven tertiary-hospitals and 18 referral units from different regions, aiming of STEC-HUS cases in the same hospitals and during the same period were also assessed. Twenty-nine (4.1%) of the BD patients were STEC-positive, as determined by the Shiga Toxin Quik Chek (STQC) test and/or the multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR) assay. The highest fre-quencies were found in the Southern region (Neuquén, 8.7%; Bahía Blanca, 7.9%), in children between 12 and 23 month of age (8.8%), during summertime. Four (13.8%) cases progressed to HUS, three to nine days after diarrhea onset. Twenty-seven STEC-HUS in children under 5 years of age (77.8%) were enrolled, 51.9% were female; 44% were Stx-positive by STQC and all by mPCR. The most common serotypes were O157:H7 and O145:H28 and the prevalent geno-types, both among BD and HUS cases, were sfx2a-only or -associated. Considering the endemic behavior of HUS and its high incidence, these data show that the rate of STEC-positive cases is low among BD patients. However, the early recognition of STEC-positive cases is important for patient monitoring and initiation of supportive treatment.

Resumen En Argentina, el síndrome urémico hemolítico asociado a Escherichia coli productor de toxina Shiga (STEC-SUH) es endémico y, desde 2000, de notificación obligatoria. Sin embargo, la información sobre diarrea sanguinolenta (DS) asociada a STEC (DS-STEC) es limitada. Se realizó un estudio prospectivo desde octubre de 2018 hasta junio de 2019 en siete hospitales de tercer nivel y 18 unidades de referencia de diferentes provincias argentinas, con el objetivo de determinar la frecuencia de casos de DS-STEC en 714 niños de 1 a 9 años que tuvieron DS (I) y la tasa de progresión de DS a SUH en dicha cohorte (II). También se evaluó el número y distribución regional de casos de STEC-SUH en los mismos hospitales en dicho período. Veintinueve casos de DS (4,1%) fueron STEC-positivos, determinados por Shiga Toxin Quik Chek (STQC) o PCR múltiple (mPCR). Las frecuencias más altas se encontraron en el sur del área relevada (Neuquén, 8,7%; Bahía Blanca, 7,9%), en niños de 12 a 23 meses (8,8%), en verano. Cuatro casos de DS-STEC (13,8%) progresaron a SUH, de tres a nueve días después del inicio de la diarrea. Se registraron 27 niños con STEC-SUH, estos fueron mayoritariamente <5 anos (77,8%) del sexo femenino (51,9%). El 44% de estos casos fueron Stx-positivos por STQC y todos por mPCR. Los serotipos más comunes fueron O157:H7y O145:H28, y el genotipo predominante fue stx2a, solo o asociado, en DS y SUH. Considerando el comportamiento endémico del SUH y su alta incidencia, estos datos muestran que la tasa de casos de DS-STEC es baja. Sin embargo, su reconocimiento temprano es importante para el seguimiento e inicio del tratamiento de sostén.

ABSTRACT Technologies once applied exclusively in conventional systems have maximized gains in hydroponic systems; however, they still need information for proper use. Thus, the study aimed to evaluate the effect of foliar application of thiamine and niacin on growth and gas exchange activities in two lettuce cultivars in an ebb and flow hydroponic system. The completely randomized design (CRD) was used with four treatments and eight replications. The treatments were as follows: T1 - control, T2 - thiamine at a concentration of 200 mg L-1, T3 - niacin at 200 mg L-1, and T4 - thiamine and niacin combined at 100 mg L-1 of each vitamin. Each experimental plot consisted of a lettuce plant. The combined application of thiamine and niacin stood out, increasing the activity of gas exchange of lettuce plants and increasing by about 30% the fresh mass, concerning the control, for both cultivars, followed by the isolated application of niacin. For thiamine, the application alone did not result in significant changes. The vitamins affect the morphophysiology of lettuce, where the use of niacin has the potential for use in hydroponic production systems. Its combined use with thiamine increases this potential, with a synergistic effect between the compounds being verified.

RESUMO Tecnologias outrora aplicadas exclusivamente em sistemas convencionais, têm maximizado os ganhos em sistemas hidropônicos, porém, necessitando ainda de informações para uma adequada utilização. Assim, o estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da aplicação foliar de tiamina e niacina sobre o crescimento e atividades de troca gasosa em duas cultivares de alface em sistema hidropônico de fluxo e refluxo. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado (DIC), com quatro tratamentos e oito repetições. Os tratamentos foram: T1 - controle; T2 - tiamina em concentração de 200 mg L-1; T3 - niacina em concentração de 200 mg L-1; T4 - tiamina e niacina combinadas, em concentração de 100 mg L-1 de cada vitamina. Cada parcela experimental foi constituída por um vaso, contendo uma muda de alface. A aplicação conjunta de tiamina e niacina elevou as trocas gasosas das plantas de alface, aumentando em cerca de 30% a massa fresca, em relação ao controle, para ambas as cultivares, seguida pela aplicação isolada de niacina. Para a tiamina, a aplicação de forma isolada não resultou em alterações significativas. As vitaminas afetam a morfofisiologia da alface, onde o uso da niacina tem potencial para uso em sistemas de produção hidropônicos, sendo esse potencial aumentado pelo seu uso conjunto com a tiamina, verificando-se um efeito sinérgico entre os compostos.

ABSTRACT In the Brazilian Cerrado, phytonematodes, phytonematodes are a challenge for agriculture, and the association of forms of control is the best strategy to be used in coexistence with this pathogen. Faced with this problem, this study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of cover crops and biocontrol agents in the management of nematodes in soybean. For each nematode species under study (Meloidogyne incognita and Pratylenchus brachyurus), two experiments were carried out under greenhouse conditions in a completely randomized design arranged in a 6 × 2 factorial scheme with eight replications. Six cover crops (millet ADRG 9050, millet ADR 300, Urochloa ruziziensis, Crotalaria ochroleuca, C. spectabilis, and corn hybrid DKB 290) and two treatments (treated or not with Bacillus subtilis and B. methylotrophicus - 1×106 CFU per seed) were evaluated. The cover crops were sown in soil infested with nematodes and then soybeans were sown under the straw, and cultivated for 45 and 60 days, for M. incognita and P. brachyurus, respectively. Fresh root mass, total nematode population, and the number of nematodes per gram of root were evaluated. The association of microorganisms with C. spectabilis, U. ruziziensis, and millet ADR 300 conferred an additional effect in reducing the population of P. brachyurus. For M. incognita, the association was successful only for combining C. spectabilis with B. methylotrophicus. DKB 290 corn, when treated with B. methylotrophicus, had the nematode population per gram of soybean root reduced by 90% compared to plants that did not receive biological treatment.

RESUMO No Cerrado brasileiro, os fitonematoides são um desafio para agricultura, sendo a associação de formas de controle a melhor estratégia a ser utilizada na convivência com esse patógeno. Diante dessa problemática, o objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência de plantas de cobertura e agentes de biocontrole no manejo de nematoides na cultura da soja. Foram desenvolvidos dois ensaios em condições de casa de vegetação para os nematoides Meloidogyne incognita e Pratylenchus brachyurus, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 6 (plantas de cobertura: milheto ADRG 9050, milheto ADR 300, Urochloa ruziziensis, Crotalaria ochroleuca, C. spectabilis e milho DKB 290) × 2 (tratados ou não com Bacillus subtilis e B. methylotrophicus - 1×106 UFC por semente), com oito repetições. As plantas de cobertura foram semeadas em solo infestado com nematoides e na sequência semeada soja sob a palha, e cultivada por 45 e 60 dias, para M. incognita e P. brachyurus, respectivamente. Foram avaliadas a massa fresca de raízes e o número de nematoides totais e por grama de raiz. A associação dos microrganismos com C. spectabilis, U. ruziziensis e milheto ADR 300 conferiram efeito adicional na redução da população de P. brachyurus. Para a espécie M. incognita a associação foi bem sucedida apenas para a combinação da C. spectabilis com B. methylotrophicus. O milho DKB 290, quando tratado com B. methylotrophicus, teve a população do nematoide por grama de raiz da soja reduzida em 90 % em comparação às plantas que não receberam o tratamento biológico.

As campanhas de vacinação desempenharam um papel crucial na redução da incidência da COVID-19. No entanto, um número escasso de estudos avaliou o impacto da vacinação nas taxas de letalidade, inclusive no Brasil. Este estudo teve como objetivo comparar as taxas de letalidade de acordo com a situação vacinal dos residentes do Município de Arapongas (Paraná, Brasil), considerando a composição etária da população. Várias estratégias adotadas pela Prefeitura Municipal para minimizar a propagação do vírus também foram elaboradas. Acessou-se a base de dados de 2021 da Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de Arapongas, onde foram notificados 16.437 casos confirmados e 425 óbitos. A taxa de letalidade foi calculada como a razão entre as mortes por COVID-19 e o número de casos confirmados. Este estudo inédito observou diferenças na composição etária entre indivíduos não vacinados e totalmente vacinados. Considerando que a taxa de letalidade é um indicador bruto e altamente sensível à composição etária da população, adotou-se a distribuição etária média dos casos confirmados entre os três níveis vacinais (não vacinados, parcialmente vacinados e completamente vacinados) como distribuição etária padrão. A taxa de letalidade padronizada por idade para os não vacinados e completamente vacinados foi de 4,55% e 2,42%, respectivamente. Indivíduos completamente vacinados apresentaram menores taxas de letalidade específicas por idade em todas as faixas etárias acima de 60 anos em comparação às populações não vacinadas. Estes achados fortalecem o papel da vacinação como uma medida essencial para a prevenção de mortes entre pessoas infectadas e é de particular importância para a reavaliação contínua das intervenções e políticas de saúde pública.

Las campañas de vacunación juegan un papel clave en la reducción de la propagación del COVID-19. Sin embargo, pocos estudios evalúan el impacto de la vacunación en las tasas de letalidad, incluso en Brasil. Este estudio tuvo por objetivo comparar las tasas de letalidad según el estado de vacunación de los residentes de Arapongas (Paraná, Brasil) a partir de la composición por grupo de edad de la población. El Ayuntamiento Municipal aplicó varias estrategias para mitigar la propagación del virus. Se accedió a la base de datos de 2021 del Departamento de Salud de Arapongas, donde se reportaron 16.437 casos confirmados y 425 defunciones. Se calculó la tasa de letalidad como la relación entre las muertes por COVID-19 y el número de casos confirmados. Este estudio inédito evaluó las diferencias en la composición por grupo de edad entre individuos no vacunados y los individuos totalmente vacunados. Teniendo en cuenta que tasa de letalidad es un indicador bruto y muy sensible a la composición por grupo de edad de la población, se adoptó la distribución estándar por grupo de edad de los casos confirmados entre los tres niveles de vacunación (no vacunados, parcialmente vacunados y totalmente vacunados). La tasa de letalidad estandarizada por edad para los no vacunados y los totalmente vacunados fue del 4,55% y del 2,42%, respectivamente. Los individuos totalmente vacunados tenían más baja tasa de letalidad por grupo de edad en todos los grupos de edad superiores a los 60 años en comparación con las poblaciones no vacunadas. Estos hallazgos confirman el papel de la vacunación como una medida esencial de prevención de muertes entre los infectados y es importante para la reevaluación en curso de las intervenciones y políticas de salud pública.

Vaccination campaigns played a crucial role in reducing the incidence of COVID-19. However, a scant number of studies evaluated the impact of vaccination on case fatality rates (CFRs), including in Brazil. Our study aimed to compare CFRs according to vaccination status among subjects living in Arapongas (Paraná State, Brazil), considering the age composition of the population. Several strategies adopted by the Arapongas City Hall to minimize the spread of the virus were also elaborated upon. We accessed the 2021 database of the Arapongas Municipal Health Department, in which a total of 16,437 confirmed cases and 425 deaths were reported. The CFR was calculated as the ratio between COVID-19 deaths and the number of confirmed cases. Differences in age composition between unvaccinated and fully vaccinated individuals were observed in our study. Considering that CFR is a crude indicator and is highly sensitive to the age composition of the population, we adopted the average age distribution of confirmed cases among the three vaccination statuses (unvaccinated, partially, and fully) as a standard age distribution. The age-standardized CFR for unvaccinated and fully vaccinated groups were 4.55% and 2.42%, respectively. Fully vaccinated individuals showed lower age-specific CFRs in all age groups above 60 years than unvaccinated populations. Our findings strengthen the role of vaccination as a critical measure for preventing deaths among infected people and is particularly important to the ongoing reassessment of public health interventions and policies.

Abstract The Santos Basin (SB) is the main petroliferous basin in the Brazilian continental margin and one of the most studied marine areas in Brazil. However, historical data suggest that new efforts should be carried out to acquire quantitative biological data, especially in the deep sea, to establish the baseline of essential ocean variables in different ecosystems for future monitoring programs. The Brazilian energy company Petrobras planned and executed 24 oceanographic cruises over a period of 2 years to assess the benthic (SANSED cruise) and pelagic (SANAGU cruise) systems of the SB (356 days at sea in 2019 and 2021/2022). These efforts were part of the Santos Project, which comprised a comprehensive environmental study aimed at investigating benthic and pelagic variables to characterize ecology, biogeochemistry, thermohaline properties of water masses, and ocean circulation patterns, geomorphology, and sedimentology, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Here we present the detailed sampling designs and the field methods employed on board, during the SB scientific cruises. All sampling protocols were based on standardized approaches. For the benthos analyses, triplicate sediment samples were performed using a GOMEX-type box corer (0.25 m²) or a large modified Van Veen grab (0.75 m²) at 100 stations ranging from 25 to 2400 m depth. At each station, 25 geochemical and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed in addition to micro-, meio-, and macrofauna and living foraminifera samples. For the pelagic system, 60 stations were selected to investigate the plankton community, ranging in size from pico- to macroplankton, through vertical, horizontal, and oblique net hauls (20, 200, and 500 μm mesh size), as well as 25 biogeochemical parameters collected with an aid of a CTD-rosette sampler. Part of this scientific information also serves the Regional Environmental Characterization Project (PCR-BS) in support of Petrobras’ Santos Basin drilling licensing process led by the Brazilian Environmental Agency – IBAMA. This project contributes to the sustainable development of the SB, in line with the guidelines of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

The antifungal potential of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by actinobacterial strains Streptomyces sp. (ACTB-77) and Amycolatopsis sp. (ACTB-290) from the rhizosphere of Caatinga plants against Colletotrichum musae was investigated. VOCs produced by these microorganisms (axenic and co-culture) were investigated using headspace-solid phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Although no exclusive VOC peaks were observed in the co-culture with ACTB-77, the same experiment involving ACTB-290 yielded five new peaks, including two identified alcohols, suggested as bioreductive products of the corresponding ketones by the fungus. Statistical analysis revealed that co-culture ACTB-77/C. musae has a closer similarity to the fungus than to the actinobacteria, while the co culture ACTB-290/C. musae showed closer similarity to the actinobacteria. These confirmed the more pronounced antifungal activity of the ACTB-290 strain, as observed in the fungus growth inhibition experiments. The antifungal activity of ACTB-290 was associated to its sulfur-containing metabolites, while linalool was suggested as responsible for the ACTB-77 activity.

Bio-based linear low-density polyethylene (green LLDPE) composites are used as electrical jackets/insulator for cables. Assessments of gamma-irradiation (Co-60) effects on these materials are of interest as they might be used in nuclear power plants (NPPs). Brazilian sugarcane juice-based green LLDPE composite electrical jackets were irradiated until 1000 kGy and analyzed for thermal stability and mechanical characteristics. Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) showed increasing of pyrolysis activation energy (Ea) (under N2) from 42.7 ± 4.2 kJ/mol in unirradiated samples to 72.8 ± 4.6 kJ/mol after 60 kGy dose, as resulted of radiation-induced effects. FTIR spectra evidenced radiation-induced formation of conjugated C=C bonds after 250 kGy dose. Tensile stress and Young modulus did not change significantly until 150 kGy dose, whereas elongation at break decreased and reached 50% at 91 kGy dose. These results suggest that green LLDPE might withstand radiation damage through a NPP operating life (~ 40 years).

Abstract Inflammatory bowel diseases are a group of inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. Their prevalence is still low in Brazil, but the incidence is increasing annually. A variety of compounds present in Curcuma longa L., particularly curcumin, have been shown to reduce oxidative stress and aid in the prevention of associated diseases. This study aimed to assess the effect of curcumin transdermal gel on oxidative stress and intestinal inflammation in IL-10 knockout mice. Female mice were divided into four groups: a control group (C0) treated with vehicle and three experimental groups treated with transdermal gel containing 50 (C50), 75 (C75), and 100 (C100) mg curcumin kg−1 body weight. Colon malondialdehyde concentrations were lower in C50 and C75 groups. C100 treatment led to reduced catalase activity in the small intestine, whereas C50, C75, and C100 treatments resulted in decreased catalase activity in the colon. In contrast, superoxide dismutase activity increased in the small intestine of C50 and C75 mice and decreased in the colon of C50, C75, and C100 mice. Glutathione S-transferase activity increased in the small intestine and decreased in the colon of C75 animals. These findings suggest that curcumin transdermal gel exerts a protective effect against oxidative stress.

Abstract This paper presents a compact and planar reconfigurable filtenna for application in Wireless systems. The filtenna is composed of a UWB circular antenna and a filter with two trapezoidal resonators. The filter is integrated on the antenna feed line and has a band-pass frequency response. The filtenna frequency response reconfiguration is achieved by changing the capacitance of a varactor diode, placed between filter resonators; the capacitance varies continuously from 1.32 pF to 4.09 pF according to an applied bias voltage. The varactor capacitance analog variation defines the filtenna frequency of operation, which can be varied from 2.2 GHz to 3.4 GHz with an average bandwidth of 200 MHz, while maintaining the radiation characteristics of the UWB antenna. Simulated and measured filtenna results are shown according to varactor diode bias, demonstrating multiband operation using a compact planar design.

An analytical method for multi-elementary determination in powder refreshment, based on sample digestion using dilute mineral acids and detection by inductively plasma coupled optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) is proposed. Chemometric tools, such as fractional factorial design and principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were applied to optimize the sample preparation conditions in closed block digester, and Doehlert design for spectrometer operation. Addition and recovery tests and analyses of certified reference material were performed to evaluate the precision and accuracy, and the results confirm the reliability of the proposed method. Limits of quantification (LOQ) between 0.02 and 36 µg g−1 were obtained. The analytical method was applied for determination of 24 inorganic constituents in 20 powder refreshment samples. Calcium, K, Mg, Na, P, S and Ti presented the highest concentrations. The analytical method was adequate for the determinations of inorganic constituents in powder refreshment samples by ICP OES.

Resumo Fundamento A doença de Chagas (DC) constitui uma causa potencial negligenciada de doença microvascular coronariana (DMC). Objetivos Comparar pacientes com DMC relacionada à DC (DMC-DC) com pacientes com DMC ligada a outras etiologias (DMC-OE). Métodos De 1292 pacientes estáveis, encaminhados para angiografia coronária invasiva para elucidar o padrão hemodinâmico e a causa de angina, 247 apresentaram coronárias subepicárdicas normais, e 101 foram incluídos após aplicação dos critérios de exclusão. Desses, 15 compuseram o grupo de DMC-DC e suas características clínicas, hemodinâmicas, angiográficas, e cintilográficas foram comparadas às do grupo de 86 pacientes com DMC-OE. O nível de significância estatística para todas as comparações adotado foi de 0,05. Resultados Pacientes com suspeita de DMC-DC apresentaram características antropométricas, clínicas e angiográficas, além de alterações hemodinâmicas e de perfusão miocárdica estatisticamente comparáveis às detectadas nos 86 pacientes com DMC-OE. Disfunção ventricular diastólica, expressa por elevada pressão telediastólica do ventrículo esquerdo, foi igualmente encontrada nos dois grupos. Entretanto, em comparação a esse grupo com DMC-OE, o grupo com DMC-DC exibiu fração de ejeção ventricular esquerda mais baixa (61,1 ± 11,9 vs 54,8 ± 15,9; p= 0,049) e mais elevado escore de mobilidade da parede ventricular (1,77 ± 0,35 vs 1,18 ± 0,26; p= 0,02). Conclusão A cardiomiopatia crônica da doença de Chagas esteve associada à etiologia de possível doença microvascular coronariana em 15% de amostra de 101 pacientes estáveis, cujo sintoma principal era angina requerendo elucidação por angiografia invasiva. Embora os grupos DMC-DC e DMC-OE apresentassem características clínicas, hemodinâmicas, e de perfusão miocárdica em comum, a disfunção global e segmentar do ventrículo esquerdo foi mais grave nos pacientes com DMC associada à DC em comparação à DMC por outras etiologias. Abstract Background Chagas disease (CD) as neglected secondary form of suspected coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD). Objectives Comparison of patients with CMD related to CD (CMD-CE) versus patients with CMD caused by other etiologies (CMD-OE). Methods Of 1292 stable patients referred for invasive coronary angiography to elucidate the hemodynamic pattern and the cause of angina as a cardinal symptom in their medical history, 247 presented normal epicardial coronary arteries and 101 were included after strict exclusion criteria. Of those, 15 had suspected CMD-CE, and their clinical, hemodynamic, angiographic and scintigraphic characteristics were compared to those of the other 86 patients with suspected CDM-OE. Level of significance for all comparisons was p < 0.05. Results Patients with suspected CMD-CE showed most anthropometric, clinical, angiographic hemodynamic and myocardial perfusion abnormalities that were statistically similar to those detected in the remaining 86 patients with suspected CMD-OE. LV diastolic dysfunction, expressed by elevated LV end-diastolic pressure was equally found in both groups. However, as compared to the group of CMD-OE the group with CMD-CE exhibited lower left ventricular ejection fraction (54.8 ± 15.9 vs 61.1 ± 11.9, p= 0.049) and a more severely impaired index of regional wall motion abnormalities (1.77 ± 0.35 vs 1.18 ± 0.26, p= 0.02) respectively for the CMD-OE and CMD-CE groups. Conclusion Chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy was a secondary cause of suspected coronary microvascular disease in 15% of 101 stable patients whose cardinal symptom was anginal pain warranting coronary angiography. Although sharing several clinical, hemodynamic, and myocardial perfusion characteristics with patients whose suspected CMD was due to other etiologies, impairment of LV segmental and global systolic function was significantly more severe in the patients with suspected CMD related to Chagas cardiomyopathy. Resumo Nanofibras de CaFe2O4 foram sintetizadas com sucesso via solution blow spinning (SBS) e as influências do tratamento térmico nas propriedades morfológicas, microestruturais, magnéticas e óticas das nanofibras foram avaliadas. No processo de síntese, quantidades estequiométricas de nitratos de ferro e cálcio foram dissolvidos em solução aquosa contendo polivinilpirrolidona (PVP) e, em seguida, nanofibras híbridas (PVP/precursores) foram produzidas por SBS. As nanofibras híbridas foram calcinadas e depois submetidas às caracterizações microestrutural, morfológica e magnética. Os resultados evidenciaram que as nanofibras apresentaram natureza cristalina de fase única CaFe2O4, com tamanho de cristalito de 31,7 e 34,4 nm para as amostras calcinadas a 800 e 1000 °C, respectivamente. As fibras de CaFe2O4 calcinadas a 600 e 800 °C apresentaram morfologia homogênea, sem beads e com diâmetros médios de 521 e 427 nm, respectivamente. Os resultados também revelaram nanofibras com baixos gaps de energia de aproximadamente 1,98 eV e características de materiais magnéticos macios.

Abstract CaFe2O4 nanofibers were successfully synthesized via solution blow spinning (SBS), and the influences of heat-treatment on morphological, microstructural, magnetic, and optical properties of the nanofibers were evaluated. In the synthesis process, stoichiometric amounts of iron and calcium nitrates were dissolved in an aqueous solution containing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and, after that, hybrid nanofibers (PVP/precursors) were produced by SBS. The hybrid nanofibers were calcined and then subjected to microstructural, morphological, and magnetic characterizations. The results evidenced that the fibers presented the crystalline nature of the single-phase CaFe2O4, with a crystallite size of 32.7 and 34.4 nm for the samples calcined at 800 and 1000 °C, respectively. The CaFe2O4 fibers calcined at 600 and 800 °C presented a homogeneous morphology, without beads, and mean diameters of 521 and 427 nm, respectively. The results also revealed nanofibers with low band gaps of approximately 1.98 eV and characteristics of soft magnetic materials.

Resumo Em janeiro de 2018, um macho jovem de Didelphis aurita (Wied-Neuwied, 1826), o gambá-de-orelha-preta, foi recebido para atendimento veterinário na Clínica de Recuperação de Animais Silvestres (CRAS) da Universidade Estácio de Sá, no Rio de Janeiro, por ser portador de membro posterior direito parcialmente duplicado. Após exame radiográfico, constatou-se a ocorrência de polimelia associada a sindactilia. As imagens radiográficas revelaram as seguintes alterações no membro posterior direito: um fêmur com diâmetro aumentado, duas tíbias, duas fíbulas e ausência de hálux. As malformações observadas restringiram-se apenas ao membro posterior direito, o qual mantém sua funcionalidade. Essas alterações nunca antes foram descritas na espécie Didelphis aurita.

Abstract In January 2018, a young male of Didelphis aurita (Wied-Neuwied, 1826), the Brazilian common opossum, was admitted for veterinary evaluation at the Recovery Clinic of Wild Animals of Estácio de Sá University, CRAS, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, due to the presence of a partially duplicated right hind limb. After x-ray evaluation, polymelia associated with syndactyly was diagnosed. The images revealed the following alterations on the right limb: single femur with increased diameter, two tibiae, two fibulae and absence of hallux. The observed malformations were restricted to the hind right limb, which remains functional. This is the first report of such anomalies in an individual of Didelphis aurita.
